As the go-to digital storefront for many PC gamer??s, Steam has dominated the market for the better part of 20 years. Aside from the fact that it has millions of games in its growing selection, regular sales and events continue to be a mild threat to a lot of people's finances.

With that in mind, the latest Steam event will commence today and, much like the Pirates vs. Ninjas sale that took place in January, this one also pits one foe against another. In thi?s case, the Dinos vs. Robots Fest will have the large, scaly creatures of yesteryear fighting it out against the ?automatons of the futuristic age.

That is to say, there'll be some ??games in the event that cater to lovers of either dinosaurs or robots. Obvious, really, when you think about?? it.

And robot dinosaurs, can't forget about them

The above trailer may whet your appetite.?? As always, we?? can never be 100% sure what's going to be in each sale, but the teaser gives clips from some notable games.

For example, we get glimpses of Jurassic World Evolution and LEGO Jurassic World for all you dino lovers. Then there's footage from Detroit: Become Human and Terminator: Resistance if bots and mechanoids are more your thing.

And to bridge the gap, it looks like Horizon Zero Dawn is going in the f??est as well. Because in this crazy world, why can't we have a little bit of both? The Steam sale will go on for the week, ending March 4.

RPGs are having an amazing year in terms of sales, with Persona 3 Reload and Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth raking in the dough. Now, another reaches one million copies sold: Cygames�Granblue Fantasy: Relink.

The game’s team celebrated the one million copies on X (formerly Twitter) with a sweet-looking drawing and thanked those who played. They also promise to provide more updates for the Granblue Fantasy: Relink, which includes new ??playable characters throughout March and April.

On a Hot Streak

Granblue Fantasy: Relink was released in the midst of some heavy-hitting games like Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and Persona 3 Reload. Still, it held its grou?nd and surprised quite a lot of people with its engaging gameplay and intriguing story. A demo for the game dropped in early January, which gave the game some attention. 

It also helps that Granblue Fantasy: Relink includes multiplayer, making it a bit more sociable than your average RPG. Surprisingly, or maybe not due to its multiplayer leanings, the Steam Database shows the game outdoing Persona 3 Reload and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth in player count on that platform. For a series that’s only a decade old and started as a Japan-exclusive m??obile game, it’s doing incredi?ble.

I’ll be honest: I haven’t had the chance to hop onto the Granblue Fantasy: Relink train. I do plan to play the demo, since RPGs are some of my favorite games. I mean, its combat looks like Tales of Arise, and I know Tales of Arise. It’s right up my alley. We did have the amazing Steven Mills on the case, who gave the game an 8 out of 10. Seems like it's a good time to get on the Granblue train.

It's not just Steam that has sale events, albeit those are the ones most PC gamers think of. Other outlets such as GOG also put some deals on as well, and the CD Projekt-owned distribution site ??has recently started its winter ??sale.

If you head over to Good Old Games, you'll see a host of titles that are currently? on ?offer. The event is going until January 4, so you've got some time to get a few downloads in around the Christmas period.

As for what's on offer, there's a veritable bevy of classic/retro and more modern releases. For example, the original Mortal Kombat games are currently 75% off, as is the complete Yakuza series. The remake of System Shock is 35% off and, naturally, Cyberpunk 2077 and the DLC are discounted at 50% and 15% r?es?pectively.

Yes, of course Skyrim is in the sale, too

All-in-all, there are around 6,000 ??games that are part of the winter sales event. Oh, I could list off many mo??re examples, but I'd be here for quite some time.

Suffice it to see, there's quite a few that I'll be tempted to pick up between now and January. I was pleasantly surprised to see the Myst 30th anniversary collection at nearly 60% off. Not because I'm a fan of Myst (have never pl??ayed it), but because I don't think I even knew it was that o?ld. Time is fleeting, etc.

Anyway, as we approach the end of 2023, all the gaming platforms and websites will be putting on their own sales. Look out for the Steam winter event next week. Admit ??it. T?hat's probably what most of you are waiting for.

There's barely time to breathe between Steam events and sales lately. However, if you have a virtual reality head??set and are hankering for some pre-Christmas ga??ming, you might want to check out the Steam VR Fest next week.

The latest vi??deo on the Steam YouTube channel breaks down what you can ??expect between December 4 and December 11. There's not a whole lot that needs to be explained, to be honest. It's a Steam event. It caters to VR games. You know the score.

