10. God of War

God of War is one of the PS2's most iconic games, and for good reason. It features outstanding character action as you whip your enemies with the Chains of Olympus and take them down in grisly detail. The storyline is epic, the visuals are st??ill cinematic to this day, and you'll love the intense boss battles from this game. Kratos might be one-note in this PS2 interpr??etation when compared to the reboot-quel PS4 series, but it's still fun to take down the Greek gods one by one. What brings it down a bit are the annoying puzzles that spoil the game's pace.

9. Beyond Good & Evil

One of the most underrated games on the PS2 (and also one of the best) is Beyond Good & Evil. It features a riveting story that has you uncovering a sci-fi conspiracy. You're taking pictures for the IRIS Network, revealing details about a corrupt organization that is taking prisoners. It's set up in a Zelda-like way, where you solve puzzl?es, take down bosses, and try to get th??rough each "dungeon" alive. It also has an open world to explore with plenty of secrets to find. There are lots of animals to take pictures of to get money and other rewards.

"The game manages to draw one in and keep the player involved with a charming game world and a strong, atypical female protagonist," said our review of the 2011 HD version.

8. Sly Cooper & The Thievius Racooonus

After playing this game very recently on the PS5, thanks to PlayStation Plus Premium, Sly Cooper & The Thievius Racoonus holds up exceptionally well. The art style looks stunning on screen as it has comic book-like visuals. It's fun to clobber enemies with Sly's cane and stealthily move across each level with the abilities this raccoon gets from his ancestors. The developer Sucker Punch Productions (inFAMOUS, Ghost of Tsushima) continues to throw in twists to the gameplay to keep Sly's adventure fresh from begin??ning to end. Check ?this game out now for a unique 3D platformer that takes place around the world.

7. Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy

From one platforming hero to another, Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy is by far the best of this Naughty Dog-developed trilogy. It features bright, bold visuals, with plenty of entertaining platforming challenges across the game's world. The biomes are varied and present engaging game designs. Additionally, Daxter is a successful comedic relief for the game as he tries to shake Jak back alive after he is taken down by his enemies. The Precursor Legacy also controls greatly as Jak rolls and jumps his way to each platform. It ??is an impressive visual spectacle for the PS2 and should be praised.

6. Ratchet & Clank 3: Up Your Arsenal

Arguably the best of the three platforming mascots from the PS2 era is Ratchet with his best pal Clank. I challenge you to find a PS2 game funnier than Ratchet & Clank 3: Up Your Arsenal. It has the hilarious antagonist Dr. Nefarious alongside his straight-person sidekick Lawrence with funny banter and well-timed slapstick. You also get Courtney Gears, a funny albeit dated reference to Britney Spears. Ratchet & Clank are also fantastic as the protagonists of the game with quips of the??ir own.

Up Your Arsenal features all kinds of weapons at the Lombax's disposal. You have the electrifying Shock Blaster, the powerful Plasma Whip, and the Qwack-O-Ray, which turns your enemies into explosive ducks. The developer Insomniac Games is so creative with its weapons, and the platforming is also varied al?l the way thro?ugh with fun segments like using the gravity boots and riding grind rails with Ratchet's footwear.

5. Resident Evil 4

While Resident Evil 4 hasn't aged the best when compared to other games on this list, you can't deny its importance in the industry. It revolutionized the third-person shooter genre with great controls (at the time), powerf??ul guns, ??and exhilarating blockbuster moments that kept us glued to the screens.

It also brought in an era of quick-time events, which began a cinematic era in gaming, for better or for worse. This C????????????????????????????apcom game delivers a successfully creepy atmosphere with its dark European aesthetic. The storyline is also effective as you try to save the President's daughter, who has been kidnapped by this scary cult.

"The game proves that sometimes all you need is a simple gameplay hook, as well as the bravery to stick with it, in order to drive home a compelling experience," said our review of this game's HD version in 2011.

4. Kingdom Hearts 2

Square Enix delivered one of the best PS2 games in 2005 when Kingdom Hearts 2 launched that December in Japan. It has an engaging narrative with fascinating original characters to meet, in addition to Final Fantasy and Disney heroes along the way. In addition, the combat is stellar and still has the best action? RPG system to date. The reaction command mechanic has you dynamically react to enemy attacks, and the combat options available to the player, such as abilities, magic, drive forms, summons, and more, are immense.

The boss battles are also epic as you confront the powerful Organization XIII, heartless, and nobodies that stand in your way. I'll never forget pressing triangle and cross as fast as I can to block Xemnas' constant barrage of lasers toward Sora and Riku. The scale of each world is incredible too, especially when you consider it was developed for the PS2. The World That Never Was features a massive castle that you need to work your way up to stop Xemnas' plans. The attention to detail in each Disney world is also immaculate. Mulan's visual art style with the smoke and fire is replicated to perfection, and Beast's Castle looks as impressive as it does in the movie Beauty & The Beast.

3. Persona 4

The Persona series is well-renowned, and for good reason. After you finish each entry, you'll feel like you're saying goodbye to your friends with a tearful smile, and that's the same with Persona 4. Each character is well-rounded with likable traits and weaknesses that ??they show throughout the deep storyline. You'll also get to know them through your social links, and as you increase your ?bond with them, your abilities grow.

The combat revolves around collecting different monsters called Shadows and using their abilities in battle. You can even fuse them to create stronger creatures for your moveset. It's a fantastic game loop and will keep you playing for many, many hours. We gave the Golden version on Vita a 10/10 rating in our review. "The summoning system of the Persona games has been likened to Pokemon’s mons??ter collecting and, while they’re similar in the collection aspect, I feel Atlusâ€?work is quite a bit deeper in scope, and certainly more adult?," it said. "For being engrossing they’re on the same level."

