The Communications Workers of America has announced that over 500 workers of Blizzard’s World of Warcraft development team have voted to unionize. Notably, the union is wall-to-wall, rather?? than just covering one of the departments.

Calling themselves the World of Warcraft Game Makers Guild, the union includes production, artists, engineers, designers, and QA. This was partially enabled by a labor neutrality agreement that Microsoft signed with the CWA before their acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The agreement also enabled ZeniMax’s QA to unionize last year, while B??ethesda followed suit with a wall-to-wall union j?ust a few days ago.

The announce?ment is part of an ongoing push to organize for better working conditions in the face of massive layoffs that have been? shaking the industry. While the industry’s problems with long working hours during “crunchtimes have been talked about since 2004’s a href="//ea-spouse.livejournal.com/274.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EA Spouseblog caught attention, unionization has become crucial in the face of problems like the encroachment of generative AI on jobs. Many people get into the industry out of passion, but they should be treated as fairly as any other worker. Here’s hoping this trend?? continues.

Update: This article was updated on the 13th of August, 2024, t??o remove a statement regarding Bobby Kotick. The original version of this article referred to a Wall Street Journal report regarding allegations against Bobby Kotick. The allegations originate from a now-dismissed complaint filed by the California Civil Rights Department (‘CRD in 2021. Investigations have found that Kotick did not turn a blind eye toward, ignored, condoned, or tolerated harassment, retaliation, or discrimination or acted improperly with regard to the handling of any instances of workplace misconduct. Additionally, in May 2023, Activision publicly released its inaugural annual Transparency Report, which further confirmed that there ?has never been widespread or systemic harassment at Activision.

Gotta unionize fast

The Allied Employees Guild Improving Sega (AEGIS) has announced the results of their unionization vote. The result is a resounding ‘yeswith 91 voting to form a union and 26 vo?ting against it. The vote now just needs to be certified by the National Labor Relations Board.

This vote creates the largest union in the video game industry. It will cover Sega of America’s Irvine, California branch and more than 200 roles. This comes as part of a continued and long-overdue push by workers in the industry to unionize for better treatment. Just this past January, Zenimax QA workers voted to unite.

//twitter.com/takesAEGIS/status/1678481??05652??0101889?s=20

Sega is largely a Japanese corporation, but like many publishers, they have offices all over the world. This past February, Sega of Japan actually gave its employees a 30% salary increase, but Sega of America didn’t follow suit. AEGIS has stated that its goals are for pay to meet inflation and for better staffing to prevent ove??rworking.

I’m somewhat surprised that the idea of unionizing has taken this long to catch on in the industry. We’re nearly two decades on from the “EA Spouseblog that exposed some of the horrible practices of the industry. This mostly involved unpaid overtime, but even after successful lawsuits, crunch re?mains a commonly used practice across the industry. However, because this is an industry that often attracts individuals and takes advantage of their passion, many workers are afraid to put their job on the line in an attempt to unionize.

Here’s hoping that?? this trend continues and we see?? more stories like this over the next few years.

Another studio sees organization efforts pick up

[Update: A spokesperson for Sega of America reached out today, April 26, with a letter sent out to employees this morning from Sega?? of America president and COO Ian Curran:

We received word yesterday that a petition has been filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) by various SOA employees seeking union representation. Union matters are new to me and SOA and we are investigating and considering the options available to the company. As I understand it, the petition filing means that the NLRB ?will conduc??t a secret ballot election several weeks down the road for employees who are in specific job classifications to be determined by the NLRB. These employees will be voting for or against union representation.

Some of you may support unionization and so??me not. That is your legal right. No SOA employee will be treated any differently whether they support or do not support unionization. We have a wonderful culture at SOA with a strong commitment to working together as a team. In my mind, it is the SOA employee culture that makes us such a successful company.

We will be updating you regularly so that you’re fully informed, understand what you can expect and what the NLRB process is about. If you have a?ny questions, please feel free to reach out to Human Resources. We want all of your questions an??swered.

