If you did your daily Wordle this past Monday (June 10), you would have encountered the word manga. To me, this is a common-ish word that I ??even use when talking to my parents, but to others, this was an affront to the English language.

If you’re not deeply immersed in geek or Japanese culture, the word might not be familiar to you. It is a category of comic books used to denote that it is stylistically Japanese. While some would argue that only comics that originate from Japan qualify as manga, it has been applied to some works created ??outside the country but made in a similar style.

As writer Dan Nyugen found and compiled on Twitter, some Word??le fans were incensed by the inclusion of the word. “I never heard of this word and is not we?ll known English language, strained one user.

//twitter.com/dancow/status/1800503654761586776

New York Times Staff Editor Toni Monkovic waded into the comments to try and explain how the word ??was selec?ted, stating that “MANGA cleared all three hurdles we use to decide what goes in the bot's dictionary. He also added that “Manga has around 740 mentions in the NYT since 2000, much more than enough for the bot.  But ... It's worth noting that it has only around 75 mentions from 1976 to 2000.So, if you stopped learning words after Y2K, you might not know it.

Obviously, the slew of perturbed comments are skewed to complaints because that’s what people post o??nline. Not many are just going to comment that they thought the word was acceptable. However, the lack of knowledge about it is another reminder that I live in a different world from some people. Most bookstores I frequent now have a section specifically for mang?a, with graphic novels sometimes mixed in with them.

And yes, the manga is a Japanese loanword. Most languages have a habit of incorporating words from other languages, and English is rife with them. For example, one of Wordle’s previous puzzles was “sushi, another Japanese loanword. It’s not like they u??sed something more obscure?? like “ecchi.I shudder to think of what will happen the day that “animeshows up in the shuffle.

The New York Times has sued an offshoot of its viral web game Wordle. Again??. If I ??had to guess, the word of the day is "petty."

This time, the [insert-word-here]-le game on the legal chopping block is Worldle, a geography-themed puzzle game designed by Seattle-based developer Kory McDonald. Averaging around 100,000 players a month, Worldle presents you with the outline of a specific country or territory and challenges you to guess which one it is. It's like a highly condensed version of Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, but you aren't looking for a trench-coated spy.

Unfortunately, Worldle is now in the crosshairs of the New York Times, which purchased Wordle from its original developer, Josh Wardle, for an undisclosed seven-figure sum back in 2022. In a legal document obtained by the BBC, The New York Times argues tha?t McDonald is tryi??ng to "cause confusion" and take advantage of Wordle's "enormous goodwill".

I'll be the first to admit that Worldle shares more than a few DNA strands with Wordle, but McDonald is far from the first developer to coast off of Wordle's success. There's a Wordle clone for mathematicians, music lovers, and Pokemon fans. I'm especially fond of the last one, myself.

This isn't even the first time the New York Times has sicced the metaphorical hounds on a game inspired by Wordle. The newspaper has proven to be immensely protective of what has become one of its most marketable investments, filing DMCAs against many Wordle-inspired games. If there's an -le at the end of i??ts title, the game may as well paint a target on itself.

Fortunately for Worldle fans, McDonald told the BBC that he's not letting his game go down without a fight, telling the interviewer that "worst-case scenario, we'll change the name, but I think we'll be okay./p>

I know when that hotline bling, it can only mean a new set of challenges has unlocked

After relenting for far too many years, the biggest releases on mobile in 2022 finally convinced me to get one of those Xbox controller attachments that hold your phone. After about five minutes of using it, I tossed it in the bin. The whole set-up was just too heavy and flimsy, even if it made playing games like Diablo Immortal and Apex Legends Mobile an absolute dream. No, if I'm going to get a controller for my mobile, I'm going to need to shell out the big bucks for one of those Backbones. And considering what's on the horizon for next year, it'll ?likely be worth it.

