Had things gone differently, Frogwares' The Sinking City would've trucked neatly along as one of the many decent but imperfect gaming renditions of Lovecraft's works. Though this wasn't meant? to be, the developer is now finally in control of the game, with good news for its immediate f?uture.

Notably, the controversy over the rights to The Sinking City has only come to a close very recently, with Frog??wares regaining ful??l publishing rights to the game almost five years after it first came out. To celebrate the occasion, fans can expect an all-new version of the game that integrates all the existing DLC, patches out bugs, and smooths out its performance. The new version of The Sinking City will be free for all owners of the game, and those who aren't keen on losing their saves will have the opportunity to keep playing the old vers?ion, should they choose to do so.

What's next for The Sinking City? And how will saves transfer?

As per Frogwares' latest announcement, the new build of The Sinking City includes "the bugfixes and optimizations previously released for the game on other platforms. Essentially, it's a patch. The reason we are calling it a new version is to emphasize the fact that it will exist alongside the current version for some time." The goal is to release the new version of The Sinking City around ??"mid-January," and it's go?ing to be free for all owners of the game.

Though the old saves will not be compatible with the new build, Frogwares is going to pr??epare new save files so that players can continue playing roughly from where they last stopped, in the old build. "However, since these are our saves, we won’t be able to match your previous progress 100%, so p??lease expect some of your previous choices, inventory items and skills to be different," says Frogwares.

Curiously, Frogwars has also hinted at some possible visual and gameplay improvements coming down the line, though players shouldn't expect any of those for the mid-January retrofit. Its main goal, instead, is to consolidate all Steam versions of The Sinking City under Frogwares' own banner, to release the three pieces of DLC that are available on other platforms (Merciful Madness, Chicago Organ Grinder, and the XP Boost), and patch out issues. The DLC will be sold separately for owners of the base game, but the Necronomicon Edition owners will be getting ?them for free, though potentially at a slightly later date.

The newer DLCs, Worshippers of the Necronomicon and the Investigator Pack, will be compatible with Frogwares' new version of The Sinking City once it comes out.

Finally, those who purchased the standalone Gamesplanet build of The Sinking City may end up getting Ste??am keys all of their own, though Frogwares isn't yet 100% sure on this front: "We are looking into it," says the blog post.

[Upd?ate: Frogwares' CEO, Wael Amr has provided Destructoid with the following comment:

"We've seen a lot of support online from people saying they were waiting for the game to be back under our control before they buy it, so that has been very heart-warming to see. Our team is dealing with so much given what is still happening in Ukraine, so this type of? response truly helps a lot. We're also happy that we can now fully control the destiny of our creation and what we might do next in this setting."

Via a post on Twitter, developer Frogwares has announced that they are now the sole publisher for 2019’s The Sinking City. As a result, they will be updating storef??ronts with the latest version of the game in the coming weeks.

Back in 2021, Frogwares got embroiled in a dispute with Nacon, the publisher of the game for PC platforms, over copyright and withheld royalties. The resulting lawsuit saw The Sinking City pulled from PC, Xbox One, and PS4 storefronts. It was then reinstated to Steam before being pulled again because it was allegedly just a hacked version of the g?ame put together by Nacon. It was a messy situ??ation.

It’s currently unclear what led to the resolution of the dispute. On Steam, the developer mer??ely says, “We're happy to finally put this whole thing behind us, and we look forward to sharing more news about the future of the franchise down the line. We’ve reached out for comment, and will update this ar??ticle if we receive clarification.

Frogwares warns that saves from the old PC version of the game will not be compatible with the updated version they will be releasing. They say that the old version will still be available but only for a limited time and suggest that you should finish any ongoing playthrough before February 28, 2024. They also plan on releasing a new DLC named Merciful Madness, which will only be compa??tible with the new version ??of the game.

While Frogwares is most renowned for their work on the Sherlock Holmes series of games, The Sinking City is a detective game set in the world as envisioned by H.P. Lovecraft. In particular, it takes place sometime after The Shadow Over Innsmouth and deals with the fallout of that story. It nails the eldritch creeping horror of the author whil??e encasing it in a detective adventure game.

