Riot Games announced during 2024 Summer Game Fest that its popular free-to-play 5v5 FPS Valorantwill finally be coming to consoles. According to Riot, the console versions of Valorant features c??ustom-bu??ilt gameplay in order to uphold the competitive gameplay it is known for. A beta will be available to global players on both platforms soon, with a more limited beta kicking off for certain regions on June 14, 2024.

World's most popular shooter is about to get bigger

Despite already being the most-played FPS in the world, Valorant is about to get a lot bigger by coming to consoles. Even though the PC player ba??se is massive, there are still a ton of potential players who simply don't like playing with mouse and keyboard or don't have a PC to play on.

Before you worry about console players with aim assist taking over your lobbies—a problem other cross-platform FPS titles usually suffers from—PC and console will not have cross-play available. However, Valorant accounts will share a connected inventory and gameplay progression across all platforms, meaning you can access your cos??metics and other unlockables regardless of the platform you're playing on.

"When exploring whether to bring Valorant to additional platforms, we knew we had to be able to offer the same uncompromising, competitive experience that we’ve provided to PC players for years: a precise, team-based, tactical shooter. We were adamant that Valorant's core, competitive gameplay must feel natural on a controller; and - if we couldn’t deliver on that gameplay promise - we had to be prepared to walk away from it. The console versions of Valorant won't be lagging behind, either. According to Riot, both PC and console?? versions of the games will receive simultaneous releases including live patch balances, new agents, maps, premium content, an??d more.

Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest is upon us, taking its rightful plac??e as the de f??acto summer video game experience after the shuttering of E3 last year.

As is also tradition, Keighley has released his annual "Geoff's Trailer," a hype real spliced together of the biggest and best announcements that fans can expect at Summer Game Fest.

There's not necessarily any surprises in the trailer, but it does do a good job of setting the tone fans can expect from the show. There is, of course, a lot of Shadow of the Erdtree in here, which makes sense. The DLC is imminent, and Elden Ring's premiere was at Keighley's Game Awards broadcas?t, so it should have a big showing he?re.

There are other, similarily big games featured, too, hinting we may see more over the next week. The trailer features glimpses of the upcoming Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero and what looks to be the next Batman game, the Meta-exclusive Batman: Arkham Shadow.

Summer Game Fest will air live on various platforms, in??cluding YouTube and Twitch, on Friday, June 7, at 5 PM ET/2 PM PT. The show will be a live production with trailers, reveals, and news of ??the biggest games from a plethora of devs.

In addition to the main SGF show, there are a number of highly anticipated ancillary programs over the surrounding days, including Devolver Direct and the much-hyped Xbox Games Showcase + Call of Duty Direct.

There will also be some kind of Nintendo Direct soon, though details remain scarce. Though Nintendo is unaffiliated with Summer Game Fest, they do tend to schedule their presentation?s around the same weekend, so it may be soo?ner rather than later.

Summer Game Fest tickets will be available for purchase starting from Tuesday, May 7 on Ticketmaster, so if you can make it, be sure to try and get a ticket early bef?ore they sell out.

What to expect at Summer Game Fest 2024

At the time of writing, there's not many developers and publishers who are confirmed to be participating in Summer Game Fest 2024, so there's no telling what sort of games you can expect to see announced during the show. So far, the only title guaranteed to make an appearance is Batman: Arkham Shadow, a new?? VR game in development for the Meta Quest 3.

With? the warmer months looming ahead [cries in UK], there's gonna be a number of video game expos and conference to look forward to. Although E3 is no longer with us �for good or ill �it's at least being replaced by Summer Game Fest. Recently, the date for the event was confirmed.

As for what's being showcased, we don't ??know that just yet. You can ??expect there to be a decent amount of buzz surrounding the event as we get closer to June, though. For those who want to attend, public tickets will be going on sale from May 7.

When and where to watch Summer Game Fest 2024

As mentioned in a recent post from Geoff Keighley, SGF 2024 will be streaming live on Friday, June 7. Keighley describes it as a "cross-platform LIVE showcase of what's next for video games." A post on Twitter/X from the official Summer Game Fest account says it will ??be a two-hour event.

Last year's Fest was a pretty big hit, especially after the cancellation of E3 following a few years of uncertainty about the event. Summer Games 2023 saw showcases from the likes of Capcom, Xbox (Starfield in particular - remember how hyped we were about that?), and Final Fantasy XVI.

Before the summer period hits though, there are some other events and conferences, such as PAX East (March 21), the London Games Festival (April 9), and more. We've also got Day of the Devs coming up this Sunday.

Keighley began Summer Game Fest in 2020 in the wake of COVID-19. The pandemic led to much of the world having to remain isolated, which resulted in in-person shows being canc?elled.