Our original story follows.]

Workers at the Irvine, California offi??ces for Sega of America are organizing. A new union, dubbed Allied Employees Guild Improving Sega (AEGIS), has filed for a union election with the National Labor Relations B?oard.

AEGIS is partnering with the Communications Workers of America (CWA), the same organization that's worked with efforts at studios like Blizzard Albany and ZeniMax.

The union consists of 144?? employees across Sega of America's QA, localization, live service, marketing, and product development departments. This is notable, as union efforts have often been ??led by QA departments.

AEGIS workers point out shared issues across departments. The union's statement says that "??nearly a third" of Sega's long-time workers still lack full-time status, paid time off, proper training, or bereavement leave.

The union is calling for higher base pay foll?owing industry standards, with raises tied to the cost of living and inflation; improved, stable benefits; increased and clear opportunities for advance??ment; balanced workloads, schedules, and defined responsibilities for all positions; and adequate staffing, to end "patterns" of overwork.

Two workers speaking to The Verge say they have not experienced any anti-union sentiments from management. They're hopeful that Sega of America and its parent company in Japan will voluntarily recognize t??he union.

We've reached out to Sega of America for comment.

Ongoing organization efforts

This marks another push for unionization within the industry, as several studios over the past few years have worked to organize. Several under Activision Blizzard have done so already, though it wasn't always an easy road. The CWA and Activision Blizzard have clashed over unionization a few times already.

Microsoft has even signed a neutrality agreement with the CWA, saying it will take a neutral appro??ach to any employee unionization efforts at Activision Blizzard studios, should the deal go through.

As mentioned before, what makes AEGIS and the Sega situation so interesting is that it's made up of multiple departments, similar to Proletariat, which withdrew its union bid earlier this year.

Over 300 workers vote in favor of unionization

The QA department of ZeniMax Media has voted in favor of establishing a union within its office walls. Some 3?06 workers within the company's U.S. gaming division sought union??ization within a recently held ballot, overseen by the Communication Workers of America (CWA).

ZeniMax Workers United has already been officially recognized by company owner Microsoft, following a deal made with the CWA in June 2022 where the union regulator offered their ??approval in regards to the Microsoft/Activision Blizzard acquisition in return for Microsoft on any proposed union action And thus, MS offered no resistance and full cooperation regarding the ZeniMax team's motion. The ZWU is now the largest union in the global games industry

Microsoft has lived up to its commitment to its workers and let them decide for themselves whether they want a union," said CWA ?president C??hris Shelton in a statement to CNN. "Other video game and tech giants have made a conscious choice to attack, undermine, and demoralize their own employees when they join together to form a union. Microsoft is c??harting a different course which will strengthen its corporate culture and ability to serve its customers and shoul?d serve as a model for the industry and as a blueprint for regulators."

"In light of the results of the recent unionization vote, we recognize the Communications Workers of America as the bargaining representative for the Quality Assurance employees at ZeniMax," said a Microsoft spokesperson of the vote. "We look forw?ard to engaging in good faith negotiations as we work towards a collective bargaining agreement."

Zenimax Workers United is the third union to form within a AAA developer within the past 12 months. Back in late-November, Blizzard Albany's QA department voted to unionize, despite constant blowback from Blizzard management. And in May 2022, Raven Software's QA department also sought unionization, eventually forming the Game Workers Alliance. Other studios, such as recent Activision acquisition Proletariat, ha????ve also stated their intention to launch union bids.

Good job, folks. Let's keep the ball rolling.

Another studio moves towards unionization

Quality assurance, or QA, employees at ZeniMax Media are currently holding a vote on whether or not they should form a union. Over 300 workers are part of a group that's? now? determining whether it will join growing unionization efforts in the industry.

As the New York Times reports, quality assurance employees at ZeniMax are conducting a vote. Workers will be allowed to sign a union authorization card, or weigh?? in anonymously over electronic means.

