"Souls series", the name fans give to every game in the same style FromSoftware has released since 2011's Dark Souls, has enjoyed both a lot of success a?nd the important di?stinction of providing the hardest challenge a (single player) gamer can find.

Most of the challenge in these games comes from their incredible boss fights, a then-in-decline gameplay element that this series clearly revived and reminded everyone should never go away. So, let's look at the most memo?rably nightmarish bosses in the series, shall we?

Rom the vacuous spider from Bloodborne

Rom, The Vacuous Spider (Bloodborne)

Bloodborne is famous for the fast-paced action it used to completely re-energize the Souls formula. Most of its memorable bosses are as fast as the player, but don't be fooled; one of the most challenging? battles in the game actually co??mes from a deceptively slow critter.

Rom will lure players into?? a false sense of ease by making its early stage really easy, and then things will get harder, gradually, to an almost unbearable point. Not only is the arena filled with loads of guardian spiders you need to be wary of, but Rom also gains the ability to? summon rather unpredictable and hard-to-dodge AOE blasts. Do not underestimate this foul thing.

Ludwig, The Accursed (Bloodborne, The Old Hunters DLC)

For a Soulsborne game, Bloodborne goes kinda easy on players. That, however, changes completely if we're talking about its phenomenal The Old Hunters DLC. Straight out the g??ate, players will have to duke it out with Ludwig, a monstrosity who's as large as he is agile. Ludwig knows an array of wildly varied moves, all of them challenging in their own specific wa?y.

At a little below half HP, Ludwig will change to its second form, which is equally challenging and, just as importantly, incredibly fun to play against. Ludwig ranks high in the top most challenging bosses, but would rank even higher in the top best overall bosses in the series. Do not sleep on The Old Hunters.

Sister Friede (Dark Souls 3, Ashes of Ariandel DLC)

Remember the first time you brought a Souls boss' HP down to zero, only to find out it had a more powerful form? Well, Friede does that, and her second form �the one where she enlists the help of her gian??t father, is already a hell of a lot of work. It really does feel like it would be the final form �it already proved challenging enough. Still, more than enough is not enough for FromSoftware.

As soon as players are done with this challenging second phase, they're greeted with yet another form. This time Friede goes from a regular boss to the grim reaper straight out of hell, with a skillset filled with hellish scythe moves that will eviscerate players first, then blow them up. Few bosses are a??s deadly as Friede, and few will ask as much of players to even get to.

Slave Knight Gael (Dark Souls 3, The Ringed City)

When FromSoftware was making The Ringed City DLC, they knew they were making the final piece of the Dark Souls puzzle. Th?ey had to finish it with a bang, and that's what Gael is. This is an incredibly sturdy �I'd say too sturdy, even �knight, and one who possesses all the tricks in the book.

The encounter with Gael starts off simple enough, but everything goes haywire in his second form. Gael's final form feels almost like a multi-enemy fight, or a bullet hell minigame, even. On top of a quick opponent, players will have to deal with a barrage of AOE attacks the likes of which they would only see again coming out of Elden Ring's more godlike enemies. All in all, Gael provides a challenge fitting of Dark Souls' true final boss.

Sword Saint Isshin (Sekiro, Shadows Die Twice)

Most Souls games are at least kind enough to make the toughest boss optional. Sekiro, one of the most difficult games in the famously challenging Souls series, naturally doesn't offer such courtesy. Isshin's many lives will never fail to check if you've mastered the dodge jumping and the parrying that the game had been hammering into you (sometimes literally). Though he proves an extremely complex challenge, in a way, because Sekiro plays very differently from other Souls games, Isshin also feels like a fair? and awesome final enemy.

Commander Gaius (Elden Ring)

This is one of the most understated menaces in gaming. You don't even know you're about to fight Commander Gaius, as there's no fog or anything resembling a boss arena to prepare players for this fight. They just exit a safe zone, enter a regular fie??ld, and �likely when thinking about the next place to go �they get ambushed by this thing. Gaius is fast �fast to the point of making running away from him really hard �and hits both hard and true. Players have to be very mindful of both his and his mount's hitboxes.

