I have to admit, there were fewer remasters than I had expected, and even less promotion o??f the PlayStation 5 Pro (though there was some), and overall it was a better presentation than I had expected. Let's dive into everything shown in the Sony State of Play for September 2024.

Sony State of Play September 2024 Recap

The big reveal of this State of Play is Ghost of Yotei, a follow-up to the hit Sucker Punch action-adventure game Ghost of Tsushima. But there were other gems scattered throughout including a release date for Fantasian Neo Dimension and Monster Hunter Wilds, a couple of remasters, and the oddly-timed release of Palworld on the PS5. Astro Bot Speedrun Levels and Special Bots Add-On DLC

The newly released platformer Astro Bot is getting a free add-on in Fall 2024 that features five new online speedrun levels and 10 new bots to rescue. I'm all for anything Astro Bot at this point, so glad to see if? gettin?g some new content fast!

The Midnight Walk

This clearly claymation-inspired horror caught me off guard with its varying gameplay elements, but that's probably because it's coming to both PS5 and PSVR2. This dark fantasy adventure from the developers of Lost in Ransom has players take on the role of The Burnt One, an odd character who befriends a lost lantern named POtboy and uses his flame to light the way through a d??ark world. Definitely creepy-looking.

Hell is Us Gameplay Reveal

I did a brief write-up on the Hell is Us gameplay reveal, but it looks like an amalgamation of Death Stranding meets Dark Souls meets something like Control? It definitely has some potential. Excited to learn more in??? the future.

Metro Awakening Release Date

The Metro Awakening VR title is coming to PSVR 2 on November 7, 2024. If you pre-order the de??luxe edition you get a 10% dis?count and 48 hours early access. Which is something.

ArcheAge Chronicles Announced

I also did a brief write up on ArcheAge Chronicles, an online action RPG set in the world of ArcheAge. This one feels kind of odd as the MMORPG just shut down in the West a few months ago, and an actual MMORPG sequel to ArcheAge has already been announced. But it does look good, so hopefully it ends up being a nice addition to the ArcheAge universe.

Palworld Coming to PS5

I'm with Zoey and wasn't a huge fan of Palworld, but it's hard to deny how successful it's been. Either way, despite a recent lawsuit from Nintendo, developer Poc??k?etpair is releasing the clearly-Pokemon-influenced title on PlayStation 5, well, uhh, today. Right now. If this is your thing, I'd grab it quick, just in case, you know...the lawsuit.

Lunar Remastered Collection coming to PS4 and PS5

I wasn't expecting this one, but man am I happy to see it. Fabled JRPGs LUNAR: Silver Star Story Complete and LUNAR 2: Eternal Blue Complete have gotten the definit???ive remaster treatment and are coming to PS4 and PS5 in Spring 2025 with enhanced graphics, audio, and QOL improvements.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge - Radical Reptiles DLC

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge beat em up is getting a brand new Radical Reptiles DLC. In the DLC are two new playable fighters: radical surfer Mondo Gecko and physics student turned reptilian rapscallion Mona Lisa. The TMNT ??title is also getting a free update adding a new rockin' remix mode of ?the official soundtrack.

FANTASIAN Neo Dimension Release Date

The currently iOS-exclusive RPG by Hironobu Sakaguchi, scored by fabled composer Nobuo Uematsu, is finally dated for its PS4 and PS5 release. FANTASIAN Neo Dimension is set to release on both p??latforms on Decem??ber 5, 2024.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Blighted Dragon Gameplay

As someone who has mostly steered clear of anything Dragon Age: The Veilguard, primarily because I already know I want to play it and so I don't want anything spoiled, this gameplay trailer got me even more hyped for the RPG's impending release. The combat looks great and I can't wait to delve in when Dragon Age: The Veilguard releases on October 31, 2024.

Alan Wake 2 Lake House Expansion

The 2023 GOTY contender Alan Wake 2 is getting a new expansion next month that takes place on the shores of Cauldron Lake, where a catastrophic event has occurred. The expansion will unfold parallel to the main game, putting you in the shoes of FBC Aggent Kiran Estevez. More Alan Wake 2? I'm in.

Hitman World of Assassination for PSVR 2

Hitman is getting the VR treatment with Hitman World of Assassination coming t??o PSVR 2 with 21 ?locations, dual wielding, and "intuitive gestures". Which sounds cool but also a bit deranged seeing as you play as an assassin. Live out our assassin fantasies this December.

Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1 and 2 Remastered

After leaking early in a PSN listing today, it was officially announced that remastered versions of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2 are comin??g to the PS4 and PS5. The duo remasters are set to launch on December 10. I personally never got to play these, but I've been told I need to. So maybe I will. Maybe.

Fear the Spotlight Release Date

One of the games in the new Blumhouse Games horror title lineup is Fear the Spotlight, and it will be released on October 22, 2024 on both PS4 and PS5. The horror title is touted as a creepy ??love letter to classic 90s horror experiences, with a focus on rich storytelling, puzz?le solving, and a tense atmosphere. Of all the Blumhouse Games coming up, this one really stood out to me, so I'm excited to see how it turns out next month.

Towers of Aghasba Gameplay

Action-adventure builder Towers of Aghasba showed off its gameplay in this trailer, where players must rebuild civilization and the surrounding ecosystem while rebuilding the balance between the two. I had forgotten about this one but this gameplay trailer put it back on my radar. Gameplay-wise it looks like a mix of Horizon and some Zelda-like elements. Towers of Aghasba enters Early Access in November 2024.

Fortnite DualSense Controller

I guess it's time to drop tilted in style. Maybe? This looks like the default Starlight Blue colored DualSense controller, with some random Fortnite stickers on it. It looks pretty low effort, if I'm being honest. But Fortnite. Pre-orders start on October 3.

