We've been seeing a lot more action from the Fallout franchise since the Amazon TV show started airing, which is not really surprising. Since the adaptation was released, Bethesda has announced the next-gen update for Fallout 4, and we're also seeing some of the games re-enter the Steam Top Seller's list; some of which are pretty high up as well.

What makes the series so beloved is its vast world and host of memorable characters, one of which is the hovering robotic butler Codsworth from the fourth game. Not just a throwaway NPC we interact with at the start, Codsworth becomes a close friend ??to the Sole Survivor once we emerge f?rom Vault 111.

His voice is very distinctive authoritative yet friendly turning him from a mindless drone into a charming, sentient being. None of that would have been possible without the tremendous work of the voice actor. If you've ever thought to yourself, "Hey, this?? person sounds pretty familiar," there's a good reason for that.

Who is Stephen Russell?

I must admit, this one ??did pass me by at first. When I first read that Stephen Russell was the voice of Codsworth, there ?was a moment of "no way! That's awesome!" It's a name I've grown up with over the decades of being a gamer. If you're not familiar with him, you will almost certainly be familiar with his work.

Russell has been voicing characters in video games since the late 1990s. I and others from an older generation will probably know him best as Garrett, the gravelly and cynical stealth protagonist from the Thief games. His disdain for authority combined with a husky delivery made Garrett one of the best stealth characters of all time (in your face, Sam Fis??her).

A black and white photo of voice actor Stephen Russell against a brick wall.
Image via stephenrussellvoice.com

Since then, Russell has become a prolific voice actor, and it would be pretty surprising if you hadn't come acro?ss his work before, especially if you're a fan of Bethesda games. Playing a thief has sort of typecast him over the years, though.

While he didn't reprise his role as Garrett for the 2014 Thief reboot, he did voice Royal Protector Corvo Attano in Dishonored 2, a series that some would describe as a spiritual successor to the Thief games. It was also interesting that the first Dishonored didn't have a voiced protagonist??. It's almost as if Arkane realized the poten?tial when developing the follow-up.

Russell also crops up a decent amount in Skyrim. Perhaps his most famous role and the one many players encounter early on is the shopkeeper Belethor in Whiterun. You know the one: "Everything's for sale, my friend. Ever?ything. If I had a sister, I'd sell her in a second." That guy. H??e also voices Mercer Frey from you guessed it the Thieves Guild.

Given his association with Bethesda, it's not surprising he's featured prominently in Fallout 4 (he's also the voice of Nick Valentine and a whole host of other characters). His role as Codswor??th may be something of a departure from his more throat??y work, but it means he really gets to show his worth as a voice actor with that most precious of resources: range.

Having also voiced some of the other Mr. Handy robots from previous games, it's a shame Russell doesn't return for the Fallout TV show. Instead, the honor of taking on the role of one of the hovering droids goes to the velvety tones of Matt Berry (The I.T. Crowd, Toast of London). To be fair, that's a pretty good shout.

If you want to know Russell's thoughts on playing Codsworth, check out this Bethesda post, where he and some of the other team discuss bringing the character to life. He also talks about his favorite "rude" name he recorded fo??r the character.

Other games he's featured in include:

  • System Shock 2
  • Neverwinter Nights
  • Dota 2
  • Fallout 76
  • Prey (the Arkane one from 2017)
  • Starfield

Honestly, as prolific voice acting goes, Russell is up there with the likes ??of Troy Baker, Nolan North, and Steve Blum. His work doesn'??t end at video games, either.

According to his website, he's also a director, producer, and playwright, with "some 200 stag?e productions to his credit." As if ?that wasn't enough, he's also a singer/songwriter who's toured places like Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, and he holds a Masters in Library Science. Wow. Way to make me feel like a talentless git, Russell!

Sound of the Streets

Capcom's Street Fighter 6, perhaps more than any other element of its makeup, brings a strong sense of personality back to the iconic, decades-old fighting franchise. And while its 18-strong launch roster is packed out with colorful design and charismatic ?personas, these World Warriors are truly brought to life thanks to the talented efforts of its (surprisingly large) voice cast.

