So, you were lucky enough to bag yourself a shiny new Switch Online N64 controller, and want to know what to do with it. Well, you can use it for the library of Switch Online N64 titles, obviously, but as of today, you can also use the N64 controller to control your favorite plumber pal in Super Mario 64, as featured in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars compendium.

A new update, Version 1.1.1 is available for the retro compilation right now, and allows for the use of the Switch Online N64 Controller on the very game it was designed for �thus frustrating third-party Nintendo game developers for an entire generation. All you need do is download the update, ensure that your controller is paired with the console, and you're good to go. The patch notes seem to suggest that Super Mario 64's on-screen prompts will not match up with those of the controller itself �so time to unlock t?hat muscle memory. You'll get it. It's simple enough.

Released in September of 2020, Super Mario 3D All-Stars brings together three classic titles from Mario's earlier jaunts into a polygonal 3D world. Featuring 1996 N64 launch title Super Mario 64, 2002 GameCube entry Super Mario Sunshine, and 2007 Wii release Super Mario Galaxy, no-one would deny the supreme playability of these three classic adventures. Despite this, the release was roundly criticized by both critics and fans for its slapdash, low-effort presentation, as well as Nintendo's needlessly cynical decision to release the title in a limited time window.

It's a good day to be a bad dude, as Zagreus, Theseus, Nyx, Dusa, and the rest of the Underworld's denizens have come strutting into the UK Chart scene. Last week saw Supergiant Games' Hades finally hit the Top 20 at number seven, thanks to the sex??y-as-all-fuck roguelike getting a physical release on Nintendo Switch.

Hades joins a parade of Switch titles currently jamming up the Top 10. Both Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe retain their respective number two and number four positions from last week, while social sim Animal Crossing: New Horizons is once again back on top in the number one spot, no doubt brought about thanks to the title's anniversary celebrations and impending spring events. Super Mario 3D All-Stars is bringing up the rear at number nine.

Global phenomenon Minecraft is pulling double-duty this week, with its original world-building title at number eight and its subterranean spin-off, Minecraft Dungeons, sitting at number 10. PlayStation and Xbox platforms are represented by Sony's Spider-Man: Miles Morales at number three, Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto V at number five, and Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War - still shifting copies and sitting comfo??rtably at number six??.

Anybody call for a web-slinger?

In an interesting turn of events, Insomniac Games' pseudo-sequel Spider-Man: Miles Morales has clambered ?to the top of the UK Charts, just over four months after its initial November 2020 release.

Miles Morales' belated arrival at the No.1 position comes after the UK received a major restock of PS5 releases, with the next-gen version of the open-world adventure accounting for 90% of all Spider-Man sales over the past week. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, even if you discounted PS4 sales, our boy Morales would still have found himself in the top spot, usurping Nintendo's Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury after one full month in the premier position.

The PS5 restock also saw a sales boost for other older releases, with the PS5 edition of Warner Bros. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate returning to the Top 40 at number 18, and Ubisoft's Immortals: Fenyx Rising returning at number 14. It's still very much a Nintendo-led Top Ten, however, with over 50% of the division taken up by Switch releases including Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Ring Fit Adventure, Minecraft, and Super Mario 3D All-Stars - all of which will no doubt be joined by Capcom's incoming Monster Hunter Rise in just a matter of weeks.

Bowser's Fury celebrates one full month in the premier position

Nintendo Switch titles remain the most popular physical purchases in the UK's gaming market, a trend that has seen the Japanese industry giant dominate the UK Charts for the first quarter of 2021. Leading the charge is the indelible Super Mario Bros. series, whic??h has seen s?teady and persistent sales across its range of re-released Switch titles.

This past week saw Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury retain the number one spot for a fourth week running, making it a month on top for the Wii-U remaster. Social sim Animal Crossing: New Horizons sits at number three, having held a Top Ten position for almost an entire year. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario 3D All-Stars sit at number four and six respectively, while the Switch edition of Minecraft and exercise 'em up Ring Fit Adventure fill out the back end of the Top Ten.