One of the surprise success stories of 2022, Tango Gameworks' Hi-Fi Rush, is getting to set to unleash a fresh wave of day-glo color and block-rockin' beats, with the arrival of the Arcade Challenge updat??e �Available to downl?oad next month, free of charge, on PC and Xbox platforms.

As revealed during yesterday's Xbox Games Showcase extension, the new update will bring two exciting new modes to the highly dynamic hack 'n' slasher. BPM Rush will task players with battling wave after wave of increasingly tough opponents, with bonus points awards for synching the battle to the beat. Stay on your toes, however, as the BPM will incre?ase with each and every wave, and only the most rhythmic melee warriors will be able to keep the pace in this unique-loo?king endurance test.

The second mode Power Up! Tower Up! is a variant of Hi-Fi Rush's Rhythm Tower mode, and adds a slew of power-ups and bugs to the battl??e. Chai will be able to select from a variety of buffs and nerfs between rounds at the cost (or increase of) their score multipliers and other bonuses. Essentially, it is up to the player to increase their powers in exchange for a higher score, or to conversely reduce their own abilities for the big, big numbers.

In addition to the two modes, new challenges arrive that will reward players with clothing for Chai and Korsica, new poses and filters for Photo Mode, and all-new special attacks that see an assist from robo-friendos CNMN and Smidge. Only a whole year to wait

Summer Game Fest 2023 is about ready to wrap up, but Geoff Keighley is already preparing people for next year's event. If you managed to check out, and enjoy, the showcases that have been broadcasting recently, you may well be excited for SGF's return in 2024. Actually, the event is even technically over yet, as Annapurna's showcase is still to come.

Not only is Keighley eager to announce that Summer Game Fest will be back in June of next year, he goes on to say that this year's event was "record-setting." Not quite certain what that means, but it likely refers to the amount of people who attended the event, both in person and online?. Given the dry spell from gaming conventions over the past two or three years, it wouldn't be surprising to see the likes of SGF see an uptick in attendees.

Currently, th?ere are no details about the 2024 showcases, other than it will obviously be hosted by Keighley himself. There will also be the return of Play Days from studio iam8bit, but a??gain, details won't be announced until further down the line.

Summer Game Fest 2023 saw a lot of content from a variety of studios, publishers, and industry experts. Trailers from the likes of Alan Wake 2, Mortal Kombat 1, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and lots more were on display. There was also the Day of the Dev event, hosted by ia?m8bit and Double Fine, which gave indie studios the opportunity to showcase what they've been working o??n.

Who Goes There?

During yesterday's Xbox Games Showcase, publisher Secret Mode released a creepy teaser trailer for a new horror title, Still Wakes the Deep, whi??ch is currently in development for PC an??d Gen9 consoles.

Developed by The Chinese Room in Unreal 5, Still Wakes the Deep sees an offshore oil rig in the North Sea under siege by a mysterious and terrifying entity. It's 1975, a storm is raging, and something has come aboard the Beira D rig. With lines of communication severed and ??escape seemingly impossible, there may be no other option than to face terror itself if you are to survive this horrific incident.

The teaser trailer offers little in the way of gameplay and concept, but we do get to see some very impressive visuals, as well as catch a glimpse of the foreboding, isolating atmosphere of the title. It all feels very The Thing, which is obviously a more than suitable comparison for '70s isolation horror. The Chinese Room is no stranger to horror, having developed titles such as Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, and Dear Esther, and with the power of Unreal 5 in its hands, Still Wakes th?e Deep could eventually prove to be the studio's magnum opus.

Something very wicked this way comes, as publisher Team17 and developer The Game Kitchen have announced a release date for their unholy sequel Blasphemous II. The second scripture in this particularly sinfu?l franchise will launch on PC, Switch, and Gen9 platforms on August 24.

Continuing on from the Wounds of Eventide DLC, Blasphemous II follows the continuing adventures of The Penitent One, torn from the grave and thrown back into a terrible cycle of death and return, confronting sinners and ensuring redemption is paid for their actions �usually at the end of a particularly pointy stick. The sequel offers up a vast and entirely new labyrinth, ready and waiting for our protagonist and their array of hideous new weaponry. Of course, a gallery of hellish new enemies awaits, including Blasphemous' memorable and utterly horrible boss battles.

Take a walk on the wild side

Annapurna Interactive, the indie publisher renowned for its strange, unusual, and aesthetically pleasing properties, has announced that it will be throwing its own hat into the summer gaming stream ring. The studio will host its own special showcase pre??sentation on Thursday, Jun?e 29.

