Another stealth re-release by Activision

Four years later, High Moon Studios' Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is back with a pair of new ports for current consoles. The third-person shooter appeared out of nowhere on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 digital storefronts in Australia today, and it'll seeming?ly be available elsewhere tomorrow??.

Considering these new versions are the work of FunLabs, the same team that brought the Prototype games over to Xbox One and PS4, I would keep my expectations reasonably low. The fact that Activision has once again chosen to do a stealth release for Transformers doesn't inspire confidence.

Potential technical concerns aside, I think most of us can agree that Fall of Cybertron's predecessor, War for Cybertron, was the all-around superior game. If you're wondering about multiplayer, it would seem that will still be supported here -- there are multiplayer-centric Trophies, at any rate.

After the mostly favorable reception of Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, High Moon Studios has been patie?ntly working on its first series of downloadable content.

The DLC packs will be give players the chance to to con??trol some other fan-favorite Transformers in multiplayer modes, as well as give them more? gear to customize their personal multiplayer Transformer. Two packs -- the Dinobot Destructor Pack and the Multiplayer Havoc Pack -- are available right now on PlayStation 3, X?box 360, and PC for the price of $9.99 or 800 Microsoft Points.

The Massive Fury Pack will contain five characters and three single-player weapons, but fans will have to wait until September 25, 2012 to get their Insecticon on. I really enjoyed Transformers: War for Cybertron, and was genuinely interested in this one. It's a shame that they cut out the ability to co-op the ca??mpaign; even for as buggy as it got sometimes, it was still enjoyable.

The Dinobot Destructor Pack includes:

  • Grimlock
  • Slug
  • Snarl
  • Swoop

The Multiplayer Havoc Pack includes:

  • Ultra Magnus
  • Wheeljack
  • Blast Off
  • Zeta Prime
  • Perceptor

The Massive Fury Pack, releasing on September 25??, will include:

  • Kickback
  • Sharpshot
  • Hardshell
  • G1 Retro Optimus Prime
  • Autobot Hound
  • G2 Bruticus Skin for Singleplayer
  • G1 Shockwave Blast Cannon for Singleplayer
  • G1 Megatron Pistol for Singleplayer

In Australia, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron will not be getting a PC release. Aussie gamers will instead have to stick with consoles, nothing at all, or Plan B

When PC Gamer?? asked Activision for a reason, it got a very abrupt, "No info. It's just not available."&nbs??p;

Well, th??at sucks for Australian PC gamers. Still, they've gotta be getting used to these regular screwjobs by now.

Transformers: War for Cybertron was one of my top multiplayer games of 2010. Something about it just worked surprisingly well, and High Moon Studios deserved oodles of kudos for providing the Transformers license with an original, structurally sound, vastly entertaining game that respected the fr??anchise in a way other games (and certain movies) had not.

When faced with a sequel, High Moon has taken the "if it's not broken, don't fix it" approach and essentially pulled the same trick twice. In fact, it's hard to say exactly what the differences are between Transformers: Fall of Cybertron and War for Cybertron at a glance.

It only gets marginally easier ?with an extended look.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron (PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 [reviewed])
Developer: High Moon Studios
Publisher: Activision
Released: August 21, 2012
MSRP: $59.99

Following the events of War for Cybertron, the Transformers' titular planet is on the brink of collapse. The battle between the Autobots and Decepticons has drained Cybertron of its energon resources, and the Autobots decide to impos?e self-exile and find a new world on which to start over. Naturally, Megatron won't have any of?? that, and will go out of his way to keep Optimus Prime grounded, out of little more than petty spite.

While events certainly occur, there's very little story in Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. Despite retelling the story of the Transformers before they came to Earth and heavily revising the origins of Grimlock and the Dinobots, the narrative campaign feels somewhat rushed, as important exposition is gotten over quickly. Each focal character gets one or maybe two chapters in order to say what they have to say. Unlike War for Cybertron, which had some nice build and was paced very well, the plot of Fall flits too easily between Autobot and Decepticon characters, never focusing on a single plot point long enou??gh for it to have any gravitas.