Elsewhere in the Top Ten, Square Enix' RPG Bravely Default II plummeted from number 11 to number 33, which is de rigueur for most non-Final Fantasy JRPGs, at least in regards to the UK's physical sales. Sega's Yakuza: Like a Dragon poked its head back into the chart scene at number 35, thanks to the release of the new PS5 port, while Atlus' Persona 5 Strikers has already left the Top 40 entirely.

It's another Nintendo-friendly week in the UK Charts this week, as social adventure Animal Crossing: New Horizons retains the number one spot for a third week running, leading a slew of sales on a wide range of Nintendo Swi??tch releases.

The adventures of Tom, Nook, Isabelle, and all the critters of Nook Island sit proudly in the number one spot, followed up by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, still shifting physical copies some four years after release. Lounge workout Ring Fit Adventure moves up to number four, while the Switch edition of Minecraft is nestled in at number five. Just Dance 2021 moves up one place to number seven, while retro compendium Super Mario 3D All-Stars retains its seat at number ??nine. A very good start to the year for the House of Mario.

Elsewhere in the charts, steady sales continue on AAA mainstays such as Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War at number three, Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto V at number six, and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which returns to the premier league at number 10. The only new physical release this week was nocturnal gnasher Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Earthblood, which unfortunately failed to make an i??mpact at number 36.

Nintendo's totes-adorbs lifestyle sim Animal Crossing: New Horizons h?as returned to the top of the UK Charts, beginning 2021 as the biggest selling physical title for t??he year's opening week. No doubt a result of a new army of post-holiday Nintendo Switch owners.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the UK's second highest-selling physical release of 2020, just behind Electronic Arts' football simulator FIFA 21, which is renowned for its persistent staying power as far as British retail is concerned. The remainder of the Top Ten is rounded out with steady sales from Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and further Nintendo releases including Minecraft, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

2021 is set to be a tough year for the UK chart scene. Not only does each pr?ogressive year result in a further shift from physical to digital sales, but the incoming confusion and fragility of Brexit are likely to play havoc with trade routes, currency values, and the status of the UK high street. And this is all without even making mention of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It is set to be an awkward and difficult time for British retail going forward.

Night City Higher

Night City's fascinating and dangerous world - inhabited by a cast of intriguing and amoral characters - has been providing an exciting experience for many Cyberpunk 2077 players. However, the slew of undeniable controversies surround CDPR's development process and the title's eventual launch - from technical, critical, employee and consumer standpoints - has gone some way to damping the fire for what was one of gaming's most-hyped releases ever.

Of no surprise, Cyberpunk 2077 debuted in the No.1 spot of this week's UK Charts, becoming the second biggest UK retail release of 2020 - beaten out only by Electronic Arts' soccer sim FIFA 21. While this is an achievement, these numbers generally reflect the sales of the PS4 and Xbox One editions of Cyberpunk 2077, the very same editions that CDPR is currently offering refunds for, due to their shaky technical performance.

Elsewhere in the charts, other blockbuster titles such as Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Sony's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Valhalla continue to jockey for both position and those all-important Holiday sales. Over in Nintendoland, sales continue for Switch releases Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and perennial Xmas seller Just Dance 5.

FIFA 21 remains the title to beat

While we have already passed the typically lucrative Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend, the UK Chart remains relatively stagnant this week. The same ten titles occupy almost the exact same ten spots that they did last week, with Electronic Arts' FIFA 21 retaining the coveted numb?er one position for a third week r?unning.

The Top Ten is rounded out with some of 2020's most recent releases, including Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and Sony's pseudo-sequel Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Nintendo regulars Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Super Mario 3D All-Stars are present and correct, maintaining the steady sales that each Switch titl??e has seen since launch.

There's a new gun in town however, and this week's launch of the long-in-development and highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 is guarantee?d to cause a stir when it launches December 10. Wit??h the UK high street temporarily out of lockdown, and Holiday shopping in full effect, it is very likely that next week is CD Projekt RED's for the taking.

Version 1.1.0 is here

Praise the sun...shine!

