Find the game in the pile

It's that time of year again. The Steam Summer Sale 2022 is live ri?ght now, with some deep discounts on? dozens upon dozens of games.

From now un?til July 7 at 10 a.m. PT, developers and publishers are putting their games on various levels of sales.

And of course, there is a side-game as well. One section brings up a message from time-traveler Clorthax, who has "stolen the ten best games from the far future" and brought them back to sel?l on Steam.

It's essentially a scavenger hunt, it seems, with clues and hints for finding a game. It's a neat lit?tle side-venture to engage with across the days of deals.

The Steam Summer Sale deals

Of course, there are the deals and ?discounts themselves. There is a massive amount of sales, too many to fit into one text block. So I've taken a cursory stroll through the sections and picked out a few notable ones that caught my eye:

You can find the Steam Summer Sale live here on the store's home page.

Grab it from the Epic Games Store by June 9

Oh hey, Wolfenstein: The New Order is free. It's up for grabs on the Epic Games Store this week, and you've got until Thursday, June 9 to claim this (worth playing!) PC game.

It's something that many of us have already played by now thanks to years and years of deals, but I'm sure some of you re??ading this haven't tried it yet?, and I'd nudge you in that direction. I'm trying to put myself back in that 2014 headspace right now.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwjKMjIE1rs

I remember being surprised by how much I enjoyed the story though, at the time, I was admittedly coming in for the FPS action, not necessarily the narrative. You can't help but root for B.J. Blazkowicz every step of the way, and Wolfenstein: The New Order feels really personal. You're out to brutalize every Nazi you see, naturally, but there are hard-hitting themes and genuine character moments in the mix, too. MachineGames swung for the fences, and it paid off; The New Order showed up in Game of the Year discussions.

With that said, even if you lack a soft spot for the Wolfenstein series (or have n??o personal history with it whatsoever), you can absolutely have a good time with this game.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus was an increasingly out-there sequel, and not all of its zanier moments landed, but I still mostly dug the game and would be super on board for a (hopefully more well-rounded) Wolfenstein III. Yes, Indiana Jones is cool too. But come on!

Next week's free game is a mystery

Fans will be playing the waiting game for a while, it seems. At least next week, the Epic Games Store will be back with another free mystery game on Thursday, June 9.

Let us count the ways

Coming off of E3 this year, I started to notice something. Every time I logged on to Steam or PSN somebody I knew was playing Wolfenstein: The New Order. Every single time. Who could blame them?

After all, Bethesda had just shown off the Nazi killing, acid-fueled trailer for Machine Games second swing at the franchise, Wolfenstein: The New Colossus. It seems a whole lot of people walked away from E3 2017 with the same notion. Carter gave it a 7.5 and the improved expansion an 8.5. Sure, not a perfect score, but a good score for a story-heavy shooter lacking any multiplayer. That 2014 Wolfenstein game was pr??etty damn good. I should play tha??t again.

Confession time: I never finished it. I couldn't help but wonder, "what stopped me"? For the past few days, I've been working my way through The New Order over on my Twitch channel. Boy, does that game hold up.

This video showcases the insane violence and dark sense of humor that makes this game such a gem

Games like Team Fortress 2 have kept a thriving community after all these years, despite new and improved multiplayer games like Overwatch coming along. Games like BioShock (on??e of my personal favorites) could only get better with age, yet the HD collection for that particular series, released only one year ago sits in the shrink wrap on my bookcase. It's important not to forget games as time passes.

How does Wolfenstein hold up though? Like I said, pretty damn good. It still looks great, running at 60 FPS on the right hardware, shooting feels tight, and it's ?just plain fun. Nothing beats mowing down a group of mechanized Nazi's while duel wielding two massive machine guns.

I still feel like I've yet to address the most important question here, why didn't I finish this game the first time around? It wasn't a lack of interest, though I do remember dropping off around the level set in the sewers beneath Berlin. Underwater levels rear their ugly head, but on my second playthrough, I couldn't help but notice the redeeming qualities in that section. While spending most of your time traveling thro?ugh mundane sewage tunnels, you're treated to audio diaries recounting Anya's cousin's time seducing and murdering Nazi soldiers.