There are definitely some great moments on par with the original game. The Starscream coronation scene is a definite highlight (yes, the infamous dialog exchange takes place!) and the level involving Grimlock and his classic T-Rex transformation is a delightfully empowering jaunt. I also love that High Moon included a genuinely creepy take on my personal favorites, the Insecticons, though the purist in me still sneers at High ??Moon giving Shrapnel's speech impediment to Kickback -- a criticism that should have no relevance to any sane human with real priorities.

Still, the campaign is left wanting in comparison to the first. The gameplay is still solid, with the same great controls for both robot and vehicular forms, and I ??love the new upgrade system, in which players can purchase and enhance a variety of weapons and perks from Teletraan 1 outlets -- you can even rate each upgrade online to help new players find the best stuff. However, the newer, mor??e open environments aren't so much liberating as they are repetitive, arena-like areas that lack any sense of atmosphere. The weapons also seem to feel far less effective, especially when going up against masses of shotgun-toting enemies that can reduce player characters to scrap in seconds. Combat was always going to be clunky by the very nature of the robots involved, but this time around it feels unfocused, possessed of a certain anarchy that is more overwhelming than enjoyably chaotic.

The game's final level is truly the highlight of the show, switching from Autobot to Decepticon in a fluid way as players jump from bot to bot in an epic battle aboard Prime's Ark. The elegance and scale of this battle is a thing of beauty, and something I wish there could have been more of. When High Moon pulls out all the stops, it still manages to create something awesome. Sadly, it does it with less frequency in Fall as it did in War, and the result is a single-player mode that feels rather unsatisfying. Still good, and still tossing out enough references and jokes to make the average Transformers fan?? smile, but nevertheless a ?little disappointing.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron screenshot

Multiplayer is still the game's biggest selling point, and it's as great as ever -- mostly because it's almost exactly the same as last time. Yet again, players get to choose between four distinct classes -- the hard-hitting Titan,? healing Scientist, tactical Destroyer and stealthy Scout. Aside from some weapon changes and ability tweaks, these classes play pretty much as they did the last time, each one respectively turning into a tank, plane, truck and car, while fulfilling their archetypal battlefield roles. There are a number of competitive modes to choose, from simple deathmatches and capture-the-flag bouts to the one fresh addition, headhunter. In headhunter, players need to kill and collect the fallen "sparks" of their enemies, and bring them to an ever-changing location in order to score points. It's more or less a dog-tag mode with a Cybertronian twist.

Unlike single-player, the busy combat and disorderly flow of each match are positive traits. If you can get a full match together, each round is a tumultuous clash of metal and explosions. Each class is really well balanced, with a skilled scout able to take down a hulking tank if used correctly, and the new maps are just the right size to take advantage of vehicular motion without being so big that it's a dull slog to the next kill zone. Of course, if you played the first game, you'd know this already, because the exact same praise for the multiplayer in War for Cybertron applies here -- whether that's good or bad hinges on how muc?h you ??want to enjoy the same great taste twice.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron screenshot

Character creation is expanded, with a lot of armor pieces to mix and match, and a greater range of color schemes, as well as a variety of custom loadouts and gear that can be gradually unlocked as players earn XP and rank up. Despite the enhanced variety, it still feels very restricted, with pre-set two-tone color schemes and armor pieces based largely on named characters from the single-player campaign. Still, it is an improvement, and one of the few genuine attempts to evolve Fall beyond the first game. I guess that's something.

Yet again, the jewel in Transformers: Fall of Cybertron's crown is Escalation. This is a co-op survival mode for up to four players that again doesn't do much different from last time. The player team is faced with waves of increasingly brutal enemy robots, and can earn cash to spend on upgrades, as well as unlockable doors that expand the arena and grant access to more powerful gear. This remains the most fun aspect of the game, but it feels a little downgraded from last time. First of all, there's less of a recognizable variety of enemies, due to the fact that even when varied, a lot of the opponents behave and look the same. What's more, the range of playable charact??ers has been restricted ??in order to enforce a more class-oriented approach to team-building.