Aside from his movement?? speed, nothing seems extremely devious about Gaius, but the highly effective way in which he performs seemingly simple mo??ves will have most players fall before him loads of times.

Fume Knight (Dark Souls 2, the Old Iron King DLC)

Most of Dark Souls 2's many bosses are surprisingly easy in comparison to those of the original game. That, however might be no more than a high-effort ruse to get players to drop their guard before facing off against the Fume Knight. Gamers tend to complain about most bosses in Dark Souls 2 being "just one dude in armor". Well, whe?ther or not that's a good thing, it sure is a true thing, and Fume Knight does ?quite the job of defending the honor of the "dude in armor" kin.

Even though he wields a huge weapon, he's surprisingly fast and scarily relentless. He?? features a wide variety of moves, with all of them listed high on the d??amage output counter. Dealing with the Fume Knight requires a combination of good reflexes and mental fortitude, which makes him not just one of the most challenging but also one of the best encounters in the entire series.

Ornstein & Smough (Dark Souls)

Most boss encounters in the original Dark Souls offer their fair share of challenges by pitting the player up against one vil??e monstrosity, but this one further screws players by having them face tw??o very distinct enemies. Beating both enemies is hard enough as is, and the immense feeling of accomplishment you'll get after pulling it off is immediately ripped out of your hands as you learn there's a second phase. After Ornstein &; Smough, there's no trusting a boss will ever be as simple as it seems.

These two could easily be the poster boys of difficulty in Souls games. Whenever someone mentions how hard these games are, it's hard not to have your mind immediately teleported to that fateful boss arena in Anor Londo, the one where your onl??y friends are the pillars you can use to block their attacks.

Malenia, Blade of Miquella (Elden Ring)

The toughest boss in the Elden Ring base game is what you get when you ask the team behind some of the most challenging games in recent history to come up with an optional challenge ?meant only for the most daring of players.

Malenia is fas?t, deals a lot of damage, and she'll instill players with the need to make every dodge count because she'll heal up whenever she hits the player or any of their summons. Moreover, on top of the second phase that all of these high-level monstrosities now come equipped with, she has the waterfowl dance, easily the most deadly and hardest-to-avoid move in the entire series.

Souls downloadable content is where you tend to find the most difficult bosses. So, if Malenia is the second hardest boss in the series, and she's from a base game, you can only imagine how difficult the hardest boss from that game's DLC is going to be. "Prime" Radahn feels less like one boss, and more like a "greatest hits" of the most devious moves the developers at FromSoft were able to come up with throughout the many years spent perfecting their ?deviousness with the studio.

Radahn is not only relentless, he's one of the very few bosses you just cannot run away from. You can dodge his moves �for as long as your stamina lasts, at least �but you'll have to face his anger at some point. If this article is what finally gets you to challenge Radahn, know that you won't even get to see the monster I'm attempting to describe, as he was originally so strong the devs just had to nerf him, hard.

Sekiro's actual blind playthrough by Mitchriz

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is one of the most challenging games in the already highly difficult Souls series. For Mitchriz, however, it's probably the easiest game in existence, given how he beat it �in two hours, no??? less �without even resorting to one of his five senses.

That's ri?ght, Mitchriz beat the entire game with a blindfold on. He never took it off even once for any sort of between-levels or death reset. This is arguably the most impressive display of pure skill I have ever witnessed in a single-player game.

Elden Ring in less than 4 minutes

Elden Ring isn't just a very challenging game, it's also a tremendously huge one. Hell, even Elden Ring's DLC is longer than most of the games out there. HYP3RSOMNIAC's not too interested in sightseeing, though, as he holds the world record for the fastest Elden Ring speedrun ever. At the core of HYP3R's strategy there's a glitch known as "Zips", which allows extremely skilled players to teleport to the very few actually essent?ial places you need to reach to beat the game.

Watching this as a human being feels like what I imagine a snail in the world of DBZ must've felt when it saw Trunks killing Frieza.

Fun fact: Mitchriz, Sekiro's legendary blind swordsman from above, holds the third place in this category. He was a mere 24 seconds slower than HYP3RSOMNIAC, but that's like an age longer in this specific cat??egory. Think about that.