For this year though, I was perfectly happy playing through the best mobile games of the year with touchscreen controls. Whether I was digging up treasure in Shovel Knight Dig or scoring the winning goal in Rocket League Sideswipe–a game that was technically released in late Nov??ember 2021 but wasn't actually playable until a few days later in?? December so we're counting it as eligible–touchscreen controls continue to evolve and improve with each passing year and each crop of new games.

Except for in Wordle where my fat fingers keep typing the wrong letters. Yes, we're counting Wordle for this year's GotY awards as well because while it mig??ht have started up last fall, nobody outside a small group of people was?? playing it until December.

We didn't cover as many mobile games ??on Destructoid this year as we have in the past, but that doesn't mean we weren't playing them.

Here are the nominees for Destructoid's Best Mobile Game of 2022:

Because sure, why not

Wordle has seen huge success, as it went from cute and engaging daily game to overnight craze. It's now owned by the New York Times, and the Times is partnering with Hasbro now to make a Wordle board game.

CNN reports that the New York Times and Hasbro are collaborating on Wordle: The Party Game, a board game adaptation of the online version.

In the board game version, players compete with each other to guess words the other players have scribbled. Rather than guessing the word solo against the computer, you're trying to guess the other team's chosen five-letter word. It's kind of like Mastermind or Battleship, but with words.

There are a few different game types out of the box, including a "fast mode" that involves a clock and team variations. I also dig the dry-erase boards a?nd markers, so it's easy to just re-use the same board over and over again.

Wordle: The Party Game is currently live for pre-order on Amazon, the Hasbro site, and soon on Target. The board game goes fo??r $19.99 and will ship on October 1, 2022.

Guess the secret phrase

While strange, it isn't all too surprising. Board games are increasingly popular as of late, and board game adaptations are no different. Look at how many video games have been turned into tabletop versions over the years.

With the popularity of Wordle, I imagine a Worlde board game will absolutely sell like hotcakes. And now I'm just curious if other popular online games are soon to be adapted, too. How much longer until newfound Heardle owner Spotify turns the audio game into a board game?

Genshin Impact and Wordle are leading the pack, but Zelda is still holding on

We all live in our own bubbles, and sometimes, it can be interesting to see how big they really are. Halfway through the year, Twitter has shared a list of the top ten most tweeted video gam?es of 2022 it's the usual suspects, for sure, but there is at ?least one surprise.

Poring over 1.5 billion gaming tweets (a 36 percent year-over-year increase), Twitter has confirmed that Genshin Impact and viral newcomer Wordle have locked down the #1 and #2 spots, respectively. Curiously, though, Zelda is back on the list which makes me wonder if anyone has guessed the sequel's name by now. Scream into the void!

In my world, 2022 has been a whole lotta Elden Ring, from sunrise to sunset. It seemed like folks enjoyed talking about Elden Ring almost as much as playing it, which I suppose is par for the course for FromSoftware RPGs. That said, the conversation definitely f?elt bigger more m?ainstream and has persisted long after the game's launch.

The wider Final Fantasy franchise is firing on all cylinders right now, what with Endwalker, FFXVI, Rebirth, Crisis Core, and heck, even Stranger of Paradise in the conversation; its #4 placement on the list checks out. Competitive shooters like Apex Legends and Valorant also drew out tweets, while the rest of Gaming Twitter's favorite topics Ensemble Stars!, Project Sekai, and Fate/Grand Order help put the global audience into perspective.

Wordle walked so Knotwords could run

Unless you blipped out of existence over the past few months, you know that Wordle completely took over the collective consciousness for a while. Its simplicity and addicting gameplay led to huge success from small beginnings, and it seemed like you couldn't look anywhere without seeing someone raving about the best new word puzzler. Of course, some grew weary of the game's simplistic style after a while, and other variations began to pop up there's Lewdle, a cheeky NSFW version, Sweardle, one where you get to guess your favorite swear words, and the most creative ventured away from the word game aspect altogether by using music with Heardle or geography with Globle.