This process will conclude at the end of this month, and will affect QA workers at studios like Bethesda. The employees are organizing under the ZeniMax Workers United ban??ner, working with the Communication Workers of America (CWA).

Employees are hoping to secure fair treatment for individuals and commensurate wages. Additionally?, they seek opportunities for advancement, accountability and transparency, and a voice in decision making around? scheduling and workload.

Unions in the games industry

Microsoft has recognized the legal right to discuss unionization and previously signed an agreement with the CWA to take a neutral approach to organizing efforts, should the Activision Blizzard acquisition go through. According to the CWA and ZeniMax Workers United, Microsoft has "remained committed to staying neutral" throughout the process.

A Microsoft spokesperson told the Times that the company remains "committed to providing employees with an opportunity to freely and fairly make choices about their workplace representa??tion."

This is hot off the heels of successful union efforts at Blizzard Albany. Recently, workers at the studio won the vote to successfully unionize, making it the second unionized QA team at Activision Blizzard alongside Raven Software. Microsoft is also still in the process of getting its acquisitio?n of Activision Blizzard approved.

Since the Albany vote received pushback in the form of motions to postpone validation, e?yes are on Microsoft now ??to see how union vote efforts at ZeniMax shake out.

The QA team has won its vote to unionize

Another union has successful?ly won its vote to unionize at Activision Blizzard. Quality assuranc?e workers at Blizzard Albany have voted 14-0 to unionize.

The team of about 20 QA workers voted 14 yes, with none against and 18 eligible voters. Via Polygon, the NLRB says three votes were challenged.

Parties involved have five days to file objections. Otherwise, the bargaining process will begin. The account for the union, Game Workers Alliance Albany, tweeted out the victory earlier today.

//twitt?er.com/WeAreGWAAlbany/status/159874450??3099195397

This makes the QA team at Blizzard Albany the second to unionize under Activision Blizzard, alongside the crew at Raven Software. Ra??ven's QA employees voted to unionize in May this year, marking a major milestone for unionization within AAA studios.

"It took an unbelievable amount of work and perseverance to move this fight forward," said Blizzard Albany associate test analyst Amanda Deep in a statement via THR. "With this victory, we’re advocating f??or ourselves and each other because we care deeply about our work and the games we make. Organizing has empowered all of us to fight hard for the dignity and respect every worker deserves on the job."

Blizzard Albany's QA workers announced their intent to unionize in July, working with the Communication Workers of America (CWA). The team received approval to hold its unionization vote from the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in October, despite opposition from Activision Blizzard. The publisher also pushed to hold off on validating the votes until its appeal on the previous decision had been heard. The NLRB officially denied the request.

A new union in the games industry

Formerly known as Vicarious Visions, Blizzard Albany is working on the Diablo franchise, including Diablo IV.

An Activision Blizzard spokesperson gave The Verge the following statement:

We are considering all options, with a focus on what is best for all employees and to provide t?he best games for our millions of players. We still believe our entire Albany team should have the right to vote. This is about fundamental fairness and rig??hts for every member of the team.

This marks the second Activision Blizzard union to form, in the wake of ongoing scrutiny of the publisher and a potential Microsoft acquisition looming overhead.

CWA pushing for QA team's unionization

Activision Blizzard continues in its efforts to push back against a unionization vote that has taken place within one of its subsidiaries. The QA team at Blizzard Albany recently secured the right to vote on unionization, against Activision's wis??hes, with the votes expected to be tallied on November 18.

Having failed to prevent the Albany team from securing the initial vote right, Activision Blizzard is now asking the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to impound the votes and prevent tabulation. The studio wants the vote validation to be postponed until its previous appeal against the case has been heard. Activision Blizzard argues that tabulating and confir?ming the Albany votes on November 18, ahead of its own case closure, could influence or prejudice the voter pool ahead of any potential "studio-wide" unionization process.

