After it was revealed that one of the final Super Mario Maker levels on 3DS and Wii U that had never bee?n beaten was cheated, Team 0% went ahead and beat it anyway.

Nintendo announced last year that it would shut down all 3DS and Wii U online servers on April 8, 2024. Since then, Team 0% has been working tirelessly to complete every Super Mario Maker level before t??hose servers go down and the game is unplayable. A month or so ago, they were left with one level to go, Trimming the Herbs, but it was then revealed ?that the level was cheated and illegitimate. But that didn't stop the group from completing it.

Trimming the Herbs has been completed without the use of cheats in Super Mario Maker

A couple of weeks ago, Team 0% reached the point where there was just one Super Mario Maker left for it to complete: Trimming the Herbs. The group has been tracking this with a website anyone can check. After Trimming the Herbs gained traction on social media, the original creator, Ahoyoo, published a series of posts explaining how they'd used speedrunning tech to help them compl?ete it and get ??it uploaded.

For those who don't know, Super Mario Maker levels can't be uploaded unless the creator can complete them to avoid any impossible levels hitting the servers. Ahoyoo claims they made this level for competition and intentionally used speedrunning technology, informing the judges of the competition ??ahead of time, but it was uploaded regardless.

With this win, Team 0% has completed its goal: successfully finishing every user-generated Super Mario Maker level. Whether in some fit of madness or stubbornness, user sanyx91smm2 took it upon themselves to keep trying and finally completed Trimming the Herbs two days before the server shutdown. Their video reaction is priceless and exactly how I'd sound i??n this situation.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7yvVJbji0U

As a result, Team 0%'s website now has a 101% completion rate because, against all odds, it has also added a cheated level to those it completed. This is a true world first because not even this level's creator could finish it, and I can't think of a more fitting end to this ques??t.

Furthermore, if the bounties on this level, which grew greatly before it was revealed to be cheated, are upheld, sanyx91smm2 stands to be paid $2,500 in ca??sh and $1,100 in gift cards alongside a selection of other promised rewards for a human complet?ion of Trimming the Herbs. After months of pushing to finish every Super Mario Maker 1 level before 3DS and Wii U servers close for??ever, the final one has been cleared, though it's on a t??echnicality instead of skill.

Team 0%, a group of Super Mario Maker 1 and 2 players dedicated to clearing every level in both games, has been working for weeks to complete the final few levels from the first game before servers make it impossible to play. Nintendo announced last year that it would shut down all 3DS and Wii U servers in early A??pri??l 2024. This spurred Team 0% on to complete every level sooner, but ??its final win has come more as a wet fart than a bang.??

Super Mario Maker 1's Trimming the Herbs level was cheated

For the last week or so, the only level Team ?0% hadn't managed to complete was Trimming the Herbs. This level is incredibly challenging, and as of yesterday, it was revealed that it was actually somehow cheated. For context, you have to complete any level you make in Super Mario Maker before it can be uploaded because the servers would be flooded with impossib??le levels and ruin the fun otherwi?se.

//twitter.com/Ahoyoo_Twitch/status/1771286931994780106

The level's creator, Ahoyo, owned up to the fact that Trimming the Herbs is an illegitimate level and was still uploaded to the Super Mario Maker 1 servers. There's a lot of lingo in the thread they've used to explain what happened that makes the situation seem more c??onfusing than it is, so I'll simplify it for you.

Trimming the Herbs was created and uploaded in 2017. Ahoyo planned to raise awareness of it as a super difficult level and then reveal that TAS (tool-assisted speedruns) existed for Super Mario Maker 1. However, not all went as planned, ??and Trimming the Herbs fl??ew under the radar until this year, when Team 0% popularized it in its effort to complete it before early April.

So why didn't ??this cause a huge amount of backlash for Ahoyo? Well, over the past week. It seems to have done just that. I'm not e??xactly sure why the level wasn't flagged sooner. Allegedly, it was shown during the competition it was made for, and the TAS exploit was revealed to the judges ahead of their viewing, so it should have been caught then.

Ahoyo has apologized for causing havoc but I don't think the blame lies entirely with them. Other illegitimate levels have been uploaded to Super Mario Maker and disqualified by Team 0% in its efforts before, so this is nothing new. What it means is that Team 0% completed its mammot??h task with its clearance of The Last Dance, and that should be recognized as a huge achiev??ement.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=siz4oB4CGKo&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fjbsgame.com%2F&source_ve_path=MjM4NTE&feature=emb_title

Fans aren't actually that angry about Trimming the Herbs using tools. The fact that it was uploaded at all is impressive and shows that Nintendo's system for the game is flawed. I think the best way to look at this is as a complete record of Super Mario Maker 1. A group of players took it upon themselves to explore every legitimate level before the game was lost forever due ?to its server dependence, and that's amazing.

