Unless you're a developer, it feels like quite a long time ago that Unity decided to metaphorically castrate itself with a new business idea. Pissing literally everyone off, the tech firm made plans to introduce a Runtime Fee for studios using its engine.

The new tariff would effectively see developers having to pay every time someone downloaded a game that was built in Unity. As you can imagine, the backlash was strong. So strong, in fact, that the then-CEO, John Riccitiello, announced he was leaving Unity. Fast forward to today, and the new company director, Matt Bromberg, has announced that the Runtime Fee idea is being scrap??ped for good.

//twitter.com/unitygames/status/1834245947175428571

In a recent message to the community, Bromberg said that "after deep consultation," the controversial fee will be no more, "effective immediately." While this sounds like a positive move forward, it should be noted that t?here are a couple of provisos. Those who use the Pro or Enterprise versions of the s?oftware should heed the following.

Price increases inbound

Now?, on the plus side, those using Unity Personal will be able to continue to do so for free as before, except the revenue cap is being increased. The company will be doubling the amount studios can make o??n Unity games from $100,000 to $200,000 before they have to start paying.

However, if you use the paid services, things are about to get more expensive. The m?essage from Bromberg says that Unity wants to "deliver value at a fair price." With that in mind, Unity Pro and Unity Enterprise will see price increases, which will come into effect on January 1, 2025.

For ?Pro users, this will ?mean an 8% increase of subscription fees, which puts it at $2,200 a year per seat. For Enterprise, the price will increase by 25%, and any developers with annual revenues and funding of more than $25 million will be required to have a subscription to Enterprise.

On the one hand, scrapping the Runtime Fee entirely is a good move, even if it?? feels too little or too late. Looking at the comments under the post on X shows a mixed bag of opinions. It could be argued that canceling the fee is a means of softening the blow for the price increases that are inbound. Bromberg gives with one hand and seemingly takes with the other.

I'll let the Unity CEO close this one out:

Canceling the Runtime Fee for games and instituting these pricing changes will allow us to continue investing to improve game development ?for everyone while also being bette??r partners.

It's up to you to deci??de whether to believe him or not.

When first digging into V Rising, you’ll quickly get the opportunity to build a little vampiric stronghold all your own. One of the objects you can add to your castle right away are Growing Plots, though it might be a s??truggle to figure out how exa?ctly to plant any seeds in them.

How to find Seeds in V Rising

To plant anything in your castle in V Rising, of course you’ll need seeds. I got my first lot after chopping down some Blood Rose bushes as I terrorized the local townsfolk. Another way to get your claws on seeds is by breaking crates and barrels â€?a great location to do this is the Brighthaven Trade??rs Market in Silverlight Hills â€?scouring shelves in houses, and even happening upon them in chest??s.

There are also merchants who will give you coveted seeds in exchange for Silver Coins, and another method is to take down V Rising's various V Bloods and other tough foes you’ll encount???er in the game’s open world.

Planting the seeds

Okay, seeds obtained. Now the puzzle is how to actually get them into the ground. When interacting with most other items in V Rising, you just approach it until the button prompt appears. However, Growing Plots don’t give a button prompt, and dragging/dropping ??the seeds from the inventory onto ??that confounded pile of dirt just drops them on the ground.

To plant seeds in V Rising, add them to your hotbar. Then press the corresponding hotkey, and a glowy outline of the plant will appear. It's similar to other objects when you’re building. Move the plant to the des?ired location on the Growing Plot and confirm as usual.

Figuring out how to plant the seeds I’d collected ??took an embarrassingly long time, and its inconsistency with the other interaction mechanics in the game is still a? little baffling. But at least I got it done!

Although you can purchase seeds from different merchants available in the game, they don't all carry the same stock. So you'll want to make sure to hit up the correct trader if you have a particular craf??ting recipe in mind.

Gavyn the Shady Dealer, who patrols the southern half?? of Farbane Woods, sells seeds for 15 Silver Coins.

  • Blood Rose Seed
  • Fire Blossom Seed
  • Snow Flower Seed
  • Mourning Lily Seed
  • Hell's Clarion Spores

Berk the Traveling Trader, who patrols the roads of Dun??ley Farmlands, sells seeds for 45 Silver Coins.

  • Sunflower Seed

Ottar the Merchant, who lives in a hou?se on the south end of Brighthaven Slums, sells seeds for 200 Silver Coins.

  • Ghost Shroom Spores
  • Highland Lotus (removed from the game)

Getting seeds from plants

If you want to get seeds the old-fashioned, an?d less expensive, way, you’ll need to head to the zones where the different plants grow.

  • Blood Rose Seed - Dunley Farmlands, Farbane Woods, Silverlight Hills
  • Fire Blossom Seed - Farbane Woods
  • Snow Flower Seed - Dunley Farmlands, Farbane Woods, Silverlight Hills
  • Mourning Lily Seed - Dunley Farmlands, Farbane Woods
  • Hell's Clarion Spores - Dunley Farmlands, Farbane Woods
  • Sunflower Seed - Dunley Farmlands
  • Ghost Shroom Spores - Cursed Forest

Now you know where to find or buy the different seeds available in V Rising and, most importantly, how to plant them. The flora you'll grow as a result can be used to craft various potions and other magical items like yarn, cursed wood, and even Ghouls that can be animated after building a Tomb.

