Depending on where your allegiances lie, it's exactly one month until next-gen arrives or just a little less than that. The PlayStation 5 launches on Novemb?er 12 and the Xbox Series X launches on November 10. It's close enough to feel in your bones.

These things never go completely without incident and the Xbox Series X already has its first official unboxing. Th??is fella got ahold of an Xbox Series X now that they've made their way to ??distribution centers, and did us the favor of showing us what's in the box.

This video is a great candidate for a takedown from Microsoft, so we'll ??give you the play-by-play. The contents are actually pretty minimal. As expected, the console is front-and-center and takes up almost all the space inside the box. There are some marketing materials like an insert that says "Power Your Dreams" lying right on top. The Xbox is wrapped in a black paper that electronics are often swaddled in. A separate compartment houses the controlle?r, HDMI cable, and power cord.

Is it exciting? Now, four paragraphs later, I'm prepared to admit that no, it's not really exciting. He drops the controller at one point, and that injects a sudden rush of adrenaline to the whole video. But, apart from some butterfingers, it's mostly e??xactly what you'd expect. The Xbox Series X package is extremely functional and light on surprises. 

This guy's probably excited, though. He has a dang Xbox Series X a month early. That is u??ntil Microsoft sends its reconnaissance agents to take it back.

Alright nerds, let's face the music -- we could all use a little more exercise in our lives. Wholesome skeleton-walloping action with Dad

Video games can have an effect on the way people think. I've seen this first-hand with my kid, who just turned four. He sees in a way that I don't. Things I take for granted? as harmless or meaningless can affect him for days, or even weeks. If he sees nothing but men in a few episodes of his favorite superhero shows (which happens? more than I realized), he might start to talk about how women aren't real superheroes. If he watches a show where a hero like Batman takes sadistic pleasure in hurting another person, he might talk about how sometimes it's fun for the good guys to hurt people.

Thankfully, his mind is just as open to corrective suggestion as it is to corruptive influence. It only takes the viewing of a couple of Marvel Rising shorts to remind him that both men and ??women can be superhe??roes, and a couple of empathy expanding talks to remind him that hurting other people for the sake of it is never OK. 

So far, the Guacamelee One-Two Punch Collection on Switch has been equally wholesome family fun. Both top-rated games feature clean, expressive art that's easy for a kid to try to copy, drop-in co-op featuring equally heroic men and women, and plenty of chicken-on-skeleton violence that has no real-world equivalents. Playing these games for 22 minutes a day with my son has offered all the pros of watching the old '90s Batman cartoon with none of t??he need for "But ??it's not actually OK to hit strangers in the face with boomerangs, son" post-show coaching.

We just picked up the game on Switch. Inspired by the relatively lengthy instruction booklet and two-sided mini-poster, my kid wanted to head outside and make a Guacamelee chalk drawing or two. Actually, we ran out of chalk pretty quickly, and had to make do with sticks, rocks, and pine cones for details??, but I think we did fine. 

The art in the instruction book has a clean-but-detailed accessibility to it that re?ally sparks the imagination. ??There are plenty of character pages with corresponding bios, covering the contents of both games. The vision of those halo chickens with guitars tells a story all their own though. No words necessary. 

There's a ton to dig into here, including unused production art, a list of achievements, and even a picture of Dan Adelman's dog. Dan used to work at Microsoft, then Nintendo, working with indies to get their games consoles. Now, through an unforeseen twist of?? fate involving a sizable betrayal and the loss of thousands of dollars, he's publishing games at?? retail, a?nd I think he's doing a heck of a job of it. 

There's a look at the bulk of what's included in the box: the instruction booklet, a double-sided "Where's Juan?" posted, and codes for Guacamelee 1 + 2 DLC and digital soundtracks. My kid is going to grow up with these suckers and I k??now as he gets older he'll be able to appreciate them on whole new levels. For now, both games are essentially interactive cartoons that are helping him learn to read, refine his hand-eye coordination, and?? let out his aggression on monsters as he pretends to be a chicken. 