2. Shadow of the Colossus

Shadow of the Colossus is an artistic masterpiece that every gamer should get the chance to play. With incredible visuals and stunning music, you play as Wonder on an incredible journey to save his love. To do that, you have to take down these gigantic creatures fittingly called colossi. The game features a protagonist that isn't perfect. He is slim, stumbles around, and can fall down easily. It sounds frustrating at first, b??ut part of the charm is that you're playing as this weaker man fighting against these terrifying beasts. He isn't Kratos, he's relatable.

The colossi themselves are levels as you're trying to find a way to scale up them and strike your sword into their weak spot. When the puzzle of how to climb a colossus is solved, you get a rush of satisfaction as the magnificent track "The Opened Way" blasts out loud in glee. Everything in this game comes together in a beautiful package, and it's one of PlayStation's best games ever.

1. Final Fantasy X

One game triumphs over the mighty colossi, and that's Final Fantasy X, arguably Square Enix's magnum opus. Final Fantasy X tells a stellar story. As a fish out of water, the main protagonist Tidus experiences a new world 1,000 years into the future. The characters he meets along the way have interesting personalities that change the trajectory of the narrative significantly. They all have their own roles to play in the party. You'll get invested in every character, especially Yuna and Tidus, who share a touching romantic story across the game's lengthy campaign. The voice performances are also impressive, especially if you consider this is the first mainline game in the Final Fantasy series to feature voice acting.

I cried multiple times when I played this as a kid and aft??er playing through the game five or so years ago, I had the same reaction. What helps add to the drama and emotion of the narrative is the impeccable soundtrack by Nobuo Uematsu, who delivers his best work with themes like "To Zanarkand" and "Movement in Green."

Spira takes your breath away

What is just as memorable is the sights of Spira, the land where Final Fantasy X takes place. The designs of the temples, the gorgeous scenery of Besaid, and the grand cities of these islands stick in my mind decades after playing Final Fantasy X for the first time.

Additionally, the turn-based combat system is one of the best the legendary Final Fantasy series has to offer. You can switch our party?? members for strategic depth, interact with objects during the battle in a puzzle-like fash??ion against bosses, use special abilities, and utilize the mega-customizable Sphere Grid that lets you progress your characters in your own way.

"Its story, which follows summoner Yuna on her journey across the world of Spira to fight Sin, is one of Square Enix’s best," said our review of the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD remaster. "Likable characters with memorable o??utfits, a fantastic musical score, and a powerful ending made this game one of the best role-pl??aying games of the PS2 era."

Hermen Hulst, one of PlayStation's joint CEOs, recently sat down to talk with Famitsu in order to talk abo??ut the brand's recent 30th Anniversary and, most important of all, to discuss its future. In this interview, he revealed something fascinating and promising about some classic PlayStation IPs.

At one point (which @realradec translated into English) Famitsu asked Hulst about all the classic PlayStation characters that appeared as fun little cameos in Astro Bot, which prompted many fans to ask Sony for a proper revival of franchises like Ape Escape, Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper and more. Hulst replied by saying, "Our extensive IP portfolio is an important asset for PlayStation, and as part of our efforts?? to strengthen our portfolio, we continually explore opportunities to leverage our legacy IP as well as develop new franchises."

This is a particularly interesting and optimistic answer since numerous people have accused PlayStation of leaving most of its classic franchises behind. However, Astro Bot did an effective job at both reminding players about these legacy IPs and inspiring them to ask the company for new entries in all these series. There's literally an entire level-themed after Ape Escape in Astro Bot??, s??o why can't Sony greenlight the development of an entire new game in that style?

Fortunately for PlayStation fans, the future ahead of them is quite bright because Astro Bot was a critical and commercial success, to the point that ?it even won the Game of the Year award. This may inspire Sony to keep making new cartoony 3D mascot platformers, so franchises like Ape Escape, Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper, MediEvil and more may make a comeback very soon.

But of course, the PlayStation brand is not just about the first party games and franchises the company produces firsthand, since it has also established close relationships with many other studios and publishers in order to make their games exclusive to PS4 and/or PS5. In another part of the interview, Famitsu asked Hulst about Team Ninja's Rise of the Ronin and Shift Up's Stellar Blade, two great third-party PS5 exclusives that cam??e out in 2024.

Hulst told Famitsu that creativity and great games come from everywhere, and while the company is always looking to develop content within PlayStation Studios, it also collaborates with external studios. "It's important to have a wide variety o??f games in our portfolio that can be enjoyed by all types of players. To provide fresh joy and experiences to PlayStation players, we are constantly reviewing the contents of our portfolio and considering expanding the genres that are in demand and introducing new types of games. Our aim is to publish games from the world's best creators," said Hulst.

This means that we can definitely expect more third-party PS5 exclusives in the near future. Some Reddit users disapproved of Hulst's answer, calling the idea of timed exclusives like Stellar Blade or Final Fantasy XVI an "anti-consumer practice." However, Sony has been quite open to publishing games that are not 100% exclusive in the past few years (Like Helldivers 2, which Hulst mentioned in the Famitsu interview because it launched on PC as well), not to mention that it helped studios like Shift Up with the development of games like Stellar Blade. It seems PlayStati??on actually wants to help them make bigger and better games instead of simply paying for some easy-timed exclusives.

Ape Escape

The first Ape Escape was revo?lutionary at the time as it utilized dual analog sticks in a revolutionary manner. In this game, you're catching monkeys with a net, and you're like a younger James Bond with all sorts of gadgets at your disposal. Spinning the right analog stick, you can net monkeys, spin a hula-hoop to gain speed, and use radar. The level design still holds up today.

