Twitch’s Summer of Rewards is underway and during the event, you can get your hands on a whole slew of in-game rewards for a long list o?f games. If you’re wondering which games have drops, or how to get any specific items, I’ve got you covered. 

The Summer of Rewards began on August 2 and is running all the way until September 30, with rewards obtainable ?for 13 games. You’ll get these rewards by either watching a stream for a fixed amount of time, or by subbing or gifting subs to a relevant streamer as part of the Support a Streamer (SaS) program.

It looks like N'Sanity but a streamer named KittyRawr is attempting to play Crash Bandicoot with a dance pad controller and is succeeding. She man?aged to complete the first three levels of the game before bowing out due to exhaustion.

"Y'all, I expected this game to be hard, but dude," KittyRawr said before getting disrupted. Towards the end of the session, Kitty said she "was a sweaty mess," likely due to how much she had to use her feet for button inputs. "??I'll be honest I?? was only able to get through the past three levels; it's rough."

Crash Bandicoot is funnily known as the Dark Souls of platformers as you need precise timing and awareness of what's happening around the bandicoot. The first game, in particular, is challenging. In our review for the N'Sane Trilogy, we say that this series has a "different razor-focused feel that a lot of bloated modern game ??design has forsaken." It also states, "The first iteration is definitely more rough, especially early on, but it does hit its stride, and by the time the second game rolls around, they’ve gotten it together completely."

The speedrun and cosplay streamer KittyRawr says they're continuing their playthrough in the future for "Round 2" on August 17. Hopefully, they can complete the game with the dance pad alone. She's finished the first three Resident Evil games, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, and the first three Metal Gear Solid games with this method of input i?n the past,. so completing Crash Bandicoot is with it is certainly possible.

After two notable companies cut ties with him, video game streamer Guy "Dr. Disrespect" Beahm has issued an official statement concerning his? ban from Twitch and the nature of it. In a lengthy statement today, the s??treamer confirms he was messaging a minor in 2017, but goes on to claim that "nothing illegal happened."

Beahm's ban from Twitch in 2020 was surrounded with an air of mystery, as very little public reasoning was given for the streamer getting booted from the platform. Recently, though, an allegation from a former Twitch employee seems to have broken the dam. The Midnight Society—a game development studio Beahm co-founded�a href="//jbsgame.com/dr-disrespect-dropped-from-studio-amid-new-allegations-over-twitch-ban/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cut ties with him yesterday following an investigation, and earlier today, headset maker Turtle Beach confirmed it was ending its partnership with Dr. Disrespect, who had moved to YouTube from Twitch. During this time, reports emerged reinforcing the reasoning behind the Twitch ban.

All the while yesterday, Beahm hosted a stream of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, before ending on a somber note th??at indicated he was, at the very least, taking a break from streaming. Today, he issued a formal statement on his Twitter, announcing his stance and confirming some details around the nature of the Twitch ban.

It's important to note that Beahm has been editing the statement since its publication, and you can view those revisions on X/Twitter. One consistent portion, though, is that Beahm is publicly con??firming that he was messaging with "an?? individual minor" in 2017. Here's his full statement on the matter:

"Were there twitch whisper messages with an individual minor back in 2017? The answer is yes. Were there real intentions behind these messages, the answer is absolutely not. These were casual, mutual conversations that sometimes leaned too much in the direction of being inappropriate, but nothing more. Nothing illegal happened, no pictures were shared, no crimes were committe??d, I never even met the individual. I went through a lengthy arbitration regarding a civil dispute with twitch and that case was resolved by a settlement. Let me be clear, it was not a criminal case against me and no criminal charges have ever been brought against me."

He goes on to say that, from a moral standpoint, he t?akes responsibility and says he should have "never entertained" the conversations; "that's on me. That's on me as an adult, a husband and a father. It should have never happened. I get it. I’m not perfect and I’ll fucking own my shit. This was stupid," said Beahm.

The statement goes on to lambast "remarks and labels" thrown around on social media. "I'm no fucking predator or pedophile," Beahm writes. He then apologizes to his community, exp??resses apathy towards his haters, and then ends with this:

"Finally, if you're uncomfortable with this entire statement and think I'm a piece of shit, that's fine. But I'm not fucking going anywhere. I’m not the same guy that made this mistake all those years ago. I'm taking an extended vacation with my family as mentioned on stream and I'm comin?g back with a heavy weight off my shoulders.

Streamer Guy "Dr. Disrespect" Beahm has been officially dropped from The Midnight Society, a game studio he helped co-found. The departure f?ollows an investigation conducted by the studio into new allegations surrounding Beahm's ban from Twitch in 2020.

