Everybody Gets a Trophy Day

Sony has released a brand new update for its top-of-the-line gaming platform PlayStation 5 �The PS5 22.02-06.02.00 update adds a number of under-the-hood performance fixes and brings new sorting and categorizing options for the strangely compelling dashboard culture that is "Trophies".

When you now click the Trophy icon on the PS5 dashboard, yo?u can access a full list of all "still to do" achievements, so you can plan your next grinding session in style. Additionally, players can now pin specific challenges to the top of the list, or even snap the list to the screen, thus ensuring that the "Collect 100 hidden items" challenge that has been keeping you awake all night is now hanging overhead like impending da??nger �constantly prodding you with your abject failure.

Activity Cards have also been tweaked in the new update, and will now be sorted into generic categories such as by game, single-and-multiplayer activities, and online/offline activities. Again, this very minor tweaking of the system hopes to help players more clearly see what tasks ne?ed �that's NEED �p??erforming, ensuring that you never leave your couch and ultimately surrender to the television.

On a per-game basis

While not as high-profile as 1440p output and folder-esque Game Lists, there's a somewhat?? buried new PlaySt??ation 5 feature this week that will come in handy if you're constantly digging through your trophy lists. With a newly-added toggle, it's possible to "automatically show information for all hidden trophies" for any given PS5 game.

Instead of inspecting each ind?ividual hidden trophy and pressing the Square button to show its name and criteria, you can now flip a switch for a game's entire trophy list.

As shown in my screenshot up top, you just need to head to your PS5 Trophies section and press the Options button while hovering over a game �you'll see a "Reveal All" toggle. This PS5-only feature was publicized by YouTuber Mystic (via True Trophies).

I'll definitely be using this going forward (as long as I don't forget that it exists). I've never been one to care about my overall trophy count �I try to focus on games that are already clicking with me and then pursue the Platinum if it's remote??ly reasonable.

It's nice that game developers can tuck spoilers away inside hidden trophy descriptions, but plenty of people are just going to want to look them up right away, even before the first playthrough is finished. As ??always, options like this toggle are appreciated.

Also, yeah, I started playing the PS4 version of Resident Evil. It has been sloooow going.

Platinum Trophies used to mean something

The PlayStation Store has been cluttered with extremely bizarre and lackluster games for a while now. However, what was bad just seems to be getting worse. A handful of indie developers are gaming the system by re-releasing essentially the same game over and over �offering a new Platinum trophy with every “game.�These titles p?rovide nothing of value and only seem to dampen everything around them.

Games like The Jumping Fries, The Jumping Fries Turbo, and dozens more like it are crowding the PSN storefront, making it harder for customers to find what they want. Not only that but actual hardworking indie devs are being lost in the shuffle of these crappy titles, forcefully pushed down the list of New Releases, w??hich is PSN’s only real visibility tool for smaller games.

If you think just maybe these repeatedly-published indies are genuine in any way, just take a look at this video by Ky??le Bosman. He showcases how you can earn a Platinum trophy for all of these games in just a few minutes or less. These companies know exac??tly what they’re doing, and it’s affecting more than just the storefront and other indie developers. It has ruined an excellent meta-game for many PlayStation fans.

The hunt is over

Platinum trophies used to feel special. When a licensed game like Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs or Mega Mind was released, trophy hunters would sprint to play them for a nice and easy Platinum. However, what was considered an “easy Platinum�back then versus now is extremely different. Disney and Dreamworks games weren’t exceptional but at least they had some semblance to an actual game. You had to put in the work. They typically ranged from 4-10 hours to fully complete �a far cry from The Jumping Pasta which takes about two minutes and zero effort to Platinum. Literally, all you have to do is press up on the joystick and you’ll earn a Platinum trophy in Road Bustle.

Easy Platinum trophies used to be a needle in a haystack. Now you can’t go on PSN without seeing at least five near the top of the New Releases. The value of the Platinum trophy? has decreased exponentially. Before, trudging through average games for seven hours or so made that sweet Platinum trophy worth it. There was a sense of accomplishment. But now, dozens of Platinum trophies can be ??obtained in 20 minutes. Where is the fun in that? At this point, I’ve almost given up the hunt entirely.

If you’re curious about the developers behind these Platinum trophy schemes, the most notable ones are ThiGames and RandomSpin-Games. However, Smobile is by far t??he most egregious. The company has published 75+ games across PS4 and PS5 with at least 250 trophy lists in total (taking advantage of re?gion-based trophies).

For some more insightful information on the topic, I highly recommend checking out a few recent podcast discussions over at LSM. Ty Richardson (WatchMojo, LongplayArchive) compiled a ton of research and shares just how bad these devs are taking advantage of PSN. Then, an interview with the director of production at Atari goes over how these games are hurting their visibility on PSN. Lastly, here's a video by Motson showcasing some criminally easy Platinum trop??hies.