Spyro: Year of the Dragon

The final Insomniac Games-developed Spyro, Year of the Dragon, is a masterclass of 3D platforming design. Gliding through the air as the tiny purple dragon is thrilling, and the level design still holds up to this day. Some cool missions had you play as different characters, each with their own abilities to offer. Year of the Dragon mixes the gameplay formula enough to keep it fresh throughout its storyline. Shoutout to the fun skateboarding levels by the? way! I loved those as a?? kid.

Crash Bandicoot

This one might be the hardest of the trilogy, but it stands out the most. It has memorable levels and bosses that stick in my mind to this day. I played this with the N'Sane Trilogy for the first time (I was more of a Spyro kid) and loved the hard platforming and whacky art design that truly stands out among Crash's contemporaries like Mario and Sonic. This game also changed up the platforming genre with its out-of-the-b?ox hallway ??design that had Crash facing the camera during pivotal moments.

Wipeout

One of the best PlayStation games has us flying through a race course in futuristic vehicles. It's basically PlayStation's answer to the Mario Kart series. The racing's intense, there are weapons at your disposal, and the controls feel fluid. I remember crashing my vehicle into the walls, but if you really master the movement, Wipeout's a thrill.

Ico

Ico is a special PS2 game that was way ahead of its time. It tells a riveting narrative with barely any speech as the environmental storytelling is spot on. The puzzles are well-designed, and the animations are great for this era. While escort missions are usually a huge turn-off in the gaming industry, Ico manages to make this mechanic thoroughly engaging and dramatic. "Puzzle-platforming, dragging a girl around and wimpy stick combat together sounds tedious, but it works really well, and we have Team Ico’s beautifully paced and designed levels to thank for that," said our review of the PS3 remaster.

Shadow of the Colossus

The same developer, Team ICO, also made Shadow of the Colossus, ??a magnum opus, which has received a PS4 remake since its PS2 launch. That's arguably the best way to play it. Shadow of the Colossus has you take on a bunch of bosses that act as brilliant platforming challenges in and of themselves. You're exploring a dark, empty landscape that's cursed and has been subject to time. You're defeating these bosses to save your character's love, and once again, without a word spoken, there's drama and eerieness in your protag?onist's adventure. This is a masterpiece that must be played due to its story, incredible art, and sensational soundtrack to match with its groundbreaking gameplay.

Sly Cooper & The Thievius Raccoonus

This is a recent game I've been able ??to play, thanks to PlayStation Plus, and I wish I played it sooner. As a sneaky thief, you're stealthily platforming through imaginative levels. Developed by Sucker Punch, this game has aged well with its cel-shaded art style and engaging animation. While the bosses do seem a bit half-baked at times, each level is packed with entertaining challenges and enemy designs. I hope to play the next two in the trilogy with PlayStation Plus Premium, but Sony's sure taking its time to release them as of the time of writing.

Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy

The original Jak & Daxter is one of the best 3D platformers PlayStation has ever released. It's filled with charm, the script is funny, and the platforming still holds up to this day. Rather than the dark, depressing levels of the latter ti?tles in the series with tacked-on gunplay, you get bright, colourful stages that test your platforming skills. It also ha?s some fun vehicle segments as you go through the game's delightful story.

Killzone 3

While the Killzone series has been long absent, the third entry still holds clout amongst fans. The campaign has blockbuster moments, the gunplay is heavy but makes you feel powerful, and the overall sci-fi lo??ok is gritty b??ut stunning. The multiplayer, although taken down, was unique at the time as it played elements of the match in cinematic sequences, depending on how the objective was won or lost. It complimented the campaign well. Additionally, the PlayStation Move is utilized excellently within this FPS.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

One of the best PlayStation games that attracted many to the PS3 platform is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. From having an intense level on top of a moving train to zipping through a Nepalese city, the stakes and the Hollywood action were unmatched at the time. Nolan North's performance as Nathan Drake is phenomenal, with the best one-liners and emotional performances from the actor. The weapons feel great to control, and the action is top-notch, but the developer, Naughty Dog, knew how to calm down the action with engaging puzzles along the way. I hope an Uncharted revival is?? around the corner, either in the form of a sequ??el or a remake.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

This entry is likely con??troversial for many, but it truly is an outstanding fighting game that suffered through many hardships. Despite Nintendo fans crying, "It's a Smash clone!" and the terrible online play, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, at its core, is a thrilling platform fighter that deserves more acclaim. Linking combos into supers feels super satisfying, a??nd the way the characters use moves from their original games is cool.

The stages also mashed two different games together, sometimes in unexpected ways. For example, you're fighting in Ratchet & Clank's Metropolis while a hydra from God of War attacks Qwark. It was a creative way of integrating more PlayStation representation. It deserved more of a sho??t, and PlayStation should think about returning to this idea with its new games-as-a-service model.

LittleBigPlanet

LittleBigPlanet is part of the Play, Create, Share era of PlayStation. This game has a surprising amount of creative tools available to players to make their own levels and share them around the world. It was impressive what some creators made, and in some cases, the developer Media Molecule hired them for jobs at the studio. Sackboy is the adorable icon of the series, and it was cute to see him run through these creative levels in all manner of outfi?ts.

"LittleBigPlanet‘s amazing level creation tools and? the enormous amou??nt of quality online user-created content [..] come together to offer a separate (and superior) experience: a genuine 10.0 purchase," said our 2008 review. However, the reviewer found the offline content lacking.

Modnation Racers is an awesome kart racer

Modnation Racers

One of PlayStation's most under-appreciated games is Modnation Racers. The gameplay feels arguably better than Mario Kart, and the creation tools at your disposal are incredible. You could create your own tracks with all manner of obstacles, make c??haracters (and base them off popular pop culture icons if you wanted to), or form your own kart with its custom designs. All of this was complimented by a fantastic online system, which lets you share your own creations and race with them online with other players. I miss this game, as it's now offline.

inFAMOUS 2

Cole McGrath's story wrapped up in inFAMOUS 2, and it was a fantastic resolution. The town of New Marais, inspired by New Orleans, is exciting to explore, and Cole's new powers upped the ante. The graphics and art design were significantly improved over the rather generic original adv?enture, and the story features some intense narrative options that change the world around Cole. Unfortunately, this game is stuck on the PS3 and hasn't received a remaster of any kind, which is a huge shame.