On June 21, a former Twitch employee took to Twitter to allege an unnamed person was banned over use of Twitch Whispers, a now-defunct messaging system on the live-streaming pla?tform, to "meet up" with a minor at TwitchCon. No name was given, but many content cre??ators and reporters took it as a tweet about Beahm.

Beahm was banned in 2020, in a move that was understood at the time to be permanent, though the reasons around it were never given in overtly explicit terms. After the post emerged and started to get shared around, Beahm posted a statement on his own page:

"Listen, I’m obviously?? tied to legal obligations from the settlement with Twitch but I just need to say what I can say since this is the fucking inte??rnet.

I didn’t do anything wrong, all this has been probed and settled?, nothing illegal, no wrongdoing was found, and I was paid.

This brings us to today, when Beahm's studio, The Midnight Society, announced it would be parting ways with its co-founder. In a statement, the studio says it was made aware of "an allegation" against Beahm. It "assumed his innocence and began speaking with parties involved," and then announced that in order to maintain its principles ??and standards as a studio and individuals, it needed to act.

"For this reason, we are terminating our relationship with Guy Beahm immediately," wrote? the Midnight Society.

Beahm has yet to make a follow-up statement. During a live stream today, Beahm said he felt "burnt out" and expressed a desire to "start something new, something different." The streamer implie?s? he'll be taking a step back from broadcasting, and doesn't give an indication on when he might return.

Hey, remember that time Twitch played Pokémon? An amusing endeavor, I'm sure many of you will agree. Well, what if we did the same thing but with another game. Say...Doom? Oh man, that would be pretty amusing to see and not at all complicated to a??????????????????????????ctualize.

Well, would you look at that. Someone's only gone and done it. YouTuber ThePrimeagen has managed to make the original Doom capable of being played by simultaneous Twitch viewers; 1,000 of them, to be precise. Now, it should be said that this is technically an ASCII version of the cl??assic FPS, but it still stands as an entertaining ??experiment.

Needless to say, the above video contains a lot of complex information about how they were able to convert and compress the game in such a way as to make it playable via a chat log. I'm not ??even going to attempt to explain it, as the knowledge I have of programming and software engineering is on par with my expertise on hyperlocal economics in the region of �oh, I don't know?? �the town of Shitterton in England (look it up).

It's real

If you want to just see the part where 1,000 people play the opening section of Doom, you will need to pretty much skip to?? the l?ast minute of the video. If you are genuinely fascinated by how it's all achieved, I'll see you in 15 minutes.

Right at the end, we get to see the final result of ThePrimeagen's work, which involves tasking people in Twitch chat to control Doom. You all know how this work, which means you probably also k??now how this turns out.

There are a large number of hiccups along the way, including Doom Guy continually falling down a staircase before he's able to get up it. However, the effort is worth the wait, as the viewers do manage to complete the first level of Doom, tricky though it clearly was. Isn't technology ??p??retty cool?

Twitch's subscription prices have gradually changed this year, prompting an increase in late March. Now, the system will change once a??gain, altering sub and gifts in various countries. Here's a look into all Twitch Subscription prices, including an increase in July 2024.

What are the Subscription Prices for Twitch?

According to the Twitch Support page, subscriptions and gift prices will increase in o?ver 30 regions starting July 11, 2024. For example, US users will see a $1 increase, with a new price of $5.99 for the Tier 1 subscription.

The Local Subscription Pricing above correlates with the cost of living in the subscriber's area. One of the first alterations to Twitch Subscription prices began on March 28, 2024. Tier?? 1 systems within Australia, Canada, and the UK were increased. New subscription prices also impacted all three tiers?? for Turkey.

To get every Dead by Daylight Twitch Drop, you first need to sign up to receive the??m. To do ??this, you must work through the following steps.

• Visit Beh??aviour Interactive's websi??te and sign into your account.
• Once you've signed in, open the Connections Tab and select Twitch.
• You'll be asked to log into your Twitch account to complete the process.

After you've completed all of these steps, you'll be able to claim rewards for Dead by Daylight earned by watching the game on Twitch. To actually unlock the rewards, though, you'll have to settle in and get comfortable. They unlock gradually by watching streamers with Twitch Drops enabled play the game. This is a good time to see which builds work for the latest Killer.

The hours watched are cumulative. This means that once you've watched Dead by Daylight for a total of one hour across all your favorite streamers, the first Twitch Drop will be unlocked. If you're a streamer on Twitch and you're somehow managing to make money off it, it seems there's a bit of good news on the hor??izon. Well, provided you're based in the UK, Canada, Australia, or Turkey. However, if ??you're a subscriber to streamers, this may sting a little.