If you've played Daggerfall Unity, you'll know it's the best way to experience The Elder Scrolls 2 in the modern gaming climate. Now, with the full thing having recently launched, the creato??r of? the project is looking to make their own game.

In a recent interview with DualShockers, developer Gavin Clayton said he's now working on his own idea, which will be styled after Daggerfall. He has this to say about the project:

I do genuinely love that old style of game. The thing I’m building is in the same vein. You’re talking big world, complex systems, mod support, that’s all of the stuff I want to explore, and I want to take that experience of Daggerfall Unity and put it in the new game.

Essentially, Clayton wants to realize ????his dream of making a game from scratch, something he's dreamed of since he was a kid.

With some D&D influence in there, perhaps

While there are no details about what this game will actually be, he's been open to answering a few questions on Twitter/X.

For example, when asked whether he was going to be using Unity, Clayton said he's building his own engine, or, more accurately, he's "revived an engine I?? spent some years on."

As for any kind of lore or narrative,? the project is still in the early stages, but when asked, the response was that the "world and main story have their roots in a D&D 2ED campaign I created and ran for friends in the 90s."

Daggerfall Unity has been an enormous task for anyone to complete, especially as it was a full remake using a different engine. It's almost certainly reinvigorated interest in Bethesda's classic RPG, and I would personally recommend anyone interested in retro Elder Scrolls games to check it out.

Unity is starting the new year with a sizeable round of layoffs. According to Reuters, the company plans to ax 25% of its workfor??ce, about 1,800 emp??loyees.

The layoffs are expected to be completed by March 2024 and it will affect all teams and areas of the business. The internal company memo states that this is being ?done as Unity "restructures and refocuses on its core business, and to position itself for long-term and profitable growth."

At present, the company cannot determine what the related costs and charges will be though "charges will primarily relate to employee transition, severance payments, and employee benefits." There has also been no word on what structural changes, though a company spokesperso??n confirmed that they are coming, R??euters reports.

These layoffs come after Unity faced great controversy in 2023 following the announcement of "runtime fees" for developers. Plans for these additional fees have continued, and CEO James Whitehurst states it is expected that the impact of this business mo?del change will have "minimal benefit in 2024 and ramp from there as customers adopt our new releases."

Last year, the gaming industry witnessed waves of layoffs striking several companies. It appears the trend is far from over, with Unity's massive layoffs bringing a bad start to the year. VR studio Archiact has also already announced layoffs in 2024.

Long-time players of The Elder Scrolls series will need no introduction to Daggerfall, the second entry in Bethesda's fantasy franchise. However, if you have never played?? this absolute classic albeit wholly retro-looking RPG, now's the perfect time.

You see, the Daggerfall Unity project has finally released version 1.0 of this unofficial remake (thanks, PCGamesN), which you can download from GitHub. Intended as a more stable release of previous builds, this update represents the ne?xt stage of a recreation that's been ongoing for a few years.

Yes, some of you may scoff a?t the fact that this was made in the Unity engine. But you may take some comfort in knowing that it wa?s made long before the debacle that saw the company's reputation take a nosedive.

Again, free to download

While The Elder Scrolls 2 is free to play through Steam, many would recommend the Unity version instead. It's a complete remake of the original 1996 release, done from the group up, but it doesn't lose its classic aesthetic and gameplay. It's simply been? rebuilt in a different engine.

The visuals have been given a spit shine, but it still looks like a 90s DOS game. Add onto that Daggerfall Unity supporting mods, of which there are plenty to choose from, and it should make for a good time.

While Skyrim is the one most people think of when it comes to TES, older gamers such as myself fondly ??recall some of the more dated in??stallments.

True, going back to their original iterations can be hard work on modern systems, but the Unity remake of Daggerfall is easily the definitive way to check out this legendary RPG. Especially now the full release is out. If you're at least interested, check out this rundown on changes and improvements in more detail.

Oh, it's been a trying time for developers, especially those who've been hurt by Unity's recent new controversial fees. As a resu?lt, many have been hightailing it outta there, looking for alternatives. In the midst of all this, one company has decided to engage in some savvy business acumen.

GameMaker has decided to go in the opposite direction and make itself free. A recent post on the company's website is celebrating Thanksgiving by offering a free-to-use license for non-commercial?? purposes. On top of this, there's also a new "one-time fee"?? for a commercial license, replacing its Creator/Indie subscriptions, while Enterprise remains the same.

//twitter.com/GameMakerEngine/status/1726949064196128776

While it can't be assumed that this is in direct response to Unity??'s "Runtime Fee," Gam?eMaker head Russell Kay says the team has seen "other platforms making awkward moves with their pricing and terms," so saw fit to go in the other direction. Mum's the word, Kay. Mum's the word.