Beat?ing Radahn without blocking, dodging, or healing flasks

Ok, this is not a speed??run? per se, but most speedruns involve glitching of some sort, so I'm actually living up to the spirit of the event by cheating a bit.

Promise Consort Radahn, aka Prime Radahn, is one of the most challenging bosses in the history of the Souls series. He's hard because even if you block and/or dodge all of his abilities, you might still run too low on stamina to get anything done before he restarts the charge. No biggie, said u/Recjawjind_fmfb, who made a character so goddamn hard it barely even cares about Radahn's moves. This was especially impressive as it took place during Prime Radahn's true prime era, as he ended up getting nerfed afterwards. So yeah, this is one you just cannot replicate??, regardless o?f your skills.

Beating all bosses in one hit

The only thing cooler than killing a boss in one blow is killing the hardest of hard bosses in one blow. That's wh?at player Ainrun did. Above, you can see Ainr??un donning the most lethal equipment and injecting himself with the most experimental and riskiest cocktail of buffs to deal 105k damage and basically pull a One Punch Man on Radahn, the hardest boss in the game. The others stood no chance.

The video above isn't an entire speedrun, but it's certainly the fastest way to defeat Radahn, so there's that. So remember, ??next time you're having trouble with a boss, just consider killing it in one hit.

Malenia on PS5 and PC at the same time... on a dance pad

Many claim Malenia to be the toughest challenge in Souls games history. Beating her is an achievement even if you're a seasoned player. So, Twitch streamer MissMikkaa put it upon herself to beat two Malenias at the same time. You can totally just mod the game to spawn two bosses in the same game, but MissMikkaa thought that wouldn't provide enough of a challenge yet, so she fought one Malenia on her PS5, and another one on her PC—at the same time. Since that still somehow wouldn't prove enough of a challenge for MissMikkaa, the Malenia on PC was defeated through the use of dance �one of the toughest skills for a true gamer to mast??er.

The guy who beat a Dark Souls world record and didn't notice it

Just how naturally in tune with a game do you have to be to perform better at it than anyone before you and just not realize it? That's the story of NaxHPL, who beat the original Dark Souls at just a little over 25 minutes, thought he'd had a crappy run, then only realized he'd broken the world record after the credits had rolled.

2 Players 1 Controller.. and a randomizer

The name "2 Players 1 Controller" is enough to instill uneasy feelings in anyone using the Internet. It's probably because of all the deep-seated resentments we've all created by having to wait for our turn to play with our siblings, I'm ??sure. Still, even without the burden of memory, the idea of sharing one controller's functiona?lities to beat a game in the Souls series is quite a daring one.

Better yet, that wasn't even enough of a challenge for the Puppery and catalystz duo, as they ventured forth into the world of Elden Ring in randomizer mode, which means they could �and did �end up having to f??ight Malenia in places where they'd normally ?have another enemy waiting for them.

Twitch plays (and beats) Dark Souls

You ?think?? two people sharing a controller is tough?

If you've ever been on Twitch and dared to glance at what was going on in the chat, then congrats, you can boast about having survived gazing upon humankind at its most chaotic. Asking such a vicious mob to get organized to beat a game via written commands felt like the cruelest of jokes, but it ended up working out. It only took them 43 days, and a little over 900 deaths, so still a lot better ?than a lot of people ?out there.

Hardly the fastest run, and yet one o??f the most impressive vide?o game accomplishments I've ever witnessed.

Beat??ing Dark Souls w??ith only the power of your voice

The original Dark Souls wasn't originally as good on PC as it was on consoles, as it had some trouble adapting to a controller. No problem, said the heroic bearzly, as he mapped all actions not to buttons or keys, but rather to voice commands. Beating Dark Souls 3 with a single button

Ok, beating Dark Souls with a single button doesn't really seem possible, but it is. What's impossible is beating Dark Souls with only one command. So, what did Rudeism do? He assigned all the different Dark Souls binds to Morse code, then used the one button to input the various commands via different Morse inputs. It sounds completely insane, extremely difficu??lt, and it probably is. Regardless, it's also very fun to watch and tell your friends about it. Understandably, they probably won't even believe you.