In a recent blog post on Twitch, the Amazon-owned platform? is going to up subscription costs for the above countries. Beginning March 28, Tier 1 subs will now be increased, except in Turkey, wh??ich will see all three tier prices rise. By quite a significant amount, I should add.

Twitch held a stream recently in the hope of clarifying some of the details. CMO Mike Minton says broadcasters with subscribers will still get the same revenue share. However, this also means the company will financially?? benefit as well.

Possibly more price increases coming?

As it stands, this is just an initial wave that Minton says will hopefully reward those who use the site for streaming purposes. This is especially important for anyone who makes a? living doing so. Obviously, this could have a knock-on effect for the subscribers themselves, who, going forward, will have to pay out a bit more if they wan??t to support their favorite channels.

As for whether this will roll out to the US and other countries, it's hard ?to say at this point. It sounds like Twitch is implementing it in the UK, Canada, Australia, and Turkey first on a sort of trial basis. If it works out to be beneficial, then we could see it come to other nations.

It's also important to note those days, as Twitch says, "you’ll keep earning the same amount per Prime sub as you do today until June 3rd when ??[Twitch will] switch to the published, per country payout rates." It's definitely worth r?eading through everything and watching the posted video if you feel these developments will affect you.

Last year, we reported that Twitch was introducing a new Partner Plus Program, which brought with it changes to h?ow streamers are paid. While it was met with some praise, it was also criticized for certain thre?shold requirements. As a result, the company has implemented a few changes.

In a recent blog, Twitch announced its updated payouts for Partner Plus. For starters, it's now a??llowing Af??filiated rather than just Partners to be included in the program. The changes also lower the threshold from 350 to 300, which means more streamers can qualify.

When the scheme began last October, it adjusted the 50/50 split to a 70/30 one, giving streamers more income. Now, with a lower threshold of 100 Plus Point (presumably? this is in relation to how many subscribers channels have), a new Level 1 entry point will give content creators a 60/40 split, while Level 2 retains the 70/30 split.

Twitch has received "clear feedback"

Additionally, when the Par??tner Plus Program (which is dropping the "Partner" from the name) was first introduced, it put a cap on? how much streamers could earn. In a nutshell, anyone whose revenue was $100k or more would go back down to the 50/50 split. This idea has now been scrapped.

The program was met with some backlash fr??om the community, many of whom were concerned that the 350 subscriber threshold was unobtainable for many channels. Add onto that the income cap, and it was not Twitch's finest hour.

However, judging by r?esponses to its Twitter thread on the news, it seems many are much happie??r with these new changes that will be coming into effect this May.

After a nasty 2023 for games industry labor, 2024 is off to a similar start. We already saw significant layoffs at Twitch last year, and now there's even more grim n??ews ahead, as? the Amazon-owned platform is letting 35% of its staff go.

A recent report from Bloomberg says Twitch is? due to lose around 500 of its workforce. This news was originally sourced from people who are "familiar with the plans."

Since this report, the company has issued a statement about the layoffs. A recent blog post acknowledges the "difficult decision" Twitch had to make, in which there will be a reduction in the "size of our workforce." It also confirms the num?ber of job losses will be 500.

Adding to this, CEO Dan Clancy says there will be a livestream going ahead on Thursday, January 11 at 1 pm PT for those who have questions. There's also a section that addresses th??ose who feel the?? decision will affect their role. Those who are not affected will still be sent an email from Clancy.

When will it end?

This also comes just shortly after ??Unity announced it was laying off 25% of its staff, which accounts for around 1,800 jobs. Indeed, this latest develope?r from Twitch could set another precedent �carrying on from 2023 �in terms of job uncertainty in the video game and adjacent industries.

We already experienced a ton of job losses last year, with thousands of employees being let go from otherwise lucrative development houses and publishers. Worse still, entire studios �such as TimeSplitters outlet Free Radical Design �had their doors closed for good.

We're only into the second week of the new year, and things are not looking good for those employed in video games. This is all in spite of the fact that the industry at large saw rising profits in 2023, according to data from Statista.

For those who want to engage in more adult-orientated streaming, it seems like Twitch is not the best place for it. However, the Amazon-owned platform clearly has to deal with it, and a new policy update aims to clamp down on broadcasters casting ?their broads, so to speak.

