A huge update is on the way to Sea of Stars with some oft-requested features in tow. Sabotage Studio has set the free Dawn of Equinox upd??ate for a November 12, 2024 launch, introducing local co-op and more on all platforms.

Sabotage detailed the hefty update in a press release, which calls this the studio's "fully realized vision" for the acclaimed RPG. The local co-op, for starters, lets up to three players tackle the adventure ??in its entirety, mastering timed hits in a co-op env?ironment along the way.

Combat has been refined significantly along with this addition. Combo Points are n?ow retained after battles, there have been balance updates, and Mystery Locks introduce new ways to b??reak enemy spells. If this makes things too easy or too hard for you or anywhere in between new difficult presets are available at the start of a new game.

Beyond quality-of-life improvements and a Quebecois localization, there are a few other major beats worth mentioning. Dawn of Equinox adds a revamped prologue that nixes the flashback structure and directly implements combat for the yo??unger heroe?s. There's also a brand new cinematic during a pivotal moment for some extra impact.

Need help finding some of those pesky collectibles and hidden challenges? There's an improved Parrot Relic for that. Finally, a new Speedrunner Mode Relic triggers features that make it easier to keep track of your personal quest to set a world record in Sea of Stars, or at least best your own time.

Beyond all that, the free Throes of the Watchmaker DLC is due out in spring 2025. When it launches, players will be also able to dig into the new storyline and more with Dawn of Equinox's local co-op.

The Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker DLC finds Valere and Zale venturing into a miniature clockwork world called Horloge. In this magical clockwork kingdom, denizens are under threat by a cursed carnival, and require the assistance of the Solstice Warriors to adapt to their new surroundings to manifest their Sun and Moon pow??ers.

According to Sabotage Studio, new features in the DLC will include all-new playable classes for both Valere and Zale, a new playable character named Arty, new areas, music, bosses, enemies, and puzzles. Also, Throes of the Watchmaker will add local co-op for up to three players.

Over the last year or so, I’ve inexplicably joined the ranks of people collecting big, bulky vinyl soundtracks. Albums are enjoying their second coming in a mostly digital era, and initially, I picked up a few with the sole intent of hanging them on a barren bedroom wall. Yet somehow, somewhere along the way, I wound up with a record player listening to the Silent Hill 4 soundtrack. It gives me a sort?? of haunted, pinky-out ambience.

Anyway, I’ve got no technical reason for it. My vinyl expertise doesn't extend beyond 'that sounds good' or 'that sounds bad' and I don’t own any albums that could fund my retirement or make them worth all the fuss. Really, I just like how holding the unwieldy discs feels, and I'm especially into the ones that look a bit like vintage splatter art. I like looking at the sleeves, blowing away the dust, and using a medium society had long aged out of by the time I was born??.

A lot of people making games seem to share that sentiment, too. I recently spoke with Sabotage Studio president and Sea of Stars creative director Thierry Boulanger, who seems inspired by what drives us to revisit those little rituals with older media. In the interview, Boulanger offered Destructoid a peek into the studio’s process. It's a look into making something both new and retro, maintaining integrity between mediums, and how you dec??ide where Yasunori Mitsuda slots into all of this.

It’s all about touch

Sea of Star party as they set sail
Screenshot by Destructoid

“From the get-go, it was a must,â€?said Boulanger, in reference to the decision to give Sea of Stars the retail and vinyl soundtrack treatment. The studio released its first game, The Messenger, in the same nostalgic vein back in 2018. They were already familiar with the path to getting something tangible made, and with Sea of Stars, Boulanger ??says it was always part of the pla??n.

“We want there to be intent in everything that we do. We don’t wanna just move plastic. It’s not so much about the units. It’s ?that we make something people want to touch, they want to own, they want to be able to keep. They want it to exist in their lives, more than the abstract, digital? part of everything.nbsp;

The holding, the touching, that’s all part of the retro experience for plenty of enthusiasts. It’s, mostly, a good-intention??ed longing for different times or something comforting and familiar. For me, it usually boils down to some combination of childhood favorites and just wanting something a little simpler to manage. However, working within the limitations of yesteryear doesn't merit praise by default, despite what my nostalgia insists, and by no means is the process truly easier.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YP8_dlYv78

Sea of Stars gets that, I explained as much in my review, but eschewing what’s needlessly obtuse doesn’t detract from recreating classic RPG designs with modern sensibi??lities.?? The limitations, however, still exist when you move between mediums  like making the jump from a limitless digital library to the more restrained, plastic discs.

Sabotage’s Iam8bit vinyl collaboration is a 2xLP collection, so it doesn’t contain the entire, hefty 200-song tracklist from Sea of Stars. Instead, it has to work as a sampling representative of the OST’s best pieces, capturing the work of composer Eric Brown and his legendary collaborator, Yasunori Mitsuda of Chrono Trigger and Xeno-series fame, in a curated format. It’s a gauntlet of bangers already made within a limited framework, and for the vinyl, they’d?? have to be culled again.

“In capturing retro, we ??do like to work with the limitations because we sort of aim for the type of experience or the type of things that emerge from really ??harsh boundaries, said Boulanger.

“So, any track has to be a two minute loop maximum. You need to have a hook in there in like three sections, you know? You can't do this drawn-out intro into a symphonic thing that just goes on. So it's, it's less of a score and more of a classic soundtrack there. But since we don't have the memory limitations of a cartridge, then we can do as many tracks as we want./p>

For Sea of Stars, that meant any important cutscene could have “bespoke audio, leading to its whopping 200 tracks. It’s not the usual setup for many of the games that inspired the RP??G, so that meant the vinyl would get picky.

“The first thing we did was [say] ‘okay, we’re?? doing 2xLP, right? So, we’re gonna save one side for Mitsuda, because this collaboration is straight-up legendary.Boulanger laughs describing the process, but that harsh curation left to the rest of the soundtrack was important to get Mitsuda’s 12 ?tracks on the physical album.

From there, Boulanger and Brown worked to sample a selection of its?? more iconic themes into something that could flow outside the larger, digital collection. They needed the basics, like the town and battle themes, but Brown was l?eft to much of the curation process to ensure the round-up was not only representative but balanced.

“Eric also put care into the idea of the listening experience, trying to pace everything properly. Of course, you want all the heavy bangers, but you also want to sometimes take a bit of a break. So we feel it flows really nicely, but it was really something [of a process] because when you're doing digital, you're kind of boundless, right? You can just do however much you want to do?.

And this kind of brings it back to now, ‘but what if you distill your idea?It forces you, it puts you in this mindset of like, ‘what's the nugget? What's the, the crystallized form of it that's concise? It was a super fun journey to do that, even though it was a bit hard./p>

Moving with purpose

Edgar, in Sea of Stars

I describe my own recent affinity for vinyl with a bit of annoyance. If anything, I’m mostly embarrassed to be so sentimental about just stuff. I’ve already got an untameable retro collection of cartridges, discs, and guides eating away at a finite amount of closet and shelf space. But there’s comfort in holding something, purposefully removing the cartridge, or smashing a physical reset button. It c??ompels me into keeping a sea of N64 games.

