Cross-progress isn't implemented just yet

For those of you who are planning to crack into Spelunky or Spelunky 2 for the first time on Nintendo Switch, I'm excited and nervous for you. I hope your runs go well! The new ports launched today on the eShop, and while I haven't tested them out, the early imp?ressions inclu??ding chatter about a smooth frame rate sound encouraging.

Some players have noticed a cross-progress / data-sync feature in the Switch version of Spelunky 2, but it doesn't appear to work yet. What's it do? And when is it coming?

Responding to questions in a Reddit AMA, Blitworks' Guillermo NWDD said that the de??velopers "plan to include this feature on PC in the next update, which will be comin??g after the next patch lands on Nintendo Switch (1.23)." It's being tested right now.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=bumh8QemYWk

Rather than move your save data from one platform to the next (in this case, from Spelunky 2 on PC to?? Nintendo Switch), this feature will "merge" your progress.

"So for example, by using cross-progress you can unlock an achievement ??on Steam and get i?t on Switch or vice versa," according to Guillermo. "Some stats such as runs finished are also merged, but the merge isn't perfect, so if you kill four enemies on Switch and then three on Steam, it would only show four (depending on the order of the syncs)."

The developer also explained that while they can't go into specifics due to NDAs, Spelunky 2 won't get the progress-sync feature on PlayStation, so this will be Switch/PC only.

Elsewhere in the AMA, Spelunky designer Derek Yu expressed a desire to, at some point, do a physical edition. It's on the table. "I'd love to do it and it's great t?o hear that there's interest for it," he said. "It just takes time to set up, which we haven't had a lot of this year. Now that the game is out on Switch we can look into it more."

The question-submitter suggested a Switch double-pack, which I think would be per?fect.

Double-dip worthy for sure

Whether you're just in for the original Spelunky on Nintendo Switch or you're up for Spelunky 2, either way, August 26 is the date to remember. That's when both games launch on Switch in North America, Europe, and Australia, with release info for "other regions" coming soon, acc??ording to develo??per Mossmouth. It's been a bit of a wait.

The first Spelunky will cost $9.99 on Switch, while the sequel is set at $19.99.

//youtu.be/Eg04DlARo6Y

Even if it's given us a lot of grief with the ever-present potential for run-ruining traps and chain reactions that can feel criminal, we still hold Spelunky pretty near and dear around here. Those moments of clawing your way out of ?jams to overcome the odds ar?e blissful.

I would say that if you're coming in totally fresh to this whole roguelike platformer craze, the original Spelunky is, in my eyes, essent??ially perfect. Almost a decade later, I mean?? it.

Spelunky 2 is also fantastic as a sort of greatly expanded and remixed take on the same format, but initially, it can be divisive as a "sequel." It pushes back on some of the tried-and-true habits of Spelunky 1-obsessed players, and that can feel weird at first, but further in it'll click, and it reaches crazy heights with its branching structure. That said, since its initial PS4 and Steam launches last year, Spelunky 2 has become less prickly.

If you happen to be reading this article on or after August 26 and you're looking for Spelunky pointers, we've got two big guides: a monster of a two-parter for the original Spelunky written by Destructoid reader Corduroy Turtle, and a big list of tips I assembled for Spelunky 2. Enough game-changing updates have come out that some of my advice is outdated (namely, a certain boss fight whose whole flow was overh?auled), but much of that guide, especially the less-spoilery starter tips and alternate routes, will still resonate.

I'm stoked knowing folks?? are about to step into this worl??d of hurt for the first time.

Duos and Trios will also be limited-time modes

Fall Guys Season Five drops tomorrow, July 20, with a host of new challenges to overcome. And while you're bouncing and falling all over the place, you can do it in style, as a Spelunky-themed bean.