Over on the Twitch website, the company says that, as of?? yesterday, it'll be cracking down on any 'implied nudity.' As the po??st itself says:

This update is in response to a recent meta on Twitch in which streamers use black censor bars or other items to block their bodies or clothing, or position the camera frame such that the viewer is led to believe that the ?streamer is fully or par??tially nude.

As of January ??3, streamers will be required to make sure there is no suggestion that they may be hiding obvious nudity. The up?date specifies that, where required, "coverage must be fully opaque," adding that "sheer or partially see-through clothing does not constitute coverage."

Adults only...kind of

Given that Twitch is largely a place where peopl?e go to watch content creators play games or engage in creative activities, it stands to reason that sexual or adult content would not be encouraged.

However, the site recently updated another policy,?? which introduced a new label for streams classed as having "sexual content." This means content such as "erotic dances" and "fictionalized" nudity are allowed, providing they are correctly labeled. Full nudity...still a massive no-no, however. Also, streams of this ??nature are not present on the homepage.

As for the update to the attire policy, Twitch has made it clear that ??it does not want streamers to be presenting themselves with "implied nudity." The post states that such content will have its label changed to a more appropriate one, while repeat offenses will "lead to an enforcement action."

Despite being one of the biggest streaming platforms in the world, Twitch has more than its share of problems. Recently, the company announced 180 employees were being laid off, and now it's having to cease operations?? in Korea.

In a recent blog post, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy has said the service will shut down busines?s in Korea, effective February 27, 2024. The statement goes on to say that it was a "difficult decision" but the "the cost to operate" Twitch in the country is "prohibitively expensive."

Clancy explains that the company had spent time trying to reduce the cost of running in Korea, saying that the team "experimented with a peer-to-peer model for source quality." All efforts appear to be in vain, thoug?h, with the platform saying it's been "operating at a loss."

What happens to Korean streamers?

Obviously, this means that anyone in Korea who uses Twitch to broadcast won't be able to come the end of February. In the blog post, Clan??cy says streamers who "devoted significant time and effort into building their communities" will be helped.

The company will "work to help Twitch streamers in Korea move their communities to alternative livestreaming services." Sadly, those who are p??erhaps not on Twitch's radar will unlikely be given a hand.

Last month, it was also announced that Twitch was being dropped from the Nintendo Switch, owing to numerous and recurring issues with the app. The Amazon-owned service wi??ll no doubt continue to dominate the streaming market, but these avenues being closed off will n??o doubt be harmful for business.

A?mazon is reportedly laying off 180?? workers from its games division.

Sources told Aftermath that the company is eliminating the Amazon-backed Twitch c?hannel Crown Channel. The Game Growth team, whose purpose revolved around Prime Gaming, is also getting the axe.

Amazon itself confirmed these sources. It also sent a copy of an internal email to Aftermath from Amazon Games VP Christoph Hart??mann stating, "We’ve listened to our customers and we know delivering free games every month is what they want most, so we are refining our Prime benefit to increase our focus there. With these changes in our business approach come changes to our resourcing, resulting in the elimination of just over 180 roles."

This news comes not long after Amazon reportedly hit Twitch with another round of layoffs. While the ??previous round's?? purpose was to rely on outsourcing, Hartmann's email points to this one being about shifting focus, citing Amazon Prime's free game offers in particular.

Hartmann wrote in his email, "I know this is difficult news and the impact will be felt widely. It never feels good to say goodbye to colleagues. This isn’t a decision the leadership team came to quickly; it was the result of extensive considerations and road mapping for our future. We are proud of the work the teams have been doing, pushing into new areas with weekly content on Crown Channel, and finding more ways to help publishers reach new audiences with Game Growth. But after further evaluation of our businesses, it became clear that we need to focus our resources and efforts to deliver great games to players now and in the future.�/p>

Layoffs galore

These layoffs are just the latest in a slew of job cuts within the video game industry. Various studios like Digital Extremes and Ubisoft already slashed jobs, with Unity potentially joining soon.

In total, this is the third cut into Amazon's gaming division this year. Alongside currently laying off Crown Channel and the Game Growth team, there is the aforementioned previous round in October. Then back in March, Gamesindustry.biz reported that 9,000 Amazon employees we??re laid?? off, with 400 from Twitch.

Despite these massive cuts, Twitch is still rolling out new features such as Stories, which emulates features like Instagram's Reels. Other parts of Amazon's gaming division like New World also appear unaffected by these layoffs.

Still, this current string of l?ayof??fs is incredibly worrying, as it shows how fragile job security is in the industry. Hopefully, all affected will find new employment somewhere where their position doesn't feel precarious.