After all this time, yet another variation on the word puzzle has emerged, and this is the first one we've seen since Wordle's debut that might dethrone the game that started a phenomenon. I'm talking about the Wordle creator-approved Knotwords, which is a daily word game that's basically a combination of Wordle, crossword puzzles, and position-based math logic puzzles. If that sounds kind of?? c??onfusing, let me break it down for you.

The game presents you with a series of knots, which are small, almost Tetris-like sections that fit together. Each section has a series of letters associated with it, and those letters can go in any spot in the knot. The idea is to fill out each knot wh??ile being able to read the board both up-and-down and side-to-side, meaning each row and column makes a valid English word.

Knotwords also has a hint feature, which gives the player a definition of a word that's somewhere in the puzzle with a three-minute time penalty to the in-game timer. Similar to crossword puzzles you'll find in a newspaper, the puzzles start out easy on Mondays and ramp up in difficulty until you hit the Sunday edition. Ars Technica has a great breakdown of how to solve a Knotwords puzzle if yo?u want to check it out ?in more detail.

While playing Knotwords on mobile platforms, players wi?ll have access to a new puzzle every day, as well as a "puzzlebook" that provides 30 more new puzzles for the month.

There's also the option of buying the full version of the game for $12, which gives players access to an archive of old Knotwords puzzles, including the ones from before the player's purchase of the game, as well as yet another monthly collection of puzzles. Daily "twist" puzzles are also included in the full version of the game, which switch th?ings up even more with vowel counters on each row and column a mechanic that feels vaguely like sudoku.

Unlike Wordle, you can't play Knotwords in your browser, but the full version is available for purchase on Steam.

A whole new way to play an old favorite

Ah, Scrabble. How many boards have been overturned, how many friendships and game nights have been ruined in your name? Plenty, but it's still one of the most well-loved board games of all time, with countless different editions, tournaments, and even a few game shows over the years. Turns out there's even a holiday themed around the word game, aptly named Scrabble Day, which is today, April 13. As part of the festivities, Scopely, Hasbro, and Mattel announced the newest Scrabble project a new version of the game that you can play right in your web browser, simply called Scrabble.com.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9H-koKOdCM

Scrabble.com launches with PvP (either with a friend or online) and PvE modes, as well as other features like Word Tools, which includes access to the official Scrabble Dictionary and an anagram solver (having a built-in way to cheat feels a bit weird, but hey, it's their website, they can do what they want). An official Scrabble Blog and Scrabble Forum will also be available on the website. Additional modes and features will be added in the future, such as a competitive "Tournament" mode. Scrabble.com is free-to-play in your browser, and players can keep up with the latest news on Scrabble's official social media @ScrabbleGO on most platforms, and they're even on Twitch.

With Wordle being as successful as it is, I am honestly not surprised in the slightest that Scrabble is coming for the browser game space. It was a smart move to lean into Scrabble's unique brand, though, rather than going for another Wordle copy.

While browser games used to be where a huge portion of gamers played online, most of that went away after Flash was shut down at the end of 2020. It's cool to see a resurgence of this kind of online play, especially because it makes games so much more accessible. Scrabble has had massive success as a mobile game, as after launch it became the #1 mobile word game in the world, which honestly isn'?t surprising to me at all considering how well-loved the brand is.

Here's to hoping that this new website version is a step in a similar direction, because this has the pot??ential to help usher in a whole new era of browser gaming.

It was only a matter of time

At this point, I would wager to say that Wordle's clones are just as well-known as the game itself. Just about every variation you can think of exists, from guessing swear words to songs to geography it's all there, but probably not for long. The New York Times' acquisition of Wordle rocked the internet back at the end of January, and fans of the game have been apprehensive at best since then, after bemoaning supposed changes that the New York Times made to the game that have yet to be confirmed. Either way, everyone is kind of on edge, and understandably so. We've been seeing changes slowly rolling in from the journalistic juggernaut, the most recent being that they demanded the shutdown of a popular Wordle offshoot, Wordle Archive, as reported by Ars Technica.