There are a lot of Soulslike games that have taken from plenty of From Software's standard-setting works. Games like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order have used the format of the Soulslike and thrown in Metroidvania-styled exploration, while also doubling down on a parry mechanic despite being released before Sekiro.

Still, despite the popularity of Soulslikes, it has not felt like enough games have taken inspiration from Sekiro: Shad??ows Die Twice. Many fans of From Software's games, as well as those who simply appreciate a well-made video game with fleshed-out combat mechanics, ?tend to refer to it as a masterpiece.

So, why a Sekiro-like instead of Soulslike?

It's important to lay out what separates Sekiro from the rest. The game places a special emphasis on its parry mechanic and haste within its combat's pacing. The Dark Souls games, as well as Bloodborne and Elden Ring, will reward players for a well-timed parry. Usually, players get time to breathe and the opportunity to land a high-damage hit, but Sekiro throws in the Posture mechanic.

Posture is the ability to withstand a hit. Properly attacking and parrying damages an enemy's Posture, and fully breaking an enemy's Posture provides the player a chance to pull off a Deathblow. The lower an enemy's health is, the slower their Posture rebuilds. Sekrio did not crea?te the parry, nor did it popularize it, but plenty of gamers look to the game as an example of ??how to do it best.

Before the release of new titles like Stellar Blade and Nine Sols, not many titles took inspiration from Sekiro, even though new Soulslikes continue to pop up. This could be attributed to the fact that games just take a long time to make. It could also take developers even more time to structure an entire game around combat as polished as Sekiro's.

Many gamers just end up going back to Sekiro because it's hard to find a similar experience, but with so many upcoming releases, those seeking to scratch that ??itch may not have to wait much longer.

Games that are definitely Sekiro-likes

Nier: Automata and Bayonetta were the primary comparisons people made to Stellar Blade when they first saw Stellar Blade. Despit?e that, this game features a strong focus on it?s parry mechanic.

It may take Sekiro players some time to adjust to the way that inputs register. Dodging, parrying, and movement have a significantly different weight in Stellar Blade. Still, gamers do agree that the Sekiro influence is there. Stella??r Blade even includes its own spin on Posture, called Balance, though it does differ in areas like its skill trees and additional ways to tune combat to the player's liki?ng.

Nine Sols is different in a couple of ways, namely that it has a hand-drawn 2D art style and features platforming. Regardless, developer Red Candle Games has gone all-in on the Sekrio inspiration.

Nine Sols' combat is based on deflection, with enemies putting enough pressure on the player to force them to consistently deflect. Deflection in Nine Sols allows players to sto??re Chi energy to use in charged attacks instead of?? having a Posture bar to maintain.

Games that focus on parrying

Where Winds Meet is a Wuxia-inspired game that off?ers versatili?ty in weapon choice and combat approach, though countering appears to be central to its gameplay.

In each gameplay showcase so far, trailers have featured its protagonist swiftly parrying an enemy attack. Everstone Studio seems ambitious with the many different features it plans to incorporate into Where Winds Meet. The game will feature a picturesque open world alongside a narrative that is said to be influenced by player choice. Where Winds Meet is slated for a 2024 release.

Then there's Phantom Blade Zero. The combat in this game's original trailer looked too good to be true, and people insisted that it must be scripted in some way. But the more footage fans see of it, the mo?re the game shows its hand.

There are plenty of gaps for player input. Some animations appear to cancel very well into the other, allowing for a wide range of player expression. There is risk, though, as the game seems to force players to commit to their actions. At IGN's hands-on demo, Developer S-Game pushed back a bit against the haste to lump Phantom Blade Zero in with every other Soulsborne. S-Game not?ed a feature on "old-fashio?ned combo-driven traditional action" while using a map design akin to Souls games.

Phantom Blade Zero appears to share plenty in common with Assassin's Creed and Ghost of Tsushima, but this doesn't mean it has nothing in common with Sekiro. In Phantom Blade Zero, players and enemies have a Sha-chi meter, wh?ich functions similarly to Posture and depletes when guarding. Taking consecutive hits breaks this defense and leaves the target wide open. There is a block stance, but pulling off a parry or perfect dodge can reward players with? a counterattack called a Ghoststep.