Nintendo said that it was working on an update that would add extra control options into Super Mario 3D All-Stars on Switch, and they made good on it with a new patch (1.1.0) this week. If you boot up your copy, you should see an update waiting for you, and it's a doozy if you have certain ?hardware available.

That hardware is none other than the GameCube controller, which now works with Mario Sunshine just like it did back in 2002. There's a caveat of course: you do need the GameCube controller adapter hardware, as well as a GameCube controller.

The latter shouldn't be too hard to scrounge up though, as there are plenty of used remotes out in the wild (Wavebirds too!), and Nintendo even re-released a ton for the recent string of Smash Bros. games. The adapter has also been knocked off several times over, and generally goes for $15 for third-pa?rty hardware.

Even if you don't have a GameCube remote and the adapter (Reggie voice: "what's wron??g with you!"), camera inversion has been added to the options menu for everyone. All three games now supported inverted controls. Beyond that, "other general fixes" have smoothed over the trio of titles.

All good news! Now we just need Nintendo to announce that the "limited ?run" was a sham.

In the first major shakeup in months, the UK Charts welcomed a fistful of brand new releases into its ranks, all vying for the coveted number one spot. When the dust had settled, in what could be seen as something of an upset, Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Valhalla beat out Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War to become the best-sel??ling physical launch of the week.

Ubisoft's head-cleaving open-world adventure debuted at number one, with the rockin '80s Cold War settling for number two. In third place was Sony's pseudo-sequel Spider-Man: Miles Morales. PS5 releases Demon's Souls, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Godfall also debuted at numbers six, 13, and 16 respectively. Quite a feat considering the new hardware hasn't even launched on these sh?ores yet!

Once we are?? past the typically lucrative holiday period, things may start to get a little tougher for the physical sales charts. With a year-on-year shift toward online sales; cheaper, disc-less hardware, and the ongoing string of high-street lockdowns, 2021 and the ninth console ??generation are set to very much be the era of the digital download.

With just a few months left until Nintendo rips it away from store shelves and the eShop

While there are still many questions as to why Nintendo would limit the availability of Super Mario 3D All-Stars to just six months, there's no denying it's been an effective sales tactic. After seeing big preorders and demand for the gam??e back in September, we finally got a look at just how successful its launch was. Today, Nintendo revealed the game has? sold 5.21 million copies worldwide since its release.

Its success is just one of the highlights from Nintendo's most recent quarterly statement. Paper Mario: The Origami King also proved to be a hit, moving 2.82 million copies since launching in July. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is also still showing its legs, selling nearly four million ?units in just the last quarter. According to Nintendo, 20 differen??t games have sold more than a million copies on Switch in just this fiscal year.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars arrived back in September and it's kind of been sitting quietly ever ??since.

I mean, it is a "limited-time release" after all: patching it or adding new features is kind of a weird area if it's just going to be gone in a couple of months. Alas, Nintendo has listened to the countless cries for inverted controls and wi?ll acquiesce: soon.

According to a new tweet from the Mario 35th anniversary account, version 1.1.0 of 3D All-Stars is coming around the pike. It'll launch on November 17, at?? which point "you'll be able to change the camera operation [to inverted] for all three titles."

Hey, I didn't know Mario was a flight sim?! Wakka wakka.

For all of your inverted fiends out there, this should be pretty exciting news, especially if you put it down and have been holding out for a patch. It should impact Mario Sunshine more proportionally, if you were?? having trouble aiming the FLUDD.

Another very quiet release week has seen Electronic Arts' football simulator FIFA 21 retain?? the top spot of the UK Charts, despite a huge week-on-week drop ?in physical sales of around 50%.

A lack of major launches - along with the continued slump in physical sales across the board - results in a stagnant chart listing, which sees Square Enix's Marvel's Avengers, Take 2's Grand Theft Auto V, and Activision's Crash Bandicoot 4 jostle for position against a string of Nintendo Switch mainstays, including Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Ring Fit Adventure, and Super Mario 3D All-Stars.