In fact, he actually gets super-mad whenever I stop being a chicken in the game. It's all-chicken, all-the-time or he's off to ask me to boot up Kero Blaster or Kirby instead. Maybe this will lead him to think that neither men or women are worth admiring, and that only the chickens, frogs, and pink cannibal orb-men deserve true power in this world. If so, I won't be one to?? argue.

Quietly weeps

I kind of got unboxing videos back in the day. Honestly, I did. Back in the early days of YouTube and the Internet, we weren't bombarded by every detail about everything before that thing got into our hands, and so when someone got it into their hands it was cool to see that something taken out of the box for the fir??st time. Their continued success baffles me. Watching someone take something out of a box in this day and age is tantamount to watching someone... take something? out of a box. 

But the kids like it and if the kids like then Hollywood likes it and will make a movie about it, and that's what they're going to do. The film, called Unboxing, is basically just Goosebumps all over again. Ice Age: The Meltdown writer Jim Hecht put together the screenplay in which a young YouTube star opens her father's secret box as a stunt on her channel so she can get more viewers, and accident??ally releases a bunch of demons all over her small town. There's no confirmation yet, but evidently, the first half of the film is simply her opening the box and slowly showing us ever side of the cardboard packaging inside. 

Obviously, this i??sn't actually a movie about unboxing things, it's a movie for kids about monsters taking over a town and their attempt to stop it, but clearly the story and title are trying to capitalize on what "the youth" are doing on the interwebs. Maybe we'll get a delightfully quirky adventure out of it, but my guess is that, much like m?ost unboxing videos, we'll just sit through a bunch of nothing and gain little.

Official unboxing!

Yakuza 6 came out today and I'm pretty excited! Not only can I finally talk about the plotline in greater detail, but I also got my "After Hours Premium Edition" this morning! It is loaded with a bunch of goodies that any longtime Yakuza fan needs in their collection.

To show you guys all of the stuff, I made a short unboxing video with me fumbling through some plastic. I know these types of things went out of style years ago, but I just want another excuse to post about Yakuza 6 before all news shifts over to Kiwami 2. Anyway, hopefully any of you guys looking to grab this edition will be pleased with the quality of the items. The glasses, in particular, are very sexy?.

Nailed it

So Destructoid just got its Xbox One X hardware for review (which is coming la?ter), and yep, it's a box.

Inside this unassuming 1TB model is the actual unit (which is roughly the same size as the Xbox One S, just a smidgen smaller), the power cable, HDMI cable, standard controller (with AA batteries), an insert for a nominal amount of Xbox Liv?e Gold and Game Pass time, and an instruction manual. Setup was extremely painless -- I just unhooked the cables on my Xbox One S and re-inserted them, including the external HDD which I had transferred all of my games to. And that's basically all I can? talk about for now!

Enjoy a few shots of the Xbox One X compared to the original model (on the left) and the S (on the right), as well as the back of the X. Labyrinth is not included! It just rules, and I recently? picked up the UHD?? disc on top of the new coloring book.

Shrimp Doritos?

The recent rise in popularity of? all these snack boxes by mail have given people alternatives in their snack game and with plenty of different services out there, there's something for everyone. For people like me who are into things from Japan, there's plenty of different services I can try out to satisfy my cravings for far east snacks. One of these services that I recently got to try is the J-List Snack Box DX from J-List.com and I made an unboxing video above just to check it out..

The J-List Snack Box DX for October 2017 comes with 16 different snacks (including Melon Pan, list below) weighing it at over 2 pounds and it's a big box alright. It also comes with a $5?? coupon code for J-List. It's got some snacks that will have familiar flavors for westerners but just in a different and unfamiliar packaging. There are some snacks that will be new to westerners but nothing that would be truly out there that would cause some upset ?stomachs.

The most interesting item in the box that's quintessentially embodies the "weir?d Japanese thing" is the Garlic Shrimp Doritos. It's not as weird as it sounds, coming from someone who grew up on asian snacks that often incorporate seafood flavors. It wasn't fishy smelling or?? weird tasting and the garlic flavor that gave it a bit of a kick.

