Greatness has awaited many players who have played the best PlayStation games over the past 30 years. While there have been some unfortunate moments like the release of Concord or the Wonderbook, Pla??yStation has released many top-quality games in its lifespan.

//youtu.be/0aspNlpszGE

Ape Escape

The first Ape Escape was revolutionary at the time as it utilized dual analog sticks in a ??revolutionary manner. In this game, you're catching monkeys with a net, and you're like a younger James Bo?nd with all sorts of gadgets at your disposal. Spinning the right analog stick, you can net monkeys, spin a hula-hoop to gain speed, and use radar. The level design still holds up today.

Spyro: Year of the Dragon

The final Insomniac Games-developed Spyro, Year of the Dragon, is a masterclass of 3D platforming design. Gliding through the air as the tiny purple dragon is thrilling, and the level design still holds up to this day. Some cool missions had you play as different characters, each with their own abilities to offer. Year of the Dragon mixes the gameplay formula enough?? to keep it fresh throughout its storyline. Shoutout to the fun skateboarding levels by the way! I loved those as a kid.

//youtu.be/o6NPhKJcs9w

Crash Bandicoot

This one might be the hardest of the trilogy, but it stands out the most. It has memorable levels and bosses that stick in my mind to this day. I played this with the N'Sane Trilogy for the first time (I was more of a Spyro kid) and loved the hard platforming and whacky art design that truly stands out among Crash's contemporaries like Mario and Sonic. This game also ch?anged up the platforming genre with its out-of-the-box hallway design that had Crash facing the camera during pivotal moments.

Wipeout

One of the best PlayStation games has us flying through a race course in futuristic vehicles. It's basically PlayStation's answer to the Mario Kart series. The racing's intense, there are weapons at your disposal, and the controls feel fluid. I remember crashing my vehicle into the walls, but if you really master the movement, Wipeout's a thrill.

Ico is an incredible PS2 game
Image via PlayStation

Ico

Ico is a special PS2 game that was way ahead of its time. It tells a riveting narrative with barely any speech as the environmental storytelling is spot on. The puzzles are well-designed, and the animations are great for this era. While escort missions are usually a huge turn-off in the gaming industry, Ico manages to make this mechanic thoroughly engaging and dramatic. "Puzzle-platforming, dragging a girl around and wimpy stick combat together sounds tedious, but it works really well, and we have Team Ico’s beautifully paced and designed levels to thank for that," said our review of the PS3 remaster.

Shadow of the Colossus is one of the best PlayStation games
Image via PlayStation

Shadow of the Colossus

The same developer, Team ICO, also made Shadow of the Colossus, a magnum?? opus,? which has received a PS4 remake since its PS2 launch. That's arguably the best way to play it. Shadow of the Colossus h?as you take on a bunch of bosses that act as brilliant platforming challenges in and of themselves. You're exploring a dark, empty landscape that's cursed and has been subject to time. You're defeating these bosses to save your character's love, and once again, without a word spoken, there's drama and eerieness in your protagonist's adventure. This is a masterpiece that must be played due to its story, incredible art, and sensational soundtrack to match with its groundbreaking gameplay.

Sly Cooper & The Thievius Raccoonus

This is a recent game I've been able to play, thanks to PlayStation Plus, and I wish I played it sooner. As a sneaky thief, you're stealthily platforming through imaginative levels. Developed by Sucker Punch, this game has aged well with its cel-shaded art style and engaging animation. While the bosses do seem a bit half-baked at times, each level is packed with entertaining challenges and enemy designs. I hope to play the next two in the trilogy with PlayStation Plus Premium, bu?t Sony's sure taking its time t??o release them as of the time of writing.

Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy is one of the best PlayStation platformers
Image via PlayStation

Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy

The original Jak & Daxter is one of the best 3D platformers PlayStation has ever released. It's filled with charm,? the script is funny, and the platforming still holds up to this day. Rather than the dark, depressing levels of the latter titles in the series with tacked-on gunplay, you get bright, colourful stages that test your platforming skills. It also has some fun vehicle segments as you go through the game's delightful story.

Killzone 3

Killzone 3

While the Killzone series has been long absent, the third entry still holds clout amongst fans. The campaign has blockbuster moments, the gunplay is heavy but makes you feel powerful, and the overall sci-fi look is gritty but stunning. The multiplayer, although taken down, was unique at the time as it played elements of the match in cinematic sequences, depending on how the objective was won or lost. It complimented the campaign well. Additionally, the PlaySt?ation Move is utilized excellently within thi??s FPS.

Uncharted 2 is one of the best PlayStation games
Image via PlayStation

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

One of the best PlayStation games that attracted many to the PS3 platform is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. From having an intense level on top of a moving train to zipping through a Nepalese city, the stakes and the Hollywood action were unmatched at the time. Nolan North's performance as Nathan Drake is phenomenal, with the best one-liners and emotional performances from the actor. The weapons feel great to control, and the action is top-notch, but the developer, Naughty Dog, knew how to calm down the action with engaging puzzles along the way. I hope an Uncharted revival is around the corner, either ??in the form of a sequel or a remake.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

This entry is likely controversial for many, but it truly is an outstandi??ng fighting game that suffered through many hardships. Despite Nintendo fans crying, "It's a Smash clone!" and the terrible online p??lay, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, at its core, is a thrilling platform fighter that deserves more acclaim. Linking combos into supers feels super satisfying, and the way the characters use moves from their original games is cool.

The stages also mashed two different games together, sometimes in unexpected ways. For example, you're fighting in Ratchet & Clank's Metropolis while a hydra from God of War attacks Qwark. It was a creative way of integrating more PlayStation representation. It deserved more of a shot, and PlayStation should think about returning to this idea with i??ts new games-as-a-service mo??del.

LittleBigPlanet

LittleBigPlanet is part of the Play, Create, Share era of PlayStation. This game has a surprising amount of creative tools available to?? players to make their own levels and share them around the world. It was impressive what some creators made, and in some cases, the developer Media Molecule hired them for jobs at the studio. Sackboy is the adorable icon of the series, and it was cute to see him run through these creative levels in all manner of outfits.

"LittleBigPlanet‘s amazing level creation tools and the en?ormous amount of quality online user-created content [..] come together to offer a separate (and superior) experience: a genuine 10.0 purchase," said our 2008 review. However, the reviewer found the offline content lacking.