If anything, Boulanger’s enthusiasm for that sensation offers a far kinder look at the type of person hoarding a stash of CDs to unlock creatures in a ??decades-old PlayStation game.

“There is this understanding, there is a commitment to bein??g in the moment. If you're just playing some playlist on Spotify or whatever in your Bluetooth speaker, it's like, yeah, you just go back 10 seconds to keep getting the dopamine hit of your favorite spike in the melody, or you hit next the second you're not like 100% vibing with the current track or whatever.

Whereas when you have a vinyl, it's kind of like, in a way,  it's a presence. It's not just a thing that you consume. And just all the steps that you have to do to even get it to play, I feel like, your entire body understands that you are committing time to listening to music more mindfully.â€?/p>

It’s a process he sees as almost meditative, or at least shares roots with the grounding, purposeful steps involved in physical media. While there’s no shortage of stories from the director rooted in childhood nostalgia that leads to the creation of games like Sea of Stars, he seems just as compelled by the little processes. “For me, a vinyl is that, I’m going to actually sit down and listen to music. Not on the side, but that's my activity this afternoon, I want to listen to music fully./p>

I grew up using CDs, but I’m incredibly nostalgic for the physicality of the whole playing-a-record process. It’s certainly far more cumbersome to pull out the Silent Hill 4 vi??nyl and listen to 'Room?? of Angel' on a device drastically bigger than my phone, but I just brood better that way. I’m more emotional.

Ultimately, there's always a more critical read of my desire to buy another SNES game at a pawn shop o??r order more pieces of plastic to stack on a shelf, and I get it. I don't necessarily need every piece of digital media I own as a tangible, physical item, but there's value in that very purposeful, involved way an old concert or vinyl setup makes me interact with it. It's certainly a commitment, as Boulanger d??escribed, and in the attention economy where focus is a constant struggle, I appreciate the occasional game or album that demands I slow down.

Sea of Stars launches ??its retail edition worldwide today and is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X. The exclusive edition with a retro game manual, di?gital game soundtrack, poster, and other collectibles launches in Q2, 2024. The 2xLP vinyl soundtrack is available for pre-order now and is scheduled for release in Q3 2024. A digital download code with the full soundtrack is included with the vinyl.

I would argue Sea of Stars was the best indie game of 2023. I'd even go as far as saying it deserved more space in the ga??me of the year conversation, but that's an argument for another time. With 5 millio??n copies sold, Sabotage Studio has announced a new co-op mode coming to the RPG in a future update.

Sea of Stars is getting three-player couch co-op

Sea of Stars just surpassed 5 million copies sold, and as a reward, players are getting 'Single Player+' mode, teased in a new traile?r. The short version is that it will allow players to team up with t??wo friends locally on their RPG adventure. Since the indie game plays like a classic turn-based RPG, how will that work?

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnFLiMeV9B8&t=1s

"Staying true to the game’s core turn-based roots, each player will engage in traversal and combat with a new 'Co-op timed hits' mechanic as they embark with friends on Sea of Starsâ€?grand adventure. The new mode is cu??rrently in development and more details are set to be relea??sed soon."

Sabotage Studio

A new reason to go back and play Sea of Stars again sounds good to me. Along with the ability to play with a few buddies, we also get some new combat and traversal mechanics, though they haven't been thoroughly explained just yet. 'Co-op timed hits' likely refer to the attack and de?fense timing, ??which require the player to tap a button right when their character makes contact with an attack or the enemy attack hits. This results in extra damage on attack and significantly lowered damage taken on defense. Using context clues, it seems that in co-op, those bonuses will require all players to perfectly time the hits.

That should make for chaotic gameplay and probably plenty of arguments. Isn't that exactly what you want out o??f a cou?ch co-op experience?

As 2023 comes to a close, the games ind?ustry once again prepares for another ceremony recognizing the year'??s line-up of adventures that made us laugh, cry, and everything in between. While we all have our personal lists, The Game Awards (TGA) packages that into something a little more formal.

We've crafted our way through Hyrule, rolled in the Forgotten Realms, explored the Settled Systems, and swung through New York. As a massive celebration of video games, TGA acts as a s??ign-off and spotlight for things to come. With its formal list of nominees planned for a November 13 reveal, I figured I'd highlight a few of 2023's dark horse candidates. Commit the box art to memory 'cause I'm hoping for some snubs, sur??prises, and success stories out of these.

Sea of Stars (Sabotage Studio)

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Game Pass, a??nd Xbox Series X/S

Potential Nominations: Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Score?/Music, Best RPG, and Best Indie Game

It's an understatement to say Sea of Stars hit big upon release. Created by Game Award winner Sabotage Studio (The Messenger), the RPG felt like it came out of nowhere and surprised everyone, myself included. It's a turn-based 2D RPG harkening back to classics like Chrono Trigger in more ways than one. Andrea Shearon, who reviewed Sea of Stars and awarded it a 9/10, noted how it manages not only to capt??ure what made retro-R?PGs special but also charts its own path.

As for what titles it may run for, it's no stretch to pin it in the Game of the Year category. Its Metacritic score, 91, ranks second among the other contenders here. There's plenty else it works as a nominee for, too, like Best Indie Game, Best RPG, Best Soundtrack, and Best Art Direction. One that wouldn't be too surprising to see it up for is Best Game Direction, as, for an indie studio, the amount of work and polish Sea of Stars has is impressive. There are plenty ??of stars in the sky right now, but this one might outs??hine others just enough.

Dave the Diver (Mintrocket)

Platforms: PC, Switch

Potential Nominations: Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction??, Best Indie Game, and Best? Debut Indie Game

The second indie on this list, Mintrocket's Dave the Diver captured hearts (and fish) aplenty when it arrived in June. The subnautical adventures of deep-sea diver and sushi restaurant manager Dave as he fishes for the best product was a sleeper hit on PC. Its endearing themes, beautiful graphics, and fun gameplay got many critics (including Christine Choi) 'hooked'. Now, with its release on Nintendo Switch, many more people have taken the dive and fallen in lov??e with?? its variety and charm.

Dave the Diver has a little edge over some due to its massive popularity and continued updates. Of course, the pixel art and graphics are prime for a nod in Best Art Direction. It's easily one for Best Indie Game and Best Debut Indie Game, too, as this is Mintrocket's first game. We may see it given a Best Direction nomination, as some indie studios made the mark in years past. Most recently, BlueTwelve Studio was nominated for its indie darling Stray last year and, in years past, games like Hades and Outer Wilds have garnered a spot in the category.