SMASH that box!

I think a little part of me died when I saw John Hardin, Sega's PR manager, smash the box of Yakuza 0 The Business Edition with a hammer. It was hysterical, but all I could think of was how damaged the game would be. You shouldn't damage Yakuza 0; the game is fucking incredible!

That being said, this quirky little video shows you exactly what a copy of this "special edition" will come with. It is a bit underwhelming, all things consideri??ng, but I do love the business card holder. I'm also a fan of bulkier boxes; it looks like the graphic design department put a lot of effort into this.

For anyone wondering, I have pre-ordered a copy of this. I know Sega gave me the game for review, but I can't pass up on getting some Yakuza-themed trinkets. I love the series too much to deny my?self that.

Looks comfy

Without a doubt, the most sought-after version of Fallout 4 is the Pip-Boy edition -- the one? that comes with a functional Pip-Boy (requiring an alley-oop from your phone). Those who secured a pre-order for this version can count themselves among the lucky, as these things went fast.

Less than two weeks from release, we have an unboxing video to show those people what's in store and to make everyone else a little bit sad. YouTuber ChampChong has an ear?ly look at the device, complete with everything that comes in the box including game disc and inserts.

But the star of the show is that giant piece for your wrist. Bulky and unwieldy should be expected from a Pip-Boy, and it seems to deliver that in spades. The official app hasn't been released yet, so there's no footage of it working completely properly. But, there's some sort of placehold?er screen that still makes the Pip-Boy look like a Pip-Boy. That should either hold you over or make the wait all that more unbearable. Sorry if it's the latter.

Intel decided to send us two giant boxes full of things, including its h??ot new 8-bit Intel Box Master System featuring wood side paneling to unbox on video. I couldn't possibly do a straight unboxing video -- that isn't my style -- so I put a bit of a horror spin on it, then promptly broke the system ??in more than one way.

I also got ?to take a look at Intel's latest processor, the Intel Core i7-67?00K, as well as its super fast 750 series solid state drive.

Let's take a look at what's inside last month's mystery box

At the end of February, I finally received? my long-awaited Loot Crate in the mail!

If you're not familiar with what exactly a Loot Crate is, it's a monthly subscription box full of nerdy toys and items. Each one has a variety of things to sort through including figures, coupon codes, and sometimes t-shirts. Once a month they even give away a huge b?ox of goodies called a Mega Crate, which is usually filled with top-notch gadgets and ?consoles.

One day, I hope I win one of?? them. For now, let's talk about all the stuff I got in this month's box!

First up, Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. 

Now, I had a hard time believing it wasn't exactly like The Hunger Games. However, after reading some of your comments, you guys all told me it was good. After looking more into it, it definitely sounds like a book I want to read. It also doesn't sound anything like The Hunger Games so it has my stamp of approval. 

It you'r??e not sure what it's about, the book takes place in 2044 and follows the story of a character named Wade Watts. Him, like most people in that time era, spend most of their lives in an online world called OASIS. One day Watts has a dream about an easter egg hidden wi?thin the game, put there by the creator of this virtual reality. Whoever ends up finding it receives the developer's entire estate along with full control over OASIS.

Cool, right?? I totally regret not buying th?is earlier. 

Next, we had this? little Munny figure. The point of them is to draw whatever design makes you happy, and eith?er keep it, or erase it all and start over!

They're perfect gifts to give to your artist friends. I for one am anything but an artist. As you can see in my video and the picture above, I had no clue what I was doing. What I did not know until days after, is that you can take off all of the marker. So, I may have another go at it and attempt to do a bit better than last time.?? No promises.

Third item I took out of the box, my biggest enemy?: The Hexbug.

I despise these things! They're scary and don't serve much of a purpose. You turn it on, and it sounds like it's going to kill you. It??s wheels, or feet rather, start to spin uncontrollably and you just let it have its way on the ground.