Mediatonic revealed its plans for Season Five today, which it had previously teased was going to be jungle-themed. The update will add six ne??w rounds, with plenty ?of new obstacles to avoid like inflatable frogs, jumping pads, and aggressive pink rhinos. It looks like chaos, but like a fun sort of chaos.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKzQ4D5xqNY

Also included in this season's Fame Path are a bunch of new skins, one of which is a crossover with indie jungle adventure Spelunky. As shown in the reveal of the Pass today, there's the recognizable Spelunky protagonist in bean form as an unlockable cosmetic, as well as some other fun costume parts like a tropical tre?e.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoPVmIMdnQY

There was also a new cinematic trailer shown, which doesn't just introduce the fun obstacles and rounds arriving with this season, but also ends in a weird, conspiratorial twist in the vein of Fortnite. Is there Fall Guys ??lore? Are we going to discover some dark secret about what's been going on, all along, with these falling bean fellows and their wacky antics? Who is this m??ysterious observer?

Either way, I'm kind of intrigued. I burned out on Fall Guys after some time, but some new rounds and a new look to freshen ev?erything up might be what I'm looking for. Plus, Duos and Trios—which are apparently arriving as limited-time modes this season—might be a good way to still team up with friends while queueing. Though I guess that means no more dunking them into the dip like I do in free-for-all.

Fall Guys Season Five goes live tomorrow, July 20.

Oh, it's Spelunky

Even now Spelunky is a polarizing game. Some claim it's one of the best in the genre, others think it doesn't do anything specia?l and has been over-hyped since launch. But as someone who wiled away many hours with my wife in its dark perilo??us caverns, I fall squarely in the former camp.

Outside of a brief tutorial, Spelunky is very much a h??ard knocks type of game. Everything from fall distance to enemy patterns to item arcs are learned intuitively, and discovering some of the game's more esoteric Easter eggs without the use of a guide or stream is a special kind of reward. It has its issues, but it's something that I'm going to play for years on end, and eventually show my future kids??.

Naturally I was keen on giving this Noclip documentary an hour of my life, as it chronicles the journey of creator Derek Yu from an intrepid freeware developer to a worldwide phenomenon. It's odd how closely my career has been entwined with his, as Aquaria (his first big award winning project) was one of th?e first games I covered when I started i??n this industry.

Remarkable feet?

Spelunky players are always finding new and interesting ways to torture themselves. Let's face it -- besting Spelunky's unforgiving randomly generated mazes is an accomplishment unto itself. Learning to do it with your feet is ?a completely different l??evel of insane dedication.

But, that's what one Twitch streamer did to celebrate getting to 1,000 followers -- he mastered Spelunky's direc??tional controls on a dance pad, and used a controller for the buttons. With the assistance of an early jetpack, he marched right through the game and dropped Olmec to his death.

Not to??o shabby for so??mething that the majority of players couldn't do with their hands.

One minute and fifty five seconds -- that's the new world-record any% time for Spelunky set by Pibonacci. It hurt?s my brain thinking about how many runs must have happened before?? the right conditions presented themselves for this to unfold.

'Oh man, I'm going to feel really bad when I throw this run'

A Plasma Cannon in 1-1. A jetpack in 1-2. This is the start of a remarkably fortunate Spelunky run.

It's a run that will, at least for the foreseeable future, remain at the top of the leaderboards. Bananasaurus Rex, known as being the first person to complete a solo eggplant run, has set the new world record score: $3,105,850.

This went down live on Twitch earlier today and when I tuned in at around the six-hour mark, he was only just destroying the last remaining bit?s of the City of Gold. If there's o??ne word I'd use to describe this playthrough, it's thorough. The sheer skill of Rex shines through in his calm, collected style of play despite all of the obstacles and pressure he faced. Well done!

There's a host of bug fixes too but you'll still suck at the game

As you might know, Spelunky has been my videogaming obsession over the last six months or so, therefore it's no surprise that I'm actually keen to read through patch notes for the game. Version 1.4 has gone live?? and the big addition is the new Pro HUD mode ??that greatly reduces the size of things like the health meter, bombs, and ropes and adds new timers to show how long your run has been.