As an enjoyer of H.P. Lovecraft’s works, I really got into The Sinking City on PS5, but I got too embroiled in sidequests and eventually lost interest. I then picked it up again later, got further, and then the same thing happened. I s?hould probably finish it before I forget what ?was happening.

The Sunken City

There appears to be no end in sight for the debacle surrounding Lovecraft-inspired title The Sinking City. Following the mystery-horror's removal from Steam - tr??iggered by a DMCA request by developer Frogwares - pub??lisher Nacon has responded to accusations that it pirated a copy of the product from another store in order to re-sell on Valve's platform.

"Nacon hereby wishes to set the record straight regarding these unjustified accusations," said the French publisher. "Nacon is contractually the sole exclusive distributor of The Sinking City game on Steam. Nacon has contributed to the financing of development and the payment of royalties to Frogwares to the tu??ne of 8.9 million euros to date (including the full payment for a version of the game for Steam), making the global investment far above 10 million euros when integrating the marketing costs. Contrary to Frogwares’ allegations, Nacon has paid all amounts due".

Nacon goes on to address the issue of royalties, as well as Frogwares' decision to actively discourage sales of the recent Steam edition of The Sinking City.

"Despite this blocking situation created exclusively by Frog?wares, Nacon has allowed players to access the game on Steam while still expressly indicating the ownership of Frogwares’ rights to the game. Frogwares will also receive the royalties generated by Steam sales. By encouraging the gaming community via Twitter not to buy the game on Steam, Frogwares is once again sabotaging our investments in the game. N?acon obviously regrets this conflict, for which it is not responsible, and for which it did everything possible to avoid".

This latest statement is just another step forward in an increasingly combustible situation regarding numerous disputes as it pertains to the development, ownership, and sale of The Sinking City. As each party projects new statemen??ts and takes active steps toward laying claim to the psychological horror title, it seems ever more clear that the situation is once again headed toward legal proceedings - an option that Nacon hints at in its new statement.

"Nacon reserves the right to take legal action against Frogwares for its aggressive and prejudicial comments," closes the publisher. "Frogwares has been careful not to indicate that all court decisions in the dispute between Nacon and Frogwares have thus far b??een favorable to Nacon."

As of this writing, The Sinking City - as published by Frogwares - remains for sale on PS5, Nintendo Switch, and all non-Steam PC outlets. Meanwhile, the PS4 and Xbox One edition of The Sinking City  - as published by Nacon - remains available for purchase? on the respective PlayStation and Microsoft stores.

Lovecraft adventure remains swamped in controversy

[Update: Frogware??s has issued?? a new statement regarding its issuing of the DMCA.

"A DMCA notice proved to be our most effective tool to give us time to gain further potential evidence and to also start the required and lengthy additional legal processes to prevent this from happening again," the developer told Vice. "We are aware that a final ruling on whether Frogwares are obligated to deliver a Steam version has yet not been made and could take years. As it stands, we have an appeals court ruling saying, until further notice Frogw??ares do not need to deliver a Steam version to Nacon. In the meantime, Nacon decided to take justice into their own hands and release a? pirated build."

"We are also aware that the DMCA claim on this Steam version may only be a temporary fix and that the game may make a comeback - in this form or another. Providing partners lik??e Valve with finalised rulings and third-party verified evidence so they can make their final decision takes time and resources. If in the meantime they decide they have to continue selling the game, we can only respect that while continuing to speak to them and provide them with more information."

As it stands, The Sinking City - as published by Frogwares - remains for sale on PS5, Nintendo Switch, and non-Steam PC outlets. The PS4 and Xbox One edition of The Sinking City  - as published? by Nacon - remain available on their respective PlayStation and Microsoft stores.]

Original article:

In the latest update on the ongoing debacle surrounding The Sinking City, Steam has once again pulled Frogware??s' horror-mystery from its storefront, following the developer's issuing of a D??MCA against publisher Nacon, with whom it is embroiled in an increasingly ugly legal dispute.