Trimming the Herbs is a fun footnote in the archive of levels Team 0% has put together. It's a positive outcome that goes even further than what this community was aiming to do because it's uncovered a drama, heist, or mystery that no one actually knew existed. While many of us would obviously rather Nintendo didn't shut down servers and kill games in this way, that act has brought people toge?ther and created a fantastic story intrinsically linked to those servers. In one way, they'll never truly die because this story can live on forever.

When Super Mario Maker was initially released for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U in 2015, it's hard to say if Nintendo knew exactly what it was setting itself up for. Opening up the opportunity for fans to create their own Mario levels and upload them for the community to play is a fu??n concept, and everyone was able to find something they loved about it.

However, as we draw closer to Nintendo's server shutdown, players are racing to complete as many levels as possible before they're taken away. In fact, one group is taking this so far that they're just one level away from having completed every level in Super Mario Maker. This level, "Trimming the Herbs," may just be the toughest in the g?ame's histo?ry.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=siz4oB4CGKo

Why do players want to complete every Super Mario Maker level?

There are a ridiculous number of levels in Super Mario Maker, made by both die-hard players and professional game devs alike. While the sequel may have drawn most players away, there's been a dedicated? group continuing to make and play levels in the original release.

Late last year, Nintendo announced it would be ending server support for the 3DS and Wii U on April 9, 2024, at 9 AM JST. This means that all games with online elements will become unplayable, including Super Mario Maker. With just under a month to go, a small community is working together to complete every level. You can actually check out the progress th??ey've made on their official website.

At the time of writing, 99.99% of all levels have been completed. The only one that remains is called "Trimming the Herbs," and it's an absolute nightmare.

I was never good at Mario platformers, but even I can understand that this level is pretty much impossible. In order to upload a level for others to play in Super Mario Maker, you had to complete it yourself. That's what makes this so infuriating for those trying to get through ??it. The level is clearly possible, but it requires such frame-perfect play that you almost need the blueprint of where to go and when to ge?t through it.

There's some discussion out there about the level having clears registered on it. However, those have been detected as cheats because there's something in the results that gives them away. Those r??esults show that a user simply changed the code to tell the game the player has compl?eted them.

That being said, the community seems confident "Trimming the Herbs" will be com?pleted before Nintendo shuts down the 3DS and Wii U servers forever. It feels like this group is one discovery away from making a major breakthrough, and it really is, depending on how you look at it. Humans have always had an intrinsic need to explore, uncover mysteries, and map out their surroundings. That's exactly what's happening here, just with the user-created levels of an incredibly popular Mario title.

Please?

Nintendo snuck out a brief Direct the other day and among the announcements, we saw a few more Wii U titles making their way to the Switch. Both Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Hyrule Warriors will? soon be playable on the Switch with some additions.

As Nintendo makes every effort to leave the Wii U in its rear-view mirror, it seems to be slowly porting over every big release from the forgotten son of its library. It's great news for Switch owners, but as a Wii U owner, I feel like the console's greatest gem is getting shafted. Can I just get a Mario Maker port, please?

I know everyone is worried about Smash making its way to the current gen, but I'd gladly thro??w it aside if I could make my own custom Mario stages on my Switch.

I know it wouldn't be an easy fix. After all the Wii U's dual-screen functionality is what made Mario Maker work. That's why it comfortably found a home the 3DS, but that version is a shell of the game's former glory. With a few changes to functionality, Mario Maker could find a home on Nintendo's latest console.

For starters, level editing would more than likely be limited to handheld mode. It?? wouldn't be impossible but using a controller to navigate the level editor sounds like a nightmare. On top of that getting a capacitive? stylus for the Switch would probably make level editing a hell of a lot more enjoyable.

Before the Switch caught fire with games like Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild, Mario Maker was the proof that Nintendo still had amazing ideas up its sleeves. Now it just needs to get it on a platform people actually own. For all I know they're hard at work on a brand new Mario Maker for Switch, but until any sort of announcement happens all I can do is shou??t my desire into the void. So thanks for ??humoring me, I guess?

