Viral marketing sure is strange

In case you missed it, Anamanaguchi's game Capsule Silence XXIV was “leaked” by the band a few days ago a??fter what appeared to be a heated dispute with developer NHX.

The? game at first seems to be a woefully underdeveloped mess of janky textures and weird bugs, but if you dig a bit deeper, you might be surprised. A hidden level, which feels more like a complete game despite a few lingering glitches, will give curious players access to the band's new music in the form of MP3s, along with some other neat stuff like fan art and a music video for "Japan Air." There are also some inter?esting notes about viral marketing, hackers, and leaking information, so I think it's safe to assume the Twitter dispute was all just a hoax.

It's certainly a strange way to garner attention for a new game and to release a new? album. I've never heard of music being distributed primarily through a video game before. It's a unique idea, although the initial deception wa?s a bit jarring. Do you think it worked?

Capsule Silence XXIV can be downloaded for free via a link from the band's Twitter account,? which is currently completely blank save for that on?e link. Very curious...

'It was not done maliciously'

Call of Duty: Black Ops III developer Treyarch has apologised for its recent Twitter marketing campaign.

A couple of weeks ago, the studio changed the @callofduty Twitter name to 'Current Events Aggregate' and tweeted news of a live terrorist attack in Singapore.

Although neither Treyarch nor Activision have yet made a formal statement about the publicity stunt, Treyarch's Jason Blundell did acknowledge to our friends at IGN that he was "personally ??very sorry" about it.

"Here’s my view – and again, I’m a simple director and not involved in the marketing at all," Blundell said. "However, it was absolutely not done for any ki??nd of attention in any way. It was not done maliciou?sly, or as any kind of scare tactic. I personally am very sorry for anyone who looked at it and got the wrong idea because it genuinely wasn’t meant that way.

"It was done on our channel, and it was to talk about the fiction of the world. I think we were as shocked as everybody else when it st?arted blowing up, because essentially we were teeing up ready for a story beat.

"So again, very sorry for anyone who to??ok it that way. It wasn’t meant that way at all – it was supposed to just be getting ready for a campaign element."

We discovered yesterday ??that you can ju?st skip right on to the end of the game for some reason we don't understand.

Broke Twitter verified account rules

As part of a promotional stunt to promote Call of Duty: Black Ops III and reveal new information about the plot of the game, Activision yesterday tweeted out ??several reports regarding a fake ?terrorist attack that had allegedly just happened in a highly populated area of Singapore.

The tweets, which came from the official @CallOfDuty Twitter account, exp?lained that an explosion had gone off at the fictional Coalescence Corporation building in Singapore and that Singapore authorities had declared both a state of emergency and martial law within the country.

While the embedded version of the tweet above may seem like some harmless fun, those in charge of the Twitter account may be in considerable trouble due to breaking several of Twitter's rules for verified accounts. At the time that these tweets were sent out, the Twitter account had its name, bio, and design alte?red to better reflect that of a reputable news outlet upon first glance.

Once verified, Twitter accounts are not meant to change several key pieces of information on their account. While clicking on the account would still reveal that it was the Call of Duty account, the verified tick next to an account lends a lot o?f legitimacy to the content of the tweet when it appears in a users timeline.

The Call of Duty account appears to have deliberately abused the presence of ?the verified mark on their account to quickly propagate a fake account of a terrorist attack. That feels like it's in pretty bad taste as far as marketing moves go.

So, do you be??lieve creating a fake but Twitter verified news outlet to tweet about a fake terrorist attack is fair game for marketers, or a little over the ?line? I'd love to hear what people think.

Lucky it's not real, eh?

In the latest instalment of its viral promotional campaign HUNT THE TRUTH, Halo 5: Guardians developer 343 Industries has revealed "??dark" information about how the Spartan Program came to be.&nb??sp;

A (fake) interview by (fictitious) journalist Benjamin Giraud - who was at New Mombasa when the Master Chief first appeared to combat the Covenant attack - hints at a secret past that (made up) soldiers whispered about. For the details, jump to 8.20 on the latest podcast from Giraud, ?where (make-believe) informant Petrosky gives (unreal) testimony about the "dark, dark days" of ONI.

