My brain keeps wanting to say Rogue Galaxy

I almost need a PSA to remind me to bring you these Epic Games Store PSAs. Almost. The giveaway period for this week's free game, Rebel Galaxy, runs from August 12�9.

Now I know "flawed but fun" isn't a super enticing pitch, but when we're talking about a small-team production like Rebel Galaxy, some elements are naturally going to be better than others, and y??ou try to focus on those to enjoy the wider experience, which is pretty cool. This is a space-adventure game with trading, smuggling, and naval-like combat.

As our reviewer, Nic Rowen, first summed up almost six years ago, "your ship in Rebel Galaxy performs more like a boat than a spaceship, locked on a single two-dimensional plane that you can steer around on left and right, but not up and down. Other capital ships are?? locked to the same plane, making standoffs with them feel like large naval battles. Meanwhile, smaller ships �such as enemy fighters and your hired wingman �zip around in a fully 3D space. They’ll be coiling and wrapping around your larger vessel as you try to train your various mounted turrets on them, worry about the exposed shielding on your portside, and prepare to deflect an incoming volley of torpedoes."

Does that sound interesting enough to outweigh wider issues with repetitive content? I'd say so. For a time, anyway. The thing is, Rebel Galaxy was always a budget ??game �it launched at $20 �so it's best to come in with calibrated expect??ations. And now that it's free-to-claim, there's less pressure to keep playing once you hit that boredom wall.

A sequel, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, was released in 2020, though it's got a much different space-co?mbat vibe. It's a classic take-it-or-leave-it "mixed" response from players.

The free-game train hasn't derailed yet, so next week we're getting Void Bastards, an FPS roguelike, and Yooka-Laylee, an N64-i??nspired 3D platformer, from August? 19�6.

Burning Crusade isn't the only flying mount game in town

Hello Games' No Man's Sky keeps on growing, and the new Prisms update is adding even more to the mix in terms of lighting, interiors, and things t??hat can fly.

Update 3.5 features a big visual overhaul of No Man's Sky, adding screen space reflection for PC, next-gen conso??les, and Xbox One X. Volumetric lighting an?d parallax occlusion mapping add more ambiance, and on PC, players can take advantage of deep learning super sampling (DLSS) to get better performance and visual quality.

It's not just a visual update, however. Caves wi??ll get more detailed and diverse, fur has been added to a range of creature?s, and yes, you can ride your flying pets. Low-flying creatures like giant beetles and butterflies can all carry you across the skies of planets.

No Man's Sky has been steadily expanding since its launch in 2016, gradually becoming the game eager fans had dreamed it would be—and possibly even beyond that. I mean, it had the Normandy from Mass Effect added for a spell. That's rad!

Until next Thursday, November 26, you can nab Elite Dangerous and The World Next Door. If you've always thought about trying your hand at exploring the vastness of space but you never found the right time – or should I say enough time – for Elite Dangerous??, it's a good opp, especially if you're set up for VR flights. Frontier Developments is still supporting the?? game with ongoing expansion content, too.

I had never heard of The World Next Door, and I figure that goes for most of you. It's part visual novel, part action-puzzle-battler. Interesting combo! The plot centers on Jun, a tee?n trying to return home from a magical world "before time runs out," and there are dialog and relationship choices to fuss over.

I'm more excited about next week's pick-up, MudRunner, for its out-there factor. I'd ne??ver buy an all-terrain vehicle simulator, but I would absolutely check one out for free. I've heard ??good things.

It's joining the base game next month

If Elite Dangerous is the final frontier, then its Horizons expan?sion is the free frontier. Starting in a month, anyway.

Elite Dangerous is getting an update next month that rolls the Horizons add-on into the base game on all platforms. You could look at this and say it's permanently free. But, it might be more appropriate to say that Horizons is just part of the standard Elite Dangerous experience from now on. 

Whichever way you view it, Elite Dangerous is going to get bigger on October 27. For anyone who already purchased Horizons, they'll get Azure paint jobs that can be used on all ships in the game. Horizons will remain on sale until October 26, effectively only so people have a last chance to buy those Azure paint jobs. That doesn't seem like an amazing use of $30 but I'm not?? in charge of your personal finances.

