Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk confirmed during a recent interview that a new project between him and Activision has been in talks. This news is rolling by as we reach the 25th anniversary of the Pro Skater series later this month; fingers crossed a new Tony Hawk game is in the works.

“I can tell you I’ve been talking to Activision again, which is insanely exciting,�Hawk said to Mythical Kitchen. “We’re working on something.�/p>

Unfortunately, the pro-sk?ating legend doesn't expand beyond that, but notes it's the first time he's acknowledged i??t publicly and something "fans will truly appreciate."

The 25th anniversary of the series occurs on September 29, so if Tony Hawk and Activision have an Ollie cooking in the future, we'll likely hear about it then. Strangely, Activision has also updated the banner image of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater X account, celebrating the 25th anniversary??, leading fans to speculate ??if something is in the works.

During the interview, Hawk explained the origins of the series with him playing an early version of the game with Bruce Willis riding a skateboard. He was approached by Activision after the company heard about Hawk pitching a skateboarding game to multiple companies around a year before. The rest is history as the Pro Skater series has sold over $1.4 billion in copies, according to the official Tony Hawk website.

It's funny to hear how successful the series became because at one point while pitching a project based on this sport to p??ublishers, Hawk was told, according to his Mythical Kitchen interview, "Skateboarding isn't even popular; why would we make a video game with skateboarding?"

The last time we heard news about the Tony Hawk series was when the remakes of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2 launched on Steam. This occurred last year on October 3. Hopefully, a new Tony Hawk game, possibly remakes of 3 + 4, is on the way soon.

The critically acclaimed Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2, ?a remake of the classic original games, launched on PC via the Epic Games Store back in 2020, but it wasn't until October 3, 2023 that the game came out on Steam proper.

Since then, Steam Deck users have been complaining about THPS's befuddling always-online requirement, which meant that any connection issues—which can be common on the go—would terminate the game outright. Just over a week later, out of the blue??, Activision's Vicarious Visions and Iron Galaxy pushed out a small patch dedicated specifically to Deck users.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2's patch 1.1 mentions just two Deck-specific tweaks that are very welcome indeed:

• the Deck's keyboard overlay now works properly
• the game will now function offline for Steam Deck users

Now, while the patch notes obviously specify that Steam Deck users, in particular, can play the game offline, the obvious? expectation is that this implementation would work for Steam users across the board, on any given PC. Not the case, as it turns out.

While the addition of a dedicated offline mode to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 is? obviously a good thing, it's a bit strange that the feature would be kept exclusive to Steam Deck users.

It didn't take long at all for community members to try testing the 'steamdeck=1 %command%' launch command to try and bypass this lockout, as was the case with Forspoken, but this will only work for Linux users, specifically. "Can confirm it returns an error," said Reddit user LuntiX. "I'm the user who did the testing on ??r/pcgaming."

This, of course, was immediately taken as a challenge by some prospective users, with Omac setting up a Steam guide on how to enable THPS's offline mode on Windows PCs, too. The specific techniques used could cause issues in other games, however, so it's a YMMV sort of?? thing.

Setting aside the PC gaming community's sheer ingenuity for a bit, it is a tad strange that such obviously useful and desirable features as offline modes would be locked behind specific kinds of PCs. Because, after all, a Steam Deck is a PC?. The obvious question is why would the devs block off offline mode in such a manner, and why would they go to the trouble of limiting access to it in such an egregious manner? If nothing else, the developer at least responded to the community's request quickly, so there's some type of silver lining to ?be found here.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 was released in September of 2020, and unlike the "HD" re-releases, 1+2 garnered a degree of critical acclaim. It managed to recapture the lightning in the bottle of the original two releases, and wouldn't you know it: they're still extremely good games. Well, the two-pack release is coming back in a new format, as a listing for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 just popped up on Steam (previously it was hosted via the Epic Games Store)??.

With a release date of October 3, it'll also launch with a Digital Deluxe Edition, which comes with the following junk: "The Digital Deluxe Edition includes the complete Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Game, 'T??he Ripper' skater from Powell-Peralta, unique retro outfits for Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero and Rodney Mullen, and unique retro content for the Create-A-Skater mode." Vicarious Visions and Iron Galaxy are both listed as the developers for this version.

More 1 + 2 out and about is a good thing! But there's still some unfinished business if we're just talking old-school Tony Hawk re-releases.

Will we ever see Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4?