Hi-Fi Rush (Tango Gameworks/Bethesda)

Platforms: PC, Xbox Game Pass, and Xbox Series X/S

Potential Nominations: Best Game Direction, Best?? Art Direction, Best Audio Desi??gn, and Best Score/Music

Like a Beyonce album, Hi-Fi Rush dropped out of nowhere and surprised everybody. Created by Tango Gameworks (The Evil Within), the action-rhythm game was revealed and released the same day on Game Pass. It follows Chai, a wannabe rockstar with a 'heart' for music, dismantling a large corporation alongside a team of fun misfits with his trusty scrap-metal guitar and killer beat. The rhythm-based gameplay was a hit with many critics, including Cheri Faulkner, who applauded the c?reativity. For audiences, the art style and characters were charming and kept us moving and grooving to its fantastic soundtrack.

There is a possibility that Hi-Fi Rush could get some big nods this Game Awards. As the game was available on Game Pass, the title's got a sizeable reach. Nominations for Best Art Direction, Best Audio Design, and Best Soundtrack seem like easy targets for the music-based game. With the game being the last for iconic director Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil 4, God Hand), Hi-Fi Rush easily makes the case for a Best Direction nod. Either way, the rock n' roll adventure is sure to hit ??some high notes come nominations Monday.

Cocoon (Geometric Interactive/Annapurna Interactive)

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS??5, Switch, Xbox One?, Xbox Game Pass, and Xbox Series X/S

Potential Nominations: ?Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, B??est Art Direction, Best Score/Music, Best Indie Game, and Best Debut Indie Game

Out of all the titles on this list, Cocoon may be the most silent but deadly. The Annapurna Interactive-published platformer blossomed from lead Inside and Limbo gameplay designer Jeppe Carlsen. As a world-hopping beetle, you'll explore various settings via mysterious orbs and solve puzzles to unlock the universe's secrets. Cocoon boasts a 92 on Metacritic, ranking the best of these entries and even some AAA releases this year. Much like the games Jeppe has been part of, Cocoon has followed suit in becoming a staple indie gem.

While indies are a bit foreign for big categories, it's possible Cocoon could sneak up and take some giants down. Best Debut Indie and Best Indie are gimmes. There are strong contenders for Best Soundtrack, Best Art Direction, and Best Game Direction, but the high praise from critics may lead to it being in at least one. Furthermore, when it comes to Game of the Year, indies have been known to sneak in there occasionally, like 2022's Stray and 2020's Hades. Cocoon is one of those titles that may do just that.

Octopath Traveler II (Acquire/Square Enix)

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, and Switch (Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S? in 2??024)

Potential Nominations: Best Art Direction, Best Sco??re/Music, and? Best RPG

Much like its predecessor, Octopath Traveler II continues its reign as a beacon for 2.5D titles. The classic RPG charm from decades ago shines here as the sequel maintains its eight unique protagonists, gorgeous music, and beautiful art style. This time, though, it essentially one-uped the original with more intertwined narratives and new gameplay mechanics. Eric Van Allen found the title captivating, with loads of content and a landmark title for the fairly new franchise. Octopath Traveler II sets the bar for 2.5D games and shows that classic RPGs never went o??ut of style; they've just evolved.

At the 2018 Game Awards, Octopath Traveler was nominated for Best Art Direction, Best Soundtrack, and Best RPG. This year, we may have a case of deja vu. I predict Octopath Traveler II will find itself back in its predecessor's nominated categories. Much of the game's praise revolves around its classic RPG gameplay and 2.5D art direction, all done with a fantastic soundtrack. Like the rest of the entries, its competition is very solid but not irreplaceable. To that end, Octopath Traveler II could stand up to? those and earn a highly-??coveted spot.

Chapter 4 of Jusant.
Screenshot by Destructoid.

Jusant (Don't Nod)

Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Game Pass, and Xbox Series X/S

Potential Nominations:?? Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, and?? Best Narrative

French for ebb (the motion of waves), Jusant paints a new horizon for Don't Nod. The company known for narrative-driven titles like Tell Me Why and Life is Strange took a risk when announcing a rock-climbing platformer as their next ti??tle. However, people fell in love with its simple and endearing gameplay and art style, alongside its usage of environmental storytelling.

As a lone wanderer, you climb up an abandoned tower and discover relics of another time. Smangaliso Simelane highlights the simplistic yet thoughtful gameplay, as it makes for a wholesome and pleasurable experience??. Jusant is proof that Don't Nod can go outside the box, and this is just the tip of the iceberg for new ideas and concepts.

With Jusant's recent release, it may hinder its chances at big nominations. However, Don't Nod's departure from the norm and risk-taking could pay off. The game's narrative is a hit or miss for some, but truth be told, it's reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus in t?erms of using the environment as a narrative device. In terms of its direction, both art and game, it's the risks that come in, as the simplistic art and gameplay make for an accessible experience.

Many indie titles in the past several years have taken visual inspiration from previous generations.?? Some draw from the NES and SNES eras, but lately more are tak??ing cues from the PS1/N64 generation.

These distinctive visual echoes from years past have undoubtedly made it far easier to appreciate the aesthetic while playing something ?notably contemporary. At least, that's how I view many of these games, since occasional visits to previo?us generations can sometimes be painful.

That said, some of the best games from the last several years have retro games to t?hank, be they platformers, survival horror, or RPGs. Some of these are the best in their respective years with others being quite underrated gems.

CrossCode

CrossCode is an ARPG with a 16-bit artstyle while retaining smoother combat and exploration. The store page makes its Zelda inspiration clear concerning how dungeons are designed around puzzle-solving and new equipment. Something that distinguishes itself from games like Link to the Past is the focus on ranged combat.

??Protagonist Lea can attack at both close and long distances, with either method having a significantly faster pace than its inspirations. Coupl?e this with a breadth of customization options for Lea's build, and combat always stays satisfying as the player's skill grows alongside Lea's strength.

The story can be hit or miss as CrossCode follows the amnesiac protagonist throughout her journey across the CrossWorlds MMORPG, but the gameplay always remains engaging. Clocking in at around 30 hours for the main story, CrossCode is a lengthy and memorable retro adventure.

Dusk

Titles taking inspiration from '90s FPS's have gained traction, but arguably none do it better than Dusk. ?On top of being one of the best retro shooters in recent memory, it's potentially one of the greatest shooters ever.

It takes visual cues from games like Blood but plays like an improved version of Quake. Players practically glide across levels using a mix of mid-20th-century weapons along with s??o?me more fantastical inclusions to decimate cultists and eldritch evils.

Each weapon is exhilarating to use, and I argue movement is better than even Doom Eternal still. At around 10 hours long, Dusk doesn't overstay its welcome and leaves a better impression of boomer shooters than even its inspirations can offer. Despite only being around five years old, its popularity helped earn it a free HD remaster.

