Blizzard revealed today that Warcraft 3 Reforged, the updated and remastered version of the classic RTS, is getting a big 2.0 update addressing some of the problems players have had with the Reforged version since launch. Alongside further visual updates to textures, lighting, and effects, Warcraft 3 Reforged 2.0 also comes with a much-needed revamped ranked ladder system and in-game hot key customization. Warcraft 3 Reforged 2.0 is live now and available to those who already purchased Reforged.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryZ2jiW95qo

The highly anticipated Warcraft 3 Reforged launched back in January 2020 but immediately had a rocky start with washed unit graphics that blended in with the background, major performance issues including frequent crashes, barely any actual upgrades or changes, and features that were promised in the Reforged edition missing entirely. Blizzard began issue refunds to those who requested one, and Warcraft 3 Reforged went pretty silent.

The upgrades with 2.0 are definitely a step in the right direction, and a deserved one. Warcraft 3 is still one of the best RTS of all time?, so seeing it get some ext??ra love and care is a good thing.

The Warcraft Battlechest includes Warcraft 1: Remastered, Warcraft 2: Remastered, Warcraft 3: Reforged 2.0, and the original versions of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans and Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness. It also includes some cosmetic DLC across many Blizzard games including Warcraft 3: Reforged multiplayer hero skins and a World of Warcraft Meat Wagon mount. It will run you $39.99 and is out now on Battle.net.

NetEase license ends January 2023

??Blizzard Entertainment has announced that it is preparing to suspend service for all of its gaming properties in China in 2023.

On January 23, Blizzard's agreement with Chinese holding company NetEase, which handles regional publishing duties, will expire. The two companies have been unable to negotiate new terms for a contract extension, and thus Blizzard will be taking the severe step of suspending service for all of its online titles including World of Warcraft, Warcraft III: Reforged, Hearthstone, Diablo III, Diablo: Immortal, StarCraft, Overwatch, and Heroes of the Storm.

According to an official statement by the publisher, the Chinese release of Overwatch 2, World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, and Hearthstone: March of the Lich King "will proceed later this year". Blizzard Entertainment will continue to ??see a new publishing partner in the highly lucrative market.

mei blizzard china suspend service

NetEase has handled Blizzard Entertainment's output in China since way back in 2008, so this decision is quite surprising. Additional reporting by Bloomberg suggests that the failed contract n?egotiations were not just a matter of money, but also disputes on how to handle player data and general IP management. No doubt the news will also come as a major shock to the many Chinese esports players/teams that have built their brand around? Blizzard games.

"We’re immensely grateful for the passion our Chine?se community has shown throughout the nearly 20 years we’v??e been bringing our games to China through NetEase and other partners," said Blizzard President Mike Ybarra. "Their enthusiasm and creativity inspire us, and we are looking for alternatives to bring our games back to players in the future."

You can read Activision Blizzard's official statement on the matter on the studio's website.

NetEase president Simon Zhu made his candid thoughts very clear on LinkedIn.

This one mostly fixes low-end visuals

While the core Warcraft III experience was somewhat intact, the Reforged edition of the game opened to a thud ear?li??er this year in late January.

Numerous issues were abound, most notably the unfortunate decision to morph the original Warcraft III client into the buggier and less feature-prone Reforged one. Slowly but surely Blizzard has been clawing its way back from the depths of that launch, which ??includes a new patch that just launched this week.

Titled 1.32.5, it seeks to fix a bunch of problems mostly of the aesthetic variety. Units and buildings have gotten a "color polish pass," models have been changed to add consistency and visibility and some visuals have even changed to "match Classic"; which seems to go against the entire point of Reforged, but ended up bein??g what players wanted in the end.

On the other side of the spectrum, units now have unique footprints, many portrait animations have been updated, and single-player mode for custom games is now back in, much t?o the delight of the community. You can find the full patch notes below. Progress! But there's still plenty of work to do.

Zug Zug 2020

Blizzard has had a rough several years. It needs to hunker down and completely rethink its gameplan, especially after making mistake after mistake...after mistake. For some, Warcraft III: Reforged is another blunder to add to that pile.

Warcraft III's? campaign, and the custom maps that remain, are still worth playing in some form. But the more I dug in, the more problems I found.

Warcraft III: Reforged review - Destructoid

Warcraft III: Reforged (PC [rig])
Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment
Released: January 28, 2020
MSRP: $29.99

I'll talk about what I like first so you can revel in the rest (that's what y??ou're here for!).

