So long to a troubled, but memorable iteration

[One of the community's most dedicated fighting game fans, Virtua Kazama, prepared a few words for the departure of Capcom's Street Fighter V, a game which will be remained for its notorious launch and divisive gameplay, but also for creating great tournament moments and, ultimately turning its fortunes around. - Moyse]

Street Fighter Vwhere do I begin?

Seems just like yesterday when I wrote a blog about saying goodbye to SFIV, you came out with a rocky start. I remember ba?ck in 2016 while I was working at Best Buy that I got the game and played it despite how barebones the game came out. The game didn’t have a proper story mode until a few months later and that wasn’t good either. ??For the casual players, they didn’t get enough content, but the competitive players got what they needed.

The main gameplay mechanic that was introduced in SFV was the V-System, which gave three skills to use: V-Skill, V-Trigger, and V-Reversal. All of them use the V-Meter, which is completely separate from the Super meter. The base roster gave us 16 characters, including the mainstays returning from SFIV (Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Zangief, M. Bison (Dictator), Vega (Claw), Dhalsim, and Cammy), bra?nd new characters (Necalli, Rashid, F.A.N.G., and Laura), and characters we haven’t seen in years (Birdie, Karin, R. Mika, and Charlie Nash).

A year before the release, us fans were able to try the game out through the beta, and yes: the beta would have some issues to work out in terms of online connectivity. But the gameplay did give us some concerns because it felt different compared to SFIV. For some, it was refreshing, because we didn’t have to deal with the Focus Attacks and Ultras anymore, but for others, they weren’t t?oo big a fan about the new gameplay itself.

It was a time when Street Fighter V went full speed on the eSports experience, having the game appear on tournaments on big networks like ESPN 2 and TBS for example. Yeah, EVO 2016 airing on ESPN 2 was a huge deal and it was a time to sh?ow the? world what the FGC is made of.

It also had th??????????????????????????e highest number of entrants, with 5,000+ players at EVO 2016.

??//www.youtube.?com/watch?v=ljUonlW402Q&list=PLtQAiM1Y5luzZFPzuERYfWu3RsXF5spdc

Looking back, it was a mixed emotion. It had both the good with the FGC support, but it also had the bad with the casual fans that have been around since the beginning or newcomers who just want to have fun. I personally admit that I’ve lost my way as well since I thought that it was going to be the new wave for the future of fighting ga?mes and I was wrong. Casual players were left high and dry due to the lack of? single-player content that it had when it first came out.

It wasn’t until 2018 that things were about to turn around with Arcade Edition. The game received major changes from brand new moves, a fixed online experience, a revamped training mode, brand new interface graphics, two brand new gameplay modes, a second V–Trigger that everyone can use, and more. The best part about it is that it was a free update for those who already own SFV, which made it easier for us because we didn’t want to buy an update unless we wanted to play the game on PC or another console. Then again, it was only released for the PS4 and PC, followed by an coin-op release one year later with Street Fighter V: Type Arcade.

I do recall a time when SFV: Arcade Edition was out, there was an issue with the online play since Capcom attempted to try Rollback Netcode for the first time, and then someone from Brazil was able to fix the netcode without issue. Online issues aside, SFV: Arcade Edition was a total improvement over the first iteration of SFV. But it would not be the end.

Two years later, we would see the release of Street Fighter V: Champion Edition. This would include an option to select a second V-Skill, as well as more balances and changes. Once Season 5 was released, we were later introduce??d to another gameplay c?hange with the V-Shift ability, which would serve as a predecessor to a certain mechanic that would later be used in a future game which should be out sooner than later.

Even when COVID hit, the game still managed to survive without issue as well. Capcom Pro Tour was relegated to online tournaments until 2022 when the situation became better. The final Capcom Cup for SFV happened on February 19, 2023 with Capcom Cup XI where MenaRD represented the Dominican Republic and won the tournament. It was hype overall!

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=maxQhSYcMwI

Let’s also take a look at how much the roster evolved. Season 1, we had a lot of returning characters such as Balrog, Guile, Ibuki, and Juri returning from SF4, while two characters that we haven’t seen in a long time, Alex and Urien from SFIII, made their triumphant return.

Season 2, we had one returning character in the form of Akuma (Gouki), the official debuts of Ed (who appeared in SFIV as part of Balrog’s ending), Zeku (who first appeared in Street Fighter Alpha 2 as an NPC) and Kolin (Gill’s assistant from SFIII), the official debut of Menat (who was introduced to this game), and we saw the addition of Abigail, who was a boss character in Final Fight.

By the time Season 3 came out, we also saw more fan-favorite characters return such as Blanka, Cody, Sagat, and Sakura (all returning from SFIV), while we saw the official debut of Falke and G. Season 4 saw more returning characters such as E. Honda, Poison and Seth (returning from SF4), the epic return of Gill from SFIII, the debut of Kage (another alter-ego of Ryu), and the addition of Lucia from Final Fight 3.

Lastly, when Season 5 came out, we had the return of Dan and Rose (returning from SFIV), the debut of Eleven (who is a prototype of Twelve from SFIII), the epic return of Oro from SFIII, the addition of Akira from Rival Schools (complete with her brother Daigo), and the debut of Luke, who would later become the new protagonist for Street Fighter 6. Overall, we ended Champion Edition with 46 characters total!

As we say goodbye to Street Fighter V, we will remember the good times and the challenging tim??es that it had. I admit that ?the game didn’t have a proper launch the way it was intended and that it could have been a lot better if it had more content at launch, but it did allow them to learn several lessons from the developer’s side such as listening to the feedback from both the casual and competitive communities.

Always remember that you can never leave the casu??al fans who don’t play fighting games competitively behind. It took you two updates, but you managed to improve over time and, ultimately, survive it all.