While the following list contains many veteran SF voice actors, such as Jessica Strauss, Caitlin Glass, Peter Beckm??an, and Kyle Herbert, we also welcome names that, while perhaps new to the world of Street Fighter, are already very notable in the general field of voice acting. These includ?e Wally Wingert, Rie Kugimiya, and Allegra Clark.

Chris Pratt is fine, just... maybe not as Mario

When the news dropped that Chris Pratt was gonna voice Mario in the upcoming animation The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the reaction was ??mixed at best. The wave of skepticism only grew with the new trailer and players heard more of Pratt's work as everyone's favorite plumber.

Now many fans are pondering who else could have taken on the role of Mario, and I've taken it upon myself to put ??together a shortlist of actors who would likely have done a better job in terms of capturing the character's essence. I know that sounds kinda snobbish, especially for a character in a children's movie, but I've never let my own pretention stop me in the past.

5. John C. Reilly

John C. Reilly is known for movies like Step Brothers and Talladega Nights, but gamers probably know and love him best for his voice work as the titular Ralph in Disney's Wreck it Ralph. Maybe this one is just latching on because of that movie's video game theme, but I feel like his voice has a friendliness that would lend well to the character. I also like the idea of Mario having a deeper, raspie??r voice I feel like that fits better with his whole thing as a plumber, you know?

4. Tom Hanks

Okay, this one is a bit of a wild card, but hear me out. We all know that Hanks plays Woody in the Toy Story series, but it's easy to forget just how good he is in those movies. He's one of those mainstream actors who really seems to understand the nuance of voice??-acting roles, and I personally think he'd knock a role as Mario out of the park. There's the chance his voice is too familiar to the point that it would be distracting, but I think I'd still be on board nevertheless.

3. John DiMaggio

John DiMaggio is another modern voice-acting legend, best known for his roles as Bender in Futurama and Jake from Adventure Time. I'm sticking to my take that if this new movie is going for a Mario-as-an-everyman kind of thing, something ??with a little more "gruff" might help sell the whole thing a bit more. DiMaggio also has immaculate comedic timing, so I think he'd be able to pull off the quippy tone they're going for better than pretty much anybody on this list.

Related | The reason why Chris Pratt's Mario doe??sn't have?? an Italian accent on The Mary Sue

2. Billy West

You have absolutely heard Billy West in your lifetime, even if you don't know his name. He's voiced Bugs Bunny, Popeye, Philip K. Fry from Futurama, (as well as the Red M&M) from the commercials, just to name a few. West has some of the most incredible range of any voice actors working today, and I for one think he could bring a really fresh, interesting take to Mario as a character. No one quite understands how to make a voice performance pop like the actors who ?specialize in this field, and Billy West is one of the actors working today who understands voice acting better than anyone.

1. Charles Martinet

This one was just a given. Martinet is known as the English voice for Mario, playing the character since the series started back in 1992, as well as o??thers in the Mario universe like Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Baby Mario, and Baby Waluigi. He's nothing short of a legend beloved by Mario fans around the world.

When the announcement of Pratt's casting dropped, Martinet was the first person everyone thought of. It was a shock to fans of the series that such a prolific person in Super Mario legacy was left behind in lieu of a stunt cast, but that's Hollywood for you, I guess. He was incredibly graceful about the whole thing, as one would expect from him, and fellow voice actors like Tara Strong even spoke out in support of Martinet. It's such a dis??appointment he was overlooked for the role, but if nothing else, the backlash has drawn much more attention to his amazing talents and body of work. There's a silver lining to everything, I guess.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie premieres in U.S. theaters April 7, 2023.

She's also calling for a boycott of the game

Because we live in an era where so many of the best things in life carry more baggage than a member of the royal family going on a weekend holiday, there are now calls for a boycott of Bayonetta 3 coming from the actor who gave Cereza her voice in the English-speaking world.  As was recently reported, voice actor Jennifer Hale is taking the reins of the?? title character in this month's big Switch release.  In an interview with Game Informer, Yusuke Miyata, who is directing the series' third entry, said Hale was offered the role because "Various overlapping circumstances made it difficult for Hellena Taylo?r to reprise her role."  Today, Taylor, who was the English Bayonetta voice actress in the first two games of the series as well as Anarchy Reigns, Super Smash Bros., and Bayonetta: Bloody Fate, offered a different account of why she didn't return for the th??reequel.

