Twin Perfect has posted some of the most well researched Silent Hill analysis videos on the internet and now they have put their magnifying glass to Konami's much maligned HD collection. If Konami paid close attention to the Silent Hill franchise as much as these guys, reviews for the abysmal Silent Hill HD Collection would read a lot different, including our own.

Reviews hit on things like the lack of fog, frame rate, and other technical hiccups, but these guys manage to find major flaws ?in almost ev??ery aspect of the game. Everything from music to movement is closely analyzed and found to be inferior to the originals, with assets misused or missing entirely.

Maybe this shouldn't be surprising, given that this HD collection comes from code that predates the retail version of Silent Hill 2 and 3. Hearing wind chimes during creepy moments, seeing teeth textures where eyes should be, and the sound of a sword swinging for a walking sound is ju??st beyond bizarre. It's as if Konami purposely wanted to make this collection worse in every way.

To my knowledge, this is the first time a lot of these issu?es -- and I mean A LOT -- have been brought to light. Check out the video and let us know if you spot these or others during your playthrough.

Konami, in an unprecedented example of doing something almost correct, has addressed the minor shitstorm that erupted over its cancellation of a Silent Hill HD Collection patch ??by offering a free game exchange by way of recompense. You need you receipt, of course, but if you have it, you can bag a freebie.

"Please send your receipt to Konami Customer Service for verification and further details on how to exchange your product," notes the official SH Facebook page. "This offer is only valid for Silent Hill HD Collection (Xbox 360 version) games purchased on or before 08.08.2012. All requests must be made in writing and submitted on or before 10.07.2012 and is subject to availability. Any inquiries received after this date will not fall under this exchange program. This offer valid for purc??hases made in North and South America."

While this doesn't alter the fact that new consumers can still buy the broken, unfixed version of Silent Hill HD Collection, it's at least an attempt to make up for releasing a buggy game based on unfinished, ten-year-old code

Now ...?? how many folks kept thei??r receipts this long?

Good news: Silent Hill HD Collection has been patched following reports of frankly grotesque problems with the unfinished code.

Bad news: This patch will only be available to PlayStation 3 customers. If you bought the Xbox 360 version, ??sorry -- yo??u have officially bought a broken game that Konami won't be fixing.

"Plans for an Xbox 360 title update have been cancelled due to technical issues and resources," announced the publisher. "Understanding the issues some users are experiencing, Konami issued a title update for Silent Hill HD Collection (PS3), which fixed frame rate issues as well as audio-synching and other reported issues. Konami apologizes to any players who are continuing to experience these issues on the Xbox 360 sku. Silent Hill HD Collection is available at retail stores nationwid?e."

Konami may be trying to use the same excuse Polytron used with FEZ, but it didn't say exactly what the "resource" problem was. Whatever the justification, the fact of the matter is that a game based on unfinished code will be sold to consumers and they'll just have to deal with the fact that it's been sold, knowingly, as an inferior product.

That's our Konami!

Hey, remember Silent Hill HD Collection? It was released back in March and it was despicably disgraceful. Well, it's now July, so it's as ripe a time as ever to patch the PS3 version and bring it up to a standard that? might be considered acceptable.

The patch improves frame rate, voice syncing, and fog density, as well as missing music. A number of small audio and graphica??l improvements have also been made.

I'm still in awe that Konami took the simplest quick-buck option it had -- an HD re-release of two great Silent Hill games -- and somehow found a way to completely f*ck it up. Even for Konami, it was an amazing mistake. Just ... wow.

Silent Hill series producer Tomm Hulett has finally been able to explain why Silent Hill: HD Collection was such a disappointing mess. It turns out that what we got wasn't ported from the final versions ?of each game. Konami, true to its form as an incompetent barnyward of jokers, lost the source code.

"We got all the source code that Konami had on file -- which it turns out wasn’t the final release version of the games," he told 1UP. "So during debug we didn’t just have to deal with the expected ‘porting’ bugs, but also had to squash some bugs that the original team obviously removed prior to release, but we’d ne?ver seen before.

"A lot of assets such as textures and sound had to be taken out of the compiled game, and that brings with it a host of unique issues, especially taken on top of the tricky coding worka?rounds at play in the original games. We certainly ha??d our hands full. I think at one point Heather was blue."

With everything else Konami has done, this makes total sense. It makes sense that it would lose code, and still have the nerve to release an inferior HD Collection for two of its most&n??bsp;prestigious titles. Just another day in the life for the Inspector Clouseau of videogame publishers.

