Readers may know me as one of Destructoid's local Destiny heads, but right now, we need to talk about the Video Game Awards (VGA). Namely, how Cyberpunk 2077 stole a 2023 award from ??another game and studio.

On December 7, the VGA named Cyberpunk 2077 the winner of the ceremony's Best Ongoing Game award. This was in spite of the fact that Cyberpunk went up against actual live service titles like Apex Legends, Fortnite, Genshin Impact, and Final Fantasy XIV. 

As some may remember, Cyberpunk 2077 is not an "ongoing game." It's a single-player game and one that was released with disastrous initial results. The launch was so awash with issues that Sony would even quickly remove it from the PSN digital storefront. CD Projekt RED would go on to spend the better part of three years f?ixi??ng the game.

As of 2023, the team has produced praise-worthy results with Cyberpunk 2077's 2.0 update. But the VGA's nomination logic seems flawed. So, the single-player Cyberpunk 2077 is an "ongoing game" because it was released so broken it needed years of? work to function as intended? I'm not buying it.

How is the VGA defining an "ongoing game?"

Cyberpunk's win doesn't make sense when considering the spirit of the award category. The award should have gone to a live-service title that defines itself as an "ongoing game" by nature rather than circumstance. If Cyberpunk 2077 can be considered in the r??unning for t??he best ongoing game, what criteria is the VGA using? 

If Cyberpunk can be in the running, what about other games with updates still flowing? Warhammer 40K: Darktide, No Man's Sky, and Call of Duty: Warzone have all received game-changing updates after release. None of those games even received nominations. Hell, even a pick as out there as Team Fortress 2 still has more merit as an actual "ongoing game" than Cyberpunk 2077. So how could the obvious top-running candidates with nominations against Cyberpunk 2077 lose?

Don't get me wrong, what CD Projekt RED did was impressive. Many studios would rather take the L than spend additional years that could have been applied to another project fixing mistakes. I am in no way suggesting CD Projekt RED made the wrong decision there. The team's dedication to its product speaks for itself. However, I am saying that the VGA's evaluation of Cyberpunk 2077 as an "ongoing game" is wrong.

Another title missed out

With Cyberpunk winning this award, another deserving game missed out. The contenders for Best Ongoing Game, by nature, are unlikely to be nominated for many other categories. Sure, they may appear in less extravagant categories like Best Mobile Game or Best ESports Game. But the titles that end up in Best Ongoing Game are by nature rarely going to win the "big" awards like Game Of The Year. A game can't be Game Of The Year and ??Best Ongoing Game the year it'??s released; it's just not possible.

So, Cyberpunk 2077's nomination pushed another deserving title out of the running. And its win only served to swivel the spotlight away from the other contenders excelling in the field. Let's hope there's better consideration across nomination categories next year. Less Gollum gets a well-received u??pdate and snags Best Ongoing Game in 2024.

Eternally!

Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada took to the stage to give us a quick tease of Soulcalibur VI at The Game Awards ??tonight. While not much is known, the game will contain the same tale of swords and souls being eternally retold and will run on Unreal Engine 4. It will also release sometime next year on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

It's fairly vague, but From Software has officially confirmed a new? upcoming game with a short clip that played during The Game Awar??ds and a single quote: "Shadows Die Twice."

PICKLE RICK!

Accounting +, an updated version of Accounting, will be heading to PlayStation VR on December 19. Geoff Keighley took to the stage of The Game Awards to mislead people by saying we were in sto?re for a "serious and dark" game that then segued into a balloon? man saying, "FUCK YOU!" What a twist!

No price was given (it might be free like the PC version), but it won't be long before you'll be able to dive into the zany world of this game f??rom the comfort of your couch. The director behind the game, William Pugh, and Justin Roiland did mention there was a secret zoo level, so that might be where the + comes from.

Independent thought alarm

Renowned voice actor Nolan North won the award for Best Performance for his role as Nathan Drake in Uncharted 4 at the Video Game Awards on December 2, 2016. The bigger story is what he had to say during his accept??ance speech. 