Street Fighter 6It’s now your time to shine!

Strive, Street Fighter, Tekken, and The King of Fighters will fill the Sunday finals

The Evolution Championship Series, a.k.a. Evo, has relea?sed its final registration tally. The final numbers for each game, as well as which four make it into the Evo 2022 arena finals on Sunday, are now l??ocked in.

Registration closed last week, with nine games in the main Evo 2022 lineup: Street Fighter V, Guilty Gear Strive, Mortal Kombat 11, Tekken 7, The King of Fighters XV, Melty Blood Type Lumina, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Granblue Fantasy Versus, and Skullgirls.

In the final tally, Guilty Gear Strive took the ??top spot at Evo 2022. The latest entry in Arc System Works' fighting game series raked in a whopping 2,161 registered combatants.

Joining Strive for the Sunday finals are two fairly presumptive games, Street Fighter V and Tekken 7. The latest King of Fighters takes the fourth spot, with 1,014 en?trants registered to compe?te.

//twitter.com/EVO/status/1549127118356873216

While those four will be featured in the arena finals, all nine games are part of the Evo 2022 main stage lineup. Of course, if you prefer some of the more niche and rare tournaments, there are always side events. Everything from Them's Fightin' Herds and Soulcalibur to Catherine can usually find a spot to compete.

The true king of fighters

Evo 2022 will be a big year for Evo, as it returns under new ownership. While there has been Evo Online, this will be the first in-person Evo since the tournament series was jointly acquired by Sony and RTS.

So far, that hasn't meant much has changed. Super Smash Bros. will not be part of the main game lineup this year, though the statement read like that was Nintendo's choice.

Street Fighter 6 will, however, be on display and open for competitors to test out. I'm personally hoping there's a way to catch some show matches or something during the weekend. We can probably ??expect some fighting game news that weekend too, as is tradition.

Evo 2022 will run from? August 5 through 7 at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay resort.

Fighting Back

In 2021, Capcom released two exclusive charity skins for its formative fighter Street Fighter V /em> The skins, which were made available for franchise heroes Ryu and Chun-Li, were sold for $5.99 each, with Capcom promising to donate all proceeds of the sales to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).

Yesterday, the publisher revealed that it had raised an impressive total of $75,000 USD for the Street Fighter V skins, money which Capc??om states equates to around 1500 hours of research into the detection and curing of breast cancer, which remains one of the most predominant forms of the cellular disease, affecting millions of women across the globe each and every year.

//twitter.com/Stree?tFighter/status/1537540682704879617?s??=20&t=Drwti_cr2yV805WNH0oUdw

"This year, breast cancer became the most common cancer worldwid??e, impacting 2.3 million people," said BCRF President Myra Biblowit during the 2021 campaign. "The need for better, more effective treatments have never been greater. We’re grateful for the opportunity to highlight this critical need through Capcom’s wide reach. Through this partnership, we are pois?ed to make a direct and tangible impact on advancing lifesaving science together."

The character skins, which were only made available to purchase for exactly one month, saw Ryu and Chun proudly donning the pink, white, and black color scheme of the BCRF, with an alternative design that reversed the colors on ?each character's costume. Capcom had previously promised a minimum donation of $25,000, regardless of sales, so to smash that target by a further $50,000 is a brilliant result. Hopefully, this donation will aid the BCRF in its enduring and tireless e?fforts to improve the detection, treatment, and eventual eradication of the disease.

If you’d like to learn more about the foundation and its work, or make a contribution directly to the cause, please visit the official Breast Cancer Research Foun??dation website??.

Monster Hunter has the top spot, but Resident Evil spreads the wealth

Resident Evil Village sales numbers have been touted by Capcom for a while now, but thanks to a refresh of the ?"Platinum Titles" investo??r relations page, we have an updated look at how it stacks up to everything else. The Capcom all-time seller list still has Monster Hunter: World in a commanding lead, but there's plenty of Resident Evil to go around.

The vast majority of the list has stayed the same, with one notable exception. So Monster Hunter: Rise jumped up from a previous spot of number seven overall to number five. This pushed down Resident Evil 5 and 6, which both remain on the list. Resident Evil Village managed to crack the top 10 previously and had sales figures of 5.7 million units, and now it pushed up to 6.10, further poised to take the ninth spot from Street Fighter V. It's just a matter of time.

I expect the next update to shake things up a bit more. We could see the Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak DLC take up a spot with its own SKU, and it'll be bolstered by a dual launch on both PC and Switch.

Capcom all-time seller list as of May 18, 2022:

  1. Monster Hunter: World: 18 million units
  2. Resident Evil 7: 10.8m
  3. Resident Evil 2 (Remake): 9.6m
  4. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne: 9.2m
  5. Monster Hunter Rise: 9m
  6. Resident Evil 5: 8.2m
  7. Resident Evil 6: 8.2m
  8. Street Fighter II: 6.3m
  9. Street Fighter V: 6.2m
  10. Resident Evil Village: 6.1m

Wiping that smug off his handsome mug

[Update: Since this article went live, some readers have voiced the displeasure with me referring to Luke as a "Twink". I apologize unreservedl??y. Luke is, in actuality, a "Twunk".]

Capcom has released a new balance update to its flagship fighting title Street Fighter V. The update, now live on both PlayStation and PC, adds a selection of buffs and nerfs to many? members of the title's huge roster, but p??ays specific attention to franchise newcomer and all-round punching machine, Luke.

Luke, designed as a sort of "sneak peek" at Street Fighter 6, is an incredibly low-risk/high-reward character packed out a veritable roadmap of melee options, while also having excellent confirms, a devastating long-range attack, and the ability to not only increase his damage power, but to keep it increased, provided that the hard-punching twink is stil?l raining blows down on yer noggin.