"All the families thought that they were bu??rying their kids, but really though, their little kids were now government property, kept by ONI, training to be Spartans for years," admitted (the also fictitious) Petrosky.

"And then, when they're barely teenagers, they start biologically augmenting them - which is just a fancy way of saying they tore the kids ?to pieces and rebuilt them with tech."

Well. That's not very nice, is it?

This won't be the only tease we get - particularly as we're still gearing up for E3 - but hey, I'll take anything I can get while I wait for Halo 5: Guardians' release on October 27.

Insomniac Games teases info about characters and upcoming events

The surprise reveal of Sunset Overdrive at Microsoft's E3 2013 press conference got many people excited, including much of the staff at Destructoid. As a brand-new open-world shooter set in a visually rich and colorful world, it was certainly promising to see such a unique vision for Insomniac Games' first next-gen title. Unfortunately, we haven't seen much of anything since that ??reveal last year. But now, it looks like Insomniac is opening up a bit with the convention season coming up.

A brand new viral site, along with a Twitter account, has just opened up, detailing information about the in-game energy drink, OverCharge. Plastered on the site is the OverCharge mascot Fizzie, who was seen briefly in the debut trailer. Moreover, details of the beverage manufacturer's history, along with some of the key figures of Sunset City (the game's setting) are also shown within the site. Many of the characters look to be important to the plot of Sunset Overdrive, so it'?l?l be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Founded in 2007 by Rupert F. K?ane, Fizzco produces treats and other pick-me-ups for consumers across the world. Its energy drink, OverCharge, is the corporation's best-selling product, boasting over 20 b?illion cans consumed by the masses per day. Given that the drink apparently gives its users incredible agility and special powers, this doesn't really surprise me all that much.

In addition to this, there are several planned events for gamers in the coming months. Most notably in Los Angeles on June 9, just prior to E3, and in San Diego during the week of Comic-Con. While details are still a bit light, these events will give fans a taste, literally, of what's to come in Sunset Overdrive. So if you're in t??he?? area, you may want to swing by.

With the viral site opening, and some Twitter buzz from other journalists recently, it's pretty safe to say we're going to see more of this title much sooner than we think. With E3 rapidly approaching, it's looking like Insomniac Games is ready is show off more of what Sunset Overdrive is all about.

Sony is releasing some weird videos lately. First there was this cab thing, and now we have a pirate tailor from Assassin's Creed IV.

Someone explain what it means

This video is strange. It's a cheesy advert for the PlayStation 4, posing as a cheesy advert for a Street Fighter-themed taxi service. It's pretty well packed wi?th references to the storied franchise and concludes with just the briefest glimpses ??of distorted PS4 hardware photos, the PlayStation face button symbols and a hashtag.

It's been so long since the utterly bizarre marketing surrounding the PlayStation 3 that I'd forgotten that Sony could be prone to creating ads which I am unable to comprehend. The provenance of the video remains unknown and we're left to ??ponder?? what this means about the franchise's presence on the new console and the relationship between Capcom and Sony, if anything at all.

Shall social media be her savior?

If you're at all familiar with the Hatsune Miku phenomenon, you'll know that her Japanese creators and handlers have long? been interested in marketing their virtual idol overseas, the better to let foreigners know ?of her crowdsourced joys.

From Toyota commercials to Mikunopolis, to an actual presence of her PS Vita game at E3 2012, Crypton Future ?Media and Sega have sent feeler after fe??eler. And now they've made their most overt probe yet: a Facebook campaign.

Sega's Facebook page posted the above photo, with the rather clear message: "Like and Share [this photo] if you want Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F for PS3 in the west!"

And that's pretty much it. To paraphrase the artist livetune's popular Miku song, if you want it, Tell Your World. As of this writing the photo has garne??red a shade under 3,000 likes.

On today's very special Destructoid Show, we address the rumors foatin??g around about EA's new stuff, such as Frostbite 2 powered Dragon Age multiplayer, with playable dragons, as well as the possibility of a Dead Space 3 multiplayer. In a move that is generally baffling on all sides, video game publisher Capcom, Wu-Tang Clan alumnus Method Man, and movie theatre candy Sour Patch Kids have teamed up to produce a downloadable game called World Gone Sour. Speaking of patches, Skyrim's latest patch just got a patch because dragons were flying backwards and stuff. If that wasn't weird enough, Rhythm Heaven Fever ??;is coming stateside in February. I demand Jonathan Holmes DLC.

