Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 may have been released back in September, but it shows no indication of slowing the flow of content. Keeping near-constant communication with players, the teams behind the game recently shared what would be in store for players in the near future. That includes a new weapon to play with and some more general balance changes to weapons overall. Aside from the preview, Space Marine 2's developer, Saber Interactive, took some time to respond to frequent?? player sug?gestions the studio has already received.

Space Marine 2 outlined its plans for live service even before it was released, promising additional content, new weapons, and more cosmetic options. So far, the title has made good on those promises, first adding a sparring arena and ??taking care of some quality-of-life fixes before turning to a more substantive new Operation. While there was a brief period of community upset after some nerfs, the team quickly pivoted to retract the changes and announced test servers to avoid similar mistakes in the future. With the most recent communication about the game, players have even more context about where Space Marine 2 will go next.

The Neo-Volkite Pistol is inbound

In an October Community Update, the Space Marine 2 team formally introduced players to the Neo-Volkite Pistol. This weapon will be available as a Secondary option for Assault, Bulwark, and Vanguard players. The Neo-Volkite Pistol looks like a ray gun in action, emitting a super-heated orange beam to melt through foes. The team described the weapon, saying, "The Neo-Volkite Pistol is a thermal weapon with accumulative damage. Its heat rays have a deadly impact on organic matter, incinerating flesh into ash with explosive force and jets of flame. A weapon of choice against Tyranids!" Alongside the Neo-Volkite Pistol, the team promise?d that other firearms would also ??see some buffs, though more specifics weren't given.

Volkite technology in the Warhammer 40,000 ??universe is old, dating well back before the Horus Heresy, during the Age of Strife. The weaponry used to be pretty commonplace, but a combination of its complexity to produce and barbarity when used on organics led to the weapons eventually falling out of favor. It was primarily replaced by Bolt weaponry, and by the 41st millennium, original Volkite weaponry is exceedingly rare. That said, the Neo-Volkite Pistol is the first attempt to br??ing the devastating weapon into the franchise's modern age.

The October communication simply noted that the Neo-Volkite Pistol and the other firearms buff would arrive soon. However, the team then detailed that Dar??k Angel cosmetics would arrive afterward in an update targeted for early December. With that info in tow, it stands to reason that players will be getting their hands on the Neo-Volkite Pistol and retuned weapons somet??ime this month.

Saber Interactive responds to player suggestions

Aside from the exciting news that players will soon have a new toy to play with, the Community Update also puts some focus on the community. Namely, it listed some of the frequent questions or suggestions the team receives about Space Marine 2 and set to answer them. The first suggestion tackled was players' constant ask for more melee weapons. Saber responded by acknowledging that new melee weapons would indeed be nice and that it's something the studio will consider when the time is right. That said, the work is time and resource-intensive, so it's n??ot currently planned.

More campaign missions were the next ask from fans, which is no surprise considering the stellar outing already within the base game of Space Marine 2. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like this is a priority for Saber ?Interactive. Responding to the suggestion, the studio noted, "We're currently not?? thinking about adding new campaign missions in Space Marine 2. We rather focus on creating new Operations and Eternal War content."

PvP players have been clamoring for more options, specifically for larger party si?zes. Saber notes that it's actively working on customer PvP lobbies that will support tinkering with features like Class limit, score, tim?e, and more. Also on the side of multiplayer, fans have asked for some kind of incentive for queuing up for quickmatch. The studio responded that it was already considering it for a future update.

Due ?to lore and IP preservation concerns, Saber Interaction is unwilling to make PvP's Chaos-driven Heretic Astartes available in PvE Operations. On the bright side, the team has heard players' desire to experience the game's prologue again. While Saber notes that it's not a priority, it may add a way to replay the opening.

Customization is its own game

In addition to tackling players' questions about the game itself, the Community Update had a whole section dedicated to responding to queries about Space Marine 2's customization options. Leading the discussion was an update about colored lens options for helmets. The minor details are incredibly important to the Warhammer 40K community, so Saber reports that the fe??ature is ready to be deployed alongside the upcoming Dark Angels Chapter Pack.

The studio also confirmed a few other customization tweaks are in development, including skin color customization. Deathwatch iconography will also be able to be placed on the right shoulder, eventually. Lieutenant helmet customization is coming, and Saber notes that it wants to make helmet customization a more robust feature but that it will take some time over the life of Space Marine 2. Generally? speaking, the studio also noted that it wants to continue to add more customization options, l??ikely as DLC.

Outside of what Saber has been able to confirm is either being worked on or considered, there are a few things that the studio ??notes might be outside the expected scope of post-launch support. Namely, adding more customization slots isn't something Saber intends to work on, as the team would rather build out more impactful features. Players have also called for the option to recolor and customize cloth and taba??rds. While it's something Saber might consider later on, the work required to produce a worthwhile version of the feature would impede the development of existing plans.

The Warhammer 40,000 universe is full of heroic factions like the Ultramarines and terrifying alien threats like the Tyranids, but that's only a fraction of the whole picture. As seen featured in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, the Tho??usand Sons are a group of Chaos-corrupted Space Marines with a penchant for magic and the occult. However, the Thousand Sons are more than just evil wizard marines. Their past is marked by tragedy and the fickle hands of fate, truly showing that the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Undoubtedly, one of the most significant and influential forces in the Warhammer 40K universe is Chaos. It manifests in various forms, from daemons summoned through ritual to heretic Adeptus Mechanicus members creating diabolical homunculi of steel and flesh. However, the most iconic representation of C?haos is the heretic Astartes. Each warband can trace its lineage back to one of the traitor Legions from the Horus Heresy civil war, and most have willingly surrendered to the ruinous powers, seeking a share of their dark might.

The Thousand Sons were one of the Legions marked as traitors during the Horus Heresy, but it's not as cut and dry as the other heretics. While there is?? no excusing the vicious actions of ?the group in the lore's current standing, for quite a while, the Thousand Sons were acting in the best interest of the Imperium.