As outlined in a recent Twitch blog post, the Amazon-owned platform is providing a 6??0-day trial of Crunchyroll Mega Fan Premium membership. This means you'll get to watch all your favorite anime and manga shows without ads.

Of course, it's not as simple as just holding out your hand and waiting for the trial to drop into it. There are a few provisos before you can qualify??. Because of course t?here are.

For starters, the campaign is only being run for this month, so you have until November 30 to get yo?ur free trial. In exchange for the Crunchyroll membership, you'll need to purchase "two new Twitch subs and/or gift subs."

The type of Twitch subscriptions and gift??ed subs that are eligible include:

• New monthly subs (any tier)
• Multi-month subs (3-month, 6-month)
• Gift subs (any tier for any number of months)

Prime subs, existin?g sub renewals, bits, turbos, and a bunch of others don't qualify.

It's also worth noting that it's only available on "participating channels streaming in the Just Chatting, Art, and One Punch Man: World categories." You also can't ?qualify for the offer if you live in any of the following coun?tries:

• Russia
• Ukraine
• Cuba
• China
• Iran
• Japan
• North Korea
• Syria
• South Sudan

Twitch is pulling support for the version of its app currently available for the Nintendo Switch. The Twitch support page states th?at it will be “ending support�??for the Switch Twitch app early next year.

Those who currently have the app downloaded to their Switch will lose access on January 31, 202?4. For those who wish to download it, you'll have until November 6. Nintendo hasn't made any official comment on the matter yet.

The streaming service has been available in the Switch eShop since late 2021 and provided a “flexible Twitch viewing experience�where you can supposedly “watch, follow, or interact with any broadcaster or chan?nel live on Twitch,�according to the app. But many say that this i??sn’t necessarily true.

Reoccurring Issues with Twitch

Many fans seem to feel the app didn’t necessarily do what was expected of it, generally causing people to complain about the app’s performance. Users within the r/NintendoSwitch Reddit stated that? ??they were unaware of the apps existence on the Switch.

A user under the name throwmeaway1784 said, "This is how I find out the Switch even had a Twitch app." Here are a few issues ??many have found within the app:

• Not able to see that chat during streams
• Unable to subscribe to creators
• Cannot broadcast to Twitch from the app

Our own Eric Van Allen says he's used the app on occasion, but only as a last-ditch effort. Mostly, he says, it's a means to an end, but definitely not an ideal way to w??atch Twitch.

Although the Nintendo device will no longer be supporting the app, the company says that Nintendo is still a “valued partner�and they “appreciate all of the support the Switch community has provided to Twitch and our streamers.�/p>

Sometimes, it's hard to know what to make of Twitch. On the one hand, the streaming platform is experiencing peak viewership, but on the other, the company is reportedly laying staff off. Still, it's business as usual, and it looks as though the Amazon-owned company now wants a slice of t??hat social media pie??.

In a recent blog post, Twitch announced the i?ntroduction of stories to its app. Those who regularly use Facebook or Instagram will already be ?familiar with this feature. Essentially, Twitch has "made it easier for you to reach your community directly on Twitch, through short posts that expire in 48 hours."

This appears to be a work-in-progress and will have "more f??eatures in the coming?? months". And given Twitch's reputation for being a hotbed of hatred and general toxic behavior, safety measures are factored into stories "in a way that fosters a safe space for you and your community."

Not available for everyone yet, though

However, the post does make it clear that this featur??e is not rolling out to all users just yet. For now, they're "currently limited to Partners & Affiliates who have had at least one stream in the last 30 days."

There are plans to make it available to eligible users by the end of the week. However, streamers will need to "meet the minimum eligibility requirem??ents." There's always a catch with these things.

Whatever you think about the new feature, it seems Twitch i?s looking to keep its head above water by rolling out additional bells and whistles. It could be a neat way for content creators to stay in touch when not live. Equally,?? it could be another headache in an era already swamped by social media.

In the latest in a string of whirlwind layoffs in the games-and-games-adjacent industry, it appears there has been another round of layoffs at Twitch, according to Today Off Stream’s Zach Bussey via Twitter. 

“It appears there is another round of layoffs at Twitch today,�wrote Bussey. In a reply to this tweet, he clarifies this round is “significantly smaller than the first,�referring to an earlier round of layoffs this past March that affected 9,000 Amazon employees, over 400 of which were roles at Twitch, according to a report by GamesIndustry.biz. It’s an inopportune time for not only those affected, but also for Twitch, which will be hosting its semi-annual?? TwitchCon at the end of the month??.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, an unnamed source ??said these layoff??s were mostly affecting “the customer experience organization,�and were a result of the company shifting towards an outsourcing business model to fulfill these roles.