Modnation Racers is an awesome kart racer
Image via PlayStation

Modnation Racers

One of PlayStation's most under-appreciated games is Modnation Racers. The gameplay feels arguably better than Mario Kart, and the creation tools at your disposal are incredible. You could create your own tracks with all manner of obstacles, make characters (and base them off popular pop culture icons if ??you wanted to), or form your ow??n kart with its custom designs. All of this was complimented by a fantastic online system, which lets you share your own creations and race with them online with other players. I miss this game, as it's now offline.

inFAMOUS 2 is a stellar action game from PlayStation
Image via PlayStation

inFAMOUS 2

Cole McGrath's story wrapped up in inFAMOUS 2, and it was a fantastic resolution. The town of New Marais, inspired by New Orleans, is exciting to explore, and Cole's ?new powers upped the ante. The graphics and art design were significantly improved over the rather generic original ad??venture, and the story features some intense narrative options that change the world around Cole. Unfortunately, this game is stuck on the PS3 and hasn't received a remaster of any kind, which is a huge shame.

The Last of Us Part 1 Ellie
Image via PlayStation

The Last of Us Part 1

Cinematic storytelling within games is a trend that really hit its high point with The Last of Us. This post-apocalyptic story tugs at the heartstrings of players as Joel and Ellie travel across the United States to help the Fireflies. It does a great job of building a kinship in the pseudo-father-daughter relationship and has us invested in what happens next. The combat is visceral as you try not to waste ammo and beat up your opponents by any means necessary. Additionally, the graphics are still striking today, especially if you play the remastered version of the game.

Journey is a masterpiece
Image via Annapurna Interactive

Journey

It's not often I cry when I play a video game, but Journey is such an emotional experience that I couldn't help myself. It tells the story of a soul traveling throughout its life, and along the way, you may meet a friend or two who help you on your journey. In the end, many realized their friends were played by strangers around the world. It's an incredible use of online functionality. The game itself is wonderful, with some fantastic set pieces, epic music by Austin Wintory, and gorgeous visuals that will stay with you for many years. It was in the running to be our Game of the Year in 2012.

Resistance 3

Another PS3 FPS series that has seemingly faded to dust is Resistance, and the third is arguably the best. As you'd expect from developer Insomniac Games, there are intriguing weapons available in Resistance 3 as they're mixed with alien technology. There is also an intriguing campaign that helped cap off the Resistance series with a mighty conclusion. "Its campaign is a thrill ride of rollercoaster-like set-pieces, huge boss battles, and consistently fast-paced action, and its multiplayer is a solid, enjoyable, anarchic complement," said our review, and I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately, the multiplayer has long been taken d??own.

Heavy Rain put cinematic games on the map.
Image via Quantic Dream

Heavy Rain

The PS3 generation began a trend of cinematic games, and Heavy Rain was at the forefront of that. Quantic Dream created a captivating story for players to follow as they try to figure out who the Origami Killer is and save the young boys who have been taken from their families. It feels like your choices and gameplay skills really change the storyline, making it a gratifying experience, at least for my teenage self when I played it. The music by Normand Corbeil is sensational and really pull us into the drama of Heavy Rain.

//youtu.be/RS0mpDh5aO4

rain

A smaller yet entertaining experience from PlayStation's library is rain on the PS3. You played as a child who is formed from the raindrops in the environment, and then he becomes invisible when you're in cover. It led to some creative sparks of puzzle gameplay within rain. The main objective is to find a lost girl within the Parisian landscape. "Calming and scary, amusing and sorrowful, rain is a game that jogs calmly through a gamut of emotions rather than sprints headlong into mood whiplash, and it’s incredibly difficult to ever dislike it, even during its twitchier moments," said our review.

God of War (2018)

The God of War series never clicked with me until the 2018 reboot released on the PS4. The monotonous combat and dull protagonist were replaced with more in-depth combat and believable characters you get invested in. Similar to Joel and Ellie in The Last of Us, players feel attached to Kratos and Atreus as they try to figure each other out and bond over a common threat. The powerful score by Battlestar Galactica composer Bear McCreery is also a highlight.

Ghost of Tsushima: Jin Sakai standing in a lush field.

Ghost of Tsushima

Another PS4 gem is Ghost of Tsushima. Jin Sakai's internal struggle between becoming a ghost an??d sticking to his samurai beginnings is captivating. The open world is a pleasure to explore with gorgeous Japanese scenary.? Additionally, the combat feels smooth and satisfying to pull off.

Jessica from Until Dawn, wearing a blue jacket and looking scared.

Until Dawn

One of the best horror games on PS4 is Until Dawn by Supermassive Games. The Butterfly Effect mechanic is brilliantly executed, giving you plenty of ways to experience the story. All of the playable characters could either live or die, making Until Dawn an exciting title to play through. It does have an overly long opening, but Until Dawn makes up for it with great set pi?eces and emotional moments between the characters.

Gravity Rush Remastered

Gravity Rush Remastered is an absolute gem every PlayStation fan should try. Flying through the air at a quick pace and running up walls are fantastic in this game. The storyline is intriguing as you explore the strange town of Hekseville. The art is also?? gorgeous with its anime/art-deco stylings.

Bloodborne is one of PlayStation's best games that needs a sequel
Image via PlayStation

Bloodborne

Initially, I was going to put Demon's Souls on this list instead, but I feel like I'd be roasted if Bloodborne is ignored. And they would be correct. This gothic RPG set a new standard for action-RPGs when it came out in 2015. The bosses are tough as hell but are designed immaculately. The atmosphere is grim but glorious??ly beautiful with its gothic buildings and the creepy citizens that dwell within it. The soundtrack is also impactful. A sequel or a remaster needs to happen on PS5. It's crazy it hasn't happened yet.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon: Forbidden West may not have set the world on fire, but Horizon Zero Dawn is a must-play game from the PS4 generation. It's one of the best PlayStation games because it has a unique post-apocalyptic premise. It takes place many years after civilization has fallen, and tribes have arisen in the aftermath. There's plenty of environmental storytelling around Aloy, with subtle hints as to what happened to past generations and the robots that roam the earth. The combat is also exhilarating, with a focus on archery and traps??? rather than the typical sword. Taking down massive mechanical beasts is a thrill.

Gran Turismo 7

You can't have a best PlayStation games list without mentioning the Gran Turismo series. It's been massively successful as it has a wide list of realistically rendered cars, accurate tracks from around the world, and smooth simulation controls. Driving fans flock to this series every time a new game comes out, and Gran Turismo 7 is the most recent.

Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart is one of the best PlayStation games

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

It is difficult to come up with just one Ratchet & Clank game for this list, but Rift Apart just takes it. Insomniac's weapon design in Rift Apart is phenomenal, and the game constantly wows audiences with its spectacular sci-fi worlds and set pieces. What helps the game is the use of the PS5's SSD, letting you zip between worlds and universes in a mat??ter of seconds. The addition of Rivet is also a plus, as she has a personality in spades.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 finally heads to PC this January
Image via PlayStation

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is an absolute triumph. It melds Peter Parker and Miles Morales' storylines perfectly, and each of these characters has unique powers at their disposal, making the campaign more gripping. It's a rush to swing around New York, and in Marvel's Spid?er-Man 2, you can use the web-wings to roam the Big Apple even faster. The addition of Venom and other villains into the storyline is a delight, and it adds plenty of drama to the mix.

