My absolute favorite among the game's wide array, the Paragon personality can be seen as the perfect choice for those looking to get a huge boost in strength and one-shot enemies no matter their game stage in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake.

But how can you get the personality at the start of the game? And for those looking to battle with a Paragon duo, is it possible to switch to it later on or get a party member with it? Here are all the ways to get the Paragon Personality in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake.

How to Get the Paragon Personality at the Start of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake

You can get the Paragorn personality at the start of your journey in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake by?? completing the Monster Personality Test without killing more than 2 NPCs. You can unlock the test by ??answering the questions asked by the goddess in the following way:

  • Question #1: Do you believe that victory can be won in the field of battle? Yes
  • Question #2: Do you prefer spells and sorcery to swords and sweat? No
  • Question #3: Do you find the company of unfamiliar people tiresome? No
  • Question #4: Are you able to prevent failure from preying upon your mind? Yes
  • Question #5: Do you find yourself unable to argue with others, even if you disagree with them strongly? No
  • Question #6: Do you enjoy physical pursuits? Yes
  • Question #7: Can even the most minor of matters irritate you? No
  • Question #8: Do you believe that a promise, once made, can under no circumstances be broken? Yes (Answering this question or the one below in any other way will lock you out of the Personality Test)
  • Question #9: Do you believe in a power higher than that of man? Yes

Although it is possible to unlock the test by following a path different from the one above, I recommend that you restart your playthrough until your first question matches ours. Apart from that, all the following inquiries will be directly related to your previous answer. Differently from the Vamp and like the Tough Cookie personality, Paragon is not gender locked.

How to Complete the Monster Personality Test

After answering the questions as shown above and starting the Monster Personality Test on DQ 3, you can complete it with??out killing more tha??n a single NPC by avoiding the dog and then making your way down the main path. Keep in mind that it is impossible to complete the test without torching the villager by the well.

How to Switch a Personality to Paragon in Dragon Quest 3

If you fail to get the personality at the beginning or just wa?nt to turn a party member into a Paragon, you will be able to do so by either using The Champion's Code book or equipping the Mighty Armlet. Keep in mind that equipping the item will only change your chosen character's personality when they are we??????????????????????????aring it. When creating a party member on the second floor of Patty's Party Planning Place, using five Seeds of Strength will allow them to come with the Paragon personality, although whether or not they will get it will still be up to chance.

There’s always been some debate around whether or not games are art, but in the late aughts and early 0s, some decided to really push for it. Sometimes, this resulted in kind of mostly successful experiments like Citizen Abel: Gravity Bone or Limbo, while other times we got more unfortunate, pretentious attempts like The Path.

It was a really insecure time for video games. We seemed to want some sort of permission to take this hobby seriously, so it’s like, collectively, as players and developers, we tried to prove video games were something they weren’t. Oh, they’re totally art. You can see that in games about flipping eggs and trimming hedges. But it’s more about harnessing the interactive element to get that piece of yourself across. A developer might try to capture how they think or see the world by asking you to live it. I’m not sure what The Path was supposed to say. Don’t do what you’re told?

We’ve largely moved past that, or at the very least, games that are 100% message have more of a purpose. A self-assuredness. It often feels more earnest and less pretentious. Which makes Miniatures something of a blast from the past.

Miniatures (PC [Reviewed], Switch, Mobile)
Developer: Other Tales Interactive
Publisher: Other Tales Interactive
Released: November 14th, 2024
MSRP: $5.99

Now, I’m not actually saying Miniatures is pretentious. No, I'm the pretentious one today. But, it’s at least making no mystery of the fact that it’s a digital art exhibit. What I mean is that it is only interactive-adjacent, and it is very art. I wou??ldn’t even call it narratively focused because the stories are pretty abstract. You’ll either connect with them, maybe just find them amusing, or maybe you won’t.

For me, it reminds me of extremely late nights o?f being bored in front of Teletoon. Ni??ghts when my parents were out, so I had free reign of the TV and could watch whatever bizarre concoction was on the station in the later hours.

Teletoon would often air things from The National Film Board of Canada, which was actually the butt of a Simpsons joke back in the day (not while they were still good). Very cultural stuff, but a lot of it was extremely strange. Sometimes, it would be something relaxingly amusing. Oth?er times, it would be a piece of Canadiana, with the deepest of it being something from our aboriginal cultures. When you’re a pre-teen at 11 pm, it doesn’t matter what it was. Any attempt by an animation student to stretch their legs would hit like some sort of forbidden fever dream.

That’s what Miniatures took me back to; a decaffeinated Saturday night in my father’s La-Z-Boy. It’s four short chapters that sometimes make you poke the screen. On Switch and mobile, you can literally poke the screen, but her??e I was just poking it with my mouse pointer. Clicking, if you will.

//youtu.be/3Tma3zvYOoM?feature=shared

I’m not trying to be dismissive, but the interactivity is very basic in Miniatures. One of the chapters has you trying to arrange a band of small sand-critters in a little sand-critter town in an extremely roundabout way. This was by?? far the most amusing one for me, as you largely press on places you think something should happen and then watch while that something happens. It’s well-animated and amusing, so that’s something.

There’s o?ne where you pan the screen around to follow a story, and every so often, you need to click on something in the environment to uncover a trigger tha??????????????????????????t allows you to move on. This one was my least favorite, not because of the lack of interactivity but because I didn’t connect with it. As far as I could see, it was a directionless story that wanted to look like it had something to say but didn’t say anything at all. Or maybe I just didn’t see the message.

As for the other two, I can at least understand what they’re trying to communicate, but I think a lot of Miniatures fails because it will elicit a feeling and then not do anything with it. They don't use that feeling to deliver any sort of message. These are short, short little chapters miniature, if you will so if they want you to just soak in the feeling, then there isn’t much time to do so. One strength in the artistic side of video games is that by having the player take part in something, you can hold their head beneath whatever you’re trying to convey, and when they're good and soaked, hit them with what you want to say. Miniatures neither has a point nor does it ??drown ?you for very long.

Miniatures Sand Castle people.
Screenshot by Destructoid

But, with those last two, I at least got the vibe they were putting down. One seemed to focus on childhood loneliness and discovery, while another gave a sense of tension and dread. I’ve found I’m typically able to pick up on subtext, even in games that aren’t taking an art-first approach, so I’m not deaf to what’s going on in Miniatures.? I mostly have two problems. Number one: I don’t think it leverages the advantages of an interac?tive medium for conveying ideas. Number two: I don’t connect with the ideas that are here.

This makes it kind of hard to review a game like this because its effectiveness will vary from person to person, and I can’t speak to what you’ll feel. Maybe you’ll see yourself reflected in one or all of the games here. What I can say is that from an interactive standpoint, as well as a narrative one, I find Miniatures lacking. In comparison to other games that I would applaud for their contributions and approach to the art form, this wouldn’t be high on the list, but I wouldn’t throw it away who?lesale, either.

Words have weight, which is why I swing them around with reckless abandon. I’m not sure that’s what Great God Grove is about unless you only take it literally. It’s more abo?ut identity, authority, communication, and misun?derstanding.

It’s the follow-up to Smile For Me by Limbolane. But while the two games have? similarities, you might miss the relation just by looking at it. One game has you interred in an asylum, while the other has you fixing the relations??hips of the gods. However, what they have in common is head nods and fixing people.

Great God Grove (Switch, Xbox Series X|S, PC [Reviewed])
Developer: Limbolane
Publisher: LimboLane, Fellow Traveller
Released: November 15th, 2024
MSRP: $19.99

Great God Grove puts you in the boots of a Godpoke, which is, as far as I can tell, a sort of courier. To be honest, I’m not clear on a few concepts here. For all I know, a Godpoke might just be someone who wears a poncho. You arrive at the eponymous grove just in time to see the gods close a giant rift in the sky that threatens to end the world. The problem is that the gods aren’t entirely interested in saving the world. They’re far too wrap??ped up in their own problems.

Previous to your arrival, the last messenger of the gods, the mysterious King, sent letters ??out to all the gods. The letters are obvious attempts to drive wedges between them??, but as King had always been a trusted friend and reliable enough to be elected to become the next god, they took those words at face value. Now, nothing is right in the grove despite being a crucial time for the whole world.

Before you even get to the grove, King’s trusty mail cannon, the Megapon, lands directly in your lap. With this device, you can suck the word?s out of one person’s mouth and slap them in the face of another. Or just right?? back at them. That happens sometimes.

Being the wise person you are (or maybe just because it’s a linear narrative), you set to work righting King’s wrong. Immediately, you’re deputized by Inspekta, the God of Leadership, to help their lackeys, the Bizzyboys, figure out what happened to King and why they decided to hurt everyone’s ??feelings. However, the leader of the Bizzyboys, Capochin, is only out to please his boss, while the rest of the members are completely incompetent and hapless. So, it all comes down to you.

//youtu.be/fxYga_HqQis?feature=shared

Largely, Great God Grove resembles a point-and-click adventure game. You can’t suck up any sentence or grouping of words you want; only specific, highlighted things th?at characters say can go in your Megapon. In this way, they work like any item in something like Secret of Monkey Island. You find hints in the words of the people you’re talking to and deliver something that will get them to perform some task for you, even if that’s just moving out of the way.

There’s a bit of a learning curve. For the first area, I wasn’t picking up on the cues, but after the second, I was able to proceed with some expedience. I didn’t get hung up very often, but I have to wonder if that’s going to be everyone’s experience. Great God Grove has an unusual design language built around its central hook, and I’m not sure if gaming literacy will be as important here as actual literacy. Iâ€?™m not sure if every player can adjust, or maybe I’m the odd one because I had some issues?? in the first area. I can only speak to my own experience, though, and in my experience, I didn’t have much of a problem for most of the game.

Each area of the grov??e is home to one or two gods. In each one, King has spread some sort of misinformation to throw things into cha??os, and your overall goal is to sort things out to restore the status quo. Sounds easy, but being an adventure game, it takes more than an apology to work things out.

What really elevates Great God Grove above a typical adventure game is an abundance of style. It mixes 2D characters and objects with a 3D world Paper Mario-style. It’s based around Day Lane’s distinctive, sketchy, expressive style. While animation is sparse, each character has a massive range of poses and emotions that they transi?tion to? each new window of dialogue. It can be quite captivating.

Many of the gods are rendered in full 3D, but they’re styled in such a way that it can be ha?rd to tell. Like the 2D folks, the gods spring from pose to pose, ?with more traditional animation thrown in occasionally to spice things up.

There are also live-action puppet vignettes that you can watch for not much reason aside from enrichment. They generally just involve the Bizzybo?ys giving advice and some background ?information about what’s going on in the world. As it turns out, I’m really into puppets eating sandwiches.

There isn’t much out that that looks quite like Great God Grove. The style is executed so consistently and with so much blunt-force pizzazz that it’s incredible that just a handful of people put the whole thing together. There are so ma???ny facets of its visual style that look as though they would be very difficult to execute, so the fact that they didn’t choose an easier, more conventional route is impressive. It pays off because, if absolutely nothing else, the way this game looks will be seared into your eyeholes.

Great God Grove has a lot to say about identity and the way people will stomp on others just for recognition. The gods themselves aren’t much different than ordinary peop?le. They just exist on a less accessible plane of existence. As such, even though you can walk up and talk to them, their followers seem to just believe what they hear and speculate on what they might be thinking, which often is what leads to miscommunication. Misinformation is rife, and people take advantage of that.

Humans seem hardwired to climb. There’s a fear that our lives will be meaningless or forgotten, so we strive for recognition. And to secure our recognition, we’ll often stomp down the people beneath us. We yearn to wear the stomping boots, and a decent person can turn awful the moment they put them on. You face a lot of that in Great God Grove.

At the same time, it’s a very optimistic game. With your intervention, the troublemakers you meet see the error in their ways and express a desire to atone for their actions. Call me cynical, but I find most people are more likely to become defensive when faced with the consequences of their actions. People dig their stomping boots in and seek justification for what they’ve done. Maybe I just ne??ed a stronger word cannon.

Great God Grove prepare the sacrifice.
Screenshot by Destructoid

In terms of gameplay, I could honestly take or leave Great God Grove. It has great pacing and a unique approach to the adventure genre, but I find the situations in which it’s applied general?ly unexciting. Not overly mundane, but I think with urgent focus on the threat and more dangerous situations, the dialogue would have more of a chance to shine. But it already shines pretty brightly.