Katana Zero

Continuing my trend of focusing on titles released in the last five years is Katana Zero, a slick action-platformer with several interesting gimmicks. It plays almost like a 2D Ghostrunner, as the protagonist only dies in one hit and primarily uses a katana. What Ghostrunner doesn't have is a dedic??ated slowdown mechanic that ties into the story.

What makes Katana Zero great is not only its mix of brutal and fast combat, but a genuinely intriguing story about identity, reliving traumatizing memories, and memory manipulation. It lives up to its neo-noir tag as an?? intertwining web ?of conspiracies forms with protagonist Zero in the middle.

It's a s??urprisingly tragic and heartbreaking narrative that also happens to be one of the best indie platformers. A free DLC has been in production for years to conclude t?he story, and I still need it.

NORCO

I'm not much of a point-and-click adventure game fan, but NORCO enthralled me. Inspired by neo-noir adventure titles like Snatcher, NORCO takes the cyberpunk genre into Southern Gothic territory. It also happens to be one of the most melancholy games ??I've played recently.

The perpetually dimly lit Louisiana atmosphere, slow jazzy soundtrack, and contemplative dream-like story create a genuinely moving experience. Its pixel art style greatly adds to this, coming to life in the way '90s graphic adventures did.

NORCO tapers off slightly toward the end of its four-to-six-hour adventure, but that does little to spoil the package. Its simple puzzles a??lso make it approachable enough for non-gamer sci-fi and Southern Gothic fans.

Pseudoregalia

Pseudoregalia has some of the best movement I've ever seen in a platformer, and it stars a goat-rabbit girl. This 3D platformer takes visual cues from fifth-generation systems, namely the N64, while remaining structured as a Metroidvania.

Its structure is like any other as players guide protagonist Sy??bil across Castle Sansa to collect new abilities and powers. Almost every area is available to some?? degree at the start, but the setting only shines once some more abilities are acquired.

The entire movelist in Pseudoregalia is snappy and satisfying, doing a wonderful job at showing Sybil's skills as an expert acrobat who is drip-fed upgr??ades throughout her roughly five-hour journey. What it ultimately does best is emulate a retro platformer's aesthetics while outclassing its contemporaries.

Sea of Stars

Sea of Stars is among the more recent titles on this list, since it came out in August. Still, it made a splash in the same month Baldur's Gate 3 launched for being a loving tribute to 16-bi??t RPGs while standing on its o??wn as a solid game.

Combat takes place in turn-based battles, taking cues from Super Mario RPG's timing-based attack system. It's ??honestly an underrated method for imp?lementing turn-based combat, as it keeps encounters interesting when done right.

The art and narrative are arguably two of Sea of Stars' biggest draws. Its pixel art environments give the world an inviting feeling and lively portraits bring the cast to life. Helping is the story ?itself featu??ring an endearing set of characters who fit perfectly into a grand RPG adventure.

Signalis

Signalis is studio rose-engine's debut title and is a remarkable work of retro sci-fi horror. It takes cues from various works ranging from Kubrick and Anno to cr?eate a PS1-styled nightma?re with a heartbreaking narrative.

The basic premise sees Elster, a Replika who cras?hes on an icy planet and whose human partner is missing. Her only option is to venture into a nearby facility overrun by berserk Replikas and horrors beyond comprehension.

Despite taking visual inspiration from various anime and films alongside gameplay from retro games, Signalis is almost entirely its own beast narratively speaking. Elster's tale of finding her partner is as surreal as it is soul-wrenching and unabashedly queer. This is a must-play for? any fan ?of cosmic horror and dystopia sci-fi.

Vampire Survivors

Vampire Survivors was one of 2022's biggest hits for a reason. At an incredibly cheap price, players get a simple but compelling action game. Its minimal graphics also help make it accessible to pretty much anyone who has a computer made in the ??last decade.

It also has an interesting premise for how simple it is. Vampire Survivors is a time-based survival title where players get th?e power to become stronger than a bullet hell boss. The only active thing you do is move around as progressively more projectiles and enemies flood the screen.

The number of enemies on screen is staggering by the end of a run and would feel overwhelming if not for the player's scaling abilities. The incredibly engaging loop ??also helps as it's impossible to resist trying at least one mor??e time.

World of Horror

World of Horror officially launched this October, but fans have enjoyed the horror RPG for years? in its Early Access builds. Taking cues from Junji Ito manga and 1-bit computer games, this horrifying title looks and plays like a cursed adventure title from the?? '80s.

Despite its monochromatic color scheme, World of Horror's excellent art direction captures what makes Ito's art so unnerving. Its structure of short runs with randomized adventures also emphasizes valuing every resource and every moment as all continuously dwind??le.

As frustrating as randomization can be, it works in World of Horror's case as it helps further cement how hopeless the player's fight is. They are facing off against incomprehens??ible cosmic horrors, and they aren't going down with??out a fight.

Games like Chrono Trigger aged well, and Sabotage Studio knows as much. It’s evident in the open-world encounters, ambitious soundtrack, vivid environments, and even a few overarching plot ideas within Sea of Stars, ??the developer's latest, classically-inspired RPG.

You can't mention it without some combination of Japan's RPG legacy greats coming up, and for good reason. Sea of Stars embraces the games that inspired it and the generations of roleplaying adventures that followed, creating a delightful mishmash that doesn't fall into heavy-handed uses of do-you-remember-when moments. There's clear adoration for the threads it's woven together, but? Sabotage St?udio still crafted an experience memorable in its own right.

A touch homesick

Screenshot via Destructoid

Admittedly, I’ve long managed an awkward push-and-pull relatio?nship with games clearly crafted from nostalgia. Plenty of my favorites fall flat when they’re no longer contextualized by the original era. Some game?play gimmicks lost their flavor somewhere between the 0s and today's conveniences, while other tributes falter when revisiting the magic of some of those stories.

Right, I'm a sourpuss when it comes to some ham-fisted throwbacks. Perhaps that comes with trying one too many games that tease an ode to an old favorite, or maybe I just didn't love a few of those games as much as I thought. Regardless, I've softened in the last year or so with my adoration for Chained Echoes and now Sea of Stars.

Sea of Stars (PC[Reviewed], Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S)
Developer: Sabotage Studio
Publisher: Nintendo
Released: August 28, 2023
MSRP: $34.99

The tale begins with Valere, a staff-wielding monk aligned with the moon, and Zale, her blade-wielding counterpart with an affinity for the sun. Destiny marks them as Solstice Warriors, and that's where Sea of Stars begins its traditional storyt?elling with a battle of good versus? evil.

As kids, you'll learn there was some level of dissent over handing down the duty. The more powerful figures in their lives wished to see them grow as normal children, while the elder mage Headmaster Moraine committed to raising them both as Solstice Warriors to protect their world from a repeat tragedy. Valere and Zale embrace the?ir training, spending years at the Zenith Academy before striking out to defeat monsters ??spawned by the world's big bad, The Fleshmancer.

In the interest of sparing you from spoilers, I'??ll refrain from in-the-weeds story details beyond the game's first few hours.