This is an older photo of my Tony Hawk collection, but I don't need to tell you how much I love the series, and how sad it's been to see it get to this point. Somehow, Activision brought the reputation of the franchise back from its dirt nap with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, and come to find out, there was a potential rework of Tony Hawk 3 and 4 in play in 2020. Well fast-forward to two years later, and those pl??ans were killed off according to Tony Hawk himself.

If anything, 3 + 4 would be a more interesting overall release than 1 + 2. 3 is generally liked, has a killer soundtrack, and some of the most interesting level layouts in the series. 4, while not as beloved as 1-3, is often mis?understood, and has plenty of unique concepts such as an RPG-like q??uest format, and free roam in campaign levels.

This series prints money so anything can happen: but f?or now, consider it on?? ice.

Released in January 2020, Sega's Yakuza: Like a Dragon had some mighty shoes to fill, specifically the snakeskin shoes of beloved protagonists Kazuma Kiryu. If a change of protagonist wasn't enough, the developer Team Yakuza also took the bold step of replacing the series' brawler action with a suitably slapstick take on turn-based strategy. Against all the odds, the changes were a hit with the majority of the fanbase, and Yakuza: Like a Dragon launched to rave praise, becomin??g one of 2020's best-loved titles.

Developed by veteran studio Vicarious Visions, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 was a ground-up remake of two of the most iconic PlayStation releases of all time. Meticulously recreating the original titles' maps, mechanics, and rhythm to a 1:1 capacity, Vicarious Visions absolutely delivered, with a title that sports the modern aesthetics of today's technology, married to the excellent and compelling gameplay of the '90s classics. Skateboarding extraordinaire and world's most familiar man Tony Hawk has noted that a "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4" remake was on deck, but was ultimately canned when Activision merged developer Vicarious Visions into Blizzard.

As you'll recall, in 2020 Vicarious released its critically acclaimed Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, rebuilding the two classic PlayStation titles from the ground up while maintaining 1:1 gameplay to the legendary original releases. The remake would go on to become the fast-selling entry in franchise history, raking in a million sales in just its first week of release. Naturally, this led fans to hope that both Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 ?would receive similar attention in the near future.

But, speaking on a Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Twitch stream this past weekend, (as spotted by Okami Games), The Birdman h??imself has s??uggested that while further remakes were planned, the controversial merging of Vicarious Visions with Blizzard has most assuredly put paid to that idea, and perhaps permanently.

"I mean, that was the plan, even up until the release date of this, [Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2]. We were going three and four, and then Vicarious got kind of absorbed and they were looking for other developers and then it was over," explained Hawk. "I wish I could say we had something in the ?works, but you know Vicarious Visions kind of got disbanded and Activision's going through ??all their stuff, so I don't know what's next."

At the time, Activision came under heavy criticism from the gaming community, who saw the Vicarious merger as a sign that creativity and variety was being reduced in favor of getting every studio behind company cash cows franchises such as Call of Duty and World of Warcraft. Around the same time, Sony had begun its own studio consolidation program, merging multiple smaller teams into support squads for itself and The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog.

Of course, the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater franchise is an enduring and highly successful series, if one mired in its own ongoing corporate controversy. So never say never. Still, it seems that The Birdma??n may have taken his final flight, at least in the digital realm.

The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 remasters are finally making their way to Nintend?o Switch, so yes, you'll soon be able to ride?? switch on the Switch.

Activision announced today that last year's great remaster of the first two Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games is coming to Nintendo Switch on June 25. This will be the first Tony Hawk's Pro Skater to debut on the Switch,  ?;and it's arriving with eve??rything included: all original levels, skaters, and the sick tracks.

According to the Nintendo eShop page, the Switch version will also have Create-A-Park and Create-A-Skater, as well as online multiplayer and leaderboards. The GIF in the tweet above also shows the game in action, and it looks fairly smooth. Hopefully the transition to Nintendo Switch holds up well, because I don't think you'll need to twist my arm to get me to play some Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on the go.

Good news

Last month, Activision confirmed that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2 was headed to new horizons. Specifically, the Switch and next-gen platforms, after launching on PC, PS4, and X??box One several?? months ago.

But who is handling the Switch port? The same studio that brought the game into the world, it seems. Although they were mum when it was announced, sometime after launch, Activision confirmed to Polygon that? Vicarious Visions is indeed handling the S?witch port themselves.

Although a lot of the work was already done, this is a somewhat interesting arrangement, as Vicarious Visions was incorporated into Blizzard a while back. While the jury is out on whether or not the Switch port is up to snuff, at least we know that the original stu??dio is the one handling it. And Vicarious Visions has worked with the Switch for so long, it's reasonable?? to put a good degree of faith in them to get it right.

Anything can happen though!

