Featuring Denuvo the DRM

If you’ve been holding off on buying Sonic Colors: Ultimate because you want to play it on PC and you can’t stand the Epic Games Store, your day has come. Sort of. Sonic Colors: Ultimate has launched on Steam.

Initially released for the Wii in 2010, Sonic Colors is one of the series�games held in higher regard. The 2021 �i>Ultimate�version refurbishes it for newer consoles, remastering the graphics and soundtrack while also adding some additional features. Destructoid’s own Chris Carter described it as “one of the better one?s to trot out.�Yeah! Like a pony!

But let’s tug the reins here because reception to the PC port hasn’t been exactly glowing. Steam users are reporting that it’s a pretty rough version filled with “glitches and bugs.�I’ve skimmed through the list of reported issue??s to see if I could summarize better, but I’ve only succeeded in finding that “everything�is broke?n. Audio, graphics, UI, and controls. Of course, being on the PC platform means that most people will get a different experience based on minute differences in both the hardware and software environment they’re running.

However, you should also note that Sonic Colors: Ultimate also comes saddled with Denuvo DRM.

It’s unlikely a patch is coming to fix things anytime soon, as this is t??he same version as what was released on the Epic? Games Store over a year ago, and it’s still in the same rough shape. I’m not suggesting you avoid this release entirely–I’m not your game-mom–just know what you’re potentially getting into.

Sonic Colors: Ultimate is available on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo? Switch, and on PC through the Epic Games Store and ?Steam.

New games are in store, too

Sega is looking to strengthen the branding of its many franchises. For fans of their older games, this might be a good thing, as Sega is saying it plans on making mo?re remakes, remasters, and other related content in the coming fiscal year.

In Sega Sammy's annual financial report, the company established some of its plans for the future. One of these is prolonging product life cycles, through games Sega defines as a remake, remaster, spin-off, or change of theme. Examples given range from Lost Judgement and Sonic Colors: Ultimate to Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania.

In fiscal year 2022, that category pulled in about 4M unit sales; in the 2023 fiscal year, it plans for about 5M unit sales, and is planning multiple titles to do so. As a reminde??r: Sega's fiscal year runs April to March, so this coming fiscal year will be from April 2022 through March 2023.

Sega also outlines its general gaming plans for the coming year, where it estimates to have 13 titles (up from 7 last fiscal year). The publisher only lists games we know about already, like Sonic Frontiers and Soul Hackers 2. Still, an ?overall increase in game output looks likely from Sega in the com?ing year.

Gotta remake fast

We can probably take a guess at some of the new games in store. A recent report from Bloomberg indicated Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio were on deck for Sega's "Super Game" initiative, though with some concerning details in the fine print.

As for other projects, well, we can always plumb the depths of Sega's past. We've already seen some movement on franchises like Sonic the Hedgehog with the upcoming Origins collection. Is it too much to hope for Skies of Arcadia? Surely t??he sky pirate faithful out there would be?? eager for one.
