Resident Evil Village is back in the number one spot of the UK Charts. Capcom's horror sequel clambered over Electronic Arts' Mass Effect Legendary Edition and also held off Nintendo's cartoony social title Miitopia in order to c?la?im the premier position once again.

Elsewhere in the Top Ten, the recent restock of physical PS5 products in the UK high street saw another round of sales for Insomniac Games' Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The web-slinger sits at number four ahead of Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, both of?? which have remained in the upper echelon since t?heir respective releases.

This week sees the launch of THQ Nordic's Biomutant, Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster, as well as Deep Silver's Maneater and NIS' World's End Club. It seems that, for the time being at least, Lady Di??mitrescu is set to retain her UK chart dominance. And who would deny her, frankly?

It's the Advanced Tech Suit

Insomniac has done a pretty good job of handling the Spider-Man franchise.

I mean, the first game ?made some waves, but it doesn't get enough credit for how breezy its open world is. It's the kind of sandbox you can finish in the time it takes to fully complete some other bloated open world romps, and that sort of restraint should be commended.

While some lament the fact that Spider-Man: Miles Morales was shorter, I celebr?ated it. Once again I found myself hitting that 100% completion mark and not stressing it. The injecti??on of free DLC costumes doesn't hurt either.

As of now, you can grab a new update for Miles Morales, which includes the classic?? free costume add-on. In this case it's the Advanced Tech Suit, amid "various fixes" for the game itself. Insomniac also flaunts "realistic muscle deformation for select suits," which is a PS5 exclu?sive feature.

Remember when Microsoft kept? touting "the power of the cloud" for basically every presentation? Well, now we just have the pow?er of new consoles to fuel things like realistic muscles.

Monster Hunter Rise debuts at #1

We have a brand new number one this week, as Capcom's Monster Hunter Rise inevitably debuted in the top spot of the UK Charts. The fantasy adventure, which has already sold an amazing four million copies worldwide, leads a streak of Top Ten Switch dominance.

The news of Monster Hunter Rise's success has been somewhat eclipsed, however, by a ridiculous sales spike for Nintendo's Super Mario 3D All-Stars. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the retro compendium saw its sales boosted by 276% last week, no doubt in anticipation of the title's de-listing, scheduled for tomorrow, March 31. The imminent removal of the title, heavily promoted by Nintendo, led to a rush of panic-buying, ultimately reinst??alling the title in the number two spot. Wha??t a fucking surprise.

The rest of the Top Ten is almost entirely Switch releases, with showings from Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Luigi's Mansion 3, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Almost every Mario or Mario-adjacent Switch release saw a sales increase this week, with only Electronic Arts' soccer sim FIFA 21 offering a combo breaker at number eight. Last week's number one, Supergiant's Hades, has dropped out of the Top Ten entirely.

Nintendo has been sent a clear message on how to fuel a global sales injection on not just one, but multiple releases at relatively short notice. As a result, we can probably expect The Big N, and perhaps even other publishers, to indulge in more Walt Disney-style "??vaulting" antics in the future.

Last night saw the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) hold its annual BAFTA Games Awards, which saw a cavalcade of excellent releases from 2020 line up in hopes of rec??eiving recognition from Britain's premier arts & media academy.

And when the curtain finally fell on the evening's festivities, Supergiant Games' Hades emerged with the heaviest trophy bag, having scooped a total of five awards in numerous categories. The fantasy dungeon-crawler took home the gongs for Artistic Achievement, Game Design, and Narrative, with actor Logan Cunningham bagging the Supporting Role award for his work voicing numerous underworld characters. Hades rounded out the night winning the coveted Best Game award - a string of deserved accolades f??or a brilliant release.

Despite having been nominated in a whopping 13 categories, Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part II only succeeded in taking home three awards: Best Animation, the public-voted EE Game of the Year, and actor Laura Bailey winning Leading Role for her excellent portrayal of dual protagonist/antagonist Abby Anderson. Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Horizons bagged Best Multiplayer and "Game Beyond Entertainment". Flying the flag for the little guys, Phobia Entertainment won Best Debut for their gooey body-horror title, Carrion.

