Last?? month's PlayStation Plus Game Catalog additions were decent. But this month, PlayStation really brought the goods if you're an RPG fan. While the headliner for the month is the newest Need for Speed title, Need for Speed Unbound, the true gems in my opinion are the addition of Tales of Arise, The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition, and Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

An RPG-loaded Month

Tales of Arise is the latest entry in the Tales series and is an absolute banger of an RPG. Our very own Eric Van Allen scored it an 8.5 when it was release??d back in 2021, calling it "a strong step forward for a series with a bright future ahead of it." I've still yet to beat it and actually think a friend is still "borrowing" my copy so this is certainly a case for me to get back in and finish it.

Meanwhile, The Outer Worlds continues to be probably my favorite Obsidian Entertainment RPG, at least up there with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Our Managing Editor Chris Carter ?reviewed it back in 2019 and gave it a score of 9, p??raising the open-world RPGs "charm and succinct vision withou??t much bloat."

And then there's also Assassin's Creed Valhalla which while not an RPG in the traditional sense, certainly has RPG mechanics in a massive open world. It got a bit t??oo repetitive for me near the end, but overall it's a fun ride and up there with some of the best in the series.

Here are all the games coming?? to the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium Game Cat??alog on February 20:

  • Need for Speed Unbound (PS5)
  • The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition (PS5)
  • Tales of Arise (PS5 and PS4)
  • Assassin's Creed Valhalla (PS5 and PS4)
  • Roguebook (PS5 and PS4)
  • LEGO Worlds (PS4)
  • LEGO Jurassic World (PS4)
  • Rogue Lords (PS4)
  • Tales of Zestiria (PS4)

Those?? with PlayStation Premium will also get four?? new Classics titles:

  • Resistance: Retribution (Playable via PS5 and PS4)
  • Jet Moto 2 (Playable via PS5 and PS4)
  • Tales of Symphonia (Playable via PS5 and PS4)
  • Tales of Vesperia (Playable via PS5 and PS4)

As you can see, plenty of RPG options. Especially if you are a Tales fan. I hope someday we get a more modern opportunity to revisit Tales of Graces, it was one of my favorites!

While Starfield is nearly here, you might not be partaking (for whatever reason!). From the thoroughly entertaining The Outer Worlds to the unrestricted freedom of No Man's Sky, let's look at the six best games thematically similar to Starfield that will satisfy your sci-fi-loving bra??in right now.

[caption id="attachment_367652" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Chorus Sci-Fi Game Image via Deep Silver[/caption]

Chorus

One of the most underrated games in 2021, Chorus should be on your list if you crave sci-fi action. While you can't get out of your spaceship and wander about, there is an open area to explore as you fly ?at high speed through asteroids and space gates. The combat impresses with its fast-paced action and powerful weapons. There's also an intriguing storyline to foll??ow, complete with side quests to complement it.

[caption id="attachment_367674" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Elite Dangerous Games like Starfield Image via Frontier Developments[/caption]

Elite Dangerous

Want to explore the stars but you're stuck at home with a 9-5 job? Elite Dangerous might be able to transport you beyond the skies above. You'll be upgrading your ship as you fight enemy forces, explore the beautiful cosmos, and soar amongst the stars alongside your friends. There's also a major sense of scale as the developer claims on its Steam page that "the entirety of the Milky Way [is] re-created at its full galactic proportions". It has been free on the Epic Games Store in the pa??st, so check your library if you haven't already.

[caption id="attachment_367676" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Mass Effect Legendary Edition Image via EA[/caption]

Mass Effect Legendary Edition

One of Bethesda's greatest aspects is its storytelling. The majority of its games have immense lore and an intriguing storyline full of interesting characters. The Mass Effect series offers a similarly strong narrative that has you invested in its roster of heroes and villains. In addition, the worldbuilding is outstanding, as you get more intrigued by the factions and environments of this sci-fi universe the deeper you delve into it. Hopefully, Starfield will offer a story t?hat has just as much drama as the legendary BioWare series.

[caption id="attachment_367643" align="alignnone" width="1200"]No Man's Sky Games like Starfield Image via Hello Games[/caption]

No Man's Sky

With one of the rockiest launches in modern gaming history, No Man's Sky was a shell of the promises original made by the developer Hello Games. Fortunately, over the years, the game has received wide acclaim for its bevy of features, stunning landscapes, and introduction of co-op. The randomized nature of the game has given us strange new creatures and gorgeous scenery that fans often share their pictures of No Man's Sky. Starfield also features many, many worlds; No Man's Sky has likely inspire??d Bethesda with its daring concept, for ?better or for worse. Hopefully, the former.

[caption id="attachment_367661" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Outer Wilds Games like Starfield Image via Annapurna Interactive[/caption]

Outer Wilds

If No Man's Sky doesn't tickle your fancy, Outer Wilds might instead. You're exploring a solar system that is trapped in a time loop, and it is up to you to solve the mystery behind it. The planets in this game each offer their own little secrets to discover as you find out details about the Dark Bramble and the alien ruins across the system. While there are no RPG mechanics to speak of, Outer Wilds will likely give you the same exploratory rush in Starfield. Nevertheless, Josh Talentino called the game "Superb" in his review for Destructoid.

[caption id="attachment_367670" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The Outer Worlds Obsidian RPG Image via Private Division[/caption]

The Outer Worlds

The closest game you'll get to Starfield is probably The Outer Worlds. Not to be confused with the similarly titled last entry, this Obsidian FPS/RPG has an exciting and engaging campaign. You'll find well-written characters, an entertaining loot-and-shoot game loop, and a captivating story. The Outer Worlds does not feature interspace combat or a huge universe to explore. However, the densely populated environments have engrossing side missions and inspired art design. In fact, The Outer Worlds was Destructoid's 2019 Game of the Year.