Horizons is Elite Dangerous' only real content expansion, but this shrewd move is clearly a means of onboarding new players before 2021's Odyssey add-on. There's a lot to be excited about when it comes to Odyssey, as this is the expansion that'll allow you to ditch the spaceship and explore planets on foot. Developer Frontier is knocking down barriers to get deep into the Elite Dangerous ecosystem in hopes that it'll translate to Odyssey sales. It makes sense. When a game like Elite Dangerous get??s its hooks in someone, it usually doesn't let up for a long time.

Frontier doesn't want the expansion to feel 'compartmentalized'

Frontier Developments is starting to open up about Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, the next step in the space sim's ongoing adventures. In this "early 2021" expansion, you'll be able to ditch your ship for a bit of otherworldly on-foot exploration. Better yet, you'll be able to scan alien vegetation and sell the data??.

I recently spoke with a pair of developers working on Odyssey to try and fill in a few of the blanks.

Art director Jonathan Bottone called Odyssey "one of the largest updates where we've taken the technology that we had originally, reworked it based on the simulation, and created an even more immersive experience than before." Players have been losing themselves in Elite Dangerous since 2014.

Odyssey is a visible new entry point for the long-running game but "not at the expense of the existing player base," according to lead designer Gareth Hughes. Frontier is sticking to the "fundamentals" of Elite. "Fo??r us, it's combat, trade, exploration, and all the blurry bits i?n between that merge," he said.

"It's 'How can we take those things from the space game and transpose those into on-foot so it doesn't feel like we're making a com??p?artmentalized addition?' It feels like a layer across the whole game."

Planetary exploration will be a matter of "How far can I go before my suit energy starts to run out? Am I going to be able to make it back to my ship? Am I going to be ambushed while I'm out ther??e?"

"We're playing around with how heat, gravity, ?and radiation will af??fect the player," said Hughes.

"We're?? still balancing that stuff. It has to be enough of a threat without suppressing your ability to actually go out and explore. It's a really fine balance to make these environmental factors meaningful without them affecting the g?ameplay loop so severely that it's no longer fun."

Whatever it takes to fill in Cod??ex entries, ?I'm probably in. They'll claw away at my mind.

Aside from your pilot's scanner – a tool used to "identify organics in your locality on the planet surface" and extract "genetic infor?mation that can be sold back at port" – I had to ask about outposts.

Hughes told me that human settlements are "populated by the factions you're used to seeing." You can accept missions from NPCs, trade with them, "massacre them," play the role of pirate – the usual. Elite Dangerous "doesn't tel??l you who you have to be and when you have to be that."

Players will also be able to disembark at ports. They're intended to be "social hubs where you can meet other players, find mission givers that you might not otherwise experience, and create a safe space whe??re pilots can meet and do piloty things," according to Hughes. "The social element is important."

I'm curious to see how on-foot combat shapes up – it wasn't shown during the remote press event – and how well Frontier will manage to keep planets feeling distinct from one another given the scope of Elite in general and this DLC in particular. Odyssey seems li??ke a challenge, but it's one worth taking on.

More space shooty shooty bang bang

While I enjoyed the original enough, Everspace 2 looks like a vast improvement on its predecessor ahead of it's release to early access later this year. For those of you who cannot wait though, and aren't afraid to get your hands dirty with some possibly janky gameplay, a closed alpha for the game is coming this week, June 15 to S??team. While most alpha participants have been chosen thanks to the original crowdfundin??g campaign, there are still some spots available if you email info@rockfishgames.com.

Along with the alpha announcement, there was some new footage that looks to scratch more of my long lost Star Fox 64 all-range mode battle itches that have gone unscr??atched for ?decades.

Everspace 2 is slated for an Early Acce?ss release later this year on PC with a full console release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2021.

Moonwalk

The next major Elite Dangerous&n?bsp;expansion will put players in a position they've never bee??n before: Upright, on two legs, walking about extraterrestrial planets.

In March 2019, Elite Dangerous developer Frontier Developments teased that the next major update would be "a defining moment in the history of the game." We now know the scope of that statement. The Odyssey expansion will introduce atmospheric landings and exp?loring on foot.

There's more, of course. Frontier also describes N?PC mission-givers, encounters that range from stealth to "all-out combat" (from a first-person perspective), social hubs, and a deep customization system for weapons and armor.