Congratulations to all of the winners and the nominees. There was much to dislike about 2020 but, at the very least, it cannot be denied that our favorite pastime absolutely knocked? it out of the park with hit, after hit, after hit. Chec?k out the full list of winners below.

It's a good day to be a bad dude, as Zagreus, Theseus, Nyx, Dusa, and the rest of the Underworld's denizens have come strutting into the UK Chart scene. Last week saw Supergiant Games' Hades finally hit t??he Top 20 at number seven, thanks to the sexy-as-all-fuck roguelike getting a ??physical release on Nintendo Switch.

Hades joins a parade of Switch titles currently jamming up the Top 10. Both Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe retain their respective number two and number four positions from last week, while social sim Animal Crossing: New Horizons is once again back on top in the number one spot, no doubt brought about thanks to the title's anniversary celebrations and impending spring events. Super Mario 3D All-Stars is bringing up the rear at number nine.

Global phenomenon Minecraft is pulling double-duty this week, with its original world-building title at number eight and its subterranean spin-off, Minecraft Dungeons, sitting at number 10. PlayStation and Xbox platforms are represented by Sony's Spider-Man: Miles Morales at number three, Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto V at number five, and Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War - still shifting cop??ies an?d sitting comfortably at number six.

Anybody call for a web-slinger?

In an interesting turn of events, Insomniac Games' pseudo-sequel Spider-Man: Miles Morales ha??s clambered to the top of the UK Charts, just over four months after its initial November 2020 release.

Miles Morales' belated arrival at the No.1 position comes after the UK received a major restock of PS5 releases, with the next-gen version of the open-world adventure accounting for 90% of all Spider-Man sales over the past week. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, even if you discounted PS4 sales, our boy Morales would still have found himself in the top spot, usurping Nintendo's Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury after one full month in the premier position.

The PS5 restock also saw a sales boost for other older releases, with the PS5 edition of Warner Bros. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate returning to the Top 40 at number 18, and Ubisoft's Immortals: Fenyx Rising returning at number 14. It's still very much a Nintendo-led Top Ten, however, with over 50% of the division taken up by Switch releases including Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Ring Fit Adventure, Minecraft, and Super Mario 3D All-Stars - all of which will no doubt be joined by Capcom's incoming Monster Hunter Rise in just a matter of weeks.

Next month will see the first anniversary of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. That's one whole year of Nook Island shenanigans. And the Ninten??do Switch social sim has more than proven its staying power, once again returning to the number one spot on the UK Charts.

Since launch, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has dallied in and around the Top Ten, returning to the number one spot on numerous occasions throughout its first year of release, with many players openly noting how its cheerful and social nature has helped lift spirits during this miserable COVID-19 times. Nintendo continues to add seasonal updates and events in its cute fantasy world, and with Festivale just around the corner, this looks set t??o continue into spring and bey?ond.

Elsewhere in the charts, there is little to report. IO Interactive's murderthon Hitman 3 has already dropped out of the Top Ten, having spent one week in the premier position, and now sits just outside at number 11. The rest of the Top Ten is rounded out by the steady physical sales of Grand Theft Auto V, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, FIFA 21, and Switch releases such as Ring Fit Adventure and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, b?ringing a stagnant end to a very quiet January.

Agent 47 back with a bang

They say you can't keep a good man down - turns out that goes for relatively amoral men too. Agent 47 has stealthily crept his way into the top spot of the UK Charts, thanks to the release of IO Interactive's excellent sequel, Hitman 3, physically published by Square Enix.

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the eighth (just go with it) mainline entry in the long-running murderthon, Hitman 3 was the biggest-selling physical release in the UK last week, with the PS5 platform accounting for almost half of all sales. Speaking of PS5, Sony Interactive Entertainment's pseudo-sequel Spider-Man: Miles Morales also made a return to the Top Ten, web-slinging in at number four, while Demon's Souls made its return to the Top 40 at number 27.

Aside from these two releases, it was mostly business as usual. Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe occupy slots two and three respectively, while additional Switch releases, Ring Fit Adventure, Just Dance 2021, and Minecraft, nestle at the back half of the Top 10. The bro-tastic FIFA 21, Grand Theft Auto V, and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War all continue to see steady week-on-week sales.

