Video game remakes are all the rage nowadays, and with the Fallout series enjoying a boon in popularity thanks to the Amazon TV show, some might think Bethesda should put out a remake of one of the older Fallout games. Especially since Fallout 5 won't be a thing for a very, very, very long time. Surprisingly, Bethesda's own Todd Howard has shot down the possibility of remaking either of the first two Fallout games.

Earlier this week, Howard spoke with YouTuber MrMattyPlays about the future of the Fallout series (via VGC), where he was asked if Bethesda would ever remake the original Fallout games. Those first two games are quite different to their successors, being isometric turn-based RPGs. Ever since Bethesda bought the IP from InterPlay Productions, though, the Fallout games have been action-RPGs with real-time com?bat se?t in open worlds.

//youtu.be/2ew8LQFGNWU?si=trjRj7Ennjaa3OeT

Newer fans more familiar with the current games may not find those first two Fallout titles as appealing, so Howard was asked if Bethesda has ever considered updating or modernising them. Turns out the answer is no, and it's because, according to Howard, "the main priority for us is to make sure they’re available and you can still play them" (you can hear his comments from the 21:05 mark in the video above). As he pointed out, the first two Fallout games are currently on PC via Steam, so it's not like they're a nightmare to track down. They're also very cheap, both costing only $9.99/£7.99, and you don't need a super po?werful PC to run them.

Howard also suggested that any sort of major update to those early Fallout games would risk sanding off some of their charm: "I would ne?ver want to paste over some of that [charm] with "Well, we changed how this works so it’s more modern". So as long as you can download it, as long as it loads up and runs, I think I’d like people to experience it the way it was."

I honestly respect this approach to ensuring games can be played as originally intended. Even if the older games are a bit dated, it's important that they remain available for the sake of preservation. Howard did add that console ports of Fallout 1 and 2 aren't a priority eith?er, which is a bit of a shame, but such an effort would admittedly require a lot of time and resources. As Howard put it, "You have to ask yourself "Is that where we want to put our time right now or is it best played the way it was on PC?" and I think right now the best way to play it is on a PC [with a] mouse and keyboard."

If Bethesda would rather ensure its older games are simply available, rather than remaking them, this should hopefully mean the Fallout team is putting all its energy into new entries as well as more Fallout 76 content. Even so, Fallout 5 won't be a thing until The Elder Scrolls 6 has launched, and that game also lacks a release da?te.

Speaking at the premiere of Amazon's Fallout show in Los Angeles, Bethesda's Todd Howard admitted he'll likely turn down any pitches for a TV adaptation of The Elder Scrolls. Not only that, but he was initially against the idea of a Fallout TV show.

When asked by IGN if other Bethesda properties will see similar adaptations in the wake of Fallout, Howard revealed there's nothing in the works at the moment, adding, "Everybody asks, like, about Elder Scrolls, and I keep saying no also. And I would approach those—I'??ll probably say no."

This may seem baffling since video game adaptations are all the rage nowadays, plus Elder Scrolls is a very popular franchise. However, Howard explained how he rejected pitches for a Fallout show, as well as a movie, for a?bout a decade. Amazon's adaptation only became about because he hit things off with Jonathan Nolan, who serves? as an executive producer on the show.

Howard loved Nolan's work as a writer on movies like The Dark Knight and Interstellar, and after meeting and speaking with him, Howard "felt like, 'hey, do you wanna do this? I'd like to approach it like it's another entry in the games??.' Like, let's do a new location, new story??, let him and his crazy lunatic people he works with kind of do what they do."

It very much sounds like Howard doesn't want to make an Elder Scrolls show just for the sake of it. He felt the same way about Fallout, adding, "I think this r??eally came out of, 'we think things are aligning to do a high-qua?lity job.' It wasn't forced. It was kind of a natural relationship and 'hey, this sounds really cool.'"

This news may be disappointing to some, but at least this means if Howard ever changes his mind (which he doesn't rule out), it'll be because he's found the right creative partner for an Elder Scrolls show. Fallout may have required something of a 'stars aligning' moment for it to come to be, but Howard's insistence on letting it happen naturally seems to have paid off, with the Fallout show getting near rave reviews from critics. You can watch all eight episodes right now? if you want as long as you ha?ve access to Amazon Prime Video.

Last week saw the exciting new trailer for the upcoming Fallout show. While the adaptation is going to be telling its own story, you may be wondering whether it might touch on Fallout 5's possible narrative, even accidentally. However, Todd Howard has made sure that h?asn't happened.