The website was popular among fans of the modern classic of a word game, as it archived previous days' puzzles and allowed player??s to return to them as much as they wanted. Wordle Archive had been up since the start of January, but it was officially ??taken down last week. When players logged on to play through some old puzzles, they were instead met with a message that read, "Sadly, the New York Times has requested that the Wordle Archive be taken down."

A representative fro??m the New York Times also put out a statement, as they told Ars Technica, "The usage was unauthorized, and we were in touch with them. We don't plan to comment beyond that."

As much of a bummer as this is, it's entirely within New York Times' rights to do so as the legal owners of Wordle. Copyright law can get a bit fuzzy when it comes down to copycats, but the fact that World Archive used the exact same name as the original game meant that there was no room f?or ambigui?ty.

The future of other clones, like any using the "-dle" suffix, is unclear, although part of me has to wonder if the New York Times is looking for a way to take those down, too.

A few close calls almost broke the chain

When I first heard about Wordle, the free and pure daily word-guessing game from Josh Wardle, I enjoyed it enough to w??rite an article about it on this site. But I thought that would probably be the end of it. I figured it'd come and go for a lot of us that our attention would shift to the next collective t??ime-waster as new players stepped up to see what the fuss was about. The self-sustaining cycle would continue... for a while at least.

Whil??e I'm sure that's true for p??lenty of people, I'm not one of them. I'm ~hooked~.

  • Friends, family, loved ones? Still obsessed.
  • Tweeters? Still tweeting.
  • Villains? Still trying to spoil the fun.

A month after discovering Wordle, I am still very much invested in t??his?? nifty little browser-based puzzle game. Part of that is on the aforementioned support system, whose members can't help but compare and contrast our different word-deducing habits, and part of that is on the scorecard. Every day, the stakes feel a little higher. It's like how your Report Card in elementary school felt like this mystical, earth-shatteringly serious file.

Who's going to be the last one standing in my Wordle group with a streak? Almost certainly not me. But I'm fighting for it.

I can't keep getting away with this

Wordle streak
This is what happens when intuition and ill-advised wild-card guesses collide.

I've had three truly close calls so far with last-dit?ch, e??xasperated guesses, including a recent near-botch with "KNOLL." For now, though, I'm somehow hanging in there.

Admittedly, I don't play Wordle on Hard mode the laxer default rules are fine, thanks and I also don't try and min-max it to death. Nothi?ng against the folks who have whittled down a shortl?ist of the most effective first guesses, of course. It's just not me!

In this laid-back approach, I end up guessing whatever feels right at the moment, often put myself into an avoidable jam, then struggle for an embarrassingly long time to work my way back out. It's not everyone's playstyle, but it suits me; it keeps Wordle fresh.

Where are you at? Is your streak stable, or did you miss a day? What word did you in?

If you've held off until now, or you're just hearing about it, give Wordle a try since it's good, it's free, and it's playable directly in your desktop or mobile browser without needing to download an app or create an account or even suffer? through ads. I know it's probably getting old to some, but I cherish it. And I hope to keep cherishing it all year long.

Dead app hits 200,000 downloads

Indie developer Steven Cravotta was probably left somewhat confused when his long-abandoned mobile game suddenly started rocketing up the charts. It turns out that Cravotta has also released an app known as "Wordle," which has led to confused users installing his program in droves, mistaking it for the recent viral puzzle title.

"I built an app called Wordle when I was 18 mostly for fun, to sharpen my coding skillz, and maybe make a quick buck," said Cravotta on Twitter. "It didn’t quite take off like my previous app, Grid, did. So after a few months and ~100k total downloads, I stopped updating and? promoting the a?pp."

