While the PlayStation 3 had undeniable jewels such as Demon's Souls, Infamous, and Dark Souls, it's hard to compare the console to its older sibling, the masterful PlayStation 2. The PS2 was home to a library of classics we still can't seem to stop r?emastering or porting, and while the PS3 certainly delivered later in its life, it wasn't until the PlayStation 4 that we saw a more consistent life cycle of irrefutable classics.

The PS4 marked the return of the PlayStation in full force and, with it, on??e of the best video game catalogs in the history of Sony's systems. If you're a little late to the party, or just want to make sure you've hit the highlights, I've got a list rolling covering some of the best PS4 games you should play.

10. Horizon Zero Dawn

I remember audibly gasping when I read that Horizon: Zero Dawn was coming out in the same week that Nintendo released The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. I thought there was no way in hell that Guerrilla's new IP stood a chance against N?intendo's Zelda-driven behemoth. I was very wrong and on more than one front.

Horizon: Zero Dawn became PlayStation's not just the PS4's highest-selling first-party title ever. It currently sits at over 24 million units sold, just seven million shy of BOTW's numbers. Not bad for a new IP. Even more importantly, it more tha?n turned out to deserve the hype as it expertly mixes tight combat mechanics, exploration, movement, and astonishing visuals.

9. Ghost Of Tsushima

I imagine the pitch for Ghost Of Tsushima was just someone saying, "50% of the team voted for Samurai, and 50% voted for Ninja, so let's just do both.", as that alone would've had me sold. This game is a miracle. Making a GTA-scale game about the path of the ?Samurai must be quite the undertaking already, so making one that also included satisfying, fluid i?nspirations from Ninja seems impossible.

Luckily, Ghost Of Tsushima ended up the closest we'll likely ever get to Red Dead Redemption 2 with blades, bows, and Ninja secrecy. It's a masterful ga??me that lets players approach all sorts of scenarios in whichever way they choose, and the only guarantee is that they will never forget their experience.

7. Spider-Man

It was back in '04 that Spider-Man 2, the game about the movie, would inexplicably rock my world. It was the first to ?implement "realistic" web-slinging and swinging mechanics. No longer being able to stick your webs to clouds made a world of difference for me, and I'm not alone in remembering it fondly.

Lightning only struck again nearly 15 years later, when Marvel's Spider-Man outdid my favorite superhero game of all time. The new Spider-Man essentially learned all the lessons from the classic, built upon the??m, and even added a bunch of new stuff to create one of the best superhero games eve?r made.

*If you, like me, aren't too keen on the weird infatuation Peter Parker has with the police in this game, then consider just playing Miles Morales or Spider-Man 2 on the PS5 or the original Spider-Man 2 on the PS2.

5. God Of War

After a stellar trilogy and a few possibly canonical games that also ruled, the Norse Mythology-inspired God Of War sequel had some dangerously big shoes to fill. GOW was a mix of many things. There was the more personal father-and-kid dynamic from The Last Of Us, the Dark Souls-inspired combat, and the over-the-shoulder perspective from Resident Evil 4, but it pulled them all off like a total pro.

Though not original in itself, it's a unique mix of many elements that just work, and that naturally resulted in one of the m?ost solid games of its era.

Death Stranding Director's Cut iOS and Mac Screenshot

6. Death Stranding

I'll be the first to admit that Death Stranding let me down big time when I first played it. The plot varies from overcomplicated to nonsensical, and a lot of the actors feel like they're just there because Kojima re?ally likes their beautiful Hollywood faces, There's also the more action-oriented gameplay mechanics feeling almost f?orced in to appease anyone longing for gunplay.

Outside of that, however, Death Stranding has t?he guts to ask players to become errand kids and actually pulls it off by making the movement fun, the ?challenges dreadfully comical, and providing a vast, open world for introspection and mystery.

Death Stranding is a game like no other, the rare experience where you see that someone's authorial vision, wacky as it might be, take center stage. Though I maintain that Death Stranding w??ent overboard on many?? aspects, I believe it's better to have high-budget games taking similar risks than not.

Joker in Persona 5

5. Persona 5

Sadly, the PS4 felt a bit lacking in terms of Japanese RPGs, but Persona 5 is so good that it nearly filled that void by itself. Don't get me wrong. We also got FFVII Remake, which masterfully played with its formula, but P5 was a marvelous trifecta of old, new, and great.

Though it features a combat style similar to what we'd previously seen in many times before in many other RPGs, Persona 5 ?never fails to tinker with the classic formulas to come up with top results, even for this already usually stellar series. The cast? of characters and soundtrack are also legendary, but that should come as no surprise.