This is an interesting one

Super Mario Maker was a fantastic game at launch on Wii U, but it just needed some extra love and care to ??really be the best it could be. Nintendo sort of kind of obliged with a few content updates and some officially sanctioned levels, but after that string of light support -- poof, they were gone.

For some time now other than the release of a crippled 3DS port the publisher has been silent regarding Mario Maker, which encouraged people like Psycrow to step in and inject some life into the scene. Psycrow figured out all sorts of interesting ways to break the game, which garnered a renewed interest in level creation, but Nintendo decided to ??ban him.

Here's the worst part -- rather than fix these glitches over time, Nintendo merely continues to ban Psycrow for creating them with the tools he's given in-game. While I fully support bans being handed out in a competitive game like a shooter or MOBA title, given that most of Super Mario Maker's draw is? based around creating levels it seems less impera?tive to ban folks.

So how does he keep coming back? Well, it's a hilariously Nintendo worthy workaround, as he uses two Wii U consoles to system transfer over and over, a process that lifts the ban temporarily?. After calling Nintendo's hotline initially to request a l??ift they didn't relent, so he figured out how to get around "an infinite number of bans."

He is still uploading levels to the game, which are being played to this day?? by many and include bouts of raising money for charity. If it wasn't for him there would be far less eyes on this project, and unlike many other publishers that embrace and reward their community, Nintendo is turning a blind eye to it.

Size matters, even if the motions are similar

Way back in the day, console ports of arcade games were expected to typically pale in comparison to their quarter-sucking counterparts, and we were okay with that. Flash ?forward twenty or so years and parity is essentially expected between ho??me console versions and handheld ports.

Something as simple as a Super Mario Bros. game woul??d sur?ely make an easy transition from the Wii U to the 3DS, right?

Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (3DS)
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Released: December 2, 2016
MSRP: $39.99

Thing is, the Nintendo 3DS is over five years old and can't even run this game full screen at the mind-bogglingly small 240p resolution supported by the handheld -- even if it's the more powerful New 3DS. Sure, all the menus are full screen and crisp, but once in-game, there is a black border all the way around the screen, which was something I hadn't noticed in early footage of Mario Maker that quickly became apparent once playing the game myself. While size isn't everything, I don't think I'm being outrageous by thinking Nintendo should have been able to g??et this running at full-screen resolution.

On top of that, the graphics in New Super Mario Bros. levels are a bit jaggy and ugly in comparison to their Wii U counterpart or even to the graphics of New Super Mario Bros. 2. Otherwise, the graphics look essentially identical to the Wii U ?ve??rsion of the game.

If you were hoping to play some of those insanely difficult and cool levels you've s??een from the Wii U version, you can, but only if they randomly pop up in recommended courses or during the 100 Mario Challenge that pulls from a selection of levels made by players on the Wii U. As far as 3DS-made levels, you'll have to be lucky enough to Street Pass another player in real life who owns a copy of the game and made a level that isn't garbage. Spoilers: Most gamers aren't developers, so most levels suck; in that regards it is just like the Wii U version. Nintendo's curation helps things be a little better, but many levels are artsier or just memes rather than actual fun to play.

Also missing from this version is amiibo support and thus the mystery mushroom that allowed?? costumes to be used in levels based on popular characters. A strange choice considering amiibo are supported by the 3DS and that the costumes aren't exactly that elaborate. This also means you won't be seeing any Wii U levels that use the costumes on the 3DS (including the tons of post-release levels that Nintendo released), which surely takes a considerable amount of levels off the table.

Thankfully there are 100 Nintendo-developed levels available to play and they are damned good. Easily some of the best platforming levels on the handheld, if not anywhere. The levels themselves are introduced via funny little conversations between a girl and a pigeon obsessed with edamame, Mary O. and Yamamura, respectively. These conversations and levels both serve to teach the player interesting ways to use the provided items while making their own levels, though I'm not sure most people got the message. Each level has two medals to u??nlock by completing various tasks, which adds a lot of replayability and optional challenge to the game. Medals are easily my favorite addition exclusive to the 3DS port since they encouraged me to explore more of the levels instead of rushing to the flag.

As far as making levels goes, it is pretty identical to the Wii U version. You can select between the graphical styling of Super Mario Bros., SMB3, World, and New Super Mario Bros. U, as well as placing the items, enemies, and set piece??s of each. I don't see much of a reason to make levels, however, due to the StreetPass requirements. Even living in Columbus, Ohio, the biggest city in the state, I've yet to manage to StreetPass anyone else with the game sharing a level in the few weeks I've had it. The lack of online sharing is a huge mistake and perhaps the final nail in the coffin for most potential buyers.