If you haven't heard of it, you soon will

Offering support for ?all kinds of platforms, including Android, iOS, Amazon TV, Raspberry Pi, as well as Windows and modern consoles, GameMaker is one more alternative for developers to use.

If you've ever played Hotline Miami or Undertale (or both), then you've played a GameMa??ker title before. And with free usage for non-commercial endeavors being offered, there's probably going to be a few more people eager to jump ship.

As for what's going on with Unity at the moment, alongside the carnage it's created, the company may also be laying off staff.? You?? know, that thing that's been a plague on the industry this year and is almost certainly going to make people dislike Unity even more? Yeah, that thing.

This year has seen a slew of studios and gaming companies face significant layoffs, and it doesn't seem like things are set to slow down soon. It appears Unity may be the next to suffer layoffs as it attempts to become? a "leaner, more agile??, and faster growing company."

In a shareholder letter, Unity CEO James Whitehurst claims that the company has a big opportunity to grow in the future, ?though that may be difficult at present because the team is trying to do too much at once. As Whitehurst explains, "we are not achievi?ng the synergies that exist across our portfolio, and we are not executing to our full potential."

Third-quarter financial results are described as "mixed." The strategy to make the company leaner will include increasing focus on its main p?rojects such as the Unity Editor. Though nothing is set in stone yet, the plan will likely involve discontinuing certain products, reducing the business's office footprint, and reducing the size of the workforce.

The letter also addressed the controversy surrounding the announcement of runtime fees. Whitehurst acknowledges that "the execution created friction with our customers and near-term headwinds." Despite this, there's no indication of any intentions to back down. The event is described as "now mostly behind us," though it is expected that because of the controversy, the new business model will be minimally beneficial in 2024 until customers adopt Unity's ??new release??s.

No date is given regarding when these interventions will b?e implemented but further guidance will come ??with the fourth quarter and full year 2023 results.

Ah, Unity. Truly a textbook case of how some companies are so far removed from reality, that they make Elon Musk look relatable. The fiasco surrounding the borderline offensive Runtime Fee not only pissed off developers, but apparently even s?taff members didn't approve of it.

According to a report from Mobilegamer.biz (via Eurogamer), sources at Unity itself say that there was "resistance to the Runtime Fee ??idea," but concerns were said to have been ignored. It goes on ?to say that some people at the company weren't even aware of the new pricing system.

//twitter.com/unity/status/1705270545002983657

On top of that, insiders also claim that the controversial policy was "rushed out" and was "driven by Unity and IronSource’s intense battle with Applovin over the mediation business." It's even been claimed that one mobile game publisher told former CEO John Riccitiello, "F**k you, we’re not paying??."

Unity has been rather quiet lately

For those who aren't aware, it was revealed not long ago that Unity would be introducing a new pricing structure. In a nutshell: it would ??require developers who use the c??ompany's engine to create games would need to pay a fee per user installation.

As you c??an imagine, the backlash was quite severe. Many indie developers took immense exception to having to pay money every time someone installed their game. At the original point of the policy being announced, there was no indication of how Unity would ha?ndle illegal downloads and installations. At the time, the fee would make studios pay for both new installs and re-installs.

Since then, the Runtime Fee has been dialed back a bit, but is still going ahead. Riccitiello has also left Unity, so the future is uncertain about what will happen going forward. Many developers have since jumped ship to alternative engines??, but the insider knowledge suggests that even people working at Unity were not happy with the upcoming fees.

Unity has not been in a lot of indie developer's good books lately. The controversial new fee caused many to turn their back on the devel?opment toolkit and its creator. Following on from this, Unity CEO John Riccitiello has now decided to leave the company.

Unity has announced the departure of Riccitiello as President, Chief Executive Officer, Chairman, and a member of the Company’s Board of Directors??, "effective immediately." The business executive has been with the company since 2014, having come from Electronic Arts.

As it stands, Unity will be without a permanent CEO for the time being. However, James M. Whitehurst who has served as Senior Advisor at IBM will ass??ume the role of Interim Chief Executive Officer??. Additionally, the company's Lead Independent Director of the board, Roelof Botha, has been appointed Chairman.

Unreal that he didn't go sooner

Many who've been follo??wing the story surrounding Unity's proposed "Runtime Fee" will be able to put the pieces together. While there doesn't appear to be any official statement as to why Riccitiello has resigned, it's too much of a coincidence for the recent debacle to not be a major factor in the decision.

Some will be pleased that the former COO of Electronic Arts is now out of the picture, though the controversy is still around, it seems. As far as we can tell, Unity intends to go ahead with a version of its contentious new pricing plan. The company did backtrack a little bit on the policy, but some may feel it's too little too late.

As such, a lot of people–especially independent developers and studiosa href="//twitter.c??om/Ag?groCrabGames/status/1711483208226021775" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">probably won't be sad to see Riccitiello leave. However, we don't know who?? will take ??over on a more permanent basis, nor whether this will affect the controversial fee that caused a stir among the gaming community.