Great God Grove is an immensely polished and precisely executed game, and that’s the most impressiv?e part about it. Its pacing and aesthetic are finely honed and there’s nary a loose thread to be found. A bit more punch and the narrative would be perfect, but it presents a good amount of depth to sink into. It also features puppets gnawing on a gigantic hoagie, and really, what more can you ask for?

I always love hearing about no-brainer tips that are easily overlooked. They're small advice tidbits, yet they're impactful over time and make you do a double-take for failing to notice them. For my fellow Stardew Valley fans who enjoy c??aring for animals, this one goes out to you.

Caring for animals, at least in Stardew, is simple. Despite this, it can be overwhelming for new players who just want to farm fruit??s and vegetables forever. Fortunately, we have a one-stop shop for all the animal care info you'll ever need.

Where to buy animals in Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley offers multiple ways for you to unlock pets and farm animals. Below is ev??ery animal you can purchase or obtain throughout your playthrou??gh:

  • Dog, cat, and turtles
  • Horses
  • Chicken
  • Duck
  • Rabbit
  • Cows
  • Goat
  • Sheep
  • Pig
  • Ostrich
  • Dinosaurs
  • Slimes

After earning at least 1,000 gold in your playthrough, Marnie will approach your farm, asking if you want to adopt a dog or cat. For the most part, your choice is final unless you buy Butterfly Powder from Krobus. From Year Two onward, you can buy a pet license from Marnie at?? her ranch, allowing you?? to unlock turtles or buy more cats and dogs.

Speaking of Marnie's Ranch, her shop is ??the key to unlocking other animals. After building a barn or coop on your farm through Robin's Carpenter, head to Marnie's Ranch south of the farm to buy some animals. Below is every animal option and their prices:

Animal Farm Building Price
Chicken Coop 800g
Cow Barn 1,500g
Duck Big Coop 1,200g
Goat Big Barn 4,000g
Pig Deluxe Barn 16,000g
Sheep Deluxe Barn 8,000g
Rabbit Deluxe Coop 8,000g
Ostrich Barn N/A
Dinosaurs Big Coop N/A

The exception to this is dinosaurs, ostriches, and golden chickens. Ostriches require you to get Ostrich Eggs from solving Ginger Island's tenth journal scrap or opening Volcano Dungeon chests, making them one of the rarest animals in Stardew Valley. Dinosaur Eggs are slightly easier to find, as they spawn in artifact spots around the mountain, fishing treasure chests, and from Pepper Rex drops. Lastly, Golden Chickens are a Perfection reward, requiring you to 100 percent Stardew Valley to unlock.

Another exception is slimes. As you explore the mines ??and defeat slimes, there's a small chance you'll pick up their eggs. Although these eggs alone sell for quite a bit, you can also build a Slime Hutch to incubate them, allowing you to have your own slime family. Just watch out; they'll inflict damage if you walk into them without a Slime Charmer ring on.

How to build Coops and Barns

If you haven't built a coop or barn yet, Robin's Carpenter Shop up in the mountains? is your first stop. Head up here and interact with her shop to find various building options, with coops and barns being among your choices.

Here's every farm animal-related buil?ding a??nd their material costs:

Once you build a coop or barn, you can walk in and place items like the auto-coll?ector or heater to make the space more comforting for your anima?ls. You'll also find a feeding area at the back to place hay. If you have a silo, it'll automatically dispense hay here as long as you have it full.

How to pet animals in Stardew Valley

Petting your farm animals and pets is one of the best ways to raise your friendship, as? it'll gradually increase your friendship, barring any issues that significantly decrease it. You can pet your animals by right-clicking, tapping, or pressing A on each animal, depending on your platform. When in doubt, press your interact button.

You know how you need to greet/pet your farmyard animals each day to get a little heart and grow your bond so they produce the highest-quality goods? Well, for many of us especially those of us with more goats, chickens, cows, and pigs than we probably need the morning ritual can be fussy. Stardew animals can get all bunched up in clo?se quarters, and it's a little pesky to greet them once so that you don't accidentally bring up their friendship rating menu when you tend to them.

Although you can go up to each animal and pet them, you can take things a step further by holding the pet/interact button and running up to them it'll work?? perfectly. You'll get friendship points with every animal, and you won't have to pull up the dreaded menu.

Here's a demonstration of the trick on PC from Reddit user Boiled_potato8:

//www.reddit.com/r/StardewValley/comments/l192s1/took_me_ages_to_realize_you_could_just_click_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

It'll save yo?u time in the long run, making it relatively easy to raise your friendships as y??ou gain more farm animals.

Alternatively, you can purchase the Auto-Petter from JojaMart?? for?? 50,000g or pick it up in Skull Cavern chests. It also can appear in mines during Danger In The Deep and with the Shrine of Challenge active. Having an Auto-Petter in either a coop or barn lets you pet your animals automatically without you ever having to interact with them.

The only downside is that? your animals will receive half the friendship points they'd get from you doing it manually. The moral of the story? Human-animal interaction is more important than having a machine do it for you.

How to raise animal friendship in Stardew Valley

Alongside petting your animals, you can also increase their friendship by milking and shearing those that live in your barn. Although keeping them fed with hay will prevent them from losing friendship, letting them outside to eat grass will raise it, with blue grass doubling the effect.

The real challenge comes from pre??venting your animals from getting upset. Not feeding them and leaving them outside overnight will decrease their friendship significantly, with the latter having a small chance of wild animals coming by and making a mess of things. Not petting or talking to your animals will also lower their friendship.

Stardew Valley animal mood
Someone's unhappy. Screenshot by Destructoid

In short, paying attention to your animals and feeding them will natural??ly raise their relationship with you ov??er time. Interacting with them twice shows a profile detailing their age, mood, and hearts toward you. The maximum you can earn per animal is five hearts or 1000 friendship points.

Once you reach Farming level five, you can unlock the Rancher or Tiller professions. Choosing Rancher raises the value of animal products, allowing you to make more money later. More importantly, though, you'll unlock Coopmaster and Shepherd at level ten, letting you befriend animals quickly. If you want to create a massive farm full o?f animals, picking Rancher and Coopmaster or Shepherd is a solid call.

What does max animal friendship do?

The higher your friendship is with an animal, t?he higher their odds of producing higher-quality items. Their daily mood also determines this, which can fluctuate depending on how well you cared for them the day before. For example, a happy five-star rabbit has significantly higher odds of producing a rabbit fo??ot than an unhappy zero-star one.

All animal produce types in Stardew Valley

Ev?ery animal has their own products you can sell, cook wi??th, or turn into artisan goods. While some are more valuable than others, they're all useful in their own way. Below is every animal and their product list.

Animal Products
Chicken Egg
Large Egg
Cow Milk
Large Milk
Duck Duck Egg
Duck Feather
Goat Goat Milk
Goat Large Milk
Pig Truffle
Sheep Wool
Rabbit Wool
Rabbit's Foot
Ostrich Ostrich Egg
Dinosaurs Dinosaur Egg

Like with most Stardew Valley items, quality and professions matter. Similarly, while Coopmaster and Shepherd help you befriend animals quicker, Artisan in the Tiller branch raises Artisan good value by 40 percent, making it extremely useful if you sell a lo??t of cheese or wine.

Do animal hearts decay in Stardew Valley?

Yes, they do decay, albeit very slowly. Much like with villagers, you won't notice much animal heart decay unless you go weeks or entire seasons without feeding or petting them. If you just forget to pet ??them occasionally or go a day or two without refilling their food, they'll express annoyance but won't rapidly drop their hearts. Generally speaking, raising their friendship is much easier than decreasing it.

Can animals die in Stardew Valley?

Although morbid, the answer is yes: your Stardew Valley animals can technically die. Altho??ugh it's impossib?le for them to die from starvation, temperature, or low friendship, leaving them outside overnight can cause wild animals to wreak havoc on your farm. Thankfully, you won't see the wild animals in action, but you will hear it happen.

What's the solution, then? Make sure you keep your animals fenced in and repair any broken ones that degrade over time. ?You'll also want to either leave them in their barns and coops or only have them out during t??he day before herding them back inside and repeating the process.

What if you can't find an animal but haven't seen the wild animal cutscene? More often than not, your animals will roam around? your farm, especially if you have broken (or no) fences. I've seen my animals appear in the corners of my map, stranded for days until I finally noticed their disappearance. I'm lucky I didn't get the cutscene. Your best bet is clearing out any obstacles that can mess up animal pathing or be very proactive in building fences.

I have so many arcade games available on my Switch; i??t’s obscene. Also, kind of expensive, which we’ll get to. But with the short length o??f your standard arcade title, they’re easy to dive into when you need a snack.

So, here’s Irem Collection Volume 2, which is, as you have most likely guessed, the follow-up to Irem Collection Volume 1. Irem is perhaps best known for their R-Type series, but the developer was among the best in the arcade days with hits like Kickle Cubicle and Undercover Cops; games that could go under the radar and are therefore ??ripe for inclusion in collection??s.

But perhaps the most important contribution from Irem is Metal Slug. Not the actual game that was Nazca and SNK but it was the place where the staff behind Metal Slug first stretched their legs before setting out on their own. And nowhere is this more apparent than in Gun Force II, one of the games in this collection. There? are also two other games here.

Released: November 14th, 2024
MSRP: $24.99

I’m going to go through the individual games included in this collection, but I want to give a word about how they’re packed: awkward. Kind of awkward. Not every game collection needs to be Atari 50, but Irem Collection Volume 2 is bare???bones on top of unintuitive. The volume of the menu, for example, is substantially higher than the games themselves. Each game has a “casualand “classicmode, the difference being that you can’t participate in the leaderboards in casual mode, but you get access to game settings, cheats, and rewind. I’m guessing that they’re presented separately for leaderboard reasons, but I don’t see why they can’t just warn you when you try to turn cheats on. You can use autofire on both, which seems strange.

It uses an emulation platform that I’ve seen before in Ratalaika/ININ re-releases like the Cyber Citizen Shockman games and the Ninja Jajamaru: Retro Collection. Th?at’s not necessarily a good or bad thing. I ??just want you to know what you’re in for, if you’re familiar.

There’s no supplemental documentation or credits for the original?? games, which lacked them at release, and we still don’t know who some of the developers were for the games. What’s galling is that the physical collector’s edition of the game comes with things like reproduction arcade flyers and a visual compendium, so it’s not like they don’t have anything to show, they just chose not to include them in a digital format.

Annoying, but let’s talk about the games.

Air Duel

The odd one out in the collection is Air Duel. It’s the only scrolling shoot-’em-up of the bunch. It’s extremely challenging, but you’re not exactly going to run out of quarters here. It'll be a real climb if you want to?? place o?n the leaderboards, though.

You can choose between a helicopter and your typical futuristic jet-thing. The jet thing works about how you’d expect one to work in this kind of game, but the chopper’s gunfire will turn in the direction you’re pressing. It’s awkward at first, but learning to use it gives you the advantage of being able to stay out of the direct line of gunfire and still attack. I didn’t like it the first time I tried it, but after clearing?? the first level, I can’t imagine playing without ?it.

About a zillion of these types of games were released through the 0s and 0s, and you can get a lot of them on Switch. In comparison, Air Duel is fine. I like it, but it’s not likely to be the game I reach for next time I’m in the mood. That will probably be something like Raiden or Raystorm. On the other hand, I now have the worldwide high score on this game. Take that, three other people who have early access to Irem Collection Volume 2. You suck.

GunForce (Arcade)

Irem Collection 2 Gun Force (1)
Screenshot by Destructoid

I’m technically going out of order here, but I feel like the arcade version should come first. GunForce is a run-and-gun like Contra, except with more vehicles and way clunkier. Its subtitle is em>Battle Fire Engulfed Terror Island, which is just an incredible mash of words.

GunForce is so clunky that it might take a bit to acclimate. Your dude moves so stiffly, and enemies just pour in from the side of the screen. Crowd control and learning to dodge don’t come as naturally as you’d probably find in a Contra derivative.