Night City Higher

Night City's fascinating and dangerous world - inhabited by a cast of intriguing and amoral characters - has been providing an exciting experience for many Cyberpunk 2077 players. However, the slew of undeniable controversies surround CDPR's development process and the title's eventual launch - from technical, critical, employee and consumer standpoints - has gone some way to damping the fire for what was one of gaming's most-hyped releases ever.

Of no surprise, Cyberpunk 2077 debuted in the No.1 spot of this week's UK Charts, becoming the second biggest UK retail release of 2020 - beaten out only by Electronic Arts' soccer sim FIFA 21. While this is an achievement, these numbers generally reflect the sales of the PS4 and Xbox One editions of Cyberpunk 2077, the very same editions that CDPR is currently offering refunds for, due to their shaky technical performance.

Elsewhere in the charts, other blockbuster titles such as Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Sony's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Valhalla continue to jockey for both position and those all-important Holiday sales. Over in Nintendoland, sales continue for Switch releases Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and perennial Xmas seller Just Dance 5.

Performance RT mode is a great compromise

I'm starting to wish I hadn't burned through my New Game+ playthrough of Spider-Man: Miles Morales so quickly (and deleted the game to free up some precious storage space on my PS5). Insomniac Games updated Miles Morales with an alternate graphics mode – Performance RT – that ticks the right boxes.

If you wanted to see cool ray-traced reflections but you weren't willing to play Miles Morales at 30 frames per second, there's now an "alternate version of the 60 frames per second 'Perf??ormance' mode" that adds "ray tracing by adjusting the scene resolution, reflection quality, and pedestrian density."

In other words, Performance RT is trying to give the best of both worlds – fidelity and performance. If you can live wit?hout 4K (and I believe plenty of us easily can), this should be a great option.

There's no confirmation that Spider-Man Remastered will get a Performance RT update, but I hope so.

The latest UK Chart report sees most of the industry's biggest releases jostling within the Top Ten, as the UK's current COVID-19 lockdown legislation put the dampers o??n the lucrative Black Friday sales, (which Britain also adopted because Capitalism, yo).

Electronic Arts' football simulator FIFA 21 has once again returned to the number one spot, pushing out Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War after just one week. Nintendo saw its Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe climb to numbers three and four respectively, while Square Enix's stumbling Marvel's Avengers has managed to push back into the Top Ten at number seven. Rounding out the charts at number 10 is Ubisoft's perennial holiday seller Just Dance. 'Tis the season, after all.

The biggest single-week drop goes to Nintendo brawler Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which slipped from number six to number 20, with a 61% sales decline. Given the current state of the UK high street and the rapid de???cline in physical sales, these rise and falls are becoming ever more irrelevant as an expression of a title's success or failure - but it's still an achievement to see your title hit the coveted number one spot, only encouraging further sales.

The next-gen holiday season is officially underway

After weeks, even months of stagnation, the UK Charts have finally been shaken up with debuting hardware PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Now available on UK shores, the new consoles and their respective releases have been battling it out in the Top Ten, with Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War coming out on top, at least for this week.

The '80s-set first-person shooter usurped Ubisoft's Viking adventure Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which drops to number four having spent only one week in the premier position. Sony's open-world pseudo-sequel Spider-Man: Miles Morales holds firm at number three, while Electronic Arts' endlessly selling FIFA 21 c??limbs back up the charts to roost at number two.

In regards to new releases, Epic Games phenomenon Fortnite returned to the Top Ten, thanks to a physical release of the DC Comics-themed bundle The Last Laugh. Nintendo's Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity only made a modest impact in regards to physical sales, debuting at number six. For some reason, given all the great titles on offer this week Ubisoft's Watch Dogs: Legion managed ?to climb back up the Top Ten, and ??sits at number seven.

With th??e UK mired in lockdown for the foreseeable future, retailers will no doubt be hoping that online sales will bring the lucrative Christmas cash rolling in. Given the proven ongoing trend in digital sales, this holiday season may prove to be the phy??sical gaming industry's last hurrah.

Spider-Can, Spider-Can, does whatever a can...can

I was able to finish Spider-Man: Miles Morales without so much as a single meaningful glitch, but now that it's available at mass market, a few players have been uncovering some fairly es??oteric and frankly Rockstar-esque bugs.