Games that may continue Sekiro's legacy

Black Myth Wukong has gamers excited for a couple of reasons. Those who like a good story are excited to see a big-budget video game put a spin on the story of Sun Wuko??ng, while others are here for the combat.

The combat system in Black Myth Wukong appears to be somewhat different from Sekiro. The ?game appears to put a heavy emphasis on agility, ?and while it does occasionally show a player blocking an attack, it does not seem nearly as consistent. That being said, there appears to be a similar emphasis on an aggressive play style.

Lastly, there's Ballad of Antara, which gamers are waiting to see more about, but ?one thing seems certain—gua??rding against enemy attacks matters.

Each segment of action shown feels demanding. In the announcement trailer for Ballad of Antara, combat comes off as dynamic and weighty. The game appears to reward aggressive gameplay and consistent guarding. For those searching for something closer to Sekiro than Souls, this game appears to show off more guarding than it does dodg??ing, which could be ??promising.

Some of these games may take even longer than expected to release, and by the time they all come out, they could end up being closer to Dark Souls or something entirely different. No matter what, there appear to be plenty of interestin?g action games in the works.

Co-op and invasions

Sekiro was fine as it was. 

I don't need every single From Software game to offer an expansive co-op and PVP online suite, and the idea of forcing people to play through Sekiro's trials and tribulations alone made it stand out.? You are a lone wolf, after all. Naturally, I'd also be okay with online play eventually making it in.

This mod from LukeYui speeds that process along.

Simply put, the mod adds "unofficial online features to the game." LukeYui says that the PVE experience is "akin to playing Dark Souls with 5000 ping," but "isn't an identical online experience" to the Souls series. The creator says ??they lack the prowess to make it "completely flawless," which makes absolute sense as studios sometimes have entire teams dedicated to that sort of thing. They further clarify th??at the mod is in beta form and runs on P2P (makes sense).

However, after all those provisos, it's actually a pretty fleshed out mod. There's support for six players at once, as well as the option to take on bosses in co-op if you're having issues. Invasions can also happen via matchmaking, keeping you on your toes like a classic Souls experience. You also can't pause with the mod enabled, adding an extra layer of authenticity. You'll find instructions on how to actually create host s??essions and invade/join players here.

I'd say they did great!

But are you up to the challenge of every enemy becoming the final boss?

For months on end, Sekiro ruled my PS4. I poured over it until I had every single last nuance down, then put it on ice for a bit, then picked it back up again. It's kind of like....every From Software game or Zelda: Breath of the Wild in that way.

Mods have made that decision to put it back in the spotlight easier, especially this item and enemy randomizer mod by Thefifthmatt. The mod is perhaps shown off best by YouTuber Gb, who replaces every single enemy with Isshin: the final boss of the game. Isshin happens to be one of the biggest challenges in Sekiro, with multiple forms and a large damage output.

Of course, you don't have to go this hardcore. You can also literally randomize everything to give yourself a fresh ru??n every time.

Although folks started experimenting with Shaggy mods in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice lat?e last year, this? recent video from JustTrevor cleverly mixes together a string of odd mods and creates a sort of story video for the Scooby gang member.

Complete with a cartoon intro, Shaggy is zapped with a laser and transported into the world of Sekiro, ??where he wields a baguette weapon with grace. JustTrevor's vi??deo shows off the serpent sequence (with a swapped Thomas the Tank engine model), a Chained Ogre fight (swapped with Shrek) and a few boss battles (the intro and Shigenori Yamauchi).

For me this is the game that keeps on giving, alongside of pretty much every recent From Software joint and Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It's something I can go back to at any point get comfortable with. Nioh 2 recently joined those ranks!

Shadows sell twice as well

Sekiro has been doing exceptionally well for Activision and FromSoftware. Kadokawa, parent company of FromSoftware, has confirmed that the samurai action title sold?? around 3.8 million copies as of June 30, 2019. That puts it in the range of being one of the most successful new IPs of the current generation.