In a way, it sort of sounds like the Dust 514 to EVE Online. But, we'll find out more about the nitty gritty of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey so?metim?e down the road. It's currently expected to launch in early 2021.

2020's most depressingly realistic sci-fi sim

A few weeks out from the June 16 Steam Early Access launch, we've got a fresh look at Hardspace: Shipbreaker, a cathartic ga??me about slicing derelict spaceships to extract their precious innards so you can pay down a billion-cred??it debt. I'm on board for the sinister premise and cool laser cutting.

Today's video is a four-minute gameplay overview. If you ever got a kick out of Dead Space's "strategic dismemberment," Hardspace is like that, but more – minus the terrifying, effed-up body h??orror.

That said, it's by no means a carefree venture. As the voice-over explains, "one accidental cut could mean the destruction of the entire ship and you along with it." During each job, you'll scan for potential hazards like fuel lines and pressurized cabins that require finesse with your laser cutter tool, and when you reach the heart of the ship in hopes of a big payday, you'll have to hurry. When a ship's valuable reactor is extracted from its coolant tank, it becomes a ticking time bomb, and you'll need to safely drag it around with a?? leash-like grapple tool until you deposit it at the salvage bay's drop-off zone.

Blackbird is also planning to bring Hardspace: Shipbreaker to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but one thing at a time. For now, I'm pretty intrigued by the Early Access pitch. I'm hopeful the mechanical foundation and carrot-on-a-st??ick gear upgrades are strong enough to support the weight of a 15-hour ??story.

That's just Act 1, by the way! They??'re swinging for the fences ?with an eventual 40-hour campaign.

Michael Collins finally gets his chance to moonwalk

It's uncharted territory for No Man's Sky next month. ??But, that's what Hello Games' reviled-th??en-revered space exploration game is all about: Taking the uncharted and charting it.

In June, No Man's Sky will join the Xbox Game Pass lineup. It's the first time No Man's Sky will be available as part of a subscription service, whether the Game Pass "Netflix for Games" type or the PS Plus "free games every month" model. It's also one of the biggest games on Xbox Game Pass in two senses: No Man's Sky has functionally-infinite worlds, and there are few non-first-party titles on Game Pass with more name?? recognition.

No Man's Sky is approaching its fourth anniversary, a memory most everyone would do well to forget. It had the rockiest of launches, and that somehow still feels like an understatement. However, that's not the relationship Xbox players have had with No Man's Sky. The Xbox port released in 2018 alongside the "Next" update. By most accounts, that's when No Man's Sky got good, and it has only gotten better since then. Come next month, the solar system is gonna open up for 10 million new space cadets.

I'm floating in a most peculiar way

Kerbal Space Program 2 won't be ready until fall 2021. In a note shared on Twitter this afternoon, the developers explained their decision to delay the tense, intri?cate, goofball-starring sim game.

"We are making a big, expansive game loaded with new features, but doing so will take longer than we previously anticipated," the team said. "With everything going on in the world today due to the COVID-19 outbreak, we're facing many unique challenges that require more time to safely iterate, create, test, and make KSP2 as great as it can be. We understand this isn't the news you were hoping to see, but ultimately we need to make the best decision for the development of Kerbal Space Program 2."

Expect to see "feature videos, developer blogs, an??d other content"? leading up to the 2021 launch.

Delays can be tough on developers and fans, but I could use this extra time to brush up my aerospace skills. I've forgotten most of the fundamentals over the past several years, and I am afraid. That's to say nothing of the new activities like resource gathering, colony building, and interstellar ??travel. Dedicated fans might see? these as exciting opportunities, but right now, I'm only pict??uring my slow demise.

When it comes to sequels, expectations are naturally going to be elevated, so it's important that KSP2 feels like a worthy successor. ?This isn't one to rush, especially not amid a pandemic.

The developers are excited about what's in store

Hello Games' stellar post-launch support of No Man's Sky will continue for the foreseeable future.

The team shared encouraging words this week in a blog post, noting that they're "working up some more ambitious additions to the [No Man's Sky] universe" and that there's "so much more planned for 2020 for us to feel excited about." When they're into it, we're into it – that passion radiates.

