Broken characters are not a strange concept for fighting game fans, as even the most cherished and acclaimed franchises within the genre have a few within their m??ix.

But which among this wide array of infamou??s faces can be considered the strongest, or for some, most unfair? For all looking to see where their worst nightmares sit at the table, here are the 10 most broken fighting game characters in history.

10. Phoenix/Dark Phoenix (Marvel Vs Capcom 3)

Although one of the most fragile members of its roster, Phoenix opens our list for one reason above all, she has a boss-like second phase. To be more specific, Phoenix can turn into Dark Phoenix and recover all of her HP in all MvC3 versions if defeated while having five-meter bars. But like most bosses, she does not simply rise from the ashes, as the health regen is pa??ired with a full-screen Hyper, a 20% All DMG boost, and the ability to perform enhanced versions of all of her already upper-tier moves.

As a statement of how good the character is, even after being heavily nerfed with the release of Marvel Vs Capcom Ultimate, Phoenix is ?still o??ne of the most broken members of its roster to this day.

9. Hilde (SoulCalibur IV)

One of the most straightforward characters here, Soulcalibur IV's Hilde terrorized the community in the game's heyday given her long-range and known Doom Combo, which allows her to either ge??t a guarantee ?ring-out from almost anywhere in most stages or start a massively damaging loop by chaining set charged attacks.

To no one's surprise, that caused her to be eventually banned from multiple tournaments, as matches involving her would often end as soon as she mana??ged to score a hit.

8. Bayonetta (Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS)

In 2016, Nintendo decided to stay true to a fraction of Bayonetta's true power for her debut as the final DLC of Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS (or 4), which resulted in the Umbra Witch being able to zero-to-death targets no matter her placement by performing Witch Twist mixups. But wait, what if you beat her to the punch? In this case, she can, to this day, lock you in place by performing Witch Time for a guaranteed combo as well as stop you on your tracks from a?? distance by using a wide array of different projectiles that, if hit, will open you for a TOD.

Even if nerfed heavily since her debut, it's no surprise why many still dread meeting Bayonetta when returning to SSB4 o?n either its native platforms or on the Nintendo Switch.

7. Pet Shop (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future)

One of the most well-known broken characters in fighting game history and a highlight in a game famous for its unbalance, Heritage for the Future's Pet Shop is the definition of a frustrating matchup, as apart from being able to a??utomatically avoid lows and flying to create distance, he can also make use of homing projectiles and hit you at all times by dropping stalagmites with his Icicle Break Special.

The latter is what segments his spot here, as his ability to use the ability while being attacked and freely act while his p?rojectiles are on the screen allows Pet Shop to perform multiple unblockable mixups, many known to lead to TODs.

6. Sailor Uranus (Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon S: Jougai Rantou!? Shuyaku Soudatsusen)

Arc System Works's Sailor Moon S is, for many, the most broken fighting game ever released, given its over-the-top damage calculations and easy TODs, but no member of its roster comes close ?to Sailor Uranus. The reason for that does not lie in her damage or the various applications of one of her specials. Instead, it's all about her broken Shadow Dash move, which allows Uranus to traverse almost the entire screen at unmatched speed and becomes invincible if performed as a reversal when on the player 2 side.

The above allows her to?? both avoid most attacks and perform easy punishers, which can lead to her TODs and a few highly damaging special moves. Like most characters here, Uranus is currently banned from many competitions.

5. Lab Coat Android 21 (Dragon Ball FighterZ)

Lab Coat Android 21 is both Dragon Ball FighterZ 's last DLC character and one of the most recent personifications of DLC-meta. The reason? She was in a league of her own at launch by having both no noticeable weaknesses and the ability to lower the DMG of enemies by 21% while also i??ncreasing her Special DMG by the same amount through her Photon Pulse command grab —which, of course, could be easily performed mid-combo for a guaranteed hit.

The above led to the character b??eing slightly nerfed a few months post its release, as well as banned from multiple tournaments. Today, Lab Coat 21 is still considered a top tier, even if she is no longer alone at the top.

4. Meta Knight (Super Smash Bros Brawl)

Super Smash Bros. Brawl's version of Meta Knight is considered by many as the most broken character the Smash franchise has ever produced, a title he earned in part given his phenomenal mobility, omnidirectional moves, and ability to juggle opponents to oblivion through his Shuttle Loop attack. The biggest reason, ??however, lies in his ability to stall, as Meta Knight players can force time-out wins by both planking and then siz-zagging (or scrooging) below the arena or by performing his vanishing move Dimensional Cape before making a series of key inputs to trigger a glitch and stop him from reappearing.