[caption id="attachment_395803" align="alignnone" width="640"]Death Stranding combat Image via 505 Games[/caption]

Death Stranding

While there aren't "traditional" RPG mechanics in Death Stranding, that sense of exploration from Starfield is present in the game. You’re delivering packages throughout the world and helping connect the once-separated areas of post-apocalyptic America back together. Directed by Metal Gear Solid veteran Hideo Kojima, its sci-fi concepts? are thought-provoking and stunning to behold.

The interactability between players is also unique as you help each other form a better world. Death Stranding’s a??vailable on Xbox Game Pas?s for PC if you want to check it out.

[caption id="attachment_395804" align="alignnone" width="640"]Deliver Us the Moon gameplay Image via KeokeN Interactive[/caption]

Deliver Us The Moon

If you want to explore a sci-fi world without chaotic shooting gameplay, Deliver Us The Moon might be? your ticket. You’re exploring a space station that is unrespo??nsive and within it, you’ll discover exactly what has happened. The story is told in a quiet, yet impactful way. The puzzles are also well-implemented.

The detailed environments also present the story well, hopefully like Starfield. It??’s a sci-fi game that’s a breath of fresh air (well, at least as fresh as it can be in space).

[caption id="attachment_395805" align="alignnone" width="640"]Star Wars Squadrons gameplay Image via EA[/caption]

Star Wars Squadrons

Lastly, there’s Star Wars Squadrons. The force is strong with this one! If you want to prepare yourself for ship battles in Starfield, you can control various Star Wars ships in Squadrons, and it's a rush to shoot an Imperial ship in an X-Wing in this game. The cockpit view is also one-to-one to what Rebels like Wedge and Luke saw back in the?? day with all the visual do-hickeys and buttons intact.

As our review notes: “It finds a great balance between making the player feel like a responsible pilot and a complete badass./p>

The space adventure gets a special collection

Obsidian's outer-space RPG The Outer Worlds is getting a special edition for newer consoles and PC. The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition arrives o?n March 7, 2023 for P??layStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Given that this version is heading to newer consoles, it'll have a few more bells and whistles compared to the original Outer Worlds. Higher resolution graphics and impr?oved performance, enhanced details, dynamic weather, overhauled lighting, and more all await.

And for those who missed the extra story post-launch, Spacer's Choice links all that in too. The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition will have both DLC packs, Murder on Eridanos and Peril on Gorgon, included in the p??ackage. The new version will retail for $59.99 by itself, though if you own the game on a previous system (PS4, Xbox One) or on the same PC storefront, you can upgrade to this version for $9.99.

For those looking to keep their adventure going, though, you'll have to stay on the original platform. A Private Division spokesperson confirmed to us that saves will not transfer over to The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition.

It's Spacer's Choice

It's a bit of a surprise to see The Outer Worlds get a bumped-up option for the newer consoles, but likely a welcome one for those who missed this game the first time around. Obsidian's space adventure was certainly a little messy at times, but had some worlds and characters that made a decent impact.

With a new sequel in the works, this does seem like a decent excuse to either refresh yourself or get up-to-speed with The Outer Worlds. Or heck, even if you just need a space-centered RPG to tide you over for whenever Starfield arrives.

The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition arrives for PC, PS5, and Xbox Ser??ies X|S on March 7.

An announcement in name only

Well, we know Outer Worlds 2 is coming, thanks to a teaser trailer at the Microsoft Games Showcase. The trailer was, well, vague to say the least, but hey, at least we know it's happening right? And the devs gave us that classic Outer Worlds tongue-in-cheek humor, so we have that to l??ook f??orward to.

According to studio head Feargus Urquhart, The Outer Worlds 2 will revolve around a new crew and even a new star system.

The Medusa Touch

If you're currently zapping through the Switch port of Obsidian's The Outer Worlds, then you'll be pleased to hear that Peril on Gorgon - the sci-fi adventure's first DLC expansion - will be arriving on the Nintendo platform on February 10.

Released on PS4, PC, and Xbox One back in September 2020, Peril on Gorgon sees the crew of The Unreliable travel to an abandoned science outpost located on the titular asteroid. There they discover the grim aftermath of Halcyon's experiments??, as they pick their way through the ruins of a project gone very, very wrong.

Peril on Gorgon features a brand new location filled with weaponry and gear just waiting to be looted. It also introduces new questlines and characters - both friendly and not-so-friendly. Once installed, players can visit Gorgon at any time provided they have passed the planet Monarch, so you don't have to have completed The Outer Worlds before you take this detour into the new world.

Freebird!

From the moment the initial trailer of The Outer Worlds dropped, where it brazenly declared that it was from the developers of "The original" Fallout and Fallout: New Vegas, it was a game that I knew I needed in my life. Then the inevitable happened when Epic Games Store snapped it up as a timed exclusive, which I can't blame Obsidian for since the game uses Unreal Engine 4 and there are a lot of incentives in place to ?cozy up to Epics storefront for games th??at use their engine.

While I've not been overly vocal about it, I've not been happy with how Epic has been handing their attempt to carve out a niche in the PC storefront market. Being the stubborn Jersey boy that I am though, I decided my enjoyment was able to be put on hold for a year all in the name of the greater good. Despite it being my most anticipated game of 2019, I settled in for the long slumber as I prepared to wait a year for The Outer Worlds to come to another storefront.