In response to community complaints that Luke is already dominating both online and tournament play with some of the best Street Fighter players in the world even admitting th??at Luke is exceptionally powerful Capcom's latest patch hopes to calm down yer boy's hot-headed MMA rampage.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=966CwMZPkdI

The update reduces the distance of Luke's space-controll?ing M. Sand Blaster, increases the stopblock frames of his St. LP and most importantly increases the recovery of his Cr. MK and resizes the hurtbox on his St. MK. These are two buttons that Luke can generally toss out without fea?r, and can lead to V-Trigger activation or any manner of health-draining combos on connection.

Luke will remain a very strong character among the Street Fighter roster, even with these tweaks, but the changes will increase his vulnerability somewhat, increasing the risk on his neutral game and slightly decreasing his space control when distanced. Given that Luke is offered as a supposed "example" of SF 6's playstyle, one would assume that Capcom's current interest in hig?h damage characters is set to carry forward into the legendary fight franchise's next iteration.

You can check out the full patch notes over on the official Capcom website. You can also read our article about Capcom's revised Community Guideline rules for hosting Street Fighter V tournaments right here.

Me & Juri are coming for you, one last time

What a week for fighting game fans. We have Testament joining Guilty Gear Strive, Rugal joining The King of Fighters XV, a new open beta for DNF Duel, and, rounding out the good times, the last-for-realsies update for Capcom's Street Fighter V dropping today on PlayStation and PC.

The Street Fighter V Definitive Update brings with it one last round of major balance tweaks and bug fixes, setting up the enormous roster of 46 World Warriors with one last run of buffs and nerfs for their final round. The changes, as detailed in the patch notes, range from damage increases and frame reductions to entirely new link and cancel options, opening the door for a brand new wave of tech for SFV's twilight year. Bones have finally, finally been thrown to stragglers such as Juri and Alex.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qcZVy8ZG_k

In addition to the balance changes, two new filter options have been added to SFV's offline mode, these consist of a pretty hideous "Pixel" filter, that kind of recalls a burned-out graphics card, and, conversely, a gorgeous "Cel-Shaded" filter, that boosts color impact and highlights comic-book style shading... In a way I kinda wish Street Fighter V had always looked closer to this, but oh well. Unf??????????????????????????ortunately, the cel-shade mod cannot be used during online play, but it still looks lovely for all your Trai??ning and Survival needs.

Oh, and speaking of training, the popular "Track Suit" skin has now received a full palette of color options. Meanwhile, various music tracks have been remixed and added to the SFV score.

And with this, (save for any remaining bug tweaks), Street Fighter V steps into the ring for its final turn in the spotlight before the arrival of its successor Street Fighter 6 expected to hit the scene in 2023. This is my and Juri's last opportunity to get into SFV Platinum, which has always been o?ur modest, long-term goal. Honestly, We've just got to hold on to what we've got. It doesn't make a difference if we make it or not. We've got each other, and that's a lot.

For love... We'll give it a shot.

This is the Last Rouuuund...

And so, this is it. After six years of tumultuous fighting action, Street Fighter V is preparing for its last round as a premier fighting game favorite To this end, Capcom has released a new trailer teasing the game's final update bringing with it a major balance overhaul, as well as a few other fun?? featur?es.

The meat of the new update will see exciting new game??play options presented to almost every character on the roster. More than just a few simple frame tweaks, the changes detailed in the video below will open up a host of previously impossible opportunities to the cast of Worl?d Warriors from character beginners to their most expert players.

The changes range from new link options and moves cancels, to amazing inclusions such as new target combos, new EX effects, a re-stand ability for Juri, an OTG from throw for Rose, and additional charge options for Gil's projectiles. Some of these tweaks will truly shake up SFV's gameplay for?? its twilight year, and one can't help but wish that some of these ideas were implemented long ago.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qcZVy8ZG_k

The tweet below, posted by FGC veteran HiFight, breaks down so?me of the featured balance changes.

In addition to the fresh round of balancing, Street Fighter V is receiving two new visual filters. The first is a crisp 'n' sexy "Cel-Shaded" affair, which gives the characters a new look similar to that featured in Marvel vs. Capcom 3. A second "pixel" filter will bedeck the characters in an eye-searing CRT style, reminiscent of Street Fighters of yore?. It appears that these filters are for offline use only.

Each character will receive a full range of color options for the "Track Suit" skin. While not the most exciting of in-game costumes, the Track Suit is a very popular, and oft-?seen skin in online unranked fights, so it's great to see a full palette of color options for the velour nightmare. Finally, several in-games tunes are set to receive "Cap-Jams" remixes.

Street Fighter V's "Definitive Update" will launch on PlayStation and PC platform?s March 29.

Don't bore us, get to the chorus

Yesterday saw the coming of Luke, the final, final DLC character for Capcom's flagship slugfest, Street Fighter V. Luke sees the fighter's 46-strong roster reach its endgame, as Street Fighter V enters its twilight period. From here on out, The Fight is the Thing, as the SFV faithful continu??e to battle it, ??online and at tournies, in lieu of Capcom's next title reveal.

But y'know what's more important than that? More important than the end of season five? More important than Luke's arrival? Hell, more important than the future of Street Fighter? Finally, after five fucking years, players engaged in a Vs. set can now press Start to skip the victory screens and go straight to the end-of-match menu. Then choo??se to move on to fight two, (or three, or four,), retreat back to the menu to lick wounds, return to the lobby, or to the main menu, all without sitting through those weird-ass animations that result in Pois?on's borked smile, Ibuki's weird stretch face, Juri's hair clipping through her eye sockets, or Laura's inane win quotes.