"Given the uncertain economy in which we reside, and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have chose??n to be more streamlined in our costs a?nd headcount," said Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, in response to the first round of layoffs in March. Jassy took over as CEO from Jeff Bezos in 2021.

These layoffs come as the next in a long line of industry shakeups, with layoffs at Epic Games, studios associated with Embracer Group such as Beamdog, Crystal Dynamics, and Gearbox Publishing, Team17, Naughty Dog, and Bioware, to name just a few.

In the last ten-to-fifteen years of innovation on Twitch, content creators have been trying to perfect the art of cooking up pure, unbridled chaos. From Twitch Plays Pokemon to Twitch Plays Halo, the concept of allowing a Twitch chat to control a game or an experience all from the comfort of their chat window has made a significant impact on the internet at-large.

But now, one vtuber has taken this idea to its logical next step â€?what if you let your Twitch chat control the appliances in your kitchen? Introducing uwu_to_owo, a self-proclaimed “mad scientist vtuberâ€?who has carved out a niche in the ‘let Twitch chat ?contro?l my kitchen appliancesâ€?genre. Most recently, this creator has built a “robotâ€?chef, connected to their Twitch chat, and programmed to cook fried rice. 

It did not go well.

In the video, we are told that, based on the chat command, the robot was programmed to do certain tasks, such as flip the wok (which, more often than not, resulted in the ??food going flying), season food, and stir the food. And, it goes without saying that, as soon as the chat learned the commands, they spammed them to the point where the creator’s stove was broken.

On the bright side, at least they don’t need to worry about being evicted for the noise or breaking their stove. In the replies of a post on Twitter, the creator explained that ??they own their house, so they just need to replace their stove. I guess there are worse problems to have. 

This is but one of the chaotic experiments being conduc??ted by uwu_to_owo. A casual glance at their most recent Twitch clips include “The Golden Blender,�where they try blending what looks to be a motherboard or other assorted computer chip that almost immediately sends the blender to kingdom come; also, there’s another experiment where they give the Twitch chat control of a butcher knife, which—let’s be real, is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard, but—sure is entertain?ing.

Despite numerous controversies over the years, Twitch remains the biggest platform for streaming and broadcasting video game content. However, the Amazon-owned site has recently tried to implement better features to help us?ers moderate their channels, and it? looks a new tool is on the way.

According to a screenshot uploaded by streamer and partner Lowco (thanks, Eurogamer), Twitch plans on adding a way for co?ntent creators to block banned viewers from watching their streams. The image depicts a new setting that "when enabled, banned users will not be able to watch your live broadcasts."

Currently, a Twitch ban only stops users from chatting, but they can still watch. Note that this new feature is not considered an IP ban, but Twitch's senior product manager Trevor Fisher says the company will look into feedback from streamers? with the hope of making moderation tools more powerful.

When are Twitch ban changes coming?

Updates to Twitch bans should roll out in September, available to all users interested in the new feature. We don't know what date exactly, but details should t??rickle in as Twit?ch implements changes from its Patch Note streams.

Blocking users from watching streams (and chatting)?? won't stop them from being able to watch VODs or clips, though. Just as Fisher no??ted, maybe that's something the platform could implement in the future with enough feedback.

With viewership up, amassing around 1.8 billion watched hours for July 2023, Twitch retains its position as the number one place for streaming content. Alternatives like YouTu?be Gaming are trying to compete, but the purple site in its current iteration still rules the market. For now.

Despite Twitch being embroiled in controversies (see??mingly on a constant basis), it's still the number one choice when it comes to streaming or watching streamers. This is evidenced by the fact that viewership seems to be on t?he up and up, with millions still tuning in each month.

Cold hard data seems to back this up, as a report from Gamesindustry.biz states that Twitch has recorded 1.8 billion hours for July 2023. This represents a 5% increase over June, with daily viewership having gone up since Marc?h of this year. The figures come from StreamElements and Rainmaker.gg.

On top of that, GTA 5 is still the number one game to watch, with 139 million hours logged. Other top titles for the Amazon-owned platform include League of Legends, Minecraft, CS:GO, and Dota 2. Basically, a lot of PvP and/or otherwise multiplayer games.

Recent Twitch backlashes

However, it's not all peachy for Twitch. The site came under fire from streamers recently when its new Partner Plus program was announced. Many felt that qualifying for the better revenu??e split was unobtainable for a lot of people who rely on the service for income.