While no titles have been specifically announced for the stream, Annapurna Interactive promises reveals and updates alongside one of its "biggest announcements yet". A short teaser trailer accompanying the showcase reveal features some of the studio's recent hits, including the dystopian kitty adventure Stray, the gorgeous sci-fi platformer Solar Ash, and the critically acclaimed smash hit Neon White. We do know that Silent Hill: Townfall will be in attendance during the presentation.

Whatever i?t has up its sleeve?, we can be sure of a flurry of color and style, as some of the most creative indie studios in gaming today show off the titles that they hope you will be playing over the course of the coming years. Get to The Root of the problem

Eager Remnant fans finally had their prayers answered during yesterday's Summer Game Fest presentation, as publisher Gearbox took to the airwaves to announce a release date for the multiplayer shooter �Remnant II w?ill launch July 25 on ?PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X.

Alongside the new release date, developer Gunfire Games prepared a new trailer, showing off the sequel's new co-op campaign. Up to three players will be able to take up arms against the godly entities that threaten to bring about an end to humanity itself. Much like its predecessor, Remnant II will feature explosive ranged and melee combat, adaptive and home-crafted weaponry, and a huge, procedurally ge?nerated world packed out with hordes of strange creatures and domineering boss characters.

And for those fans who wish to take their hype to a whole new level, Gearbox Publishing has opened pre-orders on three editions of the incoming sequel. Alongside a standard digital edition ($49.99), a Deluxe Edition includes additional content in the form of three classic Remnant: From the Ashes armor sets. Finally, an Ultimate Edition ($69.99) also adds a Survival Pack of in-game boosts, the pre-purchase of three upcoming D?LC packs, and Early Access to the title, allowing gameplay from June 21. I was barely curious, but now I'm wishlisting it

There was a lot to check out from yesterday's Summer Game Fest, and there's still a lot more to come. We'll be bringing details about what else has been showcased at this year's Geoff Keighley event, but there was definitely one thing of note for horror fans, and those who have been waiting for Alan Wake 2 will pr??obably have alr??eady checked out the new gameplay trailer.

If you haven't, the new footage follows protagonist Saga Anderson, an FBI agent sent to investigate a series of murders in Bright Falls. The sequel takes place some 13 years after 2010's Alan Wake, and th??e recent trailer shown at SGF gives a brief taste of what's to come. With a much creepier vibe than its predecessor, it's one that fans will probably be keeping an eye on. I now count myself among those people.

The much darker atmosphere that it's got going for it immediately turned my head. I'll be honest with you. I was not a massive fan of Alan Wake. It was fine, but it just didn't pull me in the way it did with many other horror fans. Admittedly, it's been years since I played it, so maybe my memory of it is a bit hazy. I just remember it not leaving as big an impact on me as I'd hoped. ?The fact is, I wasn't paying too much attention to the sequel until this gameplay footage emerged.

Perhaps it's obvious to say, but Alan Wake 2 looks like it's got a Resident Evil remake thing going for it. As a fan of this rejuvenation of Capcom's iconic series, AW2 defi?nitely has a lot of appeal, even from this relatively short clip. It's too early to say, but I'm hoping the new installment will be somewhat broodier and atmospheric. It certainly looks a lot better, but that's to be expected given the years that have elapsed since the first game. Where the OG release didn't really scare me, I'm h??oping this follow-up will offer up much more of a "brown pants" scenario.

In short, I had little interest in AW2 before. Then I saw the Summer Game Fest trailer. Now I think it could be one of this year's most exciting survival ?horror games.

'Speaking of Final Fantasy...'

The "Summer of Gaming," aka "not-E3" kicked off at 3PM ET on J?une 8, 2023, and our old pal Geoff Keighley was available for more hard-hitting gam??e trailer reveals and lighthearted DoorDash ad reads. Seriously, good recovery on that one!

So what did we get this year? A decent chunk of AAA and indie reveals across a large spectrum of genres, and a big Final Fantasy finish. Naturally, as it is prone to do, Final Fantasy (or more specifically, Final Fantasy 7) stole the show with a "one more thing" and gave us a smoldering Sephiroth shot, as well as confirmation that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is out in 2024 on two discs. I can't wait to see the final installation size.

Lies of P continues to look mysteriously enticing, there were a few crossover/cameo reveals (including a segment where Nic Cage said he wanted to "fuse" with the player live on stage), and we got some brief info on Spider-Man 2, as well as an October 20 release date. To E3 or not to E3?

I've said it before, but I miss the old E3 format quite a bit. The ESA had lots of room for improvement (and in many cases, failed to adapt even with bright signposts at every turn), but proper E3 events just felt bigger. That downward spiral was inevitable given the moder??n focus of individually curated bite??-sized streams, but it was accelerated by the effective demise of the ESA's greater influence on the industry.