As a surprise to no one, the above saw Kirby's?? rival being banned from multiple competitions, while those who still consider him legal decided to apply specific rules to guarantee fair play.

3. Gill (Street Fighter 2nd Impact and 3rd Strike)

Another character capable of resurrecting, Gill is infamously considered the most broken character in the Street Fighter 3 series, which says a lot considering the series' other great surprises, such as 2nd Impact's Ibuki.

Available for the first time in the home console port of 2nd Impact, Gill brings to the field all you can expect of a boss character by pairing his already-mentioned ability?? to come back at full life with unblockable AoE supper??s and the ability to deal massive amounts of chip damage, the latter which can cause you to be defeated without him having to land a single clear hit. To top it all off, he can also perform TODs.

2. Akuma (Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo)

Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo's Akuma is both one of the most ruthless bosses in fighting game history and one of ??its most broken fighters. Showcasing what I can only assume to be a lore-accurate description o??f the Destroyer of the Heavens, Akuma can send off extremely fast projectiles, has access to an unbelievable on-air fireball, and can perform improved versions of all of Ryu and Ken's moves. That is then paired with the highest damage in the game and an ability to —like Pet Shop�perform unblockable mixups at will.

The most infamous face when the subject is broken characters and by far the most unfair to ever be featured in a fighting game, MMPR: The Fighting Edition's Ivan Ooze is a nightmare capable of performing a wide array of spammable and multi-hit homing moves, most of which possess invincible variants. Also, did I mention that he is?? immune to throws, is the only character in the game capable of flying, and makes his inability to block meaningless through the way all of his moves —that's right, all of them�can lead to TODs?

Splatoon musician takes leave after 17 years

Video game composer Ryo Nagamatsu announced that they have left Nintendo following a 17-year tenure that saw them produce music for titles franchises including Splatoon, Mario Kart, Super Mario, and Smash Bros.

Speaking in a succinct message on Tw?itter, Ryo Nagamatsu implied that he has left Nintendo (amicably) in order to spread his creative wings a little further across the industry.

"I have made a decision to leave the company of April 30, 2023," writes Nagamatsu. "I will work a little wider and more directly to help those who need my help and to help the ?industry. Thank you all for your kind support! I look forward to serve you in the future! (an amicable settlement)"

Joining the studio in 2006, Nagamatsu plied his trade on some of the biggest releases for Nintendo platforms, composing music for Wii releases Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Wii Sports Resort. 3DS titles The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Mario Kart 8, and Mario Party: Star Rush, and in more recent years oversaw music composition and voice recordings for Switch titles Splatoon 3, Mario Party Superstars, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

He's Super Smashed, brother

Game designer Masahiro Sakurai has stated that he officially considers himself "semi-retired". The beloved Super Smash Bros. director made the comment in a new interview with Japanese outlet Denfaminicogamer.

"Sakurai confirms that he is semi-retired," reads a translation from Twitter's PushDustIn. "He is 52 after all. [With] Smash Bros. for 3DS / Wii U and Ultimate, he spent nin??e years in active development. Sa??kurai felt that if he is just continuously making games full time, and his life will be over before he realizes it."

While working tirelessly on the most recent title in the Smash Bros. series, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Sakurai would famously and frequently half-joke about his exhaustion, lack of social life, and endless need to keep working on the game, its updates, and its litany of DLC characters �all while fending off a tidal wave of requests and complaints from some?? members the platform fighter?'s community.

While Sakurai seemingly took his humongous workload with good humor, it's not difficult to imagine that he must feel as if he aged 20 years in 10, and when directing a title as under-the-microscope as Smash Bros. Ultimate was, it's perfectly understandable that he might feel as if he never needs to step into the spotlight ever again. Of course, Sakurai referred to being "semi" retired, and as such it might be hard for him to truly step away from game design/development 100%. Perhaps we will see Sakurai operating in an advisory or executive producer position in sporadic gaming endeavo?rs.

For the most part, however, it seems that his time as a game director is most assuredly over, and that Sakurai wishes to enjoy his coming years without the burden of game development weighing on his every waking moment. He's certainly earned a peaceful life �a statement that nobody can deny.