The Last of Us Part 1 Ellie

The Last of Us Part 1

Cinematic storytelling within games is a trend that really hit its high point with The Last of Us. This post-apocalyptic story tugs at the heartstrings of players as Joel and Ellie travel across the United States to help the Fireflies. It does a great job of building a kinship in the pseudo-father-daughter relationship and has us invested in what happens next. The combat is visceral as you try not to waste ammo and beat up your opponents by any means necessary. Additionally, the graphics are still striking today, especially if you play the remastered version of the game.

Journey is a masterpiece

Journey

It's not often I cry when I play a video game, but Journey is such an emotional experience that I couldn't help myself. It tells the story of a soul traveling throughout its life, and along the way, you may meet a friend or two who help you on your journey. In the end, many realized their friends were played by strangers around the world. It's an incredible use of online functionality. The game itself is wonderful, with some fantastic set pieces, epic music by Austin Wintory, and gorgeous visuals that will stay with you for many years. It was in the running to be our Game of the Year in 2012.

Resistance 3

Another PS3 FPS series that has seemingly faded to dust is Resistance, and the third is arguably the best. As you'd expect from developer Insomniac Games, there are intriguing weapons available in Resistance 3 as they're mixed with alien technology. There is also an intriguing campaign that helped cap off the Resistance series with a mighty conclusion. "Its campaign is a thrill ride of rollercoaster-like set-pieces, huge boss battles, and consistently fast-paced action, and its multiplayer is a solid, enjoyable, anarchic complement," said our review, and I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately, the m?ultiplayer has long been taken down.

Heavy Rain

The PS3 generation began a trend of cinematic games, and Heavy Rain was at the forefront of that. Quantic Dream created a captivating story for players to follow as they try to figure out who the Origami Killer is and save the young boys who have been taken from their families. It feels like your choices and gameplay skills really change the storyline, making it a gratifying experience, at least for my teenage self when I played it. The music by Normand Corbeil is sensational and really pull us into the drama of Heavy Rain.

A smaller yet entertaining experience from PlayStation's library is rain on the PS3. You played as a child who is formed from the raindrops in the environment, and then he becomes invisible when you're in cover. It led to some creative sparks of puzzle gameplay within rain. The main objective is to find a lost girl within the Parisian landscape. "Calming and scary, amusing and sorrowful, rain is a game that jogs calmly through a gamut of emotions rather than sprints headlong into mood whiplash, and it’s incredibly difficult to ever dislike it, even during its twitchier moments," said our review.

God of War (2018)

The God of War series never clicked with me until the 2018 reboot released on the PS4. The monotonous combat and dull protagonist were replaced with more in-depth combat and believable characters you get invested in. Similar to Joel and Ellie in The Last of Us, players feel attached to Kratos and Atreus as they try to figure each other out and bond over a common threat. The powerful score by Battlestar Galactica composer Bear McCreery is also a highlight.

Ghost of Tsushima

Another PS4 gem is Ghost of Tsushima. Jin Sakai's internal struggle between becoming a gho??st and sticking to his samurai beginnings is captivating. T??he open world is a pleasure to explore with gorgeous Japanese scenary. Additionally, the combat feels smooth and satisfying to pull off.

Until Dawn

One of the best horror games on PS4 is Until Dawn by Supermassive Games. The Butterfly Effect mechanic is brilliantly executed, giving you plenty of ways to experience the story. All of the playable characters could either live or die, making Until Dawn an exciting title to play through. It does have an overly long opening, but Until Dawn makes up for it with great set pieces and emotional moments between the charac?ters.

Gravity Rush Remastered

Gravity Rush Remastered is an absolute gem every PlayStation fan should try. Flying through the air at a quick pace and ru??nning up walls are fantastic in this game. The storyline is intriguing as you explore the st??range town of Hekseville. The art is also gorgeous with its anime/art-deco stylings.

Bloodborne

Initially, I was going to put Demon's Souls on this list instead, but I feel like I'd be roasted if Bloodborne is ignored. And they would be correct. This gothic RPG set a ne??w standard for action-RPGs when it came out in 2015. The bosses are tough as hell but are designed immaculately. The atmosphere is grim but gloriously beautiful with its gothic buildings and the creepy citizens that dwell within it. The soundtrack is also impactful. A sequel or a remaster needs to happen on PS5. It's crazy it hasn't happened yet.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon: Forbidden West may not have set the world on fire, but Horizon Zero Dawn is a must-play game from the PS4 generation. It's one of the best PlayStation games because it has a unique post-apocalyptic premise.? It takes place many years after civilization has fallen, and tribes have arisen in the aftermath. There's plenty of environmental storytelling around Aloy, with subtle hints as to what happened to past generations and the robots that roam the earth. The combat is also exhilarating, with a focus on archery and traps rather than the typical sword. Taking down massive mechanical beasts is a thrill.

Gran Turismo 7

You can't have a best PlayStation games list without mentioning the Gran Turismo series. It's been massively successful as it has a wide list of realistically rendered cars, accurate tracks from around the world, and smooth simulation controls. Driving fans flock to this series every time a new game comes out, and Gran Turismo 7 is the most recent.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

It is difficult to come up with just one Ratchet & Clank game for this list, but Rift Apart just takes it. Insomniac's weapon design in Rift Apart is phenomenal, and the game constantly wows audiences with? its spectacular sci-fi worlds and set pieces. What helps the game is the use of the? PS5's SSD, letting you zip between worlds and universes in a matter of seconds. The addition of Rivet is also a plus, as she has a personality in spades.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is an absolute triumph. It melds Peter Parker and Miles Morales' storylines perfectly, and each of these characters has unique powers at their disposal, making the campaign more gripping. It's a rush to swing around New York, and in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, you can use the web-wings to roam the Big Apple even faster. The addition of Venom and other villains into the storyline is a delight, and it adds plent??y of drama to ?the mix.