As for what's involved, the teaser shows off clips from games like Among Us VR, Star Trek: Bridge Crew, Elite Dangerous, Golf It!, and Tetris Effect: Connected. How you play a virtual reality version of Tetris, I'm not sure. But these are the t?imes we live in.

Steam work makes the dream work

While these Steam events have been pretty short, lasting about a week or a few days, many of us are still recovering from the last one. The Autumn Sale took place at the end of November, an??d we still have the big Winter event to come.

Can't complain, of course. I've got a laundry list of ??games on m??y wishlist that I wouldn't mind buying at a lower price. If waiting until a Steam sale is the way to do it, then so be it.

Plus, with virtual reality still finding its footing in the market, the VR Fest is a great way those who have a headset to test out their hardware. I would get a virtual reality kit myself, but I can't justify the cost. Although, with Taskmaster getting its own VR game, maybe it's time to make the leap.

The Epic Game Store's Black Friday sale 2023 has kicked off, bringing plenty of discounts for games. Most notably, Epic is offering a 33% off coupon during the sale, which can be applied toward Alan Wake 2.

The Epic Coupon can be used throughout the event. It lets buyers take 33% off any checkout purchase that rings up to $14.99 or more. Even though Alan Wake 2 is already set at a reasonable $49.99, using the coupon during the sale will drop it to an even more reasonable $33.49 USD. I may be biased, but that's a damn good deal for a very recently launched GOTY contender. It's a fantastic game that can last you up to around 30 hours.

The Epic Coupon seems to be pretty much the sale of the Epic Games Store Black Friday sale. You can find a host of games at a discount, but the coupon itself seems to be what's taking off the big, meaty chunks. The rules of the coupon state that it can be used at checkout, and you'll get another every time you "complete an eligible transaction." And by that, Epic means any purchase, solo or combined, that adds up to $14.99 or more. Likely, that means you can apply it to Assassin's Creed Mirage Deluxe Edition, even though it's already listed at 20% off.

Having both ?games already on such a steep sale isn't such bad news. The year has been full of bangers, so some may at least appreciate the softer hit on their wallets.

It feels like Steam has some sort of sales event almost on a weekly basis. Recently, we had the Scream Fest to celebrate Halloween, and now we're getting anothe?r one as we head towards the ?tail end of November.

As always with these things, we can never be 100% sure of what games will be discounted. H??owever, if you take a look at the video below, there are a few major titles that do crop up, suggesting they will part of Steam's next sale.

We're treated to clips from the likes of Hitman 3, Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, Sons of the Forest, The Last of Us: Part 1, and even Starfield. The Autumn event beg?ins November 21 and goes through until November 28, and with such a line-up, it looks like it'll be an interesting one to keep an eye on.

It's been quite the year

As we edge ever closer to the closing weeks of 2023, many of us will start reflecting on the last twelve months that have been and gone. While this year has been great for video game releases, a lot of joy has been sullied by the ongoing (and rather brutal) layoffs that have occurred across the industry in general.

As such, it's been qui??te the rollercoaster, but things seem to be trundling along unabated, and the Steam Autumn sale event is just one example.

Of course, Christmas is coming up soon, so we'll be seeing the Winter sale go live over the holi??day period. Nothing like a ruck of discounted ??games at a time when everyone's spending too much money anyway.

The console wars continue to rage on, as always. Nothing gets the gaming market fired up quite like being? at loggerheads with competitors.?? There's never usually a clear winner, but for the UK, the PS5 seems to be outshining the rest.

According to Gamesindustry.biz, a report from GfK �a data and market intelligence analyst �reveals Sony's current-gen system has been doing remarkably well in th??e UK. Between November 2022 and October 2023, the PS5 had a 43% market share. However, over the past six months, this has inc?reased to 51%, giving a majority slice.

GfK boss Dorian Bloch says this rise could be down to "unrestricted sales on the standard PS5 hardware model, aggressive price promotions in July and August, and the recent EA Sports FC 24 bundle."

The upcoming Slim model as well, perhaps?

Compare that to platform rivals like Xbox, in which figures indicate a three percent drop in the same time frame. This means the Microsoft console went from a 26% market share to just 23%. Similarly, the Switch experienced ??a much bigger drop, which is down to 34% from 25%.