Developers received a nasty surprise when Unity announced that those who use its game engine will be subject to a run??time fee, beginning next year. This runtime fee will be charged monthly on a per-installation basis.

Predictably, this led to a wave of complaints among developers, many of them small indie creators, pointing out how this change could affect their abili?ty to profitably make games. Many also feel deceived, as the new system goes against Unity's previous terms of service.

//twitter.com/Terraria_Logic/status/1704227519027651016

In a show of unity (pun unintended), developers have been helping each other overcome this new obsta?cle. Terraria developer Re-Logic has played its part by pledging to donate $100,000 to the open-source engines Godot and FNA. Additionally, the studio will be donating $1,000 a month?? each.

Unity apologizes for runtime fee policy

Re-Logic takes a stand

The act of camaraderie is commendable, but it becomes even more impressive when you learn that Terraria does not use Unity outside of a few elements on mobile and consoles. Re-Logic claims this was done because a simple Tweet wouldn't suffice in this situation which affects so much ?of the gaming industry.

The studio hasn't held back with its criticism of Unity's new policy, claiming that the saddest part of the ordeal is the "flippant manner with whi?ch years of trust cultivated by Unity were cast aside for yet another way to squeeze publishers, studios, and gamers." Re-Logic hasn't asked for anything in exchange for its donations except for the engines to remain powerful and approachable for developers.

Unity has suffered a severe backlash, and in response, it has backtracked some points, and there are reports that a cap will be placed on the runtime fee. It may be a little too late, as some studios have already begun boycotts and disabling ads, including mobile developer Azur Games.

Ever since Unity first announced its plans for a new runtime install fee, it's been trying to put flex tape over it with clarifications ?and responses. Now, it looks like there may be some backpedaling on the horizon. To some extent, at least.

According to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, Unity may opt to cap its upcoming and highly unpopular new fees at 4%.

//twitter.com/unity/status/1703547752205218265

The report goes on to sa??y that this would be for studios/games that are making over $1 million, and that installs won't be retroactively counted. On top of this, installs will be calculated based on a "a developer's self-reported data rather than Unity's own nebulous estimate methodology."

What's the big deal?

A week ago, Unity performed an almost impressive display of self-immolation by introducing Runtime Fees as part of its new pricing plan. The policy goes into effect on Januar?y 1, 2024, and will mean that studios that have built games through Unity will have to pay a monthly fee for every new install.

This caused an immediate outcry from the community, with developers swearing off the company and its produc??ts. While Unity ??did try to clarify that this fee wouldn't affect the vast majority of game companies, the announcement was met with an enormous amount of derision and backlash.

There have been previous attempts to undo some of the damage. Recently, Unity issued an apology and said it would look into "making changes to the policy." Wh??ile there's been no official word yet, Schreier's report gives some indication that the company may now have f??inally grasped the enormity of its own public flogging.

Everyone and their mum already know just how badly the team behind the Unity game engine has misread the proverbial room. Following the initial bout of critique directed at Unity, as well as a round of death threats, the company has tried to mitigate the ongoing PR disaster in a variety of ways, but indie devs aren't having any of it. Tom Francis, in particular, the person responsible for Gunpoint, Heat Signature, and the upcoming Tactical Breach Wizards, has also decided to chime in on the problem.

A former gaming industry writer himself, Francis has decided not to mince any words in his recent blog post: "I just wanna spell out exactly what my issue is," he said. Five years into the production of Tactical Breach Wizards, his first Unity project, Francis and his team have had to invest both time and money into learning the engine. The de?cision to work with Unity, said Francis, was based on the understanding that it wouldn't take ?any share of the game's post-release income. An understanding that is, as it turns out, no longer valid.

Image via Tom Francis

Is the damage to Unity's brand now irreparable?

The gist of Francis' argument rests on Unity's own (out-of-date) Terms of Service: "When you obtain a ve?rsion of Unity??, and don't upgrade your project, we think you should be able to stick to that version of the TOS."

??Indeed, Francis' team uses Unity 2019.3: "In the last 4 years, the only additional value? Unity have provided us is bug fixes to that version. But that’s OK! I’m happy to pay a large fee up front to avoid having our income skimmed forever," Francis wrote. "It wasn’t on my radar that the most reputable indie engine might be silently laying the groundwork for a moustache-twirling betrayal."

As access to Unity is a subscription, rather tha??n a single-purchase product, Francis himself admits that he's bound to have accepted an updated TOS ??with the previously outlined addendum removed from the mix. Dropping Unity isn't an option: "By this point," said Francis, "we’re trapped in [Unity's] platform to the tune of 5 yearswork."

"This is why? I am not remotely mollified by reassurances that the current profit-skimming terms won’t sting me in particular too badly. That’s not the f*ckinheadline! The headline is that you (surprisingly) can and (staggeringly) will change how much of our revenue you wish to take at any time after we’ve already committed," explained Francis.

