Believe it or not, it's been almost a year since Payday 3 came out. The game has gone through proper turmoil in these twelve months, and Starbreeze aims to celebrate that it's finally on the right path with a huge QoL update, the highlight of which is the server bro??wser.

Part 2 of Payday 3's big anniversary update is now slated to hit the game on October 30, and it will include a whole host of improvements, such as the aforementioned server browser. While this isn't even remotely as flashy of an addition as Part 1's new heister, minigun, and ass?orted cosmet??ics, it???? is far more important for the long-term health of the game and a sign of things to come.

Payday 3 celebrates its first anniversary with a server browser, cross-platform VoIP, UI improvements, and more

Payday 3's October 30 update is a celebration of sorts over how t?he game is now headed by Starbreeze's A??lmir Listo and Andreas Penninger. Mostly, it focuses on crucial quality-of-life improvements, but it also sets the stage for a revamped and reworked Year 2 of Payday 3. Players can expect all of the ??following boons in this update:

  • Server browser with optional filtering features
  • Cross-platform VoIP and text chat implementation
  • Improved UI (though no specifics as to what, exactly, is being improved)
  • Host kick functionality
  • New Twitch drops (masks, etc.)
  • Halloween-themed masks and assorted cosmetics

Starbreeze developers also held a neat little AMA over on Reddit. For example, we now know that there are plans to massively expand upon the existing weapon? customization system, including laser/targeting modules, cross-weapon attachments, drum magazines, and even Overkill weapon tuning.

Those who haven't kept up with Payday 3 over the past year may be interested in looking into the special Year 1 edition of the game. As its title betrays, it includes almost all of the premium content released for the gam?e over the past 12 mont??hs, including the base game, four major DLC bundles, and a few minor extras. Decent value all in all, though I won't blame you if you're still on the fence about this whole business.

Payday 3 is, after all, yet to prove that it's got the mojo its immediate predecessor had. From my point of view, the new title enjoys superior baseline gameplay. It has greater potential for long-term development, but the questionable choices made before its release and as part of Year 1's re-christening of the game are still a tad fresh. If all goes well wit??h Part 2 of the game's first anniversary update, though, Starbreeze will have firmly stepped onto the right track.

After the reasonably successful Syntax Error DLC, Payday 3 players can already look forward to a big new update that's on the horizon. The aptly titled Fear & Greed DLC represents the first half of Payday 3's first anniversary content?? drop, and honestly, it's looking mighty fine ind??eed.

Set and primed to release on September 16, the first half of Payday 3's anniversary content update includes the Fear & Greed DLC and a fancy batch of free goodies. The obvious highlight is the awesome new Overkill weapon: the M135 Minigun, but those who shell out for the DLC proper have a lot more to look forward to. To celebrate the occasion and get some hype going, Starbreeze has cooked up a brutal new gameplay trailer showing off the ins and outs of Fear & Greed. Or, at least, some of them.

Payday 3's first anniversary is all about that Fear and Greed

The first part of Payday 3's first anniversary update consists of the Fear & Greed DLC? and the free co??ntent update that's coming to all owners of the base game. The paid DLC is likely to be priced at about $12, as its predecessors have been, and it'll include:

  • the Stock Exchange heist
  • 3 new weapons, including the SPAS-12 and Desert Eagle variants (but excluding the free minigun)
  • the Tailor Pack, including 4 new masks, 4 new suits, and 4 new pairs of gloves

The free batch of content is admittedly humble in ?comparison:

  • Houston - new playable Heister
  • M135 Minigun Overkill weapon
  • new masks
  • new Twitch drops

Part 2 of Payday 3's anniversary, on the other hand, is slated for an October release, and it's supposed to include a wealth of QoL improvements. Some examples include the server browser, proper in-game VOIP, and a reworked user interface. We'll have to wait to see what comes of Part 2 proper, though, because the limelight is currently shining onto the Fear & Greed DLC for the time being.

Obviously, Payday 3 has had a rough time reaching the heights of its predecessor. Slowly but certainly, though, Starbr??eeze has successfully recuperate??d the game's image, and there may be a brighter future ahead. The success of Fear & Greed is pivotal in this respect, as Payday 3 does not currently have any future paid or free batches of content announced, and the community is unsure what's going to happen with it next. For comparison, Payday 2 enjoye??d a full decade's worth of active development, which its sequel never could've matched on day one.

Payday 3 was one of those games that was briefly hyped up, but then sank back down once it had been released. Much of that came from the issues that plagued the heist FPS threequel, but it seems developer Starbreeze?? is determined t?o make things right.