The big thing here is that Tara got to check out Infinity Blade 2 while I was busy hacking up green stuff. She'll be uploading h??er interview video separately??, but watch today's episode for her impressions!

Well, we didn't expect that did we? When you slap an Adults Only rating on a website for a supposed multiplatform game, y?ou know you're being trolled. Funny thing is, most people expected it to be something relat??ed to America.

It turns out the trailer for Slavery: The Game was a viral for a Dutch documentary series, with a children's "Junior" edition series alon??gside it, to be aired on one of the Dutch public networks from September 18th onwards. Dutch gaming site Gamekings -- which has its own TV show on MTV over here -- interviewed one the documentary's researchers to explain what it is all about and to help raise awareness about the top?ic of slavery, which has given our small nation riches and freedom by means of exporting violence before it was cool.

If you happen to be Dutch, you probably don't know the intricacies of our slaver past since, at least when I went to school, it was never a big topic in any history classes. So you should watch that documentary! If you're not Dutch for some strange reason, carry on and wait until some indie slavery game eventually does pop up. As slavery is sa?dly something that still exists to this day, I doubt any controversy and debate surrounding the topic will fade away any time soon.

Either way, check out this interview between our national pride Boris van de Ven and researcher Lyangelo Vasquez as they discuss the viral, the topic of slavery right up to today, and the difference in reactions to the viral between regions. Hell, in the '90s this w??as all I knew about my country's involvement with sl??avery.

Square Enix has been going all out in their recent ad campaign for the upcoming Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Earlier in the summer you could see a lot of these videos on their viral marketing website for the fictional Sarif Industries, but it appears ?to have been 'hacked' by the 'Purity First' terrorist group, and we apparently missed it... by about three weeks.

I'm really impressed by the dedication that Square Enix has to the marketing of this project, and the eerie parallels to the real world are both disturbing and exciting. In addition to the video series, the Sarif Industries website has been posting links to real cybernetics developments like an artificial hand that can feel, powering cybernetics with the mind, and a bionic eye that could restore vision. The fact that this stuff really exists and these are issues that we may have to deal with in our lifetimes has me more than a little excited to see how Deus Ex: Human Revolution will handle them.

The Canadian Videogame Awards recently aired and, in amongst the hustle and bustle, a web address was shown onscreen leading to a countdown timer. The countdown at thereisnolist.ca ended last night, revealing what appeared to be an incomplete download?? code for the Xbox Marketplace. Tonight, a new update helps confirm those suspicions with a new entry referencing the PlayStation Network and another incomplete code appropriate for that online store.

These posts make references to a network protocol called "Crazy Eights" and a "Project Arkham" which may or may not be really significant. Additionally, a clickable seal in the corner of the page (which resolves to a 404 error) contained a little code around the fringe. Sleuths at alternate reality gaming forum unfiction quickly decoded it to reveal another web address, thegamertest.ca, though there is only a placeholder from registrar GoDa?ddy occupying the space at the moment.

For clues as to who might be responsible, we can look at the sponsors of the Canadian Videogame Awards. Doesn't narrow the field too much though eliminating anything Activision does remove a lot of suspects. Here's a new viral marketing video for Deus Ex: Human Revolution which features the company making mankind better through augmentations, Sarif Industries. This time, instead of just seeing these actors make use of their new c??ybernetic enhancements, we get to hear them speak in their own words as written for them by the good people at Sarif Industries.

I'm loving this part of the marketing. These are the sort of adverts I would expect to see from a company like Sarif if it existed, painting a picture of a bright future with all perfect line??s and beautiful people, while the world goes to Hell at street level. Keep this stuff coming, Square Enix, because I am eating it up.

Oh ho! The headlines just write themselves.

As you may have surmised, this third installment in Kevin Tancharoen's Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series is focused on action star Johnny Cage. Featuring an op?ening installment with the folks from The Electric Playground and a cameo by Ed Boon, see the tragic situation a young hero has found himself in and the sinister ??man offering to set him free.