A tragic past

Like all Adeptus Astartes, the Thousand Sons started out as loyal members of the Imperium. Their Primarch, a demi-god genetically cloned from the Emperor, Magnus, grew up on the Psyker world of Prospero, where he sharpened his already potent psychic abilities. He soon surpassed all his teachers and set about advancing civilization on Prospero, making Warp? study a primary focus.

Magnus was repeatedly warned about the perils of the Warp and the entities that dwelt within, both from his teachers and the Emperor after the two were reunited. Despi?te this, Magnus frequently projected his psyche into the immaterium to scour its depths. Following the ??Primarch and Emperor's reunion, the Space Marines that would become known as the Thousand Sons were Magnus' to command. Like him, each bore a natural gift for Psyker arts and a fascination with the Warp. However, his genes proved unstable when applied to his sons.

T?he Space Marines tended to become afflicted with something known as the "flesh change," which would see them mutate into mindless abominations. While some called for the Legion's disbandment and destruction, Magnus pleaded for the chance ??to save his sons. Eventually, after many attempts to plumb the Warp for a cure, Magnus seemingly found what he was looking for. The Primarch saved those he could, leaving only around a thousand of his Legion unaffected, earning the Space Marines the name the Thousand Sons.

The Council of Nikaea

While the Thousand Sons proved as effective as a??ny other Astartes Legion, the other Primarchs and their sons looked on with dread. As the Imperium pushed further into the galaxy, it encountered vile alien species that used Warp magic, much like the Thousand Sons. Psychic abilities became taboo, and Magnus' Legion was perceived as skirting too close to those ruinous powers. The issue culminated in what became known as the Council of Nikaea, where the Emperor called a meeting between all Primarchs and other trusted advisors. The righteousness of Ps??ykers would be put on trial.

Though Magnus did have some voices in his corner, the events at Nikaea did not go in his favor. Except for Navigators and Astropaths, needed for space travel, the Emperor decreed? that Psykers were not permitted to practice. Magnus begrudgingly accepted his father's ruling, but it wouldn't be long before he'd break his promise. The Primarch would foresee the Horus Heresy and all the ruin it would bring. Desperate to warn his father as quickly as possible, Magnus used astral projection to traverse the Warp and reach the Emperor directly.

Just before reaching Terra, Magnus found his path barred by some kind of seal. At this time,? a voice reached out to him in the Warp, promising to help the Primarch overcome the barrier. Seeing no other option, Magnus accepted the help and crashed through the obstacle right into the Emperor's throne room. The Emperor put the seal in place to keep daemonic forces from reaching Terra, and now they were invading through the hole Magnus had created. The events also destroyed the Emperor's Webway project, which would have allowed huma?nity to discontinue its use of Warp travel.

Prospero falls, Chaos rises

When Magnus returned to his physical body, the mysterious voice revealed itself as Tzeentch, the Chaos god of change and sorcery. The entity ?told Magnus that he and his sons were destined to serve Chaos, one way or another. Meanwhile, the Emperor ordered the Space Wolves and their Primarch, Leman Russ, to bring Magnus and the Thousand Sons back to Terra to answer for their crimes. This order was intercepted by the now-corrupt Horus and was changed to s??ee the Space Wolves decimate Prospero and the Thousand Sons.

Magnus fully realized that he had become a pawn to Chaos and opted for inaction. He believed that any further struggle would play right into the hands of Chaos, and he was ready to allow his Legion and himself to fall for his folly. However, after watching the destruction start to unfold and believing that he had been in the right trying to warn his father, he took to th?e field to deny his Legion's execution. That ultimately led to a confrontation between brothers as Leman Russ ?and Magnus faced each other in battle.

Russ eventually overpowered Magnus and, in one swift blow, broke th??e sorcerer Primarch's back over his knee. Completely without hope, Magnus heard the voice of Tzeentch again. It offered to save him and his remaining sons if he swore allegiance to the dark power. Seeing no alterative to save his sons, Magnus agreed. The Primarch and the Thousand Sons were transported to a world within the Eye of Terror known as the Planet of the Sorcerors.

The Rubric of Ahriman

After the events of the Horus Heresy played out, the Thousand Sons would be part of another Legion-defining event. Though the Thousand Sons were now sworn to Chaos, the Legion's rampant mutations returned. Azhek Ahriman, Magnus' trusted advisor, was unwavering in trying to find a cure. In secret, he for?med a cabal of sorcerors hoping to unlock the secret to ridding the Legion of its mutations, but it ultimately backfired.

Ahriman completed a ritual that saw the "flesh change" cured, but it ravaged those in the Legion without a strong psychic connection. Sorcerors were unharmed, but everyone else was reduced to little more than dust sealed in power armor. The Space Marines were still alive? in some sense, but only their souls remained under the armor to power the new automaton. Needless to say, Magnus was furious when he realized what Ahriman had done to his sons. 

Though?? the Primarch wanted to kill Ahriman, Tzeentch intervined and noted that the sorcerer was still valuable for further??ing Chaos' will. To that end, Magnus let Ahriman live but sentenced him and any of his collaborators to exile.

Sorcerous tactics

Being Chaos Space Marines with a history steeped in the occult, it should be no surprise that the Thousand Sons favor psychic abilities and magic. The heretics are just as comfortable summoning daemons to do their ??bidding as they use Warp-infused weaponry. That's not to say that they don't use similar gear and weaponry as other Astartes factions, but some kind of psychic might almost always supports them.

Like ??their patron Chaos god, the Thousand Sons enjoy twisting schemes and meticulous planning. That could come in the form of an attack planned at precisely the right time, as certain celestial bodies align, or a long game of corruption for unsuspecting Imperium citizens. The Legion's goals can often be obs?cure or seemingly irrelevant until a later revelation announces true intentions.

While the Thousand Sons' fall from grace was tragic, there is no redeeming the Legion now. It has committed itself to the dark forces of the Warp and as an enemy of the Imperium. And while the Thousa??nd Sons carry out countless ?acts of heresy and damnation, Magnus still contemplates his hatred for the father he believes betrayed him.