Whether these trends will change is up for debate. The holi??day period ??is almost upon us, with Black Friday deals inbound. Both the digital and disc drive versions of the PS5 Slim are available now at some US retailers, but folks in the UK are still waiting for the new model to drop.

Bloch goes on to say that the fourth quarter of the year (basically Christmas) accounts for up to?? 55% of hardware unit sales. In which case, "there is still a lot to play for at the time of ??writing."

With the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer announcement being made recently, all eyes are once again on Rockstar's behemoth franchise. Not that eyes were ever truly off it. GTA 5 is st?ill doing phenomenally well, as outlined in Take-Two Interactive's recent figures.

According to conference call notes uploaded a couple of days ago, Grand Theft Auto 5 has now sold approximately 190 million units since it launched in 2013. Compare this to November 2022's prepared remarks �when it had sold 170 million �and it's obvious the game is still selling in dr??oves.

At this rate, it could well fly past the 200 million mark, maintaining its stance as the second highest-selling game after Minecraft (which recently hit 300 million).

Better be worth the wait

GTA 6 is still pretty elusive. Aside from the leak in 2022, we really don't know much about the hugely anticipated follow-up. Rockstar has promised the first official trailer in December, so at least we have that to look forward t??o.

It's a tall order to be the next big thing after Grand Theft Auto 5, but af?ter years of speculations, leaks, and the collective will of gamers everywhere, the world is finally ready for the next installme?nt.

It's tempting to say that once the sixth game comes out, sales of GTA 5 may slow down significantly. However, Rockstar's not above rehashing some of its older (and more lucrative) titles, so who knows what the studio has planned for the game. There's still some milking to be done for that proverbial cas??h cow.

For example: Resident Evil 4 Remake is currently 30% off (and comes as a special double pack featuring the Separate Ways DLC). Want more Resident Evil? How about Village for 60% off? Even the weaker entries (you know the ones) a??re discounted.

If you even keep just a tiny watch on the video game world, you won't be shocked to learn that Starfield has been quite the big deal. As ??of September, Bethesda's epic sci-fi RPG was the top ranking game in the US in terms of sales.

That's according to a chart uploaded by Circana analyst Mat Piscatella on Twitter. The image gives a rundown of the twenty best-selling games in the US market between the end of August and September 30. Starfield sits comfortably at the top, while new entries such as Mortal Kombat 1 and EA Sports FC 24 are at the number two and number t??hree positio??ns, respectfully.

The figures include both physical and digital copies of the games across all major platforms. As an aside, it's interesting to see Resident Evil 4 jump up from 27th to 12th place, but that's almost certainly because of the recent Separate Ways DLC.

And for those trying to spot Baldur's Gate 3 on the list, Piscatella clarified that digital sales of the RPG aren't reflected in the list, as "Larian Studios is not a panel member."

It won't last forever, though

Of course, no one's surprised to see Starfield at the top. The game was hyped up for quite some time and with no sign of The Elder Scrolls 6, this was all Bethesda fan?s had to look forward to.

However, things have definitely gone a bit quiet for the game. In fact, if you take a look at the Top Sellers list on Steam, you can see that �at the time of writing �Starfield is now at number 35, having taken quite a drop recently. It's even below the Special Edition of Skyrim, which goes to show how much staying power TES5 has.

Not that Bethesda ever left the limelight, but the Starfield and Elder Scrolls studio is the talk of the town at the moment. Th?at could be why there's a sale going on that allows you to purchase some games developed or published by the Maryland-based company.

Over the online store Fanatical (thanks, PCGamesN), you can get discounts on a selection of Bethesda-owned titles. The sale gives you the opportunity to build a custom ?bundle out of a possible 14 games, choosing up to five releases for as l??ittle as $3.

While it's not a huge selection, there's a fair range to opt for. You could get classic Fallout combined with Rage or go for some of the modern Doom or Wolfenstein releases. It also looks like many of them come ??with their respective DL??Cs and expansions as well, so it has that extra appeal.

Only two games actually by Bethesda

Of course, given that Bethesda is a powerful publisher as well, you'll notice that the majority of these games haven't been developed by the studio itself. Still, it shows just how much sway the studio has in the AAA market, and you can still choose Morrowind and Oblivion for your bundle.