As reported by Vice, Frogwares issued the DMCA following on from the Ukrainian studios' recent allegations that Nacon pirated a copy of the 2019 release from a digital storefront, before re-submitting the game for sale on the Steam platform. Earlier this week, Frogwares released an in-depth video explaining these particularly seriou???s accusations.

"The Sinking City has been in dispute in French courts for a while," Valve's VP of marketing Doug Lombardi told Vice. "An interim decision last fall appeared to give Nacon the right to distribute the game on Steam while the litigation proceeded. However, today we received a DMCA take-do?wn notice for the ve?rsion that Nacon recently shipped, so we have responded to that notice."

This is not the first time The Sinking City has been removed from the Steam store. Back in August 2020, Frogwares removed the title itself, protesting numerous claims against Nacon (then Bigben Interactive) that included copyright dispute and the alleged withholding of royalties. The Sinking City would eventually return to Steam following a Parisian court's ruling that Frogwares had acted unlawfully by removing the? game from sale.

In a statement posted earlier this week, Nacon suggested that Frogwares was attempting to "revise the terms of the contract to their sole advantage". "It's easy to play the victim," said the French publisher. "All we seek is that Frogwares respect i??ts commitments both in the contract and as demanded by the courts."

As of this writing, The Sinking City is unava??ilable to purchase on Steam. This status remains likely for some time, as the ong??oing dispute becomes ever-more provocative and combustible.

All's fair in Lovecraft and War?

The furor surrounding mystery-horror title The Sinking City continues to get uglier with each passing day, as both publish?er Nacon (formerly Bigben Interactive) and developer Frogwares continue to disput?e ownership rights and numerous other contract issues.

Just before the weekend, Frogwares asked customers not to purchase The Sinking City, which had been recently re-uploaded to Steam, stating that it had no hand in the development of this particular version. Yesterday, the Ukrainian developer went one step further, openly alleging that Nacon had, in fact, hacked a copy of the 2019 title from another digital storefront, altered it??s code, and submitted it for sale via the Steam platform.

Frogwares has gone as far as to release a detailed video which it claims shows exactly how Nacon "cracked, hacked, changed [the] game's code and content and illegally uploaded" The Sinking City back onto Steam, without Frogwares' knowledge or permission. This accusation, alongside the video in question, can be viewed on Frogwares' website.

"In order to achieve the removal of this protection and checking system, Nacon modified both the game executable and the config files inside the packages," alleges F??rogwares in its statement. "We believe Nacon did this to hide the fraudulent exploitation of the game on Steam but also on other portals which they may be planning to send the game to. Nacon wants Frogwares or anyone, including the French Justice, to? never know the true scope of their exploitation of the game."

Nacon also released a statement yesterd??ay, responding to Frogware??s' earlier complaint.

"We regret that Frogwares persists in disrupting the release of The Sinking City," said the publisher on Steam. "It was Frogwares who came to Nacon to request financing for the development of the game, an??d to date, more than 10 million euros have been paid to Frogwares by Nacon. It was Frogwares that relied on our marketing and promotion teams, representing thousands of hours of w??ork and several million euros worth of investment."

"Now that the game has been fully developed, and published, largely thanks to Nacon's money and work, Frogwares would like to revise the terms of the contract to the?ir sole advantage. It's easy to play the victim, but all we seek is that Frogwares respect its commitments both in the contract and as demanded by the courts."

While the debacle surrounding The Sinking City has been? ongoing for some time - and has already been placed before the judicial system once before - the events and accusations of the past week are particularly incendiary, and it would not be surprising at all to see Nacon and Frogwares return to the courts again befo?re this particular situation reaches its conclusion, if ever.

The nightmare continues...

Developer Frogwares has put out a succinct statement asking users not to purchase the Steam edition of The Sinking City, which recently returned to the PC retail platform following a period of commotion over the title's licensing issues. According to the Ukrainian studio, the S?team edition of the 2019 mystery horror title was not developed by them, though further details are not yet forthcoming.