Konami has announced today that patches are in the works for both Silent Hill Downpour and Silent Hill HD Collection. It will address a number of iss??ues found in both games.

"Understanding the issues some users are experiencing, development teams are currently creating online patches for both games, which will fix the frame rate issues, the audio-synching in Silent Hill HD Collection, and the Auto-Save issues in Silent Hill Downpour," stated the publisher. "Players have voiced their c?oncerns, and solutions to these issues will be fixed and launched in the coming weeks."

I didn't have much of an issue with Downpour, though the problems with HD Collection are well documented. I remain skeptical that a patch will drag that little ?bundle of sin up to?? par, but we can only wait and see.

It's been tough as a Silent Hill fan, watching Konami poison what once was the reigning champion of the survival horror genre. Even if you enjoy some of the sequels and spin-offs that have been produced over the years, there's no denying that the credibility and prestige of the series is all b?ut dried up.

We still have Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3, though. Two of the greatest videogames ever made, and the finest pair of horror classics you could hope to play. There's absolutely no way Konami could mess up the simple task o?f compiling these two fine titles into an HD collection, right?

That's what I used to think, anyway.

Silent Hill HD Collection (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 [reviewed])
Developer: Team Silent, Hijinx Studios
Publisher: Konami
Release: March 20, 2012
MSRP: $39.99

First of all, Konami must be brought to task for naming this "Silent Hill HD Collection," as it implies a reflective body of work representing the series' past. As seems to be common with these reissues, the original game that started it all is nowhere to be found. Given its availability as a standalone PSN download, it's almost understandable that it would be left off the disc, but what cannot be overlooked is the complete lack of Silent Hill 4: The Room.

Even if this disc was supposed to reflect just the PlayStation 2 games, the "collection" is incomplete without the fourth entry. It doesn't matter if you liked that game or not -- Konami made Team Silent rope it into the Silent Hill universe, and it seems ironic that the publisher would deny its existence ??now. Not to mention, the title ha?s its fans and, for all its flaws, deserves a place on the disc.

Still, one can almost see why it was left off. After all, Hijinx Studios wasn't competent enough to correctly port two games, let alone possess the capability t??o handle thre?e.

Frankly, a disgustingly terrible job has been done with this package. Silent Hill 2 is especially bad, as the visual "upgrade" actually looks worse than its PlayStation 2 counterpart.?? The game's contrast has been altered to make everything unnecessarily darker, while its claustrophobic fog effects have been removed almost entirely. Not only does this diminish the atmosphere, it exposes a number of graphical errors that the effect existed to hide.

It's common knowledge that the fog of the first Silent Hill was an ingenious response to the technical limitations of the era. Team Silent couldn't render a huge town in an expansive world, so it enshrouded everything in an obscuring haze to cover up what couldn't be rendered. Though not so necessary on the PS2, it did mean the developers wouldn't have to create environments with significant draw distances. Without that fog, one can see where parts of the game world ha?ve not been finished and were left to end in nothingness. This is especially notable during moments near Toluca Lake, where the water can be seen abru??ptly ending, as if it flowed off the edge of the world. The boat sequence toward the end of the game looks absolutely horrific, not just for the previously stated reason but also for the lack of water texture as well as the guiding light in the distance that now looks like a star drawn in a child's cartoon.

Silent Hill 3 looks far better, to be fair. The sequel was already less reliant on fog and significantly better looking than its predecessor, so this appears to have been an easier port job. The game's deeper color scheme, with its focus on black and red, looks especially good in HD, and I'm glad that at least one game on the disc isn't visually inferior to its decade-old counterpart, though problems have been noted with lacking shadows. I can't persona??lly say I found the game quite so bad to look at.

Nevertheless, sound issues permeate both games. In Silent Hill 2, the audio randomly skips in outdoors environments, and both games struggle to keep the sound consistent whenever a character uses a bladed weapon -- the Great Knife in Silent Hill 2 and the katana in Silent Hill 3. While the Great Knife is only useful for one boss fight, the katana is an all-but-essential part of Silent Hill 3's melee arsenal, and to have audio cutting out almost every time it hits something is unbelievable. In both games, there's a bizarre crackling that randomly occurs on the save screen, sound loops during sections where it shouldn't be (ruining one of my favorite jump scares in Silent Hill 2), and unlocking achievements has the nasty side effect of crippling the frame rate of cutscene??s to the?? point where I've had to skip them.