I awake today from my slumber to see that The Outer Worlds has escaped its bounds on the Epic Games Store (and Xbox Games Pass for PC) and is now available on both Steam and GOG. The Peril on Gorgon expansion is also being released day one which means if one so chooses you ?can get it all with n?o need to wait.

While the game is launching at full price despite the year since ?the initial release, there is a hefty sale going on for the Steam release through November 6 to the tune of 50% off the base game. Those wanting the expansion pass will still have to pay full price though. The sale on the base game is also present on GOG but there is no indication of when that sale wil?l end.

I know at least a handful of people like me who waited this incredibly long year (remember when Covid-19 wasn't a thing?) to play what was eventually named Destructoid's Game of the Year. To those people I wil??l quote the great Alton Brown: "Your patience has been rewarded."

Hopefully next comes that Peril on Gorgon DLC

The Outer Worlds on Switch prompted a lot of conversation about if some sacrifices are worth making when porting a game to weaker hardware. For those who played it on PC, PS4, or Xbox One, it was a noticeable downgrade for sure. For me, having never played it on stronger systems, I found it to be decent enough

It looked rough and disappointingly barren, but that might change later this month when? the long-awaited patch will release on Switch. Full patch note??s are being withheld for now, but the game's Twitter page decided to give us a sneak peek at how the visuals will improve with the download.

Oh heck yes. Here's to hoping this doesn't take up too much? space on my microSD card.

The Outer Worlds is now available on Nintendo Switch, PS4, ??Xbox One, and PC via the Epic Gam?es Store. It will launch on Steam on October 23.

September 9

The Outer Worlds came out nearly a year ago, but it's revving up and almost ready to deliver its first major DLC in just a few weeks.

Peril on Gorgon is nearly here, but before it hits you can check out this lengthy and informative clip from Obsidian; complete with developer commentary. It walks you through the basic gist of the DLC, the new setting and the RPG choices that await you. If you're planning on going in complet??ely blind, you should skip this one as it dives into some story bits.

In case you forgot, here's a brief recap: "A severed arm and a mysterious message lead the crew of the Unreliable to the Gorgon Asteroid, formerly the site of one of Halcyon’s most ambitious and disastrous scientific undertakings, now a lawless den of monsters and marauders. Wealthy recluse Minnie Ambrose tasks the crew with finding answers about Dr. Olivia Ambrose, her mother and the doomed project’s disgraced director, but they are so?on ensnared in an intrigue that will change the colony forever."

As a note, Peril on Gorgon is out on September 9 on everything but the Switch (PC, PS4, Xbox One). This expansion will run you $14.99 as a standalone purchase, or $24.99 as part of the season pass that includes another content drop: Murder on Eridanos??. If you have Xbox Game Pass you can net 10% off the DL??C.

As always, wait and see on the first bit be?fore you commit to bot??h.

The first of two story expansions

As revealed on the Xbox Games Showcase stream, that recent DLC tease for The Outer Worlds was leading up to Peril on Gorgon, a new s??lice of story set on the Gorgon Asteroid, "formerly the site of one of Halcyon's most ambitious?? and disastrous scientific undertakings."

It's the first of two Outer Worlds "narrative expansions" (an Expansion Pass will net you a slight discount) and it's going to raise the level cap, add new perks and character flaws,?? and set you loose with three new science weapons, one of which is a melee weapon called the Pest Extermination Tool.

Story-wise, you're looking into the now-canceled Gorgon Project and you'll have to get through "warped" aliens. According to Obsidian, "Wealthy recluse Minni?e Ambrose tasks the crew with finding answers about Dr. Olivia Ambrose, her mother and the doomed project's disgraced director, but they are soon ensnared in an intrigue that will change the colony forever."

Peril on Gorgon is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on September 9, 2020. This first expansion will cost $14.99 and it'll also be bundled into the $24.99 Expansion Pass if you want both of 'em??.

Help me figure out the jingle!

You can't go to the Outer Worlds site right now without maneuvering through an ever-so-brief takeover. Try it for yourself. You'll have to sit through Spacer's Choice hawking some Adrena-Time. ("It's not the best?? choice, it's Spacer's Choice!")

This, more likely than not, is the start of a trail of teases for Outer Worlds' first campaign add-on. We've been?? told for months now that Obsidian's latest RPG is getting story DLC, and it seems like we'll finally hear something about it soon. Thus far, we can? probably safely deduce that cheap-o corporation Spacer's Choice plays a prominent role.

The timing has led plenty of people to speculate that a full-on reveal is coming as part of the Xbox Games Showcase on Thursday. That... could go either way. Xbox owns Obsidian, and it'll definitely promote campaign DLC for a recent Game of the Year contender. But, this is a forward-looking event that's focused on?? Xbox Series X games, and bringing something from last-gen might not show well. It might not be the time nor place.

If you're curious, there are three click-thru images for Adrena-Time, all of which are in the gallery below. Now, if someone could help me out with the jingle, ??that'd be fantastic. I've been listening for like 15 minutes and cannot for the life of me make out the last word of the first line. "Show your boss that you are ____ because you take Adrena-Time."

Coming soon

After a lengthy wait period (approximately six and a half months) from the core launch of The Outer Worlds, Switch users finally got their port. But like most monkey's paw wishes, it was polarizing and in many way?s, not optimized.

While Obsidian worked on the core game, Virtuos handled the Switch version, and it seems lik??e there's thankfully more work to be done. According to publisher Private Divis??ion, the Switch edition will be getting a new patch soon. Here's the full statement:

"Employees of Halcyon! A patch for The Outer Worlds on Nintendo Switch is in the work??s, and the team at Virtuos is investigating to further improve the game’s performance."

It's vague, but ?gets the point across. No timeline is given, but "soon" is a good bet.