Astro Bot

The most recent game on this list is Astro Bot, but it certainly deserves a spot. The platforming is spot-on and has very creative levels throughout the game. The character references to past PlayStation gam??es are incredible for fans, and there are even segments that pay homage to them, like catching monkeys with a net with an Ape Escape-themed level. Please play this game so we can get a sequel. Thanks!

Returnal is bonkers hard, but man, is it a good game. The action is thick and fast as you explore a mysterious sci-fi world. You're going through loops over and over again, trying to defeat bosses and other foes with the weapons you collect in each run. It's challenging, but the stellar gameplay, matched with impressive visuals, make Returnal a game you should try on your PS5.

Sony has been adding more PlayStation 2 games to its Classics catalogue on PlayStation Plus, starting with Tomb Raider Legend, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and the first Sly Cooper game. Hopefully, the other two Sly sequels will follow suit. But, in the meantime, it's said that Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus has bee??n the most popular so far, and has even had the biggest debut ever on PS? Plus Premium.

This is according to TrueTrophies, which sampled data from over 3.1 million active PSN accounts. While there are no exact figures, Sly Cooper saw 39.66% more active players the week of its PS Plus launch than Tomb Raider Legend (both games arrived on June 11). It also had 2.5% more players than what PS1 RPG The Legend of Dragoon, the former best-performing?? PS Plus Prem??ium game, had during its launch week in February 2023.

As a die-hard fan of the Sly series myself, it makes me very happy to know fellow PlayStation owners have flocked to the first game, be they returning fans or curious newcomers. At the very least, this shows there is interest in the series, though I'm hesitant to say this is all the evidence Sony needs to justify launching a hypothetical Sly 5. For starters, while it may rank at the top of the Premium tier, further data from TrueTrophies covering all of PS Plus puts Sly Cooper as only the eighth biggest PS Plus launch of 2024 so far, sitting below indie hit Animal Well and Borderlands spin-off Tiny Tina's Wonderlands.

Plus, I really can't think of a Sony owned developer that could take over the Sly series. Sucker Punch, which handled the original trilogy from 2002 to 2005, has made it clear it has moved on from the series, even stressing in a 2022 blog post that no Sly projects were in the works at any studio. It's also easy to assume the studio is busy working on a possible sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, especially considering how much of a sales success that game was, with its last recorded figures being 9.75 million copies by July 2022, two years after launch.

Sony enlisted Sanzaru Games for the fourth entry, 2013's Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, but that studio has since been acquired by Facebook and is now part of Oculus Studios. And while Sony has studios well-versed in making 3D platformers, like Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac Games and Naughty Dog (which made the Jak & Daxter games before moving onto Uncharted and The Last of Us), there are?? likely far too busy with other projects that would be more of a priority for the company.

A Sly 5 is sorely needed, if only to resolve the cliffhanger ending from Thieves in Time. With the odds of such a sequel happening so low, though, I think us fans will have to pin hopes on Sly 2 and 3 being added to the Classics catalogue, which will hopefully happen soone?r rather t??han later.

Today, Sucker Punch Productions published a message about its 25 years of games. In the process, it also confirms that no, it's not working on a new inFAMOUS or Sly Cooper game.

Sucker Punch says in its message that as its games continue to grow, they require the full attention of the studi?o. And being that it's currently focusing on one project, the studio says it's not working on any other one of its pro??perties.

"As our games continue to grow in scale and complexity, they require the full attention of our studio. With our focus on our current project, we have no plans to revisit inFAMOUS or Sly Cooper right now, and no other studio is currently working on projects related to those franchises either. These characters are very special and near and dear to our hearts, so while we’d never say never to re-opening those doors down the road, for now there are no inFAMOUS or Sly Cooper games in development."

An inFAMOUS legacy

That pretty much settles that. Sucker Punch does go on to confirm its performing maintenance on the inFAMOUS 2 UGC servers, to keep them running a bit longer. They will eventually be sunset, but Sucker Punch says it wants to keep them running "for as long as possible" for players who still want to dip in. The Cole's Legacy DLC for inFAMOUS Second Son will also be put up on the PlayStation Store in all territ??o?ries soon.

It's a bit of a strange announcement, though there have been rumors in the past of a return to Sly Cooper revival and the like. This just seems like Sucker Punch getting out ahead of that, as it works on something it says is unrelated to inFAMOUS or Sly Cooper. Sorry to all the fans of thieving animals.

Issuing a moratorium on how a thing "would be great on Vita," so, uh, I don't know what else to say. Sly Cooper is fun. And now the HD bundling of the first three games is playable on the Vi?ta.

Of course, it?'s also 30 bones and you can probably track down the PS3 version for less than half that price on Amazon. But, hey, it's a great fit for the Vita. Oops!

Hey look Vita owners, more ports! Yay.

God of War Collection will contain the first two God of War games, and will be out on May 6 for $29.99.

Sly Cooper Collection is also on the way for the Vita, and that will contain Sly Cooper and the Thievius Racconus, Sly 2: Band of Thieves, and Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves. It's all fully remastered in HD, an?d optimized for the PS Vita too. Expect this one to release May 27.

And the reason they went first-party

With the Playstation 4 on the horizon, developer Sucker Punch has their hands full with the third installment in the inFAMOUS series, inFAMOUS: Second Son. The team has come a long way since their small studio days with the Sly Cooper tr?ilogy on PlayStation 2 and is now set to deliver an experience that could define the launch of Sony's next generation?.