"My thing is, if you offer me Unity 2019 at $150 a month, it’s a scumbag move to wait til I’m too far invested to switch, then change it to a per-install deal even if I keep using the old version," Francis concluded. As per Unity's latest statement to Axios, there are several caveats to the engine's intended monetization scheme, but it's not hard to see that the Unity brand may have been permanently marred for years to come. Francis, from the looks of it, doesn't intend to leverage Unity after Tactical Breach Wizards launches, and it's likely that he's not ??alone in this line of thinking.

In a Twitter post on September 17, Unity Technologies apologized and claimed that changes are coming to their recently announced—and heavily disliked—runtime fee policy. The new policy was met with pretty universal outcry as developers realized they'd suddenly be on the hook for ludicrous fees. In some unique instances, some developers would owe more in fees under the new policy than they may have earned??? in total via sales for their game.

"We have heard yo?u. We apologize for the confusion and angst the runtime fee policy we announced on Tuesday caused. We are listening, talking to our team members, community, customers, and partners, and will be making changes to the policy. We will share an update in a couple of days. Thank you for your honest and critical feedback."

Unity via Twitter

Too little, too late?

It's no surprise that Unity is walking back the runtime fee policy already. Not only have customers been unhappy across the board, but some have already sworn off using Unity in the future. This seems like one of those cases where being a bit out of touch with your user base may have led to some pretty disastrous decisions. In fact, a lot of developers have stated they aren't against paying more to use Unity if their game ends up being a hit. However, the way they plan to implement it in its current state simp??ly makes no sense.

Most of the comments on the Twitter post are from users declaring Unity has already lost their trust. No one wants to risk building a new game in Unity only for a retroactive fee structure activating later. It's an odd situation because obviously learning a new engine isn't always ideal either. But, if that's your only two op??tions, it's easy to see the path most developers would take.

Hopefully, in a couple of days, we'll have more information ?regarding the changes as Unity has promised. Based on the current sentiment it feels like this may be too little, too late. But, only time will tell.

Unity has closed two of its offices and canceled a town hall after receiving a death threat, as reported by Bloomberg. This comes days after a controversial announcement that the co??mpany would require pay??ment for every first-time game installation made using the engine.

A spokesperson for the company told Bloomberg that Unity has "taken immediate and proactive measures" to ensure employee safety. Th??e offices will remain closed for Thursday and Friday at minimum, as the company works with law enforcement.

The changes were an unpleasant shock to developers, as messaging regarding fees was often unclear and in flux. A Unity representative later clarified what kind of download would require a fee, but the damage had been done. Smaller developers fear what this measure could have initially meant, and the company's attempts at clarification don't seem to have quelled fears.

The ??Austin and San Francisco offices were closed?, per Bloomberg's report.

Unity is already facing trouble due to what many?? see as a short-si??ghted decision, but that doesn't warrant threatening employees. It's unknown how long this investigation will last or if the offices will potentially remain closed into next week.

All this debacle surrounding Unity's upcoming Runtime Fee has caused a major stir, especially among developers. This includes none other than Facepunch Studios, best known for Garry's Mod and the brutal survival game Rust.

In a statement on Garry Newman's (not that one) blog, the founder of Facepunch has outright said that Unity can now "get f*cked." This alone pretty much spel??ls out how most people feel about what's going on with the popular game engine at the moment.

//twitter.com/garrynewman/status/1701950180658983294

Newman expands on this by saying that there's trust has now been broken between Unity and pretty much every developer that uses its toolkit. The post then concludes by saying: "Rust 2 definitely won't be a Unity game"

Does this mean a follow-up is in development?

It's difficult to not take this as an off-the-cuff way of confirming that Rust 2 is in the pipeline. It could well? have just been Newman letting off some steam by saying that any future proje??cts will not be utilizing Unity products.

As such, we can't say for definite whether a Rust follow-up is in development. It could well be that Facepunch Studios is looking to do a sequel of its popular PvP/?PvE/PvLE (Player? vs. Literally Everything - that one's mine) title. We'll have to just keep an eye on whether this gets elaborated on in the future.

The general takeaway ?from Newman's post is that nobody is happy with the dire??ction Unity is currently heading in. Seemingly, the reasons are obvious to everyone but Unity itself.

Soda Drinker Pro is an odd one. Created by Will Brierly a hog's age ago, it eventually made its way to Steam and Xbox One. I was turned onto it back in the day by the relentless enthusiasm of Destructoid grizzled veteran Jonathan "Grizzled Veteran" Holmes. With Unity making an impressive attempt to implode a massive sect??ion of the indie development community, Will Brierly has decided it's time to stick the needle in and get sucking as much cash out of enthusiastic soda drinkers as possible.

Via the Soda Drinker Pro website, Will Brierly has announced that beginn??ing January 1, 2024, a diabolical new monetization scheme will be implemented.