In a recent interview with Den of Geek (as spotted by VGC), the show's executive producer Jonathan Nolan clarified whether the TV series is, to some extent, Fallout 5. Nolan says a conversation between him and Todd discussed the idea of the show being a part of the overall Fallout universe, rather than being a re?telling ?of one of the game's stories.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSFscmnEBOw

Todd Howard then said he made sure the showrunners didn't do certain things. He said he told the crew, "don't do this, because we're going to do that in Fallout 5." There's even a joke about how the adaptation is almost like Fallout 6. But the consensus ??is that the show is its own story and doesn't tread on anything that's come before or after it in terms of arc.

Speaking of Fallout 5...

When Bethesda confirmed the next Fallout game was currently being worked on, I think it's safe to assume people thought it was too early to make such an announcement. Starfield was still very much in development at the time, and we still have absolutely no idea what's going on with The Elder Scrolls 6 since that 2018 E3 tease.

In short: don't expect Todd to start giving away too much about F5 or TES6 anytime soon. I think he's still coasting on the (ahem) success of Starfield, but hopefully, th??e stud??io is making some headway on the new projects.

In the meantime, Fallout will be airing on Apri?l 11 via Amazon Prime Vi??deo.

The numerous ways you can tinker with the space-faring RPG are only going to increase, but for ??now, how about one that lets director Todd Howard's face literally shine a light on the situation?

Over on Nexus Mods, user GeraldMods pays a fitting tribute to Mr. Skyrim himself by replacing the regular flashlight in Starfield with Howard's own visage. For seemingly no other re??ason than it being "funny," this mod allows you to see the face of Bethesda wherever darkness reigns. You know, if you're into that sort of thing.

Over the weekend, those of you who bought the Premium Edition of Starfield have no doubt been glued to your Xbox or PC. In fact, you're probably not even reading this article. It's just us lowly peons left who have to wait until Wednesday to play. The reviews have been coming in thick and fast. If you're like me, you've probably been trying to avoid opinion pieces about the game. Suffice it to say, if you don't hear from me after Wednesday, please don't send help. Starfield will release fully on September 6 for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game ?Pass.

In the closing days before?? the game was released, Bethesda's own Todd Howard took to the community to express his gratitude at the loyalty and enthusiasm fans were showing.

In a recent post on Reddit, Mr. Skyrim himself wanted to personally thank the Starfield sub for all their support. His heartfelt message to the fans shows how grateful Howard is? to witness suc??h a dedicated following grow over the years.

He goes on to say that the Starfield and Bethesda in general fanbase contains "gaming’s smartest fans??," adding that the long-awaited sci-fi RPG has been a "labor of love" for him and?? his team.

Maybe we CAN explore space together

Read Howard's message however you want. Some may chortle a bit about how he refers to gamers especially Reddit users as being smart. We've long known about the divides among the community and some of the questionable opinions of a vocal minority. But Starfield's director evidently sees through that. We obvi?ously don't know how sincere Howard was when he wrote that message, but given his passion for the new Bethesda game (especially considering he pitched it in 2013), the man's allowed to gush a little.

The reviews for Starfield are coming in all the time. But?? for those of us who have to wait until September 6 to play it, we might want to avoid social me?dia for the next few days.

Among all this Starfield talk, it's easy to forget that The Elder Scrolls 6 is even a thing (maybe). It's been five years since we were treated to a brief tease of the?? next installment in Bethesda's flagship series, and the face of the studio seems to reg?ret being too hasty with things.

In a recent interview with GQ, Mr. Skyrim himself, Todd Howard, says he me have been a bit too quick to announce TES6, adding, "I probably wou??ld've announced it more casually."

//youtu.be/OkFdqqyI8y4

Of course, the interviewer asks whether Howard can divulge any further details about The Elder Scrolls 6. Naturally, the director isn't saying anything, though he does say that the upcoming RPG does have a codename. He also says that he and the team want the next TES ga??me to? "fill that role of the ultimate fantasy-world simulator."

So when is it co-

When's it coming out, I hear you ask? Again, nobody can really say. As a sidenote, Howard does make a comment about how he wants to keep making games, with no plans to retire any time soon. He e??ven likens his career path to Nintendo's own Shigeru Miyamoto, who's now in his early 70s.

It's at this point that the GQ interviewer offers their own speculation, saying that The Elder Scrolls 6 may not be out until Todd Howard reaches 60. Given that his Wikipedia page has him down as being either 52 or 53, this means TES6 might still be a good seven or eight years off.

Obviously, that's just speculation. Although recent rumors suggest the long-awaited follow-up to Skyrim might be at least five years away. In any case, Be??thesda definitely seemed to have done itself a disservice by announcing it so soon.