Dynasty Warrior Origins Gameplay and Release Date

Like Zoey said, oh so many dudes. Koei Tecmo showed off some more Dynasty Warrior: Origins gameplay as well as dropped the release date which is January 17, 2025. The two of us agreed we're excited to see how Dynasty Warriors pl??ays on more powerful hardware since we haven't really gotten that opport?unity yet.

Monster Hunter Wilds Release Date

I t?houg??ht we'd be waiting a ways into 2025 but nope, Monster Hunter Wilds is set to release on February 28, 2025. Time to start requesting some tim?e off for that week. Seriously though, it looks great, and I'm happy we're getting this early into 2025.

LEGO Horizon Adventures

I guess this is just a "please preorder this" trailer but we did get some new LEGO Horizon Adventures gameplay. I really struggle with getting into the LEGO games, but I know others love them. It does look like a solid representation of Horizon in the lego-verse, which is cool. LEGO Horizon Adventures is set to release on November 14, 2024.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

Still not sure this one is necessary, but Horizon Zero Dawn is officially getting remastered. Despite already being optimized to run on the PS4 Pro, the open-world action-adventure game has be??en remastered for your PS5 and PC, set to release on October 31, 2024. Couldn't we have gotten oe of the many PS3 games worthy of a remaster?

Stellar Blade x NieR: Automata DLC Collab

I loved both of these games, so I'm down for the collab. Stellar Blade is getting a Nier: Automata collab later this year as well as an all-new photo mode where you can pose, choose filters, and more to make the perfect spot. I know what you're?? thinking. Don't do it.

Chroma Collection for DualSense Controllers and PS5 Console Covers

If you want your controller and console to be Indigo Blue, Pearl White, or Teal, you can do? so on November 7, 2024 with these Chroma C??olored accessories. Neato.

PlayStation 5 Pro Hype Reel

I honestly thought we'd get an "Optimized for PS5 Pro" after every video in the lineup today, so I was happy to see it condensed into a roughly 1.5-minute sizzle reel. FF7 Rebirth, Horizon Forbidden West, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Alan Wake 2, Stellar Blade, Dragon's Dogma 2, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Rise of the Ronin, Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Demon's Souls, Resident Evil 4, F1 24, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Assassin's Creed Shadows, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 al??l have PS5 Pro enhancements apparently. Stand s??old separately.

Ghost of Yotei

The September 2024 State of Play ended with the reveal of the follow-up to hit action-adventure title Ghost of Tsushima. Titled Ghost of Yotei, the next game by Sucker Punch takes place in 1603 during the popular Sengoku Period in Japan. Like Zoey said, it's definitely got Tsushima vibes with its tall grass, horseback riding, and feudal Japan swordplay. Ghost of Yotei releases on PS5 in 2025.

Thank goodness it's not a Leap Year! The highly anticipated Monster Hunter Wilds revealed its official release date as February 28, 2025, during today's State of Play. Pre-orders are available now with a MH Wilds Digital Mini Artbook for those who do so.

I'm so excited for Wilds but until now it only had a 2025 release date, so I assumed it would be mid to late next year. I'm glad that's not the case! Wilds is also getting three unique editions: Standard, Deluxe, and Premium Deluxe. The Delux includes a Deluxe Pack DLC, while the Premium Deluxe includes the Deluxe Pack, two COsmetic DLC packs, and o?ther "prem??ium bonuses".

The trailer also showed off some gameplay including some new monsters, but what caught me by surprise was how much story there appears to be in Wilds??, based on the dialogue segments. Which to be honest, I'm all f??or.

Monster Hunter Wilds is? set to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on February 28, 2025.

Sony revealed on the PlayStat??ion Blog that the next PlayStation State of Play is set for tomorrow, September 24, at 6 pm EST. The presentation will be streamed on both YouTube and Twitch and will feature more than 20 upcoming PS5 and PS VR 2 titles from studios all over the world.

The last State of Play occurred in May of this year and focused primarily on the ill-fated Concord, taking up over 10 minutes of the roughly half-hour presentation. As for what to expect with this State of Play, Sony hasn't confirmed anything specific but has mentioned over 20 titles will be front and center. It's highly likely we'll see Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered officially announced, and there have been rumors of other PlaySta??tion title remasters in the works.

Surely any remastered announcements will attempt to show off the newly announced PlayStation 5 Pro, and I imagine we'll see a 'Enhanced for PS5 Pro' or similar moniker after most of the reveals. You know, marketi?ng stuff.

However, it's?? always possible that Sony has kept a top-secret new IP or popular IP game announcement that hasn't leaked yet. It feels like as good a time of ever for Sony to have an ace up their sleeve, after all.

But if the State of Play is bound to be packed full of remasters, wake me up when Bloodborne Remastered drops.

Developer Survios debuted the first gameplay trailer for Alien: Rogue Incursion during today's PlayStation State of Play. The VR single-player action-horror game focuses on an all-new storyline in the Alien univers??e as they try to survive an encounter with the "Perfect Organ?ism" in VR.

Built in Unreal Engine 5, Alien: Rogue Incursion utilizes the power of VR to drop players into an intense action-horror environment as they try to survive and outsmart the Alien with shooter-style gameplya and mechanics as they explore an Alien-infested facility on the harsh planet of Purda??n.

Alien: Isolation is still one of my favorite horror titles of all time, so if Rogue Incursion can manage to channel even a fraction of that I'll be happy. Besides, Isolationfelt like a perect transition into VR so this could? very well be a perfect match.

Alien: Rogue Incursion?? is set to release this Holiday 2024 on PlayStation VR2, PCV??R via Steam, and Meta Quest 3.

As part of the PlayStation State of Play stream, Konami and Bloober Team have given us a deeper look at the remake of Silent Hill 2. It focu?ses mostly on Angela Orosc?o, as well as some pretty familiar-looking scenes from the game. More importantly, we have a release date of October 8, 2024.