//youtu.be/unYFdcEjV9k

Astro Bot

The most recent game on this list is Astro Bot, but it certainly deserves a spot. The platforming is spot-on and has very creative levels throughout the game. The character references to past PlayStation games are incredible for fans, and there are even segments that pay homage to them, like catching monkeys with a net with an Ape Esca?pe-themed level. Please play this game so we can get a sequel. Thanks!

Returnal is a thrilling shooter

Returnal

Returnal is bonkers hard, but man, is it a good game. The action is thick and fast as you explore a mysterious sci-fi world. You're going through loops over and over again, trying to defeat bosses and other foes with the weapons you collect in each run. It's challenging, but the stellar gameplay, matched with impressive visuals, make Returnal a game you should try on your PS5.

Get ready for some scares as Until Dawn is launching for the PS5 and PC on October 4, just a few weeks before Halloween. This Until Dawn remaster rel??ease date giv??es us enough time to gather your friends, microwave the popcorn, and enjoy the 2015 adventure all over again or for the first time.

Until Dawn has been rebuilt for the PS5 and PC (via Steam) with this release as it's been developed in Unreal Engine 5 like the upcoming Halloween game. PlayStation touts on its Blog it has "updated character models, environments, int??eractable props, visual effects, and animations, all designed to maximize the Until Dawn experience on both PS5 and PC."

Until Dawn looks stunning on PS5
Image via PlayStation Blog

Other visual ??effects include more realistic real-time fluids. This is so "you can see all the gory glory" in everyone's updated character deaths. There's also an injury mask system that shows the cuts, bruises, tears (and there will be plenty of them), snow, and water on this game's victims.

In addition, the game will support raytracing and enhanced materials to give you a chilling experience on either platform. If you haven't played Until Dawn before, this is a cin?ematic game that is deeply affected by yo?ur actions in-game with a mechanic called the Butterfly Effect.

All of your characters can die, and the game will end. The whole cast could indeed live, but you'll need to pick the right narrative choices and succeed with your button presses. Our review gave the game a decent 7/10 score, despite high acclaim from its audie?nce. "It allows for some predictable plotlines, hammy acting, and lack of meaningful choices, but I’m glad that it exists, and every horror fan owes it to themselves to play it at s?ome point especially at a price cut," it said.

As part of the PlayStation State of Play stream, Sony has confirmed the rumors that Until Dawn is getting remastered for PS5 and ??PC. In addi??tion, they’ve revealed that it will be coming in 2024.

//youtu.be/pnbxcNmUcQo?feature=shared

We heard murmurs that the remaster was going to be revealed less than a week ago. This news comes not long a??fter the announcement that the game is being adapted into a movie, which doesn’t seem that much of a departure from the game itself. The trailer shows off some fam?iliar and reworked scenes with a new lick of polish.

I’m going to be real with you; I didn’t play Until Dawn, so I don’t really know what ??I’m looking at. Still, cool fo??r fans. Probably.

The remaster of Until Dawn will release for PS5 and PC sometime in 2024.

It may be approaching nine years old at this point, but fans of Until Dawn may wish to know that Supermassive's interactive horror game could be coming to PS5 and PC. ?That's according to a??t least one report so far.

In a recent story from Billbil-kin over on Dealabs (as translated by IGN), an announcement could be arriving soon regarding a modern port of Until Dawn. It's a?lso possible that the r?umored enhanced version of the game has been in development for "at least a year."

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NcF7EOnjow

At the time of writing, there's been no official confirmation from developer Supermassive, Sony, or any other company officially associated with the game. What's interesting is this comes just a week after it was revealed Until Dawn was being adapted into a movie.

Isn't it basically a "movie" already?

If you've never played the game before, it's es??sentially an interactive slasher film in which you??'re tasked with navigating characters to safety from a serial killer. It was quite a horror hit when it launched in 2015. Sadly, it was only available on PS4 at the time, so a PlayStation 5 and PC version would be welcomed.

We actually think of it as one of the best horror games from the PlayStation 4 era, up there with the likes of Alien: Isolation and SOMA. Okay, some might not be a fan of? its minimal interaction largely reduced to quick time events but it was offering? something a little different in the genre.

As I said, we don't know whether there will be an enhanced versi?on of the game yet. This is just a rumor, so hopefully we'll get some feedback on whether? this is true or not.

A PlayStation horror classic is being reborn as a film. The choose-your-own-nightmare from Supermassive Games, Until Dawn, is one of the latest video games announced to make the jump from your living room TV to t?he big screen, though this one seems far more straightforward.

According to Hollywood Reporter, PlayStation Productions and Screen Gems are adapting 2015’s Until Dawn with direct?or David F. Sandburg and writer Gary Dauberman. The original tale revolved around eight teens surviving a fear-filled hell in the middle of a wintry retreat, entrusting their fate with the player.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAhX_IpVP1A

The film doesn't have a release date or casting yet. Hollywood Reporter notes Screen Gems describes the apparent R-rated adaptation as a love letter to the horror genre and centers its ensemble cast. No details on Until Dawn's story have been revealed yet, either. It's safe to say there's a clear-cut formula there for a film to follow, but perhaps Hollywood has a few tricks in store for a proper homage to Until Dawn's interactivity.

Cabin in the (Wintry) Woods

For those who don’t know, Until Dawn, released in 2015 by Supermassive Games, is an interactive horror where your actions have dire consequences. The title, which came out during an onslaught of choice-heavy games like Telltale’s The Walking Dead and Dragon Age: Inquisition, was a hit for players. The vast ways events can play out, terrifying ju?mpscares, and great cast (includi?ng now Oscar-winning actor Rami Malek) made it a staple of the PlayStation 4.

Fast forward to now, almost nine years since its release, it re-emerges thanks to PlayStation and Screen Gems. As previously mentioned, the film already has a director and writer attached. In the director’s chair is David F. Sandburg, who is most known for his Shazam films for DC.

David started in horror, directing Annabelle: Creation and Lights Out alongside writer Gary Dauberman. Gary is pretty big with horror, writing many of The Conjuring spin-off films like Annabelle and The Nun, as well as both It and It: Chapter Two. The script comes from a pass by Blair Butler (The Invitation).

Personally, the many lets-plays of Until Dawn (looking at you, Markiplier) convinced me to rent the game. It only took me some 30 minutes in to bail, thanks to th??e choice overload, so maybe watching someone else lead the way is more my speed. Therefore, I am curious to see what David, Gary, and the crew behind this new adaptation have in store. With the many game adaptations in the works right now, it's good to have some idea of where it'll go.

My biggest wish is for a killer cast, pun intended. Put some fresh and familiar horror actors in there and you'll have yourself a real strong horror film. And turn up the campiness. If?? it's going to be a love letter, you have to embrace the nostalgia and run with it. However, do be wary of branches. That's a QTE.

