SNK has announced that the next warrior headed to their steel-clashing fighter Samurai Shodown, Basara, will be made available for the game’s roster next week, October 15 to be precise.
First appearing in 1995’s Samurai Shodown III, Basara has a particularly dark background to reflect that entry’s concerted efforts to make the series “edgier” to its predecessors. Basara was a young man living in peace with his lover Kagaribi, until the fateful day demonic swordsman and SS III boss Zankuro massacred Basara’s entire village, including his beloved. Now reborn as a semi-spiritual being, Basara seeks revenge for the deaths of his people, unaware that Kagaribin’s death was, in fact, an accident caused by his own hand.
Look, Mortal Kombat was blowing up, everyone was going grimdark.
Samurai Shodown is available now on PS4 and Xbox One. Basara is a wild, animalistic fighter, equally dangerous in close-quarters or at range, thanks to his lethal chained shuriken, which can cause untold damage by being whipped out at speed, before easily being recalled. Kagaribi’s ghost still haunts Basara, and she can even be spotted briefly in this new trailer.