There’s a lot that’s really familiar being shown off. It looks to me like Bloober Team are trying very hard to keep it as close to the original as they can while making modern changes. However, it doesn’t really matter how careful they are; they’re working on an extremely ?beloved game, and not everyone is g?oing to love it.

Frankly, I think Silent Hill 2 is a great game????, but I’m not huge on it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fantastic, I’m just not totally enthusiastic. I don’t think a remake is really going to change that, but I’m open to the possibility.

Silent Hill 2 (the r?emake) is out on October 8, 2024 for PS5 and PC.

During Sony's May 30 2024 State of Play, developer Firewalk Studios detailed its upcoming 5v5 PvP-focused FPS called Concord. Originally revealed in 2023, this is the first concrete details we've seen about Concord since. After starting with a nearly 5-minute long cinematic trailer that gave massive Guardians of the Galaxy vibes, we got a roughly 2-minute long gameplay trailer that looked a lot like Overwatch.

Players take on the role of a Freegunner and join their teammates to take on rival Freegunner crews in space heists across six different 5v5 PvP modes that take places on a variety of planets and exotic maps on those planets. There seems to be some pretty interesting variety between the characters, but the genre feels so overdone at this point I can't help but wonder if Concord is a bit late to the party.

Concord is a PlayStation 5 console exclusive but will also launch on PC, though despite the recent Helldivers 2 fiasco, Concord ?will in fact require a PlayStation Network account to be played on PC. Those interested in taking on the role of a Freegunner and jumping into the 5v5 PvP gameplay will have the opportunity to do so when the Early Access beta dr??ops on June 6, 2024, with the full release scheduled for August 23, 2024.

Sony has announced that their next State of Play is coming up tomorrow (May 30). This kicks off the del?uge of streams whe?re publishers show off their upcoming games around the wreckage of where E3 once stood.

The exact timing for the State of Play stream is May 30 at 3pm PT / 6pm ET | May 31 12am CEST / 7am JST.

?The stream is set to be over 30? minutes long, and Sony is stating that it will feature 14 titles. It will cover updates on PS5 and PS VR2 titles, plus a look at PlayStation Studios games arriving later this year.

Aside from that, there aren’t many hints on what’s going to be at the stream. There have been teases at a new Astro Bot game, but nothing really aside from that. There’s potential that Insomniac’s Wolverine game might mak??e an appearance, but that still seems like a?? long way off.

Otherwise, I’m hoping for a new Intelligence Qube. Maybe a new Twisted Metal. I’m a simple person. I’d just like to see something from th??e properties that Sony seems to have forgotten about.

Like a lot of other horror fans, I'm holding out that Bloober Team's remake of Silent Hill 2 won't b??e a major letdown. While we wait to find that out, ??however, we can treat ourselves to the new "combat trailer" shown at the most recent State of Play.

There are no prizes for guessing what the footage shows. While we get some of the cinematic goodness of the new Silent Hill 2, we also get to see James Sunderland and his guns making?? friends ??with enemies. Ha ha! Their heads ago a-splatter!

But in all seriousness, it seems the remake is doing a revamp of the combat to make it more modern. It makes sense. The original SH2 �as magnificent as it was �wo??uldn't work in this era with its rather outdat??ed control scheme.

New Silent Hill when?

Of course, the question on everyone's lips is: when's it coming out? Well, we don't know that I'm afraid.?? The trailer doesn't give a release date or even ??a release window. We can "wishlist now" and it's being made exclusively for PS5.

On a personal note, I'm slightly bitter that it's only coming to PlayStation. Sure, I could get it for PC, but there's no way on this ?�or any other �planet my laptop would be able?? to run it (my laptop says hi, by the way).

From what we've seen, it looks like Bloober's take on what is considered a masterpiece has potential. Unless the studio deviates massively fr??om everything that made the original so iconic, it's going to take a lot to really fumble an up-to-date reimagining of this horror classic.

The first PlayStation State of Play for 2024 ended with a bit of a surprise. State of Play will return just one week from now on February 6 with an "extensive look" at Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth.

While we don't know what exactly we'll get a look at, today's State of Play did say Square E??nix will be sharing new gameplay details along with exciting news we "won't want to miss".

A new Sonic was revealed during PlayStation's first State of Play of the year. Titled Sonic X Shadow Generations, Shadow is? teaming up with Classic and Modern Sonic in a collection featuring two different experiences.

Players will have the opportunity to play as Shadow the Hedgehog in a brand-new story campaign or tackle 2D and 3D stages as both Classic and Modern Sonic in a remastered version of Sonic Generations.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is coming to the PlayStati??on 5 and PlayStation 4 in Au??tumn 2024.

If you want to find out more about what's coming to the platform, there's nothing better than PlayStatio??n's State of Play. Sony's next State of Play showcase is airing ?this week.

The first State of Play for 2024 comes Wednesday, January 31 at 2 p.m. PT / 5 p.m. ET, which happens to be the last day of the month. We only have a small idea of what's going to be in the 40-minute show, save for a few titles, but that's part of the experience. In the announcement, it is stated that we'll see over 15 games during ?the event.

Games announced include Rise of the Ronin and Stellar Blade, which will receive extended looks. I'm particularly interested in Rise of the Ronin and how it will differentiate itself from aesthetically similar games that have?? flooded the market.

This year's showcase arrives a bit earlier than last year's first State of Play, but other companies have already been off to the races with their lineups for 2024. Xbox recently hosted its 2024 Developer Direct, locking in some release windows for games like Avowed, Hellbade 2, and Indiana Jones.

Nintendo, which usually has a February stream of some kind, still has yet to lock in a Direct. Most of the noise around it has been rumors and reports on a potential Switch successor. Whether or not we see a new Switch in 2024 has yet to be confirmed. But with Sony stepping up to the plate, we mig?ht start to get an idea of what their year ah?ead looks like.

At the Sony State of Play, we got to see titles both old and new. While Honkai: Star Rail has already made its debut earlier thi??s year, we got confirmation today that PlayStation owners can experience MiHoYo's latest universe on October 11.