There are no specific controls w??hatsoever, so there you have it. A micro, terrifying robot with no cause at all. It did keep my little sister e??ntertained, though.

Second to last we had probably my favorite thing in the box besides the book. I have yet to play Firefly Online, but when I do, I'm for ??sure using this coupon code they threw in the Loot Crate.

It contains a code on the back that offers a premium ship. Short, sweet, simple??. Plus, it didn't attack me so how c??ool is that?

Last in the box, we had a game called Superfight.

Now, in the vid??eo I didn't go into much detail about it because I had no clue how to play it nor explain it. But, I was right. It's basically like Cards Against Humanity but with superheroes, comic books, and so much more in the pop culture universe. You have character pieces to play with and move up on the map (it's rolled up in the picture). It als??o came with dice, and different colored cards with random words on them. 

I gave February's box a 7 out of 10, mostly because I felt as if there wasn't a lot of stuff in there as usual, and most of the things included weren't right up my alley. I can't really draw, the Hexbug was kind of intense yet pointless, and I may never get the chance to play the game. However, the Firefly coupon and Ready Player One made up for all of that, in my opinion.

I know that not e??very box is going to appeal to me, but I hope that you e??njoyed everything in February's Loot Crate! Let's just hope March's doesn't have any terrifying mechanical bugs in it.

Your microtransaction money at work

People tend to hate microtransactions as a rule, but like any other tool, the relative quality all depends on how they're used. Make a game that suits a small but passionate audience who values the opportunity to purchase new content in small increments, and you're making everyone happy, especially if you use those profits to continue to improve the experience for your players. Use that money to send real-life stuff to various videogame industry people in order to promote your game, and I'm not sure who ?you're making happy at that point.

That's sort of what happened here. Samus and Sagat recently received a heavy wooden box marked H1Z1 on the side, filled with survival things like a hat and some beets. It's similar to the airdrop supply crates you get in-game if you are willing to pay a little ?real-life cash. So in short, Sony used real money that it made from selling in-game supply crates to se??nd Samus and Sagat a real-life supply crate that they can use to survive an in-game zombie apocalypse.

Hope you like Mega Man X5 references

Some people say GG is the best thing in gaming today. Others say it's all flash and no substance, existing to drawing attention to itself and nothing more. No, I'm not talking about that GG. I'm talking about Guilty Gear, the fighting game series from Arc Systems Works. The latest game in the series, Guilty Gear X3rd -SIGN-, certainly earns itself a few points on the "weird name designed just to draw attention to itself" column, but that doesn'??t detract from the fact that it's an amazingly well made game. The limited edition version is also pretty cool, as you can see for yourself here. 

After shooting the first two episodes of Samus and Sagat, Maddy and I took a few minutes to film this unboxing video. We did it in one take because, like dummies, we didn't realize that we could always go back and record the audio commentary for the video later. At that point we had also used up a?ll of our video producer's time, who promptly kicked us out of his house after the shoot. Still, I don't think we did too bad of a job. We definitely took the things out of the box, that's for sure.

December's Loot Crate exposed

When I first heard about Loot Crate, I didn't think it would take off. A company sends you random stuff once a month? For someone like me, that's a nightmare. The inventory box of my life is already completely full. Any time I get something new, I have to toss something out to make space. The last thing I want in life is another random drop to test my decision making skills. The same thing happens to me in EarthBound all the time, but in rea??l life, there is no Mach Pizza to call for storage assistance. You could say that they are the opposite of Loot Crate in that way. 

So that's why I didn't get into Loot Crate, but they seem to be doing just fine without me. With hundreds of thousands of subscribers, it's clear that they offer a service that people are interested in. But as successful as they are, we know that most of the people alive today are not Loot Crate subscribers, despite the fact that literally everyone in the world wants to know what's in those darn crates. If you tell someone t?hat there is a crate, they are going want to know what's in it. That's just human nature. ?;

With that in mind, we asked our pal Amber Hunt if she wanted to start a litt??le Loot Crate unboxing series with us, and she happily agreed. To be clear, Amber is not being paid by Loot Crate for this, and is not obligated in any way to say anything nice about their wares. She'll review every crate honestly and fairly, just as Dtoid does with the games we receive for review.