Spooky season is upon us

Halloween is my favorite holiday, and October is my favorite month of the year. Last year I dedicated four weeks of my column to be about storytelling in games that also related to Halloween, but it turns out that's a pretty niche topic to keep coming up with ideas for over and over. This year I've instead resigned myself to w?atching and playing as many Halloween related movies and games as I can, and I have to say that plan has done a trem?endous job of getting me in the spirit of the season.

There are a few games I come back to every year, chief among them being Until Dawn. It's a great game to play with friends, and it's scary enough to spook me, but not so scary that I have to sleep with the lights on. I'm a fan of the horror narrative adventure thing Dark Pictures has going on, but admittedly Until Dawn is the favorite I keep coming back to thanks to th??e characters. The all-star cast featuring favorites like Rami Malek, Jordan Fisher, and Hayden Panettiere really ro?unds out the whole experience for me.

Another game I never shut up about is The Last of Us, which is not on??ly my all time favorite game but also kind of relates to Halloween because, you know, zombies. Plus, there's nothing scarier than committing to love someone that the world constantly threatens to rip away from you at any moment. It's been a few years since I've played it, so I'm about due for a playthrough right now anyway. It's just a matter of whether or not I'm ready to be emotionally destroyed again. Who knows, maybe it might be cathartic.

Then of course there are the horror classics like the Resident Evil series, for example. One of my friends has a tradition where he has friends over and makes them play Resident Evil 7 in VR, but I have always been conveniently absent from those gatherings. I would maybe do it if someone offered me a large sum of money, but other than that, I wouldn't touch a virtual r??eality headset that was r??unning a horror game with a ten foot pole.

Resident Evil 7 PS5 version Molded screenshot

Now that Overwatch is back in full swing, you can bet your bottom dollar I'm looking forward to play the Junkenstein's Revenge Halloween event, which in my opinion is the best seasonal event the game has ever had. While the mode is usually starting mid-month, it's going to be here from October 25 to November 8, likely moved back because of Overwatch 2's early October release date. I still may be missing some a good handful of my skins, but at least I h?ave my Mercy witch skin to dress for the se??ason.

We want to know, what's your favorite game to play in honor of Halloween? Do you have any fond memories of playing spooky games? What's the best Halloween game to?? play with friends? Let u?s know in the comments down below!

A cinematic horror adventure from Supermassive Games with teens and supernatural scares

My favorite part of any Supermassive horror-adventure story is seeing which actors are on board. My second favorite part is trying to keep them well, most of them alive. After yesterday's tease, the studio behind Until Dawn (and The Dark Pictures Anthology) lifted the lid on The Quarry a "teen-horror na?rrative game" with plenty of familiar faces.

//youtu.be/Zh2K7SxRHmo

The story revolves around an extended cast of camp counselors, and Until Dawn director Will Byles is spearheading The Quarry, which will be reassuring news for fans of the PS4's mountain-lodge teen nightmare. I always liked the way?? that game playfully leaned into and then subverted certain tropes, but that can be a tricky balance?? to pull off.

The summary from Sup?ermassive and 2K also sounds super familiar in a good way.

"Hunted by blood-drenched loca?ls and something far more sinister, the teens' party plans unravel into an unpredictable night of horror. Friendly banter and flirtations give way to life-or-death decisions, as relationships build or break under the strain o??f unimaginable choices."

"Pl?ay as each of the nine camp counselors in a thrilling cinematic tale, where every choice shapes your unique story from a tangled web of possibilities. Any character can be the star of the show or die before daylight comes."

If you look closely at the screenshot up top, you might notice a mis??sing hand.

In terms of the core cast, you can see little profiles for everyone on the game's official site. We've got David Arquette as the camp owner, Ted Raimi as the s?mall-town sheriff, and nine counselors ranging from Justice Smith to Brenda Song to Miles Robbins. I'm also stoked to see fan faves like Lance Henriksen, Lin Shaye, and Grace Zabriskie on? the list.

Couch co-op is back, so you'll be able to divvy up control of the characters, and there's online multiplayer, in which up to seven "invited players" can "watch along and vote on key decisions." The Quarry also ha?s a Movie Mode that turns it into a "ci?nematic thriller."

[caption id="attachment_312785" align="alignnone" width="1920"]David Arquette as Chris in The Quarry David Arquette as Chris.[/caption]

The Quarry will launch on June 10, 2022, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox?? ?Series X/S.

The price point $60 on PS4 and Xbox One, $70 on PS5 and Series X/S is going to be a tough sell for a wide audience, but if all goes well, this game will be able to build up an audience over time like Until Dawn. High expectations, f?or sure. I'm hoping for the best.

These silly yet spooky "movie night" adventures are a blast with the right group, and I'm glad Supermassive can keep making them. That goes for The Dark Pictures Anthology, too.

Aww yeah, Until Dawn

If you haven't played Until Dawn, I highly recommend you do so. It's one of the funnest games with a room full of people, and lacking that, a room where you can turn all the lights off and just generall?y get creeped out. It's obviously leading the pack for July's PS Plus lineup, but it's not the only big entry.

With that, PS4 owners can also nab Telltale's Game of Thrones (just in time for the new season), PlayStation 3 users can get Tokyo Jungle (where's my sequel) and Darkstalkers Resurrection (RIP). Both of those are last gen gems, for s??ure.

Here's the full line-up:

 • Until Dawn - PS4
 • Game of Thrones - PS4
 • Tokyo Jungle - PS3
 • Darkstalkers Resurrection - PS3
 • Element4l - PS Vita
 • Don’t Die, Mr. Robot - PS Vita (Cross Buy on PS4)

Don't forget to look through Sony's big PSN sale too. Some pretty dang good st??uff going? on there as well.

First-person, PlayStation Move-centric gameplay

Before Supermassive Games shifted its teen horror adventure game Until Dawn to PlayStation 4, it was being designed for PlayStation 3 with the PlayStation Move controller in mind. It's one thing to remember that piece of history, and another to see an exte??nded look at the game as it once wa??s.

Aside from the snowy lodge setting and some basic plot points, this is at times unrecognizable from the Until Dawn we ultimately got. It's first-person, with PlayStation Move quick-time events and more hands-on puzzle-solving and world interaction. That design might sound questionable on paper, but watching this footage, there's clearly something cool here. It's not flat-out inferior to the finished Until Dawn so much as it's just... different. Like an alternat?e-universe version of a game many ??of us dig.

D?efinitely set aside some time to watch this. After a short introduction, the video is just gameplay.

It won't be breaking up with Sony just yet, though

Until Dawn developer Super??massive Games is ready to branch out onto other platforms beyond the PlayStation 4.

Talking to MCV, Supermassive’s MD Pete ?Samuels said he’s loved working with Sony, but the studio is keen to branch out.