The trailer itself didn't show too much, but considering the game's out in the wild, it probably didn't need to. According to MiHoYo's FAQ for the Technical Test of the PlayStation version of the game, accounts will transfer between devices. So for those looking to play Star Rail bot??h at home via your PlayStation 5 and on the go on your phone, things look pretty good.

Honkai: Star Rail is currently available for free with microtransactions on ??PC, iOS, and Android.

During the Sony State of Play presentation today, we got a look at some new content coming for Resident Evil 4 remake. The juiciest reveal here is the return of the Separate Ways campaign starri??ng Ada W??ong, which will finally hit the game next week on September 21.

It was perhaps a given that Separate Ways would make it back to Resident Evil 4 in one way or another.? Its exclusion from the remake's original release didn't escape ire from fans, so it's go??od to see it here now. For those who want to play as Ada in the current console generation, here you go.

Additionally, Capcom also teased a free update for The Mercenaries that will also go live on the 21st. While it didn't elaborate?, the splash screen showed Ada and Wesker, so it's safe to assume the update will add them both to the roster.

This news came alongside another look at the upcoming VR update to Resident Evil 4, which looks and sounds about as you'd expect. So if you have a PlayStation VR headset, it looks like you'll have a few reasons to return? to the world of survival horror in the near future.

A fairly comprehensive look at the next Final Fantasy

Today's Final Fantasy XVI State of Play was centered completely on the upcoming RPG. It was easily the most extensive look we've had yet, showcasing everything fro??m com?bat and bosses to RPG systems.

Final Fantasy XVI follows Clive, the protagonist, through three different parts of his life. Part of it shows him as a young teen, then again in his 20s, and later in his 30s. The warrior finds himself set on a? quest for revenge across the world of Valisthea, dealing with the politics and powers of the supernatural Eikons and massive crystals along the way.

Across 25 minutes, we get a good look at a lot of Final Fantasy XVI's gameplay and systems. We've already seen some of the combat before, but today's State of Play showed more powers available to Clive in Final Fantasy XVI, themed around the various Eikons. Shiva freezes, Odin slashes, and Ramuh brings down the thunder and l?ightning.

Those Eikons play a big p?art in the boss fights, with Clive fighting them on-??foot as a human. The player can also engage in Eikon v. Eikon fights, which look absolutely massive and impressive. Many series standards are here—Bahamut, Phoenix, Ifrit, even Typhon.

Still, I'm just as interested in the sights and sounds of Valisthea. Some of the vistas and gorgeous graphics around the crystals impressed me. Final Fantasy XVI is a PS5 console exclusive, and I'm hoping that focus on the new generation hardware ?leads to some impressive sights.

Striking a balance

We also get a good look at the menus, systems, and RPG facets. As I mentioned in my write-up of a preview in February, Final Fantasy XVI is definitely an action RPG??, s??triking a balance between those two aspects.

Though combat is fa??st a??nd frenetic, we got a look at some of the ability and equipment upgrade sections today too. There's also some lore to dive into, and a really cool-looking history section that seems like it would be fun to revisit throughout the story.

We also got a solid look at the party members who can accompany Cliv??e; while you'll only control the protagonist, and issue commands to his dog Torgal, you can still mosey with your party members, chat it up, and have their AI-driven help in fights.

Ultimately, today's Final Fantasy XVI State of Play was largely just a big showcase of what's to come, without anything too big on the news front. Still, it's a reminder that we do have a new Final Fantasy hitting?? this June, and it certainly seems like the sort of l??arge-scale adventure you'd expect.

The Iron Body steps back into the ring

Last week's Sony State of Play presentation was notable for its gameplay reveal of the final three characters joining the launch roster of Capcom's great-looking punchfest, Street Fighter 6 �And alongside the ever-p??opular Cammy and cutesy new gal Lily, we also saw the return of a? true Street Fighter veteran, the wrestler with an iron body and a golden heart: Zangief.

Hailing from Russia, Zangief made his debut as one of the iconic eight playable characters in 1991's groundbreaking Street Fighter II: The World Warriors. As the key grappler for that game, Zangief made a name for himself with his violent array of throws, dizzying airborne headbutt, and one of the most famous moves in fighting game history, the Spinning Piledriver. Zangief has since appeared in almost every Street Fighter title to date, and is still considered the de facto grappler of the series, esche??wing speed and mobility for the ability to crush a cornered opponent? with ease.

Thanks to the power of Street Fighter 6's RE engine, ?the Russian p?owerhouse is looking better than ever.

While still retaining his instantly identifiable shape and trademark beard/mohawk combo, SF6 Zangief is designed in such a way that truly capitalizes on the new engine, turning him into an almost amorphous mass of muscle tissue and Scott Ste?iner veins. Additionally, the animation on his range of throws is stupendous, with his standard Body Slam and German Suplex maneuvers having an amazing sense of weight and inertia to them. Of course, his gravity-defying supers are present and correct, including his devastating piledriver and double suplex. New additions include a wall-bounce-inducing standing dropkick, a hammer blow Drive Impac?t attack, and Goldberg's trademark finisher, the Jackhammer.

We do not know what role Zangief has to play in the world of Street Fighter 6, but our boy has generally always fought on the side of good... well, save for a short period in the Street Fighter movie. A man who only lived for strength and power, the later years have softened Zangief somewhat, and seen him gladly share his knowledge and wisdom with younger fighters such as R. Mika and?? Laura Matsuda, while forming an allyship with sumo E. Honda, with whose power and form Zangief deeply respects.

New look, just as deadly...

During last week's State of Play presentation, we finally, FINALLY got our first look at combatant Cammy White, who will once again be spinning up a storm in Capcom's upcoming scrapper Street Fighter 6. Fans had been eagerly anticipating Street Fighter?? veteran's trailer from as far back as Summer 2022, and the British special forces agent certainly proved well worth the wait.