This time around, players have to pick one of four pre-set characters rather than the wider range seen last time. Each one possesses certain skills -- such as healing or ammo replenishment -- in order to enc?ourage more strategy. It's a noble idea that does indeed add a slight tactical bent to the onslaught, but it's come at the cost of personal choice and the previously endearing ability to grab your favorite character.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron has a lot of what made the original game so great, but it suffers from generation loss, relinquishing a portion of its quality in the cloning process. The decision to give players more of the same is made less palatable by the fact that its story is nowhere near as engaging and the multiplayer has not expanded in any way -- and even been scaled back in the case of Escalation. If you choose to play it, you will certainly have a lot of fun. However, you will miss practically nothing by choosing to skip this installment. That's not to say you shouldn't? get it -- just don't expect a ??must-see revelation.

As such, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is a step down from High Moon's encouraging start -- n??ot bad at all and more than capable of providing ?entertainment, but unable to reach the heights of that which came before.

It's Tuesday, and that means it's time to be a robot and smash other robots. A demo for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is available to download from Xbox Live Arcade right now. Those waiting for the PlayStation Network demo can grab that tomor??row.

The demo has two single-player missions, one starring Bumblebee and one featu?ring the aerial Combaticon, Vortex. There is also limited multiplayer access, with players able to create a character and hop into both Deathmatch and Conquest modes.

That's my morning set, anyway.

You may initially be taken aback by Activision's latest Transformers: Fall of Cybertron announcement whereby confirming three different store exclusive pre-order bonuses for the upcoming game. But I'm sure you'll quickly come to terms with this because: 1) it seems to be common practice with some publishers and 2) Activision did something like this with War for Cybertron.

Pre-ordering from GameStop will give you access to the G1 Optimus Prime, along with G1-inspired weapons; if you're from the UK, pre-ordering from GAME yields the same bonus. If you decide to go with Play.com,?? y??ou'll get a pretty awesome looking Swoop character for use in multiplayer.

Your final option is to side with independent retailers such as ShopTo which will?? give you an unlock code for a si??ngle player G2 Bruticus skin.

If anything, this move is just going to confuse those who are planning to pr??e-order the game as they'll now need to go looking for the bonus that ??best suits them thus, once again, dividing the fanbase.

Here's a great big wad of assets for High Moon Studios' Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. There's a whole bunch ??????????????????????????of screenshots showing off aspects of both the single-player and online sectors, while the trailer above details the multiplayer.

I really dug the multiplayer in the last game, but lo?nged for more flexibility with the character creator. I'm glad High Moon is bumping that up and offering a far wider range of options. Hopefully I'll now get the Sunstorm of my dreams.

High Moon Studios finally let us go hands-on with the multiplayer for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. Right off, I'll say that those that played and enjoyed MP in its predecessor, War for Cybertron, will be pleased to hear that this one is just as easy to get into, and just as fun to pl?ay. I didn't get much time with MP, but I already fee?l pretty good about it.

Team Deathmatch was a good time. My gro??up rolled tough, stuck together, and fought...as best as we could. We lost, but at least we tried hard. I played using a Scientist class?? bot, which is pretty limited in the strength department, but moves around well (I love changing from ship to bot to get around) and plays a key role in team play with its lock-on healing beam. Like any good bot, my guys could take hits, and I kept them topped off as much as I could, but the damned monster-ass Titans are too tough, and we fell hard under their attacks. You'll need real teamwork to take these guys down.

I also did time with the game's node-taking/defending conquest mode, which wasn't as entertaining as it needed to be as all of the other players seemed to be lost in the map. Maybe a too-big map is at fault here. I did plenty of node taking as well as defending, but most of my time was spent crusin' for a brusin', looking for any kind of action in the map's multi-tiered zones. What little action I saw playing as the zippy Infiltrator class was nice, with so??me good fights happening around no??de defense, but I was never fully engaged like I was in Team Deathmatch.