Underneath the pathetic mess, these two games are still the shining examples of survival horror they always were. Silent Hill 2 remains my favorite game of all time, with its disturbed characters, gripping story, psychological symbolism and legitimately distressing environments. Silent Hill 3 is still an intense, stressful, ghost train of mind screws. While Silent Hill 2 is my favorite, Silent Hill 3 is the better videogame, and some of its grisly "Otherworld" environments remain the scariest, most downright sickening dig??ital locations I've had the sweet misfortune of visiting.

Naturally, both titles have aged. The loose combat system and sometimes excruciatingly slow place are things modern videogames would struggle to get away with. The controls are as dodgy as ever, even when switching over to the criminally underutilized "2D controls" that simulate modern analog movement, and the menu system is needlessly fiddly. Nevertheless, I can still play and adore these games today and remain? thoroughly absorbed in a pair of gorgeously grotesque titles, the likes of which have not been seen before or since.

In a seeming bid to sidestep awkward situations with previous voice actors, both games feature new voices. Silent Hill 2 has an ?option to switch to the old ones -- included as a result of fan outpouring -- and the traditionalist in me prefers them. I feel the new actors significantly alter the tone of each conversation and have a tendency to overact and draw out their lines. Eddie's new voice, especially, has lost its sense of growing agitation and instead settles on an annoyingly breathy beach bum impersonation.

Silent Hill 3 has no option to use original voices, which is a mixed bag. The supporting cast has all been given significantly better actors this time around, with Douglas' no longer sounding like Louis Armstrong, Claudia's losing her shrill whine, and Vincent's having some actual strength in his voice. Main protagonist Heather, however, has lost a lot of the natural energy and personality that made her such a fan favorite character. In the original game, Heather actually sounded like a teenage girl in a nightmarish situation. The new voice sounds more like someone trying really hard to do an impression of a teenage girl, and the insincerity is clear as day. I??t's not terrible acting, exactly, but it takes away a huge amount of Heather's authentic personality, which in turn undoes a lot of the story's emotional impact.

One horrible side effect of the added audio is that the new actors struggle to match the lip movements of the characters, and as such, vocals sometimes end up horribly out of sync with the visuals. There are also times?? when some words have been altered or skipped entirely, the importance of which will depend on how much of a purist you are. Sp??ecifically, two lines have been rewritten while other words have been left out of certain sentences. Because nobody bothered to alter the subtitles, all the changes are as clear as day.

With Silent Hill HD Collection, I was hoping to spend my review waxing nostalgic about two of my favorite games of all time. I would have loved to talk about how James Sunderland is such a breathtaking protagonist. I would have loved to mention the perverse body horror that snakes its way throughout Silent Hill 3's eldritch world. So much about these games holds up today, and even playing them on this collection, so much genuine brilliance to shine through to remind t??he world how horror games used to look in their glory days.

Instead, I've had to spend the review talking about what a dreadfully sloppy job has been done with the porting. No matter how engaging these games still are to play, there's no escaping the fact that the games on this disc are significantly inferior versions, and for Konami to fail at publishing enhanced versions of such old games is a total embarrassment. While newcomers won't notice the missing visual elements, such broken audio is tough for anybody to forgive, while old school fans will be left feeling insulted by what a significant downgrade the "HD" version of Silent Hill 2 is.

Konami has long had a habit of mishandling its properties, buts the inability to treat even these classics on the Silent Hill HD Collection with a modicum of respect is staggering. The disc feels like a rushed and sloppy cash?-in, squirted out to exploit fans who have stuck with the series through years of drivel. It does a disservice to two amazing pieces of interactive art and spits on the legacy of what once was the crown jewel of an entire genre.

Incomplete, glitchy, and visually degraded, Silent Hill HD Collection is Konami's greatest insult to the series.

Silent Hill HD Collection has left fans highly unsatisfied, riddled as it is with bugs and shoddy visual updates. One man in particular seems to have a low opinion of the graphical "improvements" to the games, and his opinion is worth noting -- he's Masahiro Ito, the art director for the first three Silent Hill games.

Ito was shown some compariso??n shots of the old and new games on Twitter, and he was pretty unimpressed. You can see the screens in the attached gallery, where the notable lack of fog reveals unfinished portions of the environment.

"Left side is HD, isn't it? It's poor," he stated. "... It's really a released version? Really?"

When informed that the screenshot was indeed from the final retail copy, his reaction was pretty self-explanatory. He simply exclaimed, "OMG!!!!" He would then go on t??o say that Konami did not have to release a version in that condition, further expressing his surprise at the port job.