Seeing everything laid out like this brings home how far the game has come. When you take a break from playing and don't ?keep tabs every week, it can be easy? to forget. The journey isn't even over.

Hello Games could conceivably work on updating No Man's Sky for years if there's a next-gen console upgrade, and with potential for a seri??es, the studio could live in this universe for a decade to come.

The Epic Game Store deal has a few more months

Outer Wilds won't be an Epic Games Store exclu??sive on PC for too much l?onger. Annapurna Interactive and Mobius Digital are bringing the space-faring mystery adventure game to Steam on June 18, 2020.

Outer Wilds was a game-of-the-year contender and winner ??in many circles, and it's not easily forgotten. It's an experience for people who want to genuinely explore – to figure out how things work, and why, and what that means. Sometimes, that can be frustrating. Other times, it can be brain-massaging bliss.

Our own Josh Tolentino likened the game to a "Deus Ex-style immersive sim, except wrought over the scale of a planetary system" in his review. "Outer Wilds' ? game world is wound like a tightly packed cuckoo clock, all interlocking components whirring endlessly on a 20-minute window of inevitability."

The Steam audience is going to latch onto it in a?? big way. I can already picture the cheeky user reviews.

Steam Early Access version planned for summer 2020

It's a pleasant surprise to hear that Hardspace: Shipbreaker is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One after its Steam Early Access run starts this summer. In the sci-fi sim game, you play as a salvager who's working to pay off a debt ??by strategically slicing off valuable parts from spaceships with a laser cutter.

It's such a c??ool concept for a game. I haven'?t seen anything quite like it before on this scale.

Blackbird Interactive (Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak) has big plans for Hardspace: Shipbreaker, but in the beginning, for Early Access, the simulation game will have two types of ships to crack open, a sandbox mode, and the first act of the story campaign, which should take around 15 hours to beat. The finished campaign will have more mission vari?ety and could end up being 40 hours long. It'll be a beefy game.

"We have a rough plan?? for a year of development beginning in May 2020," the studio said of the Early Access PC version. "However, game development is a long, difficult, and massively fun process that can easily extend beyond plans once you involve the excellent ideas of a big community. We'll decide down the line exactly how much game we consider to be the 1.0 version, but we'd rather stay in Early Access for as long as needed than come out early to hit an imaginary window we've set for ourselves."

I'm curious how this game might run on consoles considering all of the c?ra??zy physics-driven mayhem.

On that note – and given the roadmap leading up to version 1.0 – I won't be surprised if Hardspace ends up drifting onto PlayStation ?5 and Xbox Series ??X. Microsoft is perfectly fine with work-in-progress Game Preview builds on Xbox One, but Sony doesn't have its own Early Access equivalent on PS4. We'll see!

I always wanted you to go into space, man

Hello Games has released the latest in a long line of updates for its interplanetary exploration title No Man's Sky. Along with a huge list of bug fixes and mechanical tweaks, the "Living Ship" update adds some very strange new vessels, ships which are, as the name suggests, organic creatures in and o?f themselves.

These organic and sentient vessels can be added to your fleet, allowing you the chance to explore their pretty unsettling interiors in full VR. Hope you like tentacles and tendrils. The origins of these creatures will be explored in an all-new story mission, Starbirth, which will let you incubate,?? grow, and birth your own living ship... Annnd we're done with lunch.

Alongside the Starbirth story chapter, the new update contains numerous quality-of-life fixes, with changes made to inventory management and a streamlined procedure to group up with friends in-game. Hello Games has also made improvements to several visual effects, such as cloud and water shaders. Hyper Light Drifter is tomorrow

FTL: Faster Than Light is free on the Epic Games Store, but you do not have to be f??a?ster than light to claim it. You do have to be reasonably prudent, though.

For 24 hours (but even less time than that when you're reading this), Subset Games' FTL is the featured title during Epic's 12 Days of Free Games promotion. The addictive spaceship sim roguelike has captured hearts in the seven years since it released. Just go here to claim it.

Oh, the places you'll go

Game of the year candidate Outer Wilds lands on a new platform next week. Aft?er successfully touching do?wn on PC and Xbox One in June, it sets out to explore PS4 on October 15. It'll cost $25.