Once you do get a handle on things, it can be an enjoyable game. It gives you a new vehicle practically every few steps and these range from jeeps to helicopters. Powerups drop constantly, and you’re able to grab onto overhanging objects. It’s just getting into or out of a helicopter, climbing a ladder, or letting go of an object that can take a bit of fighting, and in a game like GunForce, a little bit of fighting can mean another lost lif??e.

GunForce (Console)

Irem Collection 2 Gun Force Console
Screenshot by Destructoid

I keep forgetting that GunForce even came out on SNES/Super Famicom. That’s probably because it’s not talked about all that much. Not in my experience, anyway. Its inclusion here is more of a “good to havethan a “need to havesituation. It’s largely the same as the arcade version but squished down for less powerful hardware?. It plays very faithfully, with the biggest difference being that, on classic difficulty, you’re saddled with a handful of continues. Occasionally, there are too few continues since a bad situation can make you drop lives fast. Other times, there are too many because there are only a few levels.

The biggest drawback is that it’s a lot less colorful. GunForce wasn’t a colorful game to begin with, but anything vivid it did got flattened out on SNES. It’s a shame becau??se the console was capable of more. It’s still an okay translation of an okay game, but being a shadow of another game in the collection makes its inclusion feel somewhat unnecessary. Good to have, though.

Gun Force II

Irem Collection 2 Gun Force 2
Screenshot by Destructoid

Gun Force II is the last arcade game to be developed by Irem. Named Geo Storm in Japan, it’s largely a different beast from the original GunForce. What links them is the fact that they’re both run-and-gun shooters, and they have you jump in??to a tonne of different vehicles throughout the level?s. Otherwise, they feel pretty distinct.

There’s still a noticeable degree of clunk to be found in Gun Force II, but it makes up for it by being absurd??ly over-the-top. Your dude comes equipped with two guns at all times, and at any given time, 80% of the screen is covered in explosions. It’s a ??game that never lets up, constantly throwing new situations at you. Turning on autofire just makes things more insane. And more fun.

It’s not Metal Slug, but you can see the similarities. You rescue captured people who, in this case, are scantily clad women in torn clothing. The enemy's screams are exactly the same. You can also see a lot of art style similarities between the two, though it’s less pronounced and consistent in Gun Force II. Only Takeshi Okui is confirmed to have worked on the art, but I’d be very surprised if he was the only one from the Metal Slug team.

//youtu.be/22HO5Ny9wNc?feature=shared

The Collection

Gun Force II is easily the standout of the bunch. I’ve talked to smaller developers who have worked on run-and-gun shooters, and they often cite i?t as an inspiration. It maybe doesn’t make the whole collection worth it, but it’s definitely worth playing.

And that’s kind of the hang-up here: whether or not the collection is worth it. It’s one standout title (Gun Force 2), a good one (Air Duel), and one that is simply okay (GunForce). You get different regional versions where applicable, as well as the console port of GunForce. There isn’t really any supplemental material (which isn’t totally unusual), and the UI could be better. The value isn’t quite where it should be. It’s slightly more expensive than buying three Arcade Archives titles and worse value than something like Taito Milestones.

So, overall, Irem Collection Volume 2 is less than spectacular. If the g??ames really appea??l to you, then the collection doesn’t diminish them, but it also doesn’t elevate them. In terms of value, you could do worse, but it’s not an immediate recommendation. They’re your quarters, do what you want with them.

Visual novels have found a bit of a home on the Nintendo Switch. The combination of portability and easy pick-up, put-down feel of the Switch goe?s really well with ??long, involved, engrossing visual novels. Hence I decided to put together this list of the best visual novels on the Nintendo Switch.

Ever since I got my Switch, I've read a good amount of VNs on it, whether in a hotel bed, on the couch, or on a plane. It helps that the genre has been drawing more attention, with mainstays like Ace Attorney or surprise hits like Paranormasight offering plen??ty of promise. There's also a lot to sift through another reason I threw this list together.

These are 20 fantastic visual novels to try, whether you're a newcomer to the genre, or just looking for something a little different. Of note: I'm trying to keep this list mostly to a traditional VN interpretation. (I brought up "what's a visual novel" in Slack and it started a mild conflict.) So if you're wondering where fantastic games like 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim are, there's a decent chance I excluded them, in the interest of keeping this list narrow and focused. (I do wholeheartedly endorse 13 Sentinels though.)

With that ?in mind, let's open up the Switch library and talk about visual novels.

The House in Fata Morgana

Why not start the list off with a heavy hitter? The House in F??ata Mor??gana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition brings the 2012 classic to the Nint??endo Switch with both the main story and a bevy of extra content. After waking up in a strange, eerie mansion, you relive the lives of various people with the assistance of an unnam??ed maid.

Events will intertwine across history, with lots of in??trigue and suspense. If you like period dramas and/or ghost stories, this will probably be up your alley, as it's also frequently hailed as one of the best visual novels to gr??ace the Switch.

Danganronpa series

Okay, I'm twisting the rules a bit, mostly because many of these series are in collections like the Danganronpa Decadence physical version for Switch (each entry is available individually on the eShop). Each entry in the series centers on some sort of killing game, where the best and brightest students are locked in a location and told they can only leave if they "graduate." As in, kill a fellow student and get away with it in the ensuing? trial.

Your job is to find the culprit!

Alongside roaming the world?? and hanging out with characters for social links between murder investigations, there's also a bunch of trials with minigames to help you find the truth. It's a compelling, interesting series that pulls a few fa??ntastic left-field twists out.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy

The original run of Phoenix Wright games on the Nintendo DS opened me up to this genre in the first place. With the collection on Nintendo Switch, it's easy to play the trilogy of Ace Attorney entries t?hat set the stage for many to fol?low after.

As defense lawyer Phoenix Wright, you have to defend your client from going to jail. Individual cases are good fun, but they also wind together throughout the whole trilogy in ways that make this a very, very fun read. Absolutely recommended for cautious first-timers looking for a visual novel for??? their Switch.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles

If you're looking for something that feels more modern, then head back in time for the historical fiction take on Ace Attorney. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles follows Ryunosuke Naruhodo, as he gets swept up in courtroom drama in the late 19th century. This particular version packs the two Great Ace Attorney games together into a duology that is, honestly, still some of my favorite storytelling on the Swit??ch. It's a roller-coaster of ups and downs, with some great sleuthing and deducing, memorable characters, and incredible payoffs in the second game's trials. It's good for newcomers, but an absolute no-brainer if you liked the original Ace Attorney and want some more.

Steins;Gate Elite

Another classic and often-recommended visual novel, Steins;Gate is the story of an amateur scientist who accidentally discovers a method for time manipulation. Obviously, this leads to some complications. Different branches and alterations get messy, and Rintaro O??kabe has to try and figure out a way to fix everything.

The Elite version packs in animations from the also popular anime adaptation, which is good; I really like the art of Steins;Gate, but the last time I w??ent back to it, the early hours wore on a bit. With a little bit of polish and an ideal form factor, it's much easier to see why this made such an impact.

Paranormasight

As one of my favorite visual novels on the Switch, Paranormasight is a haunting meta-narrative about several people gathered in the Sumida Ward of Tokyo, Japan. They all have reasons for being there, mostly centered aro?und the Rite of Resurrection; a promise that, if they indulge in some cursed entanglements, they?? can bring someone back to life.

Things don't go so neatly, however. While "horror VN" might lead you to think this is all about the scares (and there are some good ones, to be clear), this is really a good get for those who like the meta-narrative twists of games like NieR: Automata or Undertale. Square Enix's VN is a sleeper gem with some serious legacy behind it.

AI: The Somnium Files / Nirvana Initiative

The Zero Escape series has, sadly, still not made it over to the Nintendo Switch. We do have another series from writer Kotaro Uchikoshi, though: AI: The Somnium Files.

The Somnium Files follows Date, an investigator for a special crime unit that's able to brain-dive into people's memories to elicit information. The first is good, but the follow-up Nirvana Initiative is where I felt the series truly hit its stride.

Shifting the focus to two protagonists, the Nirvana Initiative has a lot of that twisting, winding narrative that makes a visual novel great, plus some genuinely intruiging puzzle room concepts. It's standalone, so you can play Nirvana without playing The Somnium Files??, but both are certainly worth your time.

Raging Loop

This is a personal favorite of mine, and one I wish got a bit more chatter, so here we are. Raging Loop sees protagonist Haruaki Fusaishi stuck on the road, lea?ding him to wander into a remote village in rural Japan, Yasumizu.

Here he befriends some locals and gets ready to head back out on his way, when oh no, the mist rolls in, and now he's wrapped up in a y??early ritual of the feast, where a villager becomes the embodiment of a death god and kills another each night until they're found.

Yes, it's a game of Werewolf. But it's a surprisingly well-told story around this classic set-up. A few weird tone issues aside, this is definitely one ??to look into for some further reading.

VA-11 Hall-A

What more do you need to know about VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action than a title and screenshot could suggest? It's a visual nove?l-meets-bartender sim, with an instantly recognizable look.

It's got a UI that would feel at home on the PC-98. It?? packs in heavy anime inspiration, alongside a plethora of goofs and gags. It's got some heart, too. And an absolutely solid soundtrack, to boot. Do you want to serve drinks in a cyberpunk future to a bunch of anime girls?

This is the game you want to play. For more like it, check out the less alcohol-infused Coffee Talk.

The Silver Case 2425

While you might know Goichi Suda for his work on killer7 or No More Heroes, there was a point-and-click adventure that came before it all. The Silver Case 2425 is a collection of The Silver Case series, which combines all the disparate and strange?? element?s you'd be looking for in a Suda game. You'll follow three perspectives to track down the truth behind a series of supposed suicides.

Like the other murder mysteries on here, there are plenty of twists and turns to uncover. But the reason to pick up The Silver Case is not just the story alone, but the vibes. It's got a style and aesthetic that keeps fresh as the story goes along, where I never really felt like I was just reading text, but also taking in an over-stimulus of visuals in the?? best way.

That's what makes it one? of the t??op novels on the Switch.

Famicom Detective Club

This collection of two Famicom Detective Club games is a bit of a historical pick, if nothing else. Nintendo's remakes of the original Famicom mysteries are absolutely gorgeous, paying homage to a series that carve??d the path for many to follow.

It's a two-pack, with The Missing Heir following a rich family's tragedy and The Girl Who Stands Behind digging into the supernatural horror elements. Two distinctly different flavors, but it's a really neat way to see how the medium has evolved, and even how old pieces of it ??still ho?ld up today.

Necrobarista

Another personal favorite of mine, Necrobarista dumps you into the Terminal, a hipster coffee bar that also serves as a segue between life and death. F??or on??e night, the dead are allowed to hang out among the living here, getting some coffee and exploring the meaning of it all.

It's not just the emotional story that really caught me, but the way it's ?told. Route 59's approach takes as much from film and anime as it does from visual novels, using text as a visual and framing the camera as conversations bounce around.

It's stylish, m??emorable, and might even mak??e you tear up a bit. Definitely worthy of it's status as one of the Switch's top visual novels.

Collar X Malice

For this Switch visual novel list, I knew I would need to include at least one otome game. For those who don't know, that's a genre that's generally focused on dating cute anime boys. I am, admittedly, not a knowledgeable connoisseur of these games, so I turned to the internet's experts for guidance, and one game kept popping up: Collar x Malice.

You play as a young police officer who, after an attack, has a venomous collar attached to their nec?k. Your best?? chances, it seems, rest with five different hot cops who can help you figure out what's happening.

I know this list has been a bit crime-and-mystery heavy, but I like the premise here, and the art looks great too. This seems like an obvious get if you're into the boy-dating subgenre with a s?olid narrative hook.

CLANNAD

I was honestly a bit torn on this one, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention CLANNAD. It's arguably one? of the most recognizable stories from developer Key, following third-year high school student Okazaki Tomoya, dealing with the direction his life has taken, and meeting a variety of anime girls along the way.

It's a love story, but with a lot of heart, and everyone who's made it to the end usually ha??s good things to say about it. I have not, as the writing has always just worn on me.

You can't ignore CLANNAD's historical importance though, and I think if you want an easy-going, slice-of-life story with some gut-punches as it goes further in, CLANNAD and its side stories may be worth your time investment.