The Sinking City - a Lovecraft-i?nspired period piece of madness and intrigu??e - was pulled from digital sale by the developer following fallout with publisher Nacon (then Big Ben Interactive). Frogwares filed suit against its publisher over a laundry list of allegations pertaining to ownership rights, marketing promises, and payment delays. In October 2020, a court ruled that Frogwares had acted unlawfully in pulling the title from release. The Sinking City would return to digital storefronts in January 2021, only to be pulled from Steam again in double-quick time.

Over on Steam, users are claiming that the latest re-up of The Sinking City is an old build of the game, and does not include access to DLC, post-release updates, cloud-saves, or achievements. Frogwares insists that it will follow up with more news on the situation "soon." In the meantime, The Sinking City remains? available on Steam, the Nintendo e??Shop, and the PlayStation and Microsoft stores.

They all float down here

Developer Frogwares is currently beavering away at the Nintendo Switch port their gruesome horror adventure The Sinking City, which la?unched back in June on PS4, PC and Xbox One. To whet fans' appetites (pun intended) the dev team has uploaded a trailer of the port in action.

For those of you who would like a refresher, The Sinking City is a creepy third-person adventure set in the 19??20's, and follows the exploits of troubled private investigator Charles W. Reed as investigates several disappearances in the fictional town of Oakmont, Massachusetts. Along the way, Reed's investigations are hampered by his own personal demons, some very actual demons, and a deluge of floodwater, the result of a torrential downpour.

As you can see from the video, the Switch port of The Sinking City is shaping up pretty nicely. The Switch port will feature an overhauled control system befitting the Joy-Con, as well as various tweaks to improve the shooting mechanics, as well as the NPC AI. Development must be ticking along, as Frogwares state that they will be ready to ann??ounce a release date next week - a date said to be "sooner rather than later".

The Sinking City is available now on PS4, PC and Xbox One.

Where does madness leave off and reality begin?

The Sinking City is without a doubt a love letter to H. P. Lovecraft's work. Even going as far as being set within the same universe, specifically The Shadow over Innsmouth, and directly references those events and plenty more from Lovecraft's tales. However, it's not just a clear love for the source material that makes The Sinking City great. The atmosphere and world building of Oakm??ont, Massachusetts are just as deep as its fictional waters, with a story and murky sense of morality to match in the best possible ways.

You're placed in the shoes of Charles Reed, a great war veteran turned private eye who is losing his grip on sanity. He arrives in Oakmont looking for the source of his chaotic visions and is quickly tasked with also solving the seemingly supernatural flooding that is taking place in Oakmont. Between dodging gunfire from simple crooks and encounters with nightmarish creatures, you'll wade through the darkness and insanity of Oakmont's citizens and unravel an intrinsic mystery only fitting from the folks that brought us the Sherlock Holmes games.

The Sinking City - Librarian

The Sinking City (PC [reviewed], PS4, Xbox One, Switch)
Developer: Frogwares
Publisher: Bigben Interactive
Released/Releasing: June 27, 2019 (PC via Epic Games Store, PS4, Xbox One), TBA, 2019 (Switch), TBA, 2020 (PC via Steam)
MSRP: $59.99

From the moment you arrive in Oakmont, you'll begin to notice outside of the obvious flooding and decay around you a constant feeling of wariness and alienation from its citizens. Everyone refers you to you as a “newcomer” in a?? condescending manner and the inhabitants are just as odd as their flooded surroundings. From the unique facial features of the innsmouthers and Throgmorten family, to even the city librarian who's lips are literally sealed shut because of a “local custom.” All of the different groups, families, and factions of Oakmont have their own prejudices, social politics, and even their own unique dia?lect.