To far away times

Screenshot via Destructoid

On its face, Sea of Stars comes off a little bare bones, but it weaves and twists along the way to its normal end, unlocking the way to a follow-up true ending. Even as someone with limited experience playing The Messenger, I surely missed any winks-and-nods to Sabotage's original project; I found?? the journey constantly endearing. There's nothing tiresome about its retro approach to estab?lishing the world and its strife, but even as just a vehicle for the characters to play along in, it's well worth the ride.

That brings me to the moment, the ah-ha! moment where ??everything clicks, and I'm too charmed to step away. After a series of underground mining puzzles helping a village of magical mole guys, I was already a tad fluttery. The combination of Malkomud's over-dramatic dialogue one of the aforementioned mole guys and defeating his adorably dopey lizard pet escalated the pace after back-to-back tutorials. That, plus solving the underground puzzles, had me feeling a bit genius. Simple and satisfying, just enough to make me feel like I'd learned something from all that tutorial exposition.

So, I save the day as Valere, and mosy along to an outdoor elevator, and I'm greeted by The Sleeper; he's my hook. The Sleeper is a giant dragon wrapping itself around the mountainside, and the party teased their resident chef friend, Garl, for his shock and awe upon seeing the massive serpent. I was left in the same place, so no worries, Garl. Even as someone who had no idea, no context for whatever this thing was supposed to be or do, The Sleeper had me enamored. It's an early tease of one of Sea of Stars' greatest strengths. When yo???u meet The Sleeper, the game combines the beast's magnificent rumbling, scale, and design into something special.

Sea of Stars Review: This dragon, The Sleeper, is one of the coolest creatures - showcasing use of scale and detail
Screenshot via Destructoid

I didn't know what was happening, but I wanted to do it again. And since that was the moment, I quickly went from PC to Steam Deck.

There’s something so charming about the moments of shock the disbelief Sea of Starspixelated party shows in their portraits and, sometimes, sprites. The moment-to-moment adventuring is delightful, sure, but the distinctly retro style combined with Sabotage's vibrant, colorful environments thrills the child in me. The little girl who crept forward too clos?e to the TV, with controller in hand and eyes as wid?e as they'd go.

Sabotage delivers on that bewilderment in big ways, like introducing The Sleeper, and small, like finding a hidden chest behind a waterfall or discovering off-the-beaten-path enemies. The exploration between zones often contrasts in significant ways, with big leaps between environments, music, and even some puzzle gimmicks. The game uses those modern sensibilities again with a major e?mphasi?s on verticality. It's not enough to roam those 2D landscapes like they're simple, open boxes. There's paths tucked away to new treasures, and the road forward isn't always obvious, with options to climb, jump, or swim elsewhere.

Perfect timing

Sea of Stars Review: Sabotage Studio's nostalgic RPG features brightly colored cutscenes and detailed pixel-animations
Screenshot via Destructoid

On the note of beloved childhood RPGs, Sea of Stars healed an old wound left behind by Final Fantasy VIII's battle system. While I remain an FFVIII apologist until death, and I won't defend most of the combat design, I've got pretty irritating memories of trying to time Squall's damn Gunblade trigger just? right.

Sea of Stars certainly plays better in ??that regard, but I don't, and it doesn't matter. The traditional turn-based combat concepts I get, no problem. There's flashy combo attacks, and its Lock system that roulettes its way through different damage types, indicating which you'll need to utilize against enemies to break their cast. Those pieces clicked, but I'm absolutely terrible with the game's trigger mechanic.

Even af??ter dozens of hours, I'd still sit straight up for another boss encounter to watch for the perfect moment to strike. Battles require attention with their use of timed blocks and hits, that is to say, if I want that number to go up Valere's bouncing Moonerang skill then I better watch with my bumper finger ready. And yes, it did take me a pathetic amount of time to get the achievement for 25 hits in a row, but I did it.

Screenshot via Destructoid

A faithful recipe

It's layer after layer of the little things, with Sea of Stars. There's nothing overly complicated about those puzzles or even the more pe??rsonally challenging bits, like timing a hit just right. There's no need to reinvent the wheel, but we can certainly spruce it up a bit. It's a matter of taking those pieces that work but not mimicking those retro experiences wholesale because, again, some of?? those elements just didn't fly.

We can compare it to just about anything of that era, and it's not technically wrong, but it's one that became more and more personal to my own taste with time. On more than one occasion, there were those moments of reflection with "the tone is kind of bizarre, like Earthbound" and "look, everyone is following me, remember Secret of Mana?"

Screenshot via Destructoid

As a kid growing up alongside some of those early Super Nintendo and PlayStation RPGs, Sea of Stars feels like the classics I remember; and I mean that in the purest sense. When you’re toddling about, hardly old enough to understand some of the words on the screen, nostalgia often compensates for aspects that may have grown less appealing through the years. However, if I were to dream up any old favorite from memory, I'd imagine it'd turn out something like this. Sea of Stars is e?ndlessly charming, bright, and packing a ton of heart another timeless addition among the cl??assics.

The best menu screens in games can be articulated in many ways, just like the sheer amount of options ?you can get from the feature ?itself. In my mind, they're determined by the music, the visuals, and how unique they can be. You don't want to see a bland introduction to a magnificent game. Here are the top 10 best main menu screens in games, ranked.

Before we start, I have some honorable mentions. While it's too soon to rank this alongside long-standing greats, Sea of Stars' main menu screen is an impressive introduction to its world. The flickering of the flames reflecting on the pixel-based characters, and the gorgeous backdrop is absolutely stunning. Additionally, Rayman 2: The Great Escape's menu features strange, yet enticing music wit?h a view of the world we're about to explore. There's also a cute teensie on the left side, welcoming you to the game with its hat.

[caption id="attachment_400167" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The Super Metroid main menu is creepy! Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

10. Super Metroid

During the SNES era, gamers weren't anticipating a cinematic introduction to the game. However, Super Metroid features tense music and neat transitions of scenes that feature the creepy sci-fi world of the game. It then reveals a Metroid tr??apped within a pipe with the machinery flickering in green light. I?t's genuinely creepy to see fallen bodies next to the machine as well. It's a perfect introduction to this game.

[caption id="attachment_399796" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Psychonauts has one of the best main menus in gaming because of how creative it is. Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

9. Psychonauts

Double Fine is a developer known for its wild worlds, game concepts, and characters. This menu follows that same idea. One of the strangest (and coolest) is in Psychonauts, in which you're Raz running around a brain. The concept of the game is that you're trying to fix the issues of a person by infiltrating their mind. It's a clever main menu concept for a game like this and is certainly unique. I also love Double Fine's record-based main menu design in Brutal Legend, but Psychonauts just edges it out.