Next month will most definitely switch things up, as the gaming industry launches an entirely new generation of hardware. Accompanying that will also be a run of major releases, including Ubisoft's Watch Dogs: Legion, Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and Nintendo's Pikmin 3 Switch por??t, among others. With the holiday season approaching, the stage is set for a major chart shakeup.

Nintendo calls this a "limited-time offer," which is lik?ely a true statement, as My Nintendo products have the propensity to sell out in under 24 hours.

Like many other old? school collectors, I frequently lament the lack of full-color, detailed manuals in the current climate. The rush of cracking open a new game and reading the entire manu?al first is something a lot of people will likely never experience in their lifetime.

That said, naturally, there's a lot of waste involved with manuals. A lot of folks aren't quite as giddy ?about a piece of paper slipped into their game case; and not having to print or design them saves game ?studios some cash. It's very easy to see why they were phased out, but that doesn't mean they still can't be a niche product.

In addition to all of the collector's editions and companies like Limited Run that keep print media alive, artist Rowan Fox-Noble crafted their own "Super Mario 3D All-Stars Manual." What does it entail? Well, it's a lot like the manuals of old. It's 44-ages, with sections for the main game, Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy. It also provides a soundtrack list, as well as controls for each indivi?dual ga??me and what each power-up does.

Most importantly, it provides star checklists! This thing is incredible. You can find the listing over on Etsy, where Fox-Noble is offering a week-one discount. For reference, they create several other "companion booklets" for other Switch games.

Death, Taxes, and Crash Bandicoot being a smash success in the UK. Yes, of no surprise to anybody, Activision's Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time has debuted in the top spot of the UK Charts, dethroning Nintendo's retro compendium Super Mario 3D All-Stars.

The mad marsupial just pipped Electronic Arts' Star Wars: Squadrons to the number one slot, with only around 1,000 physical copies between the two new releases. Never bet against Crash, as many of you will remember when Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy ruled the roost - for what seemed like forever - back in 2017.

Elsewhere in the charts, 2K Games double-whack of Mafia: Definitive Edition and Mafia Trilogy still hold Top Ten places at numbers nine and ten respectively, while Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons have captured numbers eight and seven. Nintendo's social sim Animal Crossing: New Horizons sits comfor?tably at number four, having retained its Top Ten standing since its? initial launch back in March.

Nintendo's retro compilation Super Mario 3D All-Stars is celebrating a second week in the top spot of the UK Charts, having fended off not one, but two of 2K Games' Mafia re-releases.

Both Mafia: Definitive Edition and Mafia Trilogy debuted in the top ten at numbers three and six respectively. Recent releases such as Square Enix's Marvel's Avengers and Activision's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 & 2 have continued to hold onto steadfast positions in the premier league. The rest of the top ten is rounded out by chart veterans such as Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto V, and regular Switch sellers Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Minecraft.

As we head into October, the heavy-hitters will start arriving on store shelves, vying for holiday cash. This week sees the launch of Activision's Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, and?? given the UK's incessant love affair with the mad marsupial, it seems almost a given that the sequel will be rocketing straight into the number one spot

Nintendo's retro-compendium Super Mario 3D All-Stars has predictably debuted at number one in the UK Charts, dethroning Square Enix's comic-book adventure Marvel's Avengers after the latter spent? two weeks in the premier position.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars, which launched for Nintendo Switch on September 18, features upscaled remasters of classic adventures Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. The trilogy has ??received praise from critics and fans for its timeless gameplay, but was chastised for its bare-bones contents and time-limited release window.

Elsewhere in the charts, 2K Games' mediocre brawler WWE 2K Battlegrounds debuted at number six. Tellingly, it appears that media outlets were not given review codes for the microtransaction-heavy wrestlefest. Also debuting in the Top Ten this week is Konami soccer title eFootball PES 2021, just squeezing into the premier league? at number nine.

I've seen all sorts of "I'm coming around on Sunshine" testimonials (along with plenty of "I still hate Sunshine" takes), as well as the same polarized reception around Mario 64. Yes, I vividly remember some people not liking Super Mario 64 at launch: wild, right?