The Warcraft III foundation Reforged is built upon still rules. As I mentioned in my review in progress, the light Tolkien beats still shine thro?ugh and at the end of the dark tunnel, the characters are paramount. This is a character-driven game that's exemplified through the he?ro-centric system, which arguably changed the RTS game forever. I had a hell of a lot of fun experiencing it all over again in its entirety.

Getting to see Thrall be heroic and then use his actual heroic ability to trample an entire army is still a blast: campaign or otherwise. This is a game that somehow managed to empower players through both macro and micro gameplay, encouraging them to lead entire armies into battle while individually controlling a powerhouse, with personality-pushing RPG elements like items and builds sprinkled in. It's a formula that eventually inspired DOTA, and the rest was history.

This isn't even accounting for the strong core of Warcraft III's different army choices, and the bold move to include four of them: a rare and high count for an RTS, even today. You could play 100 games of Warcraft III and have all of them play out differently, depending on your build strategy and hero cho?ice. That's s??till mind-blowing to me. The new visuals help add to that allure.

I've also really enjoyed getting re-acquainted with custom maps. I'm a sucker for "Blizzard Tower Defense" [Jail TD as I call it] and "Azure Tower Defense," two official maps included with Frozen Throne. I've spent countless hours in them all over again, a??s well as numerous Line TD (that phrase just conjures instant memories for some of you, I'm sure), RPG, and MOBA creations. No joke, sometimes I'll get a kick out of just sitting and staring into the abyss of the constantly updating custom game lobby.

So there's where the trouble starts brewing: some of those custom maps are gone due to the nature of Reforged's client taking over, and the (in recent years) expanded "we own you" TOS ensuring that a future potential DOTA 2-level legal battle ends in favor of Blizzard this time around. In theory, I get why Blizzard is cracking down on "Goku battle!" anime maps on ??one end of the spec??trum: this is 2020, that stuff doesn't fly as easily as it did back in the early 2000s. The rest is up to you to decide on.

On a pure technical level, people are encountering glitches in their playthroughs, which is something I feel the need to address. If that's happening to you: good news! Blizzard is offering instant refunds. As for me, while the beta was a complete disaster (with myriad crashes and framerate drops), the 1.0 edition hasn't crashed or noticeably stuttered once on my rig. Other than some occasional unit framerate problems, nothing big has happened during my online journey and the base Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne campaig??n runs. Launching without UI scaling or custom hotkey options in 2020 was an utter mistake, though.

A lot of the above concerns really depend on taste, but one of the chief problems I have is that the remaster doesn't do nearly enough to differentiate it from the original Warcraft III. Where are all of those completely ??redone story beats that were briefly mentioned years back when the project was announced? Well, that was quietly canned a while go. It's baffling why the powers that be made this decision, when the old Blizzard would have stood firm and took their time to craft something unique that a new generation could enjoy. The official excuse is that "fan outcry" caused them to preserve the original, but this is Blizzard we're talking about: they have the resources to push the game back and include both options. Maybe one day we'll know the real story.

Warcraft III: Reforged

The old Blizzard, in fact, wouldn't have shipped the game so quickly at all. There are more sinister changes lurking below the surface, like the inexcusable choice to ruin the original Warcraft III launcher and bring it i??nto the modern era: a cardinal sin.

I frequently joke about how newer remasters and remakes never cause the originals to spontaneously combust. Well if you're playing online, Reforged actually does in this case! It blows up ladder matches and clan options: a flaw the old Blizzard would have admitted fault for and rolled back immediately. If they had left the old client to its own devices, and allowed a more robust toggle between a theoretical radically redone Reforged client and the classic game (theoretically included for free with Reforged), this release would have been better received.

I brought up "the old Blizzard" in this review because this is the first time in a while (yes, even counting Diablo III at launch) that you can really sense a huge shift at the company in just about every sense. Warcraft III: Reforged is both the beginning and end of an era. It works to a degree thanks to the immense talent of the original Warcraft III creators and c??ustom map fiends, but it doesn't quite feel like Blizzard, does it.

'We're going to continue to update the depth of the game'

Warcraft III: Reforged should have been a feel-good story for fans, but Blizzard dropped the ball – hard. It's going to take a lot of time and energy to redeem this remaster and attempt to change the narrative.

A recent patch (Version 1.32.1) brings some much-needed fixes, including one for hitching. It's a star?t.