"We deeply respect our employees' right to choose whether to be represented by a union and to make an informed decision for themselves in a process where every voice is heard," said Activision Blizzard in a statement. "Given the significant impact this decision could have for everyone on the Albany-based Diablo team and the tight integration of our operations there, we believe strongly that each of the 107 eligible employees deserves to have their votes counted, not just the 18 quality assurance testers who are important employees but make up a small fraction of the t?eam."

activision blizzard albany union vote

A representative for the Communication Workers of America (C?WA) does not agree with the publisher, arguing that Acti??vision Blizzard is simply delaying the unionization process within the company walls.

"Sadly, it's no surprise that a company that has repeatedly tried to silence its employees, including by hiding reports of sexual violence, would want to muzzle workers' voices once again by trying to stop them from voting in a union election." said the CWA's Sar??a Steffens in a statement to GamesIndustry.biz.

"Workers have concluded that they need to protect themselves from this abusive employer by ??joining together into a strong union. Instead of staying neutral, Acti??vision's management continues to present the same failing arguments in a desperate attempt to interfere with workers' legal right to make their own decisions about forming a union and negotiating a collective bargaining agreement."

"We are confident in the NLRB's response to these frivolous requests, and we will continue to push for Activision Blizzard employees??' right to organize without delay."

Studio broke ground for unionization in the industry

Independent developer Vodeo Games has revealed that it will be closing its doors in the near future. The sad news was announced on Twitter just yesterday and comes less than a year after the studio's debut release, anthropomorphic adventure Beast Breaker.

"The story is unfortunately a familiar one for small studios," explained the studio. "Despite a yea?r of avid efforts, we've been un?able to secure funding for our next project from publishers and investors. As such, we've run out of funds and aren't able to keep the team together and there is simply no Vodeo without our incredible team."

//twitter.com/VodeoGames/status/156??7581119608156161?s=20&t=KUHIarDvnW6dXeYOfUa7yw

While the closure of any indie outlet is an unhappy affair, Vodeo's departure stings in particular due to the fact that the developer was deep in the process of becoming the first-ever fully unionized studio within the games industry. The Communic?ations Workers of America (CWA), ??which already covers sectors including healthcare and telecommunications, made its debut in the games industry in December 2021, signing up for a voluntary recognition with Vodeo.

The newly formed Vodeo Workers United acknowledged the studio's closure on its own Twitter account, noting that it will continue to fight for workers' rights and to show solidarity with other gaming studios currently attempting to seek official recognition in the unionization market. It is incredibly sad to see Vodeo Games forced to call time after breaking such ground, but, sadly, ??this looks like the team's only option.

Beast Breaker is available now on Nintendo Switch and Epic Game Store. A Steam port is currently in development and will release before studio closure. As previously noted, the fight for workers' rights in any and all sectors is a tough and arduous, but absolutely necessary fight. Kudos and solidarity to the staff at Vodeo Games for t??aking such a groundbreaking step, and here's to wishing the talent all of the best in their respective futures in the industry.

Nearly 1,100 workers are moving to full-time roles

Activision Blizzard is moving its U.S.-based QA workers into full-time roles. The company has announced that QA employees will become full-??time, with full benefits, starting July 1.

QA employees at Activision Blizzard had previously pushed for this move, including those at Raven Software. The QA team at Raven held a strike, which ended with the team voting in favor of unionization.

Nearly 1,100 workers will be affected, which will push a pretty large number of workers into full-time roles at the company. Activision Blizzard is also raising its minimum hourly pay for these positions up to $20/hour, as of April 17. An Activision Blizzard spokesperson told Polygon that both Activision and Blizzard will continue to use external pa??rtner support for QA workers when workload exceed?s the team's bandwidth.

An Activision Blizzard spokesperson tells Bloomberg that Raven worker??s, however, won't receive new pay initiatives due to legal obligations under the National Labor Relations Act. "Wh?ether Raven workers choose to unionize has nothing to do with the salary increases elsewhere for Activision’s QA workers," the spokesperson told Bloomberg.