In a recent post on the Payday 3 website, the studio said it understands that "many of you aren’t satisfied with the game the way it is in its current state." Going forward, then, a "strike team of veteran developers" has been put together, formed from vario??us in-house departments.

The idea, it seems, is to tac??kle some of the game's biggest problems head-o??n with a dedicated bunch of developers. Currently, the team is "creating a plan" and "deciding what will shape the game into the heisting experience you expect."

I can hear the A-Team music in my head

Payday 3's insistence that players must be always online even when playing solo resulted in a lot of negative feedback from the community. The developer also released DLC �Syntax Error �just a few ??weeks?? after the main game was released.

Given that what fans really want is for the mai?n story they paid full price for to be in working condition, asking for additional money for new content could easily be seen as a bit?? of an insult.

As such, the new Payday installment is currently showing as "Mostly Negative" for recent Steam reviews, with "Mixed??" overall. Starbreeze says it will be revealing further details about plans for updates and improvements sometime in February.

Payday 3 has had a pretty rough start. With some notable issues from the moment the game came out, developer Starbreeze has been promising an update to address some major concerns. Now, after a number of delays, version 1.0.1 has launched.

If you've got the time to spare, you can check out the patch notes for the game, which lists a bunch of fixes, tweaks, and quality-of-life changes. Everything from the audio to the visuals to the UI have been given some TLC, so Payday 3 should be in a better state now.

However, for those waiting on word about a possible offline mode for the game, there's no mention of that here. That's something the developer is considering, but we don't know if?? or when it's likely to be implem?ented.

Why the long delay?

With trouble connecting to matches, general bugs, and the aforementioned lack of an offline mode, Payday 3 received a lot of negative feedback at launch.

Despite promising an upda?te, Starbreeze had?? to push it back a bit, describing the reasons for doing so as "long and complicated," with particular concerns about risks to player progression.

As of now, the game is currently showing a "Mixed" review score on Steam. Ma??ybe that'll change now we have the new update. But who knows?

BALANCE

For this patch, we wanted to primarily addres??s minor fixes.

We are aware that Last Man Standing and Armor Up are performing a bit too well, so we plan to give them a few tweaks that keep them effective, but require a bit more setup compared to the benefits they offer. This will be in the next big patch. Outside of these two skills, we don’t expect any big nerfs coming to skills in the next patch, but given players are still getti??ng used to the game, we’ll be keeping a close eye on the meta.

We are also aware that armor is considered the most desirable re??source compared to ammo and health. We are happy with how armor itself works, but we want to put in a few more ways for players to restore it in the game. We also think health is underperforming right now, but addressing that will be a gradual change over the first year of updates, rather than one sweeping update.

  • Using Manipulator Basic Skill will no longer cause an interaction interference when players do multiple interactions in a row

The Creative side of Fortnite just got a new experience, courtesy of developer Torus Games and publisher Starbreeze Entertainment. Turtle vs Turtle sets two teams on top of moving ?platforms and ??puts them in a battle of base destruction. 

Turtle vs Turtle is essentially the Fortnite that you know and love with a slightly different hook. ?The game supports two teams of up to eight players. Each team gets a moving platform, and team members ne?ed to get to work building defenses and turrets. The goal is to keep your own platform stable and on the move while blasting your opponents�to bits. 

Bill McIntosh, CEO of Torus Games (LEGO 2K Drive, World War Z) released a statement saying: “Creating Turtle vs Turtle has been an exh??ilarating journey for us at Torus Games, and the support from Starbreeze has been pivotal in bringing our vision to life.�

Starbreeze Entertainment, mostly a live service games publisher with titles like Roboquest and Payday 3, will be supporting Torus on Turtle vs Turtle as the game continues to evolve.

Creative 2.0

The game was built using Unreal Editor for Fortnite as part of the Creative system, which Epic released in March 2023. The toolset lets developers create new games inside Fortnite. It also lets them cash in on their work. Each month Epic pays a portion of its Fortnite reve??nue to creators based on player engagement with their games.

Starbreeze's other recent live service release, Payday 3, debuted in September to mostly negative reception. Fans ran into frequent matchmaking problems and were frustrated by the game’s need for an internet connection even during solo play. An update addressing some of the issues has faced multiple delays.

Turtle vs Turtle has a solid foundation as part of the Fortnite ecosystem, but Payday 3's rough start might make some reluctant to give ??it a shot.

If you've been waiting for the all-important Payday 3 patch to start rolling out, hopefully you won't have much longer to wait. While there's no release date for it just yet, the d?eveloper has at least tried to explain why it's taking so long.

In a post on the Payday website?, Starbreeze Studios has issued ye??t another apology, acknowledging that it's been a bit quiet recently. However, the message "lifts the curtain" a little to give some insight into what the developer is working on.