Lets-a-go back in time

We all have our favorite Mario game.

Maybe it's a classic entry you played during your childhood. Maybe it's a newer one that blew you away. Me? It's kind of a mix of both, as Super Mario World still rules the 2D roost as far as I'm concerned, but Mario Galaxy 2 and 3D World definitely fit into that latter category.

I'm sure everyone is going to have opinions on which Mario is "best" to include in a Super Mario 3D All-Stars c??ompilation, but the ones Nintendo actually gave us are a decent selection.

Super Mario 64

Raise your hand if you've finished Mario 64 more times than you can count: I thought so.

Say what you will about it "looking and playing like an outdated relic," but Mario 64 still holds up for me. The incredibly enticing hub castle is still a masterpiece in design, as is the open-ended nature of the game and the devilish machinations of hidden stars. The presentation of Mario 64 in this package is so?mewhat disappointin?g, but the game isn't.

Mario 64's sandbox puz??zle approach is brilliant. If you hate a mission parameter or even a full level, you can just leave. As a kid, there were entire portions of the castle that I didn't explore fully until I made the push to acquire all 120 stars. The fact that the hub is actually a level (and isn't so labyrinthine that it? starts to become a chore to navigate) still blows my mind.

The controls translate well to the Switch (as they did on the DS), and naturally, the camera can take some getting used to if you didn't grow up with the original. It's very fun to play in handheld mode, but as a note, this is "Super Mario 64," not the DS version with extra content. There isn't a whole lot more to say about this one. It's a classic, but the 3D All-Stars version isn't going to wholly convert anyone.

Super Mario Sunshine

Look, I've played Sunshine more than enough to make a judgment call on it (I even had a Sunshine speedrunning competition with a friend of mine with side-by-side TVs!), and I know I'm wading into dangerous territory here, b?ut it's still incredibly polarizing.

Foundationally, Sunshine is a 3D mascot platformer with a water jetpack strapped to Mario.  I'm just going to get into it: the problem lies with the FLUDD system. Depending on who you talk to, having to micromanage the FLUDD is either s?trategically engaging or tedious. I’m somewhere in the middle. Aiming it can be a chore and the gimmick c??an feel very tired halfway in as the game tries to come up with more tricks to constantly refill your water meter without trivializing many of its puzzles or battles. Although there are lots of clever ways the game eases you into these situations, for me, the best levels are FLUDD-less, full stop.

There are some really interesting and abstract designs in these side levels, years before Mario Galaxy was a twinkle in someone's eye. The FLUDD isn't a constant problem either; it just crops up every now and then and becomes a thorn in your side. The tropical setting of Isle Delfino is also starkly unique, a few levels are legitimately taxing, and the stakes feel a little higher overall. As far as the All-Stars version goes, Sunshine's resolution is better than Mario 64 ??while docked, and GameCube-era vis?uals still look great to me, minus some washed-out colors every now and then.

I revisit Sunshine around once a generation and appreciate it slightly more each time �/span> even if it is still near the bottom of my 3D Mario power rankings. Hey, guess what you all? I did it! I made a definitive ruling on Mario Sunshine. I'm sure this won't be debated for another 18 years?.

Super Mario Galaxy

Mario Galaxy on the other hand...one of the most disparaging things people say about it is "sure, but it's no Mario Galaxy 2." And hey, not many games could measure up to that masterpiece of a sequel! But Galaxy 1 still stands on i?ts own, especially now that more control options are available.

Most notably, you can play the entire thing in handheld mode, as Nintendo opted to sub in touch screen functionality for the Wii's IR pointer. If you're playing docked or in tabletop mode, Nintendo requires motion controls �/span> but the Pro Controller's Y button can double as waggling for Mario's spinning mechanic (you'll also need an extra Joy-Con for the passive co-op mode??). Speaking of the Pro Controller, the game is fully playable with it. Menu selection and star bit shooting are done through motion-control aiming. Easy enough.