In a recently posted interview on Game Informer, Sucker Punch co-founder Brian Fleming discussed a few of the reasons the small company moved from its humble independent beginnings to going exclusive as a first-party team within Sony after the release of inFAMOUS 2.

"I think that ??we s??aw the sizes of teams continuing to grow year over year," Fleming said. "As a one-team shop you feel increasingly exposed. You feel the weight of the 100 families that depend on us being a business."

"...Central to that, and going ??back to our core values, wasn't? that we felt like this was the moment we could cash out at all, but was the chance to stay working with the people that gave us the best chance to make great games," Fleming added.

As for the thievius raccoonus Sly Cooper, Sucker Punch won't be revisiting the iconic Sony mascot any time soon. The torch has been passed, even i??f ??the departure was a little bittersweet.

"While it's fun to live and stay with your family; it's us?eful to move and ?it's useful to go somewhere new and have new experiences," said Fleming.

Hopefully the same sentiment holds true for the inFamous franchise. Don't get me wrong though, I thoroughly enjoyed the first two games in the series and Second Son is high on my launch day list. It's just after three games of more or less the sa?me, I'd like to see the talented developer do something new.

An inoffensive mini-game collection

Sony does a pretty terrible job at promoting its first-party games. For instance, take Sly Cooper.

Droves of gamers were not only unaware that Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time launched last week, but they were completely in the dark in regards to the fact that a second Sly Cooper game was actually coming out on the same day.

This is because Sony announced it the day of its launch, buried under a press release for Thieves in Time, never to be seen or heard from again.

That game is called Bentley's Hack Pack.

Bentley's Hack Pack is basically a collection of the various hacking mini-games found in the main campaign mode of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

If you've played the game already, you've come across these in the mandatory portions of the campaign, and you pretty much know what to expect going into Bentley's Hack Pack.

There's a twin-stick tank shooter (System Cracker), a scrolling shoot-'em-up (Alter Ego), and a Marble Madness-style game (Spa??rk Runner) -- the latter of which is?? operated entirely by way of motion controls.

But that's not to say that each game is just comprised of rehashed levels from the Thieves in Time hacking sections -- because they're not. They are all-new levels developed for the Hack Pack, along with some extras.

Specifically, Bentley's Hack Pack contains unique challenges for every level in the game, like no-death runs, high-score challenges, and hidden-mask hunts. Like your average $1-2 iOS game, it provides you with an optiona??l method of replay value, should you be inclined to want to go back and best your prior efforts.

Each game fee?ls fun in its own way, especially System Cracker, which has a degree of exploratio?n to it with the challenges in tow.

As you play through each stage and complete these challenges, you'll start to unlock little cosmetic trophies that you can view and read a little blurb about. If you're a Cooper fan, you're going to get more out of the Hack Pack as you press on to unwrap gifts and treasures that subtly reference old adventures from Sly 1-3.

Nothing is really earth-shattering in the slightes?t, but neat little factoids on items strewn about the franchise add to the charm of the overall package. There's also a special unlock at the very end, which fans are sure to enjoy.

Control-wise, everything outside of the Marble Madness-style game handles extremely well. Just like Thieves in Time, I found that for the motion-controlled portions of the game, the Si??x-Axis DualShock 3 co?ntrols are superior to the Vita's gyroscope, so play it on the PS3 if you can.

The Vita version's marble game is still serviceable, but on more than one occasion I fell to some pretty frustrating deaths after motion dead-zoning. It makes me long for developers to figure out that they don't have to force specific control methods in their games f?or the sake of it -- giv??e us options!

Sadly, unlike Thieves in Time, although the game is cross-buy compatible (meaning you get the PS3 and Vita versions with the same $2.99 purchase), it is not cross-save compatible. Meaning, you can't play on the go with your Vita, save your progress, and pick it up on the PS3 seamlessly through? through cloud save capability.

There's also no cross-interfacing features at all between this and the core release, in case you were hoping for a coin or item boost in Thieves in Time similar to Fable Pub Games and Fable II.

As Conrad perfectly stated in his Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time review, Bentley's Hack Pack, like t?he core ??iteration this mini-game collection is based on, is at worst, inoffensive.

If you're a retro gamer, you've already played other titles that present the core precepts these mini-games provide, but Bentley's Hack Pack has an interesting enough framework to actually compel you to keep going, with a bit of the ol' Sly charm to boot. For a ??few bucks, it's worth taking the plunge.

The Cooper gang is back in action

Sly Cooper has come out of retirement to try and solve the mystery of why pages have been dis?appearing from the Thievius Racc?oonus, the tome of family history for the Cooper lineage of master thieves. Reunited with best friends Bentley and Murray, the trio set off on a quest through time to save Sly and his ancestry from a mysterious new threat.

He's been brought back by a new development team this time around, Sanzaru, who also worked on the Sly Cooper HD Collection released last year. For their first time at bat on a wholly new game in the series, Sa??nzaru has opted to play it safe, making a game which fits nicely within the existing franchise with seemingly no ambition toward redefining it.

The plot of Thieves in Time is a bit silly, resembling a Saturday morning cartoon in terms of substantive value. By the end, the game seems to give up on the idea of trying to explain itself, and the resolution of the threat to the Cooper ancestors feels a bit hokey and half-assed, but there's some character development which takes place and expands the general narrative of the series in a positive way. Taken at face value, it's fun, with clever dialogue and a fair bit of cross-generational humor that should please the mature fans who have grown up with Sly already while remaining ag?e appropriate for it's?? teenaged, target audience.

The Cooper gang travels to five places and times within history (with stages in present-day Paris to bookend the game)?? where he'll meet up with the Coopers who came before him. Each time period features a moderately sized, open, explorable environment filled with collectibles and patrolling enemies, with several additional stages accessed through specific missions.