If the 3DS version would have came out prio??r to the Wii U version, I think we would all feel very differently about it, but that isn't the case. Whil??e the main features are there, the lack of online rips the heart out of the game making it little more than a glorified way to play a random selection of levels, most of which aren't very good, even with Nintendo's curation.

On the other hand, the 100 included levels from Nintendo aren't to be missed if you want some of the best Super Mario Bros. levels released to date; they just aren't worth the $40 price tag alone. Super Mario Maker for 3DS isn't a bad game or even a bad creation tool, but without its online heart continuously pu??mping life into it, it feels more like a usele??ss skeleton, and nobody likes skeletons. NOBODY.

Discount does not require Prime

Edit: Apparently, this deal also extends to the 3DS version of Mario MakerPokémon Sun and Moon, as well as the recent Paper Mario: Color Splash. The article originally stated that the discount st?acks wit??h Prime savings, that was incorrect.

The Wii U is dead. Long live the Wii U.

Although The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been delayed repeatedly, Nintendo insists that it'll still come out on the Wii U next year. For anyone hoping to pick it up on Nintendo's current home c??onsole, Amazon has a pretty good deal going right now.

You can preorder Breath of the Wild for 15% off of its normal MSRP right now by following this link. This knocks the price from $60 down to $51. This discount does not stack with the 20% savings Amazon Prime members receive on all new games, but if you do have Prime you can preorder Breath of the Wild for as little as $47.99 before tax.

This sounds like a pretty solid deal on what will probably be the Wii U's swan song, though Nintendo has confirmed that Breath of the Wild w??ill also be available on the Switch. It's not clear whether this is a limited time promotion, so you may want to hurry if this deal piques your interest.

There's just no getting around the inability to share levels online

Nintendo is pushing out Super Mario Maker for 3DS right in time for the holidays, and while there's no doubt in my mind that it'll sell well as a portable Mario game, this version leaves a lot to be desired compared to its superior Wii U counterpart. Players can't directly share their custom-made levels online (only locally), and the many fun little referential Mystery Mushroom costumes aren't in, either.

You've probably heard all of that by now. Sorry to drone ?on! But maybe you'll pick up a thing or two in this overview video, like the new Yamamura lessons and challenge medals.

I hadn't noticed it in prior videos, but the performance with the New Super Mario Bros. style applied looks sluggish in spots. I'm worried about how that might run on th??e standard 3DS and 2DS.

No Mystery Mushrooms though

When Super Mario Maker for 3DS was revealed, Nintendo was quick to note that it would not contain Mystery Mushroom support. It ?uh...won't have a full online level browser either. So it'll not have two of the biggest features of the game -- but if you still want it, there's hope that amiibo figures will do something other than provide new Mystery costumes (maybe it's just the "Giant" and "Skinny" mushrooms?).

Listed directly on Nintendo's official amiibo compatibility site in the "upcoming" section is Super Mario Maker 3DS, right alongside of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. We've reached out to Nintendo for more information -- and hopefully they'll provide us with some tidbit of information that justifies a second buy. Because at the moment, I'm hard pressed to come up with any reason why I'd want to go through all the effort of making something if I have to share it locally (plus, the 3DS is jam-packed with good pure Mario platformers).

Prior to the Switch's reveal, Nintendo merged its handheld and console game dev????elopment departments into a single division, leading many t??o speculate that the Switch is meant to be a replacem??ent for the 3DS.

Kimishima didn't reveal anything about 3D??S games currently in development, but said "The Switch differs from 3DS, so we will continue to develop games intended for 3DS."

Although the Wii U is living on borrowed time, the 3DS enjoys the largest install base (60 million units sold) for any current system, so it makes sense that Nintendo would want to capitalize any way it can. There are still several games in the pipeline that we know about, including Ever Oasis, Poochy and Yoshi's Woolly World, Mario Maker 3DS, and Pikmin. You may have noticed that a couple of these are ports of Wii U games, and it seems likely that Nintendo wants to make sure that people ?who bought a 3DS and not a Wii U have ??the opportunity to buy games originally created for the less-popular console.