How far can you get in an hour?

As someone who just got Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 the other week and has been even more hooked on it than I was expecting, let me just say, it's a great note to end 2020 if at all possible. I f?igured I'd max out a skater or two at most before moving on, but I'm feeling the cal??l. I can't put this remaster down.

If you're in the mood for high-scoring antics on classic levels set to a warm-and-fuzzy nostalgic soundtrack – if you're in the mood for pure and good video game vibes in general – then you might want to make some room in your weekend plans for the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 trial on Xbox One.

The trial is one hour long, and it will be downloadable until January 4, 2021. That time is gonna fly.

Plenty of you already picked up THPS 1+2 over the past few months since launch, ??and plenty more of you are planning to get it when the time is right, but if you need more convincing, demo it.

As with most of you, I'm ready for THPS 3+4 to materialize.

Solo Tours are finally here

I blazed through Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 back in September (which [counts on fingers] was 34 years ago now) and quickly found myself out of stuff to do?. That's because the original games let you play through the tours with each individual skater. The remake, however, aggregates all the goals so that they only need to be accomplished once across the whole roster of skaters.

That's changing tomorrow. Developer Vicarious Visions is adding a Solo Tours mode where goal and medal progress resets for?? each skater. Now the full game can be played over and over ?again. The original version is splintering off to something called "Crew Tours" where players can complete all the game's objectives across as many skaters as they want.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 was already an incredibly challenging and time-co??nsuming completion, but it's going to get significantly tougher. This update also adds more than 100 challenges across 10 challenge sets. They touch on all corners of the game -- solo play, multiplayer, create-a-park, comboing, etc -- and should keep the hardcore community grinding even longer. On the one hand, it'll be good for stocking up on XP and cash; on the other, knocking everything out is even more intimidating now.

Lastly, THPS is getting some create-a-skater items that are Crash Bandicoot-themed. ??A new deck, three hats, and nine shirts are up for grabs as part of the free update. Some of the stuff is shown off in the v?ideo above.

Activision has been steadily supporting THPS 1 + 2 with new features in the two months since it launched. Last month, it was a bunch of social and party features. The Solo Tours update drops on November 6 and similarly goes toward making it a much more robust game. But, you know what'd go toward making it, like, way more robust? The Tony Hawk 3 DLC that everyone desperately wants.

'Private skate sessions, party migration, and leader promotion'

Surprise! Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 just got an update. No, it's not Tony Hawk 3 DLC. Wouldn't that be amazing though?

No, this one is a lot more low key if you're going at it so??lo, as it's focused entirely around multiplayer. Vicarious Visions has just patched in additional party features, which include "private skate sessions, party migration and leader promotion." You also now have the ability to play private matches across every map or "hang out in Free Skate."

Sadly, this patch doesn't open up matchmaking for free skate, so you're still at the whim of playing with people you know directly. It would be pretty amazing of Vicarious Visions intended on adding to the same game over time: patching in Tony Hawk 3+4, as well as social public free skating, to create some sort of Frankensteined Tony Hawk MMO.

That probably won't happen though, as Tony Hawk 3+4 as a separate SKU seems like a given, especially with the success of 1+2.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2 did it: it managed to undo most of the ill-will from Robomodo's wonky Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD.

In addition to a loving amount of attention for the physics system, it also added in a few extras that helped folks enjoy these classics for a little longer. One of said extras is the create-a-park system, which players ??have bee??n using to the fullest this past month or so.

These new creations are compliments of YouTuber IAN / Gunderstank_16, who crafted both Delfino Plaza from Mario Sunshine and Bomb-Omb Battlefield from Mario 64: with a creative spark from Super Mario 3D All-Stars, no doubt. The clips are particularly enjoyable as they're short and to the point, with classic Mario music to boot.

I mostly appreciate how some of the finer details of the stages (or hub, in the case of Delfino Plaza) were done, like the backend of Delfino and the pipes that allow your character to grind to different areas (no FLUDD here!). The Mario outfit is also a nice t?ouch!

Nintendo's retro compilation Super Mario 3D All-Stars is celebrating a second week in the top spot of the UK Charts, having fended off not one, but two of 2K Games' Mafia re-releases.

Both Mafia: Definitive Edition and Mafia Trilogy debuted in the top ten at numbers three and six respectively. Recent releases such as Square Enix's Marvel's Avengers and Activision's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 & 2 have continued to hold onto steadfast positions in the premier league. The rest of the top ten is rounded out by chart veterans such as Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto V, and regular Switch sellers Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Minecraft.