Thankfully, Nintendo and Microsoft aren’t allowing nearly as many of these shovelware titles on their digital storefronts (but they still need work). Unfortunately, all signs are pointing to things getting worse on PlayStation with Sony planning to lower the barrier to entry even more for developers to publish games on PSN. Yikes.

I hope Sony recognizes how this affects PSN, other indie developers, and players who enjoy trophy collecting as a hobby. Publishing Jumping Burger, Jumping Taco, and Jumping Hotdog on PSN isn’t valuable to anyone aside from?? a small group of weak-willed troph??y hunters.

Can't Cat-ch Me

When I cracked into Stray for the first time, I didn't think I'd have to worry about how best to zi?g-zag, juke, and even "drift" as a cat �but when a coveted trophy is on the line, everything's on the table. Half an hour of failed attempts and several slow-mo guide videos late??r, I've finally gotten Can't Cat-ch Me, a simple yet deceptively hard trophy.

It's one of the earliest trophies/achievements you can (theoretically) get in Stray, but I'm here to say that it might be best to save it until after you've finished t??he game. It could put you into a sour mood if you try to force it, so don't let it gnaw away. Come back later.

In the second chapter, t??here's a tense chase sequence on the city streets with Headcrab-esque creatures called the Zurks. They'll scurry, leap, and glom onto your cat, and if you don't shake them off q?uickly enough, that'll be the end of this journey. Try again.

In a puzzle-solving adventure game that is overwhelmingly chill, these little creeps are very threatening. They're relentless, as they're ??meant to be, and that works well in the context of the ruined city's story. But when it ?comes to this trophy, the struggle is real.

• Can't Cat-ch Me: Complete the first Zurk pursuit without being caught.

The chase sequence is about a minute long �how hard could it be? I feared th??e two-hour speedrun more th??an anything else, but that seems way less stressful by comparison; there's room for error, at least. Here, you have to memorize every rushdown and pray.

That's your home!

In general, zig-zagging is the play. But sometimes, it's best to strategically run into a group of Zurks and swerve at the last second. Other times, you might need to take a wide swing from one wall all the way to the other, to draw out certain Zurk leaps. It's not so much avoiding coming into? contact with them as it is making sure they don't land on top of you.

Of course, in practice, it feels like dev??ious RNG is pulling the string??s.

Are you too good for your home?

If you're going for the Can't Cat-ch Me trophy in Stray, I would recommend rebinding the run? input to something comfortable (not the default R2 on PS5), just in case you're stuck here for a while. Other players recommend increasing the sensitivity, but I kept it as is.

Misery loves company

Act like a cat (for the most part)

As we inch closer to launch day on July 19, one of the most fun games to think about right now is Stray, an adventure game about being a cat in a futuristic world run by robots. The trophy list is now out in the wild (courtesy of sites like Exophase and Powerpyx), and some of the descriptions give us a better idea of what to expect from Stray's scope.

Most notably, there's a pacifist challenge, one for meowing 100 times, another for being sneaky enough to go undetected, and a speedrun trophy for finishing the game in under two hours. From everything we've seen of Stray so far, I'm not surprised that it can be completed so quickly �and to be honest, that actually sounds wonderful. Two hou?rs seems like a nice runtime for ?a better-informed, more efficient second playthrough.

If you rush too much, you'll miss the collectibles: badges, memories, and sheet music. It's reassuring to know there's a reason ?to comb the city beyond just the story.

I'm planning to play Stray with my PlayStation Plus Premium subscription (heads-up: the PS Plus Extra tier also includes access to the game), and as good as it looks, this isn't the sort of experience I'd want to drag on and on. When it comes to game length, I always think back to Inside �a fantastic, g?ripping, potent-the-whole-way-through adventure.

Apart from PS4 and PS5, Stray will also be on PC �in fact, it recently topped Steam's "Top Wishlists" list. Clearly, a bunch of us would rather just be a cat right ??now.

Trophies are "optional," and supported games will have separate trophy lists across PS4 and PS5

Curious PlayStation fans are picking up tidbits left and right now that the new tiered PlayStation Plus plans are in effect in certain regions �namely, Asia markets, excluding Japan. In the Americas, PS Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium plans are launching on June 13, but we've got early info to glean about the priciest tier's classic PlayStation games. Continuing last week's story about Syphon Filter getting new trophies for PS4/PS5, other PS1 Classics have gotten full trophy lists, including Wild Arms and Ape Escape.

The trophy lists popped up today on the reliable trophy tracker site Exophase �and so far, everything has a platinum trophy. That said, not every PlayStation Classic will offer trophies (which would've concerned some players). Sony confirmed in a wide-ranging "all-new PlayStation Plus" guide today t??hat "this ?feature is optional for developers."

So, what are we looking at now that the service is roll??ing out in select regions?

The current PS1 Classics trophy lists range from 16 trophies on the low end (in the case of the taser-firing Syphon Filter) to 38 trophies on the high end (here's to you, Wild Arms). It's great t??hat there's some flexibility �most of us would happily play our old favorites on PS4/PS5 without trophies if that's what it took; that shouldn't be the limiting factor.