Cammy made her debut in 1993's smash hit Super Street Fighter II, becoming the second woman to be part of the iconic fighting game's roster. Hailing from England, Cammy fast became one of the most popular characters in the Street Fighter universe, only bringing more and more fans into the flock with each subsequent appearance. Ms. White's lore is long and twisted, and has seen her operating as a brai?nwashed "doll" or Shadaloo, an amnesiac MI6 operative, and now �fully in control of her identity and destiny �works as an agent of black ops outfit Delta Red, seeking out injustice and ensuring swift execution.

Cammy has not only featured in almost all incarnations of the Street Fighter timeline, (including appearances in the X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom titles), but she also appeared in the 1994 Street Fighter II anime, as well as the live-action film of the same year, famously played by Australian actor and musician Kylie Minogue. A key figure in SF lore, Cammy remains? a quiet, introverted, ??but noble and honest fighter, showing compassion and care for her fellow days and even seemingly offering a tentative ceasefire on their tormenter, the former S.I.N. assassin Juri.

The trailer sees Cammy forgo her classic bodysuit and beret for a more casual, undercover look, complete with a Union Jack emblazoned biker jacket and shorn of her iconic pigtails. Gameplay-wise, Cammy is still packing the tools that made her arguably the best character in Street Fighter V, from her trademark Cannon Spike and Cannon Drill, to her dizzying Spin Knuckle?, her confusing Hooligan Combinatio?n, and various attacks performed at low, mid, high, and mid-air opportunities. As a nice tribute to her past, Cammy's air super her sees her apply the same assassination technique demonstrated in the SFII anime, cartwheeling over her opponent before plating her knees in their spine for a brutal Dragon Sleeper.

There hasn't been Street Fighter title released that hasn't benefitted from Cammy's appearance, and clearly, Street Fighter 6 is set to be no exception. Lock On!

Eyes of the Hawk, Strength of the Bear

As part of last night's Sony State of Play presentation, Capcom offered up a new trailer for its upcoming scrapper sequel Street Fighter 6, rounding out the cast of 18 World Warriors that will be launching with the title co??me June ??6 �As part of the new preview, we got our very first in-game look at the initial roster's final newcomer, Lily.

Hailing from Mexico, Lily is a young and spritely fighter, whose small stature and cute appearance belies a power that has been honed through the ages. Lily is a descendant of the Thunderfoot tribe, the very same community that has previously brought us Street Fighter veteran T. Hawk. And, as such, L??ily is at one with herself, with nature, and with the ecology of the planet itself, traveling the globe and surmounting challenges as guided by her own sentient spirit.

While Lily's trailer was a little short on action, we can already see that her diminutive size makes her an agile and acrobatic fighter, able to compensate for her short range with her weighted club weaponry. Long-time Street Fighter fans will see familiarity in Lily's airborne activities, which features variants of T. Hawk's powerful Condor Spire and Condor Dive abilities. Also at one with the wind, Lily can also send her opponent whirling with her own version of her ancestor's Mexican Typhoon, although it appears that the Lvl. 3 version of the move gets a little ou?t of control, bringing our girl crashing down on top of the hapless oppo??nent.

Also of note, a strange but amusing instance where Lily takes out an old-fashioned camera and snaps a pic of Blanka, briefly blinding the Brazilian beast. This looks more to be a cute easter egg rather than an actual special, but it might have its own amusing uses, much like Dudley's rose toss. Lily looks to combine the power of a grappler with the speed of a much smaller character, and as such will be a very intriguing character to watch in early days of Street Fighter 6.

What's your Gear Score, Gamers?

Rocksteady is a fantastic developer, make no bones about it, and I'll gladly argue that we might never get a comic-book adaptation in gaming to rival the immersions, emotion, and raw, genre-defining impact of the amazing Batman: Arkham trilogy �But last night's gameplay overview of the studio's long, long in development Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League ??left me and others in the gaming community less than enthused.

Spotlit as the centerpiece of the Sony State of Play presentation Suicide Squad received a brand new trailer, as well as a more in-depth gameplay overview, showing off the characters, mechanics, and hook of the "Good-to-be-Bad" comic book adventure. Unfortunately, while the title undoubtedly featured some great visuals, cool character designs, and a neatly constructed world, it also appears drowned in by-the-book, focus-tested, corporate-approved ??Video Game Features typical of the much-maligned "Games as a Service" model. A model readily enthused by publisher Warner Bros. Games.

Suicide Squad is a very specific brand. It is a brand based around anarchic anti-heroes and straight-up scumbags. We aren't talking top-tier precision commandos, we're talking the last hurrah. Idiots with guns, amoral losers sent to take care of the work that nobody else wants to do. As such, lumbering them with the most conservative ??model in gaming is the antithesis of the very vibe the franchise embodies.

Captain Boomerang and his iconic *checks notes* assault rifle, Harley Quinn famously ensuring that she is wearing the jacket that provids a 0.6% increase in Grenade Drop Potential. There's something just so insidiously corporate about a screen that features "Social" "Store" and "Battle Pass" tabs all on the same banner, propped up by a woeful mish-mash of numbers, "Common-Epic" gear status, unlockable mod slots, and menus within menus within menus, all summarised by Suicide Squad's eye-rolling moniker of "Gear Score".

Yo, bro, what's your Gear Score?

Of course, I'll readily admit that the proof of the pudding is in the eating. And I'll gladly check out Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League on release. After all, Rocksteady has more than proven its pedigree with a history of fantastic games. I have no doubt that this release will look fantastic and play well. But there's something so rote, so tepid, just so bland about getting bogged down with the numbers. And while many video games have previously followed the gear-laden, GaaS model to mostly mixed results, it's not a model that gels with the Suicide Squad �Hell, it similarly failed to gel with The Avengers, and we know how that story turned out.