Over on The Twitter-Verse, folks have figured out a way to turn the titular Miles Morales into common household objects, like bricks or trash cans. By colliding with the wall, you can potentially turn into one of those things and swing around as the object. He's a menace, I tell you! JJJ can't even see him coming now: this is stealthier than Miles' actual stealth powers. This is galaxy brain level Metal Gear Solid cardboard box sneaking.

Like Microsoft embraced Craig, so too could Sony and Insomniac embrace this glitch. Making a "brick" outfit as free DLC would be a pretty grea??t move and an easy way ?to poke fun at the situation. It's already in the game!

In the first major shakeup in months, the UK Charts welcomed a fistful of brand new releases into its ranks, all vying for the coveted number one spot. When the dust had settled, in what could be seen as something of an upset, Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Valhalla beat out Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War to become the best-se?ll??ing physical launch of the week.

Ubisoft's head-cleaving open-world adventure debuted at number one, with the rockin '80s Cold War settling for number two. In third place was Sony's pseudo-sequel Spider-Man: Miles Morales. PS5 releases Demon's Souls, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Godfall also debuted at numbers six,?? 13, and 16 respectively. Quite a feat considering the new hardware hasn't even launched on these shores yet!

Once we are past the typically lucrative holiday period, things may start to get a little tougher for the physical sales charts. With a year-on-year shift toward online sales; cheaper, disc-less hardware, and the ongoing string of high-street lockdowns, 2021 and the ninth consol??e generation are set to very much be the era of the digital download.

Photo modes are a great tool that developers create so players can leave their own artistic mark on a game. Sometimes it's the simple ability to take a snapshot of the in-game action. Other times, it's far mo?re nuanced.

Insomniac has developed a photo mode for Spider-Man: Miles Morales that greatly expands on the photo mode for the original Spider-Man on PS4. The most impressive addition is light manipulation. Insomniac says "You'll be able to place and control up to three lights and adjust height, distance, color, light intensity, color intensity, spread and softness." There's also a setting for controll?ing the sun and ambient l??ighting.

Another feature that might spice up your photos is the ability to change suits from inside the photo mode. Of course, there are also new stickers and photo frames. Insomniac delivered one of my all-time favorite developer clapbacks via a sticker when it launched photo mode for PS4's Spider-Man:

How many more Spider-People are there? Not enough

Back in 2018, I talk?ed about how much Spider-Man, as a character, meant to me.

It sounds hyperbolic, but fiction can absolutely get people through some tough times, especially if that character is particularly relatable. Okay, maybe not Spider-Man himself, but Peter Parker sure gets the job done.

The thing is, there are lots of different versions of Spider-Man that people can relate to. Now, we just got another one in Miles Morales — and lik??e ?the first time around, Insomniac did its job once again.

Although Peter is a part of the intro mission, this is very much Miles' story: as the former is whisked away to Europe fairly quickly with his significant other? and stealth-sequence expert Mary Jane Watson. New York only has one Spider-Man in it for the time being.

From the start, it does a really good job of bringing you in where you need to be. It's not an origin per se (the ending of the first game took care of that); it's more like a Batman Year One tale after he has some of the toys. If you want, you can get a quick recap of the original, but it's not wholly necessary since, again, this is an isolated story that involves Miles, his family and circle of friends, and new villains. Beyond a few Easter eggs, you c??an also go straight to this version and be fine.

Over time I started to realize how different Miles Morales really was. Sure it has a lot of the same framework mechanically (both in and out of combat), but this is a much more personal story. ??It fits the game perfectly and allows it to step out of the shadow of Peter Parker, with a large focus on the people close to Miles that most players haven't quite met yet. The Christmas time period and wintery sparkle of the city also help add to the feeling that this is not a copy-and-paste? job.

My most beloved element of the game though has to be Miles himself. As most Spider-Verse film fans know, he's quite the character, with his own insecurities and demons he has to reckon with in addition to his heroic responsibilities. Insomniac manages to showcase his personalit??y not just with the narrative, but with subtle in-game animations too. Sometimes Miles will struggle with an attack or even look off-balance. He's also willing to be heroic out of the costume, too.

