Good news for 1080p users

Naughty Dog has expanded its PlayStation 4 Pro support for The Last of Us Remastered and Left Behind, providing more display options to bette??r fit your preferences and your specific setup. There are also a pair of multiplayer fixes -- one for an aiming issue, and another for a smoke-bomb exploit.

"Starting today, PS4 Pro players will be able to select from new menu options and prese??ts that provide additional configurations for resolution, framerate, and shadow quality. These new display settings options offer greater flexibility to PS4 Pro players connected to a 4K display, as well as traditional HD disp?lays through supersampling." As a 1080p TV owner, that last word is the one I was hoping to see pop up again. Supersampling (and display options, in general) are real nice.

This is all good to know for the next time I play, which will probably be right before the sequel drops, whenever that might be. I missed out on the prior PS4 Pro patch -- the one that introduced some pesky new issues for certain setups -- so with this latest update, it should be smooth sailin?g.

A new PS4 update brings it into the future

Sony just added HDR support to Last of Us Remastered ahead of the launch of the PS4 Pro. As a reminder, you don't need a Pro to necessarily ??take advantage of some of the upscaling features, as evidenced by some of these off-screen comparison screens from ??NeoGAF users below. 

It's not the most technical test in the world but you can see a very clear difference between the original version and the HDR-ified one (the screen you are looking at this now is likely not HDR compatible, but it's easy to see the e??xtra detail that's being rendered), which should make a lot of expensive TV owners happy. Since Nintendo clearly isn't getting in on th??e 4K arms race this and the Xbox One S are basically it until the Scorpio launches, so enjoy the calm before the storm with this incremental upgrades for now.

'I guess Nolan North was kind of right'

Naughty Dog has clarified rumours regarding a sequel to 2013's highly acclaimed The Last of Us.

Talking to Official PlayStation Magazine (via GamesRadar), Neil Druckmann explained that while a sequ?el may have been discussed, nothing's underway... yet. 

“When Bruce [Straley, game director] and I moved over to Uncharted 4, we were brainstorming ideas for The Last Of Us 2 with new characters; ideas for The Last Of Us 2 with Joel and Ellie; ideas for a sci-fi game; ideas for a fantasy game, and building prototypes for each one of those ideas," said Druckmann. "And just as we were getting close to settling or narrowing that list down, we were asked to work on Uncharted 4.”

Fuel was added to the speculative fire when voice actor Nolan Nor??th commented that he knew the team was working on a sequel, and Naughty Dog writer Josh Scherr referred to the game as "the first" The Last of Us.

“You know, there’s a part of me that’s really looking forward to going back to those things, but I have no cycle??s left in my mind even to be thinking about that right now!” Druckmann added.

“So, I guess [North] was kind of right in that we were working on stuff, but we don’t know what we’re doing next and we won’t know until probably a few months after we finish Uncharted 4.”

Outbreak Day 2015

Canonically, Outbreak Day -- the day when the Cordyceps fungus got out of control and dramatically altered the world in The Last of Us -- occurred on September 26, 2013. We're coming up on the second anniversary of that fateful date, but the celebration starts early. Beginning tomorrow, September 23, The Last of Us content will be discounted up to 50 percent on both PlayS??tation 3 and PlayS?tation 4.

The deals might draw in some new players, but the superfans have something to look forward to as well. A sick-looking Clicker statue is in production. The PlayStation Blog post says it's available for pre-order now,?? but clicking through leads to a dead end. Presumably, it should go live any minute now.

The post on it doesn't offer many specifics on the deals, but notes that it is "select content." I'm hoping for a price cut on the DLC weapons and survival skills for the multiplayer. As scummy as it is, I? can't help but want to deal out my own Crossbow trolling or Frontier Rifle/Revolver wizardr?y.

Naughty Dog has sliced apart The Last of Us. If you're curious to try Left Behind, the prequel story starring Ellie and h??er? best bud Riley, you can now do that without committing to the larger story (or Factions multiplayer). It's available on PS3 and PS4 as a standalone download for $9.99.

From there, if you do want to upgrade, it's $19.99 for the full single-player campaign and $9.99 for the multiplayer. I fully intend to play Left Behind eventually, but it's hard to?? commit when Kyle and Darren keep pulling me bac??k into Factions. Such a captivating, time-melting mode.

Capturing cool, beautiful, or otherwise standout moments in videogames can be such a joy, and I'm hopeful that more developers will follow the recent examples set by inFamous: Second Son and The Last of Us Remastered by ?including built-in photo tools. Fun for us, good marketing for them.

Speaking of ??the latter game, Naughty Dog is holding a photo contest in the US now through September 5 with priz??es like a poster-sized image of your photo signed by the development team and a Joel and Ellie statuette up for grabs.

Draw distances improved, for instance

While MeriStation writer Javi Andres was attending a presentation that discussed the features of the new Last of Us Remaster on the PS4, a few details we??re presented that really give us a big picture of ?what to expect.

For starters, "all major add-on content" will be added to the game for sure, including the two multiplayer DLCs and the Left Behind story. All DLC will be Cross-Buy compatible between the PS3 and PS4 (nice!), and "additional" add-on releases are planned for 2014 -- that's pretty cryptic, but exciting for fans who want more (though I suspect small Assassin's Creed style multiplayer updates?? here and there, and nothing major).

You'll also find that it supports 1080p/60fps, but you can change the game to a 30fps mode if you want. Also, textures are four times more detailed, everything is upgraded basically (including the draw distances), there's "expanded audio options," you can swap the trigger and thumbstick controls, and there's a commentary track featuring the gam??e's stars.

Yep, this is a decent upgrade.

Responding to a comment on the EU PlayStation Blog post about The Last of Us' final content release for Season Pass owners -- a bunch of new stuff for multiplayer and the single-player's "hardest challenge" yet, Grounded Mode --  Naughty Dog spoke about possibly saving current players money on the upcoming PlayStation 4 remaster once it's out.

Asked if folks who own The Last of Us and its DLC pass will get a discount on the new version of the game, community strat??egist Eric Monacelli said: "We're looking into the business model for all this and will post about this once we have input from all regions."

They really ought to offer something for those players. Even with the visual upgrades and bonus content included in Remastered, paying a full $60 again is ?a bit much to a??sk of us.