It also looks like the sale event at Fanatical is going to be going on for a while. At the time of writing, the countdown clock at the top of the page says there are just over 16 days and 18 hours until the deals end. That'll take us right into the middle of October. At that point, I imagine the Ha??lloween sale events will start kicking in.

The digital gaming world has been on the grow for years and wh??ile Steam is arguably the head honcho, GOG.com i??s a worthy alternative. Beginning life in 2008, the PC storefront is currently celebrating its 15th year with a mega sale event that sees hundreds of games being discounted.

If you head over to the GOG website, you can peruse all the games that have had their prices slashed for the celebrations. There's pretty much something for everyone here, whether you want 40% off Cyberpunk 2077, 75% off the GOTY edition of Fallout 3, or some other perc?ent si??gns attached to some other game.

Intended to preserve PC gaming

Started by CD Projekt around the time it found fame with the Witcher series, Good Old Games was born as a means of digitally ??distributing PC games. This idea goes back even further �to 1994 �in which the company wanted a way of combating vid?eo game piracy in Poland by, as the website itself says, "offering classic games at budget-friendly prices."

As the digital age grew in the 2000s, the likes of GOG.com have become a haven for "forgotten gems." While the company responsible for it would become better known as the develo??per of AAA g??ames (under the CD Projekt Red brand), its PC gaming storefront is a strong force in the quest to keep classic games in circulation.

Having recently turned 20, Steam continues to be the cornerstone of PC gaming. As well as being one �if not the �first video game digital storefront, the platform is notorious ??for its sales and events. Next year's plans are no different.

While there's a sale still going for the Steam Deck, Valve announced its schedule for 2024's first quarter. A recent Valve blog shows a schedule ??of upcoming events from January to the beginning of April next year.

There are some pretty interesting-sounding ones coming up as well. For example, at the start of 2024, there's the Steam Capitalism and Economy Fest, which "focuses on games that are about cold hard cash." This is followed by the Pirates vs. Ninjas Fest, which sounds pretty self-explanatory.

You weren't using that money for anything important, right?

As well as ??the above-mentioned fests, there'll be the usual swathe of events in the new year. We'll still get the usual seasonal sales (summer is typically the big one), as well as Next Fest, in which "fans can try out demos, chat with developers, watch livestreams, and learn about upcoming games."

Over the years, Steam sales became a meme-worthy phenomenon, an event notorious for bleeding personal funds. You never really know what you're going to get during eac??h event, but there's always something for everyone.

Many of us have been long-time users of Steam, and even during times of financial hardship, gamers may still find ?themselves drawn in by discounted items.

The console wars continue, and it looks like Xbox is enjoyin??g a boost in the UK. It turns out sales of the Series S and Series X have increased by 76%, based on week-on-week figures up to September 2.

That's according to a report from Gamesindustry.biz. The data itself comes from GfK �a German market re?search company �which says that the Series X in particular enjoyed a 46% jump in sales across the United Kingdom.

One of the reasons for this has been attested to the recent 1TB model of the Xbox console. The Series S 1TB edition ??released at the start of September and, according to GfK spokesperson Dorian Bloch, accounted for 24% of all the Xbox systems sold at the start? of the month.

There's another factor as well...

Of course, it isn't just a new model that's responsible for this increase in sales. It's been suggested that Starfield �which launched fully on S??eptember 6 �is partially responsible for this boost.

Given that the game was available to people who pre-ordered the Premium Edition from September 1, it's entirely plausible that many people in the ?UK went out and boug??ht an Xbox in preparation.

As we all know, Starfield is an Xbox exclusive and was made available through Game Pass from day one. It's easily one of the most anti?cipated releases of this gaming generation, much to the chagrin of PlayStation and Nintendo owners.

Reviews for Starfield h??ave been largely positive, though many have noticed the usual assortment of bugs. It's a Bethesda game, after all. But a 76% jump in sales across the UK suggests? that Microsoft making it an Xbox exclusive was worth it financially.

It's been making tracks

Konami has announced that their 2020 game, Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban, has passed 4 million units sold. What’s important about that???? Well, a few things.

Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban has never been released outside of Japan. That’s not entirely surprising, as Momotaro Dentetsu is a long-running series that started back on the Famicom back in 1988. Back then, it was produced by Hudson Soft, but after Hudson went bust, all its assets were bought out by Konami in 2012. However, in all that time, Momotaro Dentetsu has never been localized. Not one game. It has always stayed in Japan.