Still, we got a few cool reveals and more Final Fantasy 7 at The Game Awards this year. It's enough.

Fourth Age spelunking

Last year we got word that The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria was in the works, and will deal with events taking place in the Fourth Age of the Lord of the Rings timeline (beyond the events of the ?core books). That's a pretty big deal, as that era of the franchise is rarely touched upon, even by Tolkien himself.

Well, we got another look at it today thanks to Summer Game Fest 2023, where it got a quick trailer segment. Even after that bit of footage, I still don't really have any idea of whether or not this will be good. Hey, even if it's not up to snuff, it'll be really hard to top Gollum was the "worst Lord of the Rings game" this year.? Th??at's something to look forward to!

Yep, it still looks great

Live at Summer Game Fest 2023, Remedy Entertainment game director Sam Lake took the stage to give us the elevator pitch for Alan Wake 2: one of the least necessary pitches of the modern gaming landscape. Alan Wake 2 looks fantastic so far, but at the very least, we got an actual look at gameplay today. On stage, Keighty reminds Lake that ??the game was teased at The Game Awards in 2021 for a "2023" release. Well, it's 2023, and it already has a date: now w??e know what it actually looks like.

This is "early on" in the game, Lake confirms (in case you were worried about? spoilers!), and Keighley calls it "raw unedited" footage. Saga (who has a pistol with a capacity of 12 rounds in the trailer sequence) is the core focus, as they walk up and enter an extremely creepy house, fighting off enemies in the process. There will be a "50/50 split" between the two main characters (Alan Wake and Saga Anderson??), Lake says, and you can swap between them at "given points" in the story.

I ain't fibbing

As part of this afternoon's Summer Game Fest event, publisher Neowiz Games launched a surprise demo for its upcoming Gothic fairy tale, Lies of P �The grim-looking soulslike �an adaptation of the Pinocchio fable �can be checked out right now on PC, ??PS5, and Xbox Series X.

Lies of P will put players in the mechanical mantle of android boy Pinocchio, who must battle his way through the Bell??e Epoque city of Krat in order to reach his creator Geppetto, who has gone missing amid the darkness that is enveloping the town. Equipped with all manner of weaponry and a penchant for bending the truth, Pinocchio will face an army of nightmarish contraptions on his odyssey to find his "father" and ga??in true humanity.

The new demo, ??which is available to download right now will give interested players a chance to check out the first two chapters of the game. This will include introductions to several main characters, a feel for the general gameplay and intense combat, and a face-to-face with a few challenging bosses.

Body and Soul... and bits

During Summer Game Fest, NetherRealm Studios released the first gameplay footage for its upcoming fighter Mortal Kombat 1. The sequel is coming to PlayStation, PC, and Xbo?x platforms this September.

The trailer gave us our first look at both the chaotic one-on-one action, as well as an all-new chapter in the long-running MK lore, (which, this time around, is another hit on the good ol' reset button). Additionally, we got konfirmation that the "Kameo Fighters," previous?ly referenced on the official website, is, as expected, an assist system. This will allow players to mix up their roster by calling in playable and NPC kombatants from past ??and present.

In the trailer, we se veterans such as Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Johnny Cage, Liu Kang, Mileena, Raiden, and Kitana with assists supplied by Kameo fighters Sonya, Kano, Kenshi, and Jax, among others. Of course, we also saw some miserably gory, body-severing fatalities, along with what seems to be a return of the Mortal Kombat (2011) X-Ray mechanic,?? or at least some form of hard-hitting revenge system. While the game really isn't looking a whole lot different from its predecessor, this was a positive appearance.

"A modern take on the legendary franchise"

Today at the Summer Game Fest kickoff, Geoff Keighley and company revealed Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, a new platformer with a 2d-sidescrolling vibe. It's due out on January 18, 2024, and the listed platforms include Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and Amazon Luna.

Based on the footage, locomotion is an important part of the game's flow, with airdashing in clear focus. Combos are also seemingly possible, as the nimble hero Sargon is able to juggle and grappling hook enemies in, "get over here" style. Ubisoft Forward will have more info on this new entry in the Prince of Persia franchise.

What time do you need to tune in?

In just a matter of hours, Summer Games Fest 2023 will be kicking off. Hosted by Geoff Ke??ighley, the event will span a number of days, giving you the chance to check out what some big names in the world of gam??ing have in store. But what specifically is happening today?