Moving QA workers into full-time roles was one of the Raven QA team's original demands. That statement also includes a call to offer the same to several individuals who were laid off from the company last December. In a statement to GI Biz, an Activision Blizzard representative said the conversion of workers to full-time "does not have ??any relation to the petition pending at Raven studio."

"The Raven situation is limited to Raven," the spokesperson told GI Biz. "The testers whose con?tracts weren't extended were welcome then, and now, to apply for any jobs at the company."

A push for QA recognition

It's a step forward for QA workers at the company, though Activision Blizzard workers are still protesting other issues too. Most recently, workers at Activision Blizzar?d spoke out against the removal of a vaccine mandate as studios returned to the office.

The publisher later changed its decision, allowing its studios to create their own policies. Several did, and have established vaccination ?and testing policies.

//twitter.com/ABetterABK/status/151213930??5954824193

The ABK Workers Alliance issued a response today, saying it is overjoyed. "A year ago, we made a promise to make A Better ABK," the alliance said today. "Little by little, we are accomplishing that goal.?? This is the power of collective action. When you work with your co-workers for the betterment of your workplace,? the impossible becomes possible."

Resources from the strike fund will be used for future organizing efforts. Following last Friday's announcement, an Activision Blizzard spokesperson said that the ??company is "carefully reviewing the request for voluntary recognition from the CWA."

Microsoft recentl?y announced its intent to purchase Activision Blizzard for a landmark $68.7 billion. The latter has been under scrutiny as reports have come out about its internal workplace culture, in the wake of a lawsuit from the California DFEH. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick is currently set to stay on until the ink dries on the Microsoft deal, though a Wall Street Journal report indicates that Kotick is "expected" to leave the company once the deal is ?done.

"The news of Activision's acquisition by Microsoft is surprising, but does not change the goals of the ABK Worker's Alliance," the workers group said in response to the acquisition. "We re??main committed to fi??ghting for workplace improvements and the rights of our employees regardless of who is financially in control of the company."

The QA testers are calling on Activision Blizzard to voluntarily recognize the union

Quality assurance (QA) workers at Raven Software have formed a union. The group, which has been holding a strike since December over sudden? layoffs of its team members, is now calling for parent company Activision Blizzard to voluntarily recognize the union.

The union at Raven Software, Game Workers Alliance, is unionizing with the Communication Workers of America. A CWA representative told Polygon that the union has the sup?port of 78% of eligible workers. In statements, both Raven employees and CWA reps call for volun?tary recognition.

//twitter.com/WeAreGWA/status/1484550917449945089

Raven Software QA workers have been on strike for weeks now, in response to layoffs affecting the QA department in December. It was one situation on a pile of issues at Activision Blizzard, as it was already under scrutiny for other allegations of workplace issues and the C?alifornia? DFEH lawsuit.

Microsoft announced its intent to acquire Activision Blizzard earlier this week for $68.7 billion. Once the deal is finalized, Activision Blizzard employees will report up the chain to Xbox's Phil Spencer. Currently, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick is still at ?the head of the company.

We've reached out to both Activision Blizzard and Xbo??x for comment on the news.

An Activision Blizzard spokesperson told Bloomberg that the company is "carefully ??reviewing the request for voluntary recog?nition from the CWA."

Unionization efforts in the games industry have been steadily increasing. As the Raven work stoppage commenced, there were reports of union authorization cards getting handed out. Last month, Vodeo Games officially recognized its studio employee's unionization.

This could be another bi??g step in unionization efforts within the industry. And with al??l eyes on Activision Blizzard right now, whatever happens will certainly have some ripple effect throughout the broader space.

Team hopes to set precedent for the industry

Independent outfit Vodeo Games is now officially recognized as the first unionized video ??game studio in North America. The certified motion, achieved in association with the Communication Workers of America, recognizes each and every U.S. and Canadian employee who partakes in full-t??ime, part-time, remote, or contracted work with the company.