Cue people being mad because I think something could be better

After a Nintendo press event yesterday, I was sent h?ome with a review unit of the New Nintendo 3DS XL. I figured it would be a good idea to record my opening of it so that I could share my trademarked cynical indignation with you all. So, sorry about that. But, you get to see what thin?g looks like right out of the box! Shiny toys!

It's a pretty standard package, with the glaring exception of the lack of an AC adapter. Nintendo gave IGN the predictable company line, "Rather than raise cost of New Nintendo 3DS XL by charging consumers for a component they may already own, we are giving ??them the option to only buy if they need an AC adapter."

Cool. You know, except that this device is an upgrade of an existing device, and people might want to sell the obsolete model. Not to mention, people who don't already own a compatible power plug will be pray??ing there will be one in stock when they go to buy the New 3DS XL, and will probably get stuck with a shitty third-party knock-off.

The device itself is sexy. Shiny and smooth, but with ?a nice subtle texture. After recording this video, I gnashed my genitals against it, achieving exceptional erotic satisfaction. You can't prove I didn't.

There are a few changes in design that immediately screamed of improvement to me. The volume slider is now located on the left side of the screen panel, hopefully eliminating the problem of accidentally nudging it to maximum and letting everybody on the bus know you're taint-deep in Style Savvy: Trendsetters. The slot for the game cartridge has also been moved to the southern edge of the handheld portion of the system, hopefully reducing premature ejections??. However, I think it sucks this new edition still lacks any sort of latch or cover to prevent the cart from being loosed by a minimal, accidental n??udge.

There will be a more thorough analysis?? of the New Nintendo 3DS hardware coming to y??ou by Chris Carter soon. In the meantime, enjoy looking at my hands.

So it's come to this, Friday videogame news. ?Okay. You win.

I'm not usually one for console unboxing videos, but the glacier white PlayStation 4 is a thing of beauty. The console shown in this video from PlayStation Access is bundled with Destiny, though it'll eventually be possible to order the system on its own, at least in Europe.

Not quite an unboxing

Unless you have access to cool things like Daft Punk sets and laser beams, unboxing videos suck. They're al?l bad. I've even seen ones where people are eating while unboxing, and talking with their mouths full. Gross, right? Who would do that?

So we took all of the stuff out of the PS4 r?etail box to show you what it looks like. I don't know. It's really about the same as an unboxing, I guess. But at least we threw in some shots of the optional accessories, like the PS4 stand and the PS Cam??era. 

If nothing else, this'll hold you ov?e??r until week's end, when you get your own.

Microsoft invites gamer to launch party after retailer mix up

It looks like things worked out for Swami, AKA the guy who got an Xbox One early and posted an unboxing video. Not long after detailing his experiences on Twitter, his system was banned from Xbox Live and his video was hit by a copyright claim from Microsoft. Of course, this looked like a messy si?tuation for all those involved, so Microsoft has resolved it in a surprising way.

For those unaware, Andre "Swami" Weingarten received h??is console after ordering it online from Target, and due to retailer error received his system a few days later. Which was still two weeks ahead of its official launc??h. In a statement from a Microsoft spokesperson, they described what happened and how his system was banned.

"Due to a retail partner's system issue, a very small number of Xbox One consoles were shipped to consumers before the ??November 22 street date. We're pleased to see the initial response to Xbox One has been so positive, but given we are still putting the finishing touches on our games, UI and online services, as well as confidential partner and media agreements, these console units will be restricted from connecting to Xbox Live until closer to our launch date."

Major Nelson contacted Swami via Twitter and the two were able to work things out. Now, Swami will be an invited guest of Microsoft for the launch event next week. "Microsoft recognized that it was Target's error and not mine," Weingarten said. "They said a few days before launch I'll be unbanned. I can't go into too much detail but, basically [Major Nelson] says everything will be resolved. They'??re inviting me to the Xbox One launch event."