Chloe and Nadine in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

4. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

I considered Uncharted 4 for this spot, but, back in its day, this was the true next-gen Uncharted experience. Uncharted 4 looked better than anything before it, but it was, essentially, just another Uncharted game one filled with unnecessary changes? to its established cano?n, even.

Lost Legacy gave us a fresh new start with two beloved characters in a now wide-open world for players to explore. Though I'll never stop loving the other entries in the franchise, it'll be hard to go back after Lost Legacy.

3. P.T.

P.T. isn't a retail release, but it's only version of the project, so the demo counts. Even if it weren't, I'd probably sti??ll try to come up with a reason to put it on this list, as it's simply one of the best horror experiences of all time—not limited to just the PS4. It was also one of the most bizarre, surprising reveals in the video games industry, with its 2014 Gamescom reveal sending everyone into a detective frenzy to uncover the who or what was behind the demo.

Though it features arguably simple gameplay mechanics, P.T. offers players first-person horror like no other game. It is also, or was, completely free. We might never get anything of the sort again, as Konami pulled the demo from the store years ago after the project was canceled. So, either cherish your PS4 that ?still has it installed or never let others forget that it was once a thing—like I'm doing right now!

Dreams PlayStation Plus August 2023

2. Dreams

And if Ghost Of Tsushima allows you to be both a Ninja and a Samurai, Dreams allows you to be anything. Dreams is the game version of that very Reddit-like "I'm a gamer, I don't have a life, I have many" meme. It invites players to play a wide range of games made in Dreams and, if they are daring enough, or not satisfied with what was on the catalog, to make their games via the very user-friendly Dreams toolkit.

Dreams wasn't just a game but both a collection and a factory of great games. Sadly, Media Molecule has since stopped support for Dreams, though its community remains as strong as ever.

The hunter from Bloodborne

1. Bloodborne

This was my placement for Bloodborne as soon as I finished it, and it only got more cemented as time went on. What FromSoftware started with Dark Souls, it has perfected here. Bloodborne is the perfect mix of challenging gameplay with action fun. It has the best world ever devised by FromSoft, and one ?of the best, darkest, and most engrossing stories I've ever seen in a game. I'd recommend it to anyone with a strong stomach because of all the gore, yes, but also because of the choppy framerate.

I love it so much that I'd be totally down for a sequel, but? I'd be perfectly happy even with a remaster that adds nothing other than a?? better framerate.

No date for the PC version just yet

It looks like Sony is geared up to kick off 2022. Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed that the PlayStation 5 version of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection will go live on Jan. 28, 2022.

In a PlayStation blog, they broke down exactly what upgrades are coming to the PS5 collection that contains both Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. T??hree options are available for graphics: Fidelity, Performance, and Performance+??.

Fidelity will go for native 4K resolution, targeting a 30 FPS framerate. Performance, meanwhile, will aim for a 60 FPS, and if you're really looking for?? frames, Performance+ will target 120 FPS at 1080p, for those w?ith 120hz displays.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyJ7sRru7LM

Load times should also be "near instant," so jumping into the actual action should be pretty quick. Spatial 3D Audio will also be an option, as will haptic feedback and adaptive triggers through the PS5 DualSense controller. The Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection will be available both physically and di??gitally for PS5 at $49.99.

If you already own Uncharted 4 or The Lost Legacy, or have the PS4 digital bundle, you have the option to upgrade to the Legacy of Thieves Digital Version for $10. The upgrade option will go live on Jan. 28, 2022. Importantly, if you own a physical PS4 copy, you'll need to put the disc in every time you want to download or play the PS5 version. And if you got Uncharted 4: A Thief's End through PlayStation Plus, you're not eligible for the ??upgrade. Multiplayer is also not included in the collection.

No date has been set yet for the PC version, but that's just two weeks after another ma??jor P?layStation 4 exclusive hops to a new platform. God of War (2018) is set to hit PC on Jan. 14, 2022. PC specs and information for the Uncharted collection, however, will be coming in the future. Sony says it will be revisiting and revealing more about the PC launch of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves headed into 2022.

Fighting femmes back in action

Two rock-solid first-party titles are set to join Sony's streaming service PlayStation Now in the near future, as the publisher has revealed Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and Horizon Zero Dawn will join the service's digital catalog??ue on January 2.

Released back in 2017, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy was Naughty Dog's first foray into its popular adventure series sans regular protagonist Nathan Drake. Taking the lead instead are Uncharted 2's Chloe Frazer and Uncharted 4's Nadine Ross, who together embark on another journey of artifact-hunting, wall-hopping, gun-fighting action. The Lost Legacy proved to be a success, matching classic Uncharted gameplay with two great, engaging heroes.