Witch on the Holy Night

Speaking of genre pillars, writer Kinoko Nasu's Fate, Tsukihime, and other related works are absolutely massive. These works, undoubtedly brilliant, have given rise to plenty of spin-offs and related games.

One of these, and one deserving of its place as a fantastic Switch visual novel, is Witch on the Holy Night. The well-received story that takes place within the broader Nasu-verse. I'm only a little ways in at the?? time of writing, but so far, it has ev?erything you'd want from this particular subset; absolutely gorgeous visuals and lots of magical fighting.

Witch on the Holy Night is solid on art alone, but the writing also looks to put it as a solid recommendation for anyo??ne wanting a little more action in their Switch visual novels.

If Found

For the (literally) more Annapurna take on the genre, let's turn to If Found. This tale follows two stories. ?In one, astronaut-??scientist Cassiopeia heads to Planet X, only to find a black hole that will soon destroy Earth. Back on Earth in the journal portion, we follow Kasio, a transgender woman who's just finished her Master's degree and is headed back home to Achill Island, Ireland.

It's not an emotionally easy read, as it's got some real heart-rending moments and a tense final act, along with lots of family drama. But if you're down to explore that narrative territory, I think you'll find something quite special in the pages of If Found.

Gnosia

Okay, this is where I twist my rules a bit. Gnosia is, arguably, more of an RPG or management game than a "proper" visual novel. But after some internal discussion, we felt it passed the VN vibe check. And also, it'??s a particular favorite of mine.

Gnosia is, like Raging Loop, framed around a Werewolf-style social deduction game. But rather than a narrative framing for a traditional VN-style story, it plays out in story segments, as you literally fight debate battles each day? to determine who is the intruding Gnosia on board the ship.

From gorgeous art to an underrated soundtrack, to some highly memorable characters that endear themselves to you ??through text and their individual debate quirks, this is one for folks who want a heavier helping of buttons to push and game to play amid their visual novel reading.

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus

Okay, I know at least a few people scrolled pretty far down this list wondering, "where's DDLC?" Yes, Doki Doki Literature Club is on here. Yes, it's worth reading. It's got some neat twists and feels like a good representation ??of what the medium can do with its framing devices.

It's also neat that this visual novel got put on Switch and other consoles, considering all the hijinks happening that, to me, felt best suited to PC. That said, there are caveats. I do think Doki Doki Literature Club relies heavily on its surprises, so don't read up too much on it, unless you feel you need a ??content warning; in that case, please do look for that online.

I also wouldn't recommend anyone play this a?s their first VN. That's just my personal recomm?endation, but I definitely think it's better to have some familiarity with the format going in.

We Know The Devil

Three teens named Neptune, Jupiter, and Venus are at summer camp, and they have one task left ahead of them. They have to spend 12 hours in a cabin in the woods, waiting for the devil. Will they live or die? Well, that might just depend ?on what you d?o.

We Know The Devil is a short, interesting game that could probably fill just one evening, but leave you thinking about it for a while. It's also priced at $6.66. Very good. Sadly, Pillow Fight and Worst Girls Games' also excellent VN Heaven Will Be Mine is not on S??witch, but do seek it out if you enjoy this eerie night in the woods.

Perfect Gold

Let's close the list of Nintendo Switch visual novels off with a selection from our own Zoey Handley. This romance VN is all about two people falling in love while figuring themselves out, ??and while it's not heavily choice-driven, it does have multiple endings.

This story about two mages learning their crafts, while also sneaking out of detention to attend the local Sunflower Festival, seems like a good time for those who want a little ?love in their virtual life.

And that's where this list of the best visual novels you can find on the Switch. There are many more to cho??ose from, and some I wish I could've included on this list, so don't let your visual novel journey end here.

Consider this your introduction, and?? the rest i?s up to you!

If you’re a fan of the more frustrating side of Mario gaming, then one game that you’ve likely dived into at least once is Mario Golf. Originally released on Nintendo 64 back in 1999, it’s also available on Nintendo Switch as long as you have the right? subscriptions.

You’ll need a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online that includes the Expansion Pack content, which comes in a $49.99 for a years subscription per individual, or $79.99 for a family of up to 8 gamers. If you’ve got that, you can once again dive into the incredibly annoying yet enjoyable game that is Mario Golf.

Whether you’re playing on a Nintendo Switch, or going old-sch??ool and playing on your classic N64, you’ll be happy to know that there are a few cheats and secrets that can be accessed. Of course, you could play the game the “rightway, but that does come with the issue of having to actually win, which is easier said than done in this case.

There’s only one cheat that works for Mario Golf on the Nintendo Switch, but you’ll be happy to know that it’s the “almost everythingâ€?cheat. Usually, you’d need to take on each charac??ter one-on-on (and actually win) to be able to play as them, but this cheat unlocks most of the possible player characters in the game, as well as most o??f the courses.

It’s worth noting that this cheat will not unlock the four Transfer Pak characters,?? or the Mario’s Star course. Other than that, you’ll unlock every character and course by pressing the following buttons:

D-pad

  • Down, Down
  • Left, Left, Left
  • Right, Right, Right

C buttons

  • C-Down, C-Down (ZR + B x2)
  • C-Left, C-Left, C-Left (ZR + Y x2)
  • C-Right, C-Right, C-Right (ZR + A x3)

While the Nintendo Switch doesn’t have designated C-Buttons, you can use the X, Y, A, and B buttons while holding down ZR in order to effectively turn them into the needed directional C-Buttons. When you’ve input the code correctly, you’ll hear a chime, and have almost everything available to suffer through. Sorry, I mean ?enjoy.

While there aren’t too many cheats that work on Nintendo 64 but not Nintendo Switch, it’s still always good to know all of your options.&n??bsp;

“Almost everything/h3>

The “Almost everythingâ€?cheat has always worked on the Nintendo 64, arguably better because you don’t have the hassle of trying to convert Switch buttons into N64 C-buttons. To use this Mario Golf cheat on Nintendo 64, just use the same code laid out in the p??revio?us section.

Promotional Tournament Passwords

If you have the North American version of Mario Golf, then you have access to three cheat codes that will unlock new tournament courses. To get to the screen where you can input the c??odes, you’ll need to follow the following instructions:

  1. Highlight “Clubhouse/li>

  2. Hold down Z and R, and press A on the N64 controller
  3. Enter one of the codes below into the “Code Entrymenu

Course Password
1st Camp Hyrule Cup: Shy Guy Desert 0EQ561G2
1st NP Mario Cup: Shy Guy Desert KPXWN9N3
2nd Camp Hyrule Cup: Koopa Park 5VW689O6

Note that even though a couple of these course are called “Camp Hyruleâ€?they aren’t Zelda inspired courses. Camp?? Hyrule was a forum that graced the internet with its presence back in the 1990s, and this is where the cod??es were given out, hence the name.

Okay so these aren’t what you could label cheats, but there are a few little secrets hidden around the Nintendo 64 version of Mario Golf, and th??ey’ve carried over to the game on Nintendo Switch:

Fortnite's Chapter 2 Remix event features plenty of nods to stories of the past. One particularly secret story deserves an appropriately secret set of quests. This guide will help you to hunt down 10 hidden Lawn Gnomes for a hefty chunk of b??attle pass X??P.

War of the Gnomes

Back in the original Chapter 2, eagle-eyed players noticed certain props moving around the island between updates. Through the chapter, a story was told about a confrontation between the Lawn Gnomes and the Teddy Be??ars. Unlik??e most games, however, it wasn't told through cinematics or audio logs. It was told through the incremental changes made to props between updates.

Eventually, the war was won by the Teddy Bears, and the Gnomes were exiled from the island. However, they've been periodically spotted by players every now and again. With Chapter 2 Remix here, we thought perhaps we'd relive the early days of that fated wa??r. Instead, it appears that the Gnomes and Teddy Bears now get along! They're hanging out in locations throughout the island, ready to hand over chunks of battle pass XP to players who find them.

Gnome locations in Fortnite Chapter 2 Remix

There? are ten gnomes throughout the island. As you get near them, you'll see an exclamation point icon to help track them down. The?y're hidden away quite sneakily, so this map will help you locate them all.

  • Under a pylon from the power lines that run from Steamy Stacks to Retail Row
  • Hanging on the shore of a river bend southeast of Frenzy Farm
  • Watching TV inside a white house in Holly Hedges
  • Playing Hide and Seek under a tree with a nearby Teddy Bear east of Holly Hedges
  • Hanging out in Weeping Woods
  • Standing next to a waterfall, reachable by dropping from the top or plunger-gun

Throughout the years, particularly in 2023 and 2024, we've experienced some of the best (and worst) gaming has to offer, from role-playing games that set the standard for years to come to small indie titles that lay comfortably in our hearts and tug at the heartstrings. The Mario & Luigi series wasn’t in the best state following AlphaDream’s closure. The last actually new title was Paper Jam in 2015, followed by two remakes. I?t was a rough fin?al chapter in the studio’s life.

Paper Jam was the worst reviewed in the series (to be fair, Laura Kate Dale, writing for Destructoid, gave it an 8 out of 10). The second remake, Mario ?& Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, was the worst-selling to the point where it was a possible contributing factor to Alphadream's bankruptcy.

Thankfully, the series lives on with Mario & Luigi: Brothership. Being one of the successor series to Super Mario RPG with a unique focus on the two title characters, I feel it has a lot of merit. Brothership demonstrates that but falls way s??hort of its potential.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership (Switch)
Developer: Acquire

Publisher: Nintendo
Released: November 7, 2024
MSRP: $59.99

Brothership is one of the more mundane premises in the series. Following digestion, dreams, and a crossover, this one simply?? has the two brothers transported to another world in need of saving. The central hook is that they find themselves in command of a ship-like floating island and need to travel the expansive ocean to visit other islands and link them together. It’s a mix of unique and trite.

The hapless world is Concordia. It was once ?a continent held together by the Uni-Tree, but someone came along and destroyed their unifying flora. The continent broke apart, with the pieces cast in all directions. The once united populace now struggles in iso??lation, and it’s up to Mario and Luigi to bring everyone back together. In a way, it’s the most obnoxiously overt allegory, but it still manages to hit narrative paydirt occasionally.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Mario & Luigi series, they’re RPGs that focus on the eponymous duo. Alongside Paper Mario, it’s a follow-up to Super Mario RPG on the SNES, which is to say it’s something of a JRPG-lite. It’s turn-based, like what you’d expect, but it ties in reflex-based actions wherein you can press a button at the right time during an animation to defend yourself or make your attacks stronger. This was first featured in Mario RPG, and Mario & Luigi extrapolates on this to the extreme.

//youtu.be/zyhWkdZGh00?feature=shared

Battles generally involve the two brothers assisting each other in combat, w?ith even basic attacks having them help each other. Hammer and jump attacks are pretty straightforward, but then you get to Bros. Attacks, which have much more variety. In order to get the most out of a Bros. Attack, you have to master their associated mini-games which often challenge reflex, perception, and your ability to remember which brother is assigned to which button.

As for new features, a big one is “Luigi Logic. This has Luigi thinking really hard about a situation and coming up with a solu?tion. This is really funny because sometimes the solutions are just impulsive and rely on nothing more than brute force and determination, which suggests that Mario is just not capable of thought. But mostly, it’s just the pride on Luigi's face when he figures something out that really drills in the charm. Dude’s just so damned pleased with himself, it’s infectious.

The Luigi Logic moments often show up in boss battles, giving you a chance to ??do a lot of damage and sometimes stun the boss. They allow for some setpiece moments to crop up that really affect the battle, and some of them are pretty cool??, even if they are usually cropped up at the worst times for me.

The dynamic battle system makes the Mario & Luigi games feel distinct next to their more typical genre kin, but it does have the downside of forcing you through the same mini-games repeatedly as you proceed through battle after battle. The repetition could be mitigated by keeping gameplay brief and offering palate-cleansing sections between more battle-heavy dungeons; it’s just too bad Brothership doesn’t do that.

No, not at all. When I finally wrapped up Brothership?, it was a??round the 42-hour mark, and at that point, I was just done with it, which isn’t totally uncommon for me with longer RPGs, to be fair. But Brothership not only suffers from the repetition of its battles but also from an inconsistent and bloated pace.