Furthermore, 4 million sales in Japan is a crazy number. To put this into perspective, Famitsu reported last month that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has a lifetime sales number of 2,208,705. It’s not quite the numbers of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (5,211,237) or Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (5,328,989) and not even close to touching Animal Crossing New Horizons (7,477,507). Still, f?or ?a non-first-party Switch exclusive, it’s a rather insane number.

So, does this mean we’ll see it over here? Failing that, will the West get the upcoming Momotaro Dentetsu World: Chikyuu wa Kibou de Mawatteru!? It’s not impossible, but I wouldn’t exactly count on it. The Momotaro Dentetsu games are steeped in Japanese culture. They’re in the style of board games, and are largely about traveling Japan’s legendary rail system to buy up as much of it as possible. It’s sort of like Monopoly but for public transportation.

The point is, I found this very fascinating, and i??f you’re reading this paragraph, chances are you’ve fallen victim to my eclectic enthusiasm. You’r??e welcome or I’m sorry. Take your pick.

Ryza's on the ryze

Publisher Koei Tecmo and developer Gust have just announced another milestone for the Atelier Ryza series. Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Se?cret Hideout, Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy, and Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key hav?e surpassed a total of two million units ship??ped.

The last report came on March 17, announcing that the series had shipped 1.6 million units. This means that the Atelier Ryza series has moved over 400,000 more units in a period filled with massive attention-stealers such as Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, Street Fighter VI, and Diablo IV. Now that's quite the feat.

To celebrate the series' success, Koei Tecmo has announced that they're willing to give out some goodies to fans; too bad that only applies to fans living in Japan.

Are you just hearing about the Atelier series for the first time? Then you'll probably be surprised to learn that this series has existed since '97. (That's older than Metal Gear Solid.) Atelier is a popular RPG series that began on Sony consoles, then gradually made its way to most other platforms. The Ryza games?? in the series follow Reisalin "Ryza" Stout. Ryza is an adventurer who travels the world looking for recipes to further her stud??ies in the field of alchemy.

You can play either of the three newest games in the series on PS5, Xbox X|S, Switch, and Steam. The success of Atelier Ryza will likely not slow down anytime soon either, as an anime TV adaptation will come out this summer.

A lot of rupees

It may have just come out on Friday, May 12, 2023, but The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is already selling faster than any other title in t??he series.

How many? Holy crap, 10 million so far. I come from an era when 1 million was this massive, unattainable milestone that few ever reached. Now games are crossing that mark in a few days. And as the press release points out (via BusinessWire), “with over 4 million sold in the Americas, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is also the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch game and the fastest-selling Nintendo game for any system in that territory.�/p>

Fun fact, the original Legend of Zelda sold an estimated 6.5 million on NES. Meanwhile, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has sold around 30 million copies. So, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom still has some catching up to do, but it’s off to an incredible start.

Tears of the Kingdom is the perfect storm for sales. Its direct predecessor (ignoring the Link’s Awakening remake) was already well-received and sold like hotcakes. Any game in The Legend of Zelda series is already going to be hotly anticipated, and Tears of the Kingdom was well-received by critics. It was announced back in 2019, and since then has been like a cow being slowly lowered into a tank of piranhas. Thereâ€?™s no surprise that the piranhas are now gorging themselves.

Personally, I’m enjoying it. I’m among the many who loved Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom feels like an extension of that. A lot of puzzle-solving is based around building things, which is a feature that works just fine for me. I don’t spend a lot of time getting overly creative because I prefer to foc??us on the exploration, but I still enjoy it just fine. I guess I’m just joining the chorus here.

Not attaching to enough faces

Bloomberg has revealed that Sony’s new PlayStation VR2 Headset is projected to sell fewer than 300,000 units by the end of March. How much less? Well, PSVR2 is on track to hit 270,000. This is according to estimates from the International Data Corporation, ??a research firm that tracks these?? sorts of things.

Considering that Sony was looking to make 2 million units in its first three months (though it reportedly slashed this to 1 million and then refuted those reports), this is a pretty disappointing start. IDC analyst Francisco Geronimo has said that a price ??cut will be needed to avert disaster since ma??ny countries are facing a cost-of-living crisis, and many large corporations have announced massive layoffs in recent months.