That's something people have been clamoring for as the HUD and item counters were quite obtrusive, especially when you couldn't see one of those dammed spiders about to drop on your head. I've no interest in streaming my games (y'all don't want to see a semi-sober Scottish guy be really bad at Spelunky,? do you?) but after a quick test run I c??an say that I really like the new minimalist HUD.

Of course there's assorted bug fixes and updates, almost all of which I've never even realized that were a potential problem. Did the skeleto??ns really need to make a different?? sound when you jump on them? Not really but there doesn't seem to be much here that's going to make a difference to how I play; now here's to another 190 hours!

Bananasaurus Rex does the impossible

It's been some time since we've posted a Spelunky run on Destructoid but, I think you'll agree, this one is worth seeing. If you're familiar enough with the game to know about the eggplant -- it's earned by sacrificing a Mystery Box on an alt??ar -- and that it can turn the the true boss, King Yama, into an "eggplant monster," you know how remarkable this video is.

Making it to hell and surviving long enough to reach King Yama's domain is a true challenge. Then there's doing all of that, but with a second player carrying the eggplant. I can't even fathom it. In fact, I was unaware that this feat was even achievable alone -- it is, as you'll see at about the 39-minute mark. Bananasaurus Rex has pulled off the impossible, and he did it with only a single health point remaining. Now that's how you play Spelunky.

[Thanks, Tobiichi]

Today's Spelunky Challenge!

Only recently, after months and months of playing Spelunky, was it brought to my attention that angering Kali can have truly dire consequences. Yes, destroying her altar -- intentionally or otherwise -- will make a bu?nch of spiders come after you. Most of us realize this,? I'm sure.

But if you take down a second altar? (Or, even worse, a third?) You'll be stuck with a ball and chain, as shown in today's episode of The Daily Spelunk. This probably goes without saying, but I'd advise against fighting a horde of starved? piranhas when you've got something so heavy strapped to your leg. I regret nothing.

Pugs for everyone!

[Want to know how a developer handled the PC version of a multiplatform game? Check out the PC Port Report for the full scoop.]

The original Spelunky, now known as Spelunky Classic, was a freeware PC title, but it was XBLA players that got th??e refined, enhanced version that most of us now think of when the game is mentioned. Left out in the cold, the PC Master Race wept openly, but those dark days are now behind us.

Spelunky is available on Steam, and the good news is that it's just as wonderful as the XBLA version, if not slightly better with the added Daily Challenges. You really have no reason not to don ??your fedora (this is one of the few occasions where it won't make you look like a twat), grab some rope, and delve into punishing underground realms filled with treasure and pugs.

Spelunky (PC, Xbox Live Arcade)
Developer: Mossmouth
Publisher: Mossmouth
Released: August 8, 2013

MSRP: $14.99
Rig: Intel i5-3570K @3.40 GHz, 8 GB of RAM, GeForce GTX 670, and Windows 7 64-bit

If, for some inexplicable reason, you don't have a clue what Spelunky is, then allow me to get you up to speed. Spelunky is part of the new wave of not-quite-roguelikes-but-certainly-difficult games that a plethora of indie developers have been churning out for the last coup?le of years. It has the classic roguelike trop??es of permadeath, lots of one-hit kills, devious traps, and randomly generated levels, but it also owes a lot to Metroidvania-style games, with its focus on platforming and side-on exploration.

Like a diminutive Indiana Jones, you'll traverse these deadly, underground levels in search? of loot, gaudy golden idols, and damsels in distress -- of the male, female, and canine variety -- but there's only really one key goal: ?don't bloody die. If you do succumb to an early death, you'll start right back at the beginning with only your (hopefully) increased skill to potentially make the next run more successful.

I find myself pretty bored of the soundtrack, and the art design, while cute, does very little for me -- but it's the hunt for gold and the desperate scramble to the inviting, gaping exit that keeps me coming back for more. Spelunky is the sort of game that inspires gamers to tell stories filled with close-calls and and embarrassing deat??hs, or to share hints and tips so that others might not fall foul of arrow traps or yeti attacks.