I had only a limited to play with the game's multiplayer customization features, but I suspect that this will be hugely popular when the game ships. The four classes, Infiltrator, Destroyer, Scientist and Titan, can be tweaked from t?op to bottom in whatever way you please. Colors, shapes, sizes, weapons -- you name it. If you've ever dreamed of creating your own Transformer, this feature will tickle you metallic pink. (Seriously, tha?t's an option.)

Finally, High Moon's Matt Tieger confirmed that both Din??obots and Insecticons will eventually become playable classes in multiplayer. It sounds like they'll be DLC options, but this is still great news for Transformer fans.

Transformers Fall of Cybertron will be released August 21 on Xbox 360, PS?3, an?d PC.

Along with this date we have a new trailer showinng off the city-sized Transformer known as Metroplex. This dude's a beast! As we revealed in an earlier preview, you?'ll be able to issue commands to Metroplex while fighting. Having a bot the size of a city at your command is ?going to be pretty great.

There's also new box art in ou??r gallery below.&nbs??p;

I'm looking forward to next week, when I'll be able to finally go hands-on with Fall of Cybertron's multiplayer. Stay tuned for that.

Pre-ordering Transformers: Fall of Cyberteron from either GameStop or Amazon will net customers some unique extras,?? designed to tickle their nostalgic muscles. Naturally, there are two different offers exclusive to two different retailers, and I'd say GameSt?op got the better deal.

GameStop gets to offer the "G1 Retro Pack," based off the "gene??ration one" cartoon that most of you will be familiar with. Optimus Prime will get a skin that closely resembles his original look, and players will also unlock a powerful Megatron Gun and Shockwave Blast Cannon for use in the single-player campaign.

Amazon is less impressive, offering a "G2 Bruticus Skin." The second generation of Transformers toy??s had some funky color schemes, and Bruticus will reflect that with his vivid palette. It certainly looks freaky, ?but it's hard to top an incentive that rocks Megatron's original transformation.

Feel free to check out the pre-order business in our? attached gallery.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is looking good, and the thing I'm looking forward to the most are the Dinob??ots. High Moon Studios had to convinc??e Hasbro to let them include the dinosaur crew, and once they did, they went about creating a whole new origin story for them.

Grimlock, Snarl, Slug, and Swoop are fully shown off breathing fire, doing ?robot thing?s, and beating the sh*t out of everything. Because they're Dinobots and they're amazing.

You know, all this talk of Dinobots has me thinking about how this whole reboot of Transformers is cool and all, but when is Hasbro going to bring back Beast Wars? You guys remember that? It was cooler than Transformers (yeah, I went there) because they were all freaking animals instead of just cars and Dino?bots. The cartoon was so damn good too. Oh wel??l, a guy can dream, can't he?

A new trailer and screens for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron have been unearthed, and they detail everybody's favorite space-dinosau?r, Grimlock! Check out the assets to see loads of this Dinobot in action. He's pretty badass.

One thing that I find unsettling, however, is the guy narrating the video. Listen to him. He sounds like he's in love with Grimlock. I'm talking actual, romantic, love. The kind of love that ?people write poetry about. I can only assume he walks around carrying a locket with his photograph in it.?

I have never heard someone sound more in love with Grim?lock than this guy. It is a beautiful trag?edy.

Activision has pooped out a new trailer for the highly promising Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, and finally has some gameplay footage for our staring eyes t?o gawp at.

There's some clips of Opti?mus Prime doing his thing, and the tiniest little slice of Bruticus in action. It's looking damn hot, as far as I'm concerned??. Damn hot indeed.

So yeah, give it to me now please.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is locked and loaded for an August 28 release date, according to an exclusive trailer on GameSpot that we'll probably be allowed to post two days from now. You can go look at it there i?f you want. It's got dubstep in it!

With Dinobots, Insecticons, and a whole host of gameplay improvements, Fall of Cybertron is looking set to be pretty kickass. If High Moon tops War for Cybertron, it's got a fan for life in me, that's for sure.

Everything about Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is bigger. Way bigger. Bigger stages, bigger enemies, bigger weapons, big robo-dino action and really, really big bots. Predecessor War for Cybertron was well received with its solid combat and great multiplayer, but last week High Moon Studios showed us that they hav?e even bigger plans for the follow-up.