It's amazing how quickly this all got resolved, and kudos to Major Nelson for opening up?? the dialog with Swami. Though his console is still in a temporary banned state, he was positive about the console and pleased with what the system has to offer.

Here's a lively unboxing of the PlayStation 4 debug console from Computer Bild TV. While the packaging is obviously not what we'll see for the retail versions of the system, the unit itself is consistent with the consumer-grade models -- on the outside, at ?least.

Living vicariously through this guy. It's?? all I've got.

Literary debut of legendary illustrator

I've been looking forward to getting this book for a long time. When we featured The Sky: The Art of Final Fantasy some months back, we were told about the impending release of Deva Zan, Amano's literary debut that not only features a lengthy story that delves into his world view, but is ?also littered with hundre??ds of illustrations created specifically for the story.

Since I now have it in-hand, I thought I'd take the opportunity to flip through some of the pages to give you a taste. The book is currently available from Dark Horse for $49.99.

As an interesting aside, when talkin??g to the Dark Horse folks about how this book came to be, I was told that--much to the surprise of Dark Horse--Amano had hundreds of illustrations (some quite large) sh?ipped to the Dark Horse offices for scanning. It looks like it all worked out, as these illustrations are a joy to look through.

Ready to give Amano's ??literary debut a whirl? Is this not a brilliant way for him to bridge the gap for fans of his ??artwork?

Three volumes of art by Yoshitaka Amano

As promised a few days ago, we're unboxing Dark Horse's three-volume art book collection, The Sky. It celebrates Yoshitaka Amano's contributions to the Final Fantasy franchise by bringing together over 500 pages of concept art ranging from characters and scenery to monsters and more. And be??st of all? While the MSRP is $89.99, better deals can be found around the Internet.

The official street date has been moved up to July 17 to coincide with San Diego Comic Con. This set is truly something special, and I'm going to be pouring ?over it for a long time to come. My only gripe? Why is it that only the first volume uses a Roman numeral?

Remember that Final Fantasy IV Original Soundtrack Remaster Version album we mentioned a few months back? It's finally c??oming out, and we've got our hands on it early to give you a peek at what to expect from the set, including its exclusive sle??eve illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano.

For those who've already purchased it, expect it to ship next week on July 3, 2013. For those who haven't, as of preparing this post, CD Japan says it has 13 first press editions?? (which include the sleeve) left for? pre-order.

Oh, and that's "Troian Beauty" playing in the background, one of my favorite tracks ever written by Nobuo Uematsu. Anyone else got favorites from the Final Fantasy IV soundtrack?

Not safe for school... or work

The thing I am most excited about regarding Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory is Nobuo Uematsu's soundtrack which also features an appearance by his band, the Earthbound Papas. The OST is included with the limited edition version of the game that was sold exclusively through the NISA store (since ??sold out), so I thought I'd take th?e chance to unbox this beauty.

While you do get a nice lunch box, I don't suppose it's safe for school. Or work. As it turns out, I also really dig the art book inside which offers character bios and lots of sk?etches. See the above ?video for more, and watch for our review coming in just a few short hours!

Look at some metal and plastic

In a moment of madness, and due to having more money than sense, I ended up purchasing the Dead Space 3 Dev Team Edition. I didn't mean to? do it, it just ... kind of happened. Unable to change the past, ??the package arrived today, straight from the mysterious land of Ontario, and I unboxed it in a video. 

I don't k?now why I did that. It's just ... something we games media idiots do to justify possessing ludicr??ous amounts of plastic nonsense. 

Check out what's in the box, which is now currently out of stock through official channels. If you want one, maybe you can steal it from somebody weaker than you. Just pretend life is Fist of the North Star and might entitles you to stuff.

We also discuss the addition of multiplayer to Tomb Raider, take a look at the new gameplay video for DMC: Devil May Cry, and try not to laugh at the OUYA's dev kit unboxing video. Last but not least, Team Deathmatch has officially been axed from Diablo III PvP in favor of something that doesn't suck.