There are many factions warring across the Warhammer 40K galaxy, each? sticking their necks out for what they believe in. With room for only one faction comi??ng out on top, which faction is likely to win in the current setting?

It's important to remember that Warhammer 40K lore is still being written, and unless Games Workshop are desperate, the story will never come to a true end. We are likely to see years of back and forth between the factions and new exciting?? battles wage and leaders fall ??and get resurrected.

Whilst the franchise is making money, it??'s like??ly never to end.

That being said, if there had to be a??n end - which faction is most likely to win?

What is each Warhammer 40K faction's goal?

To understand which armies will win in Warhammer 40K, we first must understand what it is they're all after. Winning ??doesn't necessarily mean surviving, as their goa?l could be something different to the eradication of the other factions.

Despite there being lots of armies to play from, they can be collected into bigger factions? that share the same purpose.

In the Warhammer 40K theatre, you've got the following players:

  • Imperium of Man (this encompases the Astra Militarum, the Adeptus Astartes, Adeptus Mechanicus, and so on. Any human army) - this faction is fighting for survival and to purge the galaxy of aliens, mutants, and daemons.
  • Forces of Chaos (despite the Chaos Gods not being buddies, they don't really engage in wars with each other so to defeat their common enemy: the Imperium) - this faction is fighting to destroy the false Emperor of Mankind and to make The Warp conquer the Universe, claiming it for the Chaos Gods.
  • The Aeldari (Eldar) - this faction is one of the oldest, and is trying to bring themselves back to prominence in the galaxy like they once had. Additionally, they are trying to kill the Chaos God Slaanesh, who they brought into existence.
  • The Drukhari (Dark Eldar) - this faction revels in pain and suffering, and their only goal is to continue their hedonistic piratical lifestyle by surviving whatever the galaxy throws at them.
  • The T'au Empire - this faction is a collection of alien races whose goal is to expand their empire for the "Greater Good" of the T'au Empire and its people. It's unclear what enough looks like for the T'au, but the "Greater Good" may only be achieved with T'au Empire domination.
  • The Orks - this violent and barbaric faction is only concerned with fighting. As long as they've got a good fight lined up, they're happy. All an Ork plans to do with their life is to keep fighting.
  • The Tyranids - these voracious insectoids' only goal is to keep eating. Like an ant infestation on a cosmic scale, their hive fleets go from planet to planet for the Tyranids to consume all of the biomass before moving on. They live to feast.
  • Genestealer Cults - this faction's only goal is to worship and help the Tyranids consume the galaxy. They will infiltrate and take over planets to signal the closest hive fleet over to consume the planet - and themselves.
  • The Necrons - these ancient beings have woken up after eons of slumber to reclaim a silent galaxy, only to see it bustling with life. Their goal now is to march forth and destroy all living things as they did at the dawn of creation.
  • Leagues of Votann - this is a smaller faction that strives to expand their territory after much was destroyed after the Warp. They engage in trading expeditions to gain the resources needed to relocate and grow. They don't wish to control the galaxy, just to be big enough for its people to thrive.

From the end goals of these factions, you can li??kely tell which ones are a little more threatening than the others.

To make this discussion fair, I will be considering each faction's end goal to see i?f they'd hit their personal goals before seeing which factions will "win" by outlasting all the ?others, or at least the madness of the current setting.

To know how Warhammer 40K w?ill likely end to determine who would "win,"? we'll need to have a look at the most threatening factions - and know what makes them so dangerous.

The most threatening Warhammer 40K factions

Almost all of the Warhammer 40K factions are pretty balanced with each other. They each have their own challenges and forces they need to constantly deal with??, and they each have their own trump card that th??ey've either almost actualised, or have already.

It's difficult to say which faction will dominate the others, but it's very easy to see which Warhammer 40K factions are looking to be th?e most threatening right now. And to little surp??rise, it's not the League of Votann.

The Orks

The Orks are an interesti?ng case. They span across the galaxy like a rash, and although they almost always get beaten back by the Imperium, they are always somehow hitting important locations and overrunning worlds in their mighty WAAAGH!s when left unchecked.

They are numero?us and strong, but a concentrat??ed effort will almost always repel them. And yet they're all over the galaxy raising hell. Destroying all in their wake, decimating planets, and thanks to their fungal biology, they are never in short supply.

You could massacre? a hundred Orks, and their orkoid fungus would grow a hundred more.

The biggest pain in the back side of the galax??y, the Orks aren't threatening because they're the strongest (although an Ork would tell you that they are the strongest (and the biggest)), but because they are constantly attacking everything all the time. As though a persistent leak, they'll wear the galaxy down eventually.

Relentless and restless, no one is ever safe from the reach of the Orks, no matter ??who you are.

The Tyranids

The most pressing threat at the moment, the Tyranids (and by extension the Genestealer Cults) are consuming whole planets all the time with their gargantuan hive fleets that are dining through the galaxy. As they consume biomass, the??y get stronger, and there are numerous hive fleets at work.

What's worse, is that ?it's been hinted that the present hive fleets are merely scout ships for an even larger armada.

All of the galaxy is in fear of these insatiable and mindless creatures. Even if the Tyranids lose one battle, they likely would??n't have suffered a net loss of biomass, allowing them to press on and keep consuming.

They are many, and they are devouri??ng all in their wake.

The Necrons

The Necrons were key players in the War in Heaven, and still h??????????????????????????ave access to their incredible powerful and?? ancient technology that went toe-to-toe with divine beings. Although the Godly C'tan have been rendered to shards now, having such great power is an asset to any army.

What makes the Necrons really threatening, however, is that they are composed of living metal and can "resurrect." Dam?aged Necrons can teleport back to base to undergo repairs, meaning a Necron never really dies.

Stalwart and fearless, the deathless Necrons managed to genocide th??e galaxy before, and they have the means to do so again. Any engagement with these foul beings are typically ??left with catastrophic casualties.