Changes and Bug Fixes

  • Campaign
    • Players should no longer be met with a “defeat” screen after loading into a mission.
    • Audio levels for some dialogue have been adjusted.
    • The animations, triggers, and cameras for some cutscenes have been tweaked.
    • Disconnecting or logging out will no longer change the save file folder.
    • Fixed a number of issues that would block progression or not give credit for completing missions.
Developer’s note: Updating a map for these types of fixes invalidates prior saves. This is similar to how replays from prior game client versions no longer work. Campaign progress will not be lost.
  • Custom Games
    • Multiboards should no longer crash custom games.
    • Joining lobbies for the same map no longer creates duplicate versions of the map.
Developer’s note: This also resolves disconnects from improper map names.
  • Gameplay
    • The rendering of Classic mode has been updated.
    • Resolved an issue with hitching when constructing buildings or training units for the first time.
    • Fixed Ziggurat upgrade animation in Reforged mode.
    • Adjusted animations and portraits for multiple units and buildings.
    • Units completing training while off-screen again have voices.
    • Starting locations are again obscured by the fog of war.
  • Interface
    • Whispers now include the name of the sender.
    • Locale settings for audio and subtitles can now be adjusted independently in Battle .net prior to launching the game.
    • Non-Latin glyphs no longer overlap.
    • A tooltip now displays when hovering over truncated text.
    • Chat keeps up with the latest messages.
    • Heroes on the match results screen are now contained by boundaries.
    • All menus are now distinct between Classic and Reforged graphic settings.
Developer’s note: We’ve implemented a temporary solution to better inform whether you are playing in Reforged or Classic mode, by applying a sepia tone to the background images for Classic.

The update isn't nothing – it's progress! – but if you were expecting a comprehensive patch, this isn't it. For the time being, Warcraft III players will just have to hang tight while they wait for further fixes (if they h?aven't requested a refund and moved on). That said, Blizzard has heard everyone's complaints.

"Our community has come to expect really amazing things from us, and we've heard from them that we did not achieve that bar," Blizzard president J. Allen Brack told investors yesterday after an analyst raised a question about "negative press" during Activision Blizzard's Q4 2019 e?arnings call.

"We stand behind our games and have consistently shown that not only do we support them, but we continue to build on them even after launch. And we're committed to doing that here as well."

"We're going to continue to update the depth of the game," he added.

I hope they turn things around, for Warcraft III's sak?e. The game deserves better. It's an all-time great.

Zug Zug 2020

Warcraft III has aged like a fine wine.

It wasn't just the progenitor of the MOBA genre (which still exists in a thriving state), it? also rules as a standalone strategy game. Its marriage of RTS army macro-management and hero micro-management made it an? instant hit from a purely mechanical standpoint.

That's to say nothing of the aesthetic value of the fantasy setting itself, which has far evolved from the original "Orcs versus Humans" conceit. That test of time has only done Warcraft III: Reforged favors.

Warcraft III: Reforged

Warcraft III: Reforged (PC [rig])
Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment
Released: January 28, 2020
MSRP: $29.99

The very first thing I noticed when opening up Reforged and kicking off a campaign mission? That World of Warcraft influence shines through, baby! The units have a little more pep in their step, and the difference between the individual races (it's still Humans, Orcs, Night Elves and Undead) feels more pronounced. Yet, the new coat of paint resp?ects the core while adding ??????????????????????????to its legacy.

That legacy, mind, still holds up. The old cinematics, now touched-up, pop just? as much as they did years ago. While some of the overarching story is just borrowed Tolkien material, the characters are really the ones who are front and center here, and Arthas' journey from Paladin to Death Knight is just as harrowing as it was the first time around. In fact, the entire campaign, from the perspective? of all of the races, still rules.

I have to say though, I would have liked to have seen the original plan come to fruition: full-on reworks of the campaign with new dialogue and ?story beats. That idea was squashed by Blizzard (allegedly due to fan outcry), but given that the original release still exists (and is fully available to view on YouTube for free), I'm of the mind that a new ?touch from new blood wouldn't have hurt anything.

As a reminder, Reforged packs in the full campaigns from the original release and the Frozen Throne expansion, along with an expanded multiplayer component and new map creation tools (that could subsequently birth a whole new subgenre). Custom games are still a hell of a lot of fun to play through though: which is great, because they originally provided me with thousands of hours of entertainment throughout the lifetime of Warcraft III.