"All workers deserve a union and a say in how their workplace is run, no matter where they work, what their employment status is, or what kind of conditions they work under," said Vodeo Games producer Myriame Lachapelle. "W??e have been inspired by the growing worker organizing within the gaming industry and hope we can set a new precedent for industry-wide standards that will better our shared working conditions and inspire others to do the same."

Vodeo Games, which was founded earlier this year, operates an entirely remote working environment and has the modest aim of releasing one title per financial year. The studio's first release, Beast Breaker, launched on PC and Nintendo Switch back in December. Speaking with Polygon, studio employees spoke of their pleasure a??t becoming the industry's first recognized video game development union, along with the team's hopes that it will set a growing precedent among the gargantuan developers?? and publishers frequently under fire for toxic and unhealthy working conditions.

"We were really inspired by what a lot of our colleagues were doing in the game industry and the tech industry and beyond... Voltage Organized Workers, United Paizo Worker... there was a lot going on," said Vodeo employee and union member Carolyn Jong speaking with Polygon. "It felt like a natural next step for us to be talking about, 'Hey, ma?ybe we should be unionizing,' and help set a positive precedent for the digital games industry as?? well."

"We’re here to say, 'Hey, it can be done,'" continues Lachapelle. "It’s often said that the?? digital game industry is special that unions are good for other industries, like film, that it wouldn’t work for games, especially smaller indie teams. [...] But everyone deserves a union, like three, or 10, or 200, or thousands of people."

Lachapelle is right, of course. And while Vodeo Games might have found it a little easier than most to form the union due to its small team and open and accepting management it's vitally important that all studios and publishers within the industry take steps to both protect and respect the h??ealthcare, rights, and integrity of their respective employees, implementing real, docum??ented, and legally-binding change to ensure that we no longer have to hear horrifying testimony of crunch, workplace abuse, discrimination, and unfair pay grades.

More certified unions and fewer 'Workplace Responsibility Committees, if you please.

More efforts are underway for change at Activision Blizzard

The ABK Workers Alliance, an organization of workers across Activision Blizzard, has opened a strike fund. This arrives alongside the initiation of its own work stoppage, callin?g for its demands to be met and worker representation within the company.

The GoFundMe page lays out a timeline of allegations and reports on incidents?? within the company.

"In the months since, we've seen CEO Bobby Kotick and the Board of Directors protect abusers and only hold perpetrators accountable after the events were brought to light by outside media," reads their statement. "We've seen Activision hire law firm WilmerHale, known for union busting, to disrupt and impede the improvement efforts of Activision-Blizzard workers. We've seen Raven Software workers lured by the promise of pro??motion, only to be termin??ated shortly after relocation on top of the already underappreciated and severely underpaid working conditions of ABK workers across the company."

These events and others, the organizers say, have led an alliance of Activision Blizzard workers to hold a work stoppage until demands are met. The strike fund will, to that extent, contribute to offsetting wages lost from the work stoppage. They'll also go towards the potential relocation of Raven Software employees who were "forced to move without financial assistance at the insistence of Activision Blizzard," as reported at outlets like Uppercut.

The Washington Post also reports that employees, working w??ith the Communication Workers of America, are as??king workers to sign union authorization cards.

Employees from Raven Software and other branches had already formed a walkout ??in protest of sudden layoffs earlier this week. In emails seen by The Washington Post, management told ?workers that their wages would be paid for Monday through Wednesday, but not any further. Any who continue to strike will be unpaid or dipping into their paid time off.

We'v??e reached ou??t to Activision Blizzard for comment.

This is another point in the timeline of ongoing tensions at Activision Blizzard. Since the announcement of the ??California Department of Fair Employment and Housing's suit against the publisher over allegations of discrimination, ha?rassment, and a toxic culture, more stories have come out and e?mployees have held escalating demonstrations, calling for their demands to be met. All this, on the same day as The Game Awards 2021, could be what kickstarts a larger shift in the industry.