As we head into October, the heavy-hitters will start arriving on store shelves, vying for holiday cash. This week sees the launch of Activision's Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, and giv??en the UK's incessant love affair with the mad marsupial, it seems almost a given that the sequel will be rocketing straight into the number one spot

Nintendo's retro-compendium Super Mario 3D All-Stars has predictably debuted at number one in the UK Charts, dethroning Square Enix's comic-book adventure Marvel's Avengers after the latter ??spent two weeks in the premier position.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars, which launched for Nintendo Switch on September 18, features upscaled remasters of classic adventures Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. The trilogy has received praise f??rom critics and fans fo?r its timeless gameplay, but was chastised for its bare-bones contents and time-limited release window.

Elsewhere in the charts, 2K Games' mediocre brawler WWE 2K Battlegrounds debuted at number six. Tellingly, it appears that media outlets were not given review codes for the microtransaction-heavy wrestlefest. Also debuting in the Top Ten this week is Konami soccer title eFootball PES 2021, j??ust squeezing into the premier league at number nine.

The create-a-gift that keeps on giving

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 is out?, and he??y: Vicarious Visions did a pretty good job with it!

When it was released earlier this month folks were reliving their memories left and right, while also wishing upon a star for a Tony Hawk 3 + 4 (but mostly 3) remaster. It also didn't ship half-heartedly, like the Robomodo re-release (Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD) did in 2012. In other words, it has split-screen play as well as all of the typical create-a suites you've come to love. That ?includes the create-a-park feature, which folks have ??been going hog wild with these past few weeks.

Over on Reddit, user TomHanks12345 (what a name) shared a fairly nonchalant course that earned the respect of the game's official Twitter account: Shipment from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The?y had to work within the confines of the game's creation tools, but the layout looks just right!

If ?you're playing on PC, you can search for it under the name "Shipment." Sadly, the create-a-park feature is not cross-platform at the mo??ment (a request that's since been made after numerous creations have been shared these past few weeks).

Some Assembly Required

Despite mediocre reviews, Square Enix's comic-book adventure Marvel's Avengers has had a relatively successful physical launch, retaining the top spot of the UK Charts, while fending off advances from Activision's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 & 2 and THQ Nordic's remaster Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning.

Last week also saw a physical release for Xbox Game Studio's Minecraft Dungeons, which debuts at number six after a slew of Nintendo Switch sales. Minecraft Dungeons is a cheerful, Diablo-like take on the mega-popular block-building title Minecraft, which itself has been a mainstay in the Top Ten f??or several weeks now.

The remainder of the Top Ten is filled out with chart stalwarts such as Take 2's Grand Theft Auto V, and Nintendo Switch releases Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Ring Fit Adventure, as the high street waits for the inevitable influx of? major holiday releases.

In the biggest video game release week in some time, Square Enix' Marvel's Avengers successfully beat out Activision's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 & 2 and 2K Games' NBA 2K21 to take the number one spot of the UK Charts.

Despite receiving mediocre reviews, the superhero extravaganza sold enough physical copies in the UK high street to debut in the premier position, no doubt thanks to the extremely attractive and popular Marvel Comics branding. However, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz, Marvel's Avengers sold only a third of the launch numbers of the last major Marvel release, Marvel's Spider-Man, which hit the PS4 back in September 2018.

Elsewhere in the charts, CD Projekt RED's epic RPG sequel The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt saw a huge spike in sales, rocketing the 2015 release back up the charts to number 11. This is no doubt due to CDPR's recent reveal of a next-gen release for The Witcher 3, with free upgrades offered to players who? own ?the PS4 or Xbox One edition of the game.

'It's just another Saturday'

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater left i??ts mark on history...I want to say...within minutes of its relea?se in 1999.

It didn't matter if you skated or not, it was a cultural touchstone, a sign that skating had arrived. While it's faltered through the years (Tony Hawk himself dates it around 2006, when Project 8 was released), it's back now: for real this time.

This isn't the same mistake of a release that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD was in 2012.

Split-screen is back, as well as the ability to create-a-skater or lead a selection of pros through a campaign mode that spans the first two games; without the need for DLC or post-launch updates. The other key to the kingdom: it was genius to reintroduce the wall plant, transfer, revert, and manual concepts all at once. As you can see in the trick videos so far a hell of a lot is possible, as the mechanical inner workings of 1 + 2 were not hamstrung out of the gate.

That attention to detail is the crux of what Vicarious Visions was able to pull off. ??Keep it simple on the surface, but complex under the hood. Outside of a few instances every so often where it feels like my skater didn't quite land how they should have (which could use some post-game patches to shore up), it's very similar to the old games, but with a framework that allows a lot more combo potential.