The PS1 trophy lists so far, courtesy of Exophase:

• Hot Shots Golf
• I.Q.: Intelligent Qube
• Syphon Filter
• Wild Arms

Ape Escape players will earn trophies for playing mini-games, getting new gear, and capturing 100 monkeys, while I.Q. players will need to score perfect clears and Syphon Filter fiends will shatter windows and drop a chandelier on an enemy. Don't expect anything too complex, in other words. Of the early Classics, Wild Arms has the most extensive, modern-fe??eling trophy list, which makes sense �it's a big ol' RPG.

I particularly like the " Spell Renamer... Namer..." trophy, whose unlock description is "Rename a?? spell. Be appropriate!" Another one is called "Ragu Has Been Sa??uced."

Other PS1 Classics are popping up

Other PS1 games available at launch in Asia include Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue, Jumping Flash!, Mr. Driller, Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, Tekken 2, Worms Armageddon, and Worms World Party. You can get a feel for the wider game list over here on this official page for Hong Kong, but ?Sony warns that "titles may vary by local market."

Obligatory reminder: some PS1 and PSP Classics can be pur??chased standalone (without needing a PlayStation Plus subscription) �and some games will be playable at "no extra cost if [you] already own the digital version of the title" ??from the old days.

When will new PS Plus games be cycled in?

Ex??pectations for PlayStation Plus Premium (known as Deluxe in some regions) vary across the board, but for $120 a year,?? some of us will need a really steady influx of games.

On that front, Sony says to expect two "refreshes" per month. One refresh, for the ??(lowest) PlayStati??on Plus Essential tier, will happen on the "first Tuesday of the month," in line with what we currently get for PS Plus when "free" PS4/PS5 games roll out.

"Another monthly refresh wil?l occur ??in the middle of the month with new games across PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium/Deluxe plans," according to Sony. "The number of games refreshed will vary per month."

With PS1, PS2, PSP, PS3, PS4, and PS5 games in the mix at PS Plus' top end, there are a lot of moving parts. I'm sure I'll pick up some standalone Classics and weigh my options, but I feel like things are already getting out of hand with unfavorable PAL vs. NTSC differen?ces for PS1 games on PS4/PS5. It's wild to have to worry about frame rates again when the games look nice, have options like rewinding, quick saves, and filters, and otherwise hit the mark. We'll see how it all shakes out in the US on June 13, I guess!

Trophy support is a big surprise for some of us

Classic PlayStation games are coming to PS4 and PS5 in June with the new $120-per-year PlayStation Plus Premium tier, and as it turns out, they'll have trophies �at least, some of the games will. In a tweet this afternoon, Bend Studio shared a surprise clip featuring an all-new trophy, "An Explosive Start," for the PS1 classic Syphon Filter.

In a response to a fan on Twitter, Bend Studio design manager Eric Jensen said he "helped out with a few of [the trophies], mostly naming."

In a follow-up tweet, the studio confirmed that there's even a Platinum trophy: "Excellent work, Agent!" Imagine the possibilities for y??our all-time faves.

Do classic ?trophies help incentivize PlayStation Plus Premium at all, or are they meaningless to you? I feel like a lot of people have been into achievements and/or trophies at one point or another in their life, but their importance can easily shift.

For me, yeah, trophies make me mo??re interested �especially knowing that "some" classics will be available for individual p??urchase on PS4 and PS5, per Sony. Better yet, "select games from the original PlayStation and PSP generation" won't require a new purchase if you previously bought a digital version. I'll definitely qualify for some of 'em.

While we're on the topic, circling back to March 2021, Sony actually has a patent for its way of awarding troph?ies in emulated games.

The PS1 and PSP games we know about so far

When Sony shared an "early look" at the classic games list for PlayStation Plus Premium, I did a double-take. The list seemed so bare-bones! On the PS1 and PSP front, we've got Ape Escape, Hot Shots Golf, I.Q. Intelligent Qube, Jumping Flash, Syphon Filter, Super Stardust Portable, Mr. Driller, Tekken 2, Worms World Party, and Worms Armageddon. Now, presumably, this is only a starting point, but if all (o?r even most) classic PlayStation gam??es support trophies, this highly curated list makes more sense. I fear a drip-feed, though.

Worth reiterating: at least some classics will have better frame ?rates and? resolutions, and "select" PS1 and PSP games will have "a new user interface with menus that allow you to save your game at any time, or even rewind the game if you want a do-over."

I kind of wish all the cards were out on the table, but we'll see how the launch lineup lands an?d how it might grow over time. Hopefully the inclusion of trophies isn't any sort of trade-off, and lots of good old games find their way onto PS4 and PS5 either way.

Long but not hard

You may be well aware, but in the unlikely event that you're somehow not: Cyberpunk 2077 releases tomorro?w. Technically, that might only be a few hours from now if you're playing on PC, as there's a global launch that hits at 4pm Pacifi??c. On consoles, it's midnight for every region.