Seeing as this is a PS5 game after all, it's also important to talk about all of the next-gen goodies. The big (and I can't stress this enough) thing that stands out to me way more than the visual upgrades is the load time situation: or, lack thereof. The SSD effect is real, with the game taking mere seconds to load up or fast travel. There were times in the original where it was sometimes quicker to manually zip to a location as to not force a load — but in Miles Morales, he literally walks out of a fast-travel point in about a second. I hope the entire generation is this fast.

The visual options are slightly less impressive but totally workable, especially if you were fine with the situation in the original. Insomniac makes you choose between 30FPS and ray tracing or 60FPS, the latter of which provides a "4K picture from a lower resolution base." While native 4K/ray tracing/60 is ideal, the game is absolutely fine in eit??her setting, and the ray-tracing effects (including the puddles)?? look great.

Combat is still very smooth, with Insomniac nailing the agility and strength of the Spider-Man character in an action system that mostly emulates the original. Miles has two powers at his disposal that are important to note: a bio-electric shock ability (Venom Blast) and a camouflage skill. The former really reminds me of the neon aesthetic from inFamous: Second Son in all the best ways, how it pops when you're blasting a single target or unleashing an electric ??blast into a crowd.

Miles' camouflag?e, like most of ??its gaming ilk, is governed by a meter, which depletes as the ability is used or after you whack an enemy out of stealth. I'm sure some people will feel like camouflaging makes the stealth sequences easier, but they're also more fun as a result. Miles can speed through those portions of the game a little quicker than Peter, but you still have to maintain a degree of anonymity, lest you blow your cover.

Miles also sports four gadget??s (one of which is the classic web shooter) in tandem with his newfound skills, giving the whole game a welcome allure of familiarity. Insomniac did not have to reinvent the wheel here, so this approach is appreciated.

I'm nearly done with the review, but I felt compelled to answer a still-burning question for some: so what exactly is this game? I know it's been confusing. So the answer really is: "it's something like Uncharted: Lost Legacy."?? It's a shorter, roughly 10-hour (or less) campaign that can be stretched to 15 hours or so if you go for a 100% rating/Platinum trophy. Once that's in the bag, you can opt for a New Game+ run, which has its own unique unlocks in ?tow.

While you might want more, the benefit of this approach is that the game doesn't feel bloated nor does it overstay its welcome. The in-game challenges and collectibles never get out of? hand, and there's only two easy-to-follow currencies to juggle. I actually 100%ed it with gusto for this review because I was compelled to.

Just like Into the Spider-Verse, I was pleasantly surprised by Miles Morales. I came in fully expecting it to be a side story, but it was much more than that. If this is setting us up for Spider-Man 2 where both Miles and Peter are playable: I'm in.

Sony has produced a 30-second TV ad for Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and let me be perfectly succinct here: It gets the job done. It's devilishly simple. Just a lot of web-slingin' and ass-kickin'. That's what you want from a Spider-Man game and it's also what you want from a Spider-Man commercial.

Anyway, watching this will probably get you geared the hell up for next week. Seven more days until PS5 is here, and seven more days until a new Spider-Man game. Hell yes, it's the most wonder??ful time of the year.

A real stunner

Most of the time, character skins serve to change the aesthetic of just the character. Rarely, though, they change the aesthetic of the whole ??game.

Insomniac has confirmed that the suit from 2018's Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of the new skins in Spider-Man: Miles Morales. It's more than just a neat nod to the best piece of superhero media in years. It alters the flow of Spider-Man on PS4 and PS5.

That's because Insomniac has animated the suit to match the visual style of the film. Miles Morales' actions seem to run at 12 frames per second while the world around him runs at 60fps. That's what it looks like anyway, although I'm not sure it's completely faithful to the movie from a technical standpoint. Regardless, it has that crunchy feel to it that defined Into the Spider-Verse.

This is the second suit that will be a launch day bonus for Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The first is a white T.R.A.C.K. suit that was revealed back in September. The Into the Spider-Verse addition is a much more impressive effort. Both are immediately available for anyone who pre-orders on PS4 or PS5, but it's not exclusive content. They ??seem to also be unlockable for anyone who doesn't swing in with a pre-order.