And what would a Tony Hawk game be without a killer soundtrack? The tracklist is available here to inspect, and suffice to say most of the classic songs from the first two games are intact. It's all subjective at the end of the day, but I turned off a lot of the new ones out of preference. Thankfully, the entire jukebox feature is customizable, and the R3 button instantly switches tracks even mid-game. "Little upgrades" are a running theme with this vers??ion.

As far as modes go, this re-release is dead simple — to the point where the lack of fanfare might leave you underwhelmed. The campaign consists of nine Tony Hawk 1 levels, eight standard Tony Hawk 2 stages (with a final Chopper Drop unlock and a secret level), and the ability to free skate or score-attac??k all of those stages in free play. You can also create-your-own park (or play with a few of Vicarious' brews) and play offline (split-screen) or online multiplayer?.

That's basically it. You'll skate your way through each stage completing classic objectives — high score, collect the S-K-A-T-E letters, grab the secret tape, and other scavenger hunt-like stuff — and finishing enough of them unlocks the following stage. There aren't any elaborate new cutscenes or a story, really: even if you create and customize your own skater. The overarch?ing game does have challenges and plenty of [in-game] cosmetics to peruse and buy though, if you're hell-bent on getting a true 100% completion rating. This "level-up" throughput also unlocks extra content and more custom trick slots.

You can even use the same old school guides if you want for the most part (a few things have been added to the original campaign)! It's all straight drop-in and go, arcade style. There's a ton of classics here: Mall, School II, Venice Beach, all of which elicit fond memories as I forge new ones with the new visual style. It was a joy to replay all of them again, trying to remember where all of the well-hidden gap challenges were and seeing everything in another light. The first two games are a powerhouse in terms of playgrounds to mess around in and try to find the best combo lines, so it's no surprise that they still withstand the test of time. Some stages are more touched-up than others, but as a whole everything looks cleaner and smoother than it did with the prior HD release.

I do have to say though: this could have used some Tony Hawk 3 levels, even just for the sake of longevity. It didn't occur to me until replaying the entire series a few years back that the third entry low key had some of the best stages in the franchise, packed with more goal variety. The team could have added a bit of that panache to some of the smaller-scale areas of Tony Hawk 1 + 2, for those of you ?out there who don't want to chase high scores or online leaderboards. As a small concession, you do get a few cute cheat codes and visual toggles for 100%-ing each campaign.

I'm harping on replay value a tad here because while split-screen is a boon, it's not perfect. Available for up to two players (Free Skate, Trick Attack, Score Challenge, Combo Mambo, Combo Challenge, Tag, Graffiti, H-O-R-S-E?), the mode takes a framerate hit, even in gametypes where only one person is on the screen at a time. I'm glad it exists in any for?m, flawed or not; but don't expect to be able to jump into it and have it run flawlessly.

Blemishes aside, Activision is doing so much right this time beyond just putting Vicarious Visions in charge. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 isn't going to blow people away, but it preserves the original exper??ience with a few modern conveniences. It's a win.

Unfortunately, Spider-Man isn't one of them

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 will have you grinding rails and manualing flatlands with some of the best to ever ride. You've got your Rune Glifbergs, your Chad Muskas, and, of course, you've got your Birdmans.

There are some more, umm, unconventional, skaters too. A fun staple of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is the stable of secret characters. Officer Dick, a lazy-ass mallcop-lookin' dude, debuted in Tony Hawk 1. Spider-Man swung onto the scene in Tony Hawk 2. (Unfortunately but also predictably, Spider-Man isn't in this game. Given how cagey Sony is about licensing Spidey, no o??ne really expected Activision to pay out the nose for a secret char?acter.)

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 seems to have three secret characters ?to unlock, although only two of them look to be earned in the traditional sense. Let's get the oddball ??out of the way first.

Ripper is a skeleton skater (and also the mascot of Powell-Peralta) who's unlocked by buying the Digital Deluxe edition of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2. There might be another way to unlock Ripper, but it probably won't be through gameplay. If anything, the smart bet is that he'll eventually show up as p?aid DLC.

The Roswell ??Alien is the neatest secret character. Not coincidentally, unlocking him is also the most involved. To get extraterrestrial, you'll need to find (and squish) the alien plushie doll that's hiding in each of the game's 19 levels. Fortunately, YouTuber WorkTheSpace put together the guide that's embedded above which shows where each plushie is located. Knock them all out a?nd the Alien is yours.