Unfortunately, no actual details on the mode were provided. However, simple confirmation of the NG+ existing in Starfield is pretty exciting as it would be the first Bethesda Game Studios title to feature the mode. The NewGame Plus mod added NG+ support for Fall??out 4, but otherwise, it has just been a highly requested feature.

According to the interview with GQ, your skill traits and backstory perks when creating a character will add a unique and exciting twist on New Game Plus and incentivize continued and ??repeat play.

Even more content for Starfield with New Game Plus

Gamescom has given us an idea of how long we can expect to spend in Starfield. Bethesda's Head of Publishing, Pete Hines, even mentioned we could potentially spend hundreds of hours in a Starfield playthrough.

I'm very curious about exactly how New Game Plus will work. In an open-world adventure with over 1,000 planets to explore, a single playthrough will surely have plenty of content. I'm excited to see what sort of new features or content will be available by going on the journey again. Either way, now that I know Starfield has a New Game Plus mode, perhap??s?? I won't spend hours going back and forth on the starting traits I choose.

I suppose we'll know soon enough. Starfield releases on September 6 on PC and Xbox Series X|S. It will also be a day-one title on Xbox Game Pass. Players who pre-ordered the Premium Edition will get early access to Starfield on September 1.

During the Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023 stream, two cool dudes—Todd Howard and Geoff Keighley—stood on stage and discussed Starfield.

"People have been wondering what the main questline is going to be after you create your character," Geoff explained to Todd, highlighting the deep character customization system in Starfield. "I saw eve?n someone on the internet this week created you I think, did you see that? Someone tweeted out a picture that they had somehow figured out to get you in there."

Todd laughed, then followed up with "I see a lot of things on the internet...I'm not sur?e that's real."

So that got me wondering: Did someone actually make Todd Howard in Starfield? After doing some searching, I was able to find this image of what appeared to be a pretty accurate portrayal of Todd Howard in Starfield:

[caption id="attachment_398417" align="alignnone" width="640"]Todd Howard Starfield photoshop Image via @sergioodoardi on Twitter[/caption]

It looks like Todd Howard was right

As great as it looks, Todd Howard was right. It's not real. Even though it may look like a detailed version of Todd Howard in Starfield, it's just a fake. More than likely just a really good Photoshop. As @FabianoLPeres on Twitter pointed out, the hair?? shaders that we've seen from videos highlighting the character creation simply do not match up. Don't get me? wrong, the hair shaders look great and very detailed—but not to this extreme.

Also, the Twitter user that first posted the Todd Howard in Starfield image, @Sergioodoardi, has posted another Starfield character creation fake: Commander Shepard from Mass Effect. Ho?wever, in this image, it's a lot more obvious that thi??s is just intended as a funny photoshop.

With the Early Access launch of Starfield rapidly approaching, it won't be long until we start seeing some cool cr??eations. I'm sure we'll end up seeing a pretty solid depiction of Todd Howard after all.

Starfield releases on PC an??d Xbox Series X|S on September 6. It will also be on Xbox Game Pass.

Those pesky NDAs

Starfield is not exactly a complete mystery. Over the years, we've learned a lot about it. There's pretty much been enough information about Bethesda's anticipated sci-fi RPG to fill a 1,000-page compendium. However, it turns out that? the majority of the people working on th?e game are not allowed to actually reveal a lot of detail about it.

That's according to a tweet from Emil Pagliarulo, the design director for Starfield. In a couple of recent posts, it's been noted that many fans have been wanting further information abo?ut the upcoming release. Unfortunately, Pagliarulo has said that only Todd Howard is "authorized to talk publicly about unreleased game info," adding that it does frustrate him that he's unable to answer a lot of people's questions.

//twitter.com/Dezinuh/status/1679551395752558592

A third tweet says that, no matter how much he'd like to, Pagliarulo is unable to share anything about Starfield's performance, the content itself, or "well, most things," as per his NDA. There's no mention of whether anyone else at Bethesda has signed non-disclosure agreements, but it's more than likely they will have done in preparation for Starfield.

But it's still not coming to PlayStation

One thing that has been clear throughout the game's development is its exclusivity with Xbox. For those who don't have a powerful enough PC, and/or have a PS5, there's currently no chance in hell you'll get to experience Starfield, despite Microsoft saying it could easily shift millions of units on the rival console.

In any case, it hasn't stopped it from being the hype juggernaut that it currently is. No one can really blame Todd Howard for wanting the final say in what gets mentioned about Starfield, but it's also understandable why those directly working on the game would be frustrat?ed they ?can't answer fan questions about it.