If I'd written this a couple of days ago, I would be lamenting the fact that, despite how long its taken to port this over to PC, there's a dearth of options for a platform that's all about customizing one's experience. Limited resolution options relegated those with a non-traditional setup to playing Spelunky in a resolution other than their screen's native one,?? but this oversight has thankfully been fixed. Feel free to play in any sort o??f configuration you want to.

There are only two control options: gamepad (I just used my PS3 controller) or keyboard. The mouse doe?sn't get a look in beyond navigating the menus. I would have loved to see the mouse used to aim bombs, rocks, and ropes, but no such luck. My keyboard is getting a bit long in the tooth, and without the mouse it just feels a bit imprecise compared to my PS3 controller.

The one addition to Spelunky that elevates this new version beyond a mere port is the D??aily Challenge mode. Every day, a new random map is generated for mass consumption, so you can finally compare your spelunking skills with pals. This new, competitive bonus feels right at home in a game that already has a deathmatch mode, and leaderboards will ensure that you feel suitably ashamed when you're at the bottom of your friends list.

There're already a great many videos of folk attempting to master these challenges, so players can see first hand how others fared. It's going a long way to fostering a sense of community, as sh??ared experi??ences have a tendency to do.

Daily Challenges and finally being able to enjoy Spelunky at 60+ frames per second instead of the original 30 makes this port the best way to experience the game, but there's not a whole lot of ?reasons to download it if you've already got the Xbox Live Arcade version. For those without it, however, you owe it to yourself to pick it up immediately.

A welcome addition

When Spelunky comes to Steam on August 8, it will include an exciting, exclusive new feature known as The Daily Challenge to PC. It's pretty straightforward: a fresh level is generated at random each day that's the same for everyone, but the twist is we only get a single run to cl??imb the level's leaderboard. When you die, that's it for the day. Better make it count!

Leading up to launch, independent developers Douglas Wilson (J.S. Joust) and Zach Gage (SpellTower), who are credited as suggesting the idea to Mossmouth, will be streaming Daily runs for a week starting July 28. Other notable streamers like Nothernlion and MANvsGAME will be joining t?hem to help promote the game's Steam release.

For as much time as I continue to sink into Spelunky, I've never been big on the competitive aspect of the game in ter??ms of leaderboar??ds. That changes in August. Come at me, readers.

The classic freeware version of Spelunky was and still is worth playing on PC, b?ut the revamped, once-exclusive Xbox Live Arcade reboot is where it's at if you're looking for some of the best cooperative play of the past decade. Thankfully, it shouldn't be much more of a wait.

And plenty of bug fixes for good measure

One of my goals for this winter break has been to get to hell and back in Spelunky, but I've been continually putting the task off. With the arrival of the game's first title update on Xbox ??Live Arcade, I'm running out of excuses here. The focus is on fixing bugs, of which there are surprisingly quite a few, but there's some key gameplay changes as well:

  • Significant price changes to shop items (mostly reductions for weaker items).
  • Flip-hanging a one-tile wide pit while carrying an item will not cause the item to hit you anymore.
  • Critters now have lowest item pick up priority. (You will always pick up items that are in front first.)
  • Items now take player velocity into account when determining whether to do damage from velocity.
  • Tiki Men in dark levels now carry torches instead of boomerangs.
  • Caveman villages cannot spawn in dark levels any more.
  • Sceptre would kill you if you had it pressed up against a wall.
  • Sceptre will not target harmless critters anymore.
  • Hired hands were grabbing items for sale.
  • Spectacles are now much less useless.
  • Plasma Cannon flies straighter.
  • Magma men will now ignite bombs and light torches.

While you can read over the full patch notes yourself, the highlights are fixes for various crashes, the Mattock resetting its "use" count after reaching a new level, and beating a level quickly not preventing the next from being dark. Between all of the patch's improvements, my biggest issues with the game have been addressed. Designer Derek Yu also says there will be more exciting Spelunky news next year. Hmm, I wonder what that could be.

