After much anticipation, the anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s iconic horror manga Uzumaki has finally arrived. Known for its eerie atmosphere, twisted visuals, and psychological dread, Uzumaki has long been hailed as one of the most haunting works in the horror g??enre.

Fans have eagerly awaited its transformation from page to screen. And now, with its debut on Adult Swim’s Toonami block, Uzumaki is bringing Ito’s nightmarish vision to life.

Studio Drive is in charge of the anime's production, while Production I.G. USA and Adult Swim co-produce the series. The anime was initially set to debut in 2020, but it faced a series of delays that pushed the release back multiple times.

Production issues postponed the series in 2021, then complications arising from the COVID-??19 pandemic further delayed the project to October 2022. But in mid-2022, the creators made the difficult decision to delay the project indefinitely, stating their desire to ensure that the adaptation was not just visually stunning but also true to the spirit of Junji Ito’s original work.

Unlike the previous teasers, the new trailer offers a deeper glimpse into the disturbing, spiral-driven horrors that the mini-series will deliver. Fans are treated to haunting visuals of the unsettling spiral curse that plagues Kurozu-cho, alon??gside eerie transformations of the town's inhabitants.

The anime adaptation of Uzumaki was initially slated for release in 2020, but production faced multiple delays. It was initially pushed to 2021, then October 2022 due to COVID-19. In June 2022, however, the anime was delayed indefinitely due to the creators' desire to ensure a faithful and high-quality adaptation. After a fou?r-year wait, the haunting four-episode mini-series is?? finally set to air.

Renowned director Hiroshi Nagahama (Mushi-Shi and The Flowers of Evil) helms the series, alongside a production team consisting of Studio Drive, Studio Akatsuki, Production I.G. USA, and Adult Swim. Composer Colin Stetson, known for his work on Hereditary, is composing the music.

For those unfamiliar with the source material, Uzumaki is a horror masterpiece by Junji Ito. Set in the foggy coastal town of Ku?rozu-cho, the story follows Kirie Goshima and her boyfriend Shuichi Saito as they witness terrifying spiral-related phenomena that begin to consume their town. What starts as ??strange obsessions and mysterious markings evolves into a town-wide curse as the spiral shape takes over the lives and minds of the inhabitants.

During its panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Adult Swim unveiled a new trailer for its long-awaited anime adaptation of Junji Ito's seminal horror manga Uzumaki. This spine-caffeinating preview didn't stop at showcasing the anime's distinct art style, either; it also revealed Uzumaki will hit Adult Swim this fall.

Adult Swim and Production I.G's Uzumaki will air in September

Uzumaki's ??latest trailer made my skin want to run away from home to join the carnival down the road. It also proved that Drive’s done a fantastic job adapting Ito’s distinct, detailed style into animation. After the trailer smash cuts from one of?? the manga’s most terrifying scenes to the anime’s title card (and Colin Stetson's incredible score winds down), we’re left to stare at the series�release date; Saturday, September 28, 2024.

We’ve known for a long time that Uzumaki will be a four-episode miniseries. Episodes will air on Adult Swim’s Tonami?? block at 12:30 A.M. before making their way into Max. If the series follows a weekly release schedule, the finale will air on October 19, 2024.

Uzumaki's release date brings a five-year-long wait to an end

Two months seems like a long time, and it is, but it’s nothing compared to the five years Ito fans have been waiting for Uzumaki to get a concrete release date. Adult Swim announced its plans to adapt what many see as Ito’s magnum opus in 2019, with an original release date of Fall 2022. Unfortunately, the production team pushed Uzumaki’s release date three times. An official memo from Drive stated that the series�production team wanted to ensure the??y were doin??g Ito’s work justice and didn't want to rush the production.

As frustrating as Uzumaki's delays are, this new trailer proved that the wait was worth it. Ito’s work is infamously hard to adapt, with previous attempts like 2018’s Junji Ito Collection and Junji Ito’s Maniac failing to recapture the mangaka's iconic style. Luckily, Uzumaki’s tr?ailer proved that Drive spared no?? expense in bringing the panels of Ito's most terrifying tale to life.

Uzumaki follows Kirie Goshima and her boyfriend Shuichi Saito, a pair of listless teenagers born and raised in Kurouzu-cho, a quiet town nestled in the hills of rural Japan. When a mysterious “Spiral “curse�?unleashes a torrent of terrifying supernatural incidents on the city and its people, Kirie and Shuichi plan to flee the town before the curse twists and furls them into something unrecognizable.