But, in recent weeks, over 200,000 people have installed Cravotta's formative work, assuming it to be the smash hit puzzler by New York-based coder Josh Wardle. The modern Wordle does not have an app nor any monetization, and is instead played in a web browser, a fact that clearly was not realized by those players paying for and then install??ing Cravotta's program.

wordle downloads steven cravotta

"I figured ??we could turn this very strange, once in a lifetime scenario and make it something amazing!" continues Cravotta, who then reached out to Wardle to explain the confusion. The duo then decided that all of the proceeds earned by Cravotta in the confusion are to be donated to a charity of the pair's choosing. And thus, the strange windfall will be given to Boost! West Oakland an organization that offers free aft??er-school tutoring for ??children living in the West Oakland area.

In a week dominated by headlines of capitalism, here is yet another story that, in its own small way, shows the grace of good, talented people choosing to share the wealth rather than race to own it all.

Wordle, the "real" Wordle, is available to play over at the official website. There is no app.

The game that brings us together

Wordle was one of those things that kind of snuck up on me. I heard whispers of it on social media, but didn't actually give it a try until a few days after we actually covered it on the site. I love word games though, s??o once I finally decided to jump in, I wa??s hooked. It's such a fun concept to me, having the puzzle reset with everyone doing the same word.

For one thing, I know for a fact that it wouldn't be as fun for me if I had access to a ton of different levels. I've done this with plenty of other word games I love I would play through a ton of levels, and then never touch it again. Only having access to one a day makes me pace myself in a way that I really appreciate. I always appreciate a new spin on the word game genre, and Wordle manag??es to feel simple and streamlined while also providing an engaging chal??lenge.

Naturally, after the game found success, there have been a ton of copycats that have cropped up online or on the App Store. Some actually put a fun twist on the Wordle formula, like Absurdle, the version that "fights back" as you play, or Sweardle, which, you guessed it, has you guess a swear word every day instead. There are plenty of other knockoffs, though, that all go for the trappings of terrible mobile games that we're used to: putting ads everywhere, or charging you for other mechanics like lives?? or hints.

It's obviously pretty cool of the creator of Wordle to not add any cheap ploys for monetization (apparently he created it for him and his partner to play together because she loves word games, awww), and his decision to do so is one of the reasons the game has been successful. However, there's another reason why very few of the Wordle clones will survive, and?? beautifully laid out by Alex Blechman on Twitter.

//twitter.com/AlexBlec?hman/status/1481465631782457344

If you've been on Twitter at all this month, you know that Wordle has become something of a c?ultural phenomenon, not only because people enjoy playing? the game, but because they enjoy sharing how they did that day and discussing strategies. The game has simple rules, so it's easy to relay the strategies one used in surmising the answer. What really made it gain traction, though, was how easy it was to show our results using the colored square emojis.

But these are only small factors as to why the game has become the massive success that it is. I think Blechman is spot on, because it gives us all one common activity that we're engaging in together and can discuss on any given day. That immediacy really makes us feel like we??'re connected to something bigger than ourselves.

I think Wordle would have always been a hit because it's a fun, well-designed game, but the fact that it hit its stride while we're all still dealing with the pandemic isn't a coincidence. We want to connect with each other?, and having something light-hearted to talk about that we all participated in has been harder and harder to come by these days. That couldn't happen if the game was designed differently, and we weren't all playing the same puzzle day in and day out.

Logging on and solving the puzzle du jour while drinking my morning coffee has become one of my favorite parts of the day, and I think many others can say the same. In the midst of continued tragedy, if this one thing can help us all feel a little more together,?? a little more connected, a little more human, then please, by all means, keep posting those little squares on Twitter.

Good Guy Wardle

Josh Wardle, the creator of viral sensation puzzle game Wordle, has said that, despite the dinky game's overnight popularity, there are currently no plans to charge for the original game nor implement advertising into it??s interface.