No matter how extensive your history with Nintendo is, there's something to be learned from the Smash Bros. series, especially when it comes to the big, small, and always heartfelt crossovers in Smash Ultimate. Before Smash Bros. became a thing, I was already hip to the Nintendo games that I played growing up. Aside from growing up playing fighting games like Virtua Fighter and Tekken, I played a lot of games from franchises that I know and love such as Mario, Sonic, Pokemon, Game & Watch Gallery, Kirby, and my personal favorite one of them all: Star Fox. I didn’t own a SNES growing up, but I do recall a time where I have played games such as The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong Country, Wave Race, Pilotwings 64, Killer Instinct�the list goes on.

Then came Super Smash Bros.??, and it opened up a door for me in t??he world of gaming.

Smash Bros. has been a part of my life growing up since it first came out in 1999. I was eight years old when I got the game for the N64. When I first played the game, I knew about Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Star Fox, Donkey Kong, and Yoshi. However, I didn’t know anything about EarthBound, F-Zero, and Metroid since I didnâ€??™t play any of those games growing up. But it ?did make me curious about what their games are like.

I remember one year later after the release of Super Smash Bros., I started playing F-Zero X for the very first time. Let me just say that it made me fall in love with the series and it left me wondering what the first game was like on the SNES. I thought to myself: “From this day forward, I’ll play a new iteration of Smash Bros. for every Nintendo console I’ll get.�/p>

Then in 2001, I remember getting a Nintendo GameCube for Christmas. I didn’t get Melee until a week after Christmas which opened up even more doors for me. There were a lot of Nintendo franchises that I was curious about and wanted to check out such as Ice Climber and for the first time ever: Fire Emblem. Growing up, it was amazing to see two characters from a Japanese-only Nintendo release coming to the West for the very first time. And thanks to trophies, it introduced me to classic, obscure, and imported Nintendo games such as Clu Clu Land, Kid Icarus, and many others.

I remember when I got into emulation, the first search I was looking for was Ice Climber because their gameplay intrigued me. And then that’s when I learned about Metroid, EarthBound, and many others just to see every reference. Hell, I even witnessed classic F-Zero and Star Fox on the SNES for the first time!

By the time Brawl came out, I knew most of the franchises that I’ve discovered while being introduced to games that I haven’t got to play yet such as Mother 3, Starfy, Custom Robo, and others. This is when my tastes for gaming started to evolve even more to a point where I wanted to see characters from other games get into Smash. Some of them pretty much made the cut through playable characters and assist trophies like Saki from Sin & Punishment and Little Mac from Punch-Out (who later became a playable character in Smash 4). I even looked up the Devil from Devil World and it was like a Pac-Man type of game in which he controls the screen while you move. It was also Shigeru Miyamoto's first consol?e game after he made a couple of arc?ade ones and his only game not released in North America due to religion.

Then came Smash 4. I remember getting hype for Mega Man joining Smash, plus characters from several games that I already knew such as Pac-Man, Little Mac, even Duck Hunt of all characters. The one character that I wasn’t familiar with is Shulk from Xenoblade Chronicles, since I never got a chance to play the series on the Wii. I do recall at the time of the reveal, Chuggaaconroy was doing his Let’s Play of Xenoblade Chronicles, which gave me a better understanding of how t??he game work??s. I have yet to play that game, along with the sequel and side games.

I pretty much hit a moment in my life in which any character from games that I usually play ended up making it to Smash. When Ryu from Street Fighter made it to the roster, I was excited to see how he would play in Smash and it went to a point where I wanted people to ??try the games that the characters originated fro??m.

And then came Smash Ultimate.

I remember when I was watching the E3 presentation for Nintendo, I was hype when I saw the tagline: “EVERYONE IS HERE!�All of the characters from past Smash games made their return, while we saw characters from games that I usually play such as the Inklings from Splatoon for example. And with every character reveal, I get happy when I see representations from other games make it into Smash, whether they are a playable character, Assist Trophy, or a Mii Costume. Not gonna lie, I was actually happy to see Akira from Virtua Fighter make it to Smash as an Assist Trophy, and in his classic VF1 polygonal look.