[caption id="attachment_399797" align="alignnone" width="1200"]L.A. Noire intro Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

8. L.A. Noire

This may be a controversial pick, but L.A. Noire has a unique menu design that complements the subject matter. You get the old-fashioned black-and-white styling mixed in with a shadowy figure of the text. The light shone from the car gives a wonderful effect on the brick wall, adding to the atmosphere of the scene. While it can be annoying to have a gentleman walking in and out of the menu??, it's certainly an interesting take on this classic gaming feature that we haven't seen before.

//youtu.be/cHGF302fBZk

7. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Yes, this is a simplistic menu for such a huge RPG like Starfield, but it more than makes up for it with the theme alone. You hea?r a majestic choir and triumphant orchestra calling to you. It gets you pumped for the adventure you're about to have. The logo also looks iconic amongst the white mist a?nd the black background.

//youtu.be/njoPUWILwpo

6. Pokemon Red & Blue

Despite the limited power of the Game Boy, Pokemon Red & Blue still had amazing intros and menus. You see two Pokemon fighting it out in the intro underscored by a memorable theme song. It then constantly switches between the different Pocket Monsters you'll find in the game like Snorlax, Mankey, and Ditto. It's simple but "super effective"at introducing us to the world of Pokemon.

//youtu.be/DRgLR-cPMls

5. Xenoblade Chronicles

The Xenoblade Chronicles title screen is super simple.?? Yo??u see the Monado sword stuck in the ground all by itself. However, the beauty of the world surrounds us as day turns to night. You also see the shine of the metal blade against the sunlight, which is a nice touch. The Monado also glows in the dark as the stars shine brightly above. The emotional music is engrossing as you simply stare at this stunning scene. This is one of the best main menu screens just from how stunning it is.

//youtu.be/kAwwQ7dTjRY

4. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

I know, many say that Ocarina of Time's menu screen is better, but the one from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess holds more prestige for me. You see ??Link riding Epona valiantly across the Bridge of Eldin and the wilderness of Hyrule. In the background is a somewhat creepy choir ?singing the main theme of the game. Then, the intro transitions to Wolf Link who howls to a strange golden wall in the distance.

You also have a ?hint of the "Midna's Theme" from the music, hinting at how prevalent your partner will be in the plot and gameplay. You're then left with a feeling of dread as you only have the sound of wind to keep you company. It's a brilliant?? main menu that pulls you into the intended darker atmosphere of the game.

//youtu.be/IM-r2hxtO8g

3. Kingdom Hearts 2

Possibly with the prettiest main menu theme ever "Dearly Beloved," Kingdom Hearts 2 has one of the best intros in gaming history. The credits r??oll and the music begins to build up. As you begin to see Sora emerge into the title screen, you hear the harp play and the bass strings refer to the protagonist.

It sounds like an orchestra prepping to play before a concert occurs. It then calms down for a brief second until the full menu appears. Then, the piano b??egins to play the main melody, and each wonderful ins?trument of the piece blends together in a truly "beloved" way.

Seeped with the sound of waves from Sora's home world Destiny Islands, you remember where the end goal lies. The blu??e streak to the ??right also has a wave-like gradient to it. I just noticed this as I was writing, but the color of the streak goes from navy to turquoise to yellow like a beach. Neat!

[caption id="attachment_399816" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Persona 5 menu Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

2. Persona 5

Persona 5 has so much style behind its UI and graphical ingenuity. However, the main menu stands out as well. The introduction of the train pop art and then the Phantom Thieves at a stop is fantastic. I love the striking red and white style as you see the trains beside them rush o??n either side.

The music gives you the depiction that this is going to be a coo??l, suave adventure. When Futaba gets off h??er seat, you'll see a graffiti mark on her seat. It also shows Haru in the back, showing her more shy side.

Personally, I prefer the calmer nature of this scene to the more energetic Persona 5 Royal's, but it's a personal ta??ste, for sure. It gives a more underground feel that matches the Phantom Thieves better.

//youtu.be/ZT9DST_M_g8

1. Mega Man 2

Admittedly, I haven't grown up during the NES era, but my goodness, this is one of the greatest main menu screens in a game, bar no??ne. You start with an overview of the city with a brief summary of the story. The music begins slow and pleasant, but as the camera moves up the skyscraper, the music gets faster until you get one of the most badass menu themes ever. You can't help but get hyped.

You see Megaman's hair waving in the air as he readies himself for his tough adventure. When you choose a selection, he then teleports away. Despite having better technology today, this main menu still stand??s as one of the most epic. Let's set out and defeat each of the bosses (or at least hope we can). This is one of the best main menu screens ever just due to the e?xcitement I get every time I boot it up.

Sabotage Studio's Sea of Stars launched this week, with a spot on both Xbox and PlayStation's subscription services. Despite that, it looks like the new RPG is already chalking up strong sales. The studio's confirmed that on day one, Sea of Stars accrued 100,000 copies sold.

It's a strong day one for an RPG from a relatively smaller studio. As of this writing, Sea of Stars is sitting on the Steam Top Sellers chart alongside the likes of Starfield, Baldur's Gate 3, and Armored Core 6.

But it's an especially interesting stat given that Sea of Stars is available on both Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Game Catalog. It's at least an indication that Sea of Stars is becoming another surprise?? hit, in a? year already full of bangers.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jkeh6O1Rzs

Starry eyed surprise

There's a few good reasons to pick up a game, even if you have it through a subscription. I know I've personally used Xbox Game Pass as a way to demo a game, and if it's something I know I'll want to play later on down the line, I'll buy it so I don't lose access if it leaves Pass. Sea of Stars had a demo prior to launch,? and may ha??ve left a strong enough impression that people locked their license in based off that.

Or maybe people are also like me, in that they buy games without remembering they were on Xbox Game Pass/PS Plus. I'm not the best barometer fo?r sensible purchasin?g decisions.

Either way, it's a reaffirming notion to see Sabotage's RPG chalking up numbers fast. It's been a golden year for RPGs, and it's nice to see that's not jus??t for the bi?ggest blockbusters.

We're still picking away at Sea of Stars here, but if you're a fan of chill fishing minigames, Mario R?PG-style combat, and great music, it's worth a look.

Role-playing games can often promise a grandiose adventure, and there's certainly been no shortage of those this year. Some of the heaviest hitters of 2023 are lengthy RPG journeys that advertise dozens upon dozens of hours of questing and storytelling. So it's nice when a game like Sea of Stars lets me hang up my ?adventurer's hat for a little b??it of fishing.

I'm only a few hours into Sea of Stars, which is out today on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC. It's a chill, interesting RPG that definitely has some love for the golden oldies, but also has some neat ideas of its own. Not surprising, given its the team that made a similar retro-modern fusion in The Messenger.

And while I could easily talk about the combat system and its intricacies, or the art and music, or some intrig??uing character writing for the extended cast, I'm here for the fish. The second I saw a lake with swimming silhouettes lurking below the surface, I knew where I was spending my time.