What's better than playing an awesome indie game? How about playing an awesome free indie on the browser of your choosing, whenever you want to! A port of Spelunky has just hit broswers everywhere.

Darius Kazemi took the original GameMaker PC version of Spelunky, and in just three hours time converted it to HTML 5. Now, the port isn't without its issues, and Kazemi is the first to point them out. Currently sound has not been implemented yet, ??some of the graphical effects need?? to be redone and scores cannot be saved. But, all things considered, Kazemi has done an amazing job on the port, especially for only three hours of work.

If you've been meaning to hop on XBLA and download the trial for Spelunky, or just feel like trying out the Derek Yu classic while you're at work or school, now is the perfect time.

Derek Yu's Spelunky made a name for itself as a freeware release years ago. Adapting concepts from roguelikes such as randomize?d levels and permanent death (lots and lots of permanent death), it uses a familiar 2D platformer base to offer gameplay that is both intrinsically enjoyable and always interesting.

To be frank, Spelunky could have been halfheartedly released on Xbox Live Arcade with only the most basic of features included, and I would have likely adored it. Instead, this version adds a new soundtrack, a fresh art style, support for cooperative play, and a ridiculous deathmatch mode, among other things.

It's as refres??hing a game now as it was back then.

Spelunky (Xbox Live Arcade)
Developer: Mossmouth
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Release: July 4, 2012
MSRP: 1200 Microsoft Points

In Spelunky, your goal is to navigate through what start out as rather traditional cave tunnels, collecting treasure and saving damsels in distress (or pugs -- seriously, there's an option for that) along the way. Of course, it wouldn't be a proper adventure without snakes, bats, spiders, arrow traps, spikes, and the like getting in your way. Technically, all you need to do is not die, but loot certainly won't hurt.

Given the game's aforementioned influences, not dying is easier said than done. A brief tutorial will catch you up to speed with the basics, from how bombs and ropes work to y?our uncanny ability to pick up (and naturally throw) ju?st about anything in the environment.

From there, Spelunky is absolute??ly unafraid of teaching you to pay attention to your surroundings. By playing recklessly, you run the risk of getting killed within a matter of seconds of starting up a round; there is a quick restart button for a reason. Don't let that scare you off, however -- this is a difficult game in the best possible way, with player deaths rarely ever feeling cheap or unwarranted.

Occasionally, there will be a remarkable chain reaction of events you couldn't possibly have seen coming, but those often end up being hilarious, if nothing else. This is the type of game where the challenge doesn't lessen -- you simply get better over time. That said, levels will sometimes be dark (one of a selection of random events), essentially requiring you to carry around a ??torch to reach the end. With so many things out to get you, this type of level can be annoying to encounter.

Spelunky review

While level layouts may be?? generated randomly, more often than not, they feel hand crafted. Bits and pieces will begin to feel familiar over time as you become accustomed to the world around you and its rules, but you're always kept o??n your toes, lest you get shot by that just-hidden-enough arrow trap.

It's the little details that come together so perfectly to create memorable moments. For instance, upon nabbing a Golden Idol, a large boulder will appear à la Raiders of the Lost Ark and utterly destroy everything in its path. It just so happens that, every so often, one of these boulders will come crashing into a shop, enraging its shotgun-wielding owner who then literally becomes convinced you are a terrorist. Chances are extremely high it will be this shopkeeper or one like him who ultimately kills you, possibly many levels later ... because they'll wait for you at ensuing level exits. And that's amazing.

Spelunky's influences, which span multiple genres and mediums, aren't exactly subtle, but the end result is a game world that feels unique, n??ot copied. It's particularly the kind of secret-filled backdrop those of you who have been gaming for decades will appreciate.

I could have looked up on a wiki the fact that one out of countless tombstones will read "Ash," not "RIP," and signal a hard-to-get shotgun buried underneath. But I didn't, and my stumbling upon it with no prior knowledge other than being a fan of The Evil Dead brought a smile to my face. (Don't worry, there are plenty of other, far more interesting secrets that will go unspoiled.) As some of the screenshots in this review suggest, it doesn't take very long at all for Spelunky to get weird.