Ahh, I hear you. It's nice to savor the moment of victory. It can even be calming to breathe in the stillness of defeat. (So I'm told, if I ever experience a defeat, I'll let you know.) Sometimes especially in long sets you just wanna get back in the ring, or back to the lobby, or back to sparring. You Just Wanna Fight. Oh, it should also be noted that both player??s have to hit Start to get the menu to a??ppear. So you can't skip forward if your opponent is choosing not to. Should both players hit start immediately after the final K.O., then you'll both be presented with the options faster.

Do it. Life's too short. Now... we just need MK 12 to include an option to skip fatality sequences. D??on't @ me.

You can check out further minor menu tweaks in the patch notes right here. Street Fighter V update 6.61 is now live on PC and PS4.

Select Your Fighter

Capcom has released the latest update for Street Fighter V, bringing with it season five's fifth DLC character, Luke, and fi??nalizing the 2016 title's roster of roustabouts, sitting at a grand total of 46 characters. The new update is now live on both PS4 and PC platforms, and weighs in at a meaty 33-35 GB. An accompanying balance patch will follow in early 2022.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=966CwMZPkdI

As discussed in last week's Street Fighter V Fall Update Showcase, Luke is an MMA superstar who is considered by Capcom to be one of the important young stars in Street Fighter's future. It is believed that Luke was actually expected to be the first all-new character set to be revealed in the next Street Fighter title, but was pulled forward for release when Capcom decided to hit SFV with one final round of DLC character additions.

As you can see from the trailer above, Luke is forgoing the powers and projectiles of his fellow fighters for a brutal, blunt instrument, CQC fighting style, chopping his opponent down with vicious flurries of punches and kicks. In his element at point-blank range, Luke can close the distance with dash attacks and fireball-defying wheel kicks, before extending his bullet-fast attack with wall-bounces and EX combo enders. Backed into a corner, any opponent trying to press the advantage against Luke is going to be in for a hurtin', as the new kid seems to be a master of pressure, not to mention turning the battle in his favor once regaining his feet. The trailer heavily emphasizes Luke's mastery of SFV's "V-Shift" mechanic this, again, suggests that the mechanic, alongside Luke, wer??e originally on deck for the series' next entry.

Luke is now live in Street Fighter V, along with season five fighters Dan, Rose, Eleven, Akira, and Oro.

Final Fighter

Capcom has announced that it will host a special fall update live stream for its top-tier fighting title Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, giving f?ans their first full gameplay br??eakdown of season five's final roster addition, Luke.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydBVToeAt8w

First revealed back in August of this year, Luke is a finely honed martial-arts champion who looks like he spends almost as much time in the tattoo parlor as he does in the gym or the ring... He is plastered in various stars, however, which seems to suggest a distinct lack of imagination. Regardless, the young lad is built like a brick shithouse, and will no doubt be bringing his MMA expertise to the world of Street Fighter V, which is now rocking a mighty roste??r of 45 combatants.

Luke's gameplay showcase will kick off on Tuesday, November 23 at 15:00 PT / 18:00 ET / 00:00 BST over on the official Capcom Twitch channel. Once Luke is released, Street Fighter V: Champion Edition's season five comes to an end, as the one-on-one fighter begins to enter its twilight phase in 2022. We can expect to hear a release date for Luke, alongside any other final content or balance details, ??during Tuesday's live stream.

In case, five years later, you're finally ready to fight

In the five years since the release of Street Fighter V, Capcom has made many DLC drops. There's been five full season passes, numerous Capcom Cup exclusives, the Story DLC, the Arcade Edition, and the Champion Edition. All of the above kind of lay??ing waste to the launch promises of single editions and "all items purchased with in-game currencies."

Well, with the fighter finally in its twilight phase, it seems that Capcom might have just announced its final really, honestly, final DLC package. The All Character Pack, which drops in Japan on December 9, will offer both the Street Fighter V: Champion Edition upgrade along with the Street Fighter V Season V Pass. So that's every single DLC character ever released for the game, along with some 23 battlegrounds, and over 200 costumes. It took five years, but if you've been waiting on an "ultimate" edition. I? guess this is it... for now.

The All Character Pack (which is currently only announced for Japan) also contains Street Fighter V's final character, newcomer pugilist Luke, alongside recent arrivals Akira, Rose, Dan, Oro, and Eleven. I dou??bt this pack can even be classed as "all" content, as it will likely not contain the Capcom Cup exclusive skins and stages. But, for the most part, this is as "Ultimate Edition" as you're going to get... Until they ann??????????????????????????ounce the Ultimate Edition in 2022, of course.

Street Fighter V is, ultimately, a great fighting game that staggered over an atrociously bumpy road populated by technical, financial, and ethical problems —in order to reach this stage, where it sits as the second highest-selling release in franchise history, raking in six million total sales. Under a new producer's direction, and capitalizing on a brand new generation of gaming hardware, here's hoping that Street Fighter VI will learn? from its predecessor's stumbling laun??ch, and instead score a massive K.O. on round one.

Ryu and Chun-Li DLC available from October 12

Capcom has partnered with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation to release two new character costumes for its flagship scrapper Street Fighter V: Champion Edition. The limited-time D??LC skins will be available to purchase from October 12 for exactly one month, with all proceeds raised from sales being donated to the BCRF and its tireless research.

"This year, breast cancer became the most common cancer worldwide, impacting 2.3 million people," said BCRF President Myra Biblowit. "The need for better, more effective treatments have never been greater. We're grateful for the opportunity to highlight this critical need through Capcom's wide reach. Through this partnership, we are poised to make a direct and tangible impact on advancing lifesaving science toge??ther."

The two new skins worn with pride by Street Fighter's iconic heroes, Ryu and Chun-Li feature the pink, white, and black ??color scheme associated with the BCRF. An alternate look reverses the color highlights for each character. Available to purchase for $5.99 each or $9.99 as a pairing, Capcom will donate 100% of the DLC's sales to the B??CRF, promising a minimum donation of at least $25,000 USD for this important cause.