I also may have lost a few months of my life to a little game called Destiny shortly after picking this game up in 2014.

There's value in replaying games. I only wish there were enough hours in the day to go back to them all. The resurgence in popularity of a series like Wolfenstein can't help but make you smile. If you have the time, there has never been a better time to pick up Wolfenstein again. You've got time to get it off your backlog, as Wolfenstein: the New Colossus releases on October 27.

It's insane to think that in 2017, two of the games I'm most looking forward to are Wolfenstein and Quake. How about you?

Thank you. They can happen. Drive

Wolfenstein: The New Order is the first game in the series to be officially released in Germany, and to make that happen developer Machine Games had to do a little self-censorship ??????????????????????????on their Nazi killing simulator. The main change is anything referring to Nazis. Instead the bad guys are referred to as "The Regime."

Eurogamer took a detailed look at all the changes Germ??an gamers can expect, from all the emblem replacements to the ?way characters speak about their enemies. Thankfully, the brutal violence was left intact. Look at them Nazi heads exploding.

BJ is back

Along with Catacomb, Wolfenstein was o?ne of my first FPS games. One of the fondest memories I have of my father is playing it "co-operatively," where one of us moved and the other shot enemies and opened doors.

It was one of the purest FPS games of all time, in an era where maps were more of an elaborate maze than a hallway of cutscenes. While Wolfenstein may play it safe with many modern designs that we've al??l come to expect??, it manages to encapsulate the spirit of the genre when it was in its infancy -- fun.

Wolfenstein: The New Order (PC, PS3, PS4 [reviewed], Xbox 360, Xbox One)
Developer: MachineGames
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
Release Date: May 20, 2014
MSRP: $59.99

While the premise may not be as wildly different as Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, The New Order tries something different this time. Taking place a few years after the events of 2009's Wolfenstein, Order once again follows the footsteps of American hero Captain "B.J." Blazkowicz as he attempts to topple the Nazi r??egime during World War II. There's just o?ne major problem -- he fails in the prologue chapter, the Nazis win the war, and the US surrenders.

Blazkowicz is rendered unconscious, and as a result of an encounter with General Wilhelm "Deathshead" Strasse, he is stuck in a mental institution for 14 years suffering from brain damage. Oh, and the Nazis have giant robots now in this alternate 1960s universe. Yeah, this is one messed up future. For those who aren't aware, The New Order is a single-player only game, which is probably for the best knowing how half-assed developers handle multiplay??er these days.

While the story isn't exactly Oscar-worthy material, the genuine surprise that ?Blazkowicz's voice actor exhibits when he finds out that the US actually surrendered to Germany sounds authentic, and it sets the tone for the eerie landscape to come. The developers really went all the way with this concept, and it does wonders for?? essentially rebooting the franchise without rendering all the previous stories moot.

But Blazkowicz isn't a thinker -- he's a doer -- and you'll get off to killin' Nazis in no time. To do this, he'll utilize a number of different playstyles (stealth, tactical, assault, and demolition) all with upgradeable perks in tow. The cool thing about this system is that players can opt to go for all or none of the skill trees, and they don't have to switch between them because every upgrade is permanently unlocked once you earn them?.

By looking at the perk ??menu you'll be able to spot different challenges (kill five enemies undetected, or achieve 10 headshots), which will unlock perks like throwing knives and stronger headshot damage, respectively. I generally preferred the stealth element, as the throwing knives were particularly ??fun, and sneaking around isn't nearly as slow as it is in other games.

If all hell breaks loose I opt for assault weapons, most notably guns with dual-wielding options. The only real annoyance with this "choose your own perks to upgrade" mechanic is that you can't "pin" goals anywhere on the UI -- you have to go back to the menu every time and pause to action to find out your requirements. Thankfully, it does all?ow pretty much every playstyle to flourish, and completionists will have a great time mastering everything.