Sly 4 controls quite well, with accurate response to commands. The series' hallmark one-button environment interaction returns, a system which allows Sly to cling to ledges, ropes and footholds with a single command??, which also affords the player a little more wiggle room as Sly is guided toward interactive objects. It worked in the past and continues to do so here, taking much of the frustration out of narrow misses by preventing them from occurring in the first place, provided the player remembers to command Sly to cling.

Hidden within each of the stages are a number of collectible items, consisting of clue bottles and treasures. There are thirty of the bottles and collecting all o?f them will allow you to unlock that stage's safe for a special reward. Treasures, once located, must be car??ried all the way back to the gang's hideout in the stage without taking any damage and within a limited amount of time, adding a fun little challenge in most circumstances. And the players efforts for finding them are nicely rewarded by unlocking a mini-game back at the hideout when all are returned.

It's a fine amount of exploration-oriented content, without feeling bu??rdensome or overwhelming. All of the collection is optional and mis??sions which are set within the open environment rarely prevent the player from popping off real quick to collect an item they've only just noticed without failing an objective. The player is welcome to explore the open stage with any member of the gang, including Cooper's ancestors once they've joined up with the team. Each character has their own set of strengths and abilities, but the game offers very little reason to play as Bentley, Murray (or, later, Carmelita Fox) except when forced to by way of a dedicated mission, while the ancestors get slightly more love with a spot or two per overworld only accessible by them.

The stages are open in their design, but the progre?ssion of the game is almost entirely linear. Missions are designated for a specific character to play (though may involve other playable characters during the mission), and there's rarely more than one mission offered at any one time, making it clear to the player early on that their options, though available, are fairly meaningless. On the plus side, there are a lot of them, about ten missions in each time period, comprising a campaign with a robust ten or so hours of play.

As the player progresses through missions, new abilities for Sly and his friends may be purchased from within the hideout, using coins collected from destroying objects, pickpocketing enemi??es and returning treasures. Some, like the paraglider, are essential it??ems but most of the upgrades you can buy are rarely useful gadgets and ammunition types which add some variety but don't feel as though they contribute in any considerable way.

Other abilities are conferred to Sly through costumes collected in each of the different time periods. When worn, costumes may provide passive abilities, such as resistance to damage or letting Sly blend in with the locals and arouse less suspicion, as well as abilities?? which can be used to open new areas for exploration or provide solutions to environmental puzzles in missions. The costumes also restrict all of Sly's basic upgrades, however, limiting access to crucial abilities like the paraglider and any passive bonuses that have been purchased.

In the early game, it seems as though Sly 4 is going to make pretty good use of these costumes, with the first having some universal appeal in its ability to prevent damage from fire, a?n ability which comes in rather handy in boss fights throughout the game. Sadly, by about the midpoint, it becomes clear that puzzles in each region deal almost entirely with the abilities granted by the costume received there, with callbacks to older capabilities rare. Every ability winds up being used in the collection of treasures and bottles in the various overworlds, but little further attempt is made at trying to combine aspects of multiple costumes in the design of puzzles outside of boss encounters at the end of each region.

The ?boss fights themselves are decent, for the most part, and generally require mastery of the skills learned up to their point in the game. There is one blotch, one really poorly designed encounter which relies on the pl??ayer to accurately aim a slow-moving attack from a fixed camera angle and an enemy whose attacks are timed a bit too tightly for the exceptionally slow animations related to the necessary costume. This particular battle could be enough to make a player throw down their controller in disgust, and rightfully so, but they should be comforted by the knowledge that it never gets any worse than that.

Outside of the third-person platforming gameplay which makes up the bulk of Sly 4, comes the return of Bentley's hacking mini-games and a few other distractions. These include labyrinth mazes where the player guides a ball using Sixaxis motion controls to tilt the environment, side-scrolling shoot-em-up stages and a few, kind of forced rhythm matching games. They wo??rk great for breaking up the flow and preventing tedium, while still short enough as to be inoffensive if one type of game isn't your cup of tea (with the possible exception of a belly-dancing sequence which, in the current climate, might actually offend someone).

In fact, "inoffensive" is probably the word that best describes Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time from the perspective of a fan. It fits right in with its predecessors, offering a rather lengthy campaign and a fair quantity of optional content that's fun to play, though not particularly challenging most of the time. While there may be an expectation that a series' arrival in a console generation outshine all that came before, Sanzaru has made a perfectly acceptable game that may not advance the genre, but fe?els comfortable with right where it is.

Bentley's Hackpack is a cross-buy for PS3 and Vita

In addition to the launch of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time for the PlayStation 3 and Vita (cross-buy for PS3), another franchise title is coming out today on the PSN: Bentley's Hackpack.

It's priced at $2.99, and will also be part of Sony's cross-buy promotion, so purc??hasing it will net you both the PS3 and Vita version?s. For your cash, you'll get three types of minigames, 20 stages, 100 challenges, and leaderboards.

Why is this the first time most of you are hearing about this game? Because Sony completely threw out any chances at the game's success by completely ignoring it until they nonchalantly placed it in the last paragraph of a press release on release day, that's why. I really hope developer Sanzaru Games doesn't suffer the same fate as SuperBot.

When I heard the long-awaited next-gen Sly Cooper sequel would be put in the hands of Sanzaru Games, I lost all interest. Considering Sly 1 & 2 are two of my favorite games, th?at's a lot of interest to lose.

But, what do you expect when the developer behind the mediocre Secret Agent Clank and, uh, Ninja Reflex take the reins of a loved franchise? I'm happy to report that Thieves in Time is looking pretty good, all things considered.

Since Thieves in Time is, more or less, the same game on Vita and PS3, I opt??ed for the handheld experience. I found controlling the camera a bit troublesome and the low poly??gonal models unattractive, but enjoyed the touch controls and gyroscope moments. Overall, it wasn't a bad way to play the game.