Lastly, we have the secret character mainstay: Officer Dick. This time, Officer Dick is played by Jack Black, which really is just perfect in every way.? He's earned by completing all 24 Create-a-Skater challenges. These objectives can be found in the "Challenges" tab and then the "Skater Challenges" sub-menu.

That's all we know about for now. There mig??ht be more than three secret characters found eventually (but the menu screen nicely fits 24 total skaters). We'll update this guide if any more are discovered. U?ntil then, get skatin' if you want to unlock the Roswell Alien and Officer Dick; get payin' if you want to unlock Ripper.

Oh, the places you'll grind

The launch trailer for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2&nb??sp;is a trip down memory lane. And it makes it all the more unbearable that I can't per?sonally take that stroll yet.

Two weeks before Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 actually launches, Activision has released the game's launch trailer. For those of you who were brought up on these games, it's a sizzle reel flyby of some of the most memorable levels in the series' history. San Francisco ("Streets)! Minneapolis ("Downtown")! The Hoover Dam ("Downhill Jam")! The first Tony Hawk avoided proper na??med locations like they'd need to be licensed.

Then the camera finally slows down for a second to show Roswe??ll's?? anguished alien. Hint for all your first-timers: You'll need to find the "ET Grind."

I am going to play the ever-living hell out of this game. My first 100-percented career? You know that goes to my boy Rune.

Skate in the name of the law

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater has no shortage of secret characters across its many games. Spider-Man can be unlocked in THPS2. Daisy, modeled after porn star Jenna Jameson, can be unlocked in THPS3. The list is long and fascinating, but none ??of the secret characters are more iconic than Officer Dick.

Officer Dick, more Paul Blart than RoboCop, is the policeman who is an unlockable skater in the first four Tony Hawk games. He's seemingly back for this fall's modernization of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, p??layed by a very famous actor. Call it Tenaci??ous Donut.

After a little digging in the demo's files, YouTuber CheezhOfficial found Jack Black playing Officer Dick. The arrangement makes sense. Black has been along for the ride as Activisio??n and Tony Hawk revealed this ??project. Also, Black and the Birdman are friends in real life.

But, more than that other stuff, doesn't it just feel like Jack Black is kind of the essence of THPS in a way, especially with Officer Dick? Like, Officer Dick alre?ady felt like he was a Jack Black character. Now, he's actually played by Jack Black. All is right.

'So here I am'

Warehouse. Two minutes.

Show me what you've got.

What you see in the vid??eo above is the result of just 15 minutes of getting acclimated to the remaster on PS4. So far so go??od!

It feels weird playing Tony Hawk with ??new physics (whether it's previous remasters or new iterations), but Vicarious Visions really had a handle on the original games when translating this new version. There are small kinks: times where you're like "I totally nailed that trick!" But they are few and far between as you learn to better navigate the choppy seas of half-pipes and rails.

As a reminder, although this is technically Tony Hawk's Pro Skater "1+2," there are elements from future games that are present. The incorporation of the revert is the biggest blessing, which should allow for plenty of insane million-plus-point combos. It feels like such a small gesture but it's genius: as you'll have all of the tools available to make a perfect line combo on every level (of which there are 19 in the final version??).

That includes the Warehouse. Picking everything back up in the very first level ?I played in this series in 1999 felt like second nature?; in part due to Vicarious Vision's commitment to the classics. Unlike the 2012 remake from Robomodo, which had its own issues with the Unreal Engine 3 skeleton, this one feels much closer to the original. Vicarious Visions is one-upping Robomodo by bringing back split-screen on top of that. Activision isn't keen to make the same mistakes twice, it seems.

Although our demo gave us limited access to the main menus, everything is looking good so far. You can check it out for yourself: aesthetic customizations are in, as are unique special trick inputs and the ability to select ??a music playlist (yes!). Billy Talent's "Afraid of Heights," Goldfinger's "Superman," Rage Against the Machine's "Guerrilla Radio" and Tyrone Briggs' "Lose Control" are the four songs on offer in the demo. Nearly every track fr?om the original two games are coming back though, as well as 37 new tunes.

As far as UI options go, everything a Tony Hawk player could want looks to be covered, like turning off individual facets of the HUD, swapping to "legacy movesets" for both classic entries and allowing "assists" (kinda like cheat codes) for any type of trick. It's fairy comprehensive and should delight everyone from veterans to newcomers who are just earning their wheels. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 is out on PC, PS4 and Xb??ox One on September 4. If you pre-ordered digitally, you can access the Warehouse demo on August 14.