The New Order is also old-school at times, chiefly? because it employs the classic multi-weapon system that's eschewed so often these days for a simplistic two-gun loadout. There's a weapon wheel that allows you to switch from everything to rocket launchers to silenced pistols to dual assault rifles, and if you want you can use the weapon switch button to quickly swap between two of your favorites -- opting for the best of both worlds.

The health system isn't entirely retro as there is some form of regenerative health, but it's severel??y limited and medkits are still a thing. Starting with a maximum health of 100, your life regenerates in multiples of 20, so if you have 80 health you'll have to find a kit to get back to 100. It's challenging enough as every hit will bring you that much further from a maximum of 100, and the later difficulties can get pretty brutal.

Another refreshing feature I found is that The New Order doesn't hold your hand at every turn. We've become so conditioned to blindly follow bread crumb trails no further than inches from our faces, and only press buttons outside of the confines of the game in QTE-like situations. But thankfully the objective reti?cles are kept to a minimum, you're expected to improvise in certain situations, and maps must be filled out by hunting down and killing special "Commander" NPCs throughout each level.

The maps are a good mix of multiple paths and linear hallways, although they tend to err on the side of the latter far too often. It's not nearly as open as say, the new Rise of the Triad or even older Wolfenstein games, as you'll usually know where to go, or where secrets are hidden. You'll also get to make a major choice at the start of the game that will influence your skills and t??he storyline ever so slightly, but the differences are marginal.

New Order's main ingredient is simplicity, which can feel a bit grating ??at times as you ostensibly repeat the same actions over and over. After you've unlocked a fair bit of abilities and have s??een most of the enemies it can feel like a grind at times -- a feeling that is alleviated the more you enjoy FPS games in general. The tesla packs and iron soldiers are a neat concept, but the more you play it the less developer MachineGames does with the occasionally mundane reality.

If you're looking for more after the roughly 10-hour campaign, you'll want to hunt for every collectible, unlock all the concept art, and search for the elusive "Enigma Codes." The codes are basically the ultimate secret in The New Order consisting of 18 individual pieces for each of ?the four codes. If you can find them all?? and solve the numerical puzzle in the extras menu you'll unlock additional modes, which are mainly just modified difficulty levels.

In many ways, Wolfenstein: The New Order is "First-Person Shooters: The Game," but it gets most of the important details right. It's still weird to me seeing Wolf games developed over and over? by new devs, b??ut MachineGames did a great job adapting the franchise in its own way. With a few tweaks, the next iteration could be something truly special.

I will not apologize for the following wordplay

Wolfenstein: The New Order’s new trailer is out, and the good folks at Bethesda play the same segment twice for our amusement: the first, a little like Hitman, and the second time, like Serious Sam. From the moment I started watching I was super pumped as an uni?dentified old man, who I will affectionately refer to as Grampy, kicked off the action by shooting a Nazi bastard in the face. Ludicrous gibs!

Silencers, knives, and sniper rifles will assist players who wish to be stealthy in picking off Nazis one at a time. Multiple entry points to objectives seems to point to a much more strategic and tactical design then I had anticipated. It’s a far cry from Modern Warfare in some of those segments, but not so much that it should receive a medal of honor just yet. This is truly the path for soldiers of fortune.

Of course, if you’re a traditionalist, you can go in with guns blazing and commence Operation: Bodycount. Oh, what a selection you have at your fingertips! Pistols, assault rifles, automatic shotguns, grenades, and more abound. From the trailer it seems as all these weapons are capable of being dual??-wielded, perhaps sacrificing the ability to use sights for raw destructive capability. Also, Nazis! I still really want to give this game a whirl.

Deck yourself out in some sweet new hats for buying early

Wolfenstein: The New Order is up for pre-order on Steam, and while my finger is hovering over the mouse to pull the trigger and make it Steam official, here's an interesting tidbit that might sway you into giving it a chance as well: free Team Fortress 2 hats!