Retroactive rewards

Insomniac's Spider-Man was pretty damn great. It was our choice for 2018's PS4 Game of the Year, a??nd we're hardly the only outlet to sling some hardware its way. Insomniac has a lot of trophies in the case after that showing.

Hey, speaking of trophies! Sony's running a contest for anyone who has managed to beat Spider-Man on PS4 and earn the "End Game" trophy for clearing the third act. Folks who meet that criteria can enter into a drawing for an exclusive Spider-Man: Miles Morales LEGO minifigure.

Here's what you have to do: Hit this page and opt into the contest once your PSN ID has that ?trophy unlocked. ??They're giving away 1,650 minifigs, so maybe you have a decent shot at winning. The contest closes on November 5 at 11:59pm eastern, but you have to have the trophy unlocked by October 29 at 11:59pm eastern. The promotion is only open to residents of the United States.

Getting one of these little guys would be a cool way to commemorate the launch of the PS5 and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. And I'm sure plenty of you have managed to already beat Spider-Man, p??robably two years ago. With great power comes neat tiny minifigs -- if you're lucky.

When it comes to Marvel's Spider-Man, developer Insomniac isn't the only one writing Miles Morales' story. This PS5 launch game is getting a prequel to provide some backstory.

Marvel has revealed that it's teaming up with Titan Books to publish a prequel novel to Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Titled Wings of Fury, this arc is being written by Slay author Brittany Morris. Here's the description: "Wings of Fury f??eatures Miles Morales coming to terms with what it means to be Spider-Man. A mix-up with the law leaves Miles questioning everything and when? Vulture and his accomplice Starling unleash experimental tech on Marvel's New York, Miles must decide what kind of hero he wants to be."

But words are hard and reading is for nerds. Maybe the officially licensed art book is more your speed. Spider-Man: Miles Morales -- Art of the Game is a hardcover coffee table book that includes "con??cept art and in-game renderings including characters, locations, tech, gadgets, Spider su??its and much more." Much easier on the brain.

Wings of Fury will launch on November 10, just a couple of days before the game. The art book is slated for February 2021. Images of both covers can be found in the gallery below. Swing on down there, that's a Spider-Man pun.

Will your save files carry?? over to PS5 in all cases? Unfortunately, there's not an easy or neat across-t??he-board answer to that question, and anxiety has only spread as developers share their specific plans.

We learned yesterday that Yakuza: Like A Dragon will not support PS4/PS5 cross-saves, but Spider-Man: Miles Morales – another prominent cross-gen game with a PS4 version and a PS5 versi?on – will.

A fan posed the question on Twitter and Insomniac came back with a ??simp??le yes.

In other words, if you get Miles Morales digitally on PS4, you can move over to PS5 whenever y?ou please. If you buy a physical PS4 ??copy, you'll just need to play on the PS5 model with a disc drive.

On a separate but related note that's probably worth reiterating right now, your progress in Spider-Man PS4 – as in, the 2018 game – will not carry over to 2020's Spider-Man Remastered on PS5. (Also, the remaster is tied to the Ultimate Edition of Miles Morales and that's a whole 'nother annoyance.)

Beyond shedding light on the save-file situation, Insomniac Games also opened digital pre-orders for Miles Morales today – if you pre-order, you'll get the T.R.A.C.K. suit, another bonus sui?t that hasn't been revealed yet, an "early unlock" of the Gravity Well gadget, and three extra Skill Points. Nothing wild.

The bonuses are similar to the ones in Spider-Man (2018), meaning you'll be able to get them in-game.

Someone take notes

Sony has offered complex information pertaining to its recent announcement of a PS5 remaster of Marvel's Spider-Man, including details regarding the various upgrade paths to the web-s?linger's acclaimed open-world adventure.

Speaking in a statement to Kotaku, Sony confirmed that there is no upgrade path that allows PS4 Spider-Man players to receive the new PS5 remaster for free. PS4 players can upgrade Marvel's Spider-Man to a PS5 version of Marvel's Spider-Man at no cost, but this is just a "standard" version of the game, and not the new PS5 remaster. With me so far?