If you are interested in checking out the ope??ning moments of this year's SGF, the show kickstarts today - June 8 - at the following times: 12:00 PT / 15:00 ET / 20:00 BST / 21:00 CEST. Obviously, depending on where you live in the world, you'll need to keep an eye on which time is relevant to you. If you're not in any of these time zones, you can do a quick search to convert to your own.

But what's to be expected from today's event? Well, Keighely will officially introduce Summer Game Fest 2023, likely giving a brief overview of what to expect. That will commence at noon PT and will probably go on for a couple of hours. Immediately following this - at 15:00 PT - will be the Day of Devs event, a show by Double Fine, of Psychonauts and Psychonauts 2 fame??, and iam8bit. The purpose of Day of? the Dev is to give the spotlight to indie games and studios, showcasing their insights and upcoming titles.

Then at 18:00, you can check out The Return of the Volvy, an "annual gaming extravaganza" for developers starring the titular mascot from Devolver Digital. Volvy has been the star of a number of games in the past, including Hotline Miami and Cult of the Lamb.

They're finally showing off Dead Phoenix, right?

Summer Game Fest has come a long way since it usurped the gaming expo throne from E3 at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. What started as a slow trickle of game reveals across haphazardly scheduled presentations has tightened up into a week of widely anticipated showcases as well as the ?PC Gaming Show. The shindig kicks off on June 8 with a live show at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood and continues for the next few days with streams from Devolver Digital, Ubisoft, Xbox, and now Capcom.

The publisher revealed today it will b??e putting on a showcase during this year’s SGF. Airing June 12 at 6:00 pm ET/3:00 pm PT, the presentation is billed as presenting what’s next for Capcom. It will feature 36 minutes of news and updates on the publisher’s?? upcoming games and future titles.

While we don’t know precisely which games will be there, we can make some safe guesses. Street Fighter 6, which just had a very successful launch, will likely be a part of the show. Exoprimal launches next month and will probably get a few minutes in the stream. The port of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is also set to drop in a few weeks, so it might show up too. We also shouldn’t forget about Monster Hunter Now, the Niantic mob??ile game that’s set t?o launch this fall.

Beyond those games, the only other known titles I can think of are Pragmata and Dragon’s Dogma II. The former is allegedly still set to launch for PC and current-gen consoles in 2023, while the latter is without a release window. Outside of that, anything could be announced. Capcom is on a roll right now and it feels like the publisher can do no wrong. There could be another strong compilation of classic games in the works for all we know. With the final update to Monster Hunter Rise around the corner, is it too early to s?peculate about the possibility of a new game in that series getting announced?

This Sunday, June 11, will see Microsoft take to the airwaves for its Xbox Games Showcase presentation, essentially its big summer stream that one would expect as part of the E3 festivities. And the black-and-green brand is promising to show off a whole host ??of titles, most of which will be sporting "in-engine" footage.

"None of our first-party games in the show are full CG trailers," said Xbox VP of Gaming Aaron Greenberg on Twitter. "Everything is either in-game footage, in-engine foota?ge, or in-game footage with so??me cinematics. Each of our trailers will be labeled so it is hopefully clear for our fans."

While Greenberg was simply replying to a fan's query, it should be noted that the comments are, ironically, a stark contrast to PlayStation's State of Play presentation from May, which featured over an hour ?of wall-to-wall trailers and reveals, but leaned heavily on cinematic sequences, showing little actual gameplay for a lot of its most-exciting titles.

More directly, however, Greenberg says that the Xbox Games Showcase will feature "no movie trailers", which is a clear tongue-in-cheek reference to Sony spotlighting the upcoming Gran Turismo film during its stream. A funny ??gag for sure, but to be fair if I was Sony putting together a summer showc??ase, why wouldnt't you promote the film based on one of your biggest and most lucrative brands?

Anywhoo, the Xbox G??ames Showcase takes place June 11 at 10:00 PT / 13:00 ET / 18:00 BST. We will, of course,? be on hand to bring you all of the biggest and brightest news from the event. It's a Sunday evening for me, so you better show up and make the breaking of my weekend worth it, capiche?

No More Secrets

Grasshopper Manufacture, the studio founded?? by esoteric game designer Suda51, is teasing some sort of announcement for June 15, which is the date that its online countdown clock hits Terminus.

While the clock was first started back in March (on the anniversary of No More Heroes, no less), fan @Knoebelbroet spotted that it had recently been updated with a new design, as well as offering a new and definitive date for the mysterious reveal. The timing would suggest that the reveal was initially set to take pl??ace during thi??s week's Summer Game Fest event, but has now been delayed to the following week.