Unfortunately, there's no details on what these hats actually look like. I can only imagine that they're not actually Nazi paraphernalia, but probably gas masks or something equally grungy. Valve's been tight-lipped about it so far, but hey, anything free is acceptable. Gving away those sweet pins from the last E3 would? have also been a great pre-order incentive, but I dig??ress.

Additionally, don't forget about the big reason to pre-order: the freakin' game beta for (BFG 2014) Doom. You can only get your ticket in if you pre-order Wolfenstein: The New Order for PC, PS4, or Xbox One, releasing May 20, 2014. I think hats (and awesome fake German tunes) are a good reason to take ??the plunge. Ha??ve I mentioned how much I love World War II-inspired shooters?

Gentlemen! Ve are Nazis und ve vill have var!

I've got kind of a thing for Wolfenstein 3D, since it was one of the first PC games I ever played, but also World War II and alternate histories in general. So excuse me while I indulge in some inappropriate levels of excitement about "Nowhere to Run," the latest Wolfenstein: The New Order trailer.

The trailer opens with Martha and the Vandellas' "Nowhere to Run," doing the whole juxtaposition of cheery pop song against dark imagery (Halloween II did this so well with "Knights in White Satin," for real) and a soccer player getting shot in the face. Nazis hate soccer, and anything fun. More so than Nazi evilness, this trailer showcases some explosive future weaponry, as well as some nefarious Nazi experiments, which I want to see more of, a la Frankenstein's Army. Also, mechs. Delicious mechs.

B.J. Blazkowicz is in rare form. 'Cause no one can make him die. No one can make him cry. But you can buy Wolfenstein: The New Order on May 20 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Coincidentally, my birthday is May 18. And you might think this game is worth a dollar, but I think it'll play like a millionaire. Plus, it's spawned some pretty swanky '60s-styled tunes

$100 package now available to order

Bethesda announced today that pre-orders are available for the "Panzerhund Edition" of Wolfenstein: The New Order, a limited-edition package which includes an 8" articulated statue of the Panzerhund enemy, documents, patches, a steelbook case and all sorts of other stuff. You know what you don't get for your $100? A copy of Wolfenstein: The New Order to play.

The "Panzerhund Edition" is a misnomer. You can't call it an "Edition" if the central product you're offering isn't in the package. This is a collection of Wolfenstein memorabilia to accompany the release of a ??product, with a hefty price tag.

Bethesda, for what it's worth, does make the absence of the game very explicit on the item's order page, advising customers to, "Keep your pre-order at your favorite retailer and we'll send? you these goodies separately -- this way we can ship these boxes worldwide and you're not stuck waiting for your game to come along with an oversized, expensively shipped box."

I have a better suggestio?n: Don't buy this at all. While it's nice that they're willing to acknowledge manufacturing and distribution problems can result in the late arrival of products, it should be the publisher's responsibility to ensure a complete package arrives when promised and allowing themselves to push that off on to the consumer is something to be discouraged.

Sometimes you get tested by a creepy Nazi lady

Wolfenstein: The New Order is one of those games that sort of just exists. While there are neat aspects to the game -- I'm a sucker for alternate realities and mechs, to be clear -- it's hard not to be largely uninterested even with Doom beta access on the line.

Part of me is hopeful the delay to May 20, 2014 will have helped turned it around since I last demoed the game. Speaking of which, here's a cool sequence, one that MachineGames showed off to the press what feels like?? years ago. I don't recall ??it ending that way before...

Watch Jim recreate the moment

While Wolfenstein: The New Order didn't do much for me back at E3, the levels shown during MachineGames' PAX Prime 2013 build felt right. This game isn't going to revolutionize the genre, but it's got snappy gunplay and?? creepy-ass Nazis with mechs. Hopefully that will be enough to c??arry us through the entire story without losing interest.

The delay to 2014 seems to be paying off. The world needs another good Wolfenstein.

Yup, it sure is a first-person shooter alright

Bethesda is bringing back Wolfenstein, the first-person shooter that lets you kill countless Nazi bastards. The New Order takes place during the 1960s in an alternate history Earth where the Nazis have taken over th?e entire planet with their highly advance robot fighting force. It all looks hopeless, that is, until William "B.J." Blazkowicz finally awakens from his coma.