PS4 Spider-Man players wishing to pick up the PS5 remaster will need to first purchase the upcoming Spider-Man: Miles Morales release, and then purchase a special "upgrade voucher" at the cost of an additional $20. Alternately, players can outright purchase the Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition on PS5 for $70, which includes both the PS5 remaster of Marvel's Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Sony has confirmed that there are "no plans" to offer a standalone release of the PS5 remaster. It's also worth a reminder that PS4 save files for the original Marvel's Spider-Man will not be compatible with the PS5 remaster.

The mixed messaging on Spider-Man: Miles Morales has been a bit of a mess.

First it seemed like a full-on sequel when it was presented, only to be walked back to a micro-adventure akin to an Uncharted spinoff. Then, Game Informer broke the news t??hat the PS5 editi??on would feature a remastered version of the original Peter Parker tale on PS4: only to have radio silence from Sony on ?the matter for m??onths.

Well, now, thanks to an unceremonious SKU listing on Sony's site, we now know that the "Ultimate Edition" of Miles Morales comes with the PS4 remaster, but there are a few provisos. Seemingly able to finally tell th??e public what's up, the Insomniac Twitter acco?unt clarified some things.

Firstly, PS4 save data will not transfer to the PS5 remaster, so you'll have to start all over. Next, the physical version of Miles Morales will not include the rema?ster on the disc. I?nstead, the remaster will be provided via a voucher download code. There are "no plans" to release the remaster in physical form at this time.

That's a whole lotta bad news! This last one is either good or bad depending on your perspective: the trophy list is separate. Oh, and the remaster is?? a completely separate icon/game on the PS5??'s UI. They could have clarified all this a while ago!

Delete, re-install, delete

As someone who has used SSDs (solid state drives) in just about every piece of hardware I own that's capable of it: in theory, the PS5's SSD should make for a more c??onvenient gaming experience.

But I take umbrage with the 825GB size. It's going to be a problem, very fast. This past week, Sony has been slowly unveiling new little details about the next generation, like the price of games (some are $70). Now we know a few file size?s for select titles.

In what is probably the flagship first-party game, Spider-Man: Miles Morales' Ultimate Edition will take up "a minimum of 105GB" of space. Note that this is the version with the re-released PS4 port on top of Miles' story (Miles' own game will command 50GB). As an aside, Demon's Souls has also been confirmed to take up 66GB of space. We are awaiting file sizes for Destructoid AllStars and Sackboy: A Big Adventure, which are ??the oth?er two games listed on Sony's storefront.

If the average Call of Duty is any metric to go by, the PS5's storage space is essentially "eight Call of Dutys." Constantly deleting and re-installing 100GB+ games is going to get real o??ld, real fast.

A few games are still set for PS4

Sony is obviously in the position of trying to sell new consoles to as many people as possible. However, when the PlayStation 5 launches on November 12 (pricing and release date plans are outlined here), Sony's not requiring that you own the new hardware to play some of the most highly-anticipated games??.

As part of a very beefy press release Sony sent immediately following this afternoon's PS5 stream, it's revealed that three games are coming to PlayStation 4 even though it wasn't necessarily expected. Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Sackboy A Big Adventure will all hit PS4 too when they launch.

Two of these will also serve as PS5 launch games. Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy both release on November 12 on new- and last-gen consoles. As part of all the Spider-Man details we got today, it seems as though Miles Morales has cross-buy functionality between the PS4 and PS5 versions. So, anyone who isn't all-in on a PS5 right away can buy Miles Morales, play it on PS4, and then eventually enjoy all the enhancements down the road a bit when they end up na?bbing a PS5.

Horizon is a bit more of an oddball case. Horizon Forbidden West won't launch until sometime in 2021. Still, it'll have a PS4 version even though Sony will be squarely focused on PS5 by then. Maybe this is a response to Xbox's policy that all its first-party games are cross-generational for the first few years? Whatever the logic, it's more good news for the non-early adop??ters.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales looks fluid, frantic, and fantastic – not that we were expecting anything less from Insomniac's follow-up. We saw our first full electrified combat sequence – set a year later, in Harlem, as the Tinkerer leads an army – during this afternoon's PlayStation 5 Showcase event.

Miles Morales will be a $50 purchase on PS5 and PS4 (you only need to buy it once), and on PlayStation 5, Insomniac is also releasing Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered with all of the DLC included.