There are five sections to the game, and it starts off well enough. You hop from island to island, and they stay rather small affairs, giving you a taste of variety without getting bogged down. Then, Brothership sags through the second and third areas. It’s a protracted stretch that could have been significantly abbreviated. Nothing much happens narratively. Nothing that couldn’t have just been wrapped in as a sub-plot to another section. Honestly, I probably would have puttered out and lost interest in this part of Brothership if I wasn’t playing it for review.

Things pick up in the fourth part of the game and continue into the fifth, with some of the best moments happening during this time, but then it doesn’t know when to stop. You can’t maintain a clima??x for, like, 10 hours. Excitement doesn’t last that long. A narrative shouldn’t peak and then plateau, because then it becomes dull. The punch loses impact. If I had managed to survive the previous lull, I most likely wouldn’t have made it through the denouement, but I had to power through? it.

Brothership is such an inconsistent game. It can be extremely witty one moment, then clueless the next. At some points, it skirts with something profound in its narrative, then refuses to deliver. There are so many places in this game that could have been cut down or abbreviated, but a lot of it feels there just as a?? way of extending the game. It doesn’t feel rushed or unpolished; there’s just too much of it, and it gets in its own way.

And it’s a shame, because there’s a lot of charm that does a lot to keep the experience. It’s focus on connections and bonds works well with Luigi and his broth?er. There is so much fraternal devotion on display in every moment, it’s almost enviable. They are presented in such a way that their coordinated outfits begin to make sense.

It’s expressed so well with its art style and lavish animations. Brothership is a great-looking game, even without a?? lot of graphical horsepower and trickery. It bursts with personality and gives so much depth to a pair of mute palette swaps. It’s just too bad that so much of the rest of the cast feels trite. The villains are villainous, the henchmen hench well, and, as usual, the support character evokes my visceral rage. On the bright side, it means the brothers shine brighter.

Mario and Luigi Brothership gameplay in town.
Screenshot by Destructoid

When all is said and done, Mario & Luigi: Brothership isn’t a bad game; it’s just too much of a decent thing. If it had restraint and its pacing was planned better, it could have been the best in the series. Its transition from a strictly handheld platform to consoles? is a great one, putting the additional horsepower to good use.

But because it was allowed to grow so long, what would have been easily overlooked inconsistencies become major annoyances. Eventually, all of its problems start to overshadow its successes and they begin to fester. What would be a joyful experience gets washed away in a sea of grey le??aving nothing to connect with.

As if Scissorman wasn't terrifying enough, an even bigger threat awaits Jennifer in the caves beneath Barrows Mansion. Confronting this creature and reaching the caves will take a lot of preparation. Here's how to get ending F and E in Clock Tower: Rewind.

How to get the perfume

Jennifer standing near the dresser in the bedroom containing perfume.
Screenshot by Destructoid

For this ending, you need several items ??that can spawn in multiple places throughout the Barrows Mansion. The first thing you'll want to grab is the Perfume.

At the start, head left and keep going past the room with the window. In the next room, g?o through the door closest to you. Interact with the box on top of the?? dresser in this room for the West Building Key.

If the West Building Key is not in this room, it will appear later in the hallway near the attic. For now, head into ?the door in the right corner of the room. In the bedroom, check the dresser under the mirror to get the Perfume.

You'll also want to take care of the Parrot in this room like you would when pursuing ending G or H. Open the cage and let the bird out, then interact with the red bed sheets to catch the bird. Now you can hide from Scissorman under the left bed without the Parrot exposin??g you to the killer.

How to get the black robe

Jennifer pushing a box towards a shelf in the attic.
Screenshot by Destructoid

Exit the bedroom through the door to the right, then go left. When you run into Scissorman, run?? back into the bedroom and hide under the bed on the left side of the room. Return to the room where you encountered Scissorman and head up the stairs.

At the top of the stairs, go left until you reach two brown doors. Go into the door on the left, and t??hen ?enter the empty doorway in this hall.

In this room, interact with the cans near the door to get t??he Pesticide. Next, interact with the box behind the blue shelf on the left side of the room. Jennifer will try to climb up the shelf, but she won't be able to.

Now, interact with the box in the center of the room. J??ennifer will u?se the box to help her get over the shelf and reach the other side. Interact with the box behind the shelf again to get the Black Robe.

Leave this room and go back into the hallwa??y. If you didn't find the West Building Key earlier, you can find it by heading?? to the left of this hall.

Interact with the bird nest near the ceiling here, then interact with the box in ??the hall and Jennifer will use it to reach the nest. Inside the nest you'll ??find the West Building Key.

How to get the gold and silver keys

Jennifer in the room with a suit of armor and a silver key on the table.
Screenshot by Destructoid

Next, head back to the first floor of the room where you encountered Scissorman. Go left until you see two brown doors. Enter the brown door on the left side, which you'll enter automatically if you're r?unning left.

In the hallw??ay, enter the first door you see to enter the kitchen. Here, use the Pesticide on the giant freezer in the back of the room. The Pesticide will clear out all the bugs, allowing you to safely obtain the Gold Key.

Befor??e you leave, grab the Ham from the fridge on the left side of the room. After that, head back to the Scissorman room and go to the second floor. Yo??u need to find a room with a suit of armor in it, but this room's location is randomized.

The door to the room with armor can be in one of two places. Both of these doors are found in the room where S?cissorman at??tacked Ann.

The first door is found on the firs??t floor on the left side of the room. When you reach the two brown doors, enter the door on the right.

The second door is found on the second floor, again on the left side of the room. When you reach the two brown doors here, enter the one on the right once more. You'll know it's the right door when Jennifer automatically uses the G??old Key to enter the room.

Another element of the room with armor that's randomized is whether or not Mary will app??ear in the room. If Mary appears in the room, you either want to reset or use the handy Rewind feature to back out of the room and try again. Keep trying until Mary is no longer in the room, otherwise she will drug Jennifer and lock her in a cage.

Once the room with? armor is emp?ty, interact with the suit of armor. Next, interact with the glass on the table to get the Silver Key.

How to get the ritual key

Jennifer turning towards a toy that's sprung to life in the room with a crib.
Screenshot by Destructoid

Return to the first floor of the Scissorman room and enter the door on the back wall near t?he stairs. Continue through this hallway, and you'll reach the West Building. You'll know you're in the West Wing because the walls here are all purple.

The worst thi??ng about the West Building is that the locations of most rooms are completely randomized on each playthrough. So now you need to enter every room you come across to get a few key items.

One item, the Ritual Key?, can be found in the dark room with a crib. This room is one of the ??few that remains consistent in where it's placed.

You can typically find the room with the crib on the second floor of the West Building. The room with the crib is in a hallway with three doors all?? evenly spaced apart. You want to enter the room in the middle to get to the room with the crib.

Interact w??ith the doll sitting on the box near the door to get the Ritual Key. Once the key is collected, the doll will spring to life and attack. Mash the Panic button and Jennifer will destroy the doll, allowing you to safely escape the room.

How to get the staff and statue

Jennifer appraoching a green statue in the West Building.
Screenshot by Destructoid

It's?? randomized whether you'll need the Staff or the Statue to continue down this route. Start by trying to find the library in the West Building. Once there, interact with the bookshelves unt??il Jennifer notices a piece of paper describing the Statue's location.

If you find a piece of paper, head up to the second floor of the West Building. Go right and keep going un??til you find a hole in the floor preventing you from ??going further. Interact with the hole in the floor, then interact with the nearby wooden plank for Jennifer to use it as a bridge.

Continue right until you reach the green statues in the ?hallway. Interact with each of the gre??en statues and eventually you'll obtain the Statue item.

If you didn??'t find a piece of paper, you need the Staff from a room with a piano. In the piano room, interact with the curtain on the left side of the room to get the staff. If you actually need the Statue, Scissorman will jump out from the curtain instead.

How to get to the cave

Jennifer in the Ritual Room near a giant pentagram.
Screenshot by Destructoid

With the Ritual Key and either the Statue or Staff in hand, you're ready to open up entry to the cave. The Ritual room is another room that remains consistent in where it spawns. You can find the Ritual room on the first floor of the West Bu?ilding.

Like the room with the crib, the Ritual room is in a hal??lway with three evenly spaced doors. Enter the door in the middle to get ??to the Ritual room. You'll know you're in the right place if there's a giant pentagram on the floor.

If you have the statue, use it on the go??ld cup on the shelf near the candles. If you have the staff, use it on the green flower vase on the right side of the room.

Once this is done a hole will open up in the center of the room. Hop on down and yo??u'll enter the cave.

How to get ending E and F

Scissorman dropping in on Jennifer from the top of the elevator.
Screenshot by Destructoid

In the caves, keep running right until you reach the dog. Get close??r and closer to the dog, then stop once you can interact with Jennifer. Use the Perfume and Black Robe on Jennifer to sneak past the dog.

What you do here decides whether or not you get ending E or F. If you want Ending E, keep running to the right?? until you find Lotte. After that, run back to the dog and enter the cave between the lit candles.

If you want ending F, enter the cave between the two lit cand??les without discovering Lotte's body. Whatever ending you get solely depends on wh??ether or not you find Lotte.

After you enter the cave near the dog, continue ?running to the right until you reach a room with giant red curtains. Interact with the curtains, then run for your life when the creature attacks. Jennifer will run automatically, but you need to mash the Panic button when Jennifer tries to climb up a hill and escape.

Once you rega?in contr?ol of Jennifer, enter the cave in the back between the lit candles. Run straight to the right here and interact with the elevator switch. The elevator won't respond, so you'll need to go back the way you came.

Go back to the hill where you narrowly escaped the creature. Interact with the device to the left of the gray table, the one with the green light. This will power up? the elevator and allow it to be used.

Run back to the elevator and interact with the switch to get inside. If you're going for ending F, you'll get the ending simply by entering the elevator. If you're going for ending E, select the third floor from the options once you'r??e inside the elevator and enjoy the ride.

As the night goes on and more of Jennifer's friends are taken by malevolent forces, the odds of surviving the night are near zero. Luckily, there's a car in the garage that can be used to escape the nightmare. Here's how to get ending H and ending G in Clock Tower: Rewind.

How to get ending H

Jennifer in the garage near the car and box containing the car keys.

Once you gain control of Jennifer, go left and keep going past the room with the window. Once you enter ??the room with the three doors, enter the door in the middle.

In the bedroom, interact with the bird cage to let th??e parrot free. Once the bird is free, it will start attac??king and shouting at you. Interact with the red bed sheets to capture and silence the bird.

After that, exit t??he bedroom and continue heading left. Once you encounter Scissorman, run back to the bedroom and hide under the left bed. If you don't deal with the parrot before hiding, the bird will expose your hiding spot to Scissorman, forcing you to run.

Once Scissorman has left the room, go back to the room where you first encountered Scissorman. In this room, continue h?eading left past ??the stairs. Continue heading left until you reach the garage with the car.

Interact with the box behind the car to get the Car Key. Use the Car Key on the car three times a?nd Jennifer will muster up the courage to drive away from the mansion.

How to get ending G

Laura's body stuffed into a knight's suit of armor on the floor.

Getting ending G require?s the same setup as ending H. Head to the left, take care of the parrot in the bedroom, encounter Scissorman near the staircase, and hide under the bed to evade the killer. When Scissorman leaves the bedroom, you can begin pursuing ending G.

Exit the? bedroom and return to the room wh??ere you encountered Scissorman. In this room, head up the stairs and go left until you reach the end of the hall. When you reach the two brown doors, enter the door on the left.

In this room, enter the nearby doorway to another roo??m. As soon as you enter the room, pick up the Pesticide near Jennifer's feet. Now, go back to the stairs and head to the firs?t floor.

Once you're on the first floor, head left and enter the brown door??. In this hallway, enter the first door you find to reach the kitchen.

In the kitchen, use the Pesticide on the fridge in the left corner of the room. The Pesticide will clear out all the bugs in the fridge, allowing yo?u to obtain the G??old Key.

Once you exit the Kitchen, Scissorman will appear. You can escape the chase by returning to the bedroom and hiding under the bed? onc??e again.

After escaping Scissorman, head back to the room with the stairs and go to the second floor??. At the top of the stairs and go left, back to the two brown doors. This time, enter the brown door on the right to use the Gold Key a?nd enter the room.

Interact with the suit of armor in the left corner of the room. After discovering Laura's body, return to the first floor and go left. Run past the ki?tchen and ?continue left until you reach the garage with the car.