Come in with realistic expectations and you'll be happy

Playing The Outer Worlds on Nintendo Switch is sorta like how you might imagine the PC version looks with most of its visual settings cranked way down or outright disabled. It's not pretty – the textures, assets, and character and environmental details took a big hit – but hey, at least it runs okay.

Obsidian's silver-tongued sci-fi RPG targets 30 frames per second, which it accomplishes well enough that the game's real-time-with-slow-mo combat system d??oesn't suffer too much. That sa?id, you're gonna see clear slowdown in busy environments, especially if you're a habitual sprinter like me.

Officially, the Switch version runs at 720p in portable mode and 1080p docked, hence the need for noticeably stripped-back visuals. Were the trade-offs worth it? Should t???his port exist? Yes. Double yes.

The Outer Worlds Nintendo Switch Terra 2 screenshotSights like this take some getting used to if you've played the PC or even console versions.

If you didn't mind the Switch version of The Witcher 3 (for reference, it runs at 540p portable and up to 720p docked), you'll be able to stomach The Outer Worlds just ??fine. It's still recognizable. It's still playable. You'll still feel like you're picking your poison during moral dilemmas and letting Parvati?? down.

By the time I explored Edgewater, the first settlement, my eyes had pretty much adjusted to the blurry ground and building textures, the latter of which bothered me more than the former. When The Outer Worlds leans into its colorful alien landscapes, it's easier to overlook. When you're running errands in developed, densely-packed interior areas like The Groundbreaker, every little eyesore stands out.

My biggest complaint – the setback that pulls me out of the role-playing experience more than anything else – is the loading. From the main menu, it can take almost a minute to get into the game. Fast-traveling, something I do a lot of in The Outer Worlds, can trigger 30-second loading screens.

I remembe?r having a similar problem on Xbox One, but it's more pronounced on a portable system.

Other than a companion ability audio cue that temporarily vanished and a jarring, oh-shit-I-gotta-load-right-this-second pop-up this one time when I entered a building in an open area, I didn't encounter anything too out? of the ordinary or technically concerning in my four hours of space adventures.

The Outer Worlds Nintendo Switch Groundbreaker screenshotThe Groundbreaker looks relatively okay in screenshots, but in motion, it can struggle a bit.

It's worth mentioning that the physical edition for Switch has a day-one patch "that could be up to 6GB," according to Obsidian. "This patch will optimize gameplay, provide additional hi-res textures, and include other fixes to prov??ide the employees of Halcyon with the best gameplay experience.??"

At the time of writing, my digital copy of the game takes up 13.7GB. With more and more beefy th??ird-party Switch ports showin?g up in 2020, I think I'll need to invest in higher-capacity storage soon.

One of the first things I looked for was a text-size option – something that was thankfully patched into the prior versions of The Outer Worlds. The sc??ale runs from one to ten, and the biggest size is sufficient for a big-screen TV. I d??idn't struggle with menu or dialog text on the handheld Switch screen, either.

The other thing I wanted to try, per Switch port tradition??, was motion controls. There are three options:

  • On - Always use Motion Aiming to control your camera view.
  • Aiming Only - Only use Motion Aiming when holding the aim button with a ranged weapon equipped.
  • Off - Turn off Motion Aiming.

Here's a partial look at the control settings:

The Outer Worlds Nintendo Switch controller optionsAnother win for gyro fans, I'd say. (Also, wow, I made it this far without typing "Outer Wilds.")

I've included a few other Switch screenshots, including one of my favorite Max quotes, in the gallery below. At its best, this port is pleasantly surprising. At its worse, the graphics are distract?ing.

For more thoughts on The Outer Worlds as a game you can spend $60 on, I'll just say that it captures some (but not all) of the Fallout: New Vegas charm, and I'll point you to Chris' review of the PS4 version. At this point, I'd enc?ourage Switch owners to wait?? for a discount unless they're really feeling it.

Compromises had to be?? made, but I'm glad to see the Switch pick up new ports, fla?ws and all.

720p in handheld form

Stop me if you've seen this before. A big-name game launches simultaneously for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, with a Switch e??dition "comi??ng later."

Given the reputation some games have as a "poor Switch port," some publishers really want to get it right so they don't mess up their chances at extra cash on what is ostensibly a cash cow system at the moment. We've seen it with Outer Worlds and we're also seeing it with the recently released Doom Eternal, which still doesn't have a Switch date.

Speaking of the former, publisher Private Division reached out to Nintendo Everything to provide confirmation of the impending June 5 Switch version, who explained what people can look forward to. In sh??ort, it's pretty standard Switch port stuff. The game will "target" 30 frames per second, with the aim to hit 720p in por??table mode and 1080p docked. Apparently it'll also have gyro aiming and sticky targeting.

While this is an obvious statement, developer ??Obsidian says that it's "very ha?ppy" with how the game operates on Switch. If it actually hits those targets consistently, I think most people will be happy too.

Obsidian shared more Nintendo Switch screenshots today

We're coming up on the final, at-last, gonna-happen June 5 Nintendo Switch release for The Outer Worlds. How's it s?haping up? We haven't seen much gameplay footage yet, but Obsidian did release a ??batch of screenshots with Vicar Max, Nyoka, and that poor vendor trapped in a Moon Man getup.

I'm coming in with low expectations for the port's visual fidelity on Switch, and that was not a mistake. The Outer Worlds' textures and assets, in pa??rticular, took a big hit compared to the PC, PS4, and Xbox One versions. It is what it is, though – as long as the game runs moderately well, I don't mind. I'll be too busy stressing? about making the right call during pivotal "Who are you gonna screw over?" decisions.

Time will tell, and while the eShop now has a pre-purchase option, it's best to wait for impressions.