Historically, Soda Drinker Pro functioned on a one-time purchase model. However, after an exhaustive analysis of our revenue streams and the gam?e's mechanics, which merely simulate the act of sipping a digital beverage, we have determined that a per-sip fee optimally aligns with our business objectives. Each sip activates a specific segment of our proprietary code, thereby justifying the incremen??tal charge.

You can view the full details of just how out-of-pocket you will be here on the Soda Drinker Pro webzone.

Just kidding

The whole Unity price structure is a big upsetting situation. Considering all the indie devs I follow on Twitter, my entire feed has been taken up by the outcry against it. And for good reason. It's the sort of greed I expected when John Riccitiello took the position of CEO in 2014. I'm mostly s??urprised it took them this long to switch into host-murdering parasite mode.

//youtu.be/zw5cmzh_eS4?feature=shared

The upside to this is that, by wading into the conversation, Will Brierly has notified me that Soda Drinker Pro is coming to the NES. The trailer w?ent live August 25, and I somehow missed it. The shame I feel right now should really spice up my self-flagellation routine ??later tonight.

More information is coming soon, but Brierly has stated that Snowrunner and Limited Run Games assisted with the production. I'm assuming that means it will be distributed by Limited Run Games, but we'll have to wait and see. We'll also have to be patient to find out if secret game Vivian Clark will also be getting an 8-bit upgrade.

Soda Drinker Pro is currently available on PC and Xbox One.

[Update: Unity's board of directors has unanimously voted to reject AppLovin's $17.5 billion merger proposal. Calling the deal "not in the best interests of Unity shareholders," Unity is now expected to continue with its previous plans to merge with mobile software firm IronSource. As noted in the ori?ginal article below, backing out of the IronSource deal was a key condition of the AppLovin proposal.

"We remain committed to and enthusiastic about Unity’s agreement with IronSource and the substantial benefits it will create for our shareholders and Unity creators," said Unity CEO John Riccitiello of the decision. "The board continues to believe that the IronSource transaction is compelling and will deliver an opportunity to generate long-term value." Reuters]

Original Article /strong>

Mobile software company AppLovin has issued a proposal to Unity Technologies, offering to merge with the popular and highly widespread game engine creator for a staggering $17.5 billion USD buy-in rate. App??Lovin made the offer public yesterday, with Unity Technology currently weighing up its options.

In order for Unity to accept the deal, it must first back out of its current agreement with another mobile-heavy software company, IronSource. IronSource and Unity announced their plans to merge a mere month ago, in a deal that would see IronSource become a subsidiary of Unity Technologies. AppLovin has requested the abolition of these plans as a key qualifier for its own merger proposal??.

"Over the last decade, we have built and operate??d a leading and innovative company in mobile app marketing and monetization solutions," writes AppLovin CEO Adam Foroughi. "Unity is one of the world's leading platforms for helping creators turn their inspirations into real-time 3D content. With the scale that comes from unifying our leading solutions and innovation that would be achieved with the combination of our teams, we expect that game developers would be the biggest beneficiaries as they continue to lead the mobile gaming sector to its next chapter of growth."

Should the merger go ahead, Unity CEO John Riccitiello recently embroiled in the "fucking idiots" monetization controversy would become joint CEO of the new company. In regard to new company stock, Unity shareholders would receive 55% of company shares, with 49% of voting rights shares. AppLovin believes that the merger will result in somewhere in the region of $50??0-700 million a year in the new company's pre-tax revenue.

The biggest withdrawals yet

The Game Developers Conference is going to be missing a lot of the biggest game developers. In a little more than two weeks, GDC will kick off in San Francisco without attendance from PlayStation, Oculus, Facebook, Electronic Arts, PUB??G Corp or Kojima Productions. They all canceled their plans in response to the ongoing concerns over coronavirus and its potential to become a global epidemic.

Now, three more heavy hitters are out. Microsoft, Epic Games, and Unity have announced that they're also skipping GDC 2020. Epic tweeted confirmation that it's pulling out by saying "Regrettably, uncertainty around health concerns has made it unviable to ??send our employees, and so we have m??ade the difficult decision to withdraw attendance." Epic is always one of the biggest names at GDC considering how many developers work with the Unreal Engine.

It's a similar story for Unity. Another one of the most popular game engines, Unity has also pulled out of GDC while citing concern for its employees. "While we did not make this decision lightly, the current conditions with COVID-19 (also known as Novel Coronavirus) present too much risk," Unity says. "We take our employees'&nb??sp;?wellbeing very seriously. We do not want any Unity employee or partner to compromise their health and safety unnecessarily."

Microsoft's withdrawal is more nuanced. According to Microsoft's official Game Stack blog, it seems as though all Microsoft and Xbox-related sessi??ons will be moved to a digital-only format that is available to be streamed. Microsoft won't have any phys??ical presence at GDC, though.

This trio of cancellations may be the biggest yet for the people who actually at?tend GDC. While their presentations and talks would surely impart valuable knowledge, it's the show floor where their absence will be most noticeable. GDC's show floor largely functions as a job fair -- a recruitment event where people can get facetime with companies they're interested in working for??. Now, it's without three of gaming's tech giants. GDC is going to be a shell of its former self, at least for one year.