Interact with the box behind the car ??to get the Car Key. Use the key o?n the car three times and Jennifer will drive away.

An easy guide to gathering the Poké-squad together

One of the big draws for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is the multiplayer. Players can hang out together, fight fearsome Tera Raid battles, or just vibe at a picnic. And the Union Circle is how Pokémon Scarlet and Violet make it all happen.

The Union Circle is the multiplayer hub for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. It specifically lets players either joi??n each other's groups or form ones of their own.

It's easy enough ??to set up and use, and we'll also walk you through some common pitfalls we ran into while playing multiplayer ourselves.

How to use the Union Circle in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

The Union Circle is accessible through both the Pokémon Centers dotted around the map or through your in-game Poké Portal. I've usually opted to go for the physical monitors on the sides of the Centers since you can fast-travel to one and there are a decent number. Just look for the big yellow circle and monitor, and hit the A button to access it.

[caption id="attachment_350910" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

Once inside, you'll see a menu. From here, you can either make a group to invite others to or join another group. Making a group will give you a code made up of let?ter??s and numbers to share with friends.

To get the party going, just have them punch it in on their end and connect. Once everyone is in, you can start it up. From here, you'll be in a shared instance of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, able to explore together.

Some tips for setting up multiplayer

First off, make sure you're connected to the internet. The L button is used to connect yourself to the net, and you'll need to be in Online Mode to invite others over from further out than?? your living room.

Secondly, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet multiplayer is not drop-in, drop-out. If someone disconnects, you'll n??eed to make a new group to link it all back. Disconnections won't automatically close the party unless it's the host, though.

[caption id="attachment_626147" align="alignnone" width="640"]Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Union Circle Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

What can you do in the Union Circle in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?

Exploring together literally means you can go out in the wild, catch Pokémon with friends, trade, and battle. You can't play the game coope?ratively, but you can he??lp each other out and create a more personalized experience.

If you and your friend(s) have different versions of the ninth-generation game (Scarlet or Violet) and join a Union Circle, you can ??catch the other version's e?xclusive wild Pokémon. This will only work if you are within the vicinity of your friend with a different version. You can't be in two totally different regions of Paldea.

It'll also be a lot easier to link up and take on all the different Tera Raid battles since you're already in a pre-made group. Players will h??ave their own separate crystals. You'll simply have?? to coordinate these since invites are only sent out if all players are not currently in a cutscene or battle.

[caption id="attachment_626148" align="alignnone" width="640"]Pokemon Scarlet and Violet multiplayer raid Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

You can also do picnic??s and partake in outbreaks to increase your chances of encountering shinies out in the wild. The benefits are shared between players, so you can have someone there to help out or pitch in to find these super rare Pokémon.

Lastly, you can help your friend(s) locate certain i?tems in-game or help physically guide them in finding certain things??. You won't share drops, but this can help newer players get up to speed!

If you do have friends who play or want to play Pokémon Scarlet or Violet, join up with them in a Union Circle to have a better ?overall experience. Experiences may vary based on internet quality from all parties.

After being separated from Amy, Vivian is all on her own to face the supernatural. There's a payphone Vivian can use to call for help, but it's locked behind a door attached to a giant golden statue. Here's how you can open the statue door in Fear the Spotlight.

How to get the screwdriver

After performing the seance with Amy, you'll be led to an aban?doned school. Once you make your way down the hall, you'll ??find a door blocked by a golden statue holding out its hands.

From the statue door, head rig??ht and enter the double doors. In this new area, take a right at the door with the keycard reader and head around the corner from the vending machine. Here, you'll find a ?keycard inside the duffel bag on the bench.

Take the Office?? Keycard back to the door with the keycard reader and use the item to unlock the door. In this room, take a ?left and head towards the toolbox on the desk. The code for the toolbox is 001. You'll only be able to take the screwdriver since the pliers are broken.

Use the screwdriver on the vent behind the toolbox, near the brown cabinets. Follow the path and head into the boys' locker room. In ?the locker room??, head straight to the end of the hall, then crouch through the hole in the wall on the left.

How to get the welding glue

Use the screwdriver here to open the drain on the floor and obtain the two quarters. Once you make your way to the exit, a?n enemy will appear. Use the lockers to hide from the enemy's spotlight, then make a break for the exit once it's safe.

Head back to the area with the duffel bag where you obtained the Office Keycard. Use a quarter on the vending machine here and enter the code B34 to get the Welding Glue. Go back to the toolbox in the offi??ce and use the Welding Glue to fix and obtain the pliers.

Go to the room with the vending machine, then take a left to reach a small patch of d?irt near the lockers. Interact with the patch of dirt and click on the dirt to dig out the metal rose. Once the golden hands are exposed, use the pliers to pry ope?n the fingers and get the rose.

Take the metal rose back to the statue door and put the rose in the statue's hands. After getting past this door, put a quarter in the payphone to give Amy a call. You can call her with the numb?er 555-0199.

Poached Basil Butter Sturgeon in Disney Dreamlight Valley is a fancy seafood dish that?? can impress your fellow villagers like Mulan and Belle, among others. You'll need four ingredients throughout the game to make this gastronomic spectacle.

All Poached Basil Butter Sturgeon Disney Dreamlight Valley ingredients

To make this four-star dish, you'l?l require the following ingredients:

  • White Sturgeon
  • Butter
  • Basil
  • Lemon

White Sturgeon can be found within the waters of the Frosted Heights. Get your fishing rod and get the valuable fish for your dish. They're from orange ripples in the water; I found them very quickly in my experience. Butter is an easy ingredient to find as it's sold in Chez Remy after finishing the Ratatouille realm's missions in the Castle.

Basil, which can also be used for cooking Creamy Soup, is picked up from the ground in Peaceful Meadow. Look for its green leaves and you should find the herb fairly easily. Lastly Lemons can be grabbed from trees within the Forest of Valor and Glade of Trust. All of these ingredients are pretty easy to get, so you should be able to gather them and cook them at any stove around your house or Chez Remy easily. You'll now have the fancy four-star dish to give, eat, or sell in Disney Dreamlight Valley.

How much is this dish worth?

You can sell the Poached Basil Butter Sturgeon for 2,284 Star Coins at Goofy's Stall and you can eat the meal for 4,961 Energy. If you sell it, it will account towards your Dreamlight tasks?? a??nd goals.

Creamy Soup in Disney Dreamlight Valley is a delicious four-star dish you can make for v?illagers like?? Stitch and Mulan if they request it. It can also expand your cooking repertoire and help you get Dreamlight from completing duties.

Where to find Creamy Soup Disney Dreamlight Valley ingredients

For this four-star dish, you'll need four different ingredients. The Creamy Soup Disney Dreamlight Valley recipe requires:

  • Potato
  • Milk
  • Any vegetable (Mushrooms, Carrots, etc)
  • Any herb (Basil, Oregano, etc)

Potatoes can be purchased from Goofy's Stall in the Forgotten Lands. The seeds cost 55 Star Coins. The vegetable itself may also be available. Unfortunately, I wasn't that lucky. It will take 35 minutes to plant the Potatoes in the ground and water them. You'll need to water this ingredient twice before it g??rows. Another way to get Potatoes is through Wall-E's vegetable patch, but o?nce again, it's down to luck.

Milk is easily purchased at Chez Remy after finishing the Ratatouille realm at the castle. You'll bring Remy and his restaurant over to the v??alley as a result. Go to the kitchen and buy Milk for 230 Star Coins behind the stove.

You can pick up vegetables from Wall-E's patch if you have it available. Carrot seeds can be bought fr??om Goofy's Stall in the Peaceful? Meadow. Mushrooms can be picked up from the ground in the Glade of Trust.

Herbs are easy to find in Disney Dreamlight Valley. Go around the main plaza and find some green leaves poking up from the ground. Pick them up and you'll discover Oregano. Mix all four of these ingredients together a??t any stove, and you should get Creamy Soup for your efforts.

How much can you make from Creamy Soup?

Creamy Soup can be sold for 654 Star Coins at any of Goofy's Stalls. Selling meals a??lso gives you a chance to get Dreamlight points for your?? Duties.

One of the funniest scenes in The Emperor's New Groove involves Kronk's Spinach Puffs, which has Yzma's minion joyfully cooking for the emperor and her. Even though he's not in the game, you can make Kronk's Spinach Puffs in Disney Dreamlight Valley.

Kronk's Spinach Puffs Disney Dreamlight Valley recipe

Kronk's Spinach Puffs can be created with the foll??owing ingredients:

  • Spinach
  • Canola
  • Cheese

Spinach seeds can be bought from Goofy's Stall in the Glade of Trust, while Canola seeds is purchased at Goofy's Stall in the Forest of Valor. Spinach seeds are 45 Star Coins and Canola seeds are 25 Star Coins. They're thankfully cheap to buy, unlike Pumpkin seeds and the ingredient itself.

You might ??be l??ucky and find both of the ingredients at Goofy's Stall after they've been grown. This seems to be random, however. If you're lucky, Spinach costs 62 Star Coins, while Canola sets you back 164 Star Coins.

Lastly, Cheese can be bought from Chez Remy for 180 Star Coins. You'll need to complete the Ratatouille realm and invite Remy to your valley to find this ingre??dient.

Once you've created Kronk's Spinach Puffs in Disney Dreamlight Valley, you can sell it fo?r 461 St??ar Coins or eat it for 750 Energy.

Another recipe you can make with Cheese

You can also make Bell Pepper Puffs with Cheese alongside a few other ingredients??. You'll need:

  • Bell Pepper
  • Cheese
  • Eggs

The Eggs and?? Cheese can be purchased at Chez Remy. The Bell Pepper (and its seeds) is purchased from Goofy's Stall at the Forest of Valor, just like the Can??ola.

I’ve been playing the Mario Party series since it started in 1998. My mother and I used to play the s??tick-rotation mini-games with the palms of our hands. We both got blisters. We tried to call a tru??ce and outlaw the practice, but in the heat of competition, someone would break, and it would be back to blister-city.

The series is something I can play with my parents and family. Because Mario Party is 80% luck, 15% cruelty, and 5% skill, winning isn’t a foregone conclusion for me. Even with my decades of extensive experience, my victory isn’t guaranteed, so it’s more fun for everyone. I may never be able to pay my parents back for my upbri??nging, but I will not hesitate to rip a star from their grasp.

The series has had its ups and downs. Even if we could glean fun from any entry you can name, some are more beloved than others. Super Mario Party, we weren’t too hot on. It had four boards, and you hit the bottom of it way too soon. I always hoped we’d get DLC for Mario Party Superstars, and was a bit disappointed when Super Mario Party Jamboree was announced. My skepticism was unwarranted: this is the best Mario Party has ever been.

Super Mario Party Jamboree (Switch [Reviewed])
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Released: October 17, 2024
MSRP: $59.99

If you’re not familiar with the Mario Party series, it’s a cross between a board game and a video game. You pick a character from the Mario series, roll dice, and take them around the board.? The ?goal is to gather coins that you can trade for stars and other items and events. The person who ends with the most stars, wins.

When everyone completes their turn, you’re all taken into a short mini-game to compete. These are all very simple, sometimes involving direct competition, whereas others have you collect as many coins as possible. Some spots on the board will also sta??rt mini-games that have players put their coins down in a winner’s pot, and others are duals between two players. Winning mini-games doesn’t guarantee you’ll win, however. It’s all about the stars. If you have 200 coins and no stars, the person who has one star will cinch the win. On the other hand, if two players have the same number of stars, the most coins decide who wins the tie.

To win, you really have to play the board. You have to be locked in on reaching stars before anyone else and take advantage of every opportunity to steal them from others. There are optional bonus stars at the end, rewarding players for sometimes random accomplishments, giving players one last opportunity to steal the game. There are lots of opportunities to screw over other players; Mario Party can be extremely vicious.

//youtu.be/YKR6sdcO4ac?feature=shared

One thing I really want to stress is that this variation of Mario Party doesn’t really follow the deviations made for Super Mario Party. Character-specific dice aren’t included, and it reverts to the 1-10 dice blocks. However, rather than the old standard 20 turns, the default is now 10. You can pick up Jamboree buddies, which we’ll get to, but they’re not quite like the allies you could gain in Super Mario Party. Instead, they only stick with you for three turns and can cause a lot of stuff to trigger twice, s??uch a?s buying a star or even suffering Bowser’s wrath.