Maintaining a recurring subs??cription count of 350 fo?r three months already sounds like a lofty ask. Add to that the fact that Amazon Prime subs and gifted subs don't count, and it's easy to see why a lot of streamers find this target difficult.

That said, from a viewer's persp?ective, things seem to be going pretty well. With close to two billion hours in total watche?d for July alone, gamers are evidently finding plenty to watch on Twitch. It's just a shame the company continues to disappoint many of its broadcasters.

Twitch streamer Kai Cenat has been taken into custody after a giveaway event hel??d in Ne??w York city took a turn.

Cenat and another streamer/social media influencer, Fanum, were set to host a giveaway in Union Square, as archived by The Verge. The day arrived, and a massive crowd ??reportedly showed up today for the event.

Cenat broadcast a video on Twitch, advertising PlayStation 5s and gift cards to give away, before leaving his bus and heading out. Things took a turn though, into what could be described as a "bit of a commotion." It's un??clear what sparked this turn at this time.

The New York Police Department mobilized with an estimated 1,000 officers, per NBC New York. Several videos caught glimpses of the chaos, ranging from what looks like people spraying fire extinguishers to Cenat apparently being taken into custody.

NYPD later confirmed during a press conference that when the crowd grew too large, they declar??ed it an "unlawful assembly" and began to clear the area. The NYPD chief of police Jeffrey Maddrey said officers filled a bus with arrestees, but did not confirm how many were in custody following the New York giveaway event-gone-south.

A spokesperson confirmed to NBC New York that Cenat and "numerous" other people were in custody. It's not clear yet if ??any charges?? will be filed, though Maddrey did suggest that "inciting a riot" could be considered.

A program for the Twitch elite?

Recently, it was announced that Twitch would be improving its revenue splits through what's being called the Partner Plus program. This means streamers will be entitled to a 70/30 split instead of the curre?nt 50/50, providing they meet certain requirements.

However, while it's generally been accepted that this is a step in the right direction, more than a few content creators are concerned about the upcoming program. Speaking to Eurogamer recen?tly, a number of streamers say they feel the scheme is "??anti-community," with concerns that a lot of people who regularly use Twitch to stream will struggle to qualify.

Twitch Partner Joesephyr said the new program is "unattainable for the majority," ??a sentiment that seems to be shared by others. They added that while it seems to be a "?gesture of good faith," the criteria that need to be met in order to enter into Partner Plus is something a lot of streamers will find difficult.

How does one qualify?

In June, Twitch said that come October 2023, the new program will go live. For content creators to be able to be welcomed into Partner Plus, there are a few stipulations. The first is that streamers must have at least 350 recurring subscriptions for three consecutive months. This does not include Prime subs or gifted subs, t?he latter of which allows viewers to pay for a subscription for another user.

This has come under fire as well. Twitch Partner Warwick says they don't want to have to ask their community for non-gifted subs. This is especially prescient in the current cost of living crisis, as Lomadiah says.

On top of the 350 recurring subscriptions, those who want to be part of the new scheme will also be capped if they earn $100,000 a year or mor?e. After this, the split goes back down to 50/50.

Mary Kish, Twitch's director of community marketing?? and production, believes Partner Plus is a way for streamers to challenge themselves? to reach these milestones, because "once you hit that milestone, there is another milestone, and it's harder." She likens the program to a "career lesson."

And it's only for Partners

Twitch is forever altering the way it allows content creators to make money, but it usually comes with a drawback or two. Take the recent changes to revenue splits. Some felt that this was a step in the right directio??n, but given that the new program comes ??with a bunch of boxes that need to be ticked, not everyone can benefit.

Now, there's a new feature that's being implemented, which could also be seen in a less-than-good light for most. According to a recent blog post, Twit??ch is introducing "Hype Chat," a feature that gives viewers the chance to literally buy chat messages. The idea behind it is to let users "stand out" in the overall chat.

Amounts that can be paid for messages vary from $1 to $500 (though Twitch says that strea?mers can set a minimum amount up to $100). Depending on how much a viewer pays will dep??end on the duration of the pinned comment, as well as character length, and the visual design. All this while affording the person streaming the ability to "earn a share of the revenue from each Hype Chat purchase."

But, as usual, not everyone will get the benefit of this new feature. The blog post goes on to say that Hype Chat is only available to Partners, so smaller channels will miss out. However, the Amazon-owned service does say that it? may look into implementing this "more broadly" in the future.