“We&rsquo??;ve worked closely with Sony for as long as the studio has been around, so the past eight years,” Samuels said.

“I&rsquo?;ve loved it, they are great to work with and we have a stron?g relationship with them. I think a lot of the work we do with them aligns well with what we want to do and where we want to go.

“But yes, we are an independent studio and we are keen, going forward, to bring our games to wider audiences than we have in the past. That&rsqu?o;s what we are all about right now, and it’s an exciting time for us.”

Don’t expect this to happen any time soon, though. With the developer’s next two games - Tumble VR and Until Dawn: Rush of Blood - exclusive to P??layStation VR, its not looking for the exit door just yet.&n??bsp;

Real scary, probably

This news is a little bit old because we reported it last week, but now it's confirmed. Super scary horror game Until Dawn is getting a spinoff, Rush of Blood, that will be playable on PlayStation VR.

It's a ways off in the distance b??ecause PlayStation VR won't release until next year, but it's coming nonethel??ess. Should be a nice little push for both the peripheral and the IP.

On rails, VR, and Wendigos

[Update: Rush of Blood was announced a??s a stand alone VR title at Paris Games Week. Told you internet, it's legit?].

According to an email received today by Destructoid, verified and confirmed through a second independent source, Sony is currently performing market testing in the UK on a piece of Until Dawn DLC, tentatively titled Rush of Blood.

The DLC, which appears to?? be an on-rails first-person shooter, is being designed to work with PlayStation VR.

Well you get transported around inside a mine cart; it's very literally an on-rails experience. There are a few scattered jumpscares, as you'd expect, but I played the same 20 minute section twice (once with DS4, once with dual Move controllers), so I'm hop?ing the full DLC is a lot more padded out. I didn't see ?which character I was playing as, I'm not sure if it's specified, but no names were mentioned at all.

It starts off shooting targets in the snow, then moves toward a house and as you get deeper into the house, enemies start appearing (I believe they were Wendigos). The frequently reused jumpscare is the 'ghost' from inside the house in Until Dawn, who you end up fighting for the final area I play??ed. Upon killing the ghost, the game would crash every time.

While it's currently unclear how far along this DLC project is, it seems like it's set in the same areas as the main ga?me, and relies heavily on motion controls.

So, how do you feel about the prospect of on-rails, virtual-reality Until Dawn DLC?

Working on a fix

It was odd, to say the least, to see Sony directly blocking Until Dawn archiving on Twitch, but according to the publisher, it was a mixup.

I reached out to Sony, who responded with the following note: "We are currently working on a fix that will enable archiving of Until Dawn Twitch streams as this feature was unintentionally disabled. We are humbled ??by the community reception of the game and are excited to see fans sharing experiences on Twitch and YouTube. We apologize for the inconvenience and will provide an update as soon as the issue has been resolved."

I mean, the move kind of made sense. It would be similar to streaming a movie that just released on Blu-ray -- the game is basically an interactive film, even more-so than a lot of other recent adventure efforts??.

This isn't how to do pre-order DLC

Over the past three nights I've watched my lovely boyfriend and our hunky Australian roommate stream Until Dawn and after finishing the game we decided to play the pre-order DLC chapter "The Road Not Taken" only we couldn't find it. Turns out we ??already had.

After researching online and finding many people were also confused I figured I'd get to the bottom of this and clear up the confusion. The DLC really isn't a standalone chapter, but the final sectio?n of chapter two where the new couple Emily and Matt go back to look for her bag after Emily gets into an argument at the cabin. It mostly contains conversations between the couple about their relationship and?? Emily's past with Mike.

Basicall??y not a whole lot happens, and you're not missing ??out on much.

Pre-order DLC shouldn't be a part of the main story ripped out and held ransom, no matter how insignificant it may seem. The fact that this section doesn't have a menu option or any reference in the game as it being DLC?? makes it seem like it was just that, content pulled from the main story to dangle in front of consumers like a carrot to a donkey. I dislike pre-ordering and pre-order DLC in general, but at the very least make it something cosmetic or optional, not part of the main story of the game.

Before anyone tries to call me a hypocrite, I pre-ordered the game a few hours before release to preload it. After having watched a full playthrough of Until Dawn I have to agree with Chris' review and s?ay it is a pretty enjoyable game, especially for horror fans. Just know that if you didn't pre-order it, you're missing out on actual main game content which hasn't b??een announced for release separately thus far.

Affects those streaming from the PS4

If you were planning on streaming Until Dawn using your PS4's Share button on Twitch, archiving it, then s?haring it with others who were not available for the live broadcast, you may run in to some trouble.

Apparently, Sony is allowing players to stream Until Dawn on Twitch, bu?t have disable?d the ability to archive those streams.

According to Twitch Support, this only affects Until Dawn streamers using the PS4's built-in sharing tools. If you use an external PC device like an Elgato you should still be able to archive your streams??.

While it appears this move was?? made by Sony to avoid the spread of spoilers for the game, it's interesting to note that Twitch is in talks to try and remove this restriction. I wo?nder if it has the sway to change Sony's mind or not.

So, how?? do you gang of murder??ed teens in the comments feel about this?

PS4s are too scared to load it

The PlayStation Network is preventing some early adopters of Until Dawn from playing the game.

According to reports on reddit, most gamers are able to download the game without?? incident, but on launch, they're informed that it will be “128 days until [the game is] available.”

It appears that the problem is most??ly affecting players who pre-ordered the game very early on, and before the release date was revised.

“Our store team is currently investigating the issue. We’ll update the thread once we receive an update,” said a Sony support member. As always, we'll keep you updated!

Are you able to play it yet? (I'm not. Stupid UK release dates). In our review, we said that "Until Dawn knows exactly what it is, and doesn't pretend to be anything more. In that process it allows for some predictab?le?? plotlines, hammy acting, and lack of meaningful choices, but I'm glad that it exists, and every horror fan owes it to themselves to play it at some point."

Spooky teen hell dream

I had a chance to play the first few chapters of Until Dawn recently, and it ended at the worst possible moment. Whereas the first hour or so is slowly setting the table for all of the craziness that is about to e?nsue, when everything hits the fan, it hits hard.

Having completed the entire game at this point, I now know that while it doesn't succeed in everythi?ng it sets out to do as an adventure experience, most fans of the genre will dig it as a campy horror game.

Until Dawn (PS4)
Developer: Supermassive Games
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Release Date: August 25, 2015
MSRP: $59.99

[There will be no major spoilers in this review, but the video may contain minor event spoilers.]

Our tale starts off a year before th?e main storyline with a prelude of sorts, in a cabin high up on an isolated Canadian mountaintop. A bunch of "teens" (I use that term lightly as they all look 30) have gathered for some weekend shenanigans, and of course, something goes awry, leading to the mysterious death of two sisters. A year later, the surviving members of the group decide to go back to?? the same location (I know, right?), bringing all sorts of emotional baggage with them.