We've played some of it. You should check out our Cyberpunk 2077 review-in-progress if you're interested in how it's shaping up. Or, you could just go in blind tomorrow. If you want the low-down on the achievements and trophies, we've got that too, courtesy of Xbox Achievements.

Surprisingly, for a game this big and detailed and long and full, Cyberpunk 2077's achievements don't look too overly complicated. There's nothing wild like necessitating a pacifist run for full completion. You only need to give it one playthrough. There's also nothing missable apart from using your lifepath dialogue option 10 times (and once you know that's a?? requirement, it'll be very easy to fulfill). For those of you looking for a low-stress time, you should be able to knock this all out on Easy, as there's nothing related to difficulties.

That doesn't mean it'll be quick, though. It kind of looks like you'll have to do everything in Night City to hit the 1000GS or Platinum trophy. Complete all gigs and NCPD Scanner Hustles in each region and then some collectible-seeming stuff adds up to a rather long game. The PowerPyx walkthrough estimates a 60-70 hour ??completion -- 20ish for critical path story and then another 40-50 for side cont??ent.

Now that you achievement and trophy hunters know what you're getting into, prepare to spend a lot ??of time jacked into the Matrix. This is about the Matrix, right?

I totally forgot I had the 'trophy video' feature turned on

In what can be described as a heartwarming Demon's Souls moment (we take them whenever we can get them!), a "first-time Souls player" named helloiamjack shared a video of them toppling one? of the early intimidating bosses, Tower Knight, only to realize that the DualSense microphone had picked up their vocal celebration when their PS5 created an automated 15-second "trophy unlocked" clip.

(There's a similar clip for Flamelurker, too. The player even takes a triumphant sw?ig of beer.)

It's a cute moment, one that brings me back to the first time I brought down this big lug, but it also serves as a reminder that, depending on your settings, your PS5 might be making loads of trophy clips.

After tearing through Bugsnax, Astro's Playroom, and Demon's Souls – and revisiting a few PS4 games in that free-with-PS-Plus collection – I found out that I had accumulated over 5GB of auto-cap??tured trophy videos. Whoops! I'm glad I caught this early since it was just a matter of selecting everything on my console for mass deletion, but for people with lots of intentional screencaps or videos, it'll be a matter of scanning a massive list to figure out what's worth ??keeping and what's worth trashing.

There's a few things to point out her?e that you may or may not have already looked into.

If you want to tur??n off the trophy videos, you ca??n do so in Settings (the gear icon at the top of the home screen). Head into Captures and Broadcasts, go down to Trophies, and toggle off "Save Trophy Videos."

If you want to watch or delete these video captures (none of mine seemed to pick up anything funny or weird), you can find them in th??e Settings menu under Storage – pop into the Media Gallery.

It's also worth pointing out that you can have the DualSense microphone muted by default. In the Settings, go to Sound, and then switch the "Microphone Stat??us When Logged In" option to "mute."

Insomniac's Spider-Man was pretty damn great. It was our choice for 2018's PS4 Game of the Year, and we're hardly the only outlet to sling some hardware its way. Inso?mniac has a lot?? of trophies in the case after that showing.

Hey, speaking of trophies! Sony's running a contest for anyone who has managed to beat Spider-Man on PS4 and earn the "End Game" trophy for clearing the third act. Folks who meet that criteria can enter into a drawing for an exclusive Spider-Man: Miles Morales LEGO minifigure.

Here's what you have to do: Hit this page and opt into the contest once your PSN ID has that trophy unlocked. They're giving away 1,650 minifigs, so maybe you have a decent shot at winning. The contest closes on Novembe??r 5 at 11:59pm eastern, but you have to have the trophy unlocked by October 29 at 11:59pm eastern. The promotion is only open to resid??ents of the United States.

You don't have to do them at the same time

[Update: Apart from Grounded and Permadeath, The Last of Us Part II is adding gameplay modifiers like infinite ??crafting, slow-mo, a one-hit-kill "touch of death," and a "mirror world," as well as wild-looking graphics modes. A motion aiming option and a toggle to turn off Listen Mode are also included.

You don't need to beat the game to start a Grounded run, and if you?? hate the idea of losing an entire playthrough on Permadeath but you like high stakes, you can use per-chapter or per-act checkpoints.

The Last of Us Part II will feel like a different game on Grounded difficulty. If you're up for the challenge – and you're ready to play through this draining experience again – the option will be here soon.

As spotted by PowerPyx, Naughty Dog just updated the trophies for The Last of Us Part II and there's now a separate category (that won't mess with t??he platinum trophy) called Grounded Mode.

There are two new trophies:

• Dig Two Graves: Complete the story on Grounded
• You Can't Stop This: Complete the story with any Permadeath setting

There are few games I'd want to permanently die in less than The Last of Us Part II, but Grounded is different. In the original game, the mode cranked up the difficulty in several ways including harsher checkpoints, less health and ammo, no more all-powerful Listen Mode, and super perce??ptive AI.