The Imperium of Man

That's right, the "good guys" of th??e 41st millenium?? are a threatening power as they're almost too big to fail. Considering just how long the Imperium has been going on for, if it were to collapse due to internal struggles, it would have already. It spans across so much of the galaxy that the amount of failsafes it has renders it almost immune to internal collapse.

So many leagues of armies and super soldiers make the ranks of the Imperium a force to be reckoned with. I mean, it did take Abaddon the Despoiler 13 crusades to take down Cadia - just one planet.

The endl??ess war machine of the Imperium is a match for divine beings and savage aliens, and their ranks know no bounds. Their endless loyalty allow mortal men to stare into the eyes of a literal daemon, and pull their triggers.

Such brav??ery and loyalty has allowed this faction to face off against incredible odds and win, making them truly formidable.

So, who wins in Warhammer 40K?

Now that we know what each faction is fighting for, and the most prominent players in the game, we can go over the likely scenarios that would lead to an end of Warhammer 40K if we consider the current setting.

Firstly, let's just get out the way that the Orks are already winning. They always have been, since the day their ancestors were made by the Old Ones. Even if they die out due to a stronger fa??ction, they'd still have won. All they want t?o do is fight, and they will fight to the end.

Factions like the Eldar, ??the Leagues of Votann, the T'au Empire, and the Drukhari, will likely not be able to establish their goals before a greater power consumes or defeats them. Although the Eldar are powerful, the level ?of prominence they desire will take far too long to properly achieve, and they just aren't strong enough compared to the other forces at play.

The Chaos are technically always winning, yet are destined ??to lose. Spreading turmoil and madness and is what the Chaos Gods enjoy, and whilst the Imperium is alive, they get to keep doing that, so they win with each person tortured, converted, and killed. However, killing the Emperor of Mankind is likely beyond the?m.

If they all banded together they could likely topple the Imperium, however, they all hate each other. Constant disorder and backstabbing happens within the ranks of the Chaos forces on nu?merous levels, always keeping the military forces a step behind of what they could actually be.

Whilst the Chaos Gods are divided, they will never crush the Imperium, although their day to day activities of sowing ??terr?or and reaping violence allows them and their followers to keep revelling in joy - effectively winning every day.

So, what a surprise! The most threatening factions are likely to be the o??nes to survive the madness and achieve their goals. It isn't so cut and dry, however.

Naturally, the Tyranids have pretty ??good grounds to eat the galaxy, as it looks like there is no stopping them, and the Imperium scarcely scores wins against the?? indomitable waves of gnashing teeth.

However, the Necrons a?ren't made from biomass. Any Tyranid and Necron engagement is extremely costly for the Tyranids, and the fearlessness of the Necrons allow them to stand and fight. Funnily enough, the galaxy's only stand against the Tyranids are the Necrons. And it gets better.

With the return of the Silent King, who laments the fate of the deathless Necrons, there is hope against the Tyranids. He has embarked on a journey to wake the other Tomb Worlds to unite a force against the Tyranids specifically. If he's successful, which he likely will be, he'll manage to wage a deva??stating war that would end in the demise of the Tyranids. Or at the very least, chase them away from this galaxy.

So whether any other faction exists hinge?s on this Necron vs Tyranid battle. ??Will the Silent King manage to muster his forces and beat back the hive fleets before they devour everything? And what happens after?

Although the Necrons' goal is generally to reclaim the galaxy, the Silent King w?ishes only to destroy the Tyranids before the younger races feed them too much. He also wishes to revert the metallic forms of his people. Unlike other petty Necron dynasties, the Silent King does not wish for a galactic genocide, and so whether the Necrons win is down to the Silent King reinserting himself as ruler of the Necrons as he once was.

If the Imperium were to survive the Tyranid crusade, then it would go back to business as usual. They'd likely be the faction that came out of the crusade stronger compared to their peers,?? and would be able to exterminate all the aliens, mutants, and heretics much easier. I doubt the act of the Necrons, or the Nectontyr if they're reverted back, would change humanity's stance on them.

I also doubt that the Imperium would be able to full??y actualize their goal of eliminating all alien life and destroying every single heretic, although they'd make great headway into it. So the Imperium wouldn't lose, exactly, but their true winning goal is a pipe dream at best. Although surviving what's to come and still being a prominent power could be considered a win.

At the end o??f it all, I believe only a few factions will come out "winning."

The Orks, thanks to their endless lust for violence ??wh??ether they survive or perish.

The Necrons, but only if the Silent King successfully leads over ?them once again.

The Cha??os followers whose only purpose is to spread madness, death, and torture in their limited ??lifetime.

I believe the other factions wouldn't die out completely in the end, although they'd be so decimated that they've essentially lost, with their goals being put to bed. The only possible exception to this is the Imperium, who would most likely survive the Tyranid apocalypse and come out stronger than the others would. It's hard to tell whether they'd win in a mat??ch-up against the Necrons, however.

Chaos wouldn't be destroyed, and may run amok in the dev??astated universe. However, thei?r dividedness will never allow them to actually achieve total victory and dominion.

And there we have it, the most likely "winners" of the current Warhammer 40K setting if it were to end right now. Do remember that the writers will keep finding new ways for the conflict to continue, with the factions never really winning, but never re?ally losing.

I hope your prefered team is one of the ones set to "win," but if you're a League of ??Votann player, then you already knew what the answer w?ould be.

I have analyzed and viewed discussions surrounding each of these space marine chapters in Warhammer 40K to rank them all accordingly. This list goes from best to worst, starting w??ith the more competitive chapters to the ones that people will only really choose because they look cool.

Remember that winning battles isn't the only reason to play Warhammer 40K, so don't let this list dictate your choice when wanting to build a new space marine army. The "rule of cool" is definitely important to ensure you don't get bored of a chapter whilst ma?king them.

With that being said, let's jump into the strongest Warhammer 40K space marine chapters and the weakest.

Space Wolves

Starting with one of the best space marine chapters in Warhammer 40K right now, may I present the Space Wolves.