So, what is it? Well, the fact that the clock launched on No More Heroes' anniversary could suggest a new entry in Suda51's lurid action-adventure series. That said, there have been whispers that the studio has been working on a new title for some years now �A video shot at the studio itself last year showed an artist working on a grotesque boss character, leading some to believe a new Shadows of the Damned might be in the works. Although it's been a while since we heard anything of the Lollipop Chainsaw remak?e, Suda51 and his current staff are not involved wi??th that project, so it is unlikely to pertain to that game.

Whatever the ultimate reveal turns out to be, all of the prospects?? are pretty exciting. And, thankfully, we won't have to wait too much longer to find out the truth. We will, of course, bring you all of the details from the June 15 Grasshopper Manufacture reveal right here on Destructoid.

The PC show will go on, even if E3 won't

The summer of gaming showcases is starting to take shape, and that means another stream has locked?? in its air date. The 2023 version of the PC Gaming Show, hosted by PC Gamer, will air on June 11.

No exact time has been locked in just yet, though PC Gamer confirms the broadcast will follow the Xbox double-header that's also planned for June 11. Host Sean "Day[9]" Plott will return to head up t??he showcase. More details about?? what's set for the actual broadcast, including games that will be featured, will arrive in the coming months.

"When we launched the PC Gaming Show way back in 2015, it was a response to how?? underrepresented the platform was at E3," writes PC Gamer's global EIC Evan L??ahti. "Our noble hobby was in the midst of a golden age, but it didn't have a seat at gaming's biggest table. Now that E3 has gone off to live in that big, never-ending gaming convention in the sky, we're carrying on under the wider umbrella of mid-year showcase events, along with our sister show, GamesRadar's Future Games Show."

Yes, by the way, the Future Games Show is also planned to happen sometime in June. Details are TBD right now, but GamesRadar and Future have confirmed that the show is "unaffected" by the recent cancellation of E3.

The summer stops for no one

It looks like, despite the big to-do being done, there will still be some events and news to share in June. These events join the aforementioned Xbox showcase, set to discuss more about Microsoft and specifically Starfield too. Ubisoft is also hosting its own Forward event in June.

Summer Game Fest is locki?ng in its 2023 plans, and they involve a live studio audience. The kickoff of Summer Game Fest 2023 will take place on June 8, 2023.

The show will air on live streaming platforms like YouTube and Twitch. And this time around, it'll have an audie??n?ce in attendance. The Summer Game Fest kickoff show will have a live audience, a first for the SGF. It'll take place at the YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California.

The full lineup for the Summer Game Fest, including more participants and activities, will be ?announced sometime in the future. ??Show host and organizer Geoff Keighley said in a press release that SGF will also highlight other publisher digital events, as well as demos and "more surprises" to be announced.

The summer looms in the distance

We're still working our way towards the end of 2022, but this summer is shaping up to be an interesting one for gaming news. The pandemic put a hold on a lot of the usual events, including the arguably largest show ?in E3.

But E3 is returning in 2023 with help ?from PAX organizer ReedPop, with plans to host industry and consumer day??s. The E3 2023 action will run from June 13 through 16, with digital showcases starting on June 11.

Summer Game Fest was originally conceived as an answer to the pandemic shutdowns and lockdowns. The digital-only festival has become ?a recurring staple of summers since, and has also blanketed the summer's usual bout of gaming news and announcements.

With a live audience now in tow, it looks like this year will see shows trying to return?? to the way things were. I'm a bit curious to see how it all?? shakes out now, after years of digitally focused events.

There are still world premieres in our near future though, as The Game Awards 2022 kicks off a week from today.

New record for The Geoff & Company Power Hour

Because time no longer exists, it has already be?en a whole fortnight since we all sat down to watch Geoff Keighley and an array of publishers and developers showcase their wares during the Summer Game Fest live stream �and it appears that the show has been a tremendous success, breaki?ng its own viewership records for the third year running.

According to a tweet posted by host and organizer Keighley, Summer Game Fest 2022 �which broadcast on the afternoon of June 9 �hit a peak concurrent 3.5 million viewers during the course of its 90-minute runtime. Over 6,000 account??s co-streamed the broadcast, while "Twitter Conversation" was up 100% on last year's stream, with the usage of "#thegameawards" hashtag up by 69%. Nice.

Over the course of the Summer Game Fest stream, viewers were able to check out new trailers, news, re?veals, and updates on a wide variety of titles currently in development for PC and consoles.

Among the many games featured we saw a trailer for Guile in Street Fighter 6, footage of space horror The Callisto Project, a cinematic for Marvel's Midnight Suns, a release date for TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, campaign footage from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, footage of Nightwing kicking ass in Gotham Knights, and the long-awaited reveal of Naughty Dog remake The Last of Us Part I, which had, unfortunately, been leaked mere minutes before the show began.