Combine this with the hostile open world and hopeless atmosphere and it makes for some believable and great world building. To go along with the hopeless atmosphere is a tale of desperation for one's own sanity and plenty of gray morality decisions. Choices are never simply black and white in The Sinking City. In one instance, for example, I was given the choice to either side with and join a group who seemingly had good intentions and were helping the poor, but, behind the scenes, were also up to some shady and violent stuff (they even kidnapped someone I was looking for). Or I could side with someone who had a clear vendetta and racial prejudice towards them, along with an extreme solution for dealing with them. Al??l while having useful information and details on the person I'm trying to find.

To further aid this, the voice acting is solid and the detective gameplay is the best aspect of The Sinking City. The “Mind Palace” makes a welcome return from the Sherlock Holmes games and works well here when piecing together observations and giving you more details on the tough calls you'll need to make. Most of the actual detective gameplay boils do?wn to finding clues around the environment and utilizing various archives around the city such as police records, the library, city hall, and various others to either find specific people or locations.

There aren't any obvi?ous waypoints to guide you along, you'll constantly rely on your map as you search for specific street names or locations. There's also a fair amount of side cases to solve and even collectibles to find around the city. However, the more you explore Oakmont the more you'll begin to notice how familiar it all is due to extensive re-use of various interior areas. B??y the time I was wrapping up the story and hunting collectibles, I knew the layout of most “new” areas I was going into simply because I'd already been to a place exactly like it, numerous times.

The Sinking City - Red Queen

Some of the exterior areas around the city also share the same issues. In one instance, I was looking for a specific factory and all I could find were numerous “Suits and Topcoat” stores scattered around the same district, sometimes even multiple on the same street. Stuff like this is pretty minor, admittedly, but it was certainly noticeable. Combine that with the fact there isn't a whole lot to do within the open world outside of collectible hunting or stumbling on the odd side case and you'll find yourself with very little reason to not be fast traveling constantly. Especially wi??th most investigations having you go all over the city from one end to the other.

The low point of The Sinking City, though, is pretty much any time you're in combat, which is fairly often due to plenty of “infested” areas around the city filled with creatures known as “wild beasts." As for the combat itself: the animations are stiff, the AI is dumb, and the gun sound effects are laughably weak. Early on you'll be better off fleeing from enemies, as when they do manage to hit you, they can take a huge chunk of your ??health (at least on the normal difficulty). You'll also need to constantly keep an eye on your sanity bar, as staying in combat too long or seeing too much awfulness up close will cause it to drain in a matter of seconds. If completely drained...you'll die by self-infliction.

The Sinking City - Combat

Thankfully, resources are plentiful around the city and you'll be able to craft a plethora of items within your inventory such as ammo, traps, throwables, health kits, and drugs to keep your sanity in check. I know some people are going to scoff at the sound of crafting, but it's nothing too ba??d outside of a few clicks in an inventory menu. On the plus side, a lot of this can be tailored within the customizable difficulty options. Want to make the crappy combat as painless as possible (both literally and fi??guratively)? You can lower the difficulty specifically in regards to combat without affecting the difficulty of the detective gameplay.

Overall?, as much as I adore the story and atm?osphere of The Sinking City, it definitely feels like a budget title at times. If you can get past the weak combat, harmless j?ank, and enjoy a solid detective experience that won't hold your hand and throw tough choices your way, you shouldn't pass up on it. Even more so if you're a fan of Lovecraft. Because as the Old Ones were, the Old Ones are, and the ?Old Ones shall be and that's a good? enough reason for me!

Looks wet out

We are just a day out from the release of Frogware's creepy-as-hell looking mystery adventure The Sinking City. Taking its influence from the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, The Sinking City is a mu?rky tale of psychological a??nd paranormal torment in a sleepy American town.

Set in the 1920s, our s??tory concerns troubled private investigator Charles W. Reed, who visits the equally troubled town ??of Oakmont, Massachusetts following a series of bizarre happenings. These include the mental breakdown of many citizens, strange sightings in the night, and a persistent, ever-rising flood that threatens to drown the entire berg.

As Reed, players will investigate these weird happenings, attempting to make sense of some grim crime scenes while trying not to fall foul of his own demons, eagerly encouraged by the world's oppressive atmosphere and creepy locals. If you want to hear more about this dark adventure, then you can check out our own Dan Roemer's review right here.