Most of you have probably seen this type of campy setup before, but this is exactly what Until Dawn is going for. Soon enough you'll start to see the action ratchet up a bit, as more of the mystery of the mountain is revealed, and a psycho killer shows up, creating some Saw-like situations -- real sick shit. You'll also start to learn a lot more about the characters' motivations, and their relationships with one another, which y?ou can (minimally) influence by way of light choices.

By "light," I mean typical Telltale options that don't really influence the game in any meaningful way. The main gimmick here is the "Butterfly Effect," which will branch out your personal story, complete with a butterfly icon explosion on-screen and a handy menu option that lets you view your past choices. It can range from something significant like whether or not you want to risk your life saving a friend, or what door you took in an abandoned building. When the butterflies pop up, it's basically Supermassive's way of sayi??ng "this character will remember that." Without spoiling anything, most choices don't matter until the end of the game, where character deaths ??start to happen more often.

Outside of the choic??e mechanic that basically amounts to moving an analog stick in the desired direction, there's lots of walking involved, coupled with QTEs for the action bits. It's unimaginative at times, especially in the shaky intro sections, as those long roads seems to be there mostly to pad the game. After all, there's only so many plain paths you can take in the woods before it gets boring.?? But after the two hours, more interesting locations start to pop up, which house interesting documents and more bits of lore for you to locate. This is where the game excels.

Despite the above issues, I was inspired to play Until Dawn from start to finish in one setting. It was interesting enough where it kept me captivated throughout, and the game is exceptionally good at world-building. While I initially didn't care about the whole meta-narrative surrounding the mountain, I quickly changed my tune as I acquired more totem collectibles -- artifacts that each unlock a few seconds of a secret video that gives you a bit more background on the events of the game. Also, all the Resident Evil&??nbsp;style letters and notes are all done very well.

Where recent David Cage efforts fail for me is the over-emphasis on performances that end up wooden, and a terrible plot that begs to be taken seriously. Thankfully, while other elements of the game may not be all that riveting or new, Until Dawn dives in with? both feet on the horror theme. Sure it's not an excuse ?for some campy performances, but you really know what you're getting here, and there's no bait and switch involved. The script is also occasionally funny, as are the performances from the (mostly) talented cast. I have to say, it's really weird seeing Brett Dalton as anything other than Grant Ward, but he's mostly enjoyable to watch.

My general enjoyment of the core cast goes double for "The Analyst" sections of the game featuring the always delightful Peter Stormare. These portions are easily the best part of the experience, as a mysterious psychologist asks you series of questions (usually?? about your fears) in various interludes of sorts after each chapter concludes. It slowly gets darker and more twisted over time, and they really nail the tension here.

So how long is the game? My playthrough took roughly seven hours, and you'l?l have the option to replay chapters individually to rectify past wron??gs or try out new choices. There's also a few extras involved in the form of little video featurettes that you can probably watch on YouTube in a week. If you aren't keen on hunting for collectibles, you can try to change the ending into one you desire.

Until Dawn knows exactly what it is, and doesn't pretend to be anything more. In that process it allows for some predictable plotlines, hammy acting, and lack of meaningful choices, but I'm glad that it exists, and every horror ??fan owes it to themselves to play it at some point -- especially at a price cut.

[This review is based on a retail build of the game provided by the publisher.]

*Sigh* You won't listen

I urge you, Until Dawn kids: Don't go on that winter getaway. It seems like a lot of f?un, but it won't be. It's not all drinkin??g and partying and sexing.

??There will be a scary guy in a scary mask doing scary things. Your friends will make bad decisions, and all of a sudden there will be a saw blade inches from your neck. Bad times ahoy??.

Stay home. Study. Apply for a few more scholarships. Invest in your future, b??ecause if you go on this trip, your future will be all of 48 more hours or so.

Until Dawn brings the frigid frights on August 25, but Chris has alrea??dy played it and saw many a murdered teen. Find out if this one's on thin ice next Monday when his review goes up.

It's not impossible

Since the beginning of time, sexy teens have been going out into the woods to do naughty things and get slaughtered. It's the circle of life. This time-honored tradition is well-documented in many films of ?the 1980s.

Until Dawn will explore this cultural phenomen??on through the video game medium. Before that, we can try our hand at YouTube with this interactive trailer. Defend, go back, or explore. Which will you do, showering lady? All are equally terrifying prospects.

If YouTube videos don't quit scratch your teen-murdering itch, Until Dawn isn't far ??away. It? launches on August 25, which seems about perfect for all those summer camps that are winding down.

Murder at Teen Mountain

I'm a sucker for horror, even if it dips in "B," heck, "C" territory. While I can turn off my brain and enjoy slasher and gore flicks like the Saw series (they walk?? the line of "so bad it's good" so well), more often than not, a good horror movie has the potential to dig its hooks in me to the point where I want to see the story through until the very end.

That basically sums up my feelings on the first four chapters of Until Dawn -- cheesy?? as hell, but? enough to keep me watching.

Until Dawn (PS4)
Developer: Supermassive Games
Publisher: Sony
Release: August 25, 2015

This is largely the same experienced that's been teased f??or the past few years or so -- a horror movie simulator with stars like Hayden Panettiere, Rami Malek, Brett Dalton, and Nichole Bloom lending their likenesses and performances to t?he experience. As previously stated I played the first four episodes, which is roughly three hours, and enough time to ramp up the "horror" bit of the plot after three episodes of table-setting.

Yes, this is very much an adventure experience similar to Indigo Prophecy and Shenmue, complete with mild exploration and plenty of quick-time events, so you can show yourself out if that's still not your thing. Until Dawn started its life as a Move game, but thankfully Sony has retreated on that device over the years, and it's no??w possible to play it with a traditional co??ntroller scheme or controller-based motion.

After a cheesy intro explaining the butterfly effect (like no one saw the Ashton Kutcher movie here), Until Dawn places you a year before the current storyline, in a snowy isolated cabin in the woods. You'll learn of the tragedy that happened there through the eyes of the victims, which sets up the ensuing (and illogical) return to a year later, where all of the remaining friends attempt to move on with their lives. The key plot point here is that they don't know the deaths were actually murders, and they're setting themselves up for the same possible fate -- I mean, they should know, but this is a horror work after all.

Visually, I actually dig the move to the PlayStation 4, and there are very little remnants of it being a PS3 game. I feel like with Arkham Knight we've finally started to move on in terms of fidelity, and I'm noticing the generational gap with each passing month. The setting is also sufficiently gloomy and impressive, but sadly, I experienced severe ;slowdown during so?me action? sequences -- as in, sub-30 FPS -- something I hope is fixed in the final version.