Summer Game Fest will return in June of 2023. Before then, we can expect to see Keighley do his stage show thang thing at Gamescom's Opening Night Live stream on August 24,? ?and, of course, at The Game Awards 2023, which is scheduled to take place this winter.

The indie gaming side of Xbox is hosting another demo event this year, the ID@Xbox Summer Game Fest Demo event. Start??ing June 21, the ID@Xbox team says it will have over ??30 demos of upcoming games playable on Xbox.

These demos will be up from June 21 through the 27th, so be sure to check them out while the window's open. And ID@Xbox notes that these demos are not the average demos you'd usually see on stores. While those usually come from fairly completed games, the ones in ID@Xbox are more akin to "show floor demos" you migh??t catch at PAX or something. Basically,?? these are early-stage projects, so be constructive if things seem a little rough.

Xbox has highl??ighted some of the games arriving in this demo event, including:

• Batora: Lost Haven: An isometric action game where you journey through colorful planets and fight to save Earth using your physical and mental superpowers.
• Broken Pieces: A time-based thriller that seems ideal for Control fans, where you have to solve the mystery of this bizarre French village.
• Severed Steel: One for the blood-pumping FPS fans, it's got bullet-time and destructible environments.
• Tinykin: A Pikmin-style game that we've had our eye on for a while, with an incredible look and tons of little helpers.

Dozens of demos galore

It's already been a pretty good summer for demos. The Steam Next Fest is on right now, and there are a ton of upcoming projects to discover and add to your wishlist there.

Last year's ID@Xbox demo event had some pretty great hands-on previews in the lineup too. Games like Tunic, Lake, Sable, and more were all part of the 2021 demo fest. These are wor??th giving a shot, especially if you're looking for that next big indie to watch.

Keep the showcase train rolling

Xbox is hosting not one, but two showcases over the next wee?k or so. While the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase airs on June 12, an Xbox Games Showcase Extended will air on June 14.

This bonus showcase will feature some new trailers and deeper looks at the news from the preceding Games Showcase. Developers and game creators will appear on the stream too. It'll last about 90 minutes, airing at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET on Twitch, YouTube, and other major streaming platforms.

The Xbox Games Showcase Extended will air in English, Lat?in America Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, German, and French. Audio Descriptions and American Sign Language will also be available live.

The show goes on

This extension now brings the end of the summer showcase streaming out from Sunday and into Tuesday. That said, fo??r Xb??ox fans, it's a good sign they'll be seeing some more of the games talked about at the Xbox and Bethesda presser.

With both Starfield and Redfall slipping out to 2023, it'll be interesting to see what ends up populating the showcase Microsoft over these two days. Even if the ?games?? have moved forward, I'm hopeful there will be some news to share either way.

There are also some big titles we haven't heard from in a while, like the upcoming Fable and Senua's Saga: Hellblade II. And other studios at Microsoft have been quiet for a little while now too. Maybe we even hear some more about that Indiana Jones project?

We'll see what Xbox, Bethesda, and the many Xbox stu?dios have in the works on both June 12 and June ?14.

Resident Evil has one of the most loyal fanbases out there, and those who love the series have been looking forward to playing their favorite games of the series on next-gen consoles. Earlier this year, Capcom announced that they'd be able to do just that, because they had free updates for Resident Evil 2, 3, and 7 in the works for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

During today's Capcom Showcase as part of the summer news blitz, they let us know that actually, these updated versions are available instantly. That was a nice surprise! The Xbox update will even be available with Xbox Smart Delivery, making it even easier for players to ??update to the best version for their console.

As reported a few months ago, the updated versions mostly just give us nicer graphics for each of the titles. It's nice that a company would go out of their way to make sure their games look amazing, free of charg??e. Now go and download your free update!

Hot scoops rolling out of Los Angeles

Since the official gameplay reveal of Capcom's Street Fighter 6 at last week's Sony State of Play presentation, there has been an almost tidal wave of news, updates, and tidbits, (both officially and very unofficially), regarding this latest bout of World Warriorism. This weekend, lucky folks over at the Summer Game Fest Play Days event in ?L.A. are getting some time with an early build of the new sequel, coming away with positive opinions and a fistful of interesting and intriguing han??ds-on updates.

Street Fighter 6 is a long way from launch, and as such all of the following info is both based on limited hearsay and is subject to change between now and release day.

Perhaps first and foremost, notable FGC content creator Maximillian Dood came right out of the gates with the biggest news of the day, stating that Street Fighter 6 will support crossplay. This info was repor?tedly obtained by Maximillian direct from the developer's mouth, and is easily one of the most important and most requested pieces of info regarding the new title. Crossplay, naturally, opens up the player pool, and is essential for any modern fighter willing to build a large and long-term community.