Founded in 1993, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to the curing of breast cancer. All of the foundation's earnings and donations are invested in the study and research of breast cancer treatment, as well as awareness programs designed to educate the public about the disease the most predominant form of cancer in the current age. No Sequel. Only Skin.

Capcom has heard Power Stone fans loud and clear. You want a sequel? You'll get a sequel. And by "sequel", of course, they mean "A DLC skin for Street Fighter V's Ken Masters", which is heading to the flagship fight??ing game today.

The new skin sees the smart-alec Ansatsuken fighter donning the garb of Power Stone poster boy Edward Falcon, including the old-school flight gear, googles, and cravat scarf. Ironically, even though the skin changes Ken's terrible SFV hair, it still doesn't look good. Better get to the barber before SFVI, buddy. Much cooler is? the skin's hidden look, which sees Ken don Falcon's dynamic "Power Change" battle armor (should players input the correct code between rounds.)

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOCTMq0fl40

The Power Stone skin is available to purchase in Street Fighter V today, priced at around $6. The skin is also included as part of the CPT 2021 Premier Pass, which compiles the Ring of Galaxy stage, a psychedelic new costume for G, several new titles and profile themes, 10,000 FM, and a blue/gold color scheme for the entire roster,?? for $20. As always, some of the money raised from this purchase will go into the winner's pot for multi-millionaire company Capcom's Pro-Tour final.

Street Fighter V is currently in its twilight years, with just one final character to join the roster before the title begins its retirement. In related news, Capcom recently announced that the game's final balance patch has been delayed, and is now expected to arrive in M??arch 2022. That's one final chance to give Juri a break. I don't think she gon' get one.

As for Power Stone... Keep the faith, fans.

Part Man, Part Machine, All Edge

Street Fighter V: Champion Edition may be well into its twilight age, but Capcom is not quite done r??olling out new skins. The developer has revealed a brand new 'Cyber-Akuma' skin, while also teasing fu??rther skins for future release.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=LI6Jlp9Paio&t=33s

Akuma's new duds kit out the master of Satsui no Hado with a strange mechanical amalgamation, complete with Terminator-style eye-piece and a strangely Mega Man-esque giant arm. Cyber-Akuma also has metallic wings, that protrude from his back during certain maneuvers. This whole look is a throwback to the lore of the original Marvel Super Heroes vs. Capcom, which saw Akuma semi-roboticized by nefarious Marvel villain Apocalypse. Obviously, the Street Fighter V iteration of Cyber-Akuma is cosmetic only, so no Rocket Punch... Don't you have e??nough fucking tools already?

While Cyber-Akuma is quite the impressive contraption, he pales in comparison to Mech Juri, who is Battle Angel Alita to Akuma's Paulie's Robot from Rocky IV. Still, if you fancy rocking Akuma's old robo-ways, then the new skin will be available to purchase in Street Fighter V from September 21 and is included with the Season V pass. Another new skin will be revealed on September 16 during the Street Fighter League Season 3 Finals. I wouldn't be surprised if we also receive new info pertaining to SFV's final DLC character, Luke, at the same event.

Unleash the Beast

The incredible power of Satsui no Hado is about to be let loose within the wild fantasy world of Monster Hunter Rise. Capcom has announced that Akuma, the demonic warrior of the Street Fighter franchise, will be making a guest appearance in the Monster Hunter universe this very weekend, no doubt coming to make MH's behemoths die 1000 deaths.

//youtu.be/KQeYXM2QoYw

As you can see from the new trailer, Akuma will feature in Monster Hunter Rise in Hunter Layer Armor form, which players can earn as a reward for completing an accompanying event quest. The dark master comes rocking his flame-red mane from Street Fighter V and loaded for b??ear with all of his trademark moves such as Gohadoken, Tatsumaki Zankyukaku, and the devastating Sekia Kuretsuha. Wrath of the Raging Demon has to be in the mix somehow.

We also see Akuma using both a bow & arrow and an actual gun, which is just... bizarre, frankly. Personally, I would've loved to see kutesy kunoichi Ibuki in this crossover role she'd fit perfectly within Monster Hunter's rural, tactical attack universe. Still, dem gamerz lo??ve their dark 'n' edg??y boiz, so Akuma it is.

The Monster Hunter Rise x Street Fighter Akuma crossover event kicks off on August 27. Further collaborations are expected throughout the remainder of 2021. Who would you like to see show up in the Monster Hunter universe?

Run it back (to launch year)

Capcom has just released a free update for its flagship fighting title Street Fighter V, adding a brand new Tournament Mode to the list of available multiplayer options. This feature, found in the "CFN?" section, will help hosts and T.O.'s create and manage bracket-based set play for a wide variety of custom online events.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=86p06JgQX3A

Street Fighter V's tournament mode was introduced first way back in early 2020, with a rudimentary beta made available to select players. The new mode allows hosts and tournament organizers to set up brackets for a pool of up to 64 players, complete with fully customized rulesets, character select options, double/single elimination settings, and even the ability to watch previous rou?nd replays while you wait for your next match. Hosts even have the power to ban stages and characters so get fucked Skies of Honor.

Hosts can choose which matches in the bracket they wish to spectate, a crucial option designed to help organizers schedule online streaming priority. Brackets can be locked with passwords to keep out gatecrashers, and even team play is supported. Unfortunately, (because it's never all good news), there is currently no option to ban Wi-Fi players from taking part in the tournament, which?? seems like a huge, NetherRealm-esque oversight.