Not only do they look incredibly cool and are essentially space vikings, they consistently have a competitive win percenta???ge. They are incredibly powerful and adept at charging and melee. The Space Wolves benefit from the biggest range of unique units, with some marines riding giant wolves into battle.

With so much choice when building up your army, you'll be able to come prepared for any combat encounter, as long as your response is to charge, rip, and tear your wa??y through their ranks.

Space marines are hardy enough, but being able to charg??e into combat to hack up squishier foes while being able to blast regular devastating space marine armaments into strong??er targets is what makes the Space Wolves as formidable as the are.

The Space Wolves are also one of the be??st factions to paint, considering their diversity an?d interesting color scheme.

If you're at a loss for which space marine chapter to make, you can't go wrong with the Space Wo??lves.

Grey Knights

The Grey Knights are a more mystical chapter of space marines that work with the Inquisition to hunt down demons and heresy. Despite their trickier playstyle, the Grey Knights are proving to be a fantastic force in Warhammer 40K 10th Edition.

They can utilise their psyker powers to telep?ort around the battlefield, being able to surprise and take on their foes. Their magical abilities are a huge asset that, when used correctly, can turn the tides of battle. It may not be wise to pick the Grey Knights when starting out as you'll want some experience and familiarity with the systems.

A smaller army size allows you to mobilise your army earlier to press the advantage, however, this comes at a cost of staying power shou??ld your opponent be skilled enough to DPS you out of the game. Stay vigilant and mobile, and you'l??l be able to win most of your games.

If you're up for the task, you'll be able to utilise th?e stre?ngths of the Grey Knights to emaciate your enemies.

Deathwatch

The Deathwatch are an incredibly powerful and versatile chapter th?at, like the Grey Knights, aren't a standard chapter. Composed from the elite soldiers from other chapters, the Deathwatch are made from the best of the?? best.

They are a diverse team that plays very distinctly from other s??pace marine chapters. As their lore backs up, the?se guys are effective at killing xenos. This does, however, provide limits. As when you're against xenos or non-xenos options, a portion of your stratagems will become useless.

This isn't?? too big a set-back, however, Dreadnaughts and veteran soldiers that make u??p the ranks are efficient in all manner of killing.

Unlike other chapters, the Deathwat??ch can use Combat Doctrines in any order they wish, allowing for liberating flexibility and responsiveness that other chapte?rs can't afford.

The Deathwatch are a versatile and veteran chapter, s??o it's no wonder they're so high ?on this list.

Ultramarines

You'll either love the space marines because they're aw?esome or you'll hate them because they're popular. However, it turns out that the Ultramarines are a mixed bag (albeit it a powerful one) when it comes to tabletop play.

Ultramarines are the ultimate generalists that are prepared for everything any enemy could throw at them. This comes at the cost of specialization, however. Where some chapters are good at specific things which make them great co??unters for some enemies, the Ultramarines can't push hard in any one specific combat direction.

Although they aren't the most powerful or the fastest, their lack of speciali??zation means lack of a weakness. This also extends to combat-focused enemies, as they can fall back, shoot, and can even charge back into melee.

The Ultramarines are always ready to fight, and they have v?ery? little weakness for an enemy to exploit them out of a match.

Salamanders

Salamanders are the enigmatically altruistic space marines that are no less lethal on the?? field. With their buff to flamers, the Sala??manders prove incredibly fun to play on the tabletop and they have good defensive capabilities to make up for the lack of ranged shooting.

Naturally, you'll need ??to plan accordingly if you are to field an army of Salamanders, however, with the right strategies you'll be able to rip your enemies to shreds at medium range. They are also ideal generalists, although not as general as the Ultramarines. This makes them capable in most combat situations.

The Salamanders may not make for the most powerful space marines, but they have incredible potential when played right. Against certain match-ups, their lack of long range fir??e power will catch up with them, however.

Black Templars

The Black Templars are one of my favorite chapters in the game, and are?? one of the most powerful chapters to field. Thanks to their zealous and crusader-y attitudes?, the Black Templars prove to be a quick and punishing chapter that can charge the heretics and smash them to pieces.

A melee focused chapter, the Black Templars are able to perform very well in close-quarters combat, although that can become a liability in certain combat situations. Especially?? as they aren't the most specialized force to stay shooting at th??eir enemies.

Also, this chapter is incredibly untrusting of psykers, which means they ca??n't field them. This isn't a huge se??tback, as the Black Templars are more than happy to make up for the lack of psykers with their pure willpower.

Dark Angels

The Dark Angels are a strong space marine chapter that has fallen on hard times in 10th Edition. But that doesn't mean they are??n't powerful if played accordingly.

This chapter has a great array of unique units to play with,?? although note that they won't be carrying your army. You'll need the sup??port from the myriad other Dark Angel units for the most effectiveness. It seems that this chapter can excel in any field of combat, so long as they do it together.

It doesn't help that the Dark Angel roster is rather elite-heavy, meaning you'll need to be caref?ul with how you play? your special troops as there won't be a lot of cannon fodder to protect them.

The Dark Angels are awesome, just pay heed to their slight letdowns and you'll be able to dominate with the??m.

Iron Hands

The Iron Hands used to be a meta force, but now they're reduced simply to a "very viable" space marine chapter in Warhammer 40K.

These powe?rhouses are very formidable in?? combat, with great buffs to defense and their vehicles, allowing for their offense to be even sweeter. Which also is something they're very good at.

The only thing the Iron Hands fall back on is that they rely on the first turn, thanks to the Devastator Doctrine, to be as incredibly effective as it can be. Without spending? command points, lots of the abilities will be wasted.

Without the Devastator Doctrine, however, the Ir?on Hands make for powerf??ul adversaries.

Imperial Fists

The Imperial Fists make for incredi??ble walls of fire that will stop almost anything in their tracks. However, they also have some downsides that? stop them from being even more powerful.

These stalwart living defenses do perform exceptionally well against vehicles and buildings - but the only thing is - buildings are scarcely used in Warhammer 40K. A?nd even if they are, any oth?er chapter will be just as capable of taking them down.