We're right to have faith in Rocksteady as the designers of a gameplay experience, but I'm not entirely convinced that we should necessarily have similar faith in their masters. This is a publisher that did its damndest to make "gear" and multi-currencies a key element of a one-on-one fighter, and thus, I can't picture a single suit that is looking at Suicide Squad and thinking, "Hmm... we're really getting away from the spirit of these characters". It was also recently revealed that Suicide Squad has an Always-Online policy, even ??for single-player mode, a methodology that simply refuses to hit the brick??s.

I rarely comment so harshly on a game before its launch. Barely ever. And, as always, I'm more than happy to be proven wrong, and will gladly eat my words if so. But, like many video game fans, I'm just tired, nay, exhausted at these thin efforts to disguise cash registers as Cool Dude Video Games. With certain brands and IPs, it can be a little easier to keep the more money-hungry elements tucked away in the shadows, but when applied to something supposedly as anti-establishment as Suicide Squad, it hits you square on the dome like a comical??ly oversized mallet.

VR, fighting, adventuring, and some superhero co-op

Sony has just wrapped its first State of Play for 2023, showing off what's in store for the PlayStation 5 and its newly released ?PlayStation VR2 headset. There were some usual ??suspects, but also a decent number of pleasant surprises.

From the release date and console debut of Baldur's Gate 3 to that wild, wacky-looking new Enhance game, there were definitely a few reveals that caught us off guard. Other parts of the State of Play were a little more what you'd expect, but even then, I'm not going to turn my nose up at more Street Fighter 6 footage, especially with both Zangief and Cammy looking fantastic in the ??new entry.

Here's all the news to know from today's show.

Everything shown in the February 2023 State of Play

• Virtual reality took the stage first with The Foglands, a shooting gallery-style game with some card elements in play. It's definitely got a bit of a look to it. This was followed by survival game Green Hell VR, first-person shooter Synapse, and Asimov-adaptation Journey to the Foundation.
• It's a decent block for folks who just picked up a new VR2 headset and are looking to some new games to play, but I'd like to draw special attention to Before Your Eyes, a captivating game that was playable through webcams already, and will likely be even more emotional and special in a VR2 headset. That arrives on March 10.

• Destiny 2 gets a trailer for its imminent Lightfall expansion, showcasing all the weird space-magic happenings set to take place in Neomuna. I'm once again drawn into the Destiny 2 expansion hype, I'm afraid.

• There are some indie gems lying in wait every year, and I have a feeling Tchia is one of them. This action-adventure game lets you shift into animals and explore a beautiful world, inspired by real-life New Caledonia. I love the art style and mechanics, and it just genuinely seems like a pleasant experience. Subscribers to PlayStation Plus' higher tiers also get a bonus, as Tchia takes the Stray route of launching Day 1 on PS Plus Extra and Premium. Tchia is out on March 21, 2023.

• Humanity is difficult to describe, and I mean that for both the game and, you know, all of us. This new game from Enhance has you taking on the form of a glowing Shiba Inu, leading flocks of humankind through strange levels. I could try to describe it more, but why not try it yourself? A limited-time demo is available today. The full game arrives in May.
• Dino-teen drama machine Goodbye Volcano High returns to State of Play, and still looks to bear all the narrative emotion amid an impending meteor impact. Even as someone not too wild about the designs, I'm incredibly impressed by the animation work and storytelling devices being used here. Narrative fans might want to keep an eye on this one when it launches on June 15.
• Confession: I have only ever seen one episode of Naruto, the first one. Didn't do a ton for me. But I do love some Ultimate Ninja Storm, so I was very excited to see Naruto x Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections appear during the State of Play today. It's set to combine pivotal moments from the first four Storm games, and have new playable characters alongside the 124 ninjas from the past. That is a lot of ninjas.
• Here's a surprise: Baldur's Gate 3 is coming to PlayStation 5, day-and-date with the PC and Mac launch. So not only do we get a release date of August 31 for Larian's take on the Baldur's Gate series, we also get a console version with confirmed cross-progression, and JK Simmons voicing one of the big antagonists. Rad!

• AIrship Syndicate's Wayfinder shows off some of its action co-op gameplay, detailing how players can team up to take on enemies in dangerous areas. A friend remarked to me that this reminds them of Dauntless, and they're not totally off-base. A beta is going live on Feb. 28 for those who want to check it out.
• Street Fighter 6 takes the stage to spotlight three characters. Zangief's looking even more muscle-bound and powerful than ever, newcomer Lily has the spirits on her side, and Cammy is back to break some backs. The next Street Fighter keeps looking great, and June 2 feels just too far away.
• Also here from Capcom is Resident Evil 4 Remake, showing off more gameplay footage. Leon's refreshed journey is just a month away at this point, but Capcom confirms there's a "special demo" on the way for those who can't wait.
• Lastly, we close the show with some detailed gameplay footage and discussion of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. There's a good glimpse of the co-op action these four anti-heroes will get up to, and Rocksteady's still locked in for its release date of May 26. The big surprise arrives at the end as Wonder Woman herself decks the Brainiac-controlled Flash and demands answers. Turns out we will, actually, have to Kill the Justice League.

As part of Sony’s State of Play, Capcom dropped a trailer showing off some more Street Fighter 6 characters in action. All of these characters were part of the art leak, so try and look surprised.

First up, we have veteran Zangief. This wrestleman will be a welcome sight to anyone who likes to roll their joystick around. Also, anyone who has an appreciat?ion for chest hair. The trailer shows off his spinning lariats, drop kicks, and ridiculous pil?edriver.

Next up is Lily. Hailing from Mexico, Lily is one of the new char??acters for the series. She’s a lot more subdued than the raging Russian. She calls on the spirit of the wind but then also blinds Blanka with a camera.

Finally, there’s Cammy, who has decided to show up in more than just a bathing suit. She also comes equipped with a wide selec??tion of kicks, includin??g her signature Cannon Drill.