In a series of social media posts, Taylor said she reauditioned for the role and was given an offer she considered "insulting."  She said she then wrote a letter to Hideki Kamiya asking for what she was worth.  According to Taylor, Kamiya responded by saying he values her contribution to the game before offering her a flat rate of $4,000 for the role, an amount that would cover the entirety of her work on the game.  Calling that amount an insult, Taylor is now asking fans to boycott Bayonetta 3 and instead take the money they would have spent o???n the game and donate it to charity.

"I understand that boycotting this game is a personal choice and there are those who won't, and that's fine," Taylor says in the second of fou?r videos she released on Saturday.  "But if you're someone who cares about people, who cares about the world around you, who cares about who gets hurt with these fi?nancial decisions, then I urge you to boycott this game."

//twitter.com/hellenataylor/stat?us/1581290543619112960?s=20&t=MecPN?qGIXmKdmsDm597aIw

Shortly after Taylor's tweets went live, Kamiya did post a short response to the allegations on Twitter, writing, "Sad and deplorable about the attitude of untruth. That's what ??all I can tell?? now."

I shouldn't make more money than the Bayonetta voice actress

While there are some questionable points made by Taylor in her posts, including suggesting the Bayonetta franchise has somehow made $450 million not including merchandise and all the religious stuff in the fourth video, the alleged offer of $4,000 seems pretty in line with what has been said about pay rates for voice actors in games and anime.  While SAG-AFTRA has made strides to help actors in these areas, it's clear its reach is still quite limited.  As an aside, following the video game voice actor strike of 2017, SAG-AFTRA came to an agreement with 11 western video game developers on a three-year contract for voice work.  That contract was extended in 2020 and is set to expire or be extende?d again ?on November 8.

It is a touchy situation because I know many people, myself included, have been looking forward to Bayonetta 3 since we first got wind of its existence at The Game Awards in 2017.  I know a lot of people are going to feel for Ms. Taylor and reject the idea her voice is worth so little but still buy the game anyway.  It's possible that PlatinumGames will offer a more concrete response on the matter than a single tweet.  I don't think I'm in a position to tell you what you should or shouldn't d?o with your money.  Go with what your heart is telling you in this situation.

Whatever people choose to do when Bayonetta 3 releases later this month, it's not difficult to see that a fundamental change in attitude is needed with how actors are treated when lending their talents to a video game or anime or any??thing of the sort.  Video games are a $100 billion industry and are the primary form of entertainment for huge swaths of the population.  As games become bigger, bolder, and more profitable, it's important that everyone contributing to their development is compensated in a just and fair manner.

A new voice for the Umbra Witch

The next entry in the Bayonetta series arrives this month. But the voice actor of the series' protagonist won't be returning for Bayonetta 3.

In an interview with Game Informer for its cover story on Bayonetta 3, Platinum Games confirms that Hellena Taylor, the voice actress of Bayonetta in t?he first two games, is not ret??urning for the third.

Fans had speculated this may be the case, but now Platinum has made it clear. Rather than ??Taylor, Bayonetta will be voi?ced by popular voice actor Jennifer Hale.

"Various overlapping circumstances made it difficult for Hellena Taylor to reprise her role," said game director Yusuke Miyata to Game Informer. "We held auditions to cast the new voice of Bayonetta and offered the?? role to Jennifer Hale, whom we felt was a good match for the character. I understand the concerns some fans have about the voice change at this point in the series, but Jennifer's performance was way beyond what we could have imagined. I'm confident that her portrayal of Bayonetta will exceed our fans' expectations."

B??ayonetta's? voice actor for the Japanese VO will still be Atsuko Tanaka.

A new voice in the fray

Jennifer Hale is well-known for her work on several different game franchises, ranging from Rivet in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Ashe in Overwatch to perhaps her most well-known role as Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect trilogy. Th?ere's little question that Platinum got someone talented to fill the shoes (gun-heels??) of Bayonetta.

Whether Hale fits as well as Taylor did for Bayonetta or not is the question. GI's coverage seems positive on the?? change, commending Hale's portrayal as being "sometimes indistinguishable" from Taylor's work in the first two games. But if you want to find out yourself, you'll have to wait until later thi?s month.

Bayonetta 3 goes live for Nintendo Switch on October 28.