Also, they share a book with the Crimson F??ists, dramatically reducing their options. The Devastator Doctrin?e also makes their first turn incredibly important, which could ruin things if it doesn't perform very well.

Despite those gripes, th?e Imperial Fists are naturally very resilient and can outlast many opponents.

Raven Guard

The Raven Guard are good candidates for harassing your opponent and getting in their grill, but they don't have much else going for them??.

They are a capable bunch, but w??ith no stand-out features and competitive edge, at least when compared to the chapters higher on this list. Do note that they have some great stratagems, but you'll need more than that to score higher on this list.

White Scars

The White Scars are the token fast ones in the Adeptus Astartes. With h??uge emphasis on their fast vehicles and melee combat, you've got yourself the barbaric Mongol Empire in?? space.

The White Scars are brutal in close-quarters combat, with doctrines to help them ??get there quicker. Even without their vehicles, they're able to advance and charge, making them a threat to any unsupported enemy units.

The one thing that holds the White Scars from being placed higher is their lack of shooting and resi??lience support, making them a little more fragile than other ch??apters. Sure, you hit hard and fast, but when you're relying on that for victory, it can be exploited.

Blood Angels

The Blood Angels aren't a bad chapter by any means, it's just that they don't have too much going for them in terms of strategic versatility. No matter? how you build your army, ??your tactics will revolve mostly around running in as fast as you can and engaging in bloody melee.

This will work fine against most opponents, but if they have experience, they can hard-counter you pretty quickly with t??he right strategies, especially if they knew who they're facing ahead of time.

Blood Angels do have a lot of powerful and unique ch??aracters, but they're a?? little one-dimensional.

Crimson Fists

There isn't much to say about the poor Crimson Fists. Although they're decent at throwing out lots of shots?, this doesn't make them stand out more than any other chapter's strengths.

The anti-horde nature of the Crimson Fists may make sense, but it doesn't compare to the other chapters in Warhammer 40K. Sharing a book with the Imperial Fists, they have fewer traits and relics to use (although they have more stratagems than the Imperia??l Fists). They also have no unique figures.

The first turn for the Crimson Fists is incredibly ??important thanks to their Devastator Doctrine?, like the Imperial Fists, which is more of a curse than a blessing. This liability will screw you over more than help you.

There are much str??onger chapters out there than the Crimson Fists, I'm afraid.

The Eisenhorn Omnibus, by Dan Abnett, is a collection of the four novels and four short stories about Gregor Eisenhorn ?- Inquisitor of Ordo Xenos.

This series is incredibly renown in the Warhammer 40K reading community and is almost a must-read for any newcomers. The Eisenhorn Omnibus is a detective story and an interplanetary epic, encompassing everything that could be en??joyed out of a Warhammer 40K product.

The Eisenhorn Omnibus is a large saga compressed into one huge book, so you'd better hav??e you?r best chair to sit in whilst reading.

Fabius Bile Omnibus

The Fabius Bile Omnibus, by Josh Reynolds, is a collection of three novels and three short stories that tell the tw??isted tale of Fabius Bile, a traitor and master genetic manipulator.

This omnibus is home to insidious tales and gruesome creatures - most of which are creations ?by Fabius Bile himself. Ironically, his? quest for perfection leads him to sculpt monstrosities across the galaxy, from the Eye of Terror to the Dark City of Commorragh.

Yet again, the Fabius Bile Omnibus is an incredibly long story, so try to make yourself c??omfortable when reading the malicious stories within.

Ciaphas Cain: Hero of the Imperium

Ciaphas Cain: Hero of the Imperium, is a collection of the first ?three Ciaphas Cain stories to get you started with this plucky and sarcastic commissar.

A great shift in tone from all the other grimdark entries in this list, the Ciaphas Cain novels have a lighter, more action-p?acked tone than other Warhammer 40K stories. Due to the nature of these hilarious yet true-to-theme stories, many fans have recommended this series. And where better to start than at the beggining.

Sandy Mitchell is still writing Ciaphas Cain stories, so ??there is plenty more greatness to come from our favorite commissar?.

Night Lords Omnibus

The Night Lords Omnibus is a collection of the three Night L??ords stories by Aaron Dembsku-Bowden. In this thrilling story, you'll follow the trai??tor legion of the dreaded Night Lords as they seek revenge for the death of their primarch, Konrad Curze.

In their constant battling and stalking, a struggling warband must face off against the countless Imperium forces, as well as the f??orces of Aeldari from Craftworld Ulthwe. Their journey takes them to site of their greatest defeat, where they must fight against impossible odds.

You must steel yourself if you are to venture a??longside the Night Lords.

Helsreach

Helsreach, an entry into the Space Marine Battles serie??s wr??itten by Aaron Dembski-Bowden, follows the battle for Armageddon. The Space Marines against the Orks is a battle as old as time, although this story is still thrilling and exciting.

You'll follow the Black Templars as they d??efend Hive He?lsreach from the Orks. Naturally, this will lead into a final stand with the fervent templars against the growing green horde.

If you enjoy Warhammer 40K for the epic battles, then Helsreach will certainly give you one.

Death of Integrity

Another entry into the Space Marine Battles series, Death of Integrity, by Guy Haley, takes a br?utal space hulk as?? its stage.

Two Space Marine chapters, the Blood Drinkers and the Novamarines, face off against thousand of Genestealer cultists in the Death of Integ??rity space hulk. However, the Adeptus Mechanicus send them on a secretive mission that sends them into the heart of the ship.

If you're interested ?in seeing one of the very few times Genestealers are written about, then Death of Integrity will be a great read.

The Twice-Dead King: Ruin

The Twice-Dead King: Ruin, by Nate Crowley, tells the story of Necron politics, pride, and revenge. All that is typically ??told about the necrons is that they're mindless robotic zombies. However, the lords do retain some of their mental faculties, allowing for ambition and bitterness.