I got to see a good chunk of the game at a recent preview showing, and story wise, Wolfenstein has this very campy, almost Quentin Tarantino style goin??g for it. Gameplay wise, well, it's looking like the standard FPS experience that I'm quite frankly just getting tired of.

Wolfenstein: The New Order (PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
Developer: MachineGames
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
Release: 2013

The Wolfenstien presentation opened up very strong. B.J. is on a train heading to Berlin with a fellow resistance fighter. B.J. is off getting coffee for themselves when he encounters the main antagonist of The New Order, Frau Engel, and?? her sexual boy toy, Bubi. Frau orders you to sit down, and you don't really have much choice, as there's a guard along with a hulking big robot in the train car with you.

Frau and Bubi are speaking in German throughout this scene, and she wants to test you to make sure you are a true-bl?ooded Aryan. So she proceeds to pull out a set of pictures and ask you a series of questions, and you have to pick between two different options each time. For example, one set is of skulls and spiders, and she asks which one makes you feel the most disgusted.

All throughout this test, she makes it obvious that if you pick the wrong cards you will be shot immediately. The final pictures come, you select one, and then ... nothing. She throws the pict??ures away, laughing, saying that they really mean nothing and that if you were really not of pure Aryan blood you would have reached for your gun long before the final pictures came.

The level of tension was palpable, very reminiscent of the first 15 minutes of Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds where Christoph Waltz's character was interrogating the farmer. This scene got me really excited for what the new Wolfenstein ??was goin?g to offer, but that excitement quickly faded when the actual gameplay kicked in.

The next portion put us a third of the way into the game, as another resistance fighter is driving you to a top Nazi research facility in London, where a prototype helicopter you need to steal is located. You're drop?ped off near the front entrance of the base and watch helplessly as your friend sui?cide bombs the main entrance with his car, packed with a thousand kilos of explosives.

From here, you have to fight your way in, taking on hordes of Nazi soldiers and their big robots. BJ's health is presented in that old-school way with 100 displayed on the bottom of the screen when you're at full health and another 100 for full armor. The health n?umber dwindles as you get hit but will regenerate over time. It only regenerates so much, and you need to grab health packs to get back to 100 or above (and anything above will always dwindle down to 100 over time).

There's a wide variety of weaponry at your disposal, though most of it is the standard stuff. You know: assault rifles, shotguns, pistols, and the like. You can pretty much dual wield anything, including shotguns. There is also some advanced futuristic weaponry, such as a laser th??at can cut through objects. You'll find a far more advanced version of this laser later in the game that can actually obliterate human enemies into red mist.

Fighting humans is your standard affair, so I was pretty excited by the idea of fighting robots as well. I was hoping that the robots would make the F?PS combat feel fresh again, as killing humans over and over does wear thin. Unfortunately, the robot battles are dull. They're just big, hulking bullet sponges, and defeating them doesn't have that same satisfying feeling as taking out humans.

The level design also appears pretty linear and straightforward, with cutscenes triggered at various points. And fo?r once, I wish a first-person shooter protagonist was actually mute. BJ talks, and during gameplay at least he speaks in a very hushed, whisp??ered voice, as if he was in a public library. It made zero sense. When he's talking, he's spitting out one-liners that feel more flat than camp. There was one point where BJ exclaimed, "Fuck you, Moon," upon seeing that Nazi's had stepped foot on the Moon in the base's space exhibit. That got a chuckle out of me, more from how out of place it felt rather than it actually being funny.

At least the visuals are lovely. The game was being demoed on a PC on par with next-gen tech, and it was like pure eye candy seeing the game in motion. The awesome heavy metal soundtrack is a nice compliment to?? the experience as well.

I think what it comes down to is that I'm just finally exhausted with the first-person shooter genre in general. Perhaps I'm faulting The New Order too much, as I was hoping it'd offer something more unique over just yet another tried-and-true FPS. I'm certainly interested to play through it if the entire story presentation is as strong as the opening with Frau Eng??el was. That said, this is one experience I won't be rushing to get upon release.