I beat Silent Hill 2 last night and had more audio flubs, not to mention the graphics during the boat ride sequence are borderline disgusting. I've only just started Silent Hill 3, and I'm dreading what I might find. What truly sucks is that the games themselves are sti??ll utterly wonderful experiences. Konami just totally dropped the ball, as it seems to have been doing consistently for the pas?t few years.

[Thanks, Levit0!]

Is it possible to screw up such a guaranteed success as an HD version of Silent Hill 2 and 3? If any company's capa??ble, it's Konami. The publisher just seems to be getting more and more senile, and this latest endeavor is beyond belief.

The Silent Hill HD Collection, which released this past week, has been surrounded by a whirlwind of negative criticism from fans reporti??ng all manner of bugs. Sound sync problems, crackling audio, stuttering framerates, and missing textures, it seems this ??release is running the gamut of shoddy port problems.

I received my review copy yesterday, and I can confirm I've run into issues. I've had audio cutting in and out, and there was a cutscene I had to skip because unlocking an achievement caused it to run at a single frame every few seconds. A thread on NeoGAF details an embarrassing number of problems that users have encountered. All told, Konami cut some unforgivabl??e corners with this.

Interestingly, some claim the improved graphics have actually diminished the atmosphere of the games. Previousl??y dark, claustrophobic areas are now crisp and clear, while the fog effect has a distinct line cutting across it and is no longer able to obscure portions of the map that were not finished.

I'm only partway through Silent Hill 2 so far and nothing's truly broken my experience. I'm hearing SH3 got hit the worst though, so I'm not holding my breath. A patch has been issued for the PS3, but some claim it's done nothing.?? Even if it did fix something, the idea of a day one?? patch for a decade-old game should humiliate any publisher with a sense of dignity.

As if I needed any further evidence that Konami has thoroughly lost its mind. It can't even do Silent Hill 2 right anymore.

Release dates for this year's trio of Silent Hill gam?es have been all over the place, but Konami sent alon??g a note that clears everything up and seals the dates in stone ... unless they change again. If you're confused over which games are arriving on what days, worry not and check out these dates.

  • Silent Hill Downpour: March 13
  • Silent Hill HD Collection: March 20
  • Silent Hill: Book of Memories: March 27

Konami is calling this the "month of madness," but I don't think it quite understands the irony of such a catchy phrase. After all, releasing three games in a series within the span of an already-packed month certainly is madness, and not in the creepy, guilt-r?idden, that-monster-represents-my-sexual-repression sense. It's just ??common garden insanity.

I sometimes think Konami doesn't realize there are other videogame publishers in the world and th?at this is an actual industry, not just one company's personal hobby.

Silent Hill HD Collection was slated to appear on shelves next week, but Konami has wisely decided to push it back a few weeks. The repackaged duo of Silent Hill 2 and 3 will instead be a?vailable in North America on March 20.

Konami has announced release dates for all three Silent Hill games due out this year. The Silent Hill HD Collection is due March 6, Silent Hill: Downpour is slated for March 13 and Silent Hill: Book of Memories is comin??g March 27. Looks like March is going to be the scariest month of the year! Ooooh!

I'm still holding out hope for Downpour. I didn't like what I played at E3, but I am willing to chalk it up to a bad demo. Book of Memories hasn't impressed anybody so far, with its weird focus on top-down multiplayer. For me, the most promising title is the HD Collection, only because I already know the games are good.

That's kind of sad. All I want is for th?is series to ??be brilliant again.

In any cas??e, Konami released new ?screens for this game but its press site is a mess. I just uploaded a bunch of images and you can look at them if you want.

Following retailers updating their online listings for Silent Hill HD Collection to reflect a March 6 release date, Konami has confirmed with Joystiq that the game has been delayed to next month. "We will be sending out definitive dates on all three Silent Hill games later this week," the company responded.

It could just be my imagination, but it seems like these high-def re-releases are particularly prone to getting pushed back. At least we generally know what's in store; waiting slightly longer to play something familiar isn't quite as painf??ul.

We were kind of worried about the new voice acting recorded for the upcoming Silent Hill HD Collection. It might have been fine, but it could have gone very wrong. Thankfully, Konami has announced that there will be an original voice option for Silent Hill 2 in the HD collection. A Facebook post from Konam??i says that the instrumental voice cast was instrumental in making this happen.

Yes. A double yes for that cover art.

Unfortunately, "due to factors both technical and logistical," Silent Hill 3 will only have new voices in the collection.

No.

Well, I'll take what I can get. I'm now excited to get back into on??????????????????????????e of my fav??orite games of all time, now with the original audio.