A cartridge is still planned

The collective of Obsidian Entertainment, Virtuous Games and Private Division have done it: they've weathered the storm formed by coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns, and are now ready to release The Outer Worlds on Switch.

According to the publisher it's now due on June 5, with a retail edition that will s?port a physical cart: yes, the delay led to them including a cart in the mix, and the game is priced at $60 both digital??ly and physically.

But there is a catch! Obsidian warns that there will be a massive day one patch that "could take up to 6 GB of space," which is a pretty big doozy of a possibility for some Switch users. The patch will contain "various gameplay optimizations and hi-res textures." At 6 GB, it's pretty significant. For comparison, all of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's base game is 13.4 GB.

As a reminder, The Outer Worlds was our Game of the Year last year a??nd is worth playing at some point. Though we don't know how the Switch edition fares, quality-wise, keep your eye on it if that's your only option.

20 out of 20 optometrists approve

The Outer Worlds launched last October with some tiny, baby-sized font. Only hawks could make out the text without squinting. A month later, developer Obsidian released an update that included a toggle for increasing the font size. It still wasn't big enough for s?ome people, especially ?the text for item descriptions.

Finally, we're gonna get some huge, geriatric-certified font. Obsidian is introducing a font-size slider to Outer Worlds sometime this week. Here ??it is in all its glor??y:

Slide that bad boy all the way up and stop leaning toward your TV and straining your eyes. You'll make more benevolent dialogue choices when you aren't grumpy about the text size. Ergo, the world of The Outer Worlds will be a better place just because now there's so?me big-ass font...probably, that is.

But now there will be a physical cartridge

The coronavirus epidemic in China has had significant effect on the video game industry. Last week, Taipei Game Show, one of the most-attended video game conventions in the world, was postponed due to the outbreak. Now, a highly-anticipated port of one o??f 2019's best games has?? been pushed back.

Publisher Private Division has announced that the Switch port of Obsidian's The Outer Worlds has ?been delayed due to coronavirus health concerns. Virtuos is the studio that's handling the port, and it's primarily located in China. Its largest team is in Shanghai, but it also has offices in Chengdu and Xian.

The originally scheduled launch date for The Outer Worlds on Switch was March 6. Exactl??y one month away from that target, Private Division made the call to delay the port as it became evident that development cou?ldn't continue at a normal pace. There's no new release date yet.

However,? there is a silver lining. The delay affords Private Division the opportunity t?o manufacture a physical Switch cartridge. Before, the physical version was simply a box with a download code inside. Collectors should be plenty happy about that -- they'll just have to wait a little longer than originally thought.

March 6, to be exact

Obsidian has pulled back the curtain on the "TBA" release date for The Outer Worlds on Switch: it is now ?set for March 6, 2020, as confirmed to Destructoid.

It will go for $59.99 on the eShop and at retail: but note that publisher Private Division has confirmed that the physical boxed copy will just contain a game code, with no cart. Y?ou can check out the offici?al Switch box in the gallery below.

I wonder how this port will fare financially and in terms of quality. A lot of folks have already taken advantage of that $1 Ultimate Game Pass deal, and have experienced Outer Worlds on ?PC and? Xbox One. Still, you should never underestimate the Switch.

Plus, this game would be....adequately suited for the Switch (you were expecting perfect, right!) with its open sandboxes that are conducive to stop and go play sessions. But no game cart, when The Witcher III just pulled it off? Not so great.

The Outer Worlds

Obsidian traded one wasteland for another, from the post-nuclear apocalypse to the intergalactic mess caused by mega-corporate mega-greed. Truth be told, Obsidian has never really had trouble diversifying. Obsidian has pulled out the best in licensed products like Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II and South Park: The Stick of Truth. It has crafted CRPGs with hugely ambitious stories like Pillars of Eternity that have enough writing to fill tomes. And, it has created some of the most beloved-yet-overlooked games of a generation like Fallout: New Vegas and Alpha Protocol

It'd be criminal to overlook Obsidian's latest, certainly more flagrant than lockpicking or hacking but probably not as bad as murder. Probably. The Outer Worlds is one of 2019's very best video games, and no persuasion from a silver-tongued charmer is necessary. Everyone who plays The Outer Worlds knows it's a star.

To put it simply, The Outer Worlds does nearly everything you'd expect from a role-playing game like this. It has cutting and incisive writing, quick with a joke and quicker to leave you considering how your character would respond. The quest design is varied??, leaving every situation to be approached from all sorts of angles. There are companion characters that you're going to fall in love with; they're show-stealers in an already incredible game.

Now, to put it bluntly, The Outer Worlds is nearly everything you want if you expect better from Fallout. It's the sort of creative and imaginative RPG that made people go head over heels for Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Obsidian has proven that it's more tha?n capable of carryin?g the torch, even if it's only in spirit and not in name.

Because of The Outer Worlds' immediate success (and because it's not 200 hours long), there's a strong chance we'll see a sequel. In the words of? PT Barnum, "Always leave them wanting more." Halcyon, indeed.

Also, the joy of 'dumb' character options and flaws

The Outer Worlds is a fantastic late-2019 bloomer for multiple reasons. One, we finally got the Fallout game we've been waiting for since New Vegas. Two, it was accessible as hell thanks to the Xbox Game Pass system, putting it into the hands of a lot of people who otherwise never would have bought it amid a very busy seas??on.

This success hasn't gone to Obsidian Entertainment's heads according to a new Game Informer magazine interview, which breaks down a few of the odder design choices that help make Outer Worlds tick. Apparently some folks have been comparing the game to Mass Effect (why? Because it's sci-fi?), as well as the more obvious showdown of Fallout. In response, co-director Leonard Boyarsky retorts that "as long as they're made favorably," they're great. Co-director Tim Cain agrees, though he notes that Outer Worlds is not exactly like those games.