Overall, it's a very cool and neat addition, but it is pretty frustrating that Capcom has seen fit to launch this tournament update when Street Fighter V is approaching the end of its final season. The game is over five years old now. Hopefully, this technology will be easily transferred to the upcoming Street Fighter VI, and will be available at launch for that debut.

Capcom fighter not down for the count just yet

During this week's EVO festivities, Capcom announced that it was finally ready to unleash two more DLC characters onto its flagship slugger, Street Fighter V. The new update, which is available right now on PlayStation and PC platforms, sees season five additions Akira Kazama and Oro join SFV's now-mammoth roster of bone-breaking supe??rstars.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6QXH-bMWd8

For many players, the most exciting part of today's update is the arrival of badass biker gal Akira Kazama, who steps into the Street Fighter universe having squashed heads in Capcom's great, missing-in-action fight franchise Rival Schools. Bedecked in her intimidating biker garb, Akira will use he??r deliberate and hard-hitting Bajiquan to take on Ryu and chums, felling foes with impactful strikes and well-measured strings. And when things get a little too much to handle, big brother Daigo will be around to lend a helping fist.

Akira Kazama brings with her a new stage, a grimy highway underpass, which is recreated from its appearance in the original Rival Schools. Kaz??ama's fellow team members Eiji Yamada? and Gan Isurugi also cameo as background characters, cheering on their fearless compadre.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGKjCMA8vgc

One of the most unique Street Fighter characters in the series' storied history, Oro is a mysterious hermit who has mastered zen-like tranquility, powerful and manipulative psychic abilities, and, seemingly, the key to immortality. Having debuted in the excellent Street Fighter III, Oro makes his long-awaited return to the ring with? most of his trademark skills in tow.

Oro is a master of juggle combos and possesses amazing air capabilities, baiting out opponents with tricky directional options. Oro's Tengu Stone V-Trigger affords the hermit the opportunity to extend combos with the use of debris gathered from the battlefield - a powerful mechanic that has led many a SF III player to victory. Arguably one of SF's most co??mplex characters, Oro can be satisfying to master and infuriating ??to confront.

Akira Kazama and Oro are the third and fourth characters to arrive in Street Fighter V season five, following Dan and Rose. They will be joined by franchise newcomer Luke later this year, rounding out Street Fighter V's roster. You can check out the full patch notes for the new update right here. Quite frankly, me and Juri are afraid to look.

Plus, Oro and Akira both join the lineup soon

Capcom has confirmed the latest and last character coming to Street Fighter V: Champion Edition. During today's Summer Update 2021, the developer revealed that Luke?, a new character, will be the final addition to the game.

Luke is a brand-new fighter, who enters his trailer by saying that someday, he wants to become a "man like him." Then we get a quick montage of the fighter, decked out in what looks like m??odern MMA gear, fighting Ryu in th??e Capcom Pro Tour ring.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydBVToeAt8w

Luke looks like he delivers some pretty exciting blows,?? at least from the spectator side of things. He's got a bit of showmanship and attitude, and that move near the end where his punches blast across the ring at Ryu is pretty rad.

During the stream, Street Fighter V director Takayuki Nakayama said that Street Fighter V has been developed to pay homage to the past, but "Luke will give us?? a glimpse into the future." What that future is, who can say? But it's neat to get an early look at someone who could play a role in the future of the series.

During today's showcase, we also got extended looks at Oro and Akira, both of whom will be joining the Street Fighter V lineup very soon. Capcom confirmed that both fighters, as well as an Online Tournament system, will be coming to Street Fighter V on Aug. 16, 2021. As much as I love Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, I have to admit that Akira—hailing from Rival Schools—seems more like my kind of character.

Capcom says there will be more to show of Luke in the future, and that the newcomer will be released in Street Fighter V sometime later this November. That will also put a close to this iteration of Street Fighter, as Capcom reiterated today. But maybe it leaves a little optimistic note at the end, knowing there's new things ahead for the long-running fighting game series??.

Capcom has announced that it will be holding a special Street Fighter V: Champion Edition Summer Update live stream next week. The one-hour presentation will look at some of the content headed to Street Fighter V over the remainder of 2021, including new details and gameplay video pertaining to DLC characters Oro and Akira Kazama.

Fans can likely expect full a breakdown of the Rival Schools guest star's moveset, not dissimilar to streams previously held for Dan Hibiki and Rose, both of whom joined the Street Fighter V ro?ster as part of its fifth and final season. I can imagine that we'll also receive release dates for Oro and Akira, hopefully set for sometime in the immediate future. Of course, we still do not know the identity of season v's fifth and final character, so perhaps we'll receive a hint during next week's stream. I hope so, it's getting a little late in the day!

The regional finalists of Evo 2021 Online will get to compete in-person

Evo 2021 won't just be a solely online event after all. The organizers of the fighting game championship series announced today that an Evo 2021 Showcase will be held on Nov. 27 and 28 in Las Vegas, pitting the finalists of each game's regional bouts against each ??other in person.

The Evo 2021 Showcase will bring in top players from each regional tournament, flying them to Las Vegas to compete in the UFC APEX Arena. The five main games will all be present: Guilty Gear Strive, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Tekken 7, and recent addition to the lineup Skullgirls 2nd Encore.

Two champions from each participating Evo region—including North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia—will compete for a prize pool of $125,000, with $25,000 allotted per game. It will all stream on the Evo Twitch channel, and the? tournament has confirmed it will be adhering to COVID safety precautions.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=SljJrY3GczU

Though it isn't quite the massive open bracket that Evo is usually known for, having some sort of championship bracket built up from flying in the finalists of each region should at least be fun to wat??ch. This isn't just a way to have some semblance of in-person fighting game events again, but it's also a pretty major event in terms of promoting the games and their communities. And with several months of prep time between the end of Evo 2021 Online, which runs Aug. 6-8 and 13-15, and the start of the showcase on Nov. 27, there could be some good matches in store.