It turns out the reasons behind the patch being delayed are "long and complicated." As it transpires, the team has discovered "critical errors" which has lead to a "significant risk to player? progression being wiped" if the problems aren't addressed.

There's light at the end of the tunnel

Fear not, though, as the update "has been sent off and is currently going through a testing and?? certification process." Keep an ear out for further details as it sounds like the patch could be ready to launch soon. We just don't know when yet.

Upon release, Payday 3 was met with largely negative feedback. For starters, unreliable matchmaking was causing headaches for many players. On top of that, the game requires a constant internet connection, even when play?in??g solo. That alone was a thorn in many people's sides.

While the patch has been delayed a couple of times already, many will be hopeful Starbreeze will be able to resolve the issues and get it sent out. The studio may also be considering an offline mode.

It's not been a great launch for Payday 3. As well as experiencing issues with matchmaking, the new entry in the bank-robbing FPS has also had its first major patch delayed. Now, the dev??eloper has issued yet another apology, saying t??hat the anticipated update needs "additional time."

Over on Twitter, the official Payday 3 account apologized to fans for the "lack ?of communication regarding the first patch.". Starbreeze Studios says it's found more issues to rectify before the patch launches.

An additional post underneath notes due to the additional time needed to tend to the game, the studio can't provide an ETA on when fixes will launch just ?yet. A third tweet adds a suffix to this apology, saying that both the patch and some more news are inbound. We just don't know when.

Maybe it'll be worth it in the end

While the studio did do some maintenance to make Payday 3's matchmaki??ng better, one of the major criticisms with the game is the always-online feature. This means that even ?if you want to play a solo campaign, you're still required to connect to the server.

However, there is a possibility that an offline mode could come to the game. In a previous post on Twitter/X, the team said that, because of server issues ?at launch, "we are discussing every opt??ion available to us, including offline mode."

Hopefully, Payday 3 will eventually become the game fans want it to be. At the moment, it has a "Mixed" review score on Steam, with more than a few unhappy customers. Starbreeze has a chance? to turn things around, though.

It's not uncommon these days for a AAA game to launch, get met with backlash due to many issues, and the studio runs around trying to fix things. This is true of Payday 3, which saw matchmaking errors and a lack of offline fea?tures resulting in less-than-favorable scores for the game. Fortunately, developer Starbreeze is on the case, though its next update will take a bit longer than expected.

Originally intending to start rolling out this week, a Twitter post from the studio says the team is having to delay the sorely needed Payday 3 patch. The reason cited is the update "needs some changes that would require us to go through console certification again." That, and the team ?wants to ??"ensure its stability."

Unfortunately, we now have no release date for it, but the post goes on to say the developer should be able to send it out mid-Octobe??r.

Tuning the heist

Starbreeze did apologize for having to delay the? update, with a second post underneath saying that the PS5 bonus ??content "will remain unredeemable until this patch is ready."

On the plus side, there's going to be some additional server maintenance, so soon after the ones that occurred last weekend. An additional tweet from the official Payday 3 acc??ount says this maintenance will be going ahead between "8am-11am CEST on the 6th and 10th of October," and will hopefully "??not be noticeable."

While it's very easy to blame the studios themselves when games are released in poor states, there are always grea?ter factors to consider. From what Starbre??eze has said, it sounds like the team is scrambling to get things sorted. It's a shame we're having to wait a bit longer for the update, but hopefully it just means a more substantial and stable patch.

The Denuvo Dilemma

Developers use Denuvo to limit piracy. With Denuvo, cracking the game and redistributing it becomes harder. T??his is important during a game's launch period where it will m??ake a good percentage of its total sales. Eventually, pirates tend to crack a game, but the idea is that by delaying this, developers can maximize sales while interest is high.

The anti-tamper software usually isn't well-received by players, as it has been blamed for the poor performance of some games, including Tekken 7 on PC. Denuvo has denied these claims, though there are other reasons why the software is loathed. It can also leave some games unplayable, which happened in 2021 when domain issues left games such as Guardians of the Galaxy unable to launch.

With Denuvo removed, Payday 3 looks geared for a successful release. It currently sits at number 3 on Steam's top 100 chart, sitting behind Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Imagine running away from The Puppet

Since time immemorial (well...seven years ago), Dead by Daylight has made a name for itself with numerous crossovers. We've seen Silent Hill's Pyramid Head, Freddy Krueger, Bill from Left 4 Dead, Resident Evil 3's Nemesis,?? and more horror villains make an appearance.