True that, as the really weird Outer Worlds feel (coupled with a great eccentric script) is partially due to the "dumb" character option that alters the dialogue on top of the interesting flaw system (which hamstrings your character in exchange for a positive perk). Boyarsky chalks it up to being "silly" as a studio, and "fighting to the end" to get ideas like that in. That includes burdening the writers with coming? up with actual dialogue for that concept, but Boyarsky says they were more than up to the task.

Similarly, the team notes that flaws help add another layer of difficulty on top of the default toggles. Boyarsky has a response for folks who say the game is "too easy" by default: "Did you take any flaws? The game could be a lot harder than what you're playing! You're choosing to make it easy." As for the decision to ma?ke The Board (basically the corporate villains of the game) almost wholly evil, Boyarsky contends that it's more exciting that way as it adds tension: though I'd argue that there's plenty of grey area in-between that faction choice sandwich.

So how about a sequel? "We'll have to wait and see on that" Boyarsky says. Obsidian already has a ton of ideas "[they'd] love to do," but they have nothing to announce at this time. They are owned by Microsoft after all, and it would be a brilliant plan to hook everyone cross-platform with Outer Worlds then get them invested in Outer Worlds 2 exclusively on Xbox Series X.

But you may still find yourself squinting

The Outer Worlds and Death Stranding are two games I'm very into right now, but they both contain lots of little words that can be a struggle to make out. I can't imagine what it's been like for folks playing on a res?ponsible-human-sized TV, or anyone who likes to sit a decent distance away from their screen.

Obsidian has heard our pleas for bigger text. As of patch 1.1, The Outer Worlds now has an option to increase t?he?? font size – you can find it inside the Settings menu, tucked away in the UI tab.

According to VICE, the biggest?? increase is found in conversational text – a major facet of this chatty RPG – but item descriptions in your inventory might still be tough to pin down, toggle or no toggle.

U??pdate 1.1 isn't solely here to bump up the font, though. There are also fixes and tweaks:

  • The game crashing at a specific point when the player has reached Tartarus has been resolved.
  • Players will no longer experience muffled sounds when playing on the PlayStation 4.
  • The Prismatic Hammer has been rebalanced and no longer incorrectly uses the level multiplier as an exponent instead of a multiplier and will no longer do 10s of thousands of points of damage at a higher level. Now deals the damage it should have been dealing all along.
  • Existing Botched companion quests will have their status reset to Active allowing the player to add them to a party when leaving the ship in order to un-botch the quests, unless the death occurred prior to unlocking the companion quest.
  • Fix for "Radio Free Monarch" where issues would happen when talking to Nayoka while having SAM in your party.
  • Foliage on the Xbox One now has parity with the foliage on PlayStation 4.
  • The achievement/trophy for "It's Not the Best Choice" will pop correctly.

I'm? looking forward to getting back to my crew onc?e I lighten my backlog a bit more.

Launch window...now narrower

While The Outer Worlds arrived last month on PC, PS4 and Xbox One (including a Game Pass launch), the Switch version was said to be coming "later" at some point. When later?! Well, some originally assumed that by the end of 2019 would have been late enough, but recently ??it was confirmed that th??e port would arrive sometime in 2020.

Now, thanks to a new financial report?? from Take-Two?, we know that the game is coming before the start of April 2020, giving us a first quarter window. Take-Two specifically states: "The title will also be available for Nintendo Switch in calendar 2020, during our fiscal year 2020."

Wait what does Take-Two have to do with this? Well they own Private Division, who published Outer Worlds, and also handled Kerbal Space Program and Ancestors. Although Obs?idian is now owned by Microsoft the deal was already in place, and now Take-Two gets ??to add another feather to their cap.

If Take-Two was smart they'd completely avoid that lousy [S]March weather, as Final Fantasy VII Remake, Nioh 2, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Doom Eternal are all launching that month.

The biggest Nintendo launch of 2019 to date

Luigi's Mansion 3 may not have succeeded in knocking Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare off of the top of the UK Charts, but the spooky-ooky title h??as still been a huge success, with the Switch rele??ase proving to be Nintendo's biggest launch title of 2019 so far.

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, physical sales of Luigi's new adventure were 140% higher than its 3DS predecessor, with the new sequel also outperforming both The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and Super Mario Maker 2 (though it should be noted Luigi's Mansion 3 did get an extra day of sales, having launched on a Thursday to coincide with Halloween.) As is usually the ca?se, the launch of a new Switch title brought a small sales boost to most other major Switch releases.

Elsewhere in the charts, Obsidian's The Outer Worlds still sits comfortably in the Top Ten, as does Ubisoft's fan-mauled Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. Disney Classic Games: Aladdin & The Lion King made a quiet debut at number 12, while 2K Games' maligned WWE 2K20 began its desc??ent, dropping from number ??3 to number 14.

Modern Warfare is likely to remain the game to beat for some time. The upcoming Pokemon Sword and Shield has the opportunity and ability to do so, though it will be hampered in its ??efforts to reach number 1 by having its sales split into two separate releases.

No window yet

Before this past weekend we knew that Outer Worlds was com??ing to Switch at some point, but now we have a more definitive release window due to a launch press release (thanks to my colleague that pointed this out!).

Here's the line in full: "After much anticipation, Private Division and Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds is now available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (and will be coming to Nintendo Switch in 2020)." It's such a simple statement, but a non-definitive one: who knows if we'll see any delays between now and the eventual release date, but at least people kn??ow not to hold out until Christmas.