For some, though, it?? may be too little too late to win back support. With big streaming names like xQc and Amouranth already jumping s??hip to rival platform Kick, things are looking a bit tough for Twitch right now, though it should be noted that it is still pulling in millions of users each month.

Parental Advisory Explicit Content

Twitch is adopting a new range of labels and tags with which it hopes creators can bett?er classify mature content on their respective channels �The new tags, which are live on the platform right now, are the latest step in the company's efforts to improve community safety on the popular streaming service.

Initially, the site had a catch-all "Mature Content" label, but the new tags hop?e to be a little more specific as to what audience members can expect when visiting one of the sit?e's millions of channels.

The new labels are:

• Mature-Rated Games
• Sexual Themes
• Drugs, Intoxication, or Excessive Tobacco Use
• Violent and Graphic Depictions
• Significant Profanity or Vulgarity
• Gambling

While the Mature labels warn Twitch viewers of a channel's content, they are not a replacement nor a "Get Out of Jail Free Card" for anyone breaking the site's Community Guidelines, which remain unaltered at the time of writing. Streamers may receive warnings for failing to accurately label their content, with potential blocks for repeat offenders. Twitch continues to implement and experiment with rules, guidelines, and features in order to combat explicit content on the website. Of course, given the mammoth nature of the streaming platform, moderation has been a momentous issue for the Twitch team, which has led to false positives, user confusion, and the controversial application, (and some??times retraction) of security and marketing measures.

And it's capped as well

Sometimes it's difficult to know what's going on at Twitch at any given time. On one hand, the streaming platform has made attempts to remove hate groups. On the other, it's also been embroiled in a series of controversies. This is espe??cially true when it?? comes to the streamers themselves.

However, there is some good news on the horizon, as it turns out that the Amazon-owned company is increasing its revenu?e split, returning to the old 70/30 divide. The new program is being referred to as "Partner Plus." But before you start celebrating, there are a few provisos.

According to a recent Twitch blog post, streamers will be entitled to a bigger share of the streaming pot earned so long as they "maintain a sub count of at least 350 recurring paid subscriptions for three consecutive months." This means the sub count cannot drop below this number for that period of time. To clear any questions on that front, a report from PC Gamer says that Amazon Prime subscriptions will not be counted, so only monthly and gifted subs will work.

Going into more detail, Twitch also says that Partner Plus will cap the new 70/30 split at $100,000 US over a 12-month period. Once these condit??ions are met, cont??ent creators will be automatically enrolled in the program, which will come into effect on October 1, 2023. It's also worth noting that once you qualify, if your subscription count dips below the 350 sub threshold over the 12-month period, you will still be entitled to the split.

Twitch has notoriously had a difficult time pleasing streamers in the past, especially when it comes to money. The fact that you won't qualify for the Partner Plus scheme if you earn too much may seem bittersweet to some. There are probably a f??ew fam?ous names on the site that will automatically be discounted, but for the rest, it sounds like an opportunity to earn more of a lion's share. Providing you tick all the boxes, of course.

New rules 'created confusion and frustration'

For many streamers, Twitch is not just a place to broadcast content. It's a major source of income. Some creators build up huge communities that are dedicated to watching their channel, and this can lead to a successful career. However, the Amazon-owned streaming platform has once again become the subject of online controversy. Namely, there's been a change to its ad policy, which has not proven po??pular.

In a recent post on the site, Twitch announced it would be changing the type of "branded content" that broadcasters would be able to have on their channel. The changes indicate that streams will no longer be allowed to insert "burned-in" display, video, or audio ads. This basically refers to any advertisement that is ?a prerecorded sponsorship. It also limits on-stream logos to just 3% of the total screen.

As can be imagined, this has not gone down well with those who depend on the site for their streaming income. As reported by GamesRadar, a number of people have lashed out at Twitch, with the likes of Zach Bussey saying they may have to reconsider whether it's the platform for them. Charity events such as Games Done Quick would also be? affected by these changes, as their streams typically feature branded content to help them raise money.

In response to this, Twitch has posted an apologetic message on its Twitter account. The first tweet admits that th?e new branded content policy update was "overly broad," while one below it says the company did "not intend to limit streamers�ability to enter into direct relationships with sponsors." By alluding to the fact that streamers would not be able to display burned-in third-party ads, many felt that the platform was saying that only Twitch-approved advertisements would be permitted.

However, even after the apology, the damage appears to have already been done. Such content creators as Jacksepticeye have criticized the site for not talking to ??streamers in the first i??nstance. Others still have threatened to switch to alternatives, such as YouTube and Kick.

??Twitch says it will update the language on the n??ew policy for clarity.