Bob-omb Battlefield's never looked better

Unity developer Erik Roystan Ross took one of the most iconic and beloved levels in videogames and gave it a makeover. Ross recreated Bob-omb Battlefield, the first stage in 1996's Super Mario 64, in HD from scr??atch. Even better, it was playable for free from your browser.

Unf??ortunately, the key word here is "was." Today, Nintendo slapped Ross with a cease and desist, mandating that he take the build down. All that exists now is Ross' video that shows off his gorgeous Unity-born cr?eation.

For wha??t it's worth, Ross' take on Bob-omb Battlefield, as impressive as it was, isn't identical to the original. Tweaks were made to the level, likely out of simplicity's sake. Obv??ious pieces are missing such as the chained Chomp, the giant Bob-omb on top of the hill, and all cannon functionality. Still, it was a fantastic effort.

However, that effort certainly wasn't appreciated by Nintendo, a company that's always been ardent in protecting its properties. In a statement, Nintendo said "Nintendo respects the intellectual property rights of others, and in turn expects others to respect ours. Nintendo is passionate about protecting its creative works developed to entertain its fans and takes the necessary steps to remove unauthorized content distributed via ??the Internet."

That's a good thing!

The latest version of Unity will now support the PlayStation Vita. Now developers licensed with Sony can use the engine to create Vita games, making use of the handheld's features from the cameras, rear touch pad, motion sensors, and dual analog sticks. Unity will also be integrated w?ith PSN features such as Trophies, and friends.

One such game that used the Unity engine that was already released for Sony platforms was Stick It To The Man!, a game that fell under a lot of people's noses.

Really, to best sum up this news I'm going to quote Dtoid reader EphemeralSynthesis when Unity first announced support for all Sony gaming devices:

"This means we're gonna see som??e great games AND completely terrible games!"

Indeed.

eShop presentation at Full Indie Summit highlighted commitment to the little guys

For all of Nintendo's shortcomings in dealing with major publishers, the Kyoto giant has been making great strides in courting independent developers. Just this past Saturday at the Full Indie Summit in Vancouver, Nintendo of America's manager of business development, Dan Adelman, took to the stage to explain how easy it is to get software up on Wii U's eShop. Though no official transcript of the talk exists, Nintendo Life's Jon Wahlgren was on site to tweet the best bits.

We've all heard the horror stories from the WiiWare days, such as requiring a proper office or receiving payment only after a minimum sales threshold is met. Those archaic policies are long gone, as you might already be aware, but that's only the beginning. On the eShop, there is neither a concept approval process nor a mandate to use motion controls or GamePad features. Nintendo doesn't even require platform exclusivity, calling such methods "childish" ??-- no doubt a jab?? at Microsoft's XBLA arrangements.

Alderman urges indies interested in developing on the Wii U to visit a special Wii U developers page, where prospective partners can fill out a small questionnaire and be one step closer to a license. Nintendo will even provide the Unity Pro 4 engine at no additional cost, a??nd of course there's the Nintendo Web Framework that supports HTML5 and JavaScript.

The eShop environment is meant to be as painless for devs as possible, offering a robust array of options with no hidden fees. Pretty much the only thing needed to become licensed is business entity status, which costs less than $200 in the US.

While? Internet pundits worry that Nintendo is failing to form healthy third-party relations, it sounds like the company is taking a different approach. I personally think this is a great idea, as it avoids the blood waters of home console development in order to foster the content creators of tomorrow. Could that have been Nintendo's plan all along? Makes you wonder.

Gonna go back in time!

Got a couple of minutes to spare? What am I say??ing? Of course you do! Check this? shizz out!

NeoGAF user asa spent a few days messing around in Unity in order to make a nifty interactive NES music box. By pressing the power button, you can listen to the theme song of the game currently inserted in the machine. If you want to listen to something else, simply eject the cartridge and pop in a d?ifferent one. And when you get tired of NES jams, you can even flip the channels on the TV to see what's on!

It's actually really tough to handle the cartridges, but if you can get past the janki??ness, you'll enjoy this nice return to Saturday morning circa 1993. If only asa had programmed a way to blow on the contacts for that? authentic old-school experience.

From the minds and hands that worked on the Overlord series comes Cargo Commander, "...an arcade platform game in space, that mixes a Bruce Springsteen song with Alien," as described&??nbsp;by the developers. This trailer shows off some of the intense crate-cradling challenges that the Cargo Commander will have to face.

The game centers around your average work-a-day space salvager lo??oking to stay alive long enough to collect his credits and head back home. What first drew my attention to it was the stylized cartoon look of the characters and environments, along with the colorful palett?e and atmospheric lighting.

Combine that with fast-paced, move-or-die platforming and you have a recipe for generating a lot of tension for the player. So far, Serious Brew hasn't announced a release date, but Cargo Commander will be available for both PCs and Macs?.