So what's the best way to play Outer Worlds right now? Without a doubt it's with Microsoft's Game Pass. In case you forgot Microsoft acquired Obsidian, so while the game is also available on PS4, it's readily available on Game Pass. Odds are you have a free Game Pass flier lying around somewhere (if you don't, here's one!), or can fork over the few bucks to marathon this for a?? month. It's also the perfect game to come back to months down the line when you feel like resubscribing due to the whole "multiple endings/path" thing.

Royal Stumble

Despite the 'net being awash with memeriffic gifs, screengrabs and videos of the less-than-main event state of 2K Games' WWE 2K20, the latest release in the annual wrestling ?sim series still found?? its way into the UK Charts, landing at number three.

The wonky title beat out both MediEvil and The Outer Worlds' physical launches in Blighty to take the top-ranking position, despite being a candidate for one of the year's most disastrous video game launches. 2K Games noted on Friday that it plans to release an "initial" patch to the myriad of problems in about two weeks time. As an aside about The Outer Worlds, a h?elluva lot of our beloved community seem to be digging Obsidian's new intergalactic adventure, which is nice t??o see.

Of course, hardly even a headline by nature of its inevitability, Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare debuted straight in at number one. As noted by GamesIndustry.biz, the new release sold almost 40% more physical copies at launch than last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops IV. And chances are Captain Pri??ce and Co. will be seated at the top of the charts for some time. Watch for our review in the coming days.

Nintendo still hold a presence, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Ring Fit Adventure, and Minecraft for Switch all retaining Top Ten positions. Electronic Arts' Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville also held high r????anking for its second week, slipping slightly to number nine.

Back to the real wasteland

For the uninitiated, when publishers wanted a sure-thing studio to come in and elevate an existing IP, Obsidian was the one developer you called. They rocked The Old Republic for BioWare and continued the Neverwinter Nights series. Look, they made the best modern Fallout game, New Vegas. Our audience even agrees!

In the past nine years they've mostly stuck to the Baldur's Gate-esque Pillars of Eternity series (plus Tyranny), a one-off adventure with a South Park RPG,?? and a joint MMO venture with Allo??ds Team. What I'm saying is: I want more Obsidian in my life.

And with The Outer Worlds, a massive first-person RPG in the same vein as New Vegas, I got it.

The Outer Worlds review

The Outer Worlds (PC, PS4 [reviewed], Switch, Xbox One)
Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
Publisher: Private Division
Released: October 25, 2019 (PC, PS4, XB1) / TBA (Switch)
MSRP: $59.99

If you were expecting something irreverent and subversive that didn't take itself too seriously: congratulations, you're going to love Outer Worlds. Our journey takes us to Halcyon: a perfect society "guaranteed to maximize your productivity." I got immediate Sorry to Bother You vibes from the whole professio??nal servitude angle, ??and one of the first lines of dialogue is "not likely, bootlickers." Oh hell yeah, this is my kind of game.

Naturally, a rebel group sparks conflict at the start of the game's events, and that's where you come in. Said rebel leader cherry-picks one of the many hibernating?? citizens (you), which is how they cleverly justify the character creation process. Said process, mind, is extremely customizable, allowing you to jack up (or down) various parts of your personality, which impacts skills like melee or ranged attacks, tech, stealth, lock-picking, defense, and dialogue-based options.

There's even a (mostly flavor) "aptitude" rating that defines your former career/life. For my first playthrough I was a silver-tongued, crackshot cashier, which is another way of saying I was living my best virtual life. The wh?ole system is rife for replays, which plays into the multiple endings angle. After your avatar is good and ready you’ll jet down to a planet surface to help out (or betray) your benefactors. It's open-ended like that.

It must be said upfront: this is not a fully open world game, and you know what? I'm glad. Zones are broken up into planets or space stati??ons (which you can jet to using your ship), and there isn't one big map to connect them all. Be?cause of this choice, each zone gets its own chance to breathe a little without the stress involved with pixel-hunting icons (or radio towers) on a map.

It helps that my first impression of the initial planet was positive. You can see out into the distant, beautiful horizon, and the segmented approach helps differentiate each area. Due to the isolated nature of the planet-by-planet structure, it's natural to feel cut off from the universe as a whole; like Outer Worlds is smaller than it really is.

Thankfully, Obsidian keeps treks (and load times) to a minimum as it focuses on planet-centric storylines without having to hop across the galaxy for errands. The flow kind of reminds me of the new God of War, moving around to different medium-to-large-sized zones through a hub interface. Your ship, which houses your companions (yes, this is one of my favorite Obsidian things too), is? also home to ADA, your wisecracking AI. It's safe in some respects, keen to not jettison every modern RPG trope.

It's got marauders (evil flesh-eating mercs, classic), lock picking (though thankfully not a minigame this time, just a button prompt), that sort of familiarity. It's comfortable at times. But it also has the classic Obsidian charm, filled to the brim with clandestine political discussions, plenty of (well-timed and funny) outbursts of cursing, and that rusted vibrancy aesthetic they do so well. Although walking around can sometimes feel lifeless especially when so many buildings are closed or layouts repeat /span> that feeling often fades when you see a weird new lifeform or a ship fly by in the sky to r??emind you that you're not alone.

That humor also pays dividends when you're doing the actual RPG bi?ts. This is one of those games where you're often presented with five branching choices, which will spur a lot of save file diversity just to see where it all deviates. You'll see what I mean when you try to talk down a major confrontation and can't do it due to a lack of persuasion ?rating.