Voice actors have been on strike, using the hashtag #performancematters on Twitter in attempt to emphasize the importance of their role. Nolan North, arguably the biggest name in video game voice acting, does not seem to agree despite taking part in the strike with fellow union members. In an interview with Kotaku, Mr. North says he has not experienced any of the problems that other voice actors report, "I can't speak for everyone else but I've personally never felt coerced to contin?ue a session when I'm not feeling well, and I've never been mistreated by the people I've worked for."

After thanking his wife, family, friends and several members of Naughty Dog upon receiving the award, he gave special praise to the developers including programmers and animators. In response to #performancematters, North states "It does. The performance of every designer,?? every programmer, every artist, every hard-working, talented person...That performance is so important...Their performance matters more than mine...Without their performance, my performance would not only not matter, it wouldn't exist."

I've never known much?? about North as a person, but ??it appears he is dedicated to his work and the developers that provide it, closing with the reassurance that "I will continue on if they will continue to keep bringing the things I do to life. I'll be there for them."

My Spidey sense stopped tingling

This weekend is going to be jam-packed with information on upcoming games. With the Video Game Awards (VGAs) happening tomorrow and Son?y's PlayStation Experience (PSX) taking up two days (December 3-4), ??I'm sure a lot of people were expecting to see new footage of Sony's big-budget games for next year. Sadly, that won't be happening.

Both God of War and Insomniac's Spider-Man are going to be absent from either presentation this weekend. While that is a bummer, I suppose it makes sense. If you have nothing more to show off, it is better to stay silent than to make fake footage. We don't need another Colonial Marines on our hands.

As for what we do know about the VGAs, Nintendo is going to be showing off some new footage of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Hideo Kojima will also be holding a panel at PSX for Death Stranding and recent Gears of War inductees Run the Jewels will be performing. Sounds like fun for everyone.

Announced in June and no one noticed

Remember The Game Awards, the Geoff Keighley joint production not to be confused with the train wreck that was the VGAs aka VGXs? Well last year's show must have gone well enough to warrant another this year as it was announced in June after E3 on the show's Twitter, but seemingly fell on deaf ears. 

So today when it was again tweeted out that "The Game Awards 2015 are coming this December. Stay tuned for more news soon," we actually go??t to notice it, as it wasn't lost in all the E3 news.

Since you're definitely reading this Geoff, I volunteer to co-host for free, anything to keep Joel McHale from ruining another show.

Geoff Keighley's not-affiliated-with-Spike Game Awards are tonight. Gosh, it really has been a year since he co-hosted VGX with Joel McHale. (Let ??us never speak of that agai??n.)

The show will be streamed live out of Las Vegas tonight starting at 6:00pm Pacific on places like YouTube, embedded above, and Twitch. Besides the awards themselves, there's going to be over a dozen premieres -- Metal Gear Solid V's multiplayer, for one -- and musical performances.

If the new award designed? by Weta Workshop is any indication, this is going to be an improvement over the past decade (!) of Spike award shows. Incremental change, baby.

No more Doritos and Mountain Dew

Max and I had fun last year getting drunk and making fun of the Spike "??VGX" at a slightly slower rate than its own co-host, Joel McHale, tore into it. 

Former VGX producer Geoff Keighley is now putting his weight behind a new awards show, The Game Awards, as reported by Variety. The Game Awards will take place in Las Vegas on December 5 and, given the theatre setting over VGX 2013's normcore industrial dad basement vibe, it's looking to be a slightly less...??horrifying affair. 

Tickets ??for the show go on sale November 11. You will be able to stream the show on all major consoles, and on Steam, apparently, which I didn't know was a thing you could do.

The main--well, only--draw to Spike's videoga?me award show has been reveals of new games and The Game Awards will have that thank??s to a who's-who of partnerships.