Super Mario Party Jamboree feels a lot closer to the original format, which is probably the intention after Superstars. There are board gimmicks, but they don’t entirely overshadow the central formula. If there’s one thing I’m glad they kept, it’s the amount of characters from Super Mario Party. Somewhere north o??f 20. I mean,?? I’m always going to play as Luigi, regardless of who gets added, but it’s nice to have a bigger cast for variety’s sake.

There are also superfluous side modes, like one where you cooperate to fire cannons at Bowser and a few motion controller activities. There’s also a weird story mode where you explore under-construction boards and help w??ith their setup. They’re okay distractions, but I don’t think they’re going to distract from the standard Mario Party mode. That’s fine. I’d probably be upset if it felt like resources had been taken from the board gameplay, but considering how strong it is, the side activities are just a bonus.

Super Mario Party Jamboree You got Ztars...
Screenshot by Destructoid

Speaking of motion controls; they’re optional. That’s not to say that every mini-game can be played without them, but rather that you can just toggle them out of circulation. This ??reduces the pool of games that might come up in any given round, but at least it means that you can play on a Switch Lite or Pro Controller if that’s your preference.

Speaking of “prothere’s a “pro modein Jamboree that should ease things for anyone who hates the luck aspect of Mario Party. What it does is set a number of factors to be more static. For example, there are no hidden blocks that would randomly award somebody a star or coins. When you send out a Boo to rob a player, they always return with 15 coins, but you can still pay them to steal a star. There’s only one bonus star at the end of the game, and its criterion is announced at the beg?inning of the game. There is a limited number of stock at the item stores. A game is als?o locked to 12 rounds.

I’m no doubt forgetting to mention a few rules, but the important takeaway is that it’s a mode for people who want to take things more seriously. As I said, there’s still an aspect of luck when dice rolls are involved, but there’s less to get in the way of any strategizing. It’s a welcome inclusion for anyon?e frustrated by random chance and want their skill to play a more prominent role in their victory.

Super Mario Party Jamboree Monty Mole in an F1 car.
Screenshot by Destructoid

And speaking of skills, if there is one thing that bothers me about Jamboree, it’s the fact that a lot of the Jamboree Buddy games rely on skills that my family can’t match me at. Unlike Super Mario Party, you don’t gain allies simply by landin??g on a designated spot on the board. They appear occasionally, and once you reach them, it begins a mini-game where everyone competes. The victor gets the buddy, regardless of who actually reached them on the board. The person who triggered the mini-game does get an advantage, but it’s not so immense that it’s insurmountable for everyone else. It would be less fun if it was, I suppose.

But the problem is that many of these mini-games are much longer than standard ones and involve reflexes for platforming or rhythm. Not to brag, but my family can’t compete with my expert-level Rock Band skills and Champion’s Road honed platforming. Not in the ?same way that they can in games about cutting a steak pe?rfectly in half. I normally win the most mini-games anyway, even if that doesn’t mean I always win the game, but this feels like I will always have the best chance at companionship.

Understandably, that’s more of a problem in my personal circumstances and isn’t going to bother everyone. Jamboree Buddies don’t completely skew the overall outcome of the game, as they only provide a temporary advantage to a player and can actually wind up hurting more than helping. However, it’s also str??ange that these mini-games are so much longer than standard ones. It feels like everyone gets dragged into them, and the game stalls temporarily. It’s almost disorienting when they happen.

Super Mario Party Jamboree running from a boulder.
Screenshot by Destructoid

Circling back to my personal circumstances, it’s important to note that if my family didn’t play Mario Party with me, Mario Party Jamboree would be effectively worthless. You can play just about everything single-player, but the series is only really exciting if you have someone to play it with. That hasn’t changed with Jamboree. You can play it online, but I feel that somethin?g is lost when you’re not in the same room as the people you’re stealing stars from. Torpedoing someone’s success just isn’t the same when you can’t hear them mope and/or scream.

If you do have a reliable group preferably one who you already play Mario Party games with then Mario Party Jamboree is probably going to be your new go-to. In many of the recent entries, I feel a lot was phoned in. Not enough would be changed, but some aspects would feel weaker or even unwelcome. However, while Jamboree mainly just builds off the original framework, it’s a lot tighter and more rounded than we’ve seen since the N64 days. I’ll admit it can be hard to get excited about yet another Mario Party, but this one is absolutely worth attending.

Warframe 1999 is a unique upcoming update that sort of ties back to the events of Digital Extremes' Dark Sector. Here's everything we know about it, incl??uding when it is slated?? to release.

When is Warframe 1999 going to be released?

While there is no strict date set for the Warframe 1999 update, we do know that it will be coming in Winter 2024, which will highly likely end up being sometime in December. The update is s??lated to be rather beefy thanks to the subject matter, but we'll le?t you know the details once more have been released.

Considered an 'expansion' by the developers, we got a sneak peek of the update during the Whispers in the Walls quest line. During this, players got to go back in time to the age of the very first Tenno, Hayden Tenno, who was, incidentally, the protagonist of Dark Sector. The segment was very ?short but gave a highly impactful preview for whats to come.

What is Warfarme 1999?

Warframe 1999 is an expansive update for Warframe that will contain a story quest relating to Dark Sector protagonist, Hayden Tenno. The '1999' portion relates to the year of the events of this questline, which is a massive jump back in time for players of Warframe.

Unlike the rest of Warframe, Warframe 1999 will feature dark urban streets and 'modern-sci-fi' features over the high-sci elements the rest of the game already offers. Weapons and enemies will also feature a 'modern' sci-fi twist, that is sure to bring a unique experience to Warframe players, long-time and new.

On October 16, all Warframe players will get to try out Warframe 1999 early with a demo that highlights what to expect from the expansion. Participating in the demo will, additionally, earn all players the Protokil Longsword skin as a free additional gift. Simply ??claim ??it from your mailbox once you log in.

To access the demo, players will need to have minimally completed the Awakening and Vor's Prize questlines, which is effectively the game's tutorial. You do not need to have completed Whispers in the Wall or any other questline in Warframe to participate.

If you're looking to play the full version of Warframe 1999 on release, however, there are seve??ral main stor??y quests you need to have completed first and foremost.

  • Vor's Prize
  • Saya's Vigil
  • Vox Solaris
  • Once Awake
  • Heart of Deimos
  • The Archwing
  • Natah
  • The Second Dream
  • Rising Tide
  • The War Within
  • Chains of Harrow
  • Apostasy Prologue
  • The Sacrifice
  • Prelude to War
  • The New War
  • Whispers in the Walls
  • The Lotus Eaters

All of these quests can be accessed in-game via your Codex, and you also check your progress on them. Some may individually require additional prerequisites to begin, but you have time to get these all done before the official release of Warframe 1999.

This Mexican dish, the Vegetarian Taco, in Disney Dreamlight Valley is a wonderful meal that can get you 423 Star Coins at Goofy's Stall. Thankfully, it's fairly easy to make if ??you know where to?? get the ingredients.

Vegetarian Taco Disney Dreamlight Valley ingredients

To ma??ke a delicious Vegetarian Taco, you'll need the follow??ing ingredients:

  • Chili Pepper
  • Cheese
  • Corn
  • Any vegetable like a Carrot or Corn

To get yourself some Cheese, head over to Chez Remy and buy it from the rat. It might not pass safety standards in our world, but you can get the ingredient for 180 Star Coins. You'll need to complete the Ratatouille realm inside the castle to?? gain access to this restaurant and Remy himself.

Corn seeds and the ingredient itself can be bought from Goofy's Stall in Dazzle Beach for 15 Star Coins. Chilli Pepper can be purchased from Goofy's Stall in the?? Sunlit Plateau for 20 Star Coins.

You can buy another Corn to make up for ??the vegetable you need for the fourth ingredient or use something else you're growing like a Carrot.

Once you ha?ve all the ingredients, you can make the Vegetarian Taco by throwing in all the ingredients at a stove from your house or Chez Remy.

Other Cheese dishes you can make

With Cheese in your inventory, you can make Puffs in Disney Dreamlight Valley. For example, you can create Eggplant Puffs by including the Eggplant, Cheese, and Eggs. It's a three-star dish. You can even make Kronk's Spinach Puffs from the movie The Emperor's New Groove.

The Chili Pepper can help you make Spicy Baked Bream too.

Europa is a beautiful indie gem with its illustrious visuals and environmental storytelling. While the gamepla??y might be lacking in some parts, the narrative journey certainly makes up ??for this aspect.

This game tells an emotional story with stellar voice acting from the narrator Earl Fisher, who plays the kid prot??agonist's father. As we continue through the game, we get more information about the lore by picking up notes, and the plot has a great flow with twists and turns towards the end. It also tells an environmental message but it doesn't ??strike at the heart enough to be effective.

Europa (PC [Reviewed], Switch)
Developer:
Helder Pinto, Chozabu (Alex PB), Novadust Entertainment
Publisher: Future Friends Games
Released: October 11, 2024
MSRP:
$14.99

Flying through the air is bliss in Europa. You get a real thrust of power from the jetpack, letting you leap high distances. It controls very well too. You'll be able to get collectible crystals from the top of wrecked buildings in the ??environment and find other secrets around each level with the jetpack.

Most of the game involves you collecting objects like a flicker of light energy or interacting with mechanisms in each area to move forward. They're fairly easy to spot most of the time, but it still feels rewarding to spot everything you requ?ire, especially with the exhilarating flying mechanic.

Fun, yet easy puzzles in Europa

There are some puzzles here and there. There's a fun, albeit easy, puzzle, which has you rotate blocks in a clockwise manner to reach three areas of the map. Additionally, there are platforming challenges that involve blocks disappearing after each second jump. Europa won't challenge you, but they're rewarding to complete just like finding each object in the levels. I'm not usually a fan of puzzles in games, but even I have to admit, it would have been great to have more difficulty in Europa.

//youtu.be/FBhkG9lD11s

One of the weakest parts of Europa is its enemies. They seem thrown in as the main character only gets dazed, not knocked out by his foes. There are tu?rrets that fire projectiles at you but they're fairly easy to dodge. Whenever they do occasionally land a shot, it feels so weird when a huge projectile hits the child and it barely phases him. Some stingrays shock you and do nothing else other than being a mi??ld inconvenience. The enemies are just annoying and ruin the flow of the gameplay. It gets repetitive too and can be quite annoying to get interrupted when you're trying to push an object into the correct place.

While the enemies do get repetitive, the game's environments do manage to change up the formula when you head into a new biome. There's enough added to the mechanics to keep Europa fresh for its 3-4 hour playtime.

A stunning game through and through

The game runs surprisingly smooth, and throughout its 3-4 hour length, Europa didn't have any noticeable bugs, framerate drops, or any other graphical issues. There are big environments with little pop in here and there, and some particle effects hang around the character's jetpack that pop on screen. Europa does something very similar to Journey, in which you can see ?the end goal, the human civilization on a floating island, on almost every level. As you proceed through the story, it gets closer and clos??er, leading you up to the wintry top of the mountain.

Europa is gorgeous. The visuals are bright, the torn architecture and robots that remain from a war years ago stand out, and the artistry of the game's skylines like the Northern Lights-esque night are breathtaking. There are some wonderful set pieces as well like seeing the island of Europa in the distance, flying sections with a colossal robotic creature, and visages of a war gone by. It certainly gives the fantastical vibes to Studio Ghibli's work, especially Castle in the Sky.

Europa is beautiful
Screenshot by Destructoid

While not as compelling as Austin Wintory's Journey soundtrack, Europa has a stirring score to complement the beautiful visuals. The piano-led music leads to how you're supposed to fee??l in the moment, and towards the end, it genuinely gave me goosebumps in my arms.

Europa is a delightful work

Overall, Europa is a wonderful indie title that is a breath of fresh air from the triple-A fare of this busy season. The art style is striking, the storyline is intriguing, and moving around in the sky is satisfying. While the game can be repetitive at times with its annoying enemies (that only stun your character), Europa is worth your time if you want to take your gaming slow for a few?? hours. It is fairly short at 3-4 hours, but there are collectibles you can try to find that can extend your playtime.