The Outer Worlds review

Just like the Bethesda-era Fallout series it draws upon, The Outer Worlds' bread and butter is first-person combat, but with a time-slow ability (that can be tweaked) instead of V.A.T.S. The emphasis on constant motion makes everything feel more action-oriented as a result, which Obsidian doubles down on with a double-tap/click jump dodge (melee is also formidable in Outer Worlds because t?he time-slow mechanic benefits both ranged and close-quarters styles of play). Of course, there's always the non-violent/stealth option, and intere??sting optional "flaws" can pop up after messing up one too many times (like acrophobia if you fall too much).

From a UI perspective, it also isn't a complete mess on consoles in spite of the complexity. The inventory system is clean (with an option to instantly mark items as junk and pawn them off en masse), there's a respec (build change) tool, and best of all, food buffs you for a limited time /span> no more pausing the game to spam 25 ap??ples to recover health.

You can solve conflicts non-violently through your words, murder everyone, extort them, or chastise them and make them apologize for off-handed comments. You'll also have the chance to convince unsuspecting NPCs that you’re a space inspector instead of confronting them upfront, then kill them when they’re walking away. This sort of openness extends all the way through to the end, where exhaustive satisfying epilogues are provided for?? all major characters (at least in my case).

The absolute highlight of Outer Worlds though has to be the companion system. It's no bullshit, shucking any sort of unfun micromanagement or restrictions. Once you meet a companion you can always quest with them anywhere, and they'll constantly chime in with their opinion on the task at hand or open up new quests/avenues of play. They passively buff your skills and carrying capacity by just existing, and while the AI is decent by default, you can customize their basic strategy through menu options. Compan??ions also sport over-exaggerated skills (which are supers, really) and can be fully kitted out with their own inventory, gear, and perks. Plus you can have two with you at all times??!

The Outer Worlds review

Although I did not encounter any crashes on PS4, there is jank. Sometimes th?e game says you're in combat when you clearly aren't, forcing you to retreat a bit (or even fast travel) to sort of clean the errant glitchy pipes and allow you to interact with a key item. Companion powers are shaky too, and sometimes buggy (teleporting them a??cross the field instantly), but they're fun to look at and always connect as a result.

An open world game also has to have open world bugs, right? During my playthrough on PS4, I encountered some frame-skipping (nothing too major, unless you're playing on the max difficulty setting, then it can cause problems), and the game-over screen is super sudden, which is annoying when coupled wi??th an infrequent auto-save system. Loading screens, when they do happen, can approach 30 seconds even on a PS4 Pro.

Despite some nominal issues that might be easier for some to hand-wave than others, Obsidian has out-Fallouted recent Fallout efforts. The Outer Worlds is more limited from a size standpoint compared to a lot of other open world adventures, but it makes up f?or it in charm and a succinct vision without much bloat.

Join the party!

My eyes insisted on staying extra shut this morning, and the culprit is clear: The Outer Worlds.

I traded away a good night's rest in order to comb through the opening planet in Obsidian's just-launched Fallout-as-hell RPG, a choice I suspect many of you made as well. I see you. I see all of you!

Could I have spent less time on the character creator? Absolutely. But also, heck no  my hero's cheekbones need??ed to look just right and, unti??l they did, from every possible angle, I couldn't move on.

Could I have glossed over some of those early side quests in order to kick off the galaxy-spanning adventure sooner? Probably. But then I might've missed recruiting one of the early companions. Half the reason I even play games like The Outer Worlds is to hang out with a rag-tag group of buddies. T?here was also no way I was gonna leave The Frightened Engineer partially c?ompleted in my quest list.

Did I need ?to loot every single drawer, container, and fridge in sight? Technically speaking, no. But then I poured a bunch of bits?? into incremental weapon upgrades, and that fancy new armor I was eying for Parvati wasn't going to pay for itself. There are so many tempting ways to spend money in this game.

The Outer Worlds captures the feeling of Fallout without a lot of the filler

It's still early, but I think The Outer Worlds is going to make a lot of people, myself included, very happy.? Familiar, but not too familiar. Funny, but not in a forced or overbearing way. It's comfy, y'know?

So many never-ended video games this year have asked for their audience's full attention, to the point where if you're busy even for a weekjust to help your poor grandma move! you missed the cool new talked-about thing, and suddenly, you've fallen ?behind schedule. It's a tough feeling to recover from.

I'm relieved knowing that The Outer Worlds isn't a huge, ongoing commitment. I also appreciate that it's not a fully open-world experience because some dude decided that's what every game should strive to be. It seems manageable! Eventually, I'll reach a final choice, try to talk my way through, and see an ending my ending and that??'ll be that. I can move onto my next game without ?an ounce of guilt.

If you're playing The Outer Worlds, cool. Let's hear? it. If you can't yet, also cool. We ca??n still chat.

Preferably in a place you'll remember

I've really got?ten used to new-school game design.

Whenever I play a lengthy RPG, my mind immediately goes to "I need to find the bank so I can store all of these cool items." I went through around 15 hours of The Outer Worlds bef??ore finally realizing: "oh, the world is my bank."

Don't make the same mistake! As soon as you get to your ship/hub (roughly 15 minutes in), use the lockers near the front door to easily store some of your key items. Naturally a??ny stash point will do??, that's just one you're going to be fast traveling to a lot.

If you want to store stuff: basically, go up to the storage unit you want to place your stuff in, and move until a menu comes? up. Press Tr?iangle/Y to initiate a transfer, then a new menu will pop up. Store away!

You can store whatever you want, but as highlighted in the header image, I recommend putting big five weight plus items in there for w??hen you need them. Alternatively, as soon as you leave your ship you can take companions with you to increase your weight capacity, or opt for extra weight perks. Good luck storing the millions of items you'll come across!