Big.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)
Developer: High Moon Studios
Publisher: Activision
Released:
 Fall 2012

Good news: Fall of Cybertron's game areas are bigger. High Moon told us that they've heard fans' complaints on War's tight, corridor-ish stages, which really restricted bots' movements. For Fall they've opened it up quite a bit wit??h what they're saying are the biggest stages they could possibly make with the Unreal Engine. I was told that the first bit I saw, an already large outdoor air/ground bridge defense battle, was only a third of the actual stage size.

This first demo segment featured Vortex, a bot that can fly both as a helicopter and a jet. He was able to transition smoothly from one form to the next,?? switching nicely from air/missile attacks to ground/melee ones.? It was a short tease, but it already had me wanting to reach for the controller in this hands-off showing.

Speaking of big: In the next demo section we got to see Bruticus in action. Five?? Decepticons came together to control this massive bot, which, being about 80 feet tall, had no problem making quick work of the stage's small baddies. Of course, Bruticus' laser and wave attacks, spinning shield and flame thrower helped a bit. I can already tell that he's going to be a blast to play.

Moving on, for contrast, we saw Jazz in a very sniper-y section. He's equipped with a sort of grappling hook that works as a zip line, letting him move across this area's high vantage points to pick off fast,?? wall-crawling, spider-y bots. But unlike sniping in other games, this section moved very fast as Decepticon pressure came at Jazz from all sides.

Optimus Prime is big, but not nearly as big as the once dormant city-sized Autobot named Metroplex. Optimus now has the Matrix of Leadership inside of him, which lets him issue orders to Metroplex. Seeing a stage where Optimus worked to fend off a Decepticon attack was like watching a massive two-tiered ballet of destruction; Prime was killing it in the foreground while sending Metroplex to send a storm of missiles and structure-crushing melee attacks to e??verything in the background. Beautiful.

Finally, while not as big as Bruticus or Metroplex, Grimlo?ck is still a robo dinosaur, and that makes him pretty huge in his own way. His power is "big" enough that he doesn't even need a gun. Instead, Grim is all about melee attacks, starting out with sword and shield. Once he attacks enough to build up a rage meter he can transform into his robot T-Rex form.

I saw a segment where Grimlock had set out to save his captured dino buddy Snarl. Once he got his meter up to transform, he took on waves o??f Insecticons, smashing them to bits with tails and claws, and then breathing fire on them to make sure they were dead. You'd?? have to be dead inside to not want to play as Grimlock after seeing this.

Throughout these demo segments we saw some of the improvements that High Moon has planned for Fall. Fans of War can now expect story segments that let you take a break from fighting. They've also done away with the dual campaign in this sequel, opting to use slick, seamless character swapping to tell the story. In one segment I saw Starscream spying on a situation where Grimlock was he?ld captive. Players start the scene playing Starscream, but end it controlling Grimlock, with no transition m??arking the change.

Outside of some examples of character customization, which looks to be much more open than before, High Moon was not ready to talk about multiplayer. Anyone that played War for Cybertron knows to expect?? go??od things, though. Expect to hear more on multiplayer this summer.

By now you must be tired of the word "big." Sorry. It's already clear that Transformers fans have a bigger, better sequel to look forward to. High Moon Studios have gone big with bigger stages and bigger storytelling, but the clear?? draw here is going big with Grimlock, Bruticus and Metroplex. And s?omething tells me they have even bigger stuff up their sleeves.

Unlike its predecessor, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron will be passing on a PC release. Rather than guess the rationale, let's hear it directly from High Moon Studios. "There are a couple of reas??ons why that is," game director Matt Tieger told Kotaku. "Focus is one."

"I know that it's not a huge leap to do a PC SKU, but it is different. It's outside of our area of expertise, to be honest. I think there are a few things that are inherent in what PC consumers are looking f?or that frankly we didn't deliver good on."