Elder Scrolls 9 was the best one

In case you haven’t heard, there’s been a whole thing with Mic??rosoft and?? the FTC going on. Something about companies buying other companies, I don’t know, sounds like another day of capitalism to me. The important thing for those of us whose legal knowledge begins and ends with watching 2001’s Legally Blonde has been the inadvertent game rev?eals that ju?st can’t stop popping up. Yet ?despite all the juicy news, the most recent “leakhas fascinated me on a profound level, even though I’m certain it does not exist.

As transcribed by The Verge, a lawyer representing Microsoft wanted to correct the FTC on some potential ?misconc??eptions. The result is this utterly amazing quote.

Could I clarify one issue that counsel raised with you, when you were asking about Zenimax and asked him to find a game that was most similar to Xbox, he mentioned Elder Scrolls. That is incorrect. There are two Elder Scrolls games, one is online called Elder Scrolls Online that is a multiplayer game, it is on PlayStation today. The game he’s talking about Elder Scrolls 16... the projected release is 2026 as a single-player game. It is not anywhere similar to Call of Duty, which as ??you k??now is multiplayer and multi-platform.

Look, I get this is a bit out of context, so I’ll give the lawyer some benefit of the doubt here. But if you think I’m not going to take this opportunity to joke about Elder Scrolls 16 with you then I won’t even finish-

[caption id="attachment_389919" align="alignnone" width="640"]Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind Image via Moby Games[/caption]

Chapter 1: Morrowind

Firstly, nothing has ever made me contemplate my mortality more than the sheer thought of The Elder Scrolls 16 existing. My first memory of the series was with The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind on the original Xbox.

For those who never played this classic RPG, it tasks players with dicking around to increase their stats until they are strong enough to? kill all the guards and become mayor of every town. At least, that was my takeaway when I was 13. The internet has since told me that there was apparently a storyline in that game. I’m going to need at least five sources on that before I believe it.

I got a bit off track there. The point is, that was so long ago that Morrowind is allowed to drink in the United States now. Yet we haven’t even seen footage of The Elder Scrolls 6, let alone 16. By my estimation, if Bethesda does nothing but work on Elder Scrolls games, we should realistically expect Elder Scrolls 16 roughly 12 minutes before?? the ??heat death of the universe.

[caption id="attachment_389924" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

I already ran out of chapter names

Let’s not get away from the other important reveal here: “it is not anywhere similar to Call of Duty.Oh thank god. I’ve been worried about that one. Easily my biggest complaint about Skyrim was that it was way too similar to Call of Duty. They’re both in first-person, you ??can shoot thing??s in both, I rest my case.

Personally, I hope Elder Scrolls 16 goes in a whole new direction. First, they gotta change that camera. Put it in a dedicated third-person view so the camera can really zoom out and show you battle arenas. Second, spice up that combat. Even if you have to scale down the RPG elements, making enemy encounters fast and frantic would really bring a lot of new fans to the series. Third, for the story, I think they should watch Game of Thrones and I just realized I’m describing Final Fantasy XVI.

I dunno, I still think it’s a good idea.

[caption id="attachment_389918" align="alignnone" width="640"]The Elder Scrolls Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

Chapter 16: I’ll be serious now (maybe)

So obviously you can chalk much of this quote up to a mistake. By Elder Scrolls 16, obviously the lawyer meant The Elder Scrolls 6. That is a video game that we may, theoretically, see before we leave this mortal coil. One could treat this as a leak, and believe The Elder Scrolls 6 will launch in 2026.

Nowat this point, I could toss out quotes by Phil Spencer and the like that might conflict with this claim. But frankly, I don’t think I need to. In a world in which Starfield hasn’t even launched yet, I cannot close my eyes, really focus on the words, and say “The Elder Scrolls 6 is coming out in 2026without cackling like I just saw Mega Man take a bullet for Abraham Lincoln. There is no way in all seven of the hells that The Elder Scrolls 6 will come out in 2026. I’d be pleasantly surprised if the thing even comes out? within this decade.

In short, I’m left with the sinking suspicion that Microsoft did not hire this lawyer based on their Xbox GamerScore. And if you see anyone that takes any stock in their claims, kindly tell them that they are wrong. But what do I know, I just write about video games. The last good video game I played was Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose for the SNES, and honestly, Todd Howard better come prepared if he wants the next Elder Scrolls to clear that bar.

Solving problems with words

Bethesda has released a new video answering fans' questions about its upcoming sci-fi RPG Starfield. In it, game director Todd Howard digs into the dialogue mechanics, traits, and more that will make up the Starfield universe.