Naughty Dog did a stellar job with its meticulous gameplay and access??ibility features, so it's nice to see the studio expand them even further for hardcore players. Keep an eye out for patch 1.05.

At this point, I'm more interested in multiplayer (even though it'll also be stressful af).

The Infallible trophy is a Grade A platinum blocker

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout has devious trophies, but one, in particular, will always be elusive.

It's one thing to win – there are trophies for your first, seventh, and twentieth victories in Fall Guys – but winning "five episodes in a row" for the Infallible trophy? 0.1% completion rat??e, here we come!

One small tip: don't forget to grab the floating crown – literally. You have to grab it with your hands.

The developers previously talked about a trophy that's "??so insanely hard I don't think an?yone will ever unlock it" during a Reddit AMA. Today, in a follow-up tweet, Mediatonic joked that "Every time someone says 'five wins i??n a row are too much for the platinum trophy' we increase the numbe??r of wins by one."

After spending around four hours with the Fall Guys beta last week, I only came close to the cro??wn once, and even then I was the third-best player during the final round. There's relief knowing that I'll never earn the platinum trophy and shouldn't get my hopes up. That said, a few of 'em sound pretty fun:

• Victory!: Win your first Episode
  
• Flawless Victory: Qualify from a round without falling over even once
• Face First: Qualify from a racing round despite falling over more than 10 times
• Big Tease: Perform an emote just before coming first in a race round
• Fall Bae: Share a hug with a Fall Guy

• Style Points: Fall for at least three seconds before landing on your head
• Troublemaker: Bump into three people while rolling on the ground before getting up

The 2020 PlayStation Player Celebration

Sony wants us to play more games and earn more trophies in 2020 with an initiative it's calling the PlayStation Player Celebration. In exchange for hitting collective milestones – 125K games played and 500K trophies earned, to start – players will?? unlock exclusive PS4 themes and avatars. There's ??also a chance to win one of those ridiculous real-life platinum trophies that Sony has given out in the past.

Before you start any marathon sess??ions, there are a few dates and caveats to keep in mind.

As of February 18, you can register your PSN ID to participate in the PlayStation Player Celebration. Then, on February 24, the first community goal will open up. That's when you can con?tribute.

Goal One

• 125K games played
• 500K Trophies earned
• Reward: An exclusive static PS4 theme

Goal Two

• 375K games played
• 1.5M Trophies earned
• Reward: Five exclusive PS4 avatars

Goal Three

• 675K games played
• 2.7M Trophies earned
• Reward: An exclusive dynamic PS4 theme

Here's the fine print on what qualifies: "Every individual game you play for at least one hour (across as many sessions as you like) counts towards the goal," and "every trophy yo??u earn in any game you play is counted – and multiplayer game trophies count as double (up to a limit of six trophies per day)."

As for the engraved platinum trophy, it's not so easy. You'll need to show up on this website on March 17 at 11:??00 a.m. Pacific and be one of the first two people to correctly answer a question. The prize package includes the trinket, a hundred-dollar PlayStation Store voucher, and several game codes.

The only thing holding back the collaborative goals is raising enough awareness for folks to register in the first plac??e, but I'm sure all three milestones will be met all the same. People like trophy hunting.

PlayStation Trophy tracker Exophase has spotted English language versions of the trophies for the M2 re-release of Cave shooter ESP Ra.De, which launched in Ja?pan on PS4 and Nintendo Switch last week.

While this is no official confirmation of a localisation, (not yet announced by publisher M2), it at least gives shmup fans some hope that the psychic shooter will be winging its way westward in the near-future. Given that the events of ESP Ra.De. take place around the Holidays, it would be fun to see the game launch soone?r rather than later.

As ESP Ra.De. Psi, this re-release of the classic arcade title features overhauled visuals, re-recorded dialogue, and a selection of new modes and features. Never fear, old-school fans, the original 1998 edition is also included for your?? space-shooting pleasure. If we hear any confirmation of?? a release on these shores, we'll be sure to let you know.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the village. A recently-spotted PSN trophy list appears to confirm the impending arrival of House House's mischief-making adventure Untitled Goose Game on the PS4.

One of the year's best and brightest, Untitled Goose Game is a simple but utterly engaging story of an asshole bird that takes time out to ruin everyone's day. Combining stealth action and puzzle-solving, all wrapped up in charming audio/visual aesthetics, UGG won over an army of fans from its very first reveal in 2017, right up to its eventual launch in September of this year. 

Already available on PC and Nintendo Switch, developer House House had previously made mention of their desire to bring Untitled Goose Game to PS4 at some point the future, but given the discovery of this trophy list, perhaps owners of?? Sony's black box will be ruining gardens, hiding in boxes, and stealing hats before too long.

