We’re still trying to get over the shock of the PS3 actually getting the game first, but it would seem that the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament III is chugging along nicely for that rumored May release date. Mark Rein recently stopped by the Epic to assure Xbox 360 owners that however painful it may be, the wait will be well worth it. He was shy on details, but pointed to Midway’s Gamers Day Event as the place where more information about the game would be revealed.

Long wait aside, the only sticking point we can think of this time is the past revelation that 360 gamers won’t be able to enjoy part of what makes the game so fulfilling in the first place: mods. Thanks to spots like , PS3 owners have been showered with maps and skins for the game since it was released last December. Epic is hoping that Xbox 360 owners will let this one slide, since the game already has more than enough fast-twitch gameplay to satisfy any cravings on its own, but how this will ultimately affect sales after it is released is yet to be determined.

Of course, nothing’s stopping Microsoft from stepping in and turning that near-impossibility (of having mods available for the system) into reality — and gaining favor with the fans. Plan on taking the plunge when it’s released, Xbox 360 owners?