The unlisted video, which was recently spotted and shared around, has Howard answering questions from fans about what's in store. One b?ig note is the dialogue system.

"We've gone back to a kind of a, I'll call it like, a classic Bethesda-style dialogue," said Howard. "With, you're looking at the character and how they emote, and y??ou have a series of choices there."

Howard goes on to say that the scope of the game is a "bit more" than the team has done before, in terms of quests and "things like that". But the dialogue has also expanded out pretty far, too. The team puts up this comparison, which clocks Starfield in at over 252,953 lines of dialogue compared to Skyrim's 60,000 and Fallout 4's 111,000.

Now I can talk

Of course, sheer number of words is one thing, but it's also about how you use them. Howard highlights the speech persuasion system. In a previous spotlight, the Starfield team compared its persuasion to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

While there's no wheel here, there??'s definitely some verbal sparring. You need to spend points in dialogue to persuade people, which Howard says feels "??natural."

Starfield

Built with traits

Fuel is also a subject the direc?tor comments on, saying the team recently changed it so the fuel in your drive limits "how far you can go at once, but it doesn't run out of fuel."

In another question, Howard talks about the trait system. Players will be able to construct their Starfield character to have traits. These are aspects that offer a boon, like already owning a h?ouse, ??at a price, like also having a debt to pay off.

These are a cool addition in my view, as the benefit-downside balance makes for rea?lly interesting role-playing. Howard does say there will be a way in the game, an activity or quest you can do, that will remove the trait for the rest of your playthrough. So I guess if you don't like the trade-off, you can get rid of it rather than roll a ?new character.

Starfield is currently aiming for a 2023 launch on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

In case you've been holding out on Skyrim

Yup, there is another version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on the way. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition will contain all three expansions, the Special Edition enhancements, over 500 unique?? pieces of Creation Club content, and also fishing.

The Anniversary Edition is part of Bethesda's celebration of Skyrim's 10th anniversary, which also includes a special "Skyrim In Concert" broadcast on Nov. 11, the date Skyrim was originally released in 2011, and a Skyrim fan art museum.

Skyrim's Anniversary Edition will also launch on Nov. 11, 2021 for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The game will wrap up all three of Skyrim's major expansionsem>Dawnguard, Dragonborn, and Hearthfire—and also include some content from the Creation Club. Over 500 u?nique pieces will be in there, including quests, dungeons, weapons, spells, bosses, and more. ?And also, apparently, fishing.

Reeling in a Pogfish in Skyrim's new fishing update

Owners of Skyrim's Special Edition will be able to upgrade to the Anniversary Edition, so there's that. And honestly, if you haven't played Skyrim in a long time, this all seems well and good. Yes, Skyrim is on just about every platform, but it also ends up on every platform for a reason: people really like to play Skyrim.

I don't think I've booted Skyrim up since the last time I p??owered on my Xbox 360. For me, this seems like a decent excuse to jump back into the frozen wilderness. Maybe fish a bit, or just replay the Dark Brotherhood questline.

Bethesda also announced another port-of-sorts today: a remaster of Quake for modern consoles and PC, with a new expansion from MachineGames. While a new game is just around the corner from Bethesda in the form of Deathloop, it's a good time for players looking for excuses to traverse the publisher's back catalog. See y'all in Skyrim.

Still a ways out

With Starfield confirmed and a date set, The Elder Scrolls VI has still been absent since its E3 2018 reveal. Today, Bethesda Game Studios' To??dd Howard gave an update on where progress is at with its other big RPG.

"It's good to think of The Elder Scrolls VI as still being in a design [phase]," said Howard in an interview with Telegraph. He also comments on how the team is testing the Creation Engine 2, which will power both Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI.

"It's like a new tech base," said Howard. "The vast majority of our development work is on Starfield ??right now but everybody works on everything so the projects kin?d of intertwine."

Bethesda has been managing some expectations for updates since the E3 2018 reveal of The Elder Scrolls VI, and since the project is set to launch after Starfield, the wait's going to take a little bit.

It sounds like working on Starfield, and the Creation Engine 2 alongside it, will help the team get an idea of the work ahead. "Every game will have some new suites of technology so Elder Scrolls VI will have some additio?ns on to Creation Engine 2 that that game is going to require," Howard told the Telegraph.

Starfield, meanwhile, was locked in for a Nov. 11, 2022 date during Xbox and Bethesda's joint E3 media showcase. It was also confirmed that it would be an Xbox and PC exclusive,?? and of course, coming to Game Pass.