Let's face it, Star Trek games have been a chal??lenge for most developers. With many titles in the past that have tried endlessly to capture the universe in a way that can please the fans of the series, the team at Keen Games is attempting to present a new take on the series and the genre of space simulation and actionish games.

Since this title is stepping into the free-to-play realm, they are making it more accessible to a younger and broad aud?ience.

Star Trek: Infinite Space (PC)
Developer: Keen Games
Publisher: Gameforge
Released: 2011
Price: Free

Hearing about a free-to-play Star Trek game might just catch some of you off guard. We also know that Star Trek fans also can be some of the most hardcore fans in the world. That being said, those expectations are high and we always need a good Star Trek title.

This is set up in the timeline of the Deep Space Nine world, where your job is to defend the Alpha Quadrant against all of the unknown denizens that tend to live in the universe. The story is written by Lee Sheldon who has written a few of the Next Generation episodes; Michael and Denise Okuda (authors of The Star Trek Encycl?opedia) also contributed to the detail of the game's story ??arc.

In terms of graphics, this game is incorporating a full 3D graphics en??gine called the Unity engine in the browser. You can see the detail in everything that you encounter in space from the architecture of the Ferengi hub to the nebula that you mig?ht have to mine ore out of.

There are two factions to choose from: Fede??ration and Klingon. When choosing which one, even thou?gh you might think that one is a good guy and one is not, do not be confused. This game is meant to be played the way you want to. If you want to pretend like you are a drunken Captain Kirk and have not a care for anyone else just to get your job done, you can do that. The option to actually be a kindhearted Klingon is also available should you choose to play that way.

Main story missions will ta??ke you through the campaign so that you can really immerse yourself in the surroundings of the world of Deep Space Nine. These missions are unique to each ?faction and can have multiple outcomes.

Battleground scenarios are there for you to try out different roles in groups or to fine tune your play-style??. You could keep trying different tactics to defeat that annoying Borg cube that has been giving you problems.

Exploration missions, which are a crucial part of the Star Trek world, are also there for you to finally get out and?? see what lies beyond the frontier.

The Central Hub in this game will be your launching point for you to meet up with friends and for you to build a party that will be able to go out and rule the galaxy. In the hub, you can show off your illustrious gear that you paid cash for or you can just go emot??e crazy and keep tapping your communicator to see who gets the most annoyed first. Yes, there is also and emote for you to "engage" as well.

Since you are the captain of the ship, you also have to successfully manage your crew. You will have to work with your Science officer, Security officer, Medical team, and your engineer. As you play this game, you will utilize them to? successfully manage your missions and they'll help you succeed. As you level up, you can use some of your skill points to help build your crew to make challenges with them easier to win.

Infinite Space plays lik?e a top-down action game. You have your skill bar at the bottom of the screen so your photon torpedoes are at the ready. From the overhead perspective, you'll control your ship and easily navigate it through levels. It works very similar to an RTS style of control for your ship where you can either drag it with a mouse, point and click, or use the WASD keys. For this game still being in development, the visuals are shaping up to be great.

In this demo, a Intrepid Class ship was used to complete the mission. As for the HUD, they really nailed it with the interface of how it would look if we were actually using a control panel. We took the starship around an asteroid fie?ld and int??o enemy territory, where we were promptly ambushed. After spamming photon torpedoes and phasers, we managed to get out safely and continue on to our destination.

In combat, the key is to weaken enemy shields; sending a disruptor their way to slow them down will be a great help while you take the time to flank them, f??or instance.

Morali??ty also plays a key role in this game where you will be faced with decisions that can influence your future. In one example, you are given a choice to blow up a ship with your away team on it or wait for them to try to ca??pture the rogue who might escape without your interference.

Star Trek: Infinite Space also promises over 180 hours of playtime. They really want to give players the tools to play how they want. So if you want to gang up o?n that pesky Borg Cube with three Defiant class ships, go right ahead. There will be twelve ships for each?? side of the game, but within that, there will be many variations of the ships to work with.

With this title stepping into the free-to-play realm, it is surprising to see all the work that they put into the detail of the game and the detail of the universe to get it just right for fans. Infinite Space will be out later this third quarter and it looks like it just might be the chance for us to boldly go there...for?? free.

Bullseye, the little showcase shooting range game by Interstellar Marines devs Zero Point Software, is now available on Kongregate as a lite version. The main difference between this version and the one on the official site is that the Kongregate version gives you a 3 second still ad for Interstellar Marines and the full free version of Bullseye, there are only 7 challenge stages,? and you don't have to log in to play it.

As part of the Kongregate Unity Contest, it's one of the more graphically impressiv?e games and deeper than you'd expect a shooting range game to be. Which makes sense, given that ZPS worked on it for quite a while now. I'd say give it a shot and check out the other contenders while you're at it. Unity doesn't instantly make games great, but there are some great ones that are worth a look.

On that note, watch this space for more about Interstellar Marines in the very near future.