Necron Lord Oltyx was stripped of his title as heir to the Ith??akas dynasty and exiled to a forgotten planet to wage an endless war against the Orks. Despite his dwindling garrison, Oltyx wishes for revenge against those who betrayed him. But a whole other horror is soon revealed to him.

For a greater insight into the Necrons, as well as a great story, The Twice-Dead King: Ruin is waiting for you.

Requiem Infernal

Requiem Infernal, by Peter Fehervari, tells a dark story that follows a tucked away order of the Adepta Sororitas?? (Sis?ters of Battle) that have dedicated themselves to understanding their founder's twisted visions.

?However, on their secluded doors soon come an Astra Militarum company reeling from conflict with an unknown xenos power, heralded by a Sister Hospitaler who turned her back on the order long ago.

For a mysterious and twisted plot following one of the coolest Imperium forces in Warhammer 40K, Requiem Infernal will provide.

The Infinite and The Divine

The Infinite and The Divine, by Robert Rath, tells the millenia-long story of two polarizing Necron leaders: Tra?zyn the Infinite and Orikan the Diviner.

In this colossal tale, Trazyn, a historical collector, and Orikan, a Chronomancer who can manipulate the future, have a feud that shapes the galaxy, ends civilizations, and changes each ??other. Despite their conflict, they ultimately dictate the future of the Necrons.

For a spanning story of Necron might and power, The Infinite and The Divine is surprisingly concise.

Ravenor: The Omnibus

Ravenor: The Omnibus, by Dan Abnett, is a trilogy of stories that tell the tale of another inquisitor, I?nquisitor Gideon Ravenor.

Investigating a Chaos conspiracy, Ravenor and his followers are taken to extreme peril as they try to shut down the spread of evil.? As they journey through space (and even time!), Ravenor and co. never let up their secret war against the demonic forces of Chaos.

Both Ravenor's greatest successes and failures will be on display for you to get lost in with Ravenor: The Omnibus.

Warhammer is going from strength to strength, with a TV adaptation starring Henry Cavill in the works and millions diving deep into the creative, tactical hobby on the daily. Well, if you’re in the crossover section of Warhammer fans who also love cute things, you’re in luck.

On June 21, Warhammer revealed the next set of plushes which will be available to purchase later on in the year. These are in addition to the three currently available from Tomy, bring??ing the total of adorable little monsters to seven. 

And oh boy are these little monsters adorable indeed. There really is something for everyone, no matter which army you choose to br??ing to the tabletop. Let’s take a look at all ?seven, with a comparison between model and plush for each.

Little Unclean One

The plush version of the Great Unclean One is f?ar cuter than the model version, but the model version is one I have a huge soft spot for, as I poured so many hours of my time painting one who I dubbed ‘Bettyâ€?

Modeled after the countless Grots in any Ork army, the Spanna Grot comes equipped with his very own adjustable wrench, ready to charge into battle and bash some heads??. I can imagine him hanging off the side of an equally squishy Boomdakka Snazzwagon, yelling obscenities.

Gnasha Squig

Listen, I have a huge soft spot for Squigs of all shapes and sizes, having painted countless for my Gloomspite Gitz army. While my own were an assortment of rainbow colors, this plush Gnasha Squig comes in the standard red, complet?e with a sin?gle horn and floppy tongue. 

Tyranid Ripper

My first Tyranid army was painted in Hive Fleet Leviathan colors, so I’m incredibly excited that this Ripper is of that theme. Rippers might be the cutest of all Tyranids, I mean let?'s face it, these bugs aren’t about to win any beauty pageants, but they’re about as deadly as they come. Fortunately, the plush version is more cuddly than killer. 

Watcher in the Dark

The model for the Watcher in the Dark comes as part ?of the Dark Angels army and is a very tiny, incredibly annoying to paint, little thing. The plush version is also small, though you can see his power armor boots poking out from his robes. He also comes holding a MkVI helmet, though I donâ€??™t want to know where he got it from. 

Nurgling

I make no secret of it - this is my favorite Warhammer plush to ever exist, I love it, and it will b??e joining my collection as soon as it releases later on in the year. Nurglings appear in huge numbers across the entire Nurgle army, but this one is modeled after one Nurgling in particular, which comes as part of the kit to build a Plague Marine Champion. It’s so sassy, I can imagine it putting me in my place.

Sun of Shyish

Available: Later in 2024

I’ve never gotten around to painting my Malign Sorcery set, but it’s been on my to do li??st for years. Now, even if I never get around to painting my Sun of Shyish, at least I’ll be able to hug one. While you’re free to paint your own any color you choose, and I’ve seen a lot of really really badass looking paint jobs ov?er the years, the plush version comes in the standard purple coloration.

Servo Skull

Servo Skulls are fashi?oned from the former skulls of adepts, who obviously no longer have a need of them for one reason or another, so that they can continue to serve the Emperor of Mankind after death. Thankfully, the plush variety Servo Skull is far cuter and much more unlikely to try and kill you as you sleep.

Players can find the latest releases on the official Warhammer webstore. Shortly after, the codexes can be found on Amazon from Games Workshop themselves or from other tabletop gaming stores. G?ames Workshop and other vendors frequently run sales on Amazon, so it's recommended to check there before purchasing codexes from the official store (which always lists items at full price).

What are Warhammer 40k codex books? 

Warhammer 40k 10th Edition launched with a set of index rules, available for free on the Warhammer Community website. These ru??les allow every army to be playable but are lackin?g the depth and identity that codexes provide. The index rules can be seen as the outline for every army, while the codex could be considered the color and details that complete the picture. 

Army codexes are a comprehensive source s??pecific to each faction; containing everything from lore, rules, and datasheets that form the backbone of playing each army. The identity of armies truly shines once their codex is released since thematic elements that influence the playstyle are included such as:

  • Updated or additional strategems
  • Psychic powers
  • Detachments
  • Special traits for warlords
  • Additional special army rules

When a codex is released, it??s rules and stats become the standard, rendering those within the index obsolete. 