Gone fishin'

Sea of Stars' ?fishing minigame is found throughout its overworld, in designated fishing holes dotting the landscape. Just head in and you can cast a rod into the blue, looking to hook a catch.

The premise is simple, even if not obviously explained: keep the fish within you??r bounded lines while reeling them in. Tug too much while it's outside, and line tension will build up to a breaking point if you let it. Oh, and if the fish leaps in the air, you can do a timed smack of the A button (or respective press on your controller of choice) to get a little stun-strike.

[caption id="attachment_399957" align="alignnone" width="640"] Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

Talking to others who are much farther in than me, Sea of Stars fishing does not get much more complicated than that. Find a lake, cast a rod, get some fish. You can filet them up for cooking? materials, or release them back.

A nearby board tracks what fish you've caught from the lake. There might be prizes for filli??ng those out. But honestly, I don't really care, because that's not why I'm here. I'm just here for a chill time.

[caption id="attachment_399955" align="alignnone" width="640"] Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

It's not like Sea of Stars is particularly arduous or anything. But as the size of games has grown, I really appreciate when the b?ig ones offer these little respites.

Take a load off

Part of it is the sheer number of massive, huge hour count games. I'm led to believe Sea of Stars is on the shorter side. But in a year where I've covered the likes of Octopath Traveler 2, Final Fantasy XVI, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Baldur's Gate 3, h?aving little moments of calm s??prinkled throughout the journey is nice.

Especially with Sea of Stars, I love how its a tiny excursion. You veer off the path, like a detour in Super Mario World, to a side area that's just about you and the fish. None of the ponds I've sat beside so far have had combat zon?es or anything else major in t?hem. Just fishing Zen.

It's not just fishing; any minigame can provide this. I've heard there's a board game in Sea of Stars that's quite engaging. But I find these little spots in other fantasy worlds too. Whether it's Fort Condor in Final Fantasy VII Remake, or Gwent in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, these side moments are wonderful distractions. Heck, my love for these side ventures is probably why I've been so determined to get the Triple Triad mount in Final Fantasy XIV. It's close now, I can feel it.

[caption id="attachment_399954" align="alignnone" width="640"] Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

But these side activities also help inform our party members. They're not just roaming adventurers who have to be heroes all the time. They can break off to run a blitzball squad, or strike up a game of Caravan with a roaming merchant. Or if you're Kazuma Kiryu / Kasuga Ichiban, you do a lot of side activities.

Point being, I like the little moments of calm. They create a good ebb and flow to the journey, and give a story like Sea of Stars a nice moment to relax, forget about your troubles, and snag some fish. If that's your jam, Sea of Stars is out now, and it's on both PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Xbox Game Pass too.

Sabotage Studio has revealed that the upcoming retro-inspired RPG Sea of Stars will be available as a PlayStation Plus Game Catalog title on day one of its release. The official release date for the pixel RPG is August 29. By joining the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, all PS+ Extra and Premium members will get full a??ccess to the game on launch day.

If the visuals remind you of a lot of old-school SNES RPGs don't worry, that's intentional. Sea of Stars is technically a prequel to 2D action platformer The Messenger, which was also created by Sabotage Studio. We gave The Messenger a flawless 10/10 when it was released back in 2018.

The list of games coming to PlayStation Plus for August has not been released, though I expect it will soon. The free games are added on the first Tuesday of the month which for August is actually August 1. With Sea of Stars coming to the catalo??g, August will already be a great one for PS+ members.

Demo available now on PS4 and PS5

A demo for Sea of Stars was also released on PS4 and PS5 today. Sabotage Studio made sure to point out that whil??e the areas in the demo will be in the final game, the exact slice of the demo does not reveal any major spoilers from the main story. The demo highlights some gameplay systems and the mechanics around dungeon crawling and combat. And, while there are no major story spoilers, it does provide a sense of tone and vibe.

The beautiful pixel RPG looks reminds me a lot of Chained Echoes. Our very own Eric Van Allen called Chained Echoes a surprise RPG hit when it was released late last year. It's possible Sea of Stars could share a similar fate when it re??leases next month.

Sea of Stars releases on PC, Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation? ??5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on August 29.

A hot season starting to cool down

This year's summer has been chock-a-block with incredible games from Final Fantasy XVI to Street Fighter 6, but things are starting to cool down with the August 2023 games lineup. There are still some great games like Sea of Stars and Baldur's Gate 3 on the horizon. However, we can take a bit of a breather as most of these anticipated titles a??re fairly?? niche. Here's everything you can expect from the August 2023 games release schedule.

The legendary studio behind Dark Souls and Elden Ring (From Software) is bringing back a mech favorite with Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon.  The Steam page claims it's bringing the developer's "signature action gameplay" into the mix with "fast-paced, omni-directional battles." Each fight will be set in?? "massive stages," and now with better graphical fidelity, the action will look even more intense and stunning. While there isn't any Souls-like combat from this sequel, you can deeply customize your mech just how you'd like it.

Your judgment will impact your mech's movement and even its battle style. The Steam page claims that "each mission can be approached with a unique mech strategy." Something you'd expect from From Software is boss battles; this game comes with them in spades. Hopefully, this game lives up to the extremely high expectations of the developer's huge fanbase after its 2022 magnum opus Elden Ring. From the ?pedigree alone, this is one of? the most anticipated August 2023 games.

RPG fans, rejoice! Baldur's Gate 3 is finally leaving early access on August 3. There is deep customization in the game, allowing you to pick from 12 classes (with 46 subclasses) and 11 races (including 31 subraces) for your hero/heroine. Larian Studios also claims your decisions will leave an impact on the storyline. "Every choice you make drives your story forward, each decision leaving your mark on the world," says Larian on the game's Steam page. "Define your legacy, nurture relationships and create enemies, and s?olve problems your way."

We'll see how grandiose the story is when the game fully releases, but it certainly sounds promising. As the game is set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, it will be based on the 5e ruleset. You'll be rolling the dice for your actions during combat and can interact with the environment in unique ways. Oh, and you can have romantic relations with a bear...if that's your thing.

There are also 80 talents to learn in this FPS single player campaign. As one of the battle mages, you're tasked to save the world from villains who plan to send it to the abyss.

The game looks exciting with plenty of intriguing enemies to fight and a sense of verticality within its level design. The graphics look pristine as well with ??gorgeous visual effects and grand environments.  It's one of the more intriguing Augus??t 2023 games on this list.

EA has a busy month in store because Madden NFL 24 is also dropping in August. Instead of slinging spells, you'll be throwing footballs and handling them better with an improved version of FieldSENSE. EA claims on the game's Steam page that it's "giving you greater control and delivering realism to all the ways you play??????????????????????????." Additiona?lly, there's a new feature called the SAPIEN technology. Apparently, it adds more realism to the body definition and variation of the athletes' physiques. EA claims this results in "realistic player movement."