It's hard not to see why Sekiro has sold that well, either. Whether or not you believe the game is "too difficult," From's previous games have built up a pretty massive cult since Demon's Souls released in 2009. With the prevailing idea that From games are "brutal as hell," people looking for more challenging titles flock to each release to get their masochistic fix. It also doesn't hurt that samurai titles seem to be coming back in vogue, what with Nioh 2 and Ghost of Tsushima still in the pipeline.

This is a ??w?ell-deserved victory for FromSoftware. I'm happy to see the company go from creating niche titles to well respected old-school hits. Whatever the future brings, I hope their pedigree for quality continues.

'Reach for the sky'

Another Sekiro mod has been making the rounds (man PC gaming rules),  and this one is a little less straight-forward than "easy mode" or "boss rush" additions. It's a simple character mo?del re-skin on the surface, but adds so much more depth on a psychological level.

In a very timely release given the recent arrival of Toy Story 4, the mod swaps the main character with none other than Sheriff Woody. The model was ported to the game by modder Huckleberrypie, who used the "Disney Dream Treats" app to get it into the game. Huckleberrypie says their inspiration came from watching Toy Story 4 in thea?ters and "decided to join in on the fun" of mod creation.

They also want t??o make another thing clear: "I am not res?ponsible for any ruined childhoods that may ensue from this mod." Indeed!

I'm thinking it's time to double-dip on PC

From Software's Sekiro is home to some incredible bosses, and I'd go so far as to say the final confrontation should go down as an all-time classic. The journey from my first bewildered playthrough to New Game+ and beyond sure was cathartic. If you put in the time, you'll eventually reach this all-powerful point where you're an unfazed aggressor you're the one dictating the pace, not yo?ur foes.

I had no qualms about playing Sekiro to completion several times in a row, and a big part of that replayability can be attributed to the bosses. Outside of a few pesky areas here and there, most of them are a joy to revisit on subsequent playthroughs. One player a modder who goes by thefifthmatt seems to agree. They've whipped up a boss rush mod to make it easier to orchestrate rematches.

Given the circumstances, it's pretty darn elegant. The ?mod lets you warp to bosses using the Sculptor's Idol at the Dilapidated Temple, and there's even a new reward system with important items and upgrades, like Gourd Seeds, available for sen. "You can get to full healing and prayer beads over the course of a run without the challenge modifiers if you don't lose money on death, but not enough to invest heavily in prosthetics or consumables. With challenge modifiers, you can get everythi??ng."

Graciously, the boss rush mod also streamlines certain aspects of Sekiro that you probably won't care to see again. For instance, you can skip the opening sequence at Ashina Reservoir, and those dreaded recurring tutorial pop-ups are out of the picture. It's also possible to manage all of Wolf's permanent upgrades, Kuro's Charm, and the Bell Demon right from the Dilapid?ated Temple. Convenient!

Even if it's not From Software's usual style, I would've gotten down with an official boss rush. At high levels, Sekiro is breezy enough that it's not too much of a slog to replay the critical path just for t??he chance to fight your favorite bosses again. That said, I appreciate the heck out of this mod.

Shura, why not?

Modders have transplanted countless characters, and while the results are often little more than a chuckle-inducing novelty, sometimes their move just fundamentally works. I don't know how NieR: Automata's 2B would end up on a hard-fought quest sneaking through picturesque Ashina, but in my mind if I don't think too hard about the particulars this mash-up makes a weird sort of sense.

Thanks to Sekiro modder Forsakensilver, you can put Wolf on the bench and play as 2B instead. Before you race to start up this video, a note on spoilers: the first minute and a half are safe, as only the introductory sequence is shown. After that, there's a montage of boss after boss until the game's final fight. I don't want to be the jerk who inadvertently spoiled Sekiro's coolest encounter for you.

With that in mind, dang, this 2B montage makes me want to play Sekiro again, and I say that as someone who's ?lost count of how many times they've beaten it. The new-game-plus loop is too fun!

Now that we're properly pumped to pull off some shinobi deathblows as 2B, here's how to get the NieR: Automata mod running in Sekiro as relayed by Nexus Mods user asasasasasbc:

2B is too strong a character to star in a single game. Automata fans clearly aren't ready to say goodbye, and with four million sales and counting, who knows what the future holds for Yoko Taro and co.