Mein Relief

An earmark of the new Wolfenstein games, at least for completionists, is that they are oppressively hard. Each entry has increasingly-tough difficulty-related achievements/trophies. Wolfenstein: New Order and Old Blood required beating on the Uber difficulty, the most challenging setting developer MachineGames came up with. The ante is upped significantly in Wolfenstein II : The New Colossus with Mein Leben mode; Mein Leben is the toughest difficulty with permadeath. Fail a single time and you're ??right back? to the opening cutscene.

None of that, surprisingly, is the case with Wolfenstein: Youngblood. MachineGames breaks the trend so that completionists won't have to break a sweat. Youngblood's achievements/trophies have released, and there's nothing related to difficulty. Actually, it seems like you're only expected to spend a good chunk of time with the game to nab everything. Also, there's very little emphasis on cooperative play for a game whose defining hook is that it's Wolfenstein but with co-op.

Without some Mein Leben nonsense in the way, you're (probably) clear to snag a platinum trophy if that's your style. Or, just enjoy the Soph and Jess Rollercoaster and don't worry about optional objectives. But, completionist types ??will celebrate like it's Victory in Europe Day.

Are you worthy of legend?

Devil May Cry 5 is good and Devil May Cry 5 is tough. This combination is about the best possible outcome for a Devil May Cry game. It's so wonderfully excellent that we awarded it a perfect 10 score.

However, anyone motivated enough to chase down all the achievements or trophies is in for one hell of a monumental task. Ahead of tomorrow's Devil May Cry 5 launch, w?e've gotten a peek at the trophy list. They ??won't come easy.

The obvious biggie is the "Worthy of Legend" trophy that requires beating every mission with an S rank on all difficulties except for Heaven and Hell mode. That means playing the game five different times, and being proficient enough to earn each mission's highest ranking. It's not easy being this stylish -- especially when you consider that Hell and Hell mode cranks up each enemy'??s health and leaves the player to die with a single hit.

Who's up for ?a challenge? Hell, who's physically capable of getting this platinum, nevermind the ridiculous mental dedication it'll require? The good news is that compared to "Worthy of Legend," everything else is a cakewalk.

Nothing here seems too unreasonable

Anthem has spent a lot of time as of late underlining its endgame content -- specifically how tough and rewarding it can be. As with any live game like this, it's a priority to keep players invested after they storm through the main missions. However, any Freelancers who are hunting trophies or achievements might not feel the need to ??stick around.

Anthem's trophy/achievement list has been found, and it doesn't seem particularly demanding. Everything appears to be attainable through story quests, gear upgrades, miscellaneous challenges, and exploration. There's nothing akin to clearing a raid with a full party witho??ut a single player dying.

The platinum trophy seems fairly easy as most everything on this list is anchored in spending time with the game, not in being particularly proficient. But, Anthem could throw us a curveball, and something here is deceptively hard. We won't know for sure until Anthem releases on February 22.

Aside from being an all-around great series, one reason Resident Evil has been so enduring is its replayability. Your first run is the warmup, then comes the real fun. The trophies for Resident Evil 2 (2019) are only going to help in that regard, and I'm hopi??ng to revisit the remake throughout the year??.

The road to platinum will include more than a few detours and even some potholes, as evidenced by the complete Resident Evil 2 trophy list. We'll need to survive the terrors of Raccoon City with Leon and Claire, do it again on Hardcore mode, and even earn S ranks ?for the dynamic duo.

Then there's weird stuff. The challenges that require a deeper understanding of the game, efficiency, and good old-fashioned planning. Can I clear Resident Evil 2 without taking more than 14,000 steps? I don't know! But I'm?? curious to see what that deceptively straightforward pedometer trophy entails.

You had one job, SNK...

As revealed by the game's PlayStation Trophy list, it appears that Fatal Fury head honcho Terry Bogard will be a selectable character in SNK's upcoming femme-fighter SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy.

Because there apparently aren't enough female characters in over thirty years of SNK games, the hat-throwing superstar seems to have bagged a spot on the roster which, to date, is yet to include B. Jenet, Vanessa, the Metal Slug girls, Elizabeth, Cham-Cham?? or any of a number of awesome gals from SNK's catalogue of arcade classics.

It is, however, worth noting that the final silhouette on the game's main art clearly features a svelter, longer-haired, Terry-esque shape. It wouldn't be the first time yer boy Bogard has taken on a more androgynous form either. Check out this art from the Japan-only Hero Kimi x KOF crossover title, which lau??nched earlier this year:

Mystery solved, wouldn't you say?

In slightly less WTF news, the same trophy list also revealed that Chinese fighter Mui Mui, mascot from SNK's pachislot title Dragon Gal, is also joining the roster. Mui Mui is not the only pachi girl turned King of Fighters entrant appearing, as Sky Pirate's Love Heart is also stepping up to throw down.

So, assuming these are the two final characters to be revealed, then the roster for SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy ?is now complete. A lot of fun character opportunities missed, that's a shame, but it's still a pretty great girl gang.

Nearly 3 years later and it would appear Fallout Shelter is finally making its way to the PlayStation 4. This news comes from a leaked trophy list for the game that has shown up on Exophase, a website that lets you track your ??PSN, Xbox, Steam, Origin, and Blizzard activity (including trophies a?nd achievements).