Are you feeling better about this collection now?

Monica Taylor Horgan, the voice behind Mary and Maria in the original Silent Hill 2, has joined the discussion about the controversial new vocal cast, and has confirmed that she's prepared to deal with ??Konami on adding the old voices as an opt??ion.

Much of the discussion has revolved around the lack of royalties, with James Sunderland actor Guy Cihi accusing Konami of using a new cast to avoid paying him. By contrast, Monica states that she doesn't expect any royalties, b??ecause that's how the videogame industry works. She's happy with the original payment, and willing t?o have her voice used again.

"I would LOVE to have the old voices on SH2 as an option for fans," she confirmed via Facebook. "I will be at Konami to sign off on this as a reality tomorrow. My experience with them thus far has been totally relaxed, pleasant and light-hearted. And I am sure if I suggested "pizza and beer" they would be game for that too. I realize I am just one voice: but It was my und??erstandin?g that this is what the fans would like so let's make it happen!"

The origin?al voice acting wasn't the best, but I think the new stuff's even wors??e so I'd love for an option to use the original cast. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that some deals can be made.

Guys I loathe to chime in on all this business but in the interest in keeping the fragile progress we have made I would like to. It is my belief that the GOAL here is to get you guys the original voices on the game that you love. I wanted more information at the onset of all this and I went out and got it...from professionals who understand the talent business. At the time the game was made and released, I was considered a "professional" actor. I was on TV, on the radio, in games (many) and I had done? work in the US and abroad (namely Japan). My voice has been used hundreds and hundreds of times. Here is what I DO know about royalties and residuals. Not once have I ever been paid any residuals for video games (or any voice work for that matter).

And since the new HD game is now Konami US property, it is important to realize how it works in the US. I now live in LA and I have spoken (due to all this "controversy") with 2 BIG agents (who specialize in video games) and the bottom line is that GAMES do NOT receive r??esiduals. To quote a VIDEO GAME TALENT REP (agent): "IT IS NOT DONE." Even famous, big-name Hollywood actors are paid once--no "back-end" deals. That aside, and to lend credit to claims that residuals have been earned for some people; Japan is like "The Old West" and deals can be made between agents, talent and companies that are off the grid and often are. Pay scales were radically different for different talent, there is NO UNION in Japan for VAs (called narrators there). If you had a smart, fast-thinking agent, you could have been paid more, or o?ver time potentially. NO ONE knew SH2 would go on to its success.

It is SO common to have something get big and th?en have all this squabbling about credit, compensation, motives, etc. But PLEASE...this whole business about discussing getting paid is putting a SERIOUSLY bad taste in my mouth.

Here it is folks: I would LOVE t?o have the old voices on SH2 as an option for fans. I will be at Konami to sign off on this as a reality tomorrow. My experience with them thus far has been totally relaxed, pleasant and light-hearted. And I am sure if I suggested "pizza and beer" they would be game for that too. I realize I am just one voice: but It was my understanding that this is what the fans would like so let's make it happen!

[Thanks, de5gravity]

I've made no secret of what I think about the voice acting in Silent Hill HD Collection. While I'm normally one to defend design decisions, I can't find a way to support voice acting that somehow manages to sink below the low standards of the original.

Luckily, your old pal Jim Ster?ling is here to save the day. I've decided to offer my abundant vocal talent??s to Konami, absolutely free of charge, and single-handedly improved the HD remasters. Watch the video and drown in my superiority.

Konami has posted a video for the Silent Hill HD Collection, revealing (with some justified nervousness from the announcer) the brand new voice acting in the game. You'd think Konami would take the time to hire some professionals and do a really good job, but ?no ... the voice acting is utterly awful.

Don't get me wrong, the original actors were not the best, but is Konami serious here? Why change the actors if you're going to make them worse instead of better? By far, Eddie is the absolute bottom of the pile -- listening to this new guy mutilate his lines makes me want to prize my teeth out?? with a rusty crowbar.

Just ... wow, Konami. Good job!

Although announced as a PS3 exclusive, Konami has revealed that the Silent Hill HD Collection will, in fact, be coming to the Xbox 360 as well. The game collects Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3 together, irritatingly skipping The Room

It'll also feature new voice acting to go along with the HD graphics, somet?hing I'm still rather unsettled about.

Silent Hill HD Collection is due out before the end of the year.

Seriously, this isn't really much to go on, but then, I guess you all know what Silent Hill 2 looks like by now. Here it? is again, but with more DEFINITIONS! That's exciting for you all, isn't it?&nbs?p;

Great!