It's tough to nail down exactly what Outer Wilds is. It melds galactic spacecraft travel of Interstellar with a timeloop adventure akin to Majora's Mask. Every 20 minut??es, you're pulled back to your home planet, free to head back out to far away space rocks in hopes of unraveling this giant mystery just a little bit further.

It's a game that trades in revelation and discovery, the sort of experience where seeing it for yourself is its own kind of reward. If you're not convinced, I'd urge you to read Josh's 9/10 Outer Wilds review where he says it "brought to mi??nd my favorite bits of Dr. Seuss' Oh, The Places You'll Go...except with more of the sun exploding."

This time, player progression will be persistent

The roguelike space sim Everspace is getting a sequel on PC and consoles, but it's dropping those frustrating mechanics in favor of "an open-world space shooter with classic RPG el??ements and persistent player progression." Rockfish brought its debut trailer to Gamescom: Opening Night Live.

Along with structural changes, the developer is p??romising more player ships and better storytelling.

Everspace 2 will launch in the second half of 2020 on PC, starting off in Steam Ear??ly Access, followed by a full release across PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2021. It's cool to see them take another sh?ot.

Packed my bags last night, pre-flight

During today's Gamescom Opening Night Live stream, Private Division unveiled a trailer for a sequel to the popular, slightly goofy, space simulation title Kerbal Space Program, which wowed audiences in 2015.

Beginning with a dramatic, almost Kubrick-esque trailer featuring the fina??l frontier, but it was then soon revealed that the cute little explorers, Kerbals, are preparing to once more venture into the vastness of the stars.

Set to blast off on August 14

No Man's Sky is turning into one big p??arty. Grab your spacesuit, your VR helmet, and a sixer of moon juice.

In what Hello Games is calling its biggest update yet, No Man's Sky is adding functionality and features that will make it a more robust game. The addition with the most widespread appeal is an overhaul to the approach to multiplayer. Last year, No Man's Sky implemented synchronous four-player co-op. This year, it's dabbling in MMO tendencies, as Hello Games says "An expanded online experience will bring a radi??cal new social and multiplayer experience which empowers players everywhere in the universe to meet and play together."

More niche (but nevertheless very cool) is the support for VR. All current No Man's Sky content will be playable on Oculus Rift, V?ive, and PSVR. It's not a separate experience. Further, cooperative parties can co-mingle, meaning it's possible to play in VR alongsid?e your non-VR friends.

All of this is coming sooner rather than later. The free "Beyond" update is scheduled to release on August 14 on PC, PS??4, and Xbox One.

Better than between the moons...

We've got some Steam copies up for grabs in today's contest for Between the Stars!

Space is super big. And super vast. And super scary. It's kind of like the ocean (huge, expansive?, terrifying), but like, different. It's so weird! I think I'll keep my feet firmly planted on terra firma, thank you very much.

No Man's Retry

I didn't even last ten minutes into my first session with Outer Wilds, the intriguing open-world adventure game from Annapurna Interactive and Mobius Digital. A freshly minted astronaut from the tiny world of Timber Hearth, I took a bit too long admiring my spiffy new spaceship on the p?latform, before accidentally stepping off the edge and falling to my demise.

I made it all the way into space the next time, even landing on the moon to visit a local named Esker, but I got too caught up launching space probe?s at my campsite back home - while listening to Esker's whistling - that I didn't notice the sun exploding until the shockwave engulfed the planet.

Needless to say, I haven't been the most successful space explorer in Outer Wilds' hi?story, but the beauty of it is that I'l??l get there eventually, 20 minutes at a time.

Of course, It's not all about dying horribly, though one's repeated, often ignominious demise is a major means to an end in Outer Wilds. After all, how else does one deal with the sort of Groundhog Day-style time loop that entraps the game's setting?

As the only member of the Outer Wilds Ventures exploration crew that remembers what happens across each loop, players must spend 20-o?dd minutes - the time between waking up to roast marshmallows before ?your first flight... and the sun exploding -  exploring the solar system as much as they can in search of answers and adventure.

And what a solar system it is. Unlike the algorithm-inflected environs of vast games like No Man's Sky and Elite Dangerous, Outer Wilds' solar system is bespoke and intimate in scale, its aesthetic sense informed by a cartoonish, almost childlike understanding of astronomy. Here, rounded edges, clunky charm, and evocative, archaeological mystery take precedence over sleek technology and photorealism. Heck, your trusty spaceship is made of wood. Its launch tower is flammable. 