Thank goodness for that

As much as I don't like assuming the worst, the continued inclusion of multiplayer components in games that truly don't need them and would be better off concentrating on single-player has given me no alternative. Which is why it's a relief to hear from GameSpot that MachineGames will not be offering multiplayer in Wolfenstein: The New Order.

I'm unsure who made the decision -- either publisher Bethesda, MachineGames, or both parties -- but job well done. Let Wolfenstein be Wolfenstein. Creative director Jens Matthies considers this project to be "an honor and a legacy," and says that "If there's a video game museum, Wolfenstein is in the first room. It's the start of the w?ave that shaped th??e world of gaming."

While The New Order may very well be another "generically dark, monochromatic, FPS, kill-the-Nazi-giant-robot game," in the words of outspoken designer Warren Spector, at least it won't have multip??layer.

No multiplayer in new Wolfenstein [GameSpot]

Epic Mickey director takes a dump on The New Order

Wolfenstein: The New Order was announced only this morning, but game creator Warren Spector has select??ed it as the ambassador of all he hates in the industry. Questi?oning the need for its existence, Spector has expressed dismay at yet another shooter.

"Did the world really need another Wolfenstein game?" he asked on Facebook. "Did we need a generically dark, monochromatic, FPS, kill-the-Nazi-giant-robot game? Uh. No. The world did not. I am so tired o?f stuff like this.

"Oh, and could we all just agree we'll never use the?? generic gravelly-whisper trailer voice guy ever again? And one more thing: Please stop using Jimi Hendrix to promote your adolescent?? male power fantasies."

Later on, in response to the heat his opinion drew, Spector revealed a little more motivation behind his at??tack on the freshly announced game, expressing disappointment that he struggles to get his own games green lit while these ones exist.

"You're welcome to write off my opinions but I have a right to express complaints about people recycling work as old as I am. I'm allowed to complain about the difficulty of? getting new stuff green lit -- new IP, new game styles and so on g?iven my perspective as someone who's constantly fighting the pressure to 'just make a shooter.'

"And given the venom aimed at Disney Epic Mickey by people with no concern for how hard the team worked I don't think I need any lectures abo?ut that," he continued. "I know how hard developers work -- better than most people -- but I wish all that effort were spent on something that pointed toward gaming's future rather than looking toward our past."

It does strike me as a little bit hypocritical that Spector bemoans criticism of Epic Mickey by people who don't know how hard it was to make ... after pouring scorn over a game of which he has zero development knowledge. He can claim authority on the level of effort expended to make Epic Mickey: The Power of Two, but is it not wholly arrogant for him to act like the effort going into The New Order means nothing,? just because it doesn't coincide with his vision for what?? a game should do?

He literally does not know what's? going on with this game. How can he then deride those for not knowing what went on with h??is?

The market is definitely saturated with a handful of ideas, and variety is sorely needed -- but singling out a new game and dumping on it after seeing nothing but a teaser trailer is a downright odious way to go about making the point. We're better served arguing for more games, not pushing to have games taken away. The answer is more new IP, not less sequels. One thing does? not have to exist at the ex??pense of another.

It?'s a shame because, on one level, I totally agree with Spector. On the other, he kind of made himself look supremely bitter in this instance, and that'll only serve to undo any merit his points may have.

Series to be "reimagined" in 2013

Bethesda Softworks has today announced the latest chapter in the Wolfenstein series, Wolfenstein: The New Order. It's sc??heduled for Q4 2013, for Xbox 360, PS3, PC, ?and next-gen consoles.

The first-person shooter is being developed as a "reimagining" of the series, and aims to offer players a "gripping and dramatic experience,"? because that's not vague!

According to the game's announcement video, The New Order has those gosh-darn Nazis up to no good yet again, this time building themselves a robot army in a bid t??o rewrite history. The video has a Sixties vibe to it, presented in the style of an old movie trailer, complete with a classic Hendrix track.

Check out the trailer below.