Guerilla Games' Horizon Zero Dawn, also released in 2017, is a more fantastical tale set in the 30th century, a universe which has synergised ancient folklore with complex technology. It is the story of a young tribal warrior, Aloy, and her quest to discover her roots. While something of a sleeper title during development, Horizon Zero Dawn saw huge success on release, going on to sell almost eight million copies in its first year of release.

Dad of War now $20

Sony has just announced that seven new games will be joining its "PlayStation Hits" lineup. A collection of various popular and best-selling titles, PlayStation Hits lets late adopters get some great titles on the cheap. I know I've certainly used it in the past since I'm a cheap bastard. I also missed God of War last year, but I can't refuse it for $20.

I wouldn't say everything below is worth playing, but you can't really go wrong with these prices. You're bound to find something worth enjoying in each title, even if God of War is the clear ??standout. Each new game will be available for $19.99 (physically and digitally) starting on October 4, 2019.

Drake who?

From the very start, the Uncharted series has been intrinsically linked to Nathan Drake?. His wisecracking Indiana Jones quips have won the world over, catapulting?? Nolan North into stardom and forcing all sorts of rewrites and recasts for the feature film.

That changes as of Lost Legacy, the newest standalone?? game in the series that features the duo of Nadine Ross and Chloe Fraz?er. I think we'll be seeing more of them.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (PS4)
Developer: Naughty Dog
Publisher: Sony
Release Date: August 22, 2017
MSRP: $39.99

As far as the "new" cast goes, based on their first appearances it took me time to warm up to Nadine, but I was drawn to Chloe almost immediately. It could have been the fact that Uncharted 2 was more engrossing overall, b?ut I took to her personality and Claud??ia Black's stellar performance like no one else in the series -- an opinion that still applies two games later.

Even if this is your first Uncharted, it won't take you long to get attached to Chloe either. Within minutes we're thrus??t into an active warzone in India and the "Chapter 1" overlay appears on-screen, with no need for lengthy exposition or "the story so far" vignettes. We're fed information as we need it, without having to spend inordinate amounts of time on backstories and indulgences.

Uncharted has always had it easy giving us enigmatic heroes, but villains are another sto??ry. Usman Ally has been doing some great work recently in film, and he brings a gravitas to the role that elevates rebel-leader Asav above that of a generic adversary. He doesn't get quite enough time to shine, but the scenes he is in are imposing, and not in a mustache-twirling sort of w??ay.

Alas, the vast majority of your time in this not-quite a sequel but not-quite a DLC project will be spent spelunking in a semi-open world sans millions of Ubisoft pins thrown up on a map. Most of Lost Legacy takes place in ?the Western Ghats of India, providing the familiar "lost civilization" ruin setting we've become so accustomed to. You can go off sweet jumps with your jeep or just go on the critical path, but either way if you're sporting a PS4 Pro and a 4K TV, it'll look better than it already does in HDR.

It's not just the scenery though. At this point, given the breakthroughs in animation in Uncharted 4, Naughty Dog has action flow and platforming down to a science. Sequences that have Chloe and Nadine fighting at the same time are just as impressive, and shirk the hokey "double attack!" arcadey feel of similar mechanics from games like Arkham Knight.

These bits are exacerbated by Chloe and Nadine's strained relationship. Hearing them argue over who gets to take out patrols doesn't ever grate, mostly because of how interesting their dynamic is. Having the player, as Chloe, pick a lock with a relatively simple minigame only to have Nadine get impatient and just break a window is gold. Nadine plays it straight, and Chloe frankly does quippi??ng better than Nate. I didn't think this duo would work out this well but now I want to see more of them.

Lost Legacy's roughly three-quarters length of a traditional Uncharted allows for very little fat in this feast, but if you're so inclined Uncharted 4's multiplayer is back, with all 14 maps, six modes, and its original co-op survival component -- with the added bonus of a wave-based arena gametype. This is all coming on-disc or by way of an u??pdate for the original that will cause both games t?o interface directly. It's something I'll continue to ignore but it's there, nonetheless.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy proves that Naughty Dog doesn't need Drake to keep this series going. It's familiar in just about every respect, but given how much refinement has slowly crept up since 20??07, it's cemented itsel?f as one of the most reliable action-adventure franchises in recent years.

Plus an update on multiplayer next week

Naughty Dog has a busy couple of weeks ahead of it. Like magic, time has melted away to the point that Uncharted: The Lost Legacy's launch is a mere 11 days away. As if that weren't enough pressure, Lost Legacy's release will be accompanied by a big update to Uncharted 4's multiplayer.