We obviously don't know whether the team will bring the creepy animatronics from Five Nights at Freddy's over. However, it does sound like the studio is keen on the idea. The smash hit spooky series is still going, though it's not as popular as it once was. A film adaptation of FNaF is currently in the pipelin?e and due to release October 27.

Publisher Deep Silver and developer Starbreeze have announced the upcoming technical beta for Payday 3. The co-op heist shooter will be available to everyone from September 8-11. According to Starbreeze, the test will serve as a stress test of sorts for the Payday 3 servers ahead of its September 21 launch.

Because it is open to all, the technical open beta will not require a key to gain access. Instead, anyone can download and join the test. If you played the recent closed beta test, the content in this open test will be the same. Apparently, it's based on an April 2023 build and not a final representation of Payday 3.

It's a great chance to check out the gameplay of Payday 3 ahead of its release later this month.

One heist, but all difficulties

Even though only one heist is available during the beta, all original characters and all difficulties?? will be available. The Infamy level cap for the beta will be 22 whil?e the Weapon level cap is 8. Also, the beta will include the following features:

  • The original gang: Dallas, Hoxton, Chains, and Wolf. The iconic clown-masked characters that made the PAYDAY franchise infamous are all playable, each with their own unique skillset.
  • Featured heist: "No Rest for the Wicked" will be the playable heist during the closed beta. Representative of classic PAYDAY heists, “No Rest for the Wicked" tasks the players with liberating a small bank of the cash cluttering up their vault. Heisters can sneak through the building, “liberatingâ€?the bank’s cash, or go in guns blazing to get the full-on adrenaline rush of a big city bank robbery.
  • All difficulties will be playable, level cap is Infamy Level 22 and Weapon Level Progression is maxed at 8.

Players wanting to jump into the beta on PC can visit the Payday 3 store page on Steam and press the "Request Access" button at the top of the page. On Xbox, players will need to go to the Xbox Insider Hub, navigate to previews, and select Payday 3.

Now that we know when Payday 3 is coming out (September 21, if you needed a rem?inder), a lot of you PC gamers are going to be wondering whether your system will handle it. It's a modern FPS, after all, but as it turns out, the hardware spec doesn't appear ??????????????????????????as though it'll be too much of a struggle for most rigs.

According to the game's Steam page, Payday 3 won't push the boat out, especially in terms of graphics. If you're just aiming for the minimum re??quirements, you'll n??eed at least an Intel Core i5-9400F (or the AMD equivalent) and 16GB of RAM. You should also get by with no more than the 4GB power of an Nvidia GTX 1650.

Obviously, the recommended specs are a bit higher, but even then they don't seem too bad. For the CPU, you'll be wanting an i7-9700K, and you'll be able to get away with an Nvidia GTX 1080 (or, again, ?whatever Team Red's version of that is).

For a AAA shooter published by the likes of Deep Silver, you'd be forgiven for thinking the PC requirements would be much higher. It's probably worth saying that Payday 3 is still in development, but there's no reason to suggest what's listed on Steam will change. As it stands, most graphics cards from the GTX 1000 serie??s onwards should suffice.

Given that, according to the latest Steam hardware survey, there's a heavy mix of GPUs,? these system requirements should be within easy reach of a lot of you. The aforementioned GTX 1650 accounted for the most usage for June (5.67%), and there are a few PC gamers who are said to be using 3000 series products, so it should be a bre??eze to run the game for many.

Publisher Prime Matter, in association with developers Starbreeze Studios and Overkill Software, have started off their 2023 with a bang �a block of C4, to be precise �with an update on the long-awaited multiplayer sequel Payday 3, which will be donning masks and raiding vault?s later in 20??23.

The studios released a short teaser video, debuting the shooter sequel's logo but sadly devoid of any actual in-game footage. Regardless, it was announced that Payday 3 would be launching on PC (via Steam) and unspecified console platforms later this year, in news that will no doubt cause a lot of itchy trigger fingers among veteran heisters. A new FAQ revea??ls that the title will be set in New York, an?d will see the return of gang members Dallas, Hoxton, Chains, and Wolf.

A huge cash injection by Koch Media would ultimately allow production to continue, and this coming year will finally see Payday 3 hit the streets after its extremely troubled development cycle. It's hard not to see the title as a do-or-die situation for Starbreez?e, so here's hoping that the final release will, ultimately, break the bank.

Breaking the Bank

Dust off that suit, don that mask, and prepare to do your best Michael Mann monologue. Starbreeze has announced that it has finally scored a publishing deal for its long-in-development multiplayer sequel Payday 3, esse??ntially guaranteeing tha??t the troubled title will finally see daylight.