My job involves covering video games, and I can’t justify the cost of VR. If I could, I’d want one to use on my PC, and the PSVR2 is locked entirely to the PS5. If I dug up buried treasure and was able to afford more than one VR headset, I’d still be hesitant to buy a PSVR2 since I don’t have t?he space to have a bun??ch of VR headsets lying around. So, in summary, if Sony wants me to have a PSVR2, it should not only just give me one but also buy me a house so I have the space for it.

For people who already have money and a house, PSVR2 has been marred by a shortage of available games and a complete lack of backward compatibility for PSVR1 games. Due to cost issues, VR is already a niche market, and Sony seems to be content with making it niche-er. I’m not a CEO, but when you take an already small market and try to take a slice of a smaller slice, then I don’t see how 2 million can happen. It doesn’t matter how fancy your tech is.

I guess what I’m trying to say is: Virtual realit?y?? In this economy?

Steam Sales and Fests are an opportune moment for PC owners to fill up t??heir gaming backlog. And Valve is taking a little bit of the guesswork and speculation out of the Steam Sale schedule for 2023.

In a blog, Valve outlines the schedule for 2023 in terms of Steam Sales and Fests. 7.1 million units shipped in the fall of 2022

Sony has released its financial results for the fiscal period ending December 31, 2022, revealing that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) hardware has surpassed 32.1 million units shipped units since its fall 2020 launch.

As per the report, Sony shipped an additional 7.1m consoles in the three-month period ending December 31, 2022, a massive increase of 3.1m units of the same time frame in 2021. This is expected to be due to the increased manufacture and availability of PS5 consoles in the latter half of the year, following the extended period of production downtime in the console's debut year, with both a lack of comp?onents and the ongoing COVID??-19 pandemic putting the brakes on the whole industry.

As a result of the increased shipment figures, Sony has raised its annual quarterly forecast for the remainder of the fiscal yea??r. That is to say, the publisher now expects to ship a further 6.2m units worldwide in the current quarter, resulting in a grand total of 19m PS5 console shipments for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023.

In addition to the hardware shipment figures, Sony announced that it sold 86.5m software units (combined P?S4 & PS5) during the three-month period ending December 31, 2022. T??his number is down around 6.2m units on the same period in the previous fiscal year (92.7m). Also continuing to decline are PlayStation Plus subscriptions, with a total of 46.4m subscribers recorded December 31, 2022, a decrease of 1.6m from the same period in the previous fiscal year (48m).

Overall, however, PlayStation engagement is slightly up, with 112 million monthly active users on PlayStation Networ??k, a one million user increase on the same period ending December 2021.

Not bad for a global playtest

Sega has announced that the most recent entry in its iconic Sonic the Hedgehog series, Sonic Frontiers, has smashed past 2.5 million global sales since its launch on Pl??ayStation, PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch platforms earlier last month.

The new titles, which is considered to be the start of a fresh direction for the tumultuous platforming franchise, sees The Blue Blur whisked away to a strange and somewhat dystopian new world: The Starfall Islands. There, our hero embarks upon a quest to gather up the Chaos Emeralds and restore order, while locating the whereabouts of his equally at-sea friends. As the first truly "open-world" Sonic title, Sonic Frontiers aims to breath new life into the dice-roll series, offering up mechanics and features that are new to the Sonic the Hedgehog universe.

Launching on November 8, critics and fans have remained divisive in regard to the title, with some taking to the new direction, while others have felt that, while a gameplay overhaul was necessary, Sonic Frontiers' path isn't quite "it". The title also launched with various technical issues, with Sonic Team director likening the launch to a "global playtest". A statement that understandably raised eyebrows among some of those who had just dropped $60 on the new title. On the whole, Sonic Frontiers has been seen as a positive for the franchise, offering hope that perhaps that gen-yoo-ine top?-tier Sonic title could see the light of d??ay... someday.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus leads the charge

Nintendo has released its latest financial earnings report, revealing that its Nintendo Switch hardware, now approach?ing its sixth year of release, continues to perform magnificently for ?the iconic publisher.

Nintendo has sold a grand total of 114.33 million Switch units worldwide since the console's release in the spring of 2017, with 3.25 million units shifting in the most recent financial quarter. Of course, what is a console without software? And Nintendo is also sitting pretty in that department, with 64 million game sales taking place over the past three months, taking the grand total of? Switch game sales to an incredible 917.59 million.