Today, PlayStation posted the new gameplay trailer that's embedded above. It follows the formula that we saw at E3. Lost Legacy seems to nail Uncharted 4's penchant for absurd setpiece spectacle, but, as Steven pointed out, it's really the narrative that needs to c???arry this game. A trailer will never convey that.

As for the multiplayer, Lost Legacy isn't getting its own online mode. Instead, it's glomming onto Uncharted 4. Owning Lost Legacy grants access to Uncharted 4's multiplayer, effectively combining the two player pools. That's largely due to the fact that Naughty Dog continues to build onto Uncharted 4's multiplayer more than a year? after its release.

As for what's next for multiplayer, we'll have to wait until next week to get a proper look. Naughty Dog's holding a live stream event on August 15 where it'll show off the Lost Legacy update.

Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross are the stars

I really dig this trend?? of creating standalone expansions for bigger action games.

InFamous: Festival of Blood was one of my all-time favorites, and it was an easy thing to recommend to people because you didn't need inFamous 2 to play it. That's the case for Uncharted: Lost Legacy, and all of the?? footage ?we've seen so far is promising.

In this video leading up to its August 22 release, we get a little more insight into why the creators chose the duo they did and took the focus off of Drake, and even Sully. The four minute clip is somewhat ?spoilery (but not dramatically so), showcasing new gameplay and action setpieces, as well as hinting at what the story might entail.

I'm glad I watched it though, as Chloe is one of my personal favorite characters in the Uncharted universe.

Hands-off E3 preview

I ended up really liking Uncharted 4: A Thief's End because of its story. The wild action setpieces were well paced and there were plenty of smaller, quieter moments that resonated. Everything felt in service to a story about people and their relationships, the same threads that underpin classics like Indiana Jones

When Sony announced the standalone, Chloe-led Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, the trailer seemed a bit different from Uncharted 4.

But between last night's trailer and the 15 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay I saw in a meeting on the E3 showfloor, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy actually looks a lot like its predecessor. Chloe and Nadine still use the grappling hook that added a new wrinkle to A Thief's End's platforming. At one point the floors breaks away unde?r Chloe and she goes careening down a mud hill with an "Oh shiiit," which I hope is her "Crap! Crap! Crap!"

Even the giant armored vehicle with a mounted heavy gun that menaces Drake in the last game almost like Friday the 13th's Jason is back. There was a lengthy shootout deep in India's the Western?? Ghats ?mountains where one of those trucks managed to find enough traction in the rubble of ancient civilization to keep busting through walls like the Kool-Aid mad trying to fuck up Chloe and Nadine's day.

Actually the presentation peaks with the pair, after escaping briefly combat in an aqueduct, getting roughed up by that truck when busts through another wall. In a cutscene, the truck door opens and the game's bespectacled vi??llain, Asav, exits to reclaim an? artifact Nadine and Chloe knicked and deliver a menacing monologue about war and sacrifice.

The demo ended with a quick cut to black after he points a gun at Chloe's head, presumably about to kill her, though that feels a bit dramatically inert given that she's the main character. A Thief's End did add enough to the gunplay and its pacing that The Lost Legacy will probably be fun enough to play, but it's ??going to be Naughty Dog's story that puts it over the top if anything. We'll find out in August.

Audio snafus!

So uh, Sony! They started off E3 with a broken stream where the audio didn't?? kick in until 10 minut??es or so, and a pretty kick ass band with a citar.

All that fanfare was to set up Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, the sequel/standalone expansion for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. It's still coming on August 22 f??or PS4, but for now you can check ?out some extra story bits.

The Lost Legacy

So Nat?han Drake's story is done? Okay, onto?? DLC not starring Drake, then?

Previously announced add-on Uncharted: The Lost Legacy now has a release date of August 23, which is still a ways out and fairly uncharateristic for DLC. That's fine with me though if it has a ton of polish, and especially since it comes with a bonus pack-in of a free digital copy of Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy for select pre-orders.

Lost Legacy will be priced at $39.99, but you can also get it by way of the Thief's End Digita??l Deluxe Ed??ition/Explorer's Pack Season Pass.

Starring Chloe

Today at the PSX, Sony announced another Uncharted (sort of, as this is DLC), but this one thankfully? doesn't seem?? to involve Drake (too much Drake!).

No, the mysterious trailer showcased a woman in disguise, before popping off her mask to reveal Chloe, one of the standout characters of the series since Uncharted 2. It's called Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and?? that's basically all we know about i??t for now besides the fact that it's an add-on.