Some of my favorites (the original "jail" Blizzard Tower Defense and Azure Tower Defense) are already included, just like they were with the original Frozen Throne. Given that I've spent a couple hundred hours with just the former map with various friend groups, and still play it occasionally to this day, I appreciate that there's an easier way to acclimate people. But not everyone is going to love this extra $30 entry point. Yes, Reforged is basically just Warcraft III remaste?red, so if you're cool with the original, just st??ick with it.

Matchmaking is not consistent right now (classic day one Blizzard!), and a lot of online functionality has been rolled back like ladders and clan support, and standard modern features like in-game hotkey cust??omization are not in. If you're in this solel?y for competitive online play, wait until it's fixed. Some players are also reporting bugs: I haven't encountered any major issues or crashes since the last beta patch, so I can't speak to that. One aspect of the art style that didn't translate? Menus. Man, the menus need to be completely redone.

Time will tell if Reforged manages to stay relevant for another few decade??s, but fo?r now, I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Stay tuned for a full assessment as I work my way through the campaign and dip more into multiplayer.

[This review is based on a retail build of the game provided by the publisher, and roughly 50 hours of beta experience.]

3:00pm Pacific, to be exact

We don't have to wait much longer for Warcraft III: Reforged – it's launching for PC on January 28, 2020. It'll be playable through the Battle.net app, and the standard edition of the game cost??s $29.99.

In a blog post, Blizzard said it needed "a little extra development time for finishing?? touches."

This remaster of Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne has updated "characters, structures, environments, animations, and graphical effects," but here's the crazy thing: "Players will be able to do battle with anyone who plays Warcraft III, regardless of whether they're playing the original or Reforged."

There's also a new World Editor, which means tower defense, MOBAs, and oth??er custom games. As much as I'm itching to play through the whole saga again (there are seven campaigns!), I'm reminded of how much time I spent outside of the story, messing around with other players in bizarre user games.

Warcraft III holds s??uch a special place in my heart. It was my summer jam for several years in a row.

They were 1080p, compressed to 240p for the 2002 release

All too often in game development (or film, for that matter, RIP old Dr. Who episodes), you hear about "lost" archival masters. It's why I'm so into preservation: you hate to see it. Well thankfully Blizzard pretty much keeps everything, including the original cutscenes for Warcraft III, which are being brought back for the upcoming Reforged release.

Speaking to the crowd during today's Reforged Deep Dive panel, the team muses that the original cutscenes for the 2002 launch were compressed down to 240p, but were actually 1080p quality. As such, Blizzard is bringing back the original renders (enhanced) for use in Reforged "way better than you've?? ever see?n them before."

But while a lot of the game will be true to the original, the team did decide to embellish a bit on the aesthetic side. The panel specifically called out some of the more dull environments like the original Silvermoon City, stating that in Reforged, they'll have a bit more personality, drawn from inspiration like the later World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade iteration of the locale. Individual unit placeholders that were plastered on (li??ke Human Footsoldiers for elves) will be corrected.

Similarly, the "use map settings" community is getting a ton of upgrades, as multiple camera angles and more "RPG options" (like individual unit settings, as opposed to forcing stat changes on entire groups of units in the original tool) are in. To that end, there's a lot less shortcuts under the hood that will open up more unique scenarios: the team mused on how Murloc models were actually just re-tooled Undead Ghouls (nice factoid!), and how there's more freedom of expression for character models in Reforged.

When it comes to the competitive side, there will be race-based MMR, as well as separate ratings for team games, so it won't be as crazy as the old system. The team will use what they've learned from Starcraft II (which is still getting minor updates) and the more recent Starcraft remaster and apply those lessons to Reforged, so they aren't exactly building a new foundation from the ground up. There's also a "story mode" difficulty for newcome??rs if you just want to enjoy the narrative.

Warcraft III: Reforged is currently in beta form, and will be available for all BlizzCon pass holders on November 5. No re?lease window was mentioned, but the original goal was "2019," as per the BlizzCon 2018 announcement. There'??s still time!

Orcs and Humans

[Update: Blizzard ?shared during the opening ceremony at BlizzCon today that all BlizzCon pass holders will get beta access "by Tuesday."]

At last: Blizzard is starting the Warcraft III: Reforged beta. This remake is such a long time coming.

Invites for the Reforged beta will pop up "over the coming weeks," with priority going to folks who ponied up for the Spoils of War Edition. The initial beta test only includes orcs and humans with 1v1 and 2v2 matchmaking, but further in, Blizzard will add the undead, night elves, and "more game modes."