Warhammer 40k codex codes and how to use them

On the back of each Warhammer 40k 10th Edition codex, you’ll find a unique code that can be registered on MyWarhammer. Doing this unlocks access to convenient online and in-app datasheets and detachment info for that codex’s respective faction within the Warhammer 40k app. This allows for? easy army list building within the updated Battle Forge tool that surpasses traditional pen and paper methods.

It's not too late to sign up for the closed beta

After being pushed back to a late November release, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is gearing up for a closed beta test on PC that will be playable from October 14�6 through Steam and the Microsoft Store. Say no more? Just bounce over to the beta sign-up page, add your email address, and fill out a questionnair??e t??o determine your eligibility.

According to Fatshark, the beta test will "throw everything but the kitchen sink at you to keep you at bay." This versio?n has "more content and features" than the prior Tech Test.

That said, you won't get to experience everything planned for the full release of Warhammer 40,000: Darktide �the developers are "limiting? weapons, maps and missions, enemy types, and other systems." And the progress you make in these beta sessions won't carry forward, as balance tweaks are likely to come up, leading to wipes.

If you're fine just watching from the sidelines and waiting for the full game, expect to see new footage soon. Per the FAQ, content creators are allowed to strea??m this one.

Carrying the fun co-op action spirit forward from Warhammer: Vermintide means that I'm already on board with Darktide. It's the next ste??p I would've wanted, and it doesn't need to convince me. The main question is, what kind of character am I going to create?

While the beta test will be limited to PC, Darktide will also be launching on Xbox Series X/S. The PC version is up first (on November 30), with consoles following suit (date TBA).

$40 is the right price

If you haven't heard, Fatshark locked in the price: the standard edition is a budget-friendly $40, and there's an Imperial Edition for $60. The latter includes cosmetic bonuses like a Caducades backpack for human characters, eight weapon skins, four class outfits, and also 2,500 Aquilas (the game's premium currency). You can scope those out on Steam.

In my thirties, I've really moved away from PvP in favor of PvE, which I find less stressful overall. ("Less.") I'm glad games like Darktide are getting the green light.

The (other) Game Awards

And so the sun se??ts on another Gamescom �and it seems that this year's event was something of a successful comeback. Making a grand return to Germany's Koelnmesse complex, the first physical Gamescom in over two years saw players, press, and publishers gather together to show off and/or experience some of the top titles currently working their way toward an eager gaming public.

While some, this author included, found the Opening Night Live stream a tad underwhelming, there was a large selection of interesting games and projects showcased both online and on the show floor over the course of the week-long event. As is tradition, a jury of Gamescom's peers and employees has put together an awards list, shining t?he spotlight on a selection of titles showcased during the event that stood out to the panel as being particularly promising, impressive releases.

Now, of course, we don't need to put too much weight on this list. It is, after all, an honors list of Gamescom games as decided by Gamescom. But it's still interesting to see which of the 100+ games in attendance this week have been selected as featuring some special promise, and it may help them find their way onto your own personal radar. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing more of Lies of P.

PC will get it in November, while Xbox owners will wait a while longer

Co-op first-person horde game Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is taking a little extra time for development. Developer Fatshark announced today that the PC version has been pushed to Novem?ber 30, while Xbox Series X|S will arrive later.

Previously set to arrive in September, the multiplayer PvE game is now splitting out its console and PC launches. In a statement, Fatshark says the Xbox vers??ion will arrive "shortly after" PC, with a specific date to be announced.

Fatshark also says that delaying a game is a difficult decision. But it's also one the team hopes shows its commitment to making Darktide come together.

"While we have been humbled by the great feedback on the game so far, w?e also need more time to improve?? stability, performance, and to mature key systems," the studio says. "Each is critical to making sure we have the best possible experience for you, the players."

Squad-based test fire

If you're still eager to get in, there will be a chance before November 30. The team will be hosting a series of technical tests ahead of launch, in order to kick the tires on Warhammer 40K: Darktide.

The playtest sign-up page is live on Fatshark's site here, and appears to have sign-ups open for both Xbox and PC. Seems like a decent way to get in e??arly if you can't wait to fight the Chaos horde.

Fatshark has built a pretty solid reputation with its work on the Vermintide series, creating some stellar co-op PvE games over the years. Safe to say, Darktide has some lofty heights to reach. So a little extra time for the st?udio to buckle down and work on fine-tuning things to be just right soun?ds good for the whole squad.

Four scoundrels band together to survive 40K

During today's annual Warhammer festival Skulls, developer Fatshark premiered a new trailer for its upcoming co-op action game Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. It looks grim, dark, and grimy. Pretty much what'd you expect in a Warhammer 40K setting.

As humanity struggles to fight back against the tides of Chaos, criminals are rounded up and sent into the fray. These Inquisition forces are basically the Suicide Squad in 40K. But you and three friends will need to touch down on the ??planet and try to?? survive.

Fatshark garnered a reputation for solid co-op action with its work on Warhammer: Vermintide. Rather than a dark fantasy setting, Darktide leaps ahead into the future of Warhammer 40,000. The nice part is while there are guns to wield, there are still plenty of big weapons to swing too. There is even some magic to wield, depending on what class? you pick.

Blood for the God Emperor

Pre-orders went live today for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. The co-op game is expected to go live on Sept. 13 for PC and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Two different versions are available: the basic runs $39.99 and has a few launch cosmetics, while the $59.99 Imperial Edition has premium currency, uni?que class outfits, and more.

We've already seen some gameplay of Darktide and it looks pretty dark. It is the world of Warhammer 40K, after all. No matter what planet you land on or faction you belong to, it seems like a generally rough universe to get by in. Still, the thieves and scoundrels of Warhammer 40,000: Darktide ??will try to keep on and stay alive in the face ??of Chaos.

The new trailer was among several big announcements today at the Warhammer Skulls festival. A new video looked behind the scenes of the upcoming Space Marine 2, and a few different Warhammer projects got announced. I'm personally a big fan of Boltgun.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide hits PC and Xbox Series X|S on Sept. 13. It's also due to arrive on Game Pass.
