Even though the game&#8217;s release after nearly two decades was akin to a miracle, the story isn&#8217;t finished. Fans haven&#8217;t given up yet, as proven by a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Shenmue_Dojo\/status\/1798107797244027133\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Shenmue 4<\/em> ad<\/a> that decorated New York&#8217;s Times Square this week.<\/p>    <p>Die-hard fans from the site <a href=\"https:\/\/shenmuedojo.com\/letsgetshenmue4-trending-at-new-yorks-times-square\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shenmue Dojo<\/a> were behind the short ad, which appeared in Times Square on June 4. The campaign consisted of a 15-second advertisement and getting fans on board with the hashtag #letsgetshenmue4 on X. <\/p>    <figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div   id="gqq8s83tkl"    class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Broadcast live during our <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Shenmue?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Shenmue<\/a> Day stream, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LetsGetShenmue4?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#LetsGetShenmue4<\/a> hit the streets of New York with a full on 15 second advertisement on Times Square! \ud83c\udfd9\ufe0f<br><br>Shenmue fans do some insane things to try and get recognised&#8230;are you watching <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SEGA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SEGA<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SEGA_OFFICIAL?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SEGA_OFFICIAL<\/a>?\ud83d\udc40 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gzfLzQWZb9\">pic.twitter.com\/gzfLzQWZb9<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Shenmue Dojo \ud83d\udc09 (@Shenmue_Dojo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Shenmue_Dojo\/status\/1798107797244027133?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 4, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/div><\/figure>    <p>Do you think Sega noticed? This is admittedly a incredible way to flag the publisher&#8217;s attention. Getting one 15-second ad at Times Square starts as low as $40, so it&#8217;s not like they had to break the bank. Still, it&#8217;s a bold strategy; let&#8217;s see if it pays off.<\/p>    <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shenmue-fans-are-still-on-lan-di-s-trail\"><em>Shenmue <\/em>fans are still on Lan Di&#8217;s trail<\/h2>    <p>The <em>Shenmue <\/em>saga has been a fascinating one to live through and cover over the years. First released on the Dreamcast in 1999, <em>Shenmue <\/em>was developer Yu Suzuki&#8217;s magnum opus. The <em>Virtua Fighter<\/em> creator dreamed of an open-world adventure game so personal and unique that he felt it would conceptualize a new genre: FREE, or Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment. <\/p>    <p>These days, we&#8217;d likely drop <em>Shenmue <\/em>into the open-world RPG subgenre and call it a day. The game did bring about innovations, though, such as time-based story progression and NPC scheduling \u2014 the latter of which some games eventually adopted. <\/p>    <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/jbsgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/572370-Shenmue-III-launch-trailer.jpg?w=640&#038;resize=640%2C360\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-253234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jbsgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/572370-Shenmue-III-launch-trailer.jpg?w=1920 1920w, https:\/\/jbsgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/572370-Shenmue-III-launch-trailer.jpg?w=300 300w, https:\/\/jbsgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/572370-Shenmue-III-launch-trailer.jpg?w=768 768w, https:\/\/jbsgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/572370-Shenmue-III-launch-trailer.jpg?w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/jbsgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/572370-Shenmue-III-launch-trailer.jpg?w=1536 1536w, https:\/\/jbsgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/572370-Shenmue-III-launch-trailer.jpg?w=1280 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure>    <p>Unfortunately, <em>Shenmue <\/em>mostly heralded a headache for Sega. Despite the positive reception, the game was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vgchartz.com\/game\/2031\/shenmue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expensive to make and too niche<\/a> to meet sales expectations. The series lurched on with <em>Shenmue II<\/em> in 2001 (2002 on Xbox) but fell off the radar soon after. Suzuki, of course, never gave up. <em>Shenmue III<\/em> was revealed at the E3 2015 Sony Press Conference, getting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-gDHPIF3N0A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">standing ovation<\/a> and, understandably, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WY1p8ZgvqYM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some tears<\/a>. I was right there with you, Michael.<\/p>    <p>Five years later, Suzuki and <em>Shenmue <\/em>fans clearly aren&#8217;t giving up on a <em>Shenmue 4<\/em>. The third game sadly couldn&#8217;t shake the ol&#8217; <em>Shenmue <\/em>curse of being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.videogameschronicle.com\/news\/shenmue-3-performed-fine-but-isnt-a-mass-market-game-says-publisher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">too niche for strong sales<\/a>, but fan action is what got protagonist Ryo Hazuki moving further in his journey to find those damn sailors. And it probably won&#8217;t stop even with a <em>Shenmue 4<\/em>. Suzuki has said the third game <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vg247.com\/yu-suzuki-says-shenmue-3-will-get-us-40-percent-through-ryos-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">represented 40% of the story<\/a>, so there may be more campaigns ahead. Are we thinking #letsgetshenmue5 someday?  <\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is it