As far as the bones go, this is the game in the trio I’ve played the least, but I really enjoyed discovering it all over again. The level design is a bit uneven in that some feel appropriately epic on a galactic scale, and a few have a copy-and-pasted feel to them like you're going through the motions until you're wowed again �a pacing problem the sequel addressed. But Galaxy can suck you in if you let it, especially if you're isolated from the ability to play Galaxy 2, this collection's big omission.

Mario Galaxy also has a fair bit of worldbuilding (including a brutal intro where Bowser's forces completely wreck the Mushroom Kingdom), but it's a lot more digestible and adorable, as the galactic motif is extremely zen-like. The introduction of Rosalina also assists in helping Galaxy craft its own world, without the reliance on nostalgia. It plays very smoothly and still looks great to this day (shots fired: the two Galaxy games l?ook better than so??me current-gen games). It deserves to be in this collection.

Wrap up

As far as 3D All-Stars' extras go, you're basically getting a music player for all three games (that can be used while the Switch is in portable mode like a little iPod) and that's about it. The menus are eloquently?? framed like a museum of sorts, but once you read the flavor text and flip through the available music tracks, you're done. The games are the core of this release.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars, as barebones as it might be as a compilation, is a great way to experience (or re-experience) these games all over again. It was a joy running through all three of them even if they weren't strictly upgraded. That goes double for Mario Galaxy, as this is ?going to be my preferred way to play it from now on.

All the small things

In this era of day one patches, one would expect some bigger Nintendo games to get huge, multi-GB updates to basically patch in the entire game twice over: but that's thankfully not the case for Super Mario 3D All-Stars, or a lot ?of first-party Nintendo games, for that matter.

Today version 1.0.1 was released, which only adjusts a few minor things. As usual the wording is very vague (thanks Nintendo!), but several UI issues were altered for Super Mario Galaxy's co-star ?(co-op) mode, as well as "some issues...to let you play the game more ??comfortably."

D?uring my t?ime with all three games I didn't notice any major issues, so if there are edge cases that folks might have stumbled upon, this patch should hopefully shore those up. Ideally, a compilation like this shouldn't need massive fixes.

Let's spin bad boy Bowser all over again

This week sees the sudden launch of Super Mario 3D All-Stars for Nintendo Switch, compiling th?ree of the iconic gaming hero's g?randest adventures for fans everywhere.

Nintendo has released a near three-minute "Overview" trailer, spotlighting each of the titles featured in the upcoming triple-pack. From iconic N64 release Super Mario 64, to the GameCube's Super Mario Sunshine, and finally Wii hit Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario 3D All-Stars promises to retain all of the fun and adventure of these classic games, while adding HD resolution vi??suals and Joy-Con optimised control schemes. Also spied in the trailer is a "Music Player" mode, which will allow players to enjoy each t?itle's soundtrack at their leisure.

Despite the gaming community's hype for the title, Super Mario 3D All-Stars has courted some controversy due to Nintendo's decision to make the compendium a "limited time" release. Essentially, the publisher is stating that the triple pack will only be available to purchase - both physically and digitally - until March 31. This announcement had led to a rush of online orders and ensuing stock frustrations for some retailers.

Base.com disappointed with stock numbers

UK retailer Base.com has been forced to cancel all of its customer pre-orders for the upcoming Super Mario 3D All-Stars after? receiving what it referred to as a "woefully short" stock allocation for the highly anticipated release.

"We have just been notified of our allocation of Super Mario 3D All-stars (Nintendo Switch) and it is woefully short," reads a Base.com customer email, posted to Reddit by user Greebos. "This is very disappointing and it is with great regret that we have to inform you that we will be unable to fulfil?? you [sic] order on the day of release... Further, as Nintendo and their UK distributers [sic] are unable to give us any reassurance that more stock will become available after release, we have taken the regrettable decisi??on to cancel all orders".

While many Nintendo fans were understandably excited for the announcement of the Nintendo Switch title - which compiles classic releases Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy - some have been left frustrated by its "limited time" release, which implies that the triple-pack will only be available for purchase, both physically and digitally, between September 18 and March 31.