According to the team, "art assets have been completely updated to take advantage of the PS5 console's horsepower. You'll see better-looking characters with improved skin, eyes, hair, and facial animation (including our new, next-generation Peter Parker). You'll also see ray-traced reflections and ambient shadows, improved lighting, more pedestrians and vehicles stretching further into the distance, and the same optional performance mode offered on Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, allowing you to finally play the game at a targeted 60fps frame rate. We'll be supporting near-instant loading, 3D audio, and the DualSense controller's haptic feedback. Lastly we're adding three amazing new Sp??ider-Man suits, new photo mode features, and even new trophies for those of you looking to Platinum the game all over again."

Miles is 'his own Spider-Man'

While we wait for an inevitable (and much-needed) deep dive into Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Insomn?iac has shared a clean-as-he??ll new screenshot of the spin-off game and let out a few more details.

Miles Morales is "a full arc for Miles Morales that started in Spider-Man," creative director Brian Horton told EW. "We really are completin?g this hero's coming of age in our game. It is a complete story."

He added that once the developers got rolling, "we realized that, with a little bit more of a compact storytelling style, we could tell a very emotionally impactful story that would fit really well as an experience that would take Spider-Man and [Miles Morales] and do justice to this character."

As we gleaned from the short reveal trailer, it's set in winter – a year after Spider-Man's story – and "Miles' Harlem home is on the verge of being torn apart by a war between an energy corporation and a criminal organization armed to the teeth with advanced tech," according to the publication.

There's talk of invisibility and bioshock capabilities, training sessions with Peter, and Insomniac's characterization overall – one of the high points of the last game. "What I think is really compelling about Miles as a character is he has friends that he could actually let into his world – his human world and his Spider w?orld," said Horton. "He's a little different in the way he approaches it."

As for where Spider-Man fits in with the wider Marvel video game landscape, "Each game is in the? Marvel universe, but they're in their own reality, if you will," according to Marvel Games VP & head of cre??ative Bill Rosemann. "Currently, our plan is to keep each game set in its own Marvel universe."

Thank goodness for that.

What is the marketing campaign for this game?

How doe??s Sony sell people on one of the most wildly successful PlayStation exclusives featuring one of the most wildly famous and iconic comic book heroes? By confusing them! Very thematic! Just like Myste??rio.

We already suffered from mixed messaging when Sony appeared to debut Spider-Man: Miles Morales as a full sequel; then had to very quickly walk everything back. Now, it seems as if they may have undersold the game out of the gate. According to a writeup in Game Informer magazine (as spotted by Reddit member 77good123), Miles Morales will include a "remastered version of Insomniac's Spider-Man [PS4] that takes full advantage of the PS5 ha??rd??ware." Record scratch: whaaaaat.

While a lot of people assumed this was coming (Sony touted a Spider-Man remaster as one of the first PS5 tech demos), it's strange that this wouldn't be the upfront message right inside of the showcase it was presented in. Insomniac has clarified that Miles Morales is a standalone game,?? but that doesn't prevent it from being bun??dled with a separate remaster.

We've reached out to Sony for clarification on the matter, because anything is possible with this game. At this point we are t??reating it as a rumor.

Likely along with a 'better visual' 4K mode

As we've established, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, launching in the fourth quarter on the PS5, seems to be akin to an Uncharted: Lost Legacy or inFamous: First Light pseudo-sequel. But now Insomniac is drip-feeding a bit more information as time goes on, most notably, wha??t we can expect out of the game's performance.

You may recall that a tech demo of Spider-Man running on the PS5 was one of the best things Sony used to boast about their new console, and that work is paying off based on a new tweet from Insomniac. The developer shared this morning that on PS5, Miles Morales will support a 4K/60FPS "performance mode."

What does this mean? Well, it seems as if the tweet implies that 4K/60FPS is the standard for the game, but also possibly confirms an additional "4K/30FPS" mode that involves greater details like better lightning (and maybe a bit of all the Ray Tracing effects we've been hearin??g so much about). It's unclear for now (and we've reached out to Sony for clarification), but 60FPS at the v?ery least as a "performance" concession is good news for action fans.