Wordle, for those less inclined, is a compelling and free-to-play web game that won over an army of fans during the holiday season. The aim of the game is to guess a mystery five-letter word in six attempts or less. As the player makes their assumptions, a colored grid offers clues as to which letters are correct, incorrect, as well as offering hints on their placement. Wordle is a sort of amalgamation of classics such as Master Mind and Hangman, and wit?h each game taking just a few minutes to complete, it has found itself a regular part of many people's daily routine.

Despite its incredible popularity, however, Wardle seems set on the idea of it simply being fun and free,? rather than something tha?t he can capitalize on or exploit to advertisers, data purchasers, and subscription services.

"I am a bit suspicious of mobile apps that demand your attention and send you push notifications to get more of your attention," said Wardle in an interview with BBC Radio 4. "I like the idea of doing the opposite of that - what about a game that deliberately doesn't want much of your attention? Wordle is very simple and you can play it in three minutes, and that is all?? you get. There are also no ads and I am not doing anything with your data, and that is also quite deliberate."

"I d?on't understand why ?something can't just be fun."

It is an incredible noble stance, in an increasingly greedy and penny-pinching industry. However, I do think that creators should see some compensation for their efforts, (especially when the big boys are making out like bandits). So hopefully, Wardle will be able to receive some form of remuneration for his hard work, work that has resulted in bringing a small bit of joy to the day of thousands of people. Wardle had p??reviously stated that he still has thousands of words already locked in, so the game is set to run an??d run.

If you'd like to check it out for yourself, you can play Wordle over at the official website.

After spreading on Twitter, this browser-based game is quickly becoming a daily distraction

I have a 100 percent win rate in Wordle, a popular word-deducing game that?'s been making the rounds. Granted, I've only played it twice so far and I really took my sweet time weighi??ng possible answers before committing to any guesses but my track record is, so far at least, flawless. I'll cherish this streak, because it's sure to fizzle out soon.

The best part of Wordle is its simplicity and also its spoiler-free "Hey, try this!" factor. You don't need to download a standalone app to play it's right in your browser.

Fresh off my holiday break, I saw Destructoid's own puzzle master Darren Nakamura tweet out an odd grid of gray, yellow, and green blocks with a score and the name "Wordle" attached. I couldn't resist looking into whatever this was, and after a few timid attempts of trying to suss out the day's mystery word, I had to admit that, yep, I was invested. I imagine that's how things have snowballed for plenty of you, too. There are a lot of mildly annoying yet intriguing Wordle tweets floating around. Resistance is futile.

Why is Wordle so popular?

The game does a fine job of laying out its brainteaser setup the first time you play, so I'll keep this brief: the idea is to guess a specific word, and you've got six tries. If all of your letters are off, they'll turn gray; if t?hey're in the word but you've got their positioning wrong, they'll become yellow; if any letters are spot-on in the right box, they'll go green.

My instinct was to guess jibberish in order to brute-force a fast solution, but that doesn't fly it has to be a real word. And I feel like, so far anyway (again, I'm a newbie),?? the diff?iculty of the words has been well-balanced with the number of chances you get to crack the code. I also like the idea of always making the same first guess each day.

The fact that everyone on the internet is trying to deduce the same word adds an extra bit of excitement, whether you're competing with folks on Twitter or watching your friends or family members try to work through Wordle in the same room with a puzzled look.

As a coward, I refuse to play on Ha?rd Mode, in which "Any revealed hints must be used in subsequent guesses." After hollering at too many well-meanin?g Game Show Network contestants last week (nice white noise for the holidays), it's time to reap what I sow.

Wordle was graciously created by Josh Wardle, and it's very good.

What to do while waiting for the daily Wordle reset

If you're hooked on Wordle like the rest of us and you'd like to solve more than one puzzle a day (or if you're finding them to be too easy), then check out @chordbug's "remake," hello wordl it's also playable for free, in your brows?er. In this version, you aren't limited to just one daily puzzle (which I personally feel is exciting as is, and adds stakes), and you can also crank up the difficulty with much longer words to try and guess. More options!
