The Penguin starring Colin Farrell will follow Oswald Cobblepot as he tries to take over Gotham City's criminal underworld shortly after the events of Matt Reeves' The Batman left a power vacuum. Y?ou can expect the same stunning imagery that permeated the film, but the titular caped crusader �and his billionaire alter-ego �will not be showing up to rain on Penguin's parade.

In a preview from a recent interview with GamesRadar's Total Film magazine, the director of the most recent Batman outing and Executive Producer of The Penguin, talke??d about his reasoning for focusing solely on The Penguin's c??haracter.

"I’m a point-of-view filmmaker," Reeves said, "When I’m doing a Batman story, Batman and Bruce is going to be the main point of view. To explore the rogues gallery, they could never get the real estate we can do i??n a series. So Batman is in thi?s [show] only as a sense that he’s a presence. You’re aware that all of these events began because of the Riddler, but the Riddler doesn’t appear and Batman doesn’t appear."

Still, Reeves mentions the team did briefly talk about b??ringing Batman into the fold.

"I’d ??rather take the Band-Aid off now. We did talk about all that but we felt the best way to do this was to go on a grand exploration of a guy grabbing for power in this momen??t."

While Batman's absence at a time when Gotham's criminal underbelly is going through such important changes might strike fans as very out-of-character, Reeves' point is ?understandable to a degree. Also, it's undeniable that Robert Pattinson's absence will not only help the spotlight not get stolen from its titular Penguin, but also help keep the budget on a much more TV-series-friendly range.

To make up for the absence of Batman as Penguin's main foil, the show will feature Cristin Milioti's Sofia Falcone. She's the daughter of the late Carmine Falcone who's fresh o?ut of Arkham State Hospital and ready to throw her hat? in the ring for the control of Gotham's crime world.

The Penguin will run for 8 episodes and premieres on September 19 on H?BO Max.

The Penguin, the upcoming DC spin-off show, has finally received a release date. Based on Matt Reeves�The Batman, the show will be focusing on the villain Colin Farrell portrays in the movie. The Penguin show will be arriving in September, as revealed by Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max, in an interview with Variety.

Not so long after the movie’s release, The Penguin spin-off series was announced. The show will continue the story after the events from The Batman movie and will focus on Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot’s rise in the criminal underworld of Gotham, and become the Penguin. The series is also going to lay the foundations for The Batman: Part II which is scheduled to come out in 2026.

The show will see Farell return to reprise the titular character, and Cristin Milioti has joined the cast as Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Carmine Falcone, the late king of Got??ham’s underworld. The ??Penguin will have eight episodes, with Lauren LeFranc serving as the showrunner.

While The Penguin is a spin-off DC show, it will be considered as part of The Batman’s universe rather than t?he upcoming DC rebuild happening. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has clarified in the past that all movies and shows that do not follow the main continuity timeline of the DC Universe, will be released with ??the DC Elseworlds label.

Matt Reeves�The Batman: Part II and Todd Philipps�Joker: Folie à Deux are prime examples of projects that will be carrying the Elseworlds tag, keeping them separate for the overarching main storyline of DC, which kicks off with the release of Creature Commandos, an adult animated show releasing in late 2024.