It'll also be an early benchmark for Guilty Gear Strive, which launched just about a month ago. There have been some online weeklies and tournaments so far, but I'm personally pretty eager to see what everyone brings to Evo. Sign-ups for Evo 2021 Online, by the way, are only open until July 15 at 11:59 p.m. PT, so get on that if you haven't yet. How else will you fi??nd out if your Sol is bad(guy) enough to win a trip to Vegas?

Biker babe getting ready to run you down

Among the final wave of DLC characters headed to Street Fighter V this year is guest star Akira Kazama, who is making the jump from Capcom's M.I.A. fighting series Rival Schools. For those of you who haven't encountered the ass-kicking biker gal, fear not, as Ms. Kazama will be making her presence felt in an official Street Fighter V comic this summer.

Capcom, in association with publisher Udon, will release a special issue of Street Fighter V for this year's annual Free Comic Book Day festivities, which will take place August 14. The "Back to School" special will head, literally, back to school, as Akira shows up to battle other teens such as Sakura, Karin, Makoto, Ibuki, and even Street Fighter III's Elena. It's like when yo??u heard kids from the school across town were coming to the field for a massive scrap (that always ended up not actually happening).

Akira is the fourth of five characters headed to Street Fighter V in its twilight season. Dan Hibiki launched earlier this month, and will be followed by Street Fighter Alpha's Rose, Street Fighter III's Oro, Akira, and a mystery fifth character, still to be revealed. In other recent SFV news, Korean killer Juri Han recently got two new skins, the result of last year's community-led design contest. You can read more about Juri's hi-jinx right here.

Never at a loss for words

The legend has returned. Today sees the coming of the Master of Saikyo-Style, Dan Hibiki, who makes his return to the Street Fighter franchise as the first character of SFV's fifth and final season of content. Capcom has released a launch trailer in order to remind the world, ??as if the world needed a reminder, of Hibiki's incredible martial-arts prowess.

In related news, SFV players who've already had the fortune of getting in the ring with Dan are already finding some interesting secrets. As noted by @discovigilante, it seems that Hibiki-san is bringing his love of taunting back to the ring like never before, and will?? fire off a pose and verbal boast whenever a player repeatedly taps crouch - conveniently the disrespectful "T-Bag" maneu?ver. It looks like, in true Saikyo-style, confident Dan players are unlikely to ever STFU, but honestly, Hibiki-san wouldn't have it any other way.

Alongside the arrival of Dan, Season 5 adds a new balance update, as well as the addition of the all new "V-Shift" mechanic. At the cost of a bar of V-Gauge, fighters will now be able to perform an i??nvincible backdash, handy for relieving block-string pre??ssure or baiting out an opponent's special. This new technique should offer a little more in the way of defensive options, something that has always been lacking in the offense heavy fighter.

Season V will continue throughout 2021, adding DLC characters Rose, Oro, Rival Schools' Akira, and a fifth character whose identity is yet to be revealed. Also joining the roster is the weird, shapeshifting blob known as Eleven, who takes on the looks and moveset of a random SFV character for each round, testing the abilities of any Street Fighter V expert.

Will anything ever top Monster Hunter: World?

After another incredibly successful year, developer/publisher Capcom has released its newly updated "Platinum List", showcasing each and every title that has sold over a million copies in the company's near 40-year history. It will come as no surprise to anybody that, once again, the upper echelon is dominated by two franchises: zombie-smashing horror Resident Evil, and giant-chasing adventure Monster Hunter.

Of the Top 15 titles on this year's list, seven are Monster Hunter entries. 2019's Monster Hunter: World remains Capcom's biggest seller of all time, adding another 400,000 units in the last quarter for an amazing 16.8 million units to date. Its expansion Monster Hunter: Iceborne sits in sixth place with a?n impressive 7.2 million units.

The Top Five is rounded out entirely with Resident Evil entries, including 2017's Resident Evil VII (8.5 million), 2019's Resident Evil 2 remake (7.8 million), 2009's Resident Evil 5 (7.8 million), and 2012's Resident Evil 6 (7.7 million). 2020's offering, a remake of Resident Evil 3, ?failed to make th??e Top Ten, sitting at number 18 with 3.6 million units sold.

In regards to flagship fighting franchise Street Fighter, the humble SNES edition of Street Fighter II retains its Top Ten position, sitting at number six with a staggering 6.3 million units. Not too shabby for a 30-year-old game. Its modern equivalent, Street Fighter V, p?laces just behind at number seven, having shifted 5.2 million? copies since its 2016 release.

Capcom already unveiled some of its plans for 2021, with the coming of Ghosts n' Goblins Resurrection, Capcom Arcade Stadium, Monster Hunter Rise, and, of course, Resident Evil Village?. Will any of these releases find their way into the hallowed halls of the Platinum List? I'll tell y'all next year.

Will be replaced by online competition

The finale of the 2020 Capcom Cup, initially scheduled to take place next month, has been cancelled due to the continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Street Fighter publisher made the announcement yesterday in a s?tatement on Twitter.

Traditionally held at the end of each year to celebrate the finale of the competitive Street Fighter year, the Capcom Cup 2020 was rescheduled to the weekend of February 19, 2021 due to limitations on travel and public gatherings due to COVID-19. Howe?ver, with February fast approac??hing and the pandemic continuing to impact the entire planet, Capcom has taken the decision to cancel the live event.

"While we strongly believe we could have executed a great event with limited risk to players, staff, and crew, we have reevaluated as this situation has evolved and the state of this global pandemic has heightened," said Capcom in its statement. "In its place we? will be producing an online-only Season Final so that we are still able to highlight the best players from this season [...] We'd like to thank the fans, players, and FGC for supporting Capcom Pro Tour through a challenging season."