The developer announced that it had entered into a $50 million USD co-publishing deal with Swedish holding group Koch Media - a deal that sees Payday 3 "fully financed" and ready to enter its? remaining development phases. The deal wil?l also see Koch cover the sequel's marketing costs and 18 months of post-release support of the shooter's "games as a service" model.

"We are delighted to welcome Starbreeze as a new partner for our global publishing business," said Koch Media CEO Klemens Kundratitz."Payday 3 is shaping up to be an incredible game. Based on what we’ve seen already, Payday 3 is going to take the franchise to new heights and w??ill delight Payday fans as well as new audiences alike with innovative multiplayer gameplay."

While this is most certainly exciting news for the Payday community - which includes over 150,000 active players years after Payday 2's release - there is still quite a wait ahead. Starbreeze is expecting Payday 3 to hit both PC and console platfo?rms at some point in 2023. And so the franchise's band of gun-toting lawbreakers will at ?least have some more time with which to perfect their getaway plan. Will banks even exist by then?

Payday franchise gaining fresh momentum

Troubled developer Starbreeze has released its financial report for 2020. While the new numbers show a 20% decline in year-on-year sales, overall the studio's losses have shrunk f??rom previous years, suggesting that the Swedish developer might be on track to turn its fortunes around.

Over the course of 2020, Starbreeze managed to raise new capital and relieve itself of multiple debts, while its flagship title Payday 2 has seen huge growth on PC. The bank-raiding co-op shooter saw?? sales rise over 60% compared to 2019, which has led to a Steam playerbase of 7.1 million - the largest single game community on the entire platform.

Starbreeze acting CEO Tobias Sjögren is confident that this surge in Payday 2 interest will help the studio complete the long-in-development Payday 3, and hopes to sign a publisher soon.

"Starbreeze is a much stronger company today than it was one year ago," said Sjögren in the report. "We are hugely confident, thirsting for revenge and thrilled to be able to focus to the max on developing our IP with Payday front and center. With expanded development capacity and continued good demand for everything Payday, we are in prime position for future growth."

Starbreeze has faced continued peril in recent years. The company initially dodged insolvency in 2018 with a strict re-management structure, but fell hard following the disastrous launch of Overkill's The Walking Dead. Having survived 2020 - a year that saw many companies in all industries permanently shuttered - it seems that Starbreeze simply refuses to die, determined to see that Payday 3 is completed, published, and becomes a hit, perhaps pulling t?he studio back from the brink of oblivion.

An Unreal announcement

Payday 3 really needs to work out. I?f ??it doesn't, Starbreeze's years-long struggle to survive will probably end in tragedy.

The decline of Starbreeze has been well-documented at this point. A liquidity shortfall, organizational reconstruction, layoffs, some offloaded assets (like publishing rights and development studios) -- it has been ??a trying couple of years for the Swedish publisher.

That's why it's impossible (or at least negligent) to talk about Payday 3 without mentioning the stakes. But, Payday 2 was -- and still is -- so successful that Starbreeze secured funding for Payday 3's development without the need to rush it out the door. In fact, this is the first official update about Payday 3 in a long time:

There's sort of a lot to glean from that tweet. Payday 3 is still in the design phase meaning that developer Overkill's production hasn't yet ramped up on it. Things are still very conceptual as Overkill works out the foundation. Previous estimates had pegged Payday 3 for laun?ch in 2022 or 2023, so the timel??ine seems about right.

Also of note, Payday 3 is moving to Unreal Engine -- although it's not mentioned whether Overkill is working with UE4 or UE5. This marks a significant departure for the series, as Payday 2 runs on the proprietary Diesel 2.0 engine. There's no explanation given for the switch -- and this is entirely armchair analysis -- but it? might be partially so that contracted developers have an easier time with the tools they need to build the game.

Starbreeze's docket of upcoming games pretty much reads as: Payday: Crime War (mobile) and Payday 3. The mobile one may find a whole bunch of success and that'd be nice, but everyone knows that Payday 3 has to be the bread winner. It's not like Starbreeze has a vault ful??l of cash t??o play around with.

Long enough to give us Payday 3

One of the annual publi??cations from financial websites looking for easy hits is a list of companies that probably won't survive into the next year. Sometimes they're right on the money, like predicting Payless Shoes would go belly up in the United States, which it did earlier this year. Other times, it's just wishful thinking. Sears, despite its myriad of issues, is still alive and kicking like a centenarian who plays soccer.

A lot of these companies end up as perennial entries on these lists just because it seems like there is simply no way they could possibly make it another 12 months. Now, I haven't seen a single one of these websites mention video game companies, but if they did, Starbreeze would no d??oubt be right at the top.