The Sinking City launches June 27 on PS4, PC and Xbox One. A ?Switch port is scheduled for 2019.

Tentacles 'cos Lovecraft

Another dark trailer has been released by publisher BigBen Interactive for upcoming third-person adventure The Sinking City, which?? arrives on PS4, PC and Xbox One in a little over a months time.

Developed by Frogwares, The Sinking City is a creepy, story-driven ??adventure based upon the works o??????????????????????????f writer H.P. Lovecraft. This short preview, "Rotten Reality," gives us a look at the bleak, flooded city of Oakmont, as inv?estigator Charles W. Reed checks out a catalogue of weird and morbid sights that have been reported in the area.

Though Reed has arrived in Oakmont armed with his deductive skills, survival instincts and a trusty side-arm, he (and? the player) will also need to maintain a grip on themselves throughout the journey. The gumshoe's sanity is a legitimate in-game resource, which can be utilised when gathering evidence, or investigating one of many peculiar and macabre c?rime scenes. A complete loss of sanity, and it's farewell to reality.

The Sinking City launches June 27 on PS4, PC and Xbox One.

Developer wants more breathing room for players

March is a busy month for video games. We've just gotten Dead or Alive 6, ToeJam & Earl, and now Devil May Cry 5. Before long, The Division 2, Sekiro, and Yoshi's Crafted World will join that list. If you're wondering if I have a Simpsons gif to illustrate ho??w many of us are feeling, why yes, yes I do.

The Sinking City, another promising but likely to be overlooked game, was scheduled to release in the middle of all that. I've liked the look of ??Frogwares' supernatural horror detective game, but there are limits. There are only so many hours in the day, and March would've bee??n rough.

Thankfully, Frogwares and Bigben Games are moving The Sinking City to a "less crowded time frame." The new launch date on PC, PS4, and Xbox One is June 27, 201?9. It was the right call.

At least for me personally, The Sinking City stands a much better chance in June. The month will see a few notable releases like Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled and Judgment, but otherwise, it's much less jammed. In other good news, I just saw this screenshot depicting giant eels and I am all about that.

Releasing this month

For the past few weeks, the March release that has been at the top of my most-wanted list is Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. I've been amped up on that game since it was first revealed in 2017. But there is a second game coming out this month that also has me excited. That game...is Yoshi's Crafted World. However, there is a third ga--

You know what? For the sake of brevity, I should skip over all the other games and dive right into The Sinking City. The detective game doesn't have the most buzz surrounding it ahead of its launch, but it really should be a game you keep in mind when considering how you'll spend your gaming budget this month. In the past, the developers have given players a glimpse at the story and style of the title, and now we're getting a closer look at the investigation aspects of it too. ?;

I think it just jumped up a spot on my list. The Sinking City re?leases on March 21, 2019, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

This cinematic trailer sure sets the mood

I thought I could handle spiders, but this latest video for The Sinking City has me questioning my resolve thanks to a fast-moving figure lurking just out of the protagonist's sight. Ominous webbed hands, an ocean in the sky, and tentacles that connect to some unspeakable horror or another all make for a darn good cinematic trailer. I'm glad this Lovecraft-inspired investigation game is moving forward.

The waterlogged 1920s setting looks like a supernatural delight. "Once flourishing and industrial, Oakmont was devastated by a vast flood which submerged ha??lf the town, and led to cases of mass hysteria. According to local inhabitants, the ocean exerted some sort of evil and perverse influence."

I'm also pleased there's separation between this and Cyanide's Call of Cthulhu. That's due at the end of October, while The Sinking City is lookin?g at a March 21, 2019 launch on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Formerly known as Call of Cthulhu

As is typical of the PC Gaming Show we're getting a cl??oser look at games that we knew about -??- but this one has been MIA for quite some time.

Formerly known as Call of Cthulhu, development for Frogwares' The Sinking City is still progressin??g, though no real updates were given as to the timeline. But we got a new video!