Akuma Matata

Capcom's Street Fighter V continues to doff its hat to Arika's fist-thrower Fighting EX Layer, with a tribute to the latter's fiery fighter, Garuda, coming for the form??er's raging demon, Aku?ma.

The Garuda skin will be made available to win through SFV's Extra Battle system, which sees players cough up in-game currency for an opportunity to "win" the skin via a tricky fight. It's a legitimately cool skin, "SICK AF?," the kids in the FGC might say. I don't care much for Akuma myself – more specifically I dislike him with every fiber of my being – but I'll admit he looks an unstoppable force in Garuda's gear.

This isn't the first Fighting EX Layer crossover to grace SFV. Last month sure G don the sexy bodysuit of Skullomania, while previous skins have seen Karin transform into Hokuto, Cammy receive a Blair Dame skin, and Ryu don the garb of the vengeful Kairi. It's a shame the licensing for these characters remain murky, but we'll see what Street Fighter VI brings.

A fifth and final season of content for Street Fighter V including DLC characters Dan, Rose, Akira, Oro, and a mystery character will roll out across 2021.

Saikyo-style back in fashion come 2021

Capcom's Shuhei Matsumoto released a state-of-play video message yesterday, in which the Street Fighter V producer announced that DLC character Dan Hibiki will join the SFV roster in February 2021.

The goofy Saikyo-style practitioner is the first of what is expected to be SFV's fifth and final season of content, with Street Fighter veterans Rose and Oro, Rival Schools' Akira, and an as-yet-unrevealed charact??er also joining the fight as 2021 progresses. The timing of Dan's release date reveal coincides with what would have been The Capcom Cup, had this year's Pro-Tour not been canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In the video, Matsumoto - who steps into the role of Street Fighter producer following the departure of Yoshinori Ono - spoke of the difficulties the team has encountered working during the pandemic, but noted that all work on Street Fighter V's twilight year will continue to a high standard b??efitting the brand.

He's got a bone to pick with you

That troublesome but reclusive fighter Skullomania is making his presence felt once again, but unfortunately perhaps not in quite the way fans would have hoped. While it appears that the bodysuited weirdo is finally ready to make his long-awaited return to the Street Fighter franchise, this? comeback is only in the form? of an alternate costume for the equally bizarre fighter, G.

Skullomania, who debuted in 1996 release Street Fighter EX, has fast gone on to become one of the Street Fighter franchise's most legendary figures. Unfortunately, licensing issues have kept the part-time superhero from returning to the roster of Capcom's flagship fighter, much to the chagrin of fans. In recent years, Skullomania made a much-appreciated comeback, featuring in both Arika's Fighting EX Layer and in SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy, albeit in genderbent form.

Street Fighter V players can earn the Skullomania costume in the fighter's current "Extra Battle" mode - which tasks players with completing a series of fights in order to earn the skin. Amusingly, even in the Skullomania guise, G retains his iconic top hat. While this may not be the comeback that Skullomania fans had hoped for, it shows that the license issues are clearing up, and with Street Fighter VI currently in development... fingers crossed?

YA-HOO!

During this weekend's Tokyo Games Show event, Capcom released a teaser trailer for the first season five character headed to Street Fighter V later this year: the incomparable Dan Hibiki.

First appearing in 1995's Street Fighter Alpha, Dan was created as a tongue-in-cheek jab at rival fighting game developer SNK, being a hybrid of Art of Fighting heroes Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia. In Street Fighter lore, Dan is a brash, obnoxious, and painfully over-confident fighter, who has mastered his custom "Saikyo Style" martial arts technique. Despite his overbearing personality, Dan is a good man at heart, dr?iven to see success not only for himself, but? for his protege Sakura Kasogana.

The teaser video gives SFV fans a look at Dan's entire moveset, which sees the return of the Saikyo Style practitioner's trademark moveset. Also showcased are Dan's legendary taunts, often a key element to his winning strategies. While there's no denying that Dan is a comedy character in the Street Fighter universe, I've been aroun?d long enough to see him ??played exceptionally well, often leaving Hibiki-san having the last laugh.

Dan will arrive this winter alongside the launch of SFV's fifth and (supposedly) final season. He will be followed down the line by Rose, Akira, Oro and a yet-t?o-be-revealed fifth cha??racter. Street Fighter V is available now on PS4 and PC.

'Thank you so much for your continued support'

Yoshinori Ono has announced his departure from Capcom after an amazing career with the developer spanning three decades. Ono will resign from his roles as Street Fighter executive producer and? general Capcom brand mana?ger sometime this summer.

Speaking on Twitter, Ono thanked fans and the FGC for supporting him throughout his tenure with Capcom, referencing the "good times, bad times, and non-existent times" he has experienced while producing the Street Fighter franchise. "My heart is filled with appreciation to those players who've?? been giving warm and kind support on the brand," said Ono, endi?ng his statement with his trademark "Shoryuken!" battle cry.

Originally joining Capcom as a sound producer in the early '90s, Ono worked with franchises such as Mega Man, Muscle Bomber, Breath of Fire, and Devil May Cry, before transitioning to more managerial roles on titles Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, Dead Rising, Shadow of Rome, and Capcom Fighting Jam.

Ono is considered the driving force behind Street Fighter's spectacular 2008 comeback. Essentially considered a "dead franchise" by Capcom, Ono lobbied hard for Street Fighter IV and its "back to basics" theoretic, with the sequel launching to incredible success. Ono has since been the spearhead for the flagship fighting franchise, overseeing the production of mainline sequels, spin-offs such as Street Fighter x Tekken, the Street Fighter: Resurrection web series, and the Capcom ??????????????????????????Pro-Tour esports? league.