As for my early impressions with it: there's something so surreal about listening to the lyrics for Superman and hearing "I'm getting older all the time" 21 years after playing the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. This is a series practically everyone I knew at least dabbled in. I hope that same sense of community blossoms out of a strong foundation for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, and sets the stage for more remasters and a proper fol??low-up.

'Bangers', fellow kids

One of the key elements that goes into making a classic Tony Hawk title is a great, memorable soundtrack. And while Activision's upcoming Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 & 2 will feature most of (but not all) of the classic hits from the original PlayStation releases, the new OST will also be expanded with the addition of 37 new songs.

A gamut of genres will be featured in the remaster, with heavy leanings toward the skate-friendly ska-punk sound. Names even Old Man Moyse recognises like Reel Big Fish, Sublime, The At??aris and A Tribe Called Quest will be joined by the likes of DZ Deathrays, Chick Norris and - checks notes - Viagra Boys. Back in my day, etc.

Bring 'em on

For a while there, it looked like the future of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was on hold; or at a bitter end.

The unfortunately-named Tony Hawk 5 was a new low for the series, and left us hanging for nearly five years as we anxiously awaited the fate of this once-beloved franchise. Just a few months ago, Tony Hawk let us in on 2020's worst-kept secret: Vicarious Visions and Activision were creating a remaster of the first two games called Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2.

Due out in September on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, the revival bundles together the two classic entries, with tons of input from Hawk himself and several other skaters. Based on a statement he's made in the latest issue of Game Informer however, he doesn't want to stop there.

Speaking to the magazine, Hawk says "this is just the start...with that baseline we're hopefully going to be able to help remaster other titles, Pro Skater 3 and 4 even, and start to work on a new direction. That's ultimately the goal for me." Naturally, money talks (especially with Activision), so this project wou?ld have to sell before that happened.

Something tells me though that Vicarious Visions knows what they're doing and folks have been hungry for a "knock it out of the park good" Tony Hawk game since...THUG 2? Some would say THUG 1? So if the quality is there (and that "baseline" Hawk mentions is a workable physics system), the fanbase ?will follow.

Warehouse is the ideal intro to Vicarious Visions' remaster

Activision slapped a release date on the Warehouse demo for the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2 remaster. If you pre-order the game digitally on PS4, Xbox One, or PC (Epic Games Store), you'll get access to the demo on August 14, 2020, just a few weeks before THPS's September 4 launch.

This is going to sound ridiculous – hear me out! – but I'm almost more excited for the Warehouse demo (assuming it's the full stage) than I am the rest of the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2 package. The vibe runs deep. I miss the days when I'd go hard on a demo becau??se, well, that's just what we did back then.

Will it be as fun as we remember? Will it be better? I'm sticking to my modest expectations.

In a blog post, Activision also revealed eight new skaters that will join the original, aged-up cast of THPS 1 and 2: Lizzie Armanto, Leo Baker, Leticia Bufoni, Riley Hawk, Nyjah Huston, Tyshawn Jones, Aori Nishimura, and Shane O'Neill. Naturally, the newcomers have "their own signature tricks to represent their strengths and accomplishments they have ear??ned so far in their young careers."

I love this endless summer of demos, even? if this one is tied to pre-orders.

What a character he is in real life too!

I still remember where I was when I picked up Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for the first time.

I was at my friend David's house, completely unaware for what we were getting ourselves into. We were learning the ropes, then suddenly: "Superman" came on. It sounds cli??che to say that hearing one song was ?a life-changing moment, but eight hours later, it still felt like we were in a split-screen trance. We just couldn't stop playing it.

That similar scene would happen as I played Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and listened to "No Cigar" over and over, or "96 Quite Bitter Beings" in Tony Hawk 3, and...you get the picture. Soundtracks are a huge part of what makes THPS so memo?rable for a large swath of people, but the skat?ers were naturally a big draw as well.

Growing up, in and out of the game I was always a fan of Chad Muska. I not only admired his passion for skating, but the fact that each and every Tony Hawk entry he would reinvent himself and almost feel like a completely different person. He's also one of the few members of the cast that stuck with the series for so long, as he was frequently a large part of the various story modes across its strong decade-plus run.

He's still supporting the franchise, actually, as is evidenced in the video below, where he muses on the impact of Tony Hawk has a whole. That said, ?Brett also makes a compelling case for Rune Glifberg!

Like you have a cooler name?

Tony Hawk is the best, or at least the most talented, or at least the most influential sk8er boi of all time. He isn't, howeve??r, the best skater in his own game. That honor goes?? to Rune Glifberg.