One man returns to kill everything... well mostly everything

CD Projekt RED's open-world expedition, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, is easily at the top of my most anticipated games of 2014 list (sorry Titan Fall) and the latest trailer shown off during last night's VGX show only has me even more hyped. If that is indeed possibl?e

Not too much is spoiled in the video, but?? the snippets of open-world horseback riding, the beautiful environments (such a splendid windmill), and the glimpses of heavenly animated combat are enough to begin salivating for one of the first of this new current generations RPGs. 

Now when do we get to see Geralt's, how should I put it, womani??zing ways?

Grand Theft Auto V takes Game of the Year

Another year, anoth??er VGA's... err excuse me, I mean ?VGX award show. This year's show switched up the format, but for the most part delivered the same experience.

I was only able to catch a little bit of the show, but I did enjoy watching Joel McHale pressuring Geoff Keighley into sharing one game he was actually looking forward to that wasn't part of the show. The dig about buying him more layer??s of clothing if he'd share was for sure my highlight.

'Fully re-built' for next gen consoles

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is comin????g to PS4 and Xbox One on January 28, 2014.

The Definitive Edition has been "custom built" for the next gen consoles and includes all of the original DLC, digital versions of the Dark Horse comic, a mini art book, and a developer video. Th??ose who pre-order will receive "special art book packaging featuring never-before-seen concept art."

It's a nice package for console owners who want to play Tomb Raider in its technical glory -- if you need textures at 4x native resolution or want to play in 1080p (even on the Xbox One, apparently), but it's sort of disappointing to ponder, "Is this what next gen means?" Games from last generation rebuilt to look prettier? And sold at $60 when Tomb Raider for PC, which is very pretty, is on sale on Steam right now for $10?

It's hard not to wonder if Tomb Raider not meeting sales expectations is the reason behind this release. Get some more money from the first product while working on the sequel. The sequel tha?t would have proved a much more exc?iting announcement.

Go bananas!

Meaty Nintendo executive Reggie Fils-Aime made an appearance tonight on Spike TV's VGX awards show to confirm Cranky Kong will be the fourth playable character in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

The elder statesman of the Kong clan gets around with the help of a cane, which allows him to perform a unique pogo move akin to Scrooge McDuck in DuckTales. The ??walking stick allows him to jump higher as well as traverse spiked terrain without taking damage.

Nintendo also clarified when we'll be able to get our hands on the title, announcing Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will bounce to Wii U on February 21, 2014.

Snark in the waters

Spike has announced the hosting lineup for Saturday's VGX awards show, in which Geoff Keighley will be joined by The Soup and Community star Joel McHale. 

As if it hasn't been difficult enough to take this awards program seriously. From corporate sponsored categories, to the overall trailer-to-award-presentation ratio, to the insipid "Binge Responsibly" tagline (a phrase so contradictory and unfunny at face value that I assumed it?? was a joke Max Scoville came up with), it seems hard to imagine the producers capable of creating a?? more vapid way of honoring games.

But bringing on a host whose career is literally built on of a foundation of sarcasm? That's the ch??erry. It's as if they are begging people to completely disregard any pretense toward recognizing excellence in gaming, perhaps as part of an overall strategy to eventually just have the show become a solid block of advertisements.

Tomorrow at 3:00pm Pacific marks that time of the year when a bunch of people share their opinions about Spike's game awards show on Twitter. A few of us here at Destructoid will also be partaking in a related ritual -- watching the festivities while inebriated.? If it's purely the games you're interested in, here's an interesting little development.

Steam has discounted VGX nominees, including Papers, Please ($4.99), Divekick ($4.99), Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition ($24.99), Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons ($7.49), Rayman Legends ($19.99), Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep ($6.69), and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon ($5.09). There's even an embed of t?he show's live stre??am, which suggests ... I don't know. Maybe nothing at all? It's been a while since we've had a big Valve game announcement.

Ubisoft is set to reveal new trailer at gaming award show

With the Spike VGX awards set for this Saturday, there will be number titles ready to show off new footage and even be revealed for the first time. The already confirmed titles ready to premiere new trailers are The Witcher 3, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Titanfall, Thief, and Quantum Break. And now, we can add The Division to that list as Ubisoft is?? set to reveal a new ?trailer during the broadcast.