The demo starts off with Bentley the Box Turtle and Sly bickering as Sly infiltrates some sort of medieval-themed circus. Really bad embarrassing jokes are made and boring exposition is given, but that's the way the series has always been -- it's charming in its own way. Before long, you get to the main draw of Sly Cooper: Inn??ovative level design and superb platforming presented with a one-?of-a-kind ambiance and style.

One of th??e key features of this sequel is new costumes which let Sly alter his abilities. By tapping on the costume button, Sly can dress up in a Robin Hood costume and shoot arrows at targets to create rope lines he can walk across. Making these rope lines is a lot more complicated then you'd think?? and a lot more fun, too. You take aim with a bow and arrow, and then control the arrow by tilting the Vita toward the bullseye. It's pretty tricky, especially as the targets become obscured by flaming boulders and other obstacles.

The bulk of the platforming felt as fluid as I remember Sly being on the PS2, but I did find issue with some minor details. A couple times I felt I'd awkwardly over-jump or not reach my target, a?s if I were being blocked by an invisible wall in mid-air. The game is still being polished, but the? demo didn't give me faith this would be the platforming gem that the originals were.

In addition to the costumes, Thieves in Time makes some cosmetic alterations to the series. There is now an arrow surrounding Sly and friends that points them toward the objective at all times. Falling down gaps now rewinds time and places you back on the previous platform. The Vita version also adds large buttons for costume changing and binoculars. I think? these are pretty helpful additions, so no complaints here.

The second section of the demo found mysterious ninja raccoon Rioch Cooperi taking Sly's place. This level, called "Sushi House," focused on the stealth. Facing an immediate fail state because you got caught in an enemy's spotlight is as annoying as ever. I didn't mind stealth in past Sly games, because they usually give you plenty of ??space to hide within.

That wasn't the case, here. Riochi does have his advantages, however. With Riochi, you can use his focus jump to quickly leap to fa??r away platforms. It's a scripted ability, designed to specific spots, but it has a nice tactile feel to it that makes it enjoyable to use.

Thieves in Time probably won't meet the high standard that Sucker Punch set, but it's not close to being the disappointment I feared it would be. With a little bit of ?polish, this could be the killer 3D platformer that Vita owners have been waiting for. Nothing wrong with playing it on the PS3, either.

This is the fourth game in the series, but it's the first new game on the PS3 -- as well as the first one not being deve?loped by Sucker Punch.

I'm really loving the look of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. Sucker Punch really created some awesome looking worlds and endearing characters when it launched the series in 2002 fo??r the PlayStation 2.

It's a bit of a shame the studio is focused what seems to be entirely on the world of Cole McGrath inFamous. Sanzaru Games is now handling the Sly series -- they're working on this sequel, and helped to develop the high definition remasters of the original. From the looks of things, they're on the right track, but there's a part of me that wishes Sucker Punch were at the helm instead of turning Cole into a vampire

Thieves in Time is out next year.

I went to a meeting earlier in the day to see a game that was billed "a mystery game from Sony." The only other information I knew about it was that it was announced at the Sony press conference yesterday.

I was hoping and praying the game was Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

Lucky for me, it was! GLORIOUS!

The game wasn't playable, but the folks ??at Sanzaru Games (the new developers) showed off a nice leve??l and boss battle for us to enjoy.

The first thing I noticed when the gameplay demo started was how much Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time looked exactly like the games on the Sly HD Collection currently on the PlayStation 3. Like, exactly.

And to be honest, that was a little disappointing. The trailer shown off at the Sony press confe??rence was obviously pre-rendered, but it had such a distinct and gorgeous art style that I was hoping this fourth game in the series would be a little more of a step up in the graphics department.

Luckily, though, as the demo progre??ssed, the small details in the visual presentation came forward and I was much more impressed.

First, to clarify an earlier mention, Sucker Punch is not doing this game. The duties have been taken over by Sanzaru Games, the creators of the still-impressive Sly HD Collection on the PlayStation 3. Don't freak out, though, Sly fans: Sanzaru Games seems pretty gosh-darned capable of making a good game. In fact??, on some?? points, they may actually be improving on the series.

As the l??evel played out, I began to notice the animation. During in-game cutscenes or even when just running around the stage, the characters display stunning facial animations. A lot of work has been done to make the game's characters as expressive as possible, and it shows.

My favo??rite addition? to the game, though, is the use of costumes.

In previous games, costumes were used primarily as cover to sneak into important parties or museums. In Thieves in Time, costumes grant Sly powers that can be used to access secret areas and perform special moves. This immediately made me think of Metroid, and that made me very happy.

The two? costumes shown in the demo were the pirate (I think?) costume and knight costume. The pirate costume ??allows Sly to slow down time (awesome use of this in a platformer section!) and the knight costume equips Sly with a shield that can be used to deflect projectiles.

I am in love with this new costume mechanic. Since I am assuming the gang of thieves (Sly, Bentley, and Murray are reunited for this game!) travels back in time at some point, one can only guess each of these tim?e periods contains a special costume that Sly can equip.

The demo also showed off a boss fight with a tiger named El Jefe. The boss ba??ttle was great, and Sanzaru promised each battle would be huge and include multiple tiers. Fine by me!

When asked about which previous game in the series Thieves in Time was most like, lead designer Matt Kramer said his team tried to pull something from all the games. As a huge fan of the series, this makes me happy, as the last game (Sly 3) had a little too much of an open-world feel. I want more platforming from the original game!

All in all, I left impressed with Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. I still have my doubts about the graphics, but the game is?? not out until 2012, so there should be plenty of time to clean things up.

This I know: I love Sly Cooper and Thieves in Time looks like a worthy new entry in the series.