I'm glad that the Sonya/Kano/Jax storyline is seemingly over for the moment and I like this episode. It's still camp (as it should be) and it's still a less than thrilling character, but I like this episode better than the first two. I expect things are going to get interesting next week, as the stor?y moves on to focus on Kitana and Mileena in episode ??4.

The second episode of Mortal Kombat: Legacy has been released and you can view it right here. It's a continuation of the events which took place in the first episode, with quite a bit of recapping ??at the outset for what has been a largely uneventful show so far. And then still not much happens.

Have you ever started a fire using friction? When you're rubbing the sticks together, there's a magical moment between the anticipation of succeeding in the task and the point at which you say, "screw i?t," and reach for the kerosene. Time stops ever so briefly while you mentally weigh the value of what you're doing and think about all the other things you could be accomplishing instead.

That's how I feel watching this episode. Obvious conclusions are being dragged out like Kano being?? res??cued by his goons and I'm about to grab a lighter. The frequent use of slow-motion probably isn't helping either. Let's move it along, Tancharoen.

With Deus Ex: Human Revolution not out until August, it seems that Eidos is looking?? to get its viral marketing campaign going early. This new advertisement featuring the fictional augmentation corporation which features heavily in the game, Sarif Industries, has cropped up.

And have you been to the company website lately? There's several pages of information about Sarif Industries and its staff, a timeline of events relating to augmentations spanning fifty years of (mostly) fictional history and product pages for a variety of augmentations. Ne?at stuff and?? just sort of thing I'm going to need to appropriately excite me for the game.

But four months out? Eidos, you're killing me.

If you're a seasoned veteran of the internet, then you may remember this Mario Kart street art done by a graffiti artist on some Portland bike lanes a few years back. Jumping on the bandwagon this year, so to speak, is Waze, a free social app that offers GPS navigation with?? turn-by-turn directions based on other users' traffic repo??rts.

This weekend, Waze is offering users a chance to win one of five Nintendo 3DS systems they're giving away by organizing what can only be described as a vehicular scavenger hunt. Starting tonight and ending tomorrow evening, you can download Waze's app on your phone and open it to find a road map scattered with mushrooms, gold coins, and stars. Follow the Mario symbol and it will lead you to the nearest Nintendo launch, where you can enter to win a 3DS. (And a bunch of other prizes, too!) If there's no Nintendo launch near you, worry not - you can enter anyway! Check out Waze's blog for the official contest rules.

Seems like a fun little way to c?elebrate one of th??e biggest launches in Nintendo's history, no?

Plus, you know, free stuff. It's win-win, really.

Above is a trailer for a game called America 2049, which has appeared completely out of the blue and is planned for release next month. As you can see, the video has no information on what kind of game it is, but does lay out some of the setting's conflict, which appears to be between a despotic governing body and plucky resistance fighters. It also features a number of actors you may have seen on popular television shows such as Lost and 24

There are also a number of websites that have cropped up as part of a viral marketing campaign. The terrorist organization mentioned in the trailer, Divided We Fall, has a site. So does The Council on American Heritage, which sounds like a intelligence organization aimed at keeping a stranglehold on freedoms (they're hiring, if you're interested). Digging further paints a picture of a world kept docile through pharmaceuticals and monitored with embedded RFID chips. So, basically a nightmare scenario for cons??piracy theorists.

Finally, an offic?ial site for the game has also appeared. As of right now, it only features a countdown clock but the wai??t isn't long. We'll almost certainly know more when that timer winds down on April 4th.

This viral video hit our inbox just now, courtesy of a "Voice of Freedom operative" who smuggled this footage of the Greater Korean Republic attack on Salt Lake City, and decided to hide it in a package. It's serious business. The operative was even able to smuggle photo records of the Occupied States of America to the?? internet. Since she had to use Korean internet, it probably went really fast.

I'm quite looking forward to playing Homefront as a non-American and comparing experiences with my U.S. colleagues. War and suffering are universal, but who knows how U.S.-centric the true perspective in Homefront will end up to be.

