{"id":630484,"date":"2024-11-01T10:19:19","date_gmt":"2024-11-01T15:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jbsgame.com\/?p=630484"},"modified":"2024-11-01T10:19:27","modified_gmt":"2024-11-01T15:19:27","slug":"you-can-no-longer-play-apex-legends-on-your-steam-deck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jbsgame.com\/you-can-no-longer-play-apex-legends-on-your-steam-deck\/","title":{"rendered":"You can no longer play Apex Legends on your Steam Deck"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Apex Legends<\/em> has always had a <a href=\"https:\/\/jbsgame.com\/apex-legends-has-banned-over-200k-accounts-since-june-in-its-anti-cheat-efforts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pretty serious problem with cheating<\/a>, to the point where an average of <a href=\"https:\/\/jbsgame.com\/an-average-of-100000-apex-legends-accounts-get-banned-every-month-for-cheating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">about 100,000 accounts are banned <em>monthly<\/em><\/a>. According to developer Respawn Entertainment, Linux specifically is a hotbed for cheating, and this includes the Steam Deck as well, which means it&#8217;s got to go.<\/p>    <p>And, indeed, the Steam Deck is <em>gone<\/em>. You can no longer play <em>Apex Legends<\/em> on your Steam Deck if that was a thing you did up until now, but the good news is that Respawn has done this for its players&#8217; own good. In a very broad, generalized sense. &#8220;In our efforts to combat cheating in Apex,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/news\/app\/1172470\/view\/4478359995220492520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">says Respawn<\/a>, &#8220;we&#8217;ve identified Linux OS as being a path for a variety of impactful exploits and cheats. It&#8217;s even made its way onto <a href=\"https:\/\/jbsgame.com\/best-free-games-on-steam-deck-right-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Destructoid&#8217;s list of top free games to play on the Deck<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamingonlinux.com\/2022\/03\/apex-legends-gets-steam-deck-verified\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">even had a &#8216;Verified&#8217; badge on its store page<\/a>.<\/p>    <p>As sad as this might be, Respawn&#8217;s reasoning is sound: &#8220;In our efforts to combat cheating in Apex, we&#8217;ve identified Linux OS as being a path for a variety of impactful exploits and cheats,&#8221; says the Steam blog post. &#8220;As a result, we&#8217;ve decided to block Linux OS access to the game. While this will impact a small number of Apex players, we believe the decision will meaningfully reduce instances of cheating in our game.&#8221;<\/p>    <p>One might read this as an admission that there are more Linux cheaters than legitimate Steam Deck players enjoying <em>Apex Legends<\/em> on the device. As per Respawn, &#8220;There is currently no reliable way for us to differentiate a legitimate Steam Deck from a malicious cheat claiming to be a Steam Deck (via Linux),&#8221; which is indeed the case.<\/p>    <p>This isn&#8217;t a temporary solution, either. &#8220;While the population of Linux users is small, their impact infected a fair amount of players\u2019 games. This ultimately brought us to our decision today,&#8221; which implies the company isn&#8217;t going to continue working to support Linux in any meaningful way.<\/p>    <p>Sadly, developers are slowly dropping support for Linux in situations where their games rely on a level and balanced playing field. A few months ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/jbsgame.com\/ea-wrc-is-unplayable-on-the-steam-deck-after-latest-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>EA WRC<\/em> announced it would no longer be playable on the Steam Deck<\/a>, either, and I&#8217;m certain more will follow suit. As good and impressive as SteamOS is, it&#8217;s clearly a pain to support for competitive titles, and so the Deck is being cut off. Oh, but hey, <a href=\"https:\/\/jbsgame.com\/gun-customizing-goblin-slaying-fps-sulfur-is-out-now-and-you-should-play-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Sulfur<\/em> is pretty darn great on the Deck<\/a>, so I recommend it.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stop playing Apex on the Deck, K,