You know how sometimes people can have opinions, but those opinions are also absolutely unquestionably unwaveringly right? This is one of those times. Rune Glifberg was, hands-down, the most badass skater in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.

Picture this: Rune is in Chicago or Portland or Roswell. It doesn't matter. He finds that big halfpipe, lands a couple 360 tricks for speed before unleashing a 720 Rocket Air. Oh fuck, this is just like when Michael Jordan decides he's not losi??ng. Perfect landing, back up and into a 720 Benihana. That Special Meter is full. Just give Rune the ??gold medal now, we all know what's next. Hanging in the air forever -- looking still as a Polaroid but somehow also spinning incredibly fast -- 720 Christ Air. 

Chad Muska needs that big-ass backpack to stash this big-ass ?L. It won't fit in the overhead compartment, now he's gotta check it. That's an extra $50. He's pissed, it's a whole thing.

Also, and I can't stress this enough, his name is Rune.

Anyway, I saw this video of Steve Caballero promoting the THPS 1+ 2 remaster and thought there might be some people out there who believe he is the THPS GOAT. Crazy notion but we live in crazy times. He's no Bob Burnquist and he's no Jamie Thomas. And he's certainly no Spider-Man. But he's definitely no Ru??ne beca?use only Rune is Rune. 

If you wrongly hold some other skater in the highest of regard, you can post your counter-arguments in the comments. They will be summaril?y ignored.

Ominous Activision

Activision is the absolute? king of saying things like "there will be no microtransactions at launch," and then laughing like an anime antagonist off camera.

While the "none at launch" phrase has become key for them, fans lament the fact that a nebulous "demand" requires adding them in after the fact: after reviews have landed and the publisher is in the clear. Although that's not written in the stars for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 (a remaster of the first two ga??mes due later this year), it's certainly a possib??ility.

Speaking to GameSpot, Vicarious Visions lead Jen Oneal noted: "Every??th?ing that you see at launch is going to be unlocked with gameplay. We're not planning on having monetization at launch. ;If there is demand for additional content, Vicarious Visions might consider releasing more stuff to buy with real money down the road."

You could say this is a pretty loaded response, as there certainly will be a demand for a proper remaster of one of the most popular franchises of all time: but that does not necessitate microtransactions. A f??ull, premium paid DLC will do just fine! Cross-play would help ease the sting a bit, which is also being vaguely teased and not ruled out, according to Oneal: "When the time comes we will say more."

Although after-the-fact-micros are a gut punch, if the remasters feel complete at launch, it'll be a much easier pill to swallow. Vicarious Visions has been doing great work this past decade, and the series seems like it's in good hands. I'm already clamoring for a Tony Hawk 3+4.

THPS wouldn't be nearly as iconic or groundbreaking without its soundtrack. That's a fact of life. At the same time – licensing being the mess that it is – there were bound to be omissions like "Cyco Vision" and "Bring the Noise." Those cuts hurt in such a nostalgic remaster, but I'm pleasantly surprised ??overall.

Do you feel old listening to these time-c??apsule tracks? Embrace it! It's the mood of 2020.

'Will you teach me to do a 900?'

With Tony Hawk's Pro Skater fresh on our minds, it's as good of a time as ever to remember that Jack Black has a lighthearted YouTube channel dedicated to his adventures in video games and life. Recently??, h??e hung out with Hawk and special guests for "a little gaming, a little skating, and a little rocking."

The video coincided with this morning's exciting Pro Skater 1 and 2 remaster news from Vicarious Visions, a studio that fans – at least some fans – think should be up to the task. The classic skateboarding seri?es suffered a string of missteps in recent years, and there's no telling how this revival will turn out until it's in our hands, but for now, we're hooked on a glimmer of hope. So far, so good.

Jablinski Games got to fool around in the unmistakable Warehouse level which, conveniently, is the pre-order bonus for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2. If you pre-order the remaster on PC, PlayStatio?n 4, or Xbox One, you'll get a "Warehouse Demo" this summer before the game's September 4, 2020 launch.

"Where is the actual warehouse," Black asked.

"Dude, this is a m?ake-believe place," Hawk expla??ined.

He was being one-hundred percent sincere.

They both were.

We must treasure them forever.

The gameplay is sandwiched between a Devo jam session and a skate session with "friends of the show" Chad Muska, Rodney Mullen, Kareem Campbell, Eric Koston, and Elissa Steamer, among others.

You might not have a soft spot for Jack Black, or Tony Hawk, or even THPS – what are you?! – but th??is video is still super enjoyable from a hanging-out, havin'-fun, wholesome slice-of-life perspective.