Its troubles are well-known. After the poor launch of Overkill's The Walking Dead, management at Starbreeze immediately went into survival mode. It laid off a quarter of its staff back in June. It sold the publishing rights to System Shock 3, Psychonauts 2, and 10 Crowns. It sold its majority stake in an Indian devel?oper to Rockstar. Despite its firesale of assets and employees, Starbreez??e believes better days are on the horizon.

According to a post published on the company's website, Starbreeze expects to see a cash influx next year with two of its upcoming games: Payday: Crime War for mobile devices and Payday 3. Right now, it's expecting to cement publishing deals in 2020 for both titles that will give it enough cash to survive through 2022/2023 when Payday 3 should release. Despite all the troubles Starbreeze has seen, the richly entertaining Payday 2 has continued to be a bright spot in its portfolio and is easily its most valuable asset. The company expects its publishing partners for these ti??tles will pick up the ongo?ing production costs after its first initial payment.

Starbreeze will present a formal reconstruction plan to creditors and investors soon. As part of those plans, it has split its publishing and development arms Starbreeze Publishing AB and Starbreeze Studios AB respectively, with the former holding the lucrative IP rights to Payday. If everything works out, we could be seeing the next entry in the Payday series in just a couple of years. Just make sure it's better than the Switch port of 2.

Switch is about to get one of the finest indie hits from the last generation of consoles. Josef Fares' video game debut Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons is bringing its familial bonding to ?Switch on May 28 fo??r $15.

The most unexpected addition to the Switch version is maybe also the most obvious. Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons is getting two-player cooperative play. It's a double-edged sword. There's a thematic? harmony about it in that it's now possible to navigate throug?h this sorrowful story with someone who's close to you -- maybe a partner, a friend, a parent, or, yes, even a brother.

But, Brothers' hook is that one player controls both siblings, one on the left analog stick and one on the right. It's supposed to represent the bond between the brothers. They're independent but unified. I never thought the system worked particularly well, but I respect what it stands for. Without that -- with someone only manning a single brother -- that emotional attachment is gone. There's an attachment to the person you're playing with, but that's not really the same thing. Free from the dual-stick control scheme, Brothers seems like it'd?? be just another cooperative puzzle adventure game.

Rockstar welcomes Dhruva Interactive to the family

Starbreeze is in financial peril, recently made worse by a $17.5 million loss during the first quarter of the current fiscal year. The Swedish publisher expects a liquidity shortfall by mid-2019, meaning that its liabilities significantly outweigh its assets that can be quickly turned into cash. Within a year, Starbreeze predicts it'll be out of money.

Today, Starbreeze has flipped one asset and Rockstar is the primary b?eneficiary. Starbreeze sold its 91.82 percent ownership in Dhr??uva Interactive to Rockstar Games for $7.9 million. Dhruva Interactive is an Indian art production studio that's located in Bangalore. Starbreeze originally bought a majority stake in Dhruva for $8.5 million in 2016.

Rockstar already has a development presence in India; Rockstar India, also in Bangalore, has been ??a Rockstar subsidiary for the past three years. Dhruva will help support Rockstar's games that are in development, while also continuing work on other projects that are a??lready ongoing.

As for Starbreeze, this is the most drastic move yet, but it has been forced to sell off other assets. Recently, it sold back the publishing rights to System Shock 3 and Mohawk Games' 10 Crowns. It's reasonable to assume that Starbreeze might have to offload other studios in?? order to stabilize itself. Don't be surprised if this leads to a fire sale, because Starbreeze needs cash and it needs it quick.

Something needs to change ASAP

Starbreeze needs immediate funding. If it can't find either new investors or a ne??w source of revenue, the Swedish compa??ny may go belly-up before the end of the year.

The l?atest financial report from Starbreeze states that it expects a liquidity shortfall by mid-2019 unless CEO Mikael Nermark can secure some sort of funding. A liquidity shortfall occurs when a company's debts and financial liabilities outweigh its assets that can be quickly converted to cash. Without an injection of external funding, Nermark anticipates that Starbreeze will run out of money within 12 months' time. Starbreeze declared a loss of $17.5 million for the first quarter of the current fiscal year.

The main culprit for Starbreeze's downfall is the underperforming Overkill's The Walking Dead. Starbreeze's first quarter revenues were a mere $5 million (down 56 percent year-over-year), and Overkill's The Walking Dead contributed a paltry $220,000. The game was bad enough that license-holder Skybound Entertainment terminated its contract with Starbreeze, forcing its removal from Steam.

On the bright side, Payday continues to shine. It was responsible for $2.8 million in revenue -- more than half of everything Starbreeze earned. Nermark called Payday?? "a very strong asset" a?nd "the foundation upon which we will build Starbreeze's future." 