There's also a site which lets you see what atrocities the evil GPR forces h??ave inflicted to the occupied country. It shows how the east coa??st is literally cut off by a curtain of radiation. No details on routes through Canada though. There's all kinds of stuff, so check it out!

We've seen neither hide nor hair of the actual Fallout Online game save for a few screens that arose from the court battle between Interplay and Bethesda, but we have seen the start of some viral campaigns for ??the game. And now they're getting even wei??rder.

Members of the game's emailer received an odd little pamphlet tempting them to become members of The Church of Harold. The Church claims that "Unlike other churches out ??there, we promise nothing. But, unlike others, we back our promises up!" Mighty tempting if you're living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, I suppose.

I tell you what, Interplay. You give us an actual trailer with gameplay or even a few real screenshots and maybe a launch date for that beta you've been having people register for and then I'll start getting interested? in your viral marketing.

[Thanks, Brownjohn]

The Homefront viral continues to pummel the Destructoid HQ mailbox. This time, we were given a look at Korea's plans to poison the Mi??ssissippi River with radioactive materials. Oh noes!

The cool thing about all this was that the documents were sent to us in Korean. I was getting ready to scan all of the documents with the intent on leaving ??it up to the Internet to decipher the message when I realized that the pen that came with the envelope was abnormally large. So I took apart the pen to find a h??idden USB drive inside. Neat!

The pe??n drive contained an? English version of the document as you can see in the gallery.

Loving the viral stuff, THQ. I'm looking more and more forward to the game. Check out our interviews from E3 for more on Homefront.

Today a mysterious Dead Rising 2-themed blog appeared on the Internet under the customizing-weapon-themed name of Tape it or Die. The blog fronts itself as being written and maintained by four mysterious characters from the Dead Rising 2 world.

The blog itself follows the latest news and happening from the game show Terrors is Reality, which pits living humans against the zombie hordes for the sh*ts and giggles of the viewing audience within the Dead Rising 2 universe. The blog itself ?? already features a pretty hefty archive of posts that appear to contain some interesting information, and hints towards things that are relevant to the game itself.

Looks like I will be keeping my eyes on Tape It Or Die for the latest from Terror is Reality.

With the legal troubles behind them it seems that Interplay is back in action and actually working on Fallout Online, or they're just sending out teasers  and launching that website with beta sign ups during E3 to get everyone's hopes up. Maybe being sued for not making the game was the kick in the ass that Interplay needed because members of the Fallout Online emailer got the below images in ??the their email the other da??y.

It's not very clear what they're about, but they definitely have to do with Fallout Online. The images were introduced with the text "There are many stories an??d many more tall tales about life in the wastelands, this is one of them..." The pictures and story clearly shows that they've got a world in mind and some odd Fallout style chara?cters set-up, but the real question is when are we actually going to hear about something that is playable. Hell, a teaser trailer would be fine and dandy.

I'??m not going to lie, ??they've got me hooked once again.

Destructoid HQ gets plenty of weird, cool and sometimes stupid pieces of swag to promote whatever game that needs promoting. The latest package to be thrown at our? door (Goddamn FedEx guy ... ) came from 2K Games and this is certainly one of the cooler pieces of promo items we've received sin??ce opening up shop in San Francisco.

As you can see in the video above and by the pictures in the gallery, we got a 1950s themed briefcase filled with all sorts of documents and pictures. Everything within the case is from an F.B.I. agent named Frankie who's deep undercover with the mob in Empire Bay, the fictional city that Mafia II takes place in. There's all sorts of info that you can explore for yourselves through the official Mafia II website.

You've just been viral marketed.

Destructoid has been alerted to a fascinating new website that has captured paranormal activity on video and shared it with the masses. To all the skeptics and doubters out there, this site is proof positive that strange things walk among us. I know it's not videogame related, and totally isn't some viral marketing scam for what might be this game, but the truth of the?? Hidden People is so astonishing I had to share it.

In the above video, you'll see startling footage of a Hidden Person. The site asks who the Hidden People are, but apparently all will be? revealed on June 25. I, for one, am very interested to see where this goes. I was once a proud skeptic like my dear readers, but this stunning evidence is too compelling to ignore. ??;