While you'd be forgiven for assuming 916 million of those sales were Mario Kart Deluxe, it seems that the success story of 2022 has been the colorful shooter Splatoon 3, which has sold 7.9 million copies since its launch in September, already smashing series records as the fastest-selling entry to date. Monolith Soft's adventure Xenoblade Chronicles 3 has also seen relatively modest success, with 1.72 million sales worldwide since its July 22 release date. The biggest seller, however, has been Pokemon Legends: Arceus, pulling in a whopping 13.91 milli??on sales since its Ja??nuary release.

Later this month, Nintendo will release another Pokemon title in the form of double-header Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. These anticipated titles will no doubt round out what has been a pretty sharp year for both the Nintendo Switch platform and the publisher as a whole, still riding high? despite the ongoing ?march of the ninth generation.

Over three million consoles moved in last quarter

Sony Interactive Entertainment has released its financial results for fiscal year ending September 30, 2022, which shows that ?its most recent hardware platform, PlayStation 5 (PS5), has smashed past 25 million global shipments since its initial launch in November 2020.

According to the data, the shiny white behemoth shipped 3.3 million units in the most recent quarter, more or less matching the same period in 2021 and thus presenting steady sales for the (admittedly expensive) hardware. While there have been some struggles getting the ninth generation off to a strong start �impacted by production woes, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the cost of living crisis �it appears that sales of the PS5 system remain rela??tively com??fortable for the time being.

In addition to the hardware figures, SIE also revealed that there are currently 45.4 million PlayStation Plus subscribers, though this figure is down some 1.8 million users from the same time frame one year ago. Much like Microsoft's the Xbox Game Pass service, it seems that PlayStation is continually struggling to grow its subsc?riber base, which had seen nothing but growth until the 2021 econom?y slump. Still, 45 million players is nothing to be sniffed at, and so it is unlikely that the publisher will be too concerned.

Further decline was seen in total game sales, with PS4 and PS5 combined software sales down a huge 13.9 million units over 2021, for a grand total of 62.5 million games sold. 63% of all full game sales w??ere digital purchases �demonstrating that while the digital market continues its inevitable growth, physical media is not quite ready to be consigned to the garbage pile just yet.

Paint Party kicking in right now

Nintendo's colorful arena shooter series made its grand return last month, with the arrival of madcap multiplayer release Splatoon 3 �And, according to new figures in Famitsu, it appears to have had nothing less than the proverbial blockbuster launch, raking in physical and digital sales wor??ldwide and taking the retail market by storm in Japan in particular.

In fact, for September 2021, Splatoon 3 sold 2.7 million physical copies in the territory, which accounts for an incredible 69% of all of Japan's gaming retail for the month in question. Previously, Nintendo had already celebrated Splatoon 3 shifting 3.45 million copies in a mere three days, making it Japan's fastest-selling Nintendo Switch release ever. Splatoon 3 has been the most dominant seller in series' history, whic????h is unfathomable when you consider hosts Pearl & Marina have taken time out for this entry.

On the hardware front, Japan also shifted a further 500,000 Nintendo Switch units in September, suggesting that Splatoon 3 has also been a major platform mover in the territory. And, while Nintendo is not particularly forward in the revelation of its games' sales figures, we also know that Splatoon 3 has also been a success overseas, scoring the series its first Number One in the UK sales charts.

Splatoon, as a franchise, has gone from strength to strength with each consecutive release. The series' success goes beyond the engaging gameplay and fun multiplayer action, with Splatoon successfully building a true community of players, as happy to hang around Inkopolis and share emotes and sketches as they are to run around covering the floor and walls in Day-Glo colors. Splatoon may have started out as a typical team shooter, ??built it has become something more, with fan ??art, live shows, a healthy competitive scene, and merchandising all helping to grow the franchise into something very special.

The PC port seems to have done the trick

This August saw a familiar face web-zip his way up the NPD rankings. Following a PC port of Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man, the game shot up to th?ird in the month'?s best-selling titles.

As NPD's Mat Piscatella notes, Marvel's Spider-Man made the leap from 84th in July to 3rd in August. Concurrently, Spider-Man was the best seller of the month across all? tracked? Steam titles.