Notably, if this leak is real, Fallout Shelter also appears to include a platinu??m trophy -- which I imagine is great news for all you hardcore trophy hunters out there. Outside of that, however, all the trophi?es are pretty much the same as the Xbox One achievements.

If this trophy listing is legitimate, this will be a great excuse to once again invite random wastelanders to my Vault, only to immediately send them back out to find something that proves they're worthy of joining. But, with Bethesda's conference coming up this Sunday at 6:30 PM PT (9:30 PM?? ET), I'm sure we'll get more information and an official announcement then. Here's hoping they also ?announce a Nintendo Switch version alongside it.

For those about to grind

The trophy/achievement list for Monster Hunter: World h??as leaked a few days ahead of the game's release, and it indicates what we probably could've guessed: It's going to take a serious time commitment to get them al?l.

PowerPyx discovered the trophies list (achievements should be the exact same minus the platinum), and it indicates that nabbing everything will require scouring every corner of the world. There are a lot of cumulative-based tasks like earning a certain amount of money or hunting a certain number of different kinds of monsters. There's also one for reaching rank 100, which is presumably the highest rank possible. (Update: Commenters have i?nsinuated that rank 100 is probably far from? the highest rank.)

However, it's the crowns that are the most intimidating. Monster Hunter's beasts all have randomized sizes each time y??ou encounter them. If you're lucky enough to hunt one that's at t??he extreme end of the spectrum (either small or large), you'll earn a crown for your guild card.

Two of the trophies make use of the crown system. They're acquired by "Obtain[ing] a miniature crown for almost every monster in your hunting log" and "Obtain[ing] a giant crown for almost every monster in your hunting log." There will likely be 50-some monsters at launch (the final number isn't confirmed yet) and seei??ng ??these variations will rely entirely on RNG. It could take a very long time.

A crummy commercial!

While it was announced that there wouldn't be any microtransactions in WWE 2K18 this week, a little detail e?scaped unchecked about a few of the achievements/trophies. While most of the achievements are just normal run-of-the-mill ones there?? are three that stand out in particular to me. Just take a look at them.

Well, there you have it. Do you have what it takes to prove that your hunger to win is greater than the? general concept of hunger? Do you b?ring more reversals into a match than the Colonel brings herbs and spices to his chicken? Can you end your match before big tobacco will end our youths' chance at a healthy lifestyle? Then maybe you have what it takes to be advertised to!

In all honesty that last one is alright because it's a campaign to end smoking which isn't nearly the same as trying to get you to buy overpriced fried chicken but still, is this where we are headed? Sure Final Fantasy XV was a bit more egregious with their product placement but can't we have a little nuance from our corporate overlords? Unless this is their solution for taking out microtransactions in fu??ll-priced games that also sell DLC?, which I can't believe is something that needs to be praised. Regardless if that is the case I guess I'll bite this bullet and learn to love being slapped in the fact with advertisements everywhere.

Playstation trophies are? seriouz bizznezz for some folk, those who are willing to spend hours grinding games they don't like, or buying godforsaken titles that are easy to 100%. It has been this way for some time, ever since PSN trophies (and Xbox achievements) were a thing.

Well now, Sony are offering up genuine t??rophies for dedicated Australian hoarders. Four (non-platinum) replicas of the digital award will be up for grabs, one for each of the first players to "Platinum" four upcoming PS4 titles.

The first trophy in the Playstation Plus Platinum Hunters competition will go to the player who Platinums FIFA 18 from September 26. The other three trophies are reserved for Gran Turismo Sport on October 18, Call of Duty: WWII on November 3, and an as-yet-u?nannounced fourth game.

This is? a cute idea, and I hope other regions follow suit. But won't all the trophies just be won by journalists and/or industry types, who will be hitting these games days before the public, surely?

Regardless, it's a fun competition. So be sure to clear that singing fish with the dead battery, expired Subway coupon b??ook, and 15-year-old photo of y?ou at Disneyland from the mantle, to make way for your new house party conversational piece.

[Update: Publisher Square??? Enix released the following statement:

Life Is Strange: Before the Storm is coming soon. The prequel to Dontnod's time traveling episodic adventure launches at the end of August, and just like its teenage cast, Before the Storm seems pretty fickle when it co??mes to sharing -- at least with its Platinum trophy.

Push Square first reported that Before the Storm's final, Gold trophy requires players to beat an episode called "Farewell." The catch is that it's a bonus chapter only available to those who purchase the game's deluxe edition. Basically, if you want every single trophy in the new Life Is Strange, you'll need to dish out some extra cash.

In Life Is Strange's parlance, the whole situation is hella? ann?oying.

Granted, there's a chance that "Farewell" will be made available sometime after the game's release. For now, at least, PlayStation trophy hunters will need to take shelter in the deluxe edition of Before the Storm.

But without a number, how can I tell if I had fun!?