In Japan, some people perceive the 3DS as a child's toy,? something you play with before "graduating" to a smartphone or tablet. Nintendo may be repositioning the 3DS to fit in with this perception, and added fu?nctionality to the 3DS's StreetPass Mii Plaza earlier this year. There's a long history of Nintendo supporting consoles long after a new system comes out; there were new NES games coming out in 1994, over three years after the Super Nintendo released.

I've heard other game journalists refer to this as the "harvest" phase, a time to capitalize on the work that's gone into getting 3DS consoles into consumer's hands. For now, it makes perfect financial sense for Nintendo to support the 3DS family. Pokémon Sun and Moon have a chance to be the best-selling games this year, especially after the boost to Pokémon's popularity Pokémon GO provided over the summer. Even if the Switch is a huge success, it'll take years before it has anything approaching the in?stall base of Nintendo's current handheld.

What are the chances we also get a Nintendo Switch port?

Those of you who missed the joy and torment of Super Mario Maker because you don't own a Wii U will have much more of an incentive to look at December's 3DS port. It's a comparatively lesser version, given that you won't be able to share your custom levels online (only locally), but this is still a portable Mario game -- one with the classic sprites, no less! -- and that? has to count for something.

While I'm not sure it'll be enough, today's trailer tries to justify owning both versions. On 3DS, Mario Maker will have 100 new pre-made courses with challenge medals for tasks like beating a level without letting go of "right" on the d-pad, and escorting a bunch of Boos to the end goal (so you can erase them from existence, like you do). Could be good, depending on ho?w original the rest o?f the scenarios are.

Do you mind, though?

With the knowledge that the 3DS port of Super Mario Maker won't let creators upload their levels online (they're just sharable locally??), this latest omission -- a lack of 3D support -- feels insignificant.

That said, I know some people can stand to play their games with the 3D slider cranked way up and others actually prefer it that way long-term??. Me? I try it once, for several seconds, and flip it back off.

Anyway, it'll all be for naught with Mario Maker on 3DS --? the North American box art confirms as much.

If anyone is g??etting this version, they are probably big into ha?ndheld gaming or, sadly, they don't have a Wii U. I can't see any other reason why you'd opt for this over the original, otherwise.

July 5

Nintendo hasn't even hinted at when we'll see the end of Super Mario Maker, but the end of Splatoon is nigh. It'll kick off with a massive series of events in July, which will bring the last Splatfest, a concert, more amiibo, and n?ow, the appearance of ??the Squid Sisters themselves.

You can get a brief look at the duo below -- to unlock both, you'll need to complete their event course twice. The character DLC will launch on July 8. Just a tad before that on July 5 will see the release of a balance patch (2.9.0), which will fix some effects and bugs.

I'm constantly thinking about how much Nintendo could improve this game with just a few simple tweaks. I mean slopes, for one, would go a long way and create some really interesting concepts (I can see all the "race" stages now). Even adding in a new full-on theme, like a whole hog Mario 2 DLC for $4.99 could be a huge hit ??if done right.

Either way, many speculate that Nintendo sees the potential of the Maker series, and is saving new iterations (a Zelda version is rumored) for the NX. It's sad that the Wii U situation is so dire that the publisher is basically giving up on it.

'Makers of Mario'

When it comes to costumes, Nintendo's support for Super Mario Maker is unwavering. But bigger issues, like expanding its level search system, or adding major objects like slopes, keep piling up. Thankfully the Mario community rose up to meet the former challenge??, creating ??the site "Makers of Mario."

One major feature includes playlist creation support (like queuing up everything from Awesome Games Done Quick), and although it's only hit open beta this week, the team is stalwart in its commitment to keeping it running. Hopefully one day after Nintendo abandons Mario Maker and flips ?the light switch off, this site is still around.

Super FIFA Maker

I only go back to Super Mario Maker every so often (a few more game themes, and the use of costumes in any theme but the ??8-bit rendition would help), but when I do, I usually come across some new magical thing that the community has figured out.

This time, it's "Super FIFA Maker," a stage that uses a power-up to allow players to knock around a "soccer ball," into accompanying goals. Taking place underwater it'?s not a versus mode, but rather a fully fledged level that requires the player to obtain a key.

This footage from likandooTV shows off Umut_POW's stage -- I love the l??ittle touches like the crowd cheerin?g in the stands.

Haha what

So uh, yeah.

Nintendo has announced that by way of an event course called "Shaun's Mossy Mole Mischief," Shaun the Sheep, of television, movie, and Wallace & Gromit fame, will be hitting Super Mario Maker tomorrow. He comes complete with adorable ?sounds and a simplistic 8-bit costume that does ?indeed look like a sheep.