He also confirmed, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, that Ryu is, indeed, a shoto character.

Be Quiet and Drive

In regards to gameplay, all who have had the fortune to check out Street Fighter 6 have come away with the same two core thoughts. The first thought of note is that SF 6 is placing an emphasis on individual player styles, hoping push away from SF V's frustrating "All top "X" characters play the exact same way". Developers have told players that personality is a key element of SF6, from?? the personality of its characters, stages, and audio/visual style, to the personality of every person who sits at a fightstick or picks up a co?ntroller...

...or a Hitbox. If that's how you choose to live your li??fe.

The second component �key to Capcom's "individual playstyle" theme �is Street Fighter 6's all-new meter-management system, known as "Drive". This system forms the backbone of the second-to-second gameplay. Every player begins a match with a six-bar, fully stocked Drive Meter. T?his meter can then be utilized for EX moves, or a variety of defensive and offensive skills, such as parries and reversals (see below). Blocking an opponent's attacks drains Drive while attacking a blocking opponent will increase it. Landing punishes and reversals also boos?t the Drive gauge.

Almost all forms of attack and defense, counter and reversal, will have some form of effect on a player's Drive gauge, either limiting their ability to perform parries, EX specials and other Drive maneuvers, or providing them the resources to let loose with a flurry of offense. But here is the key... If you are completely drained of Drive, then your character ente?rs a sort of "burnout" state, which decreases their damage and speed �as well as limiting both their offensive and defensive opti?ons �until the meter is naturally replenished.

As such, Drive may prove to be the most "core" Street Fighter system ever, as it places incredible importance and priority on every single element of a player's aggressive and defensive tactics, while also offering legitimate in-game limitations to those who waste it, or fail to strike an economic balance between gaining and losing meter. It's a fascinating form of meter management, and the way Drive is implemented in so many exchanges will form the outline of each player's personal fighti?ng style.

The universal Parry mechanic returns from Street Fighter III to make a (double) impact in SF 6. It seems that parrying comes in two forms: Drive Parry and Perfect Parry. Drive Parry (Hold MP + MK) is similar to Flawless Defense from Guilty Gear Strive, and allows a player to absorb all hits without chip damage, as long as they hold down MP + MK. However, this method of defense severely drains valuable Drive, paying for its "all-in-one block" reward with expensive resources. From the Drive Parry stance, a player can double-tap forward to dash out (Drive Rush), or smack forward and HP + HK to deliver a space-creating reversal, (Drive Reversal). Think SF V's V-Reversal for comparison.

Perfect Parry (Tap MP + MK) is more like the classic SF III parry system, and will see a player land the parry with frame-perfect accuracy, rewarding said risk with a huge opening for a strike or Super. Much like SF III, we can expect the Perfect Parry to be a key component of high-level play, providing incredible opportunities for a comeback even when all is lost. It should also be noted that parrying does have recovery?? frames so, if baited out, will leave the pity parry party open for a good smacking.

Another defensive option is Drive Impact (HP + HK), a very cinematic strike that is reminiscent of a fully-charged Focus Attack from Street Fighter IV. The Drive Impact spends Drive to first absorb a blow and then deliver a hard-hitting response. Of course, Drive Impact can absorb Drive Impact, so if you read your opponent, you could turn their DI back against them in a w?ild flash of paint and posturing.

Super Duper

Finally, the obligatory Super meter returns. The SF 6 edition features three stages, with each pertaining to a different super move. Stages one and two vary from character to character and will include supercharged strikes, grabs, and projectiles �as well as buff states. Stage three is a classic, cinematic Super/Crit?ical Art, ala Guile's step-up somersault kick, as featured in his recent trailer. Spend your super meter early to drop in some major combo enders, or hold the line for a flashy, stage three big finish.

Phew... That's a helluva lot to take in, all derived from people spending just an hour or so with the new game. As the year progresses, we'll be sure to hear much more official confirmation and demonstration of gameplay, meter mechanics, and individual character tech powering Street Fighter 6. Until then, all of this info gives us mor??e than enough to chew on. It seems very likely Capcom will eventually release this same demo as a beta at some point in the future, so hopefully, we will? all be getting back on the streets sooner rather than later.

The demo contains four characters, (Ryu, Chun-Li, Luke, a?nd Jamie), and two stages, (Genbu Temple and Metro Ci??ty Downtown).

Using Simple Inputs and Au?to Combos puts an addit?ional drain on a player's Drive meter.

Standard chip K.O.'s?? are back, but they are conditional ?to Drive burnout state.