Tokyo commute

As part of the State of Play today, the next game from Res Infinite developer Enhance was announced with a May 2023 window. Humanity looks like an abstract mix of Pikmin and Lemmings.

In Humanity, you play as a dog-thing that leads an absolute fleet of generic humans ??through geometric stages. The trailer showed off obstacles s?uch as water, fans, and even opposing fleets of humans. On top of the adventure included in the game, you’re able to create and share your own levels.

The whole aesthetic reminds me of PS2-era Japanese games. It’s an abstract gameplay-first concept that you rarely see in the mainstream. Humanity is coming to PS4 ????PS5 sometime in May and as support for both versions of PSVR. A demo for it will be dropping today.

This new stream looks focused on third-party games

A new State o?f Play is on the way, spotlighting upcoming games for Sony's consoles. The PlayStation State of Play airs on Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT.

The focus for this stream looks to be third-party titles. Sony will kick things off with some looks at "anticipated" games from its third-party partners, including indie??s. Five new PlayStation VR2 titles are also due to be announced.

Then, we'll get over 15 minutes of new gameplay details and updates on Rocksteady's upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. No estimated runtime was given, though it sounds at least somewhat lengthy from the amount of Suicide Squad alone.

The year ahead for PlayStation

This PlayStation State of Play is the first of the year for Sony, and looks set to spotlight what's on the way for its hardware, both in the PlayStation 5 and the imminent PlayStation VR2.

We've already seen 2023 kick-off streams from both Xbox and Nintendo. So with this stream, Sony is taking the opportunity to set the tone for ??its year ahead.

With that in mind, the lack of first-party games here does feel a bit surprising. We don't really know what Sony's first-party lineup looks like for 2023, outside an assumption that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will play a part in it.

Still, Sony State of Play streams have had some surprises before, and the third-party developers could bring some surprises. There are other games we've yet to hear more about due out later this year, including Street Fighter 6 and Final Fantasy XVI, both of which have featured in Sony's prev?ious streams.

PlayStation VR2 is also front-of-mind for Sony, it seems. With five games, that will make up at ??least a decent chunk of the stream, and probably be exciting for anyone picking up the new headset this week. We'll see what all Sony has in store for its PlayStation State of Play on Feb. 23.

Another action RPG (like that's a bad thing)

Depending on how you slice it, the highlight of today's State of Play was either Like a Dragon: Ishin from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio or Rise of the Ronin from Team Ninja. (Why not both?) The developer shared its first look at this PS5 open-world action RPG, which is seven ye??ars in the making. It's another historical-inspired tale with over-the-top flair, as you'll quickly see in the trailer �a mix of "gameplay and in-game cinematics."

"Set in the late 19th century, Japan is facing the darkest of times as it struggles with its oppressive rulers and deadly diseases while western influence permeates as civil war continues to rage between the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Anti-Shogunate factions," noted director Fumihiko Yasuda. "Here in this time of mayhem, you embody a Ronin character, a warrior bou??nd to no master and free to make choices of its o??wn."

Going a step further, Yasuda calls Rise of the Ronin the "most ambitious and challenging project for Team Ninja Studio to date," promising a "multilayered story" and "unrestricte??d open gameplay." The action-game fundamentals can always get this team's foot in the door for me �so while I'm alrea?dy "in," so to speak, I am curious to hear concrete info.

For now, there's tha?t cool glider and rifle-stabbing animation. I love a good finisher. From everything we can glean, this looks like another skillful action romp. Keep 'em coming.

Rise of the Ronin will launch in 2024 and it's said to be a "PlayStation 5 console exclusive," which opens the do??or for a (well-advise??d) PC version.

Considering Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty (the Three Kingdoms-inspired Nioh successor) is coming up first in 2023, that far-off? timing makes sense. We're feasting as action fiends.

Pre-orders open on September 27

We aren't yet at a point where Sony is slinging game-themed PS5 consoles like in the PS4 days, but at least God of War fans are getting a special controller variant. Announced during this afternoon's State of Play, Sony will release a God of War Ragnarok DualSense controller for PS5 on November 9, 2022 �the same day Ragnarok is out on PS4/PS5.

The white and blue DualSense controller has a bear and wolf insignia to represent Kratos and Atreus, according to Sony. It's a nice contrast to the lighter Starlight Blue model.

Funny enough, for a split second, I thought this was going to be the State of Play's closer, which goes to show how low my expectations tend to be for these showings. Instead, the controller tidbit just led into our fullest-yet look at God of War Ragnarok's story with a new trailer, and yep, it looks awesome. The weight of the story is finally sinking in.

I've got too many of these gamepads as is (three, somehow!), but I'm sure this will sell out fast. Pre-orders for the God of War Ragnarok DualSense begin on September 27.

A price hasn't been listed yet, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a bit of a?? premium over the $70-$75 tag for the current DualSense colorways.

The other bodysuited hack 'n' slash gal

During today's State of Play presentation, developer Shift Up released a new gameplay trailer for its previously teased hack 'n' slash adventure Project EVE, which has now been officially titled Stellar Blade. It will launch as a PS5 exclusive at some po??int in 2023.

Previously shown off during a State of Play presentation one year ago, Stellar Blade follows a powerful mercenary, Eve, as she spearheads a mission to bring humanity back to Earth, following a violent expulsion at the?? claws of a monstrous force known as "NA:tives." It is up to Eve and her military friends to take back Earth from its occupiers.

Equipped with amazing acrobatic ability and cybernetic weaponry, Eve will slice 'n' dice her way through an army of enemies, while upgrading her weapons, skills, combat maneuvers, and high fashion with the expenditure of gathered XP, which in the Stellar Blade universe is known as "Beta Gauge." It looks suitably flashy and action-packed, with an opulent and special-effect-packed presentation style. One worth keeping an eye on for the Devil May Cry and Bayonetta crowd methinks.