On his Twitter page, Geoff Keighley has been letting out bits of info about the upcoming s??how. The Division made quite an impression at this past E3, and it looks like the pub??lisher is ready to build up more hype going? into 2014. 

As you can tell by the title, the award show formerly known as the VGAs will be a bit different this year. It's been scaled back, and much of the excess of the previous ??years will be toned down. The organizers claim that they listened to viewer feedback and tried something different, so it'll be much more tolerable this year. Hopefully, anyway.

Troy Baker is the new Nolan North

I wasn't so sure about the Spike VGAs being rebranded as VGX, but then I came to my senses and realized su??ch things really don't matter. Some of you will argue that the show's awards don't matter, either. At any rate, this stuff is not going anywhere.

The list of nominees is now accessible and for Game of the Year, it's between BioShock Infinite, Grand Theft Auto V, Super Mario 3D World, The Last of Us, and Tomb Raider. My guess is that? Nintendo or Naughty Dog will come out on top. Then again, Rockstar could just as easily take it.

Viewers can also vote on their most anticipated game, with the options being Destiny, Titanfall, South Park: The Stick of Truth, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Watch Dogs. That's a tough call.

Ooooh, mysterious!

The annual Spike Video Game Awards are set to take place this year, but they're undergoing a bit of a facelift. Instead of the moniker "VGAs" that we've known the awards show as for years, it's being ?rebranded as "VGX" this time 'round.

The show's producer Geoff Keighley announced the change on Twitter. He?? also mentioned that it would be broadcast on Spike again, and that everything would be going down on Saturd?ay, December 7. The last tidbit of information in his tweet was that VGX ("the VGXs?") would have an "expanded digital footprint", which sounds like something that a board room of crotchety executives would demand of their ad agency.

So, what could this mysterious X stand for? Last year was the tenth VGAs, so it's likely not ?a Roman numeral. I just hope it's not somethi??ng embarrassing like "Spike Video Game Xtreme brought to you by Mountain Dew."

Because it was easy to miss them during the show

Did you find there to be a noticeable lack of "A" in the broadcast of the 2012 Spike VGAs tonight? By my count, we had somewh??ere in the neighborhood of half a dozen actual awards given out during the two-hour presentation. A few games won in multiple categories and they saved time by sneaking a few other awards in with the one acceptance speech, while a couple more were announced during the event's red carpet pre-show.

Meanwhile, the rest of the show didn't even bother with the pretense of being ??anything more than a massive marketing effort, wit??h the scads of new trailers and so forth. Just kind of sad, really, but at least I'm not ashamed of my hobby after this year's show. That's progress.

Telltale sweeps tonight's awards

Congrats to Telltale Games for the well-deserved award for Game of the Year for The Walking Dead.

From Software is sticking with current-gen for this adventure

Despite the success of its predecessor, I was not necessarily expecting a Dark Souls II so soon, and I certainly wasn't expecting to see it get announced at the 2012 Spike VGAs of all places. Amazing! I was actually convinced the trailer was for the next Dragon Age.

Namco Bandai has made the announcement as well, confirming that this game is for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Souls series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki will serve as supervisor, while From Software's Tomohiro Shibuya will be the director. There's promise of a new hero, storyline, and world, plus "a revamped server-based multiplayer mode that will put a distinct Dark Souls II twist on the concept of playing ??with others,"?? according to the press release.

"We have taken these necessary steps with Dark Souls II in order to evolve the overall experience of the Dark Souls series," said Shibuya. "The entire development team is striving to make Dark Souls II an experie?nce that is fresh while not forsaking its roots in presenting players with challenging gameplay. Our goal is to surprise and delight our fans with new experiences and plot twists while enticing new players to join our dark journey."

May 7, 2013. That's the official release date for Naughty Dog's The Last of Us. That's one hell of a long wait, but I'm pretty sure ??it'll be worth it.