Insomniac's web-crawler hit the PlayStation in 2018, but the remastered version made the jump to PC on August 12. And it seems like that jump was very successful, both critically and in sales.

While it doesn't have the Miles Morales content yet, the combination of high-end PC features and the potential portability (it is??? Steam Deck Verified) seems to have worked out well.

Madden NFL 23 came in at the top selling spot, which is not a huge surprise as Madden is a consistent top-seller for its launch month. The new Saints Row took the second place in NPD's top sellers.

Other notables include Horizon Forbidden West, back on the top 20 with a price promotion likely helping out, and Soul Hackers 2 debuting at the 15th spot. The PS5 leads the month's console sales, and is the top for the year in dolla??r sales. The?? Switch still leads in unit sales for the year, though.

The power of the port

This is another solid PC port debut for Sony, following off others like God of War (2018) earlier this year. The sudden re-interest in a game that already sold? quite well years ago shows how effective these por??ts can be.

Tie in the way that Steam Decks seem to b?e flying out of Valve's production facilities, and it's a match made in Spidey-heaven. While a few notables are still missing from the PC port bonanza, it does seem li??ke bringing these games over to more players ??is doing well.

Next up is the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, which packs together Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy, hitting PC on October 19.

Humble Bundle always has some great deals on games, but one of its newest bundles, Resident Evil Decades of Horror, has got to be just about the best value of any game sales right now. Are you in a party, co-op, or head-to-head mood?

Some of my fondest Nintendo Switch memories were formed with multiplayer (and especially co-op) games, and if you're looking for a group activity, the Nintendo Multiplayer Sale is worth a run-through. There are about 50 discounted games on the eShop, as well as some DLC, and the deals will stick around through August 7.

You can see the full list of featured games ov?er here??, and I've got recommendations. That said, this is a digital Nintendo sale? �the games are often great, but rarely cheap.

10 games to consider

• Borderlands: The Handsome Collection ($15.99) runs fine on Nintendo Switch.
• Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics ($27.99) is a good bang for your buck if you enjoy board and card games â€?and the AI puts up a fight in solo play.
• Diablo II: Resurrected ($23.99) is here if you want to rekindle things.
• Good Job! ($13.99) is a nice, casual pickup. It's stick-figure chaos.
• LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga ($44.99) has something for everyone, especially completionists, as it spans nine films.
• Snipperclips ($13.99) and the DLC ($6.99) are a must-play for co-op fans.
• Star Wars Episode I Racer ($7.49) is more than just memes.
• Streets of Rage 4 ($12.49) is a fresh take on the classic brawler vibe.
• Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon ($16.99) is under the radar, but it's expanding.
• Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania ($25.99) is a frustrating, chill, and funny arcade romp all at once. Just be warned that Monkey Target has wonky controls.

Please don't spend $35 on 1-2-Switch. It's your money... but don't.

And it's also worth noting that Mario Party Superstars is the good one on Switch �instead, this sale features Super Mario Party ($41.99), which originally came out in 2018 and left some of us feeling empty. For what it's worth, I did enjoy the hyper-realistic meat-siz?zling mini-game. I'd play a whole dang cooking game in that vein. C'mon, ??Nintendo!

Although I wouldn't recommend it at this arguably still-too-high price, if you're curious about Go Vacation ($34.99), it's an island activity game that's good for a few laughs. Repetition can and will ??sink in, though. ??Kids might have a better time with it.

Finally, I'll always prefer the "everyone's here" appeal of Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition ($41.99), but Age of Calamity ($41.99) and the Expansion Pass ($13.99) might show up at the right place and time for you (especially if you're skipping the recent Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes). I cou?ld chip away at th??ese Adventure maps for the rest of my life.

A lot of repeats, but there are some new deals

We're well into summer, and that means scorching days, soothing Seals & Crofts, and lots of gaming deals. The PlayStation Store Summer Sale started today with over a thousand deals on PS4 and PS5 games lasting through Wednesday, Aug?ust 3 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific.

The bulk of the sale is going to be older stuff, naturally �but a few newer releases stand out in the crowd. Supermassive Games' cinematic horror romp The Quarry, Sloclap's tense martial arts brawler Sifu, Saber Interactive's team-based Evil Dead: The Game, and Team Ninja's super eclectic Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin are worth a nod.