Then came the DLC stuff. While I was happy to see fans get the characters they want such as Joker from Persona 5, Banjo-Kazooie, and Hero from Dragon Quest, I was happy as hell when I saw Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury/KOF and Kazuya Mishima from Tekken join the roster! I also lost my collective shit when characters such as Sephiroth from Final Fantasy and Sora from Kingdom Hearts joined the roster, and I rarely play those games?.

Smash Bros. introduced me to several games that were obscure, released in Japan only, and also franchises that I ended up becoming a fan of. In addition to that, it helped me introduce people to games that they never played before. If you liked playing as Terry in Smash, try out Fatal Fury or King of Fighters since there’s a new title coming out soon. If you like playing as Kazuya, try out Tekken. If you liked Sora, play Kingdom Hearts.

Overall, if you are curious about the character you play in Smash and where they originated, don’t be afraid to try out the games that they came from. That also goes for the Assist Trophies and Spirits as well. Wh??o knows: you might end up becoming a fan of the game’s series.

Keeping the party going from this morning's reveal, Nintendo has released a video of Kingdom Hearts hero Sora performing what will be his Final Smash attack in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: "Sealing the Keyhole."

Footage of the attack was released separately to Twitter by Nintendo following Mr. Sakurai's official reveal stream, sugges??ting that perhaps the footage of the super special move in?? action was not quite ready at the time of shooting.

The Final Smash, which you can check out below, sees Sora knock his opponents into one of his many world-closing giant keyholes, before shutting the door on them and, apparen??tly, sealing them away from the battle. Looks like Cloud and Sephiroth won't be returning? to the ring anytime soon, especially given the way the attack actually shatters the door itself!

Sora, the final DLC character from Fighter Pass Vol. 2, will join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on October 18. Unlock the Keyblade master's potential

And there you have it. As revealed in the past few minutes by game director Masahiro Sakurai, Sora �protagonist of Square Enix/Disney RPG series Kingdom Hearts �is the next DLC character heading to Nintendo Switch brawler Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Sora represents not only the final character of DLC Fighter Pass 2, but also the final character of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, period. Sora will be made available in-game on October 18.

An emotional and beautifully crafted reveal trailer saw the Smash Bros. faithful welcome the Keyblade Master into their magical universe. Sora is, ?of course, no stranger to crossovers, having cut a path of adventure through a huge variety of classic Disney movies and Square Enix RPGs. The brave and likable youngster steps into battle wielding his classic Keyblade, affording Sora decent range and excellent anti-air and poking capabilities, as well as a ground-rocking down smash.

In addition, Sora has access to his classic Firaga, Thundaga, and Blizzaga spells from the KH series, which he can utilize in battle on a rotational basis, adding an element of strategy as players must decide which spell to have on deck for the given situation. Sora's Sonic Blade and Aerial Sweep attacks offer our kid domination of the air, opening up his opponent to a range of juggles and bursts. Not enough? Well, Sora also has a powerful counterattack, able to turn the tide of the melee and even deflect projectiles. Sora's Final Smash "Sealing the Keyhole" was separately revealed.

Sora's stage is based on Hollow Bastion, one of the final zones from the original Kingdom Hearts. However, as time or stocks deplete, the setting will dramatically segue to the "Dive of the Heart" stained-glass limbo, bedecked in images of legendary Kingdom Hearts characters such as Rikku, Kairi, Roxas, and Aqua, among others. Sora's alternate costumes include his gear from the mainline Kingdom Hearts trilogy, as well as his fun, B&W, Steamboat Willie ensemble.

In additional news, Splatoon and DOOM skins will join the mix as new Mii Fighter skins, and Minecraft's Steve and Alex will receive amiibo in t?h?e spring of 2022, with further amiibo planned for Pyra, Mythra, Sephiroth, and Kazuya Mishima.

In less than 24 hours, we'll know who the final downloadable addition to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster is??. The absolutely massive platform fighter will have its l??ast fighter revealed on Oct. 5, but before then, let's take the chance to take a few more shots at who will make it in.

The stream goes live on Oct. 5 at 7 a.m. PT / 10 a.m. ET, over on the Nintendo YouTube channel. It will be roughly 40 minutes long, and alongside the las??t fighter, Director Masahiro Sakurai will also reveal the final Mii Fighter costumes as well.

As Nintendo notes in the video's description, this is the final presentation for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The game launched right at the end of 2018, and has since rolled out a lot of DLC fighters, ranging from Persona 5's Joker to Banjo-Kazooie, the Hero from Dragon Quest, and Tekken's Kazuya Mishima. It's a big party, with every Smash fighter so far included, and even more get added ??over time.