Gameplay mostly consists of walking around, picking up and manipulating items (like Resident Evil), and making choices that can either modify short-term conversations and actions, or long-term decisions that will drastically change the narrative, and perhaps even kill off major characters. Although I haven't gotten the full taste of this mechanic in just four episodes, it already feels far more impactful than any recent Telltale game. Telltale is great at telling its story, but that's just it -- it's its story for the most part. Until Dawn gives m??e hope that multiple playthroughs will be worth it.

It's all very linear though, which I'm sure will scare some people away. There's very little in the way of exploration, to the point where at most, there's only one stray path (and it's usually obvious) to take beyond the other road that continues the story. QTEs, Until Dawn has 'em, and they're here in spades. Pers?onally I still don't mind them, even if they're a cheap device when overused, so your mileage may vary here. As for myself, I found them to be en??tertaining and helped fuel the endearing cheese-factor of the package. And I mean that with sincerity -- this doesn't feel like a cash-in, but a proper love letter to horror in general, complete with a great atmosphere and creepy, ingenious camera angles.

Cheesy it may be, but I actually wanted to find out more about the game's world, and that's where Until Dawn e?xcels -- lore building. You can find totems that show tiny visions of the future (good or bad, but mostly bad), which eventually complete a little meta-narrative on the history of the surrounding area, and a possible curse that dates back hundreds of years. I also wanted to find out exactly who the assailants were and what their motivations are -- and I won't even spoil the insanely interesting meta-narrative with the always talented Peter Stormare.

My gut is telling me that Until Dawn is going to turn out far better than the lackluster Heavy Rain or Beyond: Two Souls, and having grown up with the adventure genre, I'm ??excited to see what it can dish out. I suspect like many horror movie staples, this one is going to be pretty polarizing upon r??elease regardless of your opinion on these types of games though.

Everyone can die

Oh, hey,?? that's digital Peter Stormare! How eerily accu??rate.

He's going to be in Until Dawn, the upcoming choice-driven survival horror game for PlayStation 4 in which pretty young people are stranded at a remote lodge with a stab-happy killer (and a demon dog? What was that noise at the end of the trailer?).

Developer Supermassive Games has settled on August 25, 2015 for the launch. I want all games to be good, but I extra?? hope that this one turns ou?t well.

That's the way these things go

It's part two of the Valentine's Day Massacre, But, instead of mobsters in a warehouse, it's adolescents in the woods. Still, the result's similarly gruesome in Until Dawn.

?Valentine's Day might be?? about romance and love, but judging by this trailer, no one should expect to last until dawn.

Run, Hayden Panettiere, run!

Also?, don't hi?de under a bed right after he begins to chase you.

This is Until Dawn, Supermassive's cinem?atic PlayStation 4 game about eight? friends vacationing at a lodge where a masked killer happens to be on the loose.

The story will branch out based on your actions, which is some?thing we've heard promised time and time again. At least here, any and all of the characters can die. I like the sound of that.

Our pal Mike Cosimano (who, in all seriousness rivals Jonathan Holmes when it comes to kindness and all-around positivity) was our video editing man at PAX Prime earlier this month. I made sure he got a chance to check out some games he wanted to see, and two of those games were Until Dawn and Bloodborne

Both of those games were too scary for me and Bill to cover, so Mike did us a solid and summed u??p his thoughts in this lovely vi??deo, though first he had to go to back to college and then attend a Transformers convention. Sorry for the delay!

The Butterfly Effect

Supermassive Games' Pete Samuels and Will Byles held a behind-closed-doors session during gamescom to give us a better look into upcoming PS4 horror title Until Dawn. During that session they explained how their PS3 Move-only campy teen horror title transformed into a PS4 adult horror, starring top-tier actors and featuring high-end t?echnologies.

Until Dawn is all about player choice, offering thousands of ??play paths that lead to hundr??eds of possible endings. A lot of this is tied to one of the game's mechanics called the Butterfly Effect.

As eight friends stranded in a mountain get??away work to survive, you'll control each of them, making choices for them. The paths you go down take every action into consideration, from small choices, like choosing to pick up a book, to large moral dilemmas. You might have to decide to shoot your friend in the head, for example.

This is important as Until Dawn was designed so that every character can survive and/or die. And if they die, they stay dead -- no restarts here. The game will ad??apt the story if a character dies, so every decision you make can alter the story completely.

During some of these choices, a small butterfly icon will appear in the upper right side of the screen. This indicates that the Butterfly Effect is underway. Pulled straight from chaos theory, the butterfly effect has it so that any one small change can bring about larger changes further down the road. For the purposes of Until Dawn,???? any one choice you make can have you going down any one path, eventually ending up at one of any of the hundreds of endings.

To demonstrate, Samuels shared a great visual that I wish we had a copy of. Using an image of a butterfly, its very center represented the story's origin. Highlighted veins branching from that center represented the first few choices, and ??all of the subsequent branches fanned out to the very ends of the butterfly's wings, with each end representing the hundreds of possible endings. The branches fanned out and connected at various points along their length, representing the thousands of poss?ible paths.

So opening the wrong door, picking up the right c??lue, or saying something when you should have said something else will take you down your own path. There's a good chance that your path and ending will be nothing like your friend's path and ending. As the game progresses, there's a good chance that two people won't see the same sc?enes or hear the same dialogue.

Believe it or not, Supermassive shot and recorded every possible scene and outcome for these branches and endings. They believe that being able to experience your choices adds to the suspense and horror of Until Dawn so they went to the trouble of auditioning 200 actors before getting to their current cast, which includes TV star Hayden Panettiere. They wanted only top actors to fit with the high-definition capture and high volume of voice work requ?ired. From what I saw, they've done a nice job with both the casting and capture.

Supermassive has come a long way from the campy PS3 Move game they showed here at gamescom two years ago. They went from flashlight scare??s to a full-fledged PS4 playable horror movie that lets the player decide on its story and outcome. What an overhaul!

It's all about the butterfly effect

I am a little baby when it comes to horror movies. I just can’t. I can’t sit and force myself to stare at a screen that will make me scream and flinch. That’s not fun to me! The oppo?site is true when it comes to horror videogames for some weird reason. I love them, though I’m still a baby that screams at them.

Until Dawn seems like a perfect marriage of horror films and horror games. The Hollywood talent is providing stellar acting, while you have full control over what’s going on within the game. The big driving force behind Until Dawn is the butterfly effect of chaos theory. All your choices will have? consequences that alter how the story unfolds in a variety of ways.

Until Dawn (PlayStation 4)
Developer: Supermassive Games
Publisher: Sony
Release: 2015

The story sees eight fr??iends trapped? together while a killer is on the loose. Anyone and everyone can die, and you can end the game with maybe just one friend, or if you’re really good all of your friends. One playthrough will take roughly 10 hours and there’s going to be a lot of replayability here.

My hands-on demo b?egan as a male and female char?acter were looking for one of their lost friends. Controls are extremely simple as you move with the left stick, adjust the camera in small ways with the right stick, and your main character’s flashlight is controlled by the motion controls on the controller. X and R2 were also used to interact with various objects.