At one point I thought that Nintendo might run out of ideas, and that they had jumped the shark with the literal real-life car, but here we are. Who's next, Spongebob? Doug Funnie's Quailman? All three Aaahh!!! Real Monsters stacked on top of each other? The sky is the limit for Mario Maker.

Easier sorting

Although it's been a while since we've gotten a hefty Super Mario Maker update (outside of the random 8-bit cameo), Nintendo has been regularly patching the game to ensure that it's up to code. That includes the recent 1.43 update, that allows "Super Exper??????????????????????????t" to be filtered, and accommodations for a clearer Star Ranking system.

I wonder if this did well enough to justify that rumored Legend of Zelda Maker project that may or may not be related to the NX? I just hope we get slopes added to Mario before that possibly, hopefully real thing?? actually hits.

Their Super Mario Maker level even has an eggplant

Coming off of Babymetal (what a lively comment thread that was!), it makes sense Nintendo would go with something more familiar for the next Super Mario Maker costume.

The Ice Climbers? Why, sure! We haven't seen that dynamic duo in a while and, heck, they're originally from an 8-bit game, so the transition to the Super Mario Bros. style should be fairly straightforward.

Seems like a safe bet, all around. Bonus poin??ts for this eggplant nod:

Someone at Nintendo must be a fan

The metal idol group Babymetal is coming to Super Mario Maker as a character costume, which is something I should probably find strange, but don't -- not after the pigeon, Barbara the Bat, and Chitoge Kirisaki. Nintendo has gone to unexpected places wit?h this game ??and I'm loving it.

I wasn't familiar with Babymetal until now, but Holmes says "They used to have a lot spookier videos, with a drummer dressed like a skeleton, but I can't find them ATM." He was thoughtful enough to drop this video for "Gimme Chocolate!!" in ours laps, and what the, I kinda dig it.

General terms explained

As you may have heard, Nintendo has been deleting select Super Mario Maker stages lately, including a series of levels from popular streamers. The problem is, they don't really explain why this is happening, and these bans can come without warning, citing broad strokes like "inappr??o?priate content," for levels that have nothing of the sort.

So Nintendo came up with some new guidelines (which you c??an read below) that either expand upon known points or add other tidbits in, and they're still very vague. They'll really ha?ve to take a good look at the community's concerns and come up with something a bit more airtight to avoid more unrest.

Chalk this up to Nintendo's inexperience with online communities and online services in general. They're getting better, as evidenced by the new iteration of My Nintendo and the wonderful support for Splatoon, but they still have a ways to go.

I like difficult games as much as the next guy, but I draw the line at trying to best every "insane!" Super Mario Maker level known to man.

But given the massive sales it's seen, there's always going to be at least one person in the entire world that answers the call, and that's just what ReflectvistFox did w?ith a 0% completion level tit?led "POWer Shell," created by imthe666st.

Another great cameo

Starfy is a lesser-known character from the Nintendo universe, but that might be because he's not wholly owned by Nintendo. In fact, he's co-owned by Tose, creators of the Game & Watch franchise, as the Legend of Starfy games were only published by the Big N.

While only one Starfy game was released in the west, that isn't stopping them from putting the character in Super Mario Maker as an event costume reward. Hopefully this leads to more visibility in the future, as the last Starfy title was released in 2008.

It's not as genius as say, the Triforce Heroes tri-Link costume, but it's a nice little homage.

Nintendo has done a fantastic job so far with supporting Mario Maker, and I h?ope it doesn't stop anytime soon. Though it would be nice to see some DLC for other themes outside of the retro getup.

Cute

The Wolf Link amiibo that's bundled with Twilight Princess HD comes with an unexpected bonus -- functionality in Super Mario Maker!

Using the toy will morph in an 8-bit version ?for use, which comes with some cute animations and sound effects. There's no event course yet that indicates a way to unlock the character without actually buying the bundle.

From Daigasso! Band Brothers

Nintendo is adding a new event costume to Super Mario Maker in the form of Barbara the Bat. The only reason I know who Barbara is, is from her assist trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and her trophy.

It's almost endearing that Nintendo offers zero context for a lot of these obscure Maker characters. Like, instead of ?explaining it on its social channels, or even an in-game mini intro of sorts tha??t helps illuminate her place in gaming history, it's just "hey this is Barbara!"