This is the path that Starbreeze has been on for some time now. Last December, it announced a reconstruction which involved replacing its CEO, placing a freeze on debts to vendors, and removing long-term financial targets. However, the situation has only gotten more dire. It has sold some assets, like publishing rights to System Shock 3, but it's clear that much more needs to be done. If something drastic does??n't happen soon, Starbreeze may be forced to close its doors.

Dead Game Walking

Speaking in an interview with Eurogamer, anonymous developers from beleaguered outfit Starbreeze Studios have revealed that Overkill's The Walking Dead stood no chan??ce of being a decent release, with the team expecting the game to tan?k.

In the very candid feature about the recent troubles of the Swedish studio, developers revealed that the co-op shooter was having problems from its early years, where an entire engine's work was abandoned as Overkill's TWD was shift?ed to Unreal, costing the studio resources and, reportedly,?? a ton of cash.

"It was as if switching to Unreal was going to solve everything," says one developer in the interview. "In their minds it was ??magical, but we had other problems that couldn't be fixed just by changing the engine. The goal was to produce a triple-A multiplayer game in a year on Unreal. Anybody with common sense knew from the start it wouldn't be possible."

Another member of the team lambasts the product and its latter-day developmental stages? in a very candid, very sad statement. "Everyone knew it was going to tank. All of us, we put our blood, sweat and tears - and our fucking livers and pancreases - everything into that game, and no matter how much we would push to do it as best we could, it got shat on. No matter how much you polish a turd,  it's still a turd."

The Eurogamer feature also looks at the "crunch" mentality within the studio, something that has been rightly under-the-microscope as of late, the merger with Overkill, as well as the firing of CEO Bo Andersson and why the success of the Payday games just wasn't enough.

Overkill's The Walking Dead, much like Dead Island, was introduced to the audience with a series of excellently-made and affecting trailers, as well as promising skill-based survival gameplay, where teamwork would be of the utmost importance. The final release unfortunately reveal??ed little more than a formulaic co-op?? zombie-shooter, confused about its own identity. Having bombed on release on PC last fall, the planned 2019 console ports have since been "postpon?ed."

Down but not out

Payday publisher Starbreeze is? seemingly struggling as of late. The Swedish game developer has filed for reconstruction due to a shortage of liquid assets -- capital that can be near-immediately turned into cash.

As part?? of the reconstr??uction process, Starbreeze has ousted CEO Bo Andersson. Additionally, Andersson and Kristofer Arwin have relinquished their seats on the board of directors. Starbreeze has removed its financial targets for fiscal years 2018 and 2020 as a result of this restructuring.

While the press release doesn't exhaustively detail what led to this outcome, it does mention that disappointing initial sales of Overkill's The Walking Dead helped put the company in this position. "However, with the latest statistics from Overkill's The Walking Dead (includi??ng effects from latest marketing efforts) affecting the forecasted sales, it has reduced the short-term forecasted revenue resulting in an expected shortfall of cash in January 2019," Starbreeze says.

It should be noted that this isn't dire straits for Starbreeze. There's a freeze on outstanding debts to vendors, but employees ??will continue receiving their paychecks and operations will proceed as normal. If this tactic is successful, Starbreeze notes that it'll be able to "negotiate a long-term financial solution" and, ideally, have the publisher humming along again.

At this point I have no idea how Sony's Day's Gone is going to fare. We seem to be reaching peak zombie, with The Walking Dead TV series slowing down and the low financial results for H1Z1 and Overkill's The Walking Dead??. Wait, didn't that last one just launch on PC and isn't it still set for a 2019 console release?? Yes, yes it is.

Speaking on the launch, PC publisher Starbreeze explained that they're basically reworking the entire way they look at funding their games division due to recent losses. Part of the problem is that the $10 million license fee from 505 Games for the console editions of Walking Dead won't be counted for their four??th quarter earnings, which significan??tly dips their financials.

Starbreeze Chairman Michael Hjorth spoke to the issue, stating: "Initial sales revenues from Overkill's The Walking Dead are lower than forecasted, primarily because the share of sales in low-price countries, such as China and Russia, is significantly higher than expected. This is disappointing, of course, but we have a base to work with in regards to the number of games sold. We have a pulse of concurrent players, which is essential to future performance ??within the framework of our Games as a Service concept. The team is working at full capacity to deliver improvements to the game and new content, and Season 2 will be starting soon."

So yeah, they're soldiering on with a more frugal outlook to essentially avoid insolvency, and are counting on the $10 million bucks from 505 to propel them in 2019. If you happen to play Overkill's The Walking Dead it isn't quite...dead, at least not yet.