Chocolate Waffles in Disney Dreamlight Valley is a four-star dish that can be easy to make as long as you have access to the correc?t biomes for the ingredients. As it's a Disney game, it makes sense that it's in the shape of Mickey Mouse's head just like what the theme parks serve around the world.

Chocolate Waffles Disney Dreamlight Valley ingredients

To create Chocolate Waffles in Disney Dreamlight Valley, you'll need these ingredients:

  • Wheat
  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Cocoa Bean

Most of these ingredients are easy to find. Eggs and Milk can be purchased from Chez Remy after completing the Ratatouille realm in the castle and getting Remy into your valley. They will cost you 450 Star Coins altogether. Wheat seeds can be bought from Goofy's Stall in the Peaceful Meadow for 1 Star?? Coin. You might as well buy the ingredient itself if it's available, however, as it's very slightly more expensive at 2 Sta?r Coins. It will only take one minute to grow once planted and watered.

Cocoa Beans are slightly trickier to find. They ?grow on trees within the Sunlit Plateau or the Glade of Trust every 30 minutes. You can also buy them from Goofy's Stall in the Sunlit Plateau for 75 Star Coins.

Another dessert you can make

Have plenty of Cocoa Beans left? If that's the case, Hot Cocoa might be the way to go. You can form that with a Cocoa Bean, Milk, and Sugarcane. You can get Sugarcane (or its seeds) from Goofy's Stall in Dazzle Beach. Another dessert you can make without Cocoa Beans is Berry Salad. A Mint Sorbet is another way to go.

There are a few hidden quests this season in Fortnite. They require you to explore the map and find special NPC's who will give you secret objectives. Completing them isn't necessary for anything in particular, but they do contain some fun lore. Also, you'll get a free leve??l-up for completing them!

Peely's astonishing alter-ego, Peelverine, has one such quest for you. This guide will hel??p you locate and complete the Found Story Quest.

Where is Peelverine?

Fortunately, he's not as well hidden as Gwenpool and the Tony Stark fans were. Peelverine can be found skating on banana peels just east of Restored Reels. When you're ??in the area, look for the speech bubble icon on your mini-map t?o hone in on this slippery bub.

Peelverine asks the player to assist them.

Talking to hi??m shows a quest icon in his menu. Select that and listen to what he has to say.

How to activate Rift Beacons for Peelverine

His quest isn't terribly difficult. You'll need to head east into the hills between Restored Reels and Risky Railways. Up there, you'll find a series of Rift Beacons around where the countdown timer for the recent Doom event was. Simply walk up to three of them a??nd interact with them. You don't need to turn this back into Peelverine, as the quest will be completed automatically.

The player flies on a bolt of lightning towards the location of the Rift Beacons

Once you've completed the quest, you'll be granted another level-up for your battle pass. This is, fortunately, a much ??shorter and easier questline than the others.

Tuna in Disney Dreamlight Valley is a gateway to many fishy dishes in the game. It can be found in two separate biom??es in this Disney title.

Tuna Disney Dreamlight Valley location

Tuna can be spotted in the Glade of Trust and Forgotten Lands, just like Squid. However, you'll find Tuna from white ripples within the waters of these locations, not blue. Search the rivers and ponds of these biomes and get your rod out to catch the Tuna you require. You should b??e able to find the fish fairly easily. If you don't see a white ripple, however, try to catch a fish from a different colored ripple for a chance of a white ripple appearing straight afterward.

If you catch a Tuna, you can sell it for ??95 Star Coins and eat it for 350 Energ?y. You'll likely want to make a dish with the Tuna, on the other hand. This ingredient is also collected for one of Nala's quests.

How to make a Tuna Burger

You can make a Tuna Burger fairly easily in Disney Dreamlight Valley, and it's surprisingly a five-star meal. You'll require the???? following:

  • Tuna
  • Lemon
  • Wheat
  • Onion
  • A vegetable of your choice (Carrots, for example)

Lemons grow on trees in the Glade of Trust and Forest of Valor. Wheat is purchased from Goofy's Stall in the Peaceful Meadow. Onions and Onion seeds are bought from Goofy's Stall in the Forest of Valor. You can then use any vegetable of your choice, such as a Carrot, Lettuce, or Potato. After piling them all into a pan at a stove in Chez Remy or your house, you'll finally have a Tuna Burger in your grasp. You could also make a Vegetarian Stew if you'd like.

Tabletop gaming is usually anything but portable, but the Nintendo Switch offers quite a few great digital board games that flip this notion on its head. Rewarding ??turn-based gameplay, in-depth deck building, and exciting strategic competitions are now all available on the go. Below you’ll find our picks for the best board games on Switch that you can dive into right now.

12. Steam: Rails to Riches

train board games

Steam: Rails to Riches is a great railroad board game that’s all about building a strong economic engine with locomotive ones. You’ll start the game by taking out a loan from the bank and linking cities with track tiles. Then, you can start moving resources between locations to turn a profit. This will eventually urbanize the smaller towns through which your railroad operates. There are six different maps to choose from, and the terrain will often alter your strategy. If you’re a fan of the Ticket to Ride theme but want a hi??gher level of complexity, then this one’s a great pick.

11. CATAN: Console Edition

Catan on switch

The digital version of CATAN deserves a place on this list because it’s? a classic of the genre that’s familiar and comfortable to play. However, I’d only recommend picking it up if you’re planning to play either solo or on a single system, because the online multiplayer servers unfortunately shut down about two years ago. The A.I., however, w??orks great for a solo session. If you’re going to play in person, then placing the pieces that box your friends and family out of entire sections of the board is still a grand old time.

10. Talisman

Talisman digital edition

The epic quest for the Crown of Command in Talisman includes all the classic fantasy adventure and character tropes that tabletop gaming enthusiasts love. You can pick from one of sixteen different archetypical roles, hoard magic loot, and slay monsters. What more could you want? Well perhaps some friendlier dice rolls for starters. The Switch port includes three expansions as a part of the base game purchase, the most interesting of which is probably The City because its location feels distinct. The digital edition follows the rules and content additi?ons of the physical version’s fourth edition.

9. Armello

Image via League of Geeks

The digital tabletop game Armello has incredibly rich original world that’s brought to life by solid strategy mechanics and gorgeous animal-themed artwork. The various factions spread across the land seek the power of the King, and can win the game by claiming his crown. To do so, they’ll need to send out their most daring heroes to conquer towns, complete quests, and battle the other factions. It’s worth noting, however, that turns can sometimes be a bit long. As a result, ??it’s best enjoyed alongside more experienced tabletop gamers.

8. Carcassonne

carcassone digital edition
Image via Twin Sails Interactive

The medieval landscapes of the classic tile-laying game Carcassonne are fun and often amusing to build alongside friends. The original Switch release of the game did not offer online multiplayer, but the developer Twin Sails Interactive thankfully remedied this in November 2021. Several expansions were also add??ed at this time to give the game further variability, including The Princess & The Dragon pack and Traders & Builders. Nowadays th??e current Switch edition of the game is surprisingly solid and works well for players of all ages.

7. The Lord of the Rings: Adventure Card Game

Image via Twin Sails Interactive

The digital adaption of The Lord of the Rings LCG allows you to pair together Middle Earth’s most iconic heroes and pit them against three exciting story-driven campaigns that take place in the years between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. There are tons of deck building variations to experiment with, and each scenario plac??es its own demands on the player’s cards. In one quest you might need more battle power to defeat the orcs. In another you might need higher willpower to ensure a successful journey through the Wilderl??and. Though it doesn’t quite have the physical edition’s complexity, this digital card game is still a great time.

6. Evolution Board Game

Image via North Star Games

In the Evolution Board Game, you’re in charge of managing the development of an interesting new species as it fights for survival. In the early phase of the game, players compete for food by playing adaption cards that add features like fat tissue or a long neck to their species. When one or more of the species becomes a carnivore, the adaption pro??cess changes, and you’ll quickly want to grow some horns or learn how to climb trees in the hopes of staying alive. I’d personally recommend adding the Climate DLC to the game when buying because it greatly enriches the original game’s theme.

5. Slay the Spire

slay the spire deck building

Though it was first a video game before becoming a board game, Slay the Spire is an excellent deck building experience that all tabletop fans will enjoy on their? Nintendo Switch. Branching pathways, dungeon-crawler style loot, and a big mix of bosses keep things fresh every time you attempt an ascent. The game mechanics aren’t too difficult to grasp, but assembling your deck for maximum impact takes practice. There are fou??r different playable characters, and each one starts with a few unique abilities in addition to the basic strike and defend cards.

4. Raiders of the North Sea

raiders of the North Sea board game
Image via Dire Wolf Digital

The Raiders of the North Sea board game has a great digital adaption for the Nintendo Switch that takes full advantage of the original’s fun viking theme. It’s primarily a worker placement game, though there are also a ton of other interesting things you can do when it’s your turn. These options include recruiting crew members, upgrading your longship, and launching raids. Sometimes it’s even beneficial to give your warriors a valorous death, because sending them to Valhalla can further increase your score. It’s easy to learn but there’s a ton of strategy involved. As an additional plus, the long setup times that plague the physical edition are of c?ourse mercifully absent.

3. Wingspan

Image via Monster Couch

Wingspan is a relaxing, medium complexity birding board game that absolutely everyone can enjoy. You’ll start the game by selecting a mix of cards and food tokens, which you can then use to add birds to your play mat. If you place your winged friends in the forest, they’ll make it easier to get more food. Add them to your water area and you’ll draw more cards; put them in your grasslands and you’ll lay more eggs. Finish end of round goals, compl??ete bonus cards, and have the most points on the board by the end to claim victory.

2. Istanbul

board games on switch
Image via Acram Digital

The grand markets, crumbling courtyards, and smoke-filled gambling dens of Constantinople come to life in the digital port of Istanbul the board game. You are a merchant whose aim is to collect five gems before your rivals. To do so, you’ll need to send your team of assistants across the city map and give them tasks, such as picking up?? goods, trading, or breaking a family member out of jail. Then you’ll either need to rendezvous with them at the central fountain or pick them up where you left them. The arrangement of location tiles is random, which means the board looks completely different every time you play.

1. Root

root board game switch
Image via Dire Wolf Digital

The untamed wilderness of Root is full of fun battles, unpredictable alliances, and exciting twists of f??ate. The game is a completely different experience depending on the faction you’re playing, which gives it unparalleled replay value. The Marquise de Cat plays an aggressive war board game and builds workshops and lumber mills. The Woodland Alliance launches covert attacks on the Cat’s efforts, and the Vagabond goes o??n quests that cross through the chaos. Meanwhile, the Eyrie Dynasty employs a sequence of decrees enacted by its leader. The theme is gorgeous, the strategic complexity is high, and there are a ton of interesting DLC expansions to choose from as well. For all these reasons it sits at the top of our list.

It's time to flip some faces and figure out the murderer, as Clue, Guess Who, and Connect Four are all heading to Fortnite in the coming months. Clue is the first Hasbro game to launch in Fortnite, and Guess Who comes to the ba?ttle royale title later in Octobe??r.

A refresh of the games

Launching today, Murder Mystery: Clue has players in round-based gameplay and a countdown timer. Everyone has different roles, such as the Killer, Detective, and Guest, and each one has a different win condition. The developer Look North World says, "This new take on Clue offers a highly replayable experience, blending nostalgia with ??engaging gameplay that resonates with today’s players" in the press release.

Guess Who comes to Fortnite later this month, while we'll have to wait until December for Connect Four. This move is to help pivot Hasbro's classic games to a modern audience. Apparently, they ?will be "offering a fresh twist that reimagines these classic board games."

"We are excited to work with Hasbro, a brand that understands the power?? of user-generated content as a unique opportunity to connect with passionate gamers," said Look North World Founder and CEO Alex Seropian.

Seropian helped create Bungie, the studio that developed the legendary Halo and Destiny series. Now, Look North World is creating content for Fortnite and premium mods for ARK: Survival Ascended.

Hasbro claimed in 2023 that Clue is the second-most popular boar?d game in the world. It has sold over 150 million copies in its lifetime. It also has a new live-action film on the way by director James Bobin and 20th Century Studios. The game itself has been around for over 70 years and was created by Anthon??y Pratt during World War 2.