For ten extra bucks over the $30 standard edition of Warcraft III: Reforged, the Spoils of War Edition leans into cosmetic bonuses. You'll get skins for Thrall, Cenarius, Arthas, and Jaina, along with extras for other Blizzard games like a Mal’ganis pet in Diablo III and Warcraft icons and sprays in Overwatch.

I put hundreds of hours into Warcraft III back in the day, and even though competitive multiplayer was never really my thing I was all about crazy custom games I'm very ready for Reforged.

Arthas was always the Lich King!

Fans were stunned after yesterday's announcement of Warcraft III: Reforged. Not only did Blizzard remember that Warcraft was once a strategy game, but they were going much farther in updating the classic than last year's StarCraft: Remastered. This c?ould almost be considered a remake of the quality of textures a?nd cutscenes going on. That touch up is extending to a bit more than just aesthetics, though.

As reported by Polygon, Blizzard's Brian Souza and Pete Stillwell elaborated on the changes coming to Reforged in a post-presentation interview. The biggest announcement is that Reforged will be compatible with the original release of Warcraft III. Even community developed maps and mods will work with the new remaster. You won't need to buy the new? version to play online, either, though doing so will obviously net you more modern visuals.

Stillwell explained the difference between this and StarCraft: Remastered. "When we went to Korea [for StarCraft: Remastered] and talked with pros and people still playing in game rooms, the overwhelming feedback was 'Please don't change the game.'...But with [Warcraft III: Reforged], we've talked with th??e communities in Eur?ope and in China [who say], 'Hey, we don't think this game is done.'"

To that end, Blizzard will be introducing a wide range of balance tweaks and even expanding on the options available in the game's editor. In a move that will likely be controversial, Blizzard is also working with writer Christie Golden (famous for her Warcraft novels) to tweak aspects of Warcraft III's story to fall in line with established World of Warcraft lore.

This move is being done to give, "renewed focus to a few central characters that we thought deserved a little bit more time in the limelight," as Stillwell puts it. Stillwell then mentions characters like Jaina and Sylvanas, whose roles in the original campaign were pretty thin. He even brought up the Murloc creatures, which were basically a reskinned enemy before becoming an entire race in World of Warcraft.

"A lot of stuff in Warcraft III was just kind of put in as 'Hey, isn't this awesome? This is cool,' Stillwell recounted. "Like the Murlocs for instance. One of the artists back in the day, he came in over the weeke?nd because he felt that there needed to be more creeps on the maps ?... so he just retextured what the ghoul was and he made a Murloc."

Along with that, some of the landscapes in Warcraft III will feature more defined architecture to better capture what World of Warcraft has on offer. The biggest can be seen in the trailer for?? "The Culling" mission, which features a Stratholme more in line with the popular MMO than the original. Stillwell mentions, s??pecifically, that Stratholme originally had Greek columns and a small river that didn't make a whole lot of sense for the village.

Whether or not these changes are what you want is another matter. I'm not sure how I feel about rewriting entire bits of lore, seeing as how World of Warcraft was built off of Warcraft III and not the reverse. I guess it would be interesting to see that backstory become more fleshed out, but n??othing in WoW directly contradicts the RTS classic. This just seems like a bit of meddling to better justify the "Reforged" moniker.

At the same time, the classic Warcraft III isn't going anywhere. Reforged is based on that and while balance updates will make their way to the original, players will still be able to access that version in all its 2002 glory. You can already boot it up in HD thanks to a patch from earlier this year, so it isn't like Blizzard is demanding you move ?over to the new version.

All in all, I'm not quite sure what to make of this. I'm still pretty excited since I love Warcraft III. Those tweaks might get out ?of hand, though, and that wouldn't be good.

Return of the (Lich) King

Warcraft III Reforged was just announced at BlizzCon and it set the?? arena on fire. The game will be heading to PCs in 2019 while a demo is now available on ??the BlizzCon floor. The demo will feature the "Culling" mission, which is arguably the highlight of the entire campaign.

As for the main package, it will contain the original Reign of Chaos game alongside the excellent Frozen Throne expansion. It will feature fully remade character models with support for up to 4K rendering. All of the textures and cinematics will be ?redone to bring them up to current standards (though I sti?ll think the original looks great).

The remaster will be launching for $29.99 while a "Spoils of War" edition will go for $39.99 and contain a bunch of extras. These will include things like a "Meat Wagon" mount in World of Warcraft, a special card back in Hearthstone, and four heroes in Heroes of the Storm. Other goodies?? will be announced at a later date.

You can pre-order the game from Blizzard's website right now.