Starbreeze and Skybound Entertainment has announced that co-op shooter Overkill's The Walking Dead has begun its closed beta on PC, allowing pre-order customers the opportunity to c??heck out the team-based shooter ahead of its release next month.

Players who have pre-ordered the standard edition of Overkill's The Walking Dead should find a code waiti?ng in their inbox, while those who purchased the deluxe edition will be given four codes for themselves and a trio of buddies to partake in the survival horror action. Currently the beta features two missions and two Camp Defence scenarios, though more content is expected to be added in the run-up to release day.

Overkill's The Walking Dead sees players step into the shoes of a quartet of tough-as-nails survivors, who must use th??eir respective skills in order to survive an onslaught of Walkers. Teamwork and co-operation, as well as a handy sawn-off shotgun will be nee?ded to get you and your buddies through the grim and gory night.

Overkill's The Walking Dead ??launches November 6 on PC, with PS4, and Xbox One editi?ons to follow in February of next year.

Starbreeze has announced that co-op zombie-shooter Overkill's The Walking Dead will not be released on PS4 and Xbox One in November ?as expected. Instead, these console versions will arrive sometime in Februa??ry 2019.

A statement by Starbreeze in their latest financial report mentions that 505 Games, who will be publishing the console editions of the online multiplayer title, have made this decision "because they want to ensure a simultaneous release of the console version digitally and??? in stores to achieve optimal marketing impact and maximize sales".

Despite 505 Games' date change for consoles, the PC version of Overkill's The Walking Dead will still release, as planned, on November 6.

Shop 'til you Drop

Starbreeze have released the fourth character trailer for their upcoming survival shooter Overkill's The Walking Dead, which i?s c??oming to PS4, Xbox One and PC later this year.

The latest in this excellent series of shorts features Heather, a young woman out gathering groceries, who runs afoul of a trio of vicious looters, leading to a bloody and very violent confrontation. "Heather" is in keeping with previous trailers "Aiden," "Grant" and "Maya," squeezing a lot of action, tragedy and emotion into a few scant minutes. We can only hope that the game itself will live up to this promise. We'll never forget the Dead Island bait-and-switch.

Overkill's The Walking Dead is a co-op adventure where each character on the team is equipped with specific skills and abilities. Teamwork and adaptive improvisation will prove the key to survival in a world filled?? with hordes of Walkers and dangerou??s gangs of cut-throat villains.

Grant and friends

Another sombre trailer has been released by Starbreeze Studios, building the hype for in-development co-op shooter Overkill's The Walking Dead. Like the excellent Maya trailer last month, ?this short takes a look at one of the player protagonists; Grant.

Grant is a somewhat older gentleman making his way through the Walker-filled world, seemingly on a mission to track down his lost grand-daughter. Though the zombie apocalypse can be a pretty barren place, Grant has at leas??t found a pal to keep him company.

Although not quite as well done as the Maya video, Grant is still an interesting and dramatic short, telling the story of a lifetime in a few relatable words. Here's hoping, unlike Dead Island before it, the intensity of these trailers transfer to the finish??ed game, which is hoping to encourage teamwork, character skills and ingenuity as the key to player survival.

Critical condition

Strabreeze have released a new trailer for their upcoming co-op shooter based on hugely-popular zombie franchise The Walking Dead. The trailer introduces us to one of the game's protagonists, May?a.

In the excellent two-minute spot Maya, a ??young hospital worker attempts to come to terms with the aftermath of a massacre which begins after a wounded man is rushed onto her ward. The short preview does a great job of conveying mood and emotion, as well as streamlining her life-changing day into just a few short minutes.

Overkill's The Walking Dead is a first-person shooter which features four player co-op. Each of the game's protagonists will be have exclusive skills, roles and abilities, as well as? ?their own personalities and story arcs. The game is hoping to focus on players utilising teamwork and adaptive improvisation to survive the living nightmare.

Batter up!

This past weekend, Overkill Software held a livestream reveal event for its long coming Walking Dead game. The game will follow the template of previous Overkill games, PAYDAY, and be a four player coope??rative shooter. You'll ?obviously be facing off against zombies instead of police and the game takes place in a post apocalyptic Washing D.C.

Taking a cue from Borderlands, there will be four selectable characters with different skill trees and abilities to use. The first character, Aidan, was given a ci?nematic trailer that barely shows off anything about him. If nothing else, it does give us a ?glimpse of how D.C. might look in the final version.

The game is still heading to PC, PS4 and ?Xbox One and is targeting ?a release for late 2018. You can sign-up for updates from the official website, if you so choose.