Tieger continues: "It seems like so glamorous from the outside, but games are this constant struggle of tough choices; it just is when you're making a game. Despite the fact that it's an artistic creation, the technical constraints of how many resources you have and what you can do -- you really want to try and do the things you can do well." The reasoning behind this decision make??s me feel slightly better, I suppose.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron will feature a reimagining of the Combaticons and their combined alter-ego, Bruticus. Naturally, H?asbro is at the ready with a pocketful of plastic, and plans to release fiv??e new figures that can slot together and create the giant Decepticon gestalt.

When ?this turned up and I opened the package, my wife said, "They sent you a lunchbox? You're an asshole." That's a fair enough assessment, I suppose.

Anyway, I got this mad tat in the mail today. It's a steel box containing things I need to survive the events of Transformers: Fall of Cybetron. Inside is an "energon" drink carrying a c?u?te Soundwave brand, a chocolate bar that asks if I am hungry like Grimlock, and some booklets containing art and info.

Pretty rad for a Transformers fanboy like me. Can't wait for the game, either.

Some upcoming details for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron have hit the Internet (by way of NeoGAF) and there are some very exciting things on the cards. It seems somebody at High Moon Studios responded to all my harassment, with word that the Insecticons will play a part in the sequel.

As previously noted, the Dinobots will be in full force, and cold-hearted Decepticon officer Shockwave will apparently play a big role in the story. Other details include far larger battlefields with more enemies onscreen, a deeper customization mode for multiplayer, and a totally overhauled look for Optimus Prime and Megat??ron.

Oh yeah, and Gestalt Tr?ansformers (big robots made out of five smaller ones) will be part o?f the gameplay. Yes please!

Check out the (potentially spoiler-flav?ored) details below. I am pretty pumped!

  • Graphics are apparently amazing this time around. Alpha build looks like a finished War for Cybertron already.
  • More varied environments. Players will travel a ruined and broken Cybertron during bright daylight as well as night. Some battlefields will be very wide and open.
  • Many more enemies onscreen. Optimus Prime seen holding back a whole horde of Decepticons with a turret.
  • Multiplayer to feature deeper customization options, including interchangeable armor parts and more varied color options for both robot and vehicle modes.
  • Abilities are far more important in the single-player mode.
  • Optimus Prime and Megatron getting visually overhauled. Optimus looks more like his G1 version, while Megatron has spiky, Energon-infused armor.
  • Story has Decepticons overrunning Cybertron.
  • One mission sees Jazz using a wrist-mounted grappling hook to zip across various access points, similar to Spider-Man in recent games.
  • Shockwave to play a key role.
  • Dinobots are screwed around with by Shockwave, explaining why they already turn into dinosaurs. The Insecticons revealed as another of Shockwave's experiments.
  • Concept art shows Grimlock fighting an army of Kickbacks, Shrapnels and Bombshells, implying that the Insecticons' cloning ability will create swarms of generic enemies to fight.
  • Starscream has a price put on his head by the Decepticons and accidentally frees the Dinobots while escaping Cybertron.
  • Grimlock is a playable character. Unlike other characters, his style is almost entirely focused on melee. His transformation is apparently quite painful to watch, described as resembling Bruce Banner turning into the Hulk. He fights with his barbed tail, fire breath, and bites.
  • Metroplex, the huge Autobot city, will be playable. He can step on squads of Decepticons.
  • All five of the Combaticons will be playable and yes, they will form to create BRUTICUS, BITCH!
  • Prime can call orbital strikes, possibly from Metroplex.

Activision has today revealed (via Game Informer, which is basically just a big press release these days) Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, a sequel to last year's War for Cybertron. Oh, and Dinobat fans are?? in for a treat, because Grimlock is ??a confirmed character!

Game Informer has two covers available for its upcoming reve??al issue -- one with Grimlock, and ano?ther with Optimus Prime kneeling over a seemingly dead Bumblebee. Looks like things are going to get serious!

I loved War for Cybertron, and I trust High Moon Studios to deliver yet another hot Transformers title. I can't wait to see more, and I can only hope that if Grimlock's getting the love, we see some Insecticon fun on?? the Decepticon side. A guy can dream, anyway!