In Outer Wilds, individual planets are tiny, not much bigger than the likes read in The Little Prince. Each location is unique and varies wildly, from the placid forests of your starting location at Timber Hearth, to the collapsing caverns of Brittle Hollow, to the storm-wracked, waterlogged Giant's Deep, to the Hourglass Twins, a pair of planetoids that constantly shift huge?? tracts of sand across their shared orbit. 

All these bodies (and more besides), move according to schedule, with various events and developments seeming inevitable on the course to the sun exploding. This schedule, and gaining a sense of it, is key to solving the game's many mysteries. By this time most of Brittle Hollow will have been imploded into the black hole at its center, meaning you have to explore and visit key areas before everything's swallowed up. On the other hand, the sand flow from one Hourglass Twin to the other won't expose these important ruins until this much time has passed, meaning you've got to wait for a bit before you can hunt down that last clue. I'm just scratching the surface of the events that occur in Outer Wilds' solar system. I'm wary of revealing much more, considering how much of t?he game's joy is in finding things out for yourself.

If this sounds a bit like a Deus Ex-style immersive sim, except wrought over the scale of a planetary system, you'd be pretty close. Outer Wilds' game world is wound like a tightly packed cuckoo clock, all interlocking components whirring endlessly on a 20-minute window of inevitability. The only loose elements, so to speak, are you, your trusty spaceship, and a few exploration tools. Tools such as a signal antenna, a? portable spaceprobe launcher, and a translator gizmo to interpret?? the scrawls of the ancient aliens, whose ruins are scattered all over the system.

That said, Outer Wilds isn't a "role-playing game" by the commo?nly understood definition. There's no progression system, no perks to unlock, no side missions to grind, no quest-giving NPCs. The only "XP" you earn is the "experience" of seeing through each loop, starting over with new hints as to how to proceed next time. A helpful ship's log does provide some support in the form of a s?piderweb-like network of related hints, as well as a telltale icon indicating when you haven't quite collected every possible clue in a given location. 

The journey may be a blast most of the time, but it's not without its bumps, of course. The log might be helpful, but as you close in on the last clues you need to solve a puzzle, or break into the toughest or most tightly-timed areas, frustration can set in. There are points where I really would've appreciated a more explicit (but optional) hint system, a button to press when I'm really ready to admit defeat, but not quite ready to ask someone to spoil it for me. Outer Wilds' use of semi-realistic physics in the spaceflight model could be challenging for some players with motion sickness, or even just those trying to get by with a keyboard and mouse rath??er than a gamepad. Quibbles like that don't damage the joy of exploring the universe they've created, though.

Outer Wilds proves there's still a sense of genuine adventure to be gained from games that commit to a set, fixed structure and design, rather than the kind of sprawling, endless expanses many contemporary titles set out to become. Playing it brought to mind my favorite bits of Dr. Seuss' Oh, The Places You'll Go...except with more of the sun exploding.

But Hello Games is stopping short of that term

At launch, No Man's Sky was a very lonely game. This functionally-infinite universe was so big that no one ever saw another player. Everyone was just an insignificant speck trying to b?arter with stubborn aliens.

As Hello Games fixed No Man's Sky, it got less lonely. Last summer's "Next" update implemented synchronous cooperative play. It went a long ways toward making No Man's Sky a better game. (It?? helps that the??re were a million other changes too.)

No Man's Sky's next major update goes one step further. Hello Games says that the "Beyond" update "includes a radical new social and multiplayer experience which empowers players everywhere in the universe to meet and play together." This is dubbed No Man's Sky Online.

It sounds like an MMO, but the developer is stopping short of that designation. Hello Games explains "We don't consider No Man's Sky to be an MMO -- it won't require a?? subscription, won't contain microtransactions, and will be free for all existing players." It really does seem like an MMO though. It's turning the game into something that's massively multiplayer and online. Hello Games is l??ikely ducking the term because it wants to make its monetization intentions crystal clear.

That's just one part of No Man's Sky's plans for Beyond. There are three pillars supporting this update. Hello Games will talk about th??e other two in the near future, a little closer to Beyond's release which is currently set for sometime this summer.