The ?news has, inevitably, led to a mild form of "panic-buying" as fans, (and no doubt scalpers), rush to pre-order the title for release day. Rushes such as these are likely part of the problem faced by Base.com and other retailers when hoping to receive adequate stock. In fact, this is nothing new, as in my own experience of retail work, the allocation of Nintendo products was often a dice roll, particularly when it came to holiday releases. Add to this the distribution issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and you have a particularly sticky situation.

It's important to note that, as of this writing, Base.com is the only UK retailer that has chosen to cancel its confirmed Super Mario 3D All-Stars pre-orders.

Some swift Japanese ads provide more context

So we got a fair bit of Super Mario 3D All-Stars gameplay out of that initial salvo of announcements, but thanks to some more advert?ising ma??terials, you can piece together a bit more.

It's hard to believe that 3D All-Stars is nearly here, and that it's set to go away early next year. But alas, that marketing strategy seems locked in at the moment, and it's paying off for Nintendo: as 3D All-Stars is currently (at the time of publication) the number one best-seller on Amazon'??s gaming list.

By comparison, this Japanese ad is?? a lot less insightful, only providing a few m?oments here and there.

This Super Mario 64 All-Stars ad also focuses on snippe??ts of a few of the more iconic moments, then gives us glimpses of ense??mble gameplay.

Finally, this Galaxy ad showcases the game's two-player?? functionality via two Joy-Con.

Super Mario Galaxy supports touch controls in Handheld Mode

Nintendo has clarified how the controls will work in Super Mario 3D All-Stars on Nintendo Switch, and while we don't have the full picture for every possible setup, it's nice to know that Pro Controllers are supported. After all, some of us were burned before by Pokémon: Let's Go and Super Mario Party.

Folks have also wondered how the original Wii pointer controls in Super Mario Galaxy are being adapted for Switch. In a statement to Polygon, Nintendo said the planet-hopping game is "supported in TV, Tabletop, and Handheld Modes. In TV and Tabletop modes, motion controls are required for pointer functionality. In Handheld Mode, pointer functionality? has been adapted to use Touch Screen."

Snatching Star Bits with touch controls sounds fiddly, to say the least. As noted on the store listing for 3D All-Stars, Switch Lite players can g??et a co-op assist from a friend if they have detached Joy-Con.

The master detail-gleaners over at GameXplain have also pointed out that the GameCube controller isn't fully supported in Super Mario 3D All-Stars, so Sunshine die-hards will have to keep that in mind.

This compilation isn't everything I hoped for given its less-than-ideal remastering and unfortunate Super Mario Galaxy 2 omission, but I couldn't resist ordering the physical edition as soon as I saw it pop up on Amazon?. The bizarre March 2021 deadline itself didn't push me to action – I'm too much of a fan.

In lighter news, I'm having a hell of a time revisiting Super Mario All-Stars in Nintendo Switch Online's Super Nintendo library. I almost blew through Super Mario Bros. 2 in one night. Two worlds left to go!

Wow, what a morning

Well, we all knew this day was coming, but Nintendo blew us out of ?the water this m?orning.

On the 35th anniversary of Mario, Nintendo just announced three new big titles: Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Mario 64, Sunshine, Mario Galaxy), Super Mario Bros. 35 (a 35-person battle royale game) and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is coming to Switch via one SKU, with "higher resolution versions and optimized, smoother gameplay experiences" on September 18. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury is out on February 12, 2021 and will feature online co-op and local multiplayer with "more details coming later." Super Mario Bros. 35 is in the same vein as the classic "versus" Mario game, and will la??unch on October 1 as a "digital-only game exclusive" for Switch Online members: weirdly, it will be "playable until March 31, 2021."

Oh, and Super Mario All-Stars is out on Switch "later today," there's an AR/real-life toy version of Mario Kart coming, various events and merchandise are running through March 2021, plus a new collectible Game & Watch device is coming on November 13 for $49.99.