So last week we ran a crazy story. After eleven years straight, Ray “Stallone83” Cox let his prestigious “highest Gamerscore” world record slip through his fingers. His rival, Stephen “smrnov” Rowe was able to snatch the title from his grasp because Ray was too busy *ahem* consummating his marriage to his lovely new ??bride to keep up a champion’s pace.

The world is so strange sometimes. I just couldn’t believe what I was rea??ding.

There are people out there who still care about their gamerscores?

Personally, I haven’t thought about my gamerscore, trophy collection?, or Steam achievements in years. Yeah, sure, at the beginning of the Xbox 360’s life span I was just as into achievement hunting as anyone else. And it was fun. For awhile.

Then it became work. Focusing on achievements became a way of taking the joyous explorat??ion and malleability of games and turning them into a tedious task list. A burden to slog through rather than enjoy. As the console’s life wore on, I cared less and less about whatev?er games I “S-ranked” or 100%ed.

By the time the platform started to mature, I lost all interest in whatever number was attached next to my gamertag. Sure, I’d hunt the occasional bragging-right achievement, or novelty challenge that seemed interesting, but only if it seemed like a neat or stupid idea. I’d never go out of my way to bother inflating my score. Avatar: The Burning Earth held no sway over me, and I sure as shit didn’t bat an eye when Sony pulled 1000 Top Rated, &??ldquo;the easiest way to earn a Platinum trophy,” last week.

If I had to point to a final nail in the coffin for my achievement hunting days, it would have to be the jump from the Xbox 360 to the PS4. I spent a lot of time in Microsoft’s ecosystem and while I may have lost the taste for tracking down new cheevos after awhile, I did take som?e measure of pride in the ones I had collected. But then Microsoft had to go ahead and shit the bed with the Xbox One’s wonky launch and force me to switch over to Sony and the PS4.

What, I’m supposed to start all over again from a blank slate? And besides, trophies?? Really? What the hell is that all about? These are? video games Sony, put a goddamn high-score board on them, it’s not hard.

So my question is, do any of you out there s??till care at all about your gamerscore or trophies? Do you still try to grind out every Platinum, milk every point out of every title you pick up? Do you ever buy, rent, or borrow a game just because it has some gimmie achievements you can bang out in a night or two? Or are you like me and can’t remember the last time you bothered to look up the requirements for any achievement?

Or, are you one of the real freaky deakies out ther??e obsessing over your Ubi Club badge collection? I&rsquo?;d love to meet that person. It would be like shaking hands with a snow Yeti.

Yay?

For those of you who pray to the altar of the almighty Platinum, Sony has announced a new development in the trophy ??saga -- you can now sync your trophies "much more quickly."

Why -- for literal years -- it took this long??, no one will know. I always found it odd that Achievements unlocked instantly and posted at the very start of their run, and trophies had to manually be s??ynced (which sometimes took upward of a minute for me).

But based on the responses? to the off?icial tweet, everyone still really wants the ability to change their PSN name -- another feature Microsoft has had for years. This whole situation is really funny to me because Sony is probably really proud of this development and possibly spent tons of R&D on it, and everyone is just asking for another feature.

Starting today, Trophies will sync much more quickly so you can brag to your friends as soon as they’re unlocked! 🏆

I can't not attempt to fully clear this game

Just what are completionists getting themselves into with Yooka-Laylee?

As far as collectibles go, are we talking more of the Banjo-Kazooie approach, or Donkey Kong 64, what with its reviled character-coded pick-ups? I'm not expecting the latter case again, but I'm committed to finding all of Yooka-Laylee's trinkets either way. April 11 really can't get here soon enough. We've got some hints about what's in store thanks to the game's Trophy list, viewable in full right here.

Yooka-Laylee has 145 Pagies (the main collectible) to wrangle, 1,010 Quills (the common "currency" collectible) to comb for, numerous character upgrades to unlock, mine-cart challenges to best (I'm having terrible flashbacks), and even a few sup?er-secret treasure items to track down. Some of these details might not be new to you, but t??he accompanying thumbnails should be.

All in all, the list seems fairly straightforward, but I jus??t know that earning some of these collectibles won't be. I solemnly vow ?not to look up solutions.

More fighting than loving, though

Mass Effect Andromeda's complete list of achievements/trophies has recently leaked and things look slightly askew. Of the game's 56 singled-out accom??plishments, 16 are for speci??fic combat scenarios and only 1 of them is for humping. This is how intergalactic wars are started.

And to even get that one trophy, you'll have to do three times the humping that you had to in other games. The "Matchmaker" trophy is for completing three romances across any number of playthro?ughs (although it's not clear how many partners you can romance in a single play). Ryder's gonna be busy gettin' busy.

For those sensitive to spoilers, now's probably the time to look away as the whole list is below. One of the more commendable things about this set is the way that some of the tougher trophies are hedged by giving equivalent single- and multiplayer options. Not everyone has friends to play with (and they'll h??ave trouble getting that Matchmaker trophy).