EA also says that your teammates' ratings and situational awareness have improved since the last game with better AI. Thankfully, Madden NFL 24 will include crossplay, allowing you to play with your friends on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. While this is not my particular cup of tea (soccer should be called football, damn it), this year's Madden seems to be a big step up. It might be worth waiting for it to come to Xbox Game Pass, however, like Madden NFL 23.

Trailer

Sea of Stars is the standout indie out of the August 2023 games list. Sporting wonderful 16-bit inspired graphics, Sea of Stars will wrap you up in some good ol' JRPG goodness. It's seemingly inspired by classics like Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG. There's a turn-based combat system that r?elies on timed button presses. If you time t??hem correctly, your damage will increase. As the game proceeds, each combo will progress in difficulty.

The animations are absolutely gorgeous within the art style, adding even more of a nostalgic rush to the game. The game does feel modernized, however, with no random encounters and no grinding to speak of. Go at your own pace and stop The Fleshmancer performing their evil doings. To keep you entertained, there are other activities in Sea of Stars, such as fis??hing, cooking, and a table??top game called Wheels.

Birth

I'll be honest, Birth definitely looked unique but I wasn't too sure exactly what I had just seen by the time the trailer was over. The ocean will flow into all consoles

Sabotage is bringing its upcoming RPG Sea of Stars to more platforms at launch. Today, the studio confirms that Sea of Stars will head to Xbox consoles on August 29, the sa??me day as it arrives for PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo?? Switch.

This updated launch platform coverage includes both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, so both generations will be able to play the new adventure. There's also a demo out, though it's currently o?nly available on the Nintendo eShop.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3NNRkR1fSw

Sea of Stars sees two protagonists, the Children of the Solstice. With one wielding sun powers and the other moon, they combine to create Eclipse Magic, the only thing capable of stopping The Fleshmancer. It looks quite nostalgic, helped by the fact that Chrono Trigger's Yasunori Mitsuda is a specil guest composer on the soundtrack??.

You're a sea full of stars

This RPG is also the latest project from Sabotage, the studio behind 2018's The Messenger. In that one, the team tackled a different kind of old-school genre in the action-platformer. Here, with Sea of Stars, they take on the classic turn-based RPG.

I played a little bit of the demo and found it intriguing, though I'm mostly holding off for the full game. I will say, I do really like the look that Sabotage has crafted for Sea of Stars so far. It's a colorful world with some great little details. Now, Xbox?? players will also be able to see it for themselves at launch ??alongside other platforms.

Sea of Stars arrives on Xbox, PlayStation, PC, a?nd Switch on August 2?9, 2023.

Sailing the high seas this summer

The long-awaited RPG from Sabotage Stud??io is finally set for release this August. And if that's a bi?t too far away, there's also some good news: a demo goes live on the Nintendo Switch eShop today.

Sea of Stars was first unveiled back in 2020. Though the date has shuffled around a bit since then, the throwback RPG has consistently looked good in showcases and streams. Well, today, you won't have to just watch and wonder. The Switch eShop demo is live now. Plus, August 29 is the new target date.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRwB7RH1lVE

Sabotage made a big splash with The Messenger, a throwback to the action-platformers of old. With Sea of Stars, the t??eam looks back towards the RPG? genre instead, while still giving it a polished-throwback style.

Fittingly, Chrono series ?composer Yasunori Mitsuda is also on deck as a special guest composer alongside Sabotage's Eric W. Brown. And the slice we saw in today's trailer looks absolutely fantastic??.

A new adventure

The demo is only out on Nintendo Switch right now, though Sea of Stars is also slated to launch on PC and PlayStation on August 29. No word has been given yet as to what date the other platforms will get the demo, though the game's social media account confirms this demo will be available on othe??r platforms later ??this year.

Either way, it's a nice surprise amid a sea of shadow-drops and reveals that hit at today's Nintendo Direct. Though Metroid and Game Boy are all hitting too, I'm definitely setting aside some hard drive space and bandwidth for some Sea of Stars.

Sabotage's RPG is taking some extra time

Sea of Stars is charting a course for next year, rather than this one. Sabotage Studio announced today that Sea of Stars will now release in 2023.

The retro-style RPG was revealed in 2020 as the next project from Sabotage, the team behind The Messenger. Sea of Stars was set for a holiday 2022 launch during an Indie World S??howcase last December, but now it's aiming a b?it further beyond.

"Keeping in mind our two main priorities—quality of life for our team and quality of the finished game—we can now confirm that Sea of Stars will be released in 2023," today's statement reads.

It's not all bad news for patient fans, though. Sabotage thanks the community for its support and closes off with a note that it's looking into options for getting a "playable slice" of Sea of Stars out to everyone this year.

//twitt?er.com/seaofstarsgame/status/1542523812045922311

Sea full of stars

It might be a bummer, but Sea of Stars does seem like it's coming together pretty darn well. Even back in our first look at the project, it was a really cool blend of classic ideas and modern design, like a love letter to the likes of Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG.

For the team's health and for the game's benefit, a little extra wait is a good thing. Considering how well The Messenger came together, I've got high hopes for Sea of Stars.

It's not like 2022 is hurting for RPGs either. Just in July, two big games are launching in Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and the HD-2D remake of Live A Live. Plus, the newly announced Crisis Core remaster is also aiming for this winter. We've got plenty to play while we wait for Sea of Stars to arrive in 2023.

From Chicory to Omori, it was a pretty colorful cavalcade of games

Nintendo debuted a new Indie World Showcase this morning, spotlighting the independent games coming to the system this December and ?into t?he new year. It was a lineup that was filled with surprises, new footage, and of course, some surprise "available later today" announcements.

Opening the show was Sea of Stars, the classically-styled RPG from The Messenger developer Sabotage Studio. It's got a great look, some good ol' RPG combat, and features some music from Yasunori Mitsuda of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross fame. It's aiming for a holiday 2022 launch.

In the games that followed, there were some dates laid out for indies across the coming months. OlliOlli World locked in a Feb. 8, 2022 launch date for its skateboarding world, and River City Girls 2 has a window of Summer 2022. A few new surprises showed up, like point-and-click mystery throwback Loco Motive and the seemingly heartbreaking musical adventure After Love EP, both targeting the summer of 2022.

On the "out today" front, a few games will be available sometime today on the Nintendo Switch. The headliner is Chicory: A Colorful Tale, a wonderful game that seems very well suited for the Switch. Dungeon Munchies looks like a cool dungeon crawler with a focus on cooking your enemies to make yourself stronger. Puzzle game Timelie gets both a demo and a launch today, and board game collection Let's Play! Oink Games also hits the Switch today.

Finally, closing the show out is Omori, the beautiful and haunting RPG from Omocat LLC that became something of a cult hit around the end of last year. It certainly comes bearing a content warning, but if you're looking for an RPG that doesn't feel like any other RPG you've played in recent memory, it seems well-suited to the task. Omori will hit Switch in spring 2022.