The core tenants of horror are present in Until Dawn, and tons of spooky stuff was happening. Ghosts were walking around, there w??ere a ton of bloodied weapons laying about, and just a lot of general weirdness was happening to scare the characters, and potentially the player too.

One thing that helped set the tension was the fixed camera angles. A lot of the rooms had the camera fixed in a certain position, and it reminded me a lot of the original Resident Evil games.

From the objects you find to the decisions you make, your game will be altered ?in many different ways. Every time you make a choice that matters you’ll see a little butterfly appear in the user interface to indicate your story’s trajectory has been altered.

At one point I picked up a pair of scissors and used it as a self defense mechanism against the killer. You don’t have to take the sci?ssors, though. Whatever you decide will matter down the road in some form or another. The immediate actions of my decision here though meant I was able to stab the killer, but he was able to knock me out regardless. Perhaps the wound I gave the killer will come back to save me down the line?

Choices like in The Walking Dead will happen here too. At one point, I had th?e option of exploring another room or following my friend into a room they were trying to get into. At the end of the demo, the two characters were tied down to chairs with giant chainsaw blades coming down towards them. At that moment I had to choose between shooting myself or my friend.

While there’s a lot of choices in your action, the overall level design of this par??ticular area felt like it was just driving?? me forward on a set path. There were some minor puzzles to solve, but nothing all that challenging. I hope there’s more to the exploration than what was on offer here.

The atmosphere is one thing, but the acting and motion-capture work is what really sold me on Until Dawn. I felt fully immersed and could really feel my heart beating faster. I’m so glad the game moved away from its original? campy vision.

"Originally it was more of a Move-focused game for the ??PS3," associate producer Vicky Miller told Destructoid. "It was very much a really campy teen horror geared towards a more young audience. When the decision was made to bring it on to PS4, we really wanted a more mature feel to the ?game [as] the audience is different.

"We brought in the Hollywood horror directors, Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick, and they worked with higher caliber talent like Hayden Panettiere. We did full performance capture, and really focused on making it more of a true horror game. Where you have suspense, terror, there’s mystery, there’s moral dilemmas that you have to face to kind of give this very immersive?? horror experience?? that you’re actually participating in."

Visually the game was looking just fantastic. It’s the Killzone: Shadow Fall engine and developer Supermassive Games has worked with Guerrilla in the past on Killzone.?? So the team knows how to u??se the engine to best fit its vision.

Horror games are on the rise again this generation, and I'm glad we're getting a different take on the genre with what Until Dawn is trying to accomplish.

'Everyone can survive. Everyone can die.'

After all of those icy, blood-filled teasers out of Sony, we finally have our confirmation that they were leading up to Until Dawn. Originally announced back in ?2012 for PlayStation 3, it's essentially a videogame take on slasher movies. Now, it's back, r??ebuilt for PS4.

The tone looks noticeably different than what was shown yea??rs ago, and there's a nice bump in visual fidelity too. Really looking forward to this one based on th?e premise alone.

It'll be out next year.

Also, questions on the logistics of murder

Sony released a creepy new trailer for the upcoming "teen horror" game from Supermassive, Until Dawn. There's a creepy cabin, buzzsaws, a dude who looks like he's having a ?bit of a bad day and P??olaroids of kids with numbers on them. Looks like Halloween to me.

I just have a few questions. How did the killer get the guy suspended like that? A winch? I can't imagine you'd get such a reliable, quick result from a hand crank and ?pulleys. Would you need to rent a special one, or would I just be able to use the kind yo?u see on pick-up trucks? Why do I ask? Oh, no reason. Just curious.

It's been a time since I watched a proper, hormone-fueled horror film where 80% of characters under the age of 25 are expected to die. Probably not since the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street back in 2010. I assume the formula is p?retty much unchanged, but we rarely see that kind of horror in ?our videogames, so I'm pretty enthusiastic about checking this out.

Announced at gamescom earlier this year, Until Dawn puts players in ?control of the cast of characters in what looks to be a classic te?en horror film. It's a PS3 title set for next year, and it uses the PlayStation Move controller exclusively.

I got a full walkthrough of one particularly horny extened segment of the game here at New York Comic-Con. It followes characters Jessica and Michael as they head out and away from the lodge. The folks with ??them on this group trip have had enough of their horniness, and have sent them away to do their thing in a secluded cabin in the woods.

If you've seen enough horror flicks, you probably know how this goes. ?;

Jess and Mike are pretty hot to trot by this ti??me, but they're not opposed to taking a little stroll in the woods to find this cabin. They make an adventure out of it, trying to scare each other as they trudge through the snow in the dark. Animals moving in the woods spook them a bit, but they're still having fun. For now.

The fun of Until Dawn is in its presentation. It plays out exactly like a horror film, complete with the pop-out scares and sharp, snarky writing you'd expect. There's also plenty in the way ??of funny dialogue and situations, coming directly from well-versed horror film writers.

Until Dawn is unique in that it uses the PS Move controller exclusively. Most of the time it serves as a flashlight for the eight game characters. Movement is controlled by pointing the torch in the desired direction, and the analog trigger controls the speed of movement. The main action button on the controller takes care of most of the world interactions and puzzle solving. In the times where a character is using an item, 1:1 movement of the Move controller lets the play?er take over. Turning a key, pull?ing blinds, or firing a gun are done exactly as you'd expect.

The trek to the cabin stays fun until the couple hears a strange noise and soon after finds a deer that looked to be ripped open by something terrible. As they examine it, it's ripped away. Scared shitless, they take off ru??nning until they find the cabin, and then they lock themselves inside.

In the normal world, strange noises and dead animals would have killed the mood??. But in the world of horror flicks, the lovebirds are ready to rock in minutes. First, Jess insists, the blinds must be closed and the firep?lace must be warm. More strange noises hinder their progress for a bit, but eventually Michael gets her down to panties and bra.

Just when the getting gets good, Jessica is violently ripped through the window of the front door by some unseen attacker, leaving a trail of blood out ??the door and through the snow, leading out to the woods. Mike runs to follow the trail, rifle in hand. This leads him into the depths of an abandoned mining operation, where he finds Jessica's maimed body laying in a heap on a lift. Just as the attacker sneaks up o??n Mike the screen goes black.

If you're keen on this particular kind of teen horror flick, I think you'll really enjoy Until Dawn. It stretches the typical movie story into a 5 or more ho?ur adventure where you'll eventually control each of the eight cast members. They all can die, or you can complete the game with al??l surviving -- it's up to you.

I could see Until Dawn being a great game to play with a small group, with the lights out and c?old beers on hand. The group could make calls on how to proceed, and the Move controller could be passed? off.

I'm looking forward to popping some popcorn for Until Dawn.