Spelunky review

It's hard to tell exactly how much work went into adapting Spelunky for the Xbox 360 controller, but the controls feel wonderful. In fact, I don't have a single complaint. I'm similarly a fan of Derek Yu's new art style, which does away with charming pixel art for an aesthetic mor?e fitting of an HD console.

I have a feeling that the music, composed by Eirik Suhrke (Super Crate Box), will be the most divisive of all the big changes made in the move to Xbox Live Arcade. Which isn't to say he did a bad job -- far from it; check out the embedded video above, for example. It's just that George Buzinkai gave us some decidedly catchy songs for the original game. Personally, I really enjoy Suhrke's work and am of the opinion that, since the old game exists already, why not go all out for this new vers??ion? Simply put, both composers' soundtracks are entirely fitting for the two distinct art styles.

At this point, you must be wondering about the game's new offline deathmatch mode. I was skeptical going in, but you know what? Not only does it not feel tacked on, it's great; there's nothing quite like it. You and three others (which can optionally be AI bots) are placed into a tiny room filled with items and hazards. From there, it usually only takes 15 seconds before everyone is dead, or one lucky soul ha?s managed to somehow come out mostly unscathed.

The bots deserve a special mention, because they bring an unrivaled level of chaos to this mode. You have no idea. They jump around the screen frantically while whipping, shooting, or bombing anything and everything that moves. I had intended to only play a handful of rounds but ended up playing deathmatch for hours, completely losing track of time. Although it's an odd comparison to make, if you're a fan of old-school Bomberman -- for me, Super Bomberman 2 -- you'll probably dig this. It's conceptually similar to that, only far more hect??ic.

Spelunky review

There is also now the option to play Spelunky cooperatively with up to three other players. Unfortunately, it is, again, local multiplayer only. What makes co-op so terrific here is that it completely changes? the dynamic of the game. With more players to help, you don't need to be quite so cautious, and death isn't permanent. As such, people who don't frequently play ??games can still serve as good co-op buddies.

Upon perishing, you assume control of a little ghost who can fly around and push enemies and items with a blast of air. That might not sound like much, but it prevents you from becoming bored and does actually contribute in a meaningful way. For instance, I love to distract shopkeepers while m??y buddies loot their stores. In single-player, stealing is incredibly risky and often fatal. Here, it's easier to reliably pull off a quick heist with the right teamwork.

So long as one player makes it to the end of the level, you're golden. That surviving member will be able to find caskets on later levels which can be broken open to revive deceased players. With the ability to inadvertently harm others, co-op in Spelunky could have been extremely frustrating, but it isn't. Instead, it greatly complements single-player, making the fact that it's not playable online a real shame?.

Spelunky review

Some of you will have not needed to see this or any other review to know that Spelunky is well worth its $15 asking price. For everyone else, you owe it to yourself to, at the very least, go download the demo or even grab the original PC version to get a better understanding of what this game really is.

All of the additions for Xbox Live Arcade -- most notably, new graphics and sound, competitive multiplayer, and cooperative play -- come together to flesh out what was already impressive in its earlier stages. To avoid Spelunky is to miss out on an incredibly satisfying, ??well-designed game?.

It's been a long time coming, but the Xbox Live Arcade version of Spelunky finally has a release date. And it's somehow, miraculously, not very far away. Xbox Live's Major Nelson has posted a schedule of what's coming up for the service which lists the 1200-Microsoft Point game for Wednesda???y, July 4.

For those of you who missed out on the original free version, I'll kindly link back to Anthony Burch's thoughts on the matter for the twentieth time. Basically, Spelunky rules. This new version gives the game an updated look, four-person multiplaye??r, a new soundtrack, and more.

I'm trying to t?hink of other XBLA releases I'm anticipating more, but I'm failing miserably. Looks like my plans for the Fourth of Ju?ly have been made.