Of course, for every character that makes it into Smash, there are plenty of fans who grow despondent over their favorite not making the cut. Whether they wield a key, a pair of swords, a Battle Rifle, or simply a "wah," everyone has a favorite to make the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lineup. And now, only one last fighter spot for Smash Ultimate remains.

With that, it means we've only got one chance left to wildly and irrationally speculate about which famous (or infamous) character from video game history may get immortalized in the Smash lineup. Will it be a Pokemon? A Nintendo character? A guest? Or even Sakurai himself? Here are our takes on who would really make a splash as the las?t addition toe the lineup.

Eric �The Hunter (Monster Hunter)

Dragon Quest got its Hero, and Animal Crossing got its Villager. It's time for Monster Hunter to get its Hunter in the game. Now, I know that Monster Hunter stuff is already in Smash Ultimate, but I think the series has enough Nintendo history to merit in?clusion in the ??big party.

The Hunter could easily be a character like Byleth, able to use a wealth of different weapons for each direction and special. And Hunters have no shortage of sick weapons, from the Insect Glaive to the Heavy Bowgun. Even Dual Blades would be sick. I've long believed that Monster Hunter would get a rep in Smash eventually, and now for my last slot, I have to keep the faith that the Hunter is the last Smash Ultimate fighter. A dark horse candidate for a big surprise, though? Crono from Chrono Trigger.

I'm writing this on my phone, so I'll keep it brief. It's time Nintendo remind everyone of its greatest hero by adding Stanley the Bugman to Smash.

Noelle �Waluigi

As someone who doesn't really play fighting games, I don't know much about Smash Ultimate. I am, however, well versed in memes, and which means I know just how badly the Smash community wants to see Luigi's long-legged counterpart? on th?e roster.

I have no idea what his attacks or anything would be like, but as someone whose friends are really invested in seeing this happen, I would be over the moon by association. Considering it's the last fighter to be added, I think Nintendo could really win some ??brownie points with the community for this one. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Jordan �Voldo (or anyone from Soulcalibur, really)

The final char??a??cter is the friends we made along the way.

So many boxes were ticked with this game. If the last Smash Ultimate fighter is from a series I don't vibe with, someone who's been hiding in plain sight all along, or something completely unc??onventional that came to Sakurai in a dream �wh?atever the case may be, it's been a wild ride, and it'll be nice to have closure. Let this man take a break!

I've got a real guess and a fun guess. For the former, I'm saying Zagreus from Hades; lots of p?ossibilities with his weap?ons. For the latter, I'm going with my man Voldo.

If I'm making a wishful pick �a one-in-a-million shot that defied corporate expectations and just felt weirdly right �I would turn to the Soulcalibur series. Having Link as a guest character in Soulcalibur II was awesome back in the day; now it's time for Nintendo to return the favor in Smash Ultimate. Honestly, I'd be down for any of 'em. But the masked,? wriggling, chaotic energy of Voldo is immediately where my mind goes.

As Nigel Thornberry would say, "smashing!"

Nickelodeon is getting in on the platform fighting game genre with its animated cast of characters. Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl was announced today for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox ??Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch this fall, and it's got a whole host of Nick stars ready to brawl.

Revealed over at IGN, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl looks like a platform fighter, or put a little more directly, a Super Smash Bros.-alike. It definitely seems like there's some knocking around of opponents, and the moves definitely have the sort of animations and attack style you'd expect from a Smash.

There have been plenty of other platform fighters in the past, and Nickelodeon is no stranger to show-crossover games. The prospect of fighting on some platfo??rms with them, though, sounds kind of entertaini?ng.

The full lineup isn't announced ye??t??, but here's a rundown of who's confirmed to appear in the game so far:

  • Danny Phantom (Danny Phantom)

It's a pretty solid lineup, though I'm ?hoping that it being unfinished means there's a certain element-bending Avatar on the way. Though honestly, Powdered Toast Man is not a character I would've ever expected to see in a video ?game in the year 2021.

There are also 20 levels based on Nickelodeon shows, like Jellyfish Fields from SpongeBob, as well as both local and online support for four players and unlockable? new moves for fighters.

We'll see if this has ?any sticking power, but any fighting game that includes Nigel Thornberry in its cast has my attention.