Stellar Blade will launch exclusively on PS5 in 2023. Next year is filling up ??fast.

Can you survive the road to hell?

We've seen lots of driving games over the years, but for the most part, their gameplay focuses on racing, demolition derbies, or navigating a large open world map. Pacific Drive is a new run-based, first-person driving survival game, the debut title from Seattle-based Ironwood Studios. The developers behind this new project have worked on classics like Ratchet & Clank, Mortal Kombat, Call of Duty, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and many more. Pacific Drive was revealed today during the PlayStation State of Play, and featured a heart-pounding dr??ive through dark, desolate woods. It seems there is a mystery afoot, and the only way to figure it out is to drive ??towards it.

"Your car is your only companion as you navigate a surreal and anomaly-filled reimagining of the Pacific Northwest," says the description on the game's official website. "Structured as a 'road-like,' each excursion into the wilderness brings unique and strange challenges, as you restore and upgrade your car from an abandoned gara?ge that acts as your home base. With the car as your lifeli??ne, you’ll unravel a long-forgotten mystery as you make your way to the heart of the Olympic Exclusion Zone."

While much of Pacific Drive remains a mystery, I have to admit that this is one of the most unique premises I've seen at these game showcases as of late. Government secrets, spooky monsters, and some kind of supernatural weather phenomenon? Looks like a recipe for a classic, edge-of-your-seat adventure. I'm usually pretty bad at driving mechanics in games, so I think I'll probably need to brush up a bit before Pacific Drive finally releases.

Pacific Drive will be coming to PlayStation 5 and PC sometim??e in 2023. Until then, I'll be on the lookout for any more updates, because this is certainly one I'll be looking forwar?d to.

Talk about kicking things off with a bang �PlayStation began its State of Play live stream with the official reveal of Bandai Namco's next entry to its legendary 3D fight franchise, Tekken. Tekken 8 is currently in development "exclusively" for PS5, PC, and?? Xbox Series X/S.

The very attractive trailer saw long-time rivals and troubled father-son duo Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima battle it out amidst a raging storm. In what appeared to be a blend of cinematic visuals and real-time gameplay, the footage sure looked like Tekken, albeit with an absolutely stunning new look.

A short, sharp burst from La Casa PlayStation

Remember when we just had E3? Essentially a fortnight of reveals, updates, and surprises as they relate to all things gaming? Well, today, E3 is now 12 months long... And it's not called E3 anymore. And E3 isn't even involved. Is this?? better, or is this worse? I guess it's just a matter of perspective... Where was I?

Ah yes, here on Destructoid, and welcoming you, our beloved community to today's surprise PlayStation State of Play presentation, dropped upon us with less than 24 hours' notice, and ready to rock our worlds with 20 minutes of news and updates pertaining to several titles headed to platforms PS4, PS5, and PSVR2. While Sony is tight-lipped on the content of today's stream, we can expect around 10 games in all �and given the relative shortness of the show, it's probably gonna be a bit o??f a trailer fest.

And so, we'd like you all to join us for the State of Play, which kicks off 30 minutes from now. We will, as always, be bringing you all of the hot news right here on site, but it's always fun to sit in the peanut gallery and offer your thoughts on Sony's reveals. What's coming? FromSoft news? A new Street Fighter 6 character reveal? The Callisto Protocol release date? Blood & Truth 2?

Sony is joining the list of publishers rolling out a showcase this week. A new State of Play is set to? air tomorrow, September 13, with updates on all things ??PlayStation.

Announced just 24 hours ahead of its air time, the Sony State of Play will go live at 6 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. PT on Sony's Twitch and YouTube channels.

In its announcement, Sony notes that the Tokyo Game Show is just around the corner. For the State of Play, Sony says to expect some updates from its Japanese partners, along with a "few? other surprises" from developers around the world.

The show is expected to come in at about 20 minutes of reveals, new updates,? and gameplay for 10 games. Platform-wise, Sony identifies the PlayStation 5, ??PS4, and PlayStation VR 2.

The week to come in showcase streams

This puts Sony at the opposite end of tomorrow's news cycle from Nintendo, which is hosting its September Nintendo Direct at 7 a.m. PT / 10 a.m. ET.

In the week ahead, several more publishers and developers are planning streams for the Tokyo Game Show ?2022. Square Enix, Capcom, Konami, Bandai Namco, and more will all host streams throughout the week.

As for what Sony still has to show, there are several games in its own studio pipeline. God of War Ragnarok is currently aiming for its launch in November, whil?e other ??projects like Insomniac's Marvel games are further down the line.

Japanese partners could cover a broad swath as well. Square Enix has made several State of Play appearances, as has Capcom. With just about 20 minutes set fo?r this Sony State of Play, across 10, it will probably be?? a pretty fast and to-the-point show.

Running Up That Hill

For those of you still exploring the luscious-but-deadly pastures of Horizon Forbidden West, Guerrilla Games has a brand new update for you. As revealed during last week's Sony State of Play presentation, U??pdate 1.14 brings new several new features and modes to the stunning open-world adventure.

First and perhaps foremost, Horizon Forbidden West update 1.14 adds the much-requested New Game+ mode for ??those who have already completed Aloy's adventure. These players can now restart the story,?? locked and loaded with gear, skills, and abilities for a low-intensity run through the epic campaign. For those who wish to press themselves further forward, the new Ultra Hard difficulty option will test your hunting and acrobatic skills to the absolute limit.

For players who feel they may have perhaps focused Aloy's growing talents in the wrong areas, the new Respec option will rebank all of your acquired skill points, allowing for a fresh build on Aloy's skill tree. And for the fashion-forward, the new Transmog option will allow you to select any of your gathered gear (including all respective effects) while retaining the visual appearance of any other outfit. So if you have a favorite look for yer girl, then you can keep on rocking that visual style regardless of your actual equipped clothing, armour, and ??headgear.
